Dear Jahed and Mehul Kamdar,

Thank you for posting Ami Isseroff's response to A. H. Jaffor Ullah's "How did the Zionists get their land?"

I think this demonstrates that you are truly open and fully Humanistic (in all other respects, I had no
question about it) even in this extremely intractable and most controversial matter: the Israeli-Palestistian
conflict.

Let me clarify that I never accused you, Jahed, or your fellow editors of beind "anti-Semitic." But I did and
do find some of the articles under "Current Affairs: Israel-Palestine" like the one in question to be filled with anti-Israel,
and, therefore, "anti-Semitic" elements.

Ami Isseroff responds fully. So do you really think I must emphasize passages like "Why did they not address
the issue of displacement of a huge number of local Arabs by the establishment of Israel?" (of course,
without any reference to why they were displaced or whatever to the displacement of some 800,000 Jews
from Arab lands) and "a well-orchestrated propaganda bears fruit!" (ah, so propagand is what the "other"
claims) and "which the Jewish folks claimed to be their ancient homeland" (oh, history is to be disregarded)
and "infamous Balfour Declaration" (a very objective position) and "weird view that the Jews living outside
Israel were living in 'exile'" (once again, very objective) and "selfish behavior of the Zionists" (oh, if only
Ullah would take a look at the postage stamp that is Israel in its present form placed in a sea of Arab and
Muslim nations, would he more objectively reflect on just who is being "selfish"?)?

No, I don't think I need to; just read Ami Isseroff's fuller response. The distorted history (fiilled with so many
outright errors) that Ullah provides as a setting for his argument is more than sufficient to suggest that he
should first study then speak; but of course this would require a far more objective and open mind. If he
can't do this, then he should be silent.

However, the truth is rarely pure and never simple. He does end his article with what appears to be a view
towards wanting to see a reasonable settling of the issue (at least in his view): "How these two
distinct groups of people can live side-by-side harmoniously and peacfully should be the concern of us at
this time." Here, here for this ending to a very problematic article.

LAHORE: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly forced to marry her 35-year-
old physically handicapped cousin to settle a gambling debt. The
incident took place in Akhtarabad near Okara on Tuesday. The husband is
the girl's cousin and cannot hear or speak. The girl's father owed

I am much grateful to the Mukto Mona moderator's team for letting us know about the concerns of Mr.Stanley Barkan. I am sure that Mr; Barkan is not quite aware of the true mission of Mukto Mona. If he was a regular visitor to this group his views would have been different. This forum has a mission to uphold the essence of freedom challenging all kinds of ignorance and dogmas. We express our views without fear and favour. As for me I subscribe a Jewish leaning daily newspaper in Toronto, The National Post, and frequently write in this news paper. Day after 9/11 when some Palestinian danced on the streets of Gaza, I expressed my disgust. I vigorously protested when Dr.Mohammed El Misery of Canadian Islamic Congress said all the Israelis were the legitimate target of the Palestinian suicide bombers. Like me there are many members who always speak about the rights of the Palestinian and Jewish people in the prolonged Arab-Israeli conflict. If one or two persons showed any
bias towards any one group many of us are there to oppose them. So the spirit of Mukto Mona is unbiased and always supportive of free thinking and a just cause.

Moderator's Note: We have received this article today vide Mr Stanley
Barkan, a poet and publisher from New York who has conveyed his
concerne so Mr Jahed Ahmed of our moderation team, that ours is an
Anti-Semitic group. We did invite Mr Barkan to show us a single
article that he could find on our approved articles pages to support
this view, and, indeed, if he does, we would be happy to respond
based on whatever he has to show us. In the meantime, this is an
article that he would like us to post on our forums and we are happy
to do this. We would like our members to know that our invitation to
Messrs Barkan and Isseroff to join MM and participate in debate here
is open. On a different note, this seems to be a full turn of the
wheel from two months ago when the Daily Naya Diganta published an
article naming several of us calling us Mossad agents.

How did the Zionists get their land?

I have read the very interesting article, "How did the Zionists get
their land" by A.H. Jaffor Ullah. I commend his willingness to let
bygones be bygones, as that is what must happen on both sides in
order to bring peace, but I must correct some obvious errors and
distortions in his work.

It is a deception to believe that Zionism began only in the latter
part of the 19th century, as Ullah claims, and the following
statement is somewhere between absurdity and blasphemy:

Many orthodox Jews in Israel held this weird view that the Jews
outside Israel were living in "exile" and could live a full life only
in the Promised Land, Israel.
The connection of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel is attested
to the Qur'an and New Testament, as well as in the Old Testament
which Muslims profess to hold sacred. The ancient kingdoms of the
Jews were recorded by Roman and Greek historians, as was their
conquest by the Romans and the exile of the Jews, completed finally
by the Crusaders.

For 2,000 years, Jews prayed for the peace of Zion and prayed
for "Next Year in Jerusalem" - a dream that was impossible to
fulfill. Herzl's innovation was the invention of a political Zionist
movement that could turn the dream into the reality. The idea that
Jews outside Israel are living in exile has been a staple of Jewish
culture for 2,000 years, and it is shared by orthodox, conservative,
reform and secular Jews, as well as Christians Muslims and atheists
of every nationality who know the history of the Jews. It is a
historic fact, not a "weird view."

We Zionists got our land by living in it, by buying it, by working
for it and building it, and by fighting for it. About 1800, there
were about 200,000 people in all in this impoverished and neglected
area of the Ottoman empire, which included parts of various Turkish
Vilayets and Sanjaks, but was not a separate entity
called "Palestine." A few Jews lived here, and relatively more
Christian Arabs and Muslim Arabs. In Jerusalem, there was a plurality
of Jews by 1844. The Turkish government, perceiving the
underpopulation, tried to rectify it. For some reason, the Turks
imported only Muslims from abroad, and frowned on the idea that the
Jews of Palestine should have the same rights as Muslims.
Nonetheless, Jews came to the land Palestine was never an entity
under the Turkish empire as Mr Ullah claims. The area of Palestine
had no politically separate administration under the Turks. It would
be interesting to know where Mr. Ullah got this fantastic idea.

Following the solemn promise of the international community that
Palestine could become the national home of the Jewish People, given
in the League Mandate for Palestine, the Zionists purchased land, and
Zionist industry and Zionist labor and investment transformed
Palestine and Israel from the armpit of the decaying Ottoman empire
to the jewel of the Levant. The British removed the largest part of
the Palestine mandate, 78% and illegally gave it to the Arabs under
Abdullah, thus providing for the rights of the Arabs of Palestine and
giving them a homeland. Nonetheless, the Zionists persisted in
developing the land. Land was purchased wherever Arabs would sell it
and public land was acquired as well. In violation of the terms of
the Mandate, the British were giving away the greater part of the
public lands in Palestine to Arabs, and later they restricted the
sale of land to Jews.

By 1948, each Palestinian Jew produced four times as much as each
Arab, and all the development of Palestine, including the education
and services provided to Arabs, was funded from the taxes paid by the
Jews. Nonetheless, the Arabs of Palestine, led by the Nazi Grand
Mufti of Jerusalem, insisted on blockng Jewish settlement in
Palestine and even on preventing the immigration to Palestine of Jews
escaping the Nazi Holocaust. The Mufti intervened personally to
prevent the rescue of 10,000 Jewish orphans, who were sent to
Auschwitz and murdered instead.

Far from suffering under the British mandate, the Arabs of Palestine
benefitted. Their standard of living rose until it was higher than
that of their neighboring Arab cousins in Egypt, Jordan Lebanon and
Syria, and Arabs streamed into Palestine. By 1948, thanks to high
birthrate and immigration, there were 1.8 million Arabs in the area
of Palestine left to the Jews after partition of Transjordan. Arab
Transjordan remained underpopulated and underdeveloped.

After World War II, the injustice that was being done to the Jewish
people became apparent to the entire world. The cynical British
imperialists were forced to relinquish their now illegal rule of
Palestine, which no longer fulfilled the purpose of the Mandate, and
to allow the creation of two states, a Jewish State and an Arab
state. Palestine was to be divided once again. In total, the Arabs
would have about 90% and the Jews would have a tiny part, with
another area given over as a "Corpus Separatum" comprising Jerusalem
and Bethlehem.
This partition plan solution should be familiar to your readers:
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh were created in the same way.

The Arabs opposed the UN resolution that partitioned Palestine, and
started a genocidal war to rid Palestine of the Jews. When they lost
the war, Arab Palestinians who had fled their homes found themselves
homeless, just as Jews who fled areas conquered by the Arabs found
themselves homeless. The Israeli government resettled the Jewish
refugees, whereas the Arab countries penned up the Arab refugees in
refugee camps and limited their rights.

Most of the land in Palestine was government land or land that
belonged to municipalities. When the state of Israel was formed, that
land, along with the tiny amount that Jews had been allowed to
purchase, became "Zionist land" and with it, the land that had been
abandoned by fleeing refugees. That is how the "Zionists got their
land. Arabs who stayed still have their land. When Pakistan was
formed, the land and property abandoned by fleeing Hindus became
property of the Pakistanis, did it not?

In the fifties and sixties, Israel got pitiful amounts of aid from
the USA, some Holocaust reperations from Germany and small donations
from Jews living abroad. In contrast, the Arab countries had
plentiful oil revenues that they could have used to develop Arab
Palestine, but did not. Egypt invested all of its meager resources in
purchasing arms from the USSR, mortgaging its cotton crop to do so.
While the supposedly evil and greedy Zionists constructed an
irrigation system to take their fair share of the waters of the
Jordan, the Arab states did nothing except to try to divert the
headwaters of the Jordan in order to deprive Israel of the water.
While the Jews built factories and farms and achieved the highest
standard of living of any non-oil state in the Middle East, the Arabs
built suicide bomber vests and invested in the most advanced Soviet
tanks and airplanes. When Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza in
1967, the per capita GDP of the Arab inhabitants had been about $300.
By the time Israel relinquished foll control, per capita income was
$2,400. Under Arab Palestinian rule, income has sunk to about $800.
In a single day, more water is pumped today in Israel than was pumped
in all of the year 1948 in Palestine and Israel. More Arabs live
between the river and the sea than have ever lived in this land in
all of recorded history.

Since we reviewed how the Zionists got their land, it is interesting
to explore how the Arabs of Palestine got their land as well. Here
are a few examples - Many of the Christian "Arabs" are descended from
the Crusader invaders who came here, murdered Muslims and Jews,
settled down and married. The Nusseibeh family may have come with
Umar, who conquered Palestine about 638. The Husseini family came
with the Mameluk Turks. The Nashashibis were bowmen in the army of
Salah Eddin. Other "Arabs" of "Palestine" were imported by the
Ottoman government from Bosnia and Circassia and other places in the
19th century. These conquerers and settlers never paid a penny for
any land - it was all taken by force, from other conquerers who took
it by force from its only rightful owners - the Jews. Other Arabs
came from Syria in the 1930s and 1940s to build the port of Haifa and
to work in it.

Every Arab who ever lived here knew what Mr. Ullah denies: that the
land belongs to the Jews, and that the Arab names of the towns were
in reality mostly derived from the ancient Hebrew names. "Yibne"
from "Yavneh," "Birsaba" from "Beersheba" "Beisan" from "Beth
Shean," "Beit Lehem" was "Beit lehem" which the Christians know
as "Bethlehem" and "Jaffa" was "Yaffo."

Izzedin El Qassam, the hero of the Palestine terrorist movement who
inspired the pogroms of 1936-9 and whose name is given to the Hamas
terrorist army, was born in Syria, some time after my grandmothers
were born in Jerusalem. If he was "Palestinian" then I can be
a "Bangladeshi."

Turkey allocates $120 mln for promotion activities

Turkey has allocated a $120 million budget to promote its tourism riches in Europe and across the world, officials from the Culture and Tourism Ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry's official campaign to promote Turkey's resorts will be launched in January. In 2007, the ministry had three different campaigns, targeting separately the European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern markets. The ministry found that the strategy worked well and so it will also be the method of this year's campaigns to promote Turkey. The ministry has launched tenders to award the promotion campaigns to private advertising companies; some of these have already been completed.

Özgür Özarslan, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's general manager, said in the past four years, campaigns to promote Turkish tourism have begun as early in the year as January and have proved to be quite fruitful in attracting more tourists. The ministry's $120 million budget to promote Turkey in 2008 will be allocated to 10 separate campaigns in different regions of the world. Video clip showings, billboards, fairs and Internet-based advertising will all be parts of this year's promotional campaigns, Özarslan explained, adding that tourists from the Far East will be lured by highlighting the wealth of sites, artifacts, buildings and monuments Turkey offers for cultural tourism. Turkey's natural beauties, including the sea, sand and sky, in addition to health and spa tourism will be used to attract European tourists.

In the past, representatives of Turkey's tourism sector abroad and ministry officials were usually confronted with questions regarding safety in Turkey. In the past few years, though, this question has started to disappear, Özarslan said. "When we go abroad, we now see that Turkey's image as an unsafe country has disappeared. We don't get questions in that direction anymore." He said the change was a result of campaigns the ministry has been conducting in the past few years.

In the upcoming year, the ministry plans to intensify its campaigns to promote Turkish holiday resorts of Turkey in the United States. Özarslan said the campaign sought to increase the number of wealthier US tourists.

He was charming, witty, and took blame upon himself. Adviser Ayub Quadri, was the Minister of Education, Minister of Primary and Mass Education and Minister of Cultural Affairs, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He was the perfect guy to rely upon for damage control. The public school background showed, as did the many years as a top bureaucrat. He had been a member of the elite Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP). An old boys network that still holds clout in the subcontinent.

The Press Information Department (PID) auditorium on the 3rd floor of Building 9, in the Bangladesh Secretariat was packed. Unlike many other Bangladeshi events this press conference started on time. Squeezing through the footpaths, crossing fences, lifting my bicycle over rickshaws stuck in traffic, I had panted my way to the secretariat. The police at gate 2 had been too perplexed by a bicycle going through the gate to even stop me for papers. I arrived just as the first question was raised. It was a packed hall, and while I thought I would stay at the back, I realised that I needed to get up there to stand any chance of getting a question in. I sat on the floor in between the video tripods.

The journalists had done their homework. And while there were a few questions that were repetitive, by and large, they knew what they wanted. In response to a question about the alleged corruption charges against one of the government officials involved in the transaction, the adviser joked. "Well I am the person in overall charge. The police don't seem to be after me for corruption." Pretty answer. Pity it didn't answer the question.

The large table with the adviser in the middle was imposing. The Secretary of Culture on the left and another officer on the right played a largely ornamental role. So did the entire row of officials in the back. They did however lean forward to whisper in the adviser's ear from time to time. The question came up of the alleged transportation of the bronze casket in 1959 to France, which Mr. Zakaria, the ex Secretary of Culture had mentioned in a press conference on the 1st December. The adviser let the question slip, saying he'd heard of such accusations and was looking into it. A member of the back row broke ranks and retorted, "There is no such record." Mr. Zakaria, also an ex director of the department of archaeology, had mentioned a 49 year fight to get back this prized possession, without success. A journalist mentioned the case of the 30 paintings of Mohammad Younus. They had been sent to Yugoslavia, on a government to government exchange. None had ever come back. Quadri again said he didn't know. "Don't know" was quite a common response to questions. Candid perhaps, but not particularly useful.

In answer to the questions about the irregularities regarding the loan inventory, the adviser did provide figures, but no documents he could back them up with. Questions from the floor pointed to the disjoint between the figures he quoted and the ones given in the government documents submitted to the court. That they didn't correspond to the inventory produced by the French themselves. He promised to provide updated documents this very evening. Tomorrow morning at the latest. Why the government had provided documents to the court which did not tally with the shipment, was a question that never got asked, and was certainly not clarified. The mystery of calling a press conference, but not having these documents at hand was never solved by the guests.

"I have full confidence that the items will come back." He said, taking the weight of the world on his shoulders. As to why Bangladeshis should have confidence in him, was one that was never clarified.

"The company that had packed the crates have been doing so for 300 years," he mentioned. The doubters have been asking for the packers to be named ever since the beginning, but have not been given an answer. Those who had thought the press conference would enlighten them were disappointed.

Since only government members of the committee were present, there was no one to question the claim that everything had been done to please the committee. That the committee had been fully satisfied with the proceedings. The fact that the official letter by the committee, in the hands of the press, said something entirely different was a mere technicality.

The inconsistencies were the problem. We still don't know exactly how many items are being sent. Neither do we know exactly what is being sent. The few specifics the advisor provided, that there were "50 silver coins, and 8 gold coins," might have helped in purchasing supplies for an Everest expedition, but didn't help much in evaluating either the value, or the specifics of a museum item. Especially when the court record states "50 punchmarked coins" in one entry and an unspecified number of "gold and silver coins" in another. Assuming the number of silver coins in the latter entry is non-zero, and that the punchmarked coins are all silver, we still have a problem. The French inventory specifies "93 punch marked coins." Are the "gold and silver coins" non-punchmarked? Do they add up to the "8 gold coins" the adviser was referring to? 50 + non-zero number = 50 and 50 + 8 = 93 in Ayub Quadri's arithmetic.

There are bigger issues. He generally accepted that the insurance value was low, but claimed that it was an academic issue in the case of priceless items. Especially since he was confident that they were all coming back. However the French press release, issued on the 25th September 2007, stated that the insurance value was 4 million euro. The adviser today clearly stated 2.6 million euro. So who are we to believe? We are after all talking of the most prized possessions of a nation. Consistent statements help remove doubt. The adviser's "confidence" might work on a poker table, but does little to put a worried population at ease.

He brushed off the accusation about whisking off the items in a hurry, or that there was any question of impropriety or stealth in terms of going against court directives. When asked why such an important event, which was covered by all major independent media, was completely unreported on state television, he smiled. The gentleman on the right did speak up this time. He pointed out that the question was "irrelevant."

Other questions remain. Gold and silver coins is one thing. In the documents presented to the court by the government, even one of the most valued items, the large (and extremely rare) bronze statue the Vajrasattva does include an insurance value (not always the case for other items listed) of 200,000 euro. This item too does not have an accession number.

Quadri was unruffled throughout, never losing cool. Always extremely pleasant. His only admission to some concern was in answer to a question about when the items would come back. He said in no uncertain terms, "April." He added, "Until then, I will stay worried, and looking at the mood in the room, I can tell that you too will not rest." I hope he meant 2007.

As a child, we would watch the candy floss man take a tiny spoonful of sugar, a dollop of colouring and would watch with amazement as the machine spun out a pink web, which he would twirl around a stick. One portion was only dui poisha (two paisa). A figure which we could realistically save up. The large pink fluff, folded on contact, and melted in the mouth, but did give a sense of attainment. We called it hawai mithai, sweet made of air. This candy floss press conference too, had little substance but plenty of form.

Whether the media kids will feel they got value for their dui poisha is something we'll see in tomorrow's headlines.

It is further learnt that at least two of the advisors in the present interim government are actively involved with the entire scam.
