Dear Mr. Hannan,
Hate crimes (also known as bias motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership in a certain social group, usually defined by race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation. Hate crimes differ from conventional crime because they are not directed simply at an individual, but are meant to cause fear and intimidation in an entire group or class of people.
Mr. your comments are well recorded by the TV channel and you can prove yourself that you didn't utter what you have claimed in your mail. Usually, politicians speak whatever they fit for poly tricks not for politics. But you have served under the Government of Bangladesh as a Secretary and later the Chairperson for an Islamic Bank. Your comments are not to directed simply at an individual but those comments were meant to cause fear and intimidation to the whole nation as well as the rest of the world. How come you have become a boot licker of anti liberation forces? If those evils provided you a unique opportunity to serve as the Chairperson of an Islamic Bank and you are a great beneficiary of that offer after your retirement from govt. job, Seeing no pros and cons, I must say, "You are biased to anti liberation forces and your strong affiliation to those evil forces encouraged you to do such heinous comments and you failed to take the shelter of the Press Council as well as other legal institutions against that English Daily."

Dear members and well-wishers,
Assalamu Alaikum. As I am receiving lot of calls from worried friends and well-wishers about the case filed against me along with others, I can only say about myself that every single statement made by the complainant against me is false and without any basis.I have left everything to Allah .My lawyers are taking normal steps in my matter,
Please see the news item below and see the role of Daily Star. This is the paper which made a big news of the talk show of a channel and made a provocative headline. They also published two articles against me by Syed Muhammad Ibrahim and Syed Badrul Ahsan. My polite rejinders have not been published though I reminded the editor by drawing his attention by name.I give below my rejoinder of the article of Mr.Ibrahim.What kind of fairness is this?
The un-proved (in any court of law )insinuations made in the news item of the daily of its own volition shows the daily's bias.

Subject: On the article of Syed Muhammad Ibrahim
To the Editor, The Daily Star, Dhaka. Dear Mr Editor, Assalamu Alaikum. I have been dismayed by the article of Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, "Well Said Your Honour " published in your esteemed daily on 29.10.07. There is no truth in his statement quote At about 9.30 p.m. on Friday, October 26, in a television talk show on Ekushey TV titled Ekushey Shomoy, Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan a former secretary to the government of Bangladesh said that there was no Liberation War of Bangladesh, instead what happened in 1971 was civil war in Pakistan unquote I have never said that 1971 was not Mukti Juddho ( war of liberation) instead it was a civil war. This is a serious manipulqation of my statement in the talk show where I did not go on my own liking. I was invited there.I was supposed to join in a discussion on current affairs.Insted I was asked questions about mostly on 1971 events. In a live talk show I had no option except answering questions asked from me from the anchor person, Mr Shariar Kabir and three journalists.I clearly said that in 1971 there was a civil war and and a MuktiJuddho ( please refer your own report on the first page on 28.10.07).In view of that the aricle of Syed Muhammad Ibrahim stands on false leg and I need not discuss other issues. However i am replying to his direct question he posed to me . quote May I ask a question to xxxxxx and Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan: "Pakistan government in 1971 used to say that the situation in East Pakistan in 1971 was an internal law and order problem. In 2007 Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan says it was a civil war. Question: Was Bangladesh born because of political struggle alone or because of the recommendations of politicians only?"Unquote Any body may see my stance from the website of Ekushey television or report of the daily star or from a c.d. obtained from the Ekushe.I must however add as a student of political science that even though 26 th March was the date of declaration of independence of Bangladesh, the political sovereignty of Bangladesh over the territory was established on 16th December, 1971with all its legal consequences in domestic and international law.. Respected editor, please publish it without delay. Shah Abdul Hannan | | |

Sent EC stinker, Modi blames Sonia and remembers the
Constitution
Express news service

NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 6
The Election Commission today issued notice to Gujarat
Chief Minister Narendra Modi over his campaign speech
in which he justified the killing of Sohrabuddin
Sheikh in a fake encounter, a case which is being
heard by the Supreme Court.
Asking him to respond to the notice by Saturday, the
Election Commission, after going through a video
recording of his speech, media reports and complaints,
said it is "prima facie convinced that references to
Sohrabuddin and linking his name to terrorism, in the
speech, amounts to indulging in activity which may
aggravate existing differences, creating mutual hatred
and causing tension between different communities in
violation of the Model Code."
"There shall be no appeal to caste or communal
feelings for securing votes," the EC said quoting the
Model Code of Conduct.
At an election rally in south Gujarat, Modi had said:
"I am thumping my chest and declaring that
Sohrabuddin's encounter took place on the dharti of
Gujarat. If I have done something wrong, hang me. But
these people, next they will offer a chadar at
Sohrabuddin's grave."
Under fire for his remarks with opponents demanding
his disqualification from the polls, Modi, in an
apparent attempt to defuse the controversy, today told
Times Now TV that "fake encounters are not
acceptable".
"I request the Supreme Court and all Constitutional
authorities not to go by perceptions but to go by
facts. I am a law-abiding citizen and I will ensure
that India's Constitution remains the supreme
authority," he said.
He said it was Congress president Sonia Gandhi who
provoked him into making the remarks on Sohrabuddin's
killing. "I began talking about development, about
agriculture and primary education. But when Sonia
Gandhi, in her first rally in Gujarat, called me a
merchant of death, I had to react because in a
democracy it is my duty to take the truth to the
people of the country," he said.
"I have never justified fake encounters... I have
faced a lot of allegations on the Sohrabuddin issue in
the past six months. So far, I was quiet. But I have
to give an explanation if Soniabehn calls me the
merchant of death. There is no controversy over police
encounters. The controversy is over fake encounters. I
have always opposed and will continue to oppose fake
encounters," he said.

Two days later, Modi says he never supported encounter
7 Dec, 2007, 0039 hrs IST, TNN
NEW DELHI: Under attack over his alleged remark
justifying the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Gujarat
chief minister Narendra Modi asserted that he had
never justified fake police encounters. At a rally in
Kapalvad, Mr Modi said fake police encounters "cannot
be accepted". The chief minister blamed Congress
president Sonia Gandhi for forcing him to retort.
Mr Modi has been accused of justifying the killing of
Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter at a rally on
Tuesday. Now nearly 48 hours later, Mr Modi asserted,
"I do not justify fake police encounters."
The Gujarat chief minister said he and his government
are against fake encounters and have taken a stand
against it in the Supreme Court. "Fake encounters
cannot be accepted. I have never justified it and I
have always condemned it," he said. He said the
Supreme Court should look into the realities of
Sohrabuddin case guided by facts.
Mr Modi's alleged justification had been strongly
condemned by the Congress and the Left parties and
social activists, and there were demands that he be
booked under a criminal case.
The Gujarat chief minister has accused Ms Gandhi of
"provoking" him by calling him the "merchant of
death". He said though his poll agenda was only to
raise developmental issues, he had been compelled to
react. "I had kept quiet, but Sonia provoked me. I
felt the need to tell Sonia the truth... I will reply
to whatever issues the Congress raises and will speak
in the same language they use and I have a right to
defend himself," Mr Modi said.
The Gujarat government's special counsel in Supreme
Court K T S Tulsi had threatened to resign if the
chief minister did not apologise for his remarks on
Sohrabuddin Sheikh. Asserting that "he was and will be
a law-abiding citizen," Mr Modi said it is his
democratic duty to tell the truth to people and
asserted that hostile reactions to him reeked of
"pseudo secularism".
Mr Modi said he had not said anything harsh about Ms
Gandhi during his campaign and a reference was made to
her when he had to respond to her accusations. "If it
is a crime to use Sonia's name then I will stop taking
her name," he said.
He regretted that "hundreds of accusations" were being
levelled against him. Mr Modi said he is surprised why
terrorism is always linked to minorities. "If I talk
of terrorism it does not mean it is linked to
terrorists," he added.

EC notice to Modi over hate speech
7 Dec 2007, 0228 hrs IST , TNN
NEW DELHI: Taking note of reports that he had made a
"communal" appeal at an election rally on Tuesday, the
Election Commission on Thursday sent a notice to
Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, asking him to reply by 11am
on Saturday.
A complaint against Modi was filed by social activist
Teesta Setalvad, who alleged that the speech at
Mangrol in south Gujarat amounted to an open
exhortation to violence and misuse of religion for
political ends. Hence, it was violative of the model
code of conduct, apart from being in breach of the
rule of law.
Taking into account various inputs, including video
footage of the speech, the commission on Thursday said
that prima facie it was of the view that references to
Sohrabuddin Sheikh, apparently killed in a fake
encounter, and linking him to terrorism amounted to
indulging in activity which might aggravate existing
differences, create mutual hatred and cause tension
between different communities.
The EC notice said that it would involve violation of
the provision of Clauses 1 and 3 of Item I of the
Model Code of Conduct.
Earlier in the day, BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha, V
K Malhotra, repeated his previous day's statement that
Modi had been quoted out of context. On Gujarat
government counsel K T S Tulsi threatening to return
the brief, he said "there could be other counsel" but
then added that efforts would be made to explain
matters to him (Tulsi).
Speaking in Himachal Pradesh, BJP vice-president
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Modi had spoken about
Sohrabuddin to condemn terrorism and not a particular
community.
"If you criticize Osama bin Laden, do you criticize a
community?" an agency report quoted him as saying.

No need for Modi to be sorry: BJP
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Nothing that Gujarat Chief Minister
Narendra Modi spoke warranted an apology, the
Bharatiya Janata Party said here on Thursday even as
the Communist Party of India sought his
"disqualification" from contesting elections and
filing of a criminal case against him.
There was absolutely no reason for him to be sorry
about the reference to Sohrabuddin Sheikh in his
election speech at Mangrol in south Gujarat on
Tuesday; Mr. Modi suggested that "he got what he
deserved," which was death at the hands of policemen
staging an encounter, party spokesperson V.K. Malhotra
said.
He was responding to questions related to Mr. Modi's
comments referring to Sohrabuddin who, according to
the Gujarat government's submission in the Supreme
Court, was done to death in a planned manner by some
rogue police officers.
CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said his party's
delegation would meet the Election Commission on
Friday to place its demand of disqualification before
it. "The EC should take suo motu notice of his
unpardonable remarks defending murder as well as his
role in engineering riots to win elections and bar him
from contesting," Mr. Dasgupta said.
As against the CPI's view, Mr. Malhotra went on the
offensive, saying Congress president Sonia Gandhi had
adopted an "anti-Hindu" and "hatred of Hindus"
attitude. "What about the Congress record during the
1984 anti-Sikh riots?" Mr. Malhotra countered. He
added that reporters should look at the "whole story."
After all, some Congressmen campaigning in Gujarat,
which was bound for polls, had described Hindus who
participated in the 2002 carnage in Gujarat as
"terrorists."
"Can Hindus be described as terrorists," the BJP
asked.
On the EC's decision to serve notice on the party in
connection with Mr. Modi's comments, the BJP's stand
was that it would study the notice and give an
appropriate response. When queried over comments by
Gujarat government counsel K.T.S. Tulsi that in view
of Mr. Modi's remarks he would be "returning the
brief" in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, Mr.
Malhotra suggested that efforts were on to "persuade"
him not to withdraw from the case.

BBC: Iranian hanged after verdict stay |
Amnesty says five minors have been executed in Iran in 2007 | An Iranian man has been hanged for rape despite his alleged victims withdrawing their accusations and a judicial review being ordered into the sentence. Makwan Mouloudzadeh, 20, had been found guilty of raping three teenage boys when he was 13 years old. The hanging took place on Wednesday morning at a prison in Kermanshah province in western Iran. Human rights groups say international law strictly forbids execution of child offenders, even after they become 18. "On 11 November the head of the justice administration of Kermanshah received an order from the judiciary head, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, to stop the verdict being carried out," the lawyer, Saeed Eqbali, was quoted as saying. "But the case, which was supposed to be reviewed in Tehran, was sent back from there to Kermanshah, and the execution was carried out quickly," the lawyer said. Public execution Clarisa Bencomo of the Human Rights Watch (HRW) group told Reuters news agency she had received information that Mr Mouloudzadeh's family had been told to come and pick up his body. Her organisation had spoken to people who had seen the body, she said. HRW says Mr Mouloudzadeh was arrested in September 2006 after three men complained to police he had raped them seven years earlier. During court proceedings, Mr Mouloudzadeh withdrew a confession he had made earlier, saying it had been the result of coercion by the police, the US-based group says. As a state that is party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Iran has undertaken not to execute child offenders. But Amnesty International says Iran has executed five minors so far in 2007 and 27 minors since 1990. The latest execution brings to at least 280 the number of people hanged in Iran this year, according to the AFP news agency. Many are public hangings. Capital offences in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, serious drug trafficking, apostasy, adultery and homosexual acts between men. __._,_.___

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/45330 Dear All: Although I mostly disagreed with whatever Mr Shah Abdul Hannan had written in the recent past on islam, shariah etc. But honesty and fairness demand that this time I support Mr Hannan. Had I not seen the video-clips of Ekushey TV, I would have possibly given the benefit of doubt to General Ibrahim and others who claim that Mr Hannan denied that there was ever a freedom struggle in 1971 in Bangladesh. He simply stated that it was both a civil war and a liberation struggle. And I don't see any problem with such an assertion. What began as a movement for autonomy for East pakistan turned into a rebellion against Pakistani government and a civil war against actual and presumed enemies of Bangladesh. The rebellion soon turned into a revolutionary freedom struggle. If one looks at the Pakistan movement, from day one it was not a movement for total breakaway from the concept of a united India. Had the Congress Party (and Nehru in particular) accepted the cabinet Mission Proposal in July 1946, which envisaged a federal India (one India), thewre would not have been any Partition, at least not in 1947. While India considers the communal rioting of 1946-47 as civil war between Hindus and Muslims, Pakistan glorifies it as their "Liberation War". Similarly, had Bhutto and his crooked associates, including Yahya Khan, accepted Sheikh Mujib as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, there would not have been any Bangladesh (not in 1971). As throughout history many racial, religious and sectarian conflicts eventually turned into liberation war, the Bangladesh Liberation struggle was no exception in this regard. I think, since we have so many other pressing problems in Bangladesh, exploitation of the poor and powerless people being the Number One Problem, we should rather concentrate on ways to liberate the people, bringing the actual freedom for the masses, which has NOT taken place yet. Warm wishes to all. Taj Hashmi ***************************************** Sign the Petition : Release the Arrested University Teachers Immediately : An Appeal to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh

Jamaat leader Mujahid faces sedition charges Wed, Dec 5th, 2007 4:45 pm BdST | | | Dhaka, Dec 5 (bdnews24.com) A freedom fighter Wednesday filed a sedition case against Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Md Mujahid and two others for anti-Liberation activities.
The other two accused in the case, filed by Md Fazlur Rahman of Companyganj, are Jamaat's assistant secretary general Abdul Kader Molla and former chairman of Islami Bank Shah Md Abdul Hannan.
This first such case of treason or sedition in recent times was filed under the Criminal Procedure Code with Dhaka CMM's Court. Metropolitan magistrate Imran Hossain Chowdhury heard the plaintiff's statement in the case.
The case accuses the three of obstructing the emergence of an independent Bangladesh in 1971, and creating and ordering the Razakar, Al Badr and Al Shams forces to kill pro-liberation civilians including intellectuals.
The plaintiff said the accused persons committed crimes of treason by killing about 30 lakh people, raping about two lakh women and other ill activities.
It also said that 36 years after liberation, the accused did not yet recognise Bangladesh's victory, flag, constitution or Independence Day.
The plaintiff Fazlur Rahman told bdnews24.com: "I could not file a case in the past due to the various adverse political situations in the country."
His counsel advocate Abu Mohammad Abdur Razzak said: "War crimes and murder cases can be filed any time."
The investigation officer of the case has the authority to approve it, he added.

Traditionalist ulema lead educational revolution in Kerala Posted December 6th, 2007 by kashif * Articles * Indian Muslim By Yoginder Sikand, TwoCircles.net Kerala's Muslims are unique among their co-religionists in India in fashioning a system of education that enables their children to attend both religious as well as regular schools at the same time. Muslims account for around a fourth of Kerala's population, and the state's Muslims, known as Mapillas, are among the most literate of the various Muslim communities in the country. Madrasas and schools run by literally hundreds of Muslim religious organizations in the state have made this possible. A recent study by Zubair Hudawi, himself a madrasa graduate from Kerala and presently a doctoral candidate at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, titled 'Development and Modernisation of Religious Education in Kerala: The Role of the Samastha Kerala Jameyyat ul-Ulama', discusses this contribution in great detail. The Samastha Kerala Jameyyat ul-Ulama (SKJU) represents a traditionalist theological position, quite opposed to Islamic modernists on numerous points. Yet, as Hudawi argues, it has not hesitated from championing modern education. Hudawi, who spent several years studying at the Dar ul-Huda Islamic Academy, the SKJU's leading centre for higher Islamic education, seeks to explain this enigma through an in-depth analysis of the organisation's evolution and development, arguing against the notion that the traditionalist ulema are necessarily and wholly opposed to 'modernity'. He argues that the SKJU is an excellent example of a traditionalist Muslim religious organization that, rather than opposing 'modernity' outright, actually facilitates it, albeit selectively. Thus, today, he writes, the SKJU runs not just several thousand madrasas but also numerous English- and Malayalam-medium schools, and scores of women's and technical colleges. The proactive role played by the SKJU, Hudawi argues, must be seen, in part, as a response to the emergence of new Muslim religious organizations promoting mass education in the early decades of the twentieth century, when reformist Kerala Muslim scholars set up institutions that combined both traditional Islamic as well as modern education and championed modernist interpretations of Islam. The Mapilla Revolt of 1921, crushed brutally by the British, proved a major turning point in this regard. It was similar in its impact to the suppression of the 1857 revolt for the Muslims of north India, creating a climate for reformers, concerned with the plight of the community, to emerge. They argued that the Mapillas had deviated from the 'original' Islam by incorporating a host of 'un-Islamic' customs, many of which the traditionalists upheld but which the modernists condemned as wrongful innovations. They saw Islam as positively encouraging, rather than, as some traditionalists argued, opposing, modern education, and called for a radical overhaul of the traditional system of madrasa education. Because they insisted that the Islamic scriptural resources could be accessed without the traditional ulema as intermediaries, the reformists were sharply condemned by the latter. Some of them were even condemned as apostates. Yet, they continued their work, setting up educational institutions that represented a major shift in the structure of religious authority from that represented by the earlier individual scholars or musaliyars. In place of traditional mosque schools (called othupallis in Malayalam) that focused on the memorization and recitation of texts but ignored writing skills, they set up modern schools that taught reading and writing and provided education in both religious and secular subjects. Several of these organizations, set up in the pre-1947 period, still exist today, running literally thousands of madrasas-cum-schools in the state, such as the Jamaat-e Islami and the two branches of the Kerala Nadwat ul-Mujahideen. Faced with the growing challenge of the reformists, which they saw as not only articulating what they regarded as 'un-Islamic' views but also as challenging their authority as interpreters of Islam, Kerala's traditionalist ulema first reacted by issuing fatwas against them and appealing to their followers to boycott them. However, witnessing the expansion of alternate Muslim religious groups at their expense, they soon decided to follow their path. In 1926, a group of traditionalist ulema, many of them also Sufi shaikhs, got together and established the SKJU in Calicut, the centre of the Mapillas of Malabar. Although its principal aim was to defend religious practices and beliefs which the modernists condemned as 'innovations', particularly those related to the cults of the Sufi saints, the SKJU also called for the promotion of modern education compatible with Islam and inter-communal harmony. The primary focus of the reformists who challenged the traditionalist ulema was on religious education, but, in contrast to many of their counterparts in northern India, they also sought to promote modern education, Muslims then being (as now) relatively marginalized compared to the other communities in the state on this front. After 1947, when Kerala was still part of the Madras state, the Government of Madras banned religious education in state-supported schools. This forced Muslim organizations in the region to set up educational boards that established literally thousands of part-time madrasas, enabling Muslim children to attend these as well as regular schools at the same time. In this way, most Muslim children in Kerala were able to receive madrasa education for a minimum of five years' public schooling. Separate madrasa education boards were set up by the main Muslim sectarian organizations, each of which prepared their own textbooks for madrasa students, appointed teachers and school inspectors and granted certificates. In 1951, the SKJU established its own religious educational committee, the Samastha Kerala Islam Matha Vidhyabhyasa Board, under which it set up a number of madrasas, for which it prepared a uniform set of graded texts, organized examinations, trained teachers and provided scholarships to needy students. Till the early 1970s, Hudawi writes, the SKJU remained aloof from the field of modern education, running, instead, a vast number of full-time madrasas in the traditional fashion. However, faced with the growing demand for modern education even among its followers, commonly known as 'Sunnis', it began to adopt the pattern of education of its reformist rivals. Today, the SKJU has almost 9000 part-time madrasas across Kerala, whose timings are adjusted in such a way as to enable their students to study in regular schools as well. Until 2005, the SKJU's educational board had issued certificates to over 19,00,000 students who had passed the fifth grade. It has prepared a series of textbooks in English for children from the upper kindergarten grade till high school that are used in its part-time madrasas, and is working on a similar set of texts in Urdu to cater to Muslims in north India, where it now has some branches. It has even expanded abroad, where it runs educational centres in several Gulf States where Malayali Muslims live. Besides its thousands of madrasas, today the SKJU runs a madrasa teachers' training centre, several shariah colleges that combine religious and secular education, scores of co-educational and women's schools and colleges, a committee to provide financial help to poor madrasa teachers, with almost 400 branches throughout Kerala, a madrasa teachers' pension scheme and separate magazines for children, women and madrasa teachers. It also runs a number of orphanages, some of which receive state funding. Some of these orphanages run schools, polytechnics, industrial training centres, presses, computer centres and dispensaries, besides madrasas. As Hudawi's study brilliantly demonstrates, stereotypical notions about the traditionalist ulema being wholly opposed to change need to be revised. The SKJU case demonstrates that, far from being fiercely hostile to modernity, many of them may be said to be creatively responding to the demands of modernity by attempting to fashion their own Islamic version of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zubair Hudawi can be contacted on zubyjnu@gmail.com Sukhia Sab Sansar Khaye Aur Soye Dukhia Das Kabir Jagey Aur Roye The world is 'happy', eating and sleeping The forlorn Kabir Das is awake and weeping ***************************************** Sign the Petition : Release the Arrested University Teachers Immediately : An Appeal to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh http://www.mukto-mona.com/human_rights/university_teachers_arrest.htm ***************************************** Daily Star publishes an interview with Mukto-Mona http://www.mukto-mona.com/news/daily_star/daily_star_MM.pdf ***************************************** MM site is blocked in Islamic countries such as UAE.
