Re: [vinnomot] A government in debt!!!????

I totally agree with this article.  But I may differ in one thing that you might have forgotten that oil price was US$50/barrel when CTG took the power and two natural disasters happened after then.  I am not supporting anyone here but we need to understand that the reality that any Govt in Bangladesh had to go through what CTG is going through.

I am not supporting CTG but I want people to understand the reality and global price hike of commodities before we jump in any conclusion about this debt.  Most of the debt was for oil bill. Of course debt is bad but Bangladesh has no other options to survive.  It is easy to blame others if we do not understand the economics. Just my 2 cents.

--M. M. Chowdhury (Mithu)

gopalsengupta@aol.com wrote:
A government in debt
Once again the caretaker government has reached its “debt ceiling,” and once again caretaker administration is poised to authorize an increase in government borrowing.  Between its ever-growing bureaucracies, expanding entitlements, and military entanglements, this government is borrowing roughly 10,000 crores Taka to pay its bills. Government debt carries absolutely no stigma for policy makers in Bangladesh.
Debt destroys nation's sovereignty, because the Bangladesh economy now depends on the actions of foreign governments and institutions.  Ultimately, debt is slavery.  Every taka the government borrows makes us less secure as a nation, by making Bangladesh beholden to interests inside the land as well as outside our borders.
According to the Bangladesh Bank statistics compiled up to December 4, the government borrowed about Tk 9,016 crore from the banking system in the first five months of the current fiscal year, which is 78 per cent more than the amount in the corresponding period of 2006-07 and overshoots the public borrowing target for 2007-08 by almost Tk 3,000 crore. Also, the increased government borrowing reflects poor revenue management. Not long ago, the government claimed a remarkable  surge in the number of people filing their income tax returns. Then again, it also claimed to have realised quite a hefty amount of revenue from people who had evaded tax for years. Clearly, something is amiss so that the government is forced into bank borrowing. On balance, it seems that the government has not only failed to make the economy vibrant but also fared poorly in terms of revenue management.

Subject: [khabor.com] Stand Up Against Khabor's Yellow Journalism

The 71-er Golpo team is calling on all conscious members of our community to sign this petition and denounce yellow journalism as demonstrated in the Khabor website.

In the main Khabor article on December 2, 2007, the Editor, Shibbir Ahmed has abused his position as a journalist to launch a smear campaign to undermine 71-er Golpo. The article, which contained comments by Harun Chowdhury, made unsubstantiated and baseless claims that the 71-er Golpo organizers are affiliated with anti-liberation forces (rajakars). The organizers challenged these individuals to corroborate their claims or retract the article and issue an apology in Khabor (Read statement issued by 71-er Golpo at http://71ergolpo.com/statement.html). Their failure to follow-up has compelled us to broadcast our grievance to the broader community.

This is NOT the first time Khabor has demonstrated poor and substandard journalism standards. We urge members of our community to speak out against unethical, malicious and sensationalistic journalism and boycott Shibbir Ahmed from reporting on future events.

[ VM does not believe in hate against hate-eye for eye. Even if author thinks Jamats are the worst animals on the earth, hatred towards them is not acceptable in VM. It is a place for logical, rational opposition. VM believes there is no place for hatred in democracy--Moderator]

Jamaat - Shibir (ICS) - Razakar - Al-Badar - Paki - PDP - Muslim League to be hated, condemned, resisted in all possible ways due to their past & present activities.

Even as per a "Moslim" & "Tirmiji" 'Hadith' (narrated below, as more or less),

The Messenger of Allah said:

"Resist an offender or "JALEEM" (who involved in killing, rape, torture):

  1. By hand/force, if you have not enough strength to do it, then
  2. You should do it with your tongue , and if you have not that power to do it,
  3. (Even) then you should hate them from your heart - and this is the sign of least status or rank of "IMAN" (faith).

So, Jamaat - Shibir (ICS) - Razakar - Al-Badar - Paki - PDP - Muslim League (BNP is cocktail of these) will be hated, criticized, damned as it was done in past and will be treated same at now and also be treated same in future, for hundreds and hundreds of years to come!

[vinnomot] A government in debt!!!????

A government in debt

Once again the caretaker government has reached its "debt ceiling," and once again caretaker administration is poised to authorize an increase in government borrowing.
