[ALOCHONA] Cyclone Sidr: 60% Of Crops destroyed In Affected areas

Courtesy New Age 17/11/07

Sidr, one of the strongest cyclones that have devastated Bangladesh, has partially or totally damaged standing crops on around five lakh hectares of land in the south and south-western districts, causing a loss of around six lakh tonnes of food-crops, particularly the aman paddy, according to the primary assessment of the agriculture ministry.
Sixty per cent of the crops ravaged by Sidr have been completely destroyed, said observers.
The total production of aman is likely to be decreased by 16 lakh tonnes as the recent flood caused a loss of 10 lakh tonnes of food-grains this year. The government had set an optimistic target of 1,30,00,000 tonnes of aman this year.
The field-level agriculture officers have been asked to submit, within 10 days, detailed reports on damage to the crops in the areas that are under their jurisdiction.
The directives were issued after an emergency meeting on Saturday which discussed the primary assessments of crop damage with the agriculture adviser, CS Karim, in the chair.
Agriculture secretary Abdul Aziz, senior officials of the agriculture ministry, the present and three former directors-general of the Department of Agricultural Extension, among others, attended the meeting to discuss the loss of crops and also work out a post-cyclone rehabilitation plan.
‘It will take time for the authorities concerned to assess the total crop damage in terms of money. We are planning to boost boro production to compensate for the loss caused by the cyclone,’ agriculture adviser CS Karim told reporters after the meeting.
He assured the farmers that there would be no shortage of fertilisers, seeds and no irrigation crisis in the boro season. ‘We will take all measures possible to compensate for the loss in aman production.’
Cyclone Sidr on Thursday night levelled thousands of thatched and tin houses, trees and other structures in around 23 districts, caused colossal damage to standing crops there and left a trail of devastation in Barguna, Jhahalakathi, Pirojpur and Patuakhali.
The cyclone damaged standing crops of winter vegetables, oil seeds, pulses, transplanted aman paddy of local and high yielding varieties and seedbeds of boro rice on vast tracts of land. Among the damaged vegetable crops are cauliflower, radish, cabbage, lal shak, mustard seed and various varieties of pulses. Many fruit trees, mostly papaya and banana, have been flattened by the cyclonic winds that raged through the region at speeds of up to 220 km and the tidal surges that were as much a 20 feet high in some places.
It will be difficult for the ill-starred farmers, who have already been hit hard by two prolonged floods in the July-September period, to make up for the losses, according to agriculturalists.

[ALOCHONA] Cyclone Sidr: Power Supply Partially Restored

Power supply system partially restored
Courtesy New Age 17/11/07

The power authorities partially brought the electricity supply system back into operation on Saturday, restoring most of the national grid and fixing some of the power plants that tripped on Friday after the onslaught of Sidr, the latest cyclone to hit Bangladesh.
The worst cyclone-hit southern districts like Barguna, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Barisal and Khulna, however, remained shrouded by darkness in the night as authorities could not repair damaged transmission and distribution systems.
There was prolonged load-shedding in the more fortunate areas, including the capital, even though the national grid was restored because of the large gap between demand and supply.
‘We have restored 98 cent of the generation system and 90 per cent of the transmission and distribution system, except in the most stricken southern districts,’ said acting chairman of the Power Development Board, Shawkat Ali, at a press briefing on Saturday evening.
Apart from the six to seven southern districts and Dhanmondi in the city, the power supply situation will be like pre-cyclone days by Sunday, and in the other parts of the country it will be restored fully in four days, he said.
Power generation crept to 1,900 MW by 4:00pm on Saturday from around 600 MW on Friday night after the national grid was restored partially and five power units were brought into operation after they tripped.
Because of the damage sustained by the transmission and distribution lines during the cyclone on Thursday night, the national grid first tripped on Friday morning, shutting down all 26 power plants. The entire country went without electricity for nearly 24 hours.
The national grid, after it was partially restored and five power units were brought back into operation, again became inoperative on Friday evening because of the high demand for electricity.
Shawkat told reporters that generation would be increased to 2,700 MW in the evening peak hours after the full restoration of the 210 MW Ghorashal-4, 450 MW Meghnaghat and 360 MW Haripur independent power plants.
Electricity generation, however, increased to 2,300 MW at 8:00pm, but there was little chance that it might rise to 2,500 MW in rest of the night, officials of PDB told New Age at around 8:10pm.
Power outages were frequent and prolonged in the peak hours. The ‘official’ demand for power was around 2,900 MW, but many power officials believe that the demand was over 3,500 MW as it is usually around 5,000 MW in the evening peak hours on a normal day.
The PDB usually generated around 3,600 MW of power in the evening peak hours before the cyclone.
Many parts of the city and other areas also suffered from frequent load-shedding throughout the day as the demand for power was much higher than the supply of around 1,700-1,900 MW.
DESA got 560 MW of electricity against the demand for 900 MW during the day, while DESCO got 245 MW against the demand for 265 MW and REB got 750 MW against the demand for 1,200 MW, and the PDB and West Zone Power Distribution Company got the rest of the electricity.
The Rural Electrification Board’s chairman, Habib Ullah Majumdar, told reporters that they were yet to restore any sort of electricity supply to worse-hit seven Palli Bidyut Samities in Barguna, Barisal, Pirjopur, Patuakhali and Bagerhat.
‘We have mobilised additional manpower for these samities from northern districts. We hope to restore the power supply in these areas in three to four days,’ he said.
Majumdar said that power supply was restored partially in 22 samities.
He said that 1,722 poles have been broken, 7,679 poles tilted, 7,000 kilometres of wire snapped and 25 towers, 6,217 meters and 56 sub-stations damaged by the cyclone.
The Dhaka Electric Supply Authority’s chairman, Nazrul Hasan, said that apart from Dhanmondi sub-station, where two transformers were damaged, electricity supply network of other DESA areas were restored; and the Dhaka Electric Supply Company’s managing director, Saleh Ahmed, said that they had restored all the supply network by Saturday evening.
‘It will take around three to four days to repair the transformers in Dhanmondi, and in the meantime we will supply electricity to the area through alternative arrangements. The area will undergo load-shedding in the meantime,’ said Nazrul.

[ALOCHONA] Cyclone Sidr: Death toll crosses 2,000

Sidr death toll crosses 2,000
Rescuers struggle to reach remote areas

Courtesy New Age 17/11/07

The death toll from Thursday’s cyclone Sidr rose to more than 2000 with reports of destruction pouring in as rescuers struggled to reach remote watery edges of the coastal districts.
Hundreds of survivors were yet to be evacuated to shelters and injured remained unattended in the worst hit Barguna and Pirojpur disricts as a number of the deltaic islands remained inundated following the tidal surge triggered by the cyclone.
The Armed Forces Division, leading the relief and rescue operations, put the death figures at 1,723 till 7pm Saturday.
Food and disaster management secretary Mohammad Ayub Mia on Friday said that 15 lakh people had been evacuated to 2,168 cyclone centres before the cyclone started pounding the coastal areas Thursday night. Some 42,000 volunteers were deployed for evacuation.
Tidal surge rising up to 6 feet crashed into low-lying offshore islands causing deaths and destruction of crops, the secretary mentioned.
Hundreds of bodies were still floating in the rivers surrounding Dublar Char in the Sundarban, said people returning from inside the mangrove forest on Saturday.
They said there were about seven hundred makeshift shelters for nearly 7,000 fishermen on Dublar Char and its surrounding areas. Many of the fishermen, who took shelter in their boats on different canals and creeks during the cyclone, are feared to have been washed away by the giant waves.
Fisherman Milon (30) of Patharghata upazila in Barguna remained floating for about 30 hours in the Bay before he was rescued by a trawler Saturday morning and taken to Bagerhat in the afternoon.
‘My boat sank when I was trying to take shelter on the river inside the Sundarban. On my way back after being rescued, I saw hundreds of bodies floating in the Bay and the rivers near Dublar Char,’ Milon said.
Shah Alam Masud (36), a resident of Kakchira Bazar, said all the roads in the river port area had been damaged.
‘Ninety per cent of the dwellings in the area have been blown away or razed to the ground by the storm,’ he said.
Captain Abidur Rahman, commander of the Coast Guards’ west zone, told New Age that they had rescued 180 people from the sea and rivers around Dublar Char and recovered three bodies from there. ‘Reports that hundreds of bodies are floating are baseless,’ he said.
Lieutenant Commander Manwar, conducting rescue operation, upon his return to Barisal from Barguna Saturday afternoon, said communication could not be established with some remote coastal areas.
A team of Bangladesh Navy will join the relief and rescue operations today to conduct search for survivors in the coastal unions in Patharghata, the officer said.
Our Barisal correspondent reported that the death toll from the cyclone Sidr rose to 790 in the division including 85 in Barisal, 280 in Patuakhali, 34 in Jhalakati, 236 in Barguna, 21 in Bhola and 134 in Pirojpur districts.
According to primary estimates, some 2,500 educational institutions, 30,700 thatch houses and shanties have been damaged or completely destroyed rendering about three lakh people homeless in Barisal division.
Power supply resumed in Barisal city on Saturday but Barguna still remained in dark. Power supply to most of the rural areas remained disrupted till this report was filed Saturday evening.
Educational institutions resumed classes in the city and some institutions revised annual examination schedules.
Prices of essential items, including rice, pulses, eggs, candles, and fuels have increased in local markets following the cyclone.
Road communications with the district headquarters, excepting Barguna, were partly restored on Saturday. Large trees downed by the cyclone were still lying on roads blocking traffic. Ferries in Barguna and Patuakhali were operating.
Most of the areas in the southern districts still remained without power causing immense sufferings to the people.
A fisherman of Bagerhat, Abdul Gafur (50) upon return from the sea said four of his fellow fishermen had gone missing during the storm. Three others survived by climbing up a tree and tying themselves up with a strong branch where they had spent the night before being rescued by volunteers.
The death count would increase as the division was continually updating the latest figures based on reports from various sources including the ministry of food and disaster management, said the Armed Forces Division at a press briefing at Dhaka cantonment.
Brigadier general Kazi Abidus Samad, director operations and plans of the division, and Lt Col Mainullah Chowdhury spoke at the briefing.
The district-wise death tolls stand at: 474 in Barguna, 460 in Bagerhat, 385 in Patuakhali, 134 in Pirojpur, 78 in Barisal, 46 in Madaripur, 29 in Bhola, 28 in Jhalakati, 27 in Gopalganj, 20 in Shariatpur and 12 in Khulna.
The armed forces were helping the civil administrations across the coastal areas in their efforts to restore road and telecommunications, providing treatment to the injured, trying to restore power supply and providing relief supplies to the cyclone-hit people, he said.

Please Give a Hand to the Cyclone Victims in Bangladesh!

Dear Friends & Well-wishers,

Most of you probably are already aware of the massive havoc and devastation that has been caused by the ferocious cyclone Sidr, "the most destructive storm to hit the country in more than a decade" in Bangladesh. As of today, the death toll has already risen to 2000+. The death toll is expected to follow thousands more. According to the BBC report, the "Cyclone Sidr destroyed or damaged tens of thousands of homes, brought down power lines and wiped out vital crops." Available relief operation in the affected area is barely sufficient because of the intensity and immensity of the damage. For these practical reasons, government also cannot be expected to carry out the huge relief operation and rehabilitation work all alone.
That said, we would like to request our beloved members to come forward and give a hand to the millions of poor victims. There are several government and NGOs available, where you may wish to donate. In order to be a part of this humanitarian mission, Mukto-Mona has allotted US $ 500.00 from its modest fund which we hope to hand over soon to the Bangladesh Government's Relief Fund through our Dhaka Representative Prof. Ajoy Roy. Willing M-M members living in the USA/Canada may join our effort by sending monetary contribution through personal checks. Please feel free to come forward & help the victims, however, small your contribution is. At this moment, we are not accepting donations from M-M members outside the USA. If we do, you would be notified soon. You may contact us through following e-mail IDs:

Re: [ALOCHONA] Jamaate Islami has more corrupt people than any other party!!!

Mr. Ramjan:

A pseudo-political party that is founded upon morally corrupt, intellectually vacuum, and inhumane principles of the Wahabis under the disguise of Islam, a group of people that has such a notorious history of ruthlessness, little or no regard for human life, and that banks on the ideologically fragile and spiritually lost - calling such a platform of hatred, bigotry, ignorance, and repression "Clean" is, in my opinion, equally morally and intellectually vacuous.

If ever, the saddest day befalls upon our country when the ideology of Jamaat and its group of goons become the governing principles of Bangladesh, I assure you, that will be the day when Islam will fail to represent the message of peace. And when that day arrives, if ever, just like our ancestors who fought so bravely against ideological, social, and political tyranny, many of us would fight until the last goon of Jamaat is sent back to its ideological Mecca, to their racist, sexist, tyrant, slave-owning masters in the Middle-East.

MP shajahan Chowdhury is arrested by media propagation. 1. C.I. sheet was granted by Thana Nirbahi Officer and was kept with other construction materials in his store but that was not for his personal use.

Is there any political party who can stand in front of Jamaat morally? I don't see any.

The following is from Janakantha's editorial:

So based on above analysis, we can say Jamaatis are both war criminals and corrupt politicians. They are the real enemies of the country and we need to bring them to justice for their unconscionable lifestyle (deceiving people with beard and outward sunnah appearance), corruption, abuse of power, hypocrisy and moral political bankruptcies, right?

I only thank to Allah for the fact that only 17 MPs were elected from this pseudo-Islamic and pseudo-religious party.

[vinnomot] With a grain of piquant salt: To keep on doing the same thing while expecting different results is the definition of insanity!

USA’s counter terrorism effort in the Global War against Terror is frankly creating more terrorists than it is stopping. If the objective was to reduce the number of terrorists, then it has failed, because the number of terrorists and terrorist incidents is indeed increasing. If the objective was to reduce the territory they cover, then that too has not happened. If the objective was to reduce the terrorists’ influence, then the influence has grown. If the idea was to reduce Islamist religiosity, then that too it has increased. Keeping things static is no fun gun. One has to aim at removing, reducing and eradicating these totally. The main reason behind this is that USA sees this problem in purely military terms. That is why it keeps on using military means primarily and then gets surprised at the results that terrorism is not reducing.
