[ALOCHONA] Joke: Bengali guts

Please dont shoot the messenger. But I would humbly state there are many lessons to be drawn from this joke. Personally I laughed my head off because I recognized myself and a lot of people I know!

The joke goes like this:

It takes guts to be a Bengali!!

Bill Gates organized an enormous session to recruit a new Chairman for Microsoft Europe. 5000 candidates assembled in a large room. One candidate was Debdas Banerjee an Bengali guy from India.

Bill Gates thanked all the candidates for coming and asking those who do not know JAVA program to leave. 2000 people left the room. Debdas said to himself, 'I do not know JAVA but I have nothing to lose if I stay. I'll give it a try'

Bill Gates asked the candidates who never had experience of managing more than 100 people to leave. 2000 people left the room. Debdas said to himself ' I never managed anybody by myself but I have nothing to lose if I stay. What can happen to me?' So he stayed.

Then Bill Gates asked candidates who did not have management diplomas to leave. 500 people left the room. Debdas said to himself, 'I left school at 15 but what have I got to lose?' So he stayed in the room.

Lastly, Bill Gates asked the candidates who did not speak Serbo - Croat to leave. 498 people left the room.Debdas said to himself, ' I do not speak one word of Serbo - Croat but what do I have to lose?' So he stayed and found himself with one other candidate. Everyone else had gone.

Bill Gates joined them and said 'Apparently you are the only two candidates who speak Serbo - Croat, so I'd now like to hear you have a conversation together in that language.'

Calmly, Debdas turned to the other candidate and said - 'Ki cholchhe dada. Kemon achho.'(Whats up brother? How are you?) The other candidate answered - 'bhalo achhi bhai.'(I am well.)

Re: [ALOCHONA] Get rid of Pakistani Ghost!

I strongly support you. Awami League has been cryoing for Bengali nationalism, so why not changing its name with real real Bangla words. Janata Dal.

long ago. However, still there is option to take it to the court for justice
and we should get rid of this issue as soon as possible.

In this regard, the EC should consider the question of naming of the
political parties. Bangla has a rich vocabulary and a political party should
not have a problem to find a couple of suitable words for its name. I
propose to the EC to make it mandatory for a political party to have Bangla
name for registration.

The next thing is the dress code. Some political leaders use Panjabi (Hey!
Why should a Bangalee needs Panjabi to do politics?). The EC should ban
Panjabi and Peshwari coat (popularly known as Mujib coat) in Political
activities. These are 100% anti-secular, anti Bengalee nationalism
elements.

Bangalees are possibly the only nation in the world who fought for its
language for a long time. The glorious language movement that earned the
recognition of Bangla language has a very special place in the history of
Bangladesh. After more than long 50 years when the colonial rulers are gone,
I find it illogical to use Urdu word in the name of a political party in a
country where almost nobody speaks Urdu now-a-days.

I am drawing your attention to the following words:
Awami (Urdu) and League (English) of Awami League
Workers (English) and Party (English) of Workers Party
Jamaat-E-Islami (Urdu)
National (English), Awami (Urdu) and Party (English) of NAP
Forum (English) of Gonoforum, etc.

Undoubtedly assimilation of foreign words is essential to enrich a language
but the words just mentioned above have good replacement in Bangla.

Interestingly, the exact meaning of some words such as Awami is not known
many of the Bengalees. If Awami League truly believes in Bengali
nationalism, they should find a new Bangla name. It hurts me to see our
Awami league leaders use the dress of the Pakistan Muslim League very
religiously. It is shameful! We should get rid of Pakistani ghost in every
possible way.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Prothom -alo Cartoon and few words

I am glad that you had the opportunity to study Rushdie and Taslima's work. I must say that I still don't agree with you on the merit of their writing. The Satanic Verses is a book that analyzes two characters - the good and the "alleged" evil - switches their motivations, personalities, and morals in two life-altering incidents. It's a psychologist's dream come true, if you will. I reserve my comments about Taslima, although I think her writing has matured over the years. Then again, what do I know? I am just a reader, and definitely not in a position to say that her writing does not qualify to be even considered a literature.

Faith, albeit all it's glory and mysticism, is not a flimsy thing, Sir, that some words or images printed on a piece of paper would suddenly shake my relationship to god. Nor should "sentiment" be so fragile that people would threaten to kill someone if he/she chooses to express an opinion. When our faith and sentiment are dictated by radical mullahs, and we act like a herd of sheep, I for one choose not to blame anyone else for causing agony to my spiritual life.

need any convincing from me.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Get rid of Pakistani Ghost!

Bangla has thousands of Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, English and Urdu words, which has made this a rich language.

Evolving over the past centuries, we have not only learnt to accept our own names but that of the names of roads, places, political parties and others as they are today. Political parties represent the heart throb of the masses so does their names.

Changing the names of political parties to Bangla (for that matter to English or Arabic) is not only counter productive but will play in to the hands of those who want to delay the implementation of democracy in Bangladesh on the basis of petty issues.

[ALOCHONA] Awami League: 11 charge sheeted in murder case

Dear Alochoks

I wonder if there will be any protests from Awami League that their party could never have supporters who were murderers?

How they love to condemn Mujibs’s murderers – yet how they turn a blind eye to murderers and bandits in their own party!

And still they lecture us about how they are the guardians of every flower in Bangladesh! Hypocrites!

Eleven Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and activists have been chargesheeted in BNP leader Habibullah murder case.

Twenty-eight others, most of them Awami League leaders and activists, have been dropped from the charge sheet, according to the investigation officer (IO) of the case.

Advocate Md. Habibullah, vice-president of district BNP and secretary of Brahmanbaria Bar Association, was killed on October 27 last year in a bomb attack on a procession brought out in the town welcoming BNP chairperson and the then prime minister Khaleda zia's address to nation.

The 11 chargesheeted accused are Hasan Sarwar, vice-president of Brahmanbaria Chhatra League and VP of Brahmanbaria Government College Students Union; its general secretary Iqbal Hossain; Suman Mia, joint secretary of Juba League; and Chatra League leaders Md. Jakir Hossain, Mamun Mia, Salim Mia, Babul Mia, Muzammel Haque, Zumman Mia and Kanan.

Those dropped from the charge sheet include AL chief and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's private secretary Obaidul Muktadir alias Rabiul, Brahmanbaria district AL vice-president Helal Uddin, organizing secretary Mahbubul Bari Montu, youth affair secretary Sheikh Md. Anar and former Chhatra League secretary Jahirul Islam Jahir. The IO, CID Sub-inspector Amulla Bhushan Bhumik said their names were dropped from the charge sheet as their involvement was not found in the bomb attack.

On October 28, Habibullah's brother Md. Amanullah filed a case accusing 38 people.

After ten months' investigation, the IO submitted the charge sheet to a court here on Thursday.

[ALOCHONA] BNP: 8 Ministers Quizzed on Khaleda Corruption

Dear Alochoks

It’s great to see the Caretaker Government, via the Anti Corruption Committee, in dynamic action against the governments of Khaleda and Hasina, in spite of recent difficulties.

May the truth be told and may criminals be treated as criminals.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will question eight former ministers, including M Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Matiur Rahman Nizami tomorrow in connection with a graft case filed against detained former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

A Dhaka court yesterday sent six people arrested on Saturday in connection with the case filed on September 2 to jail after two of them gave judicial statements.

"The cabinet ministers of the government purchase committee will be questioned and they have been summoned to appear before the commission on September 25 as the case is sensitive and holds public importance," said ACC Secretary Mukhles Ur Rahman.

The cabinet purchase committee had approved the awarding of the container handling work at Dhaka Inland Container Depot (ICD) and Chittagong Port ICD yard to Global Agro Trade (Pvt) Co Ltd (GATCO) despite its alleged lack in experience and skills, sources said.

The former ministers are finance minister Saifur Rahman, LGRD minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, industries minister Matiur Rahman Nizami, agriculture minister MK Anwar, health minister Khandaker Musharraf, information minister M Shamsul Islam, commerce minister Amir Khasru Chowdhury and state minister for energy minister AKM Musharraf Hossain.

The ACC has already taken permission from the court to question two detained former ministers--Khandaker Musharraf and AKM Musharraf Hossain--in jail.

On Wednesday it issued letters to the ministers asking them to appear before the commission.

ACC Deputy Director Golam Shahriar Chowdhury filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against Khaleda, her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko and 11 others.

The other accused in the case are former chairmen of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Commodore (retd) Zulfiqur Ali and AMM Shahadat Hossain, former CPA director (transport) AM Sanwar Hossain, former chief finance and accounts officer Ahmed Abul Qashem, former director Luthful Kabir, former shipping minister and BNP leader Col (retd) Akbar Hossain's son Ismail Hossain Simon, GATCO directors Syed Galib Ahmed, Syed Tanveer Ahmed and AKM Musa Kajol and Akbar's wife Jahanara Ansar and one Ehsan Yusuf.

The ACC brought that case under the Emergency Power Rules on September 17 and arrested six of the accused on September 22. They are Shahadat Hossain, Luthful Kabir, Sanwar Hossain, Ahmed Abul Qashem, Galib Ahmed and Tanveer Ahmed.

In the case statement, it was alleged that the former PM and her son violated conditions by influencing the tender process and that the CPA officials helped GATCO win the tender although a three-member evaluation committee of the port had declared GATCO unfit for the work.

The complaint added that the government purchase committee at a meeting also found GATCO lacking experience and the proposal was not processed following due rules. The meeting unanimously rejected the proposal and recommended re-tendering the work.

The case statement said soon after the documents of the tender reached the Prime Minister's Office, Khaleda took initiatives to give GATCO the job, misusing her position and without taking into account the objections of the evaluation and purchase committees.

The complaint added that Koko influenced his mother after Simon agreed to pay him money for getting the work.

The committee later approved the proposal.

The arrested were produced before the Senior Sessions Judge's Court yesterday afternoon with the petition for sending them to jail.

The arrested GATCO directors gave judicial statements before Magistrate Abdullahel Baki. Details of the statement could not be known immediately, but a source in the court said the statements make clear the involvement of Koko and Simon in the dealings.

Following defence lawyers' appeal the court ordered providing medical facilities to the accused in jail and giving them facilities in accordance with jail code.
