[vinnomot] India’s Bollywood power

SAN-Feature Service
SOUTH ASIAN NEWS-FEATURE SERVICE
January 11,2008

India's Bollywood power
Shashi Tharoor

There's still much for India to do to ensure that its people are healthy, well fed, and secure. Progress is being made: the battle against poverty is slowly (too slowly) being won.

SAN-Feature Service : The world has heard much about India's extraordinary transformation in recent years, and even of its claims to a share of "world leadership". Some of that is hyperbole, but in one respect, India's strength may be understated.

What makes a country a world leader? Is it population, military strength, or economic development? By all of these measures, India has made extraordinary strides. It is on course to overtake China as the world's most populous country by 2034, it has the world's fourth-largest army and nuclear weapons, and it is already the world's fifth-largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity and continues to climb, though too many of its people remain destitute.

All of these indicators are commonly used to judge a country's global status. However, something much less tangible, but a good deal more valuable in the twenty-first century, may be more important than any of them: India's "soft power".

Take Afghanistan, for instance — a major security concern for India, as it is for the world. But India's greatest asset there doesn't come out of a military mission: it doesn't have one. It comes from one simple fact: don't try to telephone an Afghan at 8:30 in the evening. That's when the Indian TV soap opera "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", dubbed into Dari, is telecast on Tolo TV, and no one wishes to miss it.

"Saas" is the most popular television show in Afghan history, with a 90 percent audience penetration. It's considered directly responsible for a spike in the sale of generator sets and even for absences from religious functions which clash with its broadcast times. "Saas" has so thoroughly captured the public imagination in Afghanistan that, in this deeply conservative Islamic country where family problems are often literally hidden behind the veil, it's an Indian TV show that has come to dominate (and sometimes to justify) public discussion of family issues.

That's soft power, and its particular strength is that it has nothing to do with government propaganda. The movies of Bollywood, which is bringing its glitzy entertainment far beyond the Indian diaspora in the United States and the United Kingdom, offer another example. A Senegalese friend told me of his illiterate mother who takes a bus to Dakar every month to watch a Bollywood film — she doesn't understand the Hindi dialogue and can't read the French subtitles, but she can still catch the spirit of the films and understand the story, and people like her look at India with stars in their eyes as a result. An Indian diplomat in Damascus a few years ago told me that the only publicly displayed portraits as big as those of then-President Hafez al-Assad were of the Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Indian art, classical music and dance have the same effect. So does the work of Indian fashion designers, now striding across the world's runways. Indian cuisine, spreading around the world, raises Indian culture higher in people's reckoning; the way to foreigners' hearts is through their palates. In England today, Indian curry houses employ more people than the iron and steel, coal and shipbuilding industries combined.

When a bhangra beat is infused into a Western pop record or an Indian choreographer invents a fusion of kathak and ballet; when Indian women sweep the Miss World and Miss Universe contests, or when "Monsoon Wedding" wows the critics and "Lagaan" claims an Oscar nomination; when Indian writers win the Booker or Pulitzer Prizes, India's soft power is enhanced.

Likewise, when Americans speak of the IITs, India's technology institutes, with the same reverence they accord to MIT, and the "Indianness" of engineers and software developers is taken as synonymous with mathematical and scientific excellence, India gains in respect.

In the information age, as Joseph Nye, the guru of soft power, argues, it is not the side with the bigger army, but the side with the better story, that wins. India is already the "land of the better story". As a pluralist society with a free and thriving mass media, creative energies that express themselves in a variety of appealing ways, and a democratic system that promotes and protects diversity, India has an extraordinary ability to tell stories that are more persuasive and attractive than those of its rivals.

And there's the international spin-off of India just being itself. India's remarkable pluralism was on display after national elections in May 2004, when a leader with a Roman Catholic background (Sonia Gandhi) made way for a Sikh (Manmohan Singh) to be sworn in as Prime Minister by a Muslim (President Abdul Kalam) — in a country that is 81 percent Hindu. No strutting nationalist chauvinism could ever have accomplished for India's standing in the world what that one moment did — all the more so since it was not directed at the world.

There's still much for India to do to ensure that its people are healthy, well fed, and secure. Progress is being made: the battle against poverty is slowly (too slowly) being won. But India's greatest prospects for winning admiration in the twenty-first century may lie not in what it does, but simply in what it is. –SAN-Feature Service

[vinnomot] Kirlian Aura Photography

From: "Virginia F. Raines"

Kirlian Aura Photography
Listen to Karl talk about Kirlian Aura Photography
(You will need Real Audio which you can download for free )
If you wander through a Psychic Fair, or a Mind/Body/Soul Festival, you will soon encounter Kirlian Photography. If you pay money, you'll get a colour photo of your aura.

The human body definitely gives off heat, smells and sounds - but what is this "aura"? Well, in the Land of New Age, every living creature (carrot, human or mosquito) supposedly has an aura that reflects the supernatural "energy field" that, we are told, permeates all life. After all, don't depictions of Jesus Christ and various saints show a spiritual "halo" surrounding the head?

But Science was troubled by the "aura" until 1911, when Dr. Walter J. Kilner claimed in his book, The Human Atmosphere, that he could see the human aura and use it to diagnose diseases. However, his diagnostic accuracy was pretty poor.

The next burst of interest happened with Semyon Davidovich Kirlian, an electrical technician in Krasnodar in Russia. In 1939, he noticed that if he touched high-voltage electronics in a darkened environment, a fuzzy, coloured glow extended around his body. He and his biologist wife, Valentina, spent years studying this strange phenomenon together, and in 1961, they published their results in the Russian Journal of Scientific and Applied Photography. They passed high-voltage high-frequency electricity through a test object, while it sat on photographic paper. The current was kept very low, to keep it relatively safe. Kirlian believed that he could photograph auras, and get important diagnostic health information about plants, animals and humans. In 1970, Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder published their book, Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain - and that's when Kirlian Photography reached the West.

In the West, in the 1970s, in the afterglow of Flower Power, the interest in cosmic stuff like auras really took off.

So by the 1980s, James Randi (The Amazing Randi) was offering $US 100,000 to anybody who could prove they could see an aura. One psychic claimed that not only could she could see the auras of 20 people on a stage, she could even see these auras extending beyond their bodies. The people were then taken off stage, and 20 free-standing screens were put on the stage. Some of the screens had people behind them - and some did not. She claimed that she could see the auras of people extending quite a distance beyond people's bodies - but, in the test, she could not accurately choose which screens had people behind them.

So what does Kirlian photography really show? Is it the human "bioplasma energy field" or our "life energy"? Nope, it's plain old water.

The high-voltage high-frequency electricity has enough energy to rip the electrons off atoms. So the air around the object becomes ionized, and if the air contains any water, you get this lovely glow. The scientists call this glow a "corona plasma discharge" - but you can also think of it as "slow lightning". Luckily for the photographers, people in an excited state sweat more. The sweat turns into water vapour, which carries the high-voltage high-frequency electricity more easily through the air.

At least 22 factors influence the final image. These include the force and angle with which your hand is held against the metal touch plate, the atmospheric pressure, the voltage pulse rate and, of course, humidity. Indeed, Kirlian photographs of the same person, taken only minutes apart are so different (thanks to changes in water vapour levels) that they look like they came from different people. In fact, the Kirlian image disappears in a vacuum (where there's no water vapour) - but if it were due to a fundamental paranormal energy field, it should survive.

Some of the fair-ground Kirlian operators have taken the process one stage further. They get your image via a digital camera, and then add the pretty colours around your body's outline from an image manipulation program on a computer - and don't even do high-voltage, high-frequency electricity thingie. It's just the modern electronic version of sticking your face in a cardboard cutout of a famous person, and being photographed as that person.

In other words, Kirlian Photography is just a charlatan's magic trick. It uses fancy pseudo-scientific apparatus to trick people into believing that the operator has some kind of scientific credibility - and it is this, that helps transfer money into the operator's wallet.

Wolfram,

You *still* did not include information.

However, I could readily identify from the attached photo that it was some "aura" business so I was able to track it down quickly using the label words (blue green social heartful communicative).
First, that photo has been "photo-shopped" -- aura photos don't really come out exactly like that.

Second, aura business is just another one of the New Age promos.

Third, there is no "discipline" behind all these "explanations" about what the colors are supposed to mean, much less the supposed connection to "chakras".

Fourth, to assert that jews don't have auras is beyond ludicrous.  NO, jews aren't "evil forces".

Here are some "real" examples

The Aura
--------
Each of us builds our own prison or our own palace.
Every conscious thought, every utterance of our lips, every interaction of ours with the world leaves its imprint upon an aura that surrounds each of us and stays with us wherever we go. All life, all blessing, all that is transmitted from Above must pass through that aura. Even if it be the greatest of blessings, the aura may distort it into ugly noise. Or it may resonate and amplify it even more.
An aura of beauty attracts beauty. An aura of love attracts love. An aura of life and joy attracts unbounded light.
Only you are the master of that aura. Only you have the permission and the power at any moment to transform your thoughts from the ugly to the beautiful, your words from bitter to sweet, your deeds from death to life.
And so too, your entire world.
A Daily Dose of Wisdom from the Rebbe - words and condensation by Tzvi Freeman

[vinnomot] Trunkman on NRB conference

Since Mr. Ayubi has chased down your forums and have become a member of your forums just to spread lies against me without any shred of evidence, I think, I have right to explain that he had constantly written against me and one day, I had countred that out of his 12 posts, 8 were putting me down or using bad language against me or spreading lies against me.

Mr. Ayubi is part of the International Team of Religious Extremists or Mollaas, who have been after me and broad-minded Moslims like me for years and once had even sent 2 Assassins to kill me, both of whom had been caught and were jailed in USA.

Mr. Ayub was successful in getting me kicked out of Notun Bangladesh Forum and it was only then, I had decided become member of all Bangla Forums to see if all Moderators of Bangla Forums are like that. I used to be member of 50 Moslim Forums and these people got me kicked-out from all of them but one because I didn't realize there was a campaign going on againt me.
Here I prove this Rajakaar Mollaa Ayubi, (who wants Bangladesh to become another Talibani Afghanistan) is not following Islam by spreading lies against me and calling me 'Trunkman' instead of my legal last name in USA 'Turkman' by quoting words of Allah in Qoraan:

Qoraan 49:11
O' Believers, niether make fun of each because nobody is better than the other nor, make fun of names of each other. Indeed, is a Sin to go back to the days of Illiteracy (Savagery) after becoming Moslims.

Qoraan 48:12
O' Believers, avoid Suspicion (against each other) because even a little Suspicion is Sin. Do not spy on each other, do not talk behind each others back, do not verbally attack each other or do back-biting because doing so is same as eating Flesh of your Dead Brother.

Now its up to you to decide if I have been on your forums doing, what he has accused me of doing, when you knew not much about him before my this post.

[vinnomot] Human Auroa

This is a lie that Jews have no hallo because even leaves of a tree show this form of energy until they die.
Its true that hallo changes according to our emotions temporarily but everybody has certain colors in his/her hallo above his/her head almost permanently.

*  Violent and too Sexually-inclined People have most of it Red.
*  Law-abiding or Fundamentalist kind of people have most of it Green.
*  People in love have it in Light Blue.
*  Sufis have it Dark Blue.
*  Children's and Child-like low I.Q. adults have it Pink.
*  Psychics and people at higher level of spirituality have it Purple or Indigo.
*  People with nothing but Darkness in their hearts or hate in their Minds love Black just like Taliban did and wore Black Turbans. If you can't see their Hallo, it doesn't mean, it doesn't exist.

[vinnomot] VIRGINIA IS A sex maniacs

But let me inform you, this kind of stuff doesn't take place in Morroco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, Lebanon, Syria, Central Asian Countries, India, Bangladesh, Malayasia, Indonesia, Brunie and you know, in advamced countries, where Moslims have migrated to or in former Eastern Block Countries of Europe.

Turk,

Yes, if you're not on the parent's list of suitable husbands by the time the girl is several years old, you probably won't have a chance otherwise -- thought it's hard to tell at such a young age if she's going to turn out to be a hot babe at 13.

Naturally, if the rape occurs as a result of a spontaneous act of passion without long-term intentions, and you have enough money in the bank, you could probably just pay the parents to ignore the incident -- as long as you didn't kill the girl as well.

Even then, if financial resources aren't a problem for you, money would certainly console the grieving parents.  Of course, if you were lucky enough to be one of the feudal elite, you would just threaten the whole family with death and probably nothing else would come of it.
From Khomeini's book, "Tahrirolvasyleh", fourth volume, Darol Elm, Gom, Iran, 1990:
A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However he should not penetrate, sodomising the child is OK. If the man penetrates and damages the child then he should be responsible for her subsistence throughout her life. This girl, however does not count as one of his four permanent wives. The man will not be eligible to marry the girls sister......................
It is better for a girl to marry in such a time when she would begin menstruation at her husband's house rather than her father's home. Any father marrying his daughter so young will have a permanent place in heaven.

Thank you for letting me know. I would remember that if I ever went to Egypt and fell in love with a little girl there. Islamic Law is fun for men, isn't it?

This man certainly seems to be enjoying the opportunity to have oral sex with the vulva of Uzza.

It has been reported that Egypt has a minimum of 10,000 rapes a year. In a multitude of cases, the "rapist" would marry the "victim-woman," and under Article 291 of Egypt's legal code, the rapist-perpetrator would walk away free because the victim wife would generally request the authorities to drop all charges against the rapist-husband. This has also been the case with "gang rapes," where one of the rapists would marry the woman and the rest of the gang would go free. The Egyptian government is trying to change this barbaric practice permitted under this grotesque law. How does the shari`a view this criminal situation?
Another Egyptian situation: It seems that young Muslim men have been marrying "converted" girls (originally Coptic and Christian), below 18 years of age -- some even as young as 13. Added to his human drama, the parents of the girls are denied access to the girls by the men's family. Basically, a man can take a girl to a police station (or government office), have the (minor) girl repeat the shahada in front of two witnesses and she thus becomes a "Muslim." These conversions are even assisted by the police. In addition, the conversion is generally based on the Hanafi School of Law, which permits "conversion" as young as 7years of age. Egyptian civil law prohibits a girl under 21 from marrying without the consent of her father.

[vinnomot] Failed Fakhruddin Fallacy - Blitz Commentary

Failed Fakhruddin Fallacy

Blitz Commentary
Five advisors of the present interim government had to already resign for their 'failure' in performing their specific obligations to the nation. But, according to neutral analysts, it was not only the failure of those ousted advisors, but their massive corruption, nepotism and all forms of irregularities. The present government came in power with the slogan of combating corruption. People of Bangladesh wholeheartedly welcomed them, because the entire nation was in a state of captivity in the grips of some corrupt people, who were either government us, or were being blessed by the people in power. But the aspiration of the people turned wrong and cracked, when many of the advisors of the present interim government were also seen doing almost the same thing and this time people are unable to raise voice against corruption or irregularities of the advisors, as the present government is protected by State of Emergency, who stops people of Bangladesh from a number of fundamental rights. When the country is depriving its people of human rights and fundamental rights for long one year under the grab of State of Emergency, certainly the international community may start considering the nation being captivated once again by a bunch of rouge elements.
It is crystal clear that most of the ousted members of the advisory council are no angels. But, what is with the non-resigning five plus one members of the council? Do they consider themselves to be 'successful'? How the chief advisor will ignore his failure too, as his team has openly admitted their failure and resigned from the council? We all know that Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed is a man of integrity. In this case, a clear question to the chief advisor, does your conscious knock you at least now when five of the members of your team have already admitted failure? Don't you think that, it will be glorious for you to resign right away, at the failure of your team? This will make you the ever-memorable individual in the history of Bangladesh. But, we all know, whoever gets the 'opportunity' of riding into the number one position in power house, he or she never wishes to leave that seat, unless forced either by the people or by other elements.
Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed's government will complete its one-year tenure soon. And, it is not going to be a moment of glory. Rather, it is moment of shame for the government [if such things are yet active in them]. This government has failed to control the prices of essentials. Rice has crossed all previous record price. People of Bangladesh, especially the lower middle class are already starving. People without food are already seen in various parts of the country, including the capital. This government has openly smuggled out invaluable artifacts to a foreign land, just because, a number of advisors in the present interim government were partners in the crime. This government has shut down several jute mills and other industrial enterprises, thus pushing thousands of workers and employees to unemployment. This government has even failed to make the trial process of the politicians credible or transparent. There are numerous proven allegations that most of the charges brought against the arrested politicians are false and concocted. There are even numerous allegations of serious irregularities with the arrested people, during remand [interrogation]. The government should know with certainty that a large section of the society although still in dark about what has happened with the arrested politicians, the matter is now absolutely unknown to all. Such matters shall definitely turn into great problems for each and every members of the interim government, once they are not using the national flag of Bangladesh. The nation has already witnessed how the politicians were arrested en messe, and treated like thieves and thugs. If Dr. Ahmed will not take any lesson from it, he will only have to wait for the repeating of the history, as it repeats always. We truly wanted to greet Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed on completion of his one year tenure. But, evidences of failure by him and his team members are compelling us from not doing that. This is not any moment of celebration in Bangladesh. This is one of the darkest periods in the history of our nation. We are now government by a failed government.

[vinnomot] My Excuse

My Excuse For My Excuse
Your excuse for making an excuse may be that you don't want something bad enough

In all likelihood, you may not achieve everything in life that you want. On the other hand, if you've achieved everything in life you've ever wanted, chances are that your goals haven't forced you to struggle enough to experience failure. Does this statement surprise you? It shouldn't. Why? If you've never set a target to achieve something difficult, you probably haven't stretched your abilities far enough.

Failure to achieve a goal is alright – that is a fact of life. But, what is not a fact of life is to expect success without doing anything to attain it. They are as many excuses NOT to realize a dream. In fact, it is very easy to find an excuse for every excuse you can invent as to why you haven't or can't achieve that greatest dream. It always amazes me that people who have the greatest excuses for underachievement are the biggest complainers. On the other hand, the greatest achievers are the ones who are getting it done because they know that they are the ones who are responsible to make it happen.

Excuses are only for those people who are unwilling to find the solution, here's the plain and simple solution to not having or acquiring what you want. Find a solution to your excuses and you will eliminate any reason not to get more, have more, or be more. You don't have to dream about a dream any longer – do it now with a vengeance burying any excuses once and for all.

With Love

[vinnomot] Why? Engineers and Policy makers should immediately look into this

Why? Engineers and Policy makers should immediately look into this
We have to distinguish those who ask a patient to start running a 100 metre sprint from those who motivate a patient to start jogging to prepare for a 100 metre sprint

There could be many explanations behind this - what is described in the following news item shown below at the end of the message. It is reporting that REB is planning to ban the use of any irrigation pump which are not at least 3 hoursepower capacity. But many farmers own pumps which are 1 to 1.5 HP capacity.

Isn't this news item weird? What could be the justification of REB of doing this?

While its good the reporter is reporting this incidence early on, which could be an act of policy-sabotage, at an important time when government and farmers of Bangladesh is preparing to work hard to get a good crop in the upcoming boro season. We hope that all concerned would seriously look into this.

We also urge our journalist community to go deeper into the news, dont just be a describer or reporter, but also try to go behind and find out the facts. That way you will do an even better service to the nation.

If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please forward it to others. If you have an ear to the columinsts in regular traditional media, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.

Also, if you thought the article was important enough so it should come under attention of the head of the government or the head of anti-corruption commission, please forward the message to them.

Small farmers upset by Nilphamari REB decision
Pumps with less than 3 HP motors won't get power
Our Correspondent, Nilphamari

Hundreds of small farmers in the district are upset as Nilphamari Polli Bidyut Samity under Rural Electrification Board (REB) has made it mandatory to install at least 3 horsepower (HP) power pumps for irrigation during the current Irri-Boro season.

Usually, small farmers prefer 1 to 1.5 horsepower pumps for their small holdings. Such pumps consume less electricity and hence are less costly for them, some farmers told this correspondent.

Sources in the district Agriculture Extension Department (AED) said farmers, after the setback in Amon production due to flooding twice this year, now pin hopes on Irri-Boro to recover the losses. So the AED has targeted to bring 75,663 hectares under Irri-Boro in the current season, which is 3,000 hectares more than last year's area.

A major portion of lands are irrigated with small pumps using electricity from REB. A total of 5,016 power pumps and 82 deep tubewells are operated in the district during the dry season, AED sources said.

This year, farmers have applied for power connection to more 1,600 pumps, the sources said.

REB inspectors inspected most of the sights and recommended power connection. Farmers also deposited Tk 3000 as security many and Tk 2000 as wiring fee for each small irrigation pump.

But after visit by officials of the REB engineering department, farmers were told that power connection would not be given to pumps using motors less 3 HP. Pumps having 1 or 2 horsepower will not get power connection, they were told.

Ali Ahmed, a small farmer at Titpara village in Dinda upazila, said he uses a pump with 1.5 HP motor. "I do not need a bigger pump for my lands", he said.

Some farmers said they did not face such a situation in getting power for irrigation earlier.

The price of a 1-1.5 HP pump is Tk 6,500 to Tk 7,500 and that of 3 HP motor is Tk 13,000 to Tk 14,000, farmers said.

The farmer said the REB created the problem at a time when they were preparing to go for winter cropping.

When contacted, assistant general manage of the Polli Bidyut Samity Md. Moinuddin said it is mandatory to use at least 3 HP motors in power pumps as per REB irrigation policy.

"We are following REB instructions," he added.

[vinnomot] Creative Leadership- DR.APJ ABDUL KALAM

Visionary Leaders make the nation Great
I am delighted to be with you all at the Bhopal School of Social Sciences and discuss with you on creative leadership. My greetings to the Management Students hailing from different places of the country, teachers and other distinguished guests. I have been visiting all the states and union territories of the country, many nations and have come across several innovative leaders and organizations. It is remarkable how the initiatives of individuals and organizations are touching human lives and contributing to the national development. I would like to discuss how the political, scientific, technological and industrial leaders have touched the human lives by their creative leadership.
Mahatma Gandhi - the Great Political Leadership

I recall my traveling on 16th September 2004 in a train powered by steam engine in a first class compartment of 1900's vintage organized by Durban state of South Africa. When the train was moving from one station to another, Mahatma Gandhi's struggle against apartheid system in South Africa was going through my mind. The train halted at Pietermartizburg, the station where the monster of apartheid bite Gandhiji on a cold winter night. He was evicted out of a first class compartment because of the color of his skin. When I alighted at the Pietermartizburg railway station, I saw a plaque in the railway station, which reads like this:
In the Vicinity of this plaque
M.K. GANDHI was evicted
from a first class
compartment on the night of
7 June 1893.
This incident changed
the course of his life.
He took up the fight
against racial oppression.
His active non-violence
started from that date.
This was the rebirth of Ahimsa Dharma after the Kalinga War in 300 B.C. Gandhiji later developed the Ahimsa Dharma and gave India a powerful tool to win independence.
Indian Space Science Visionary

India`s great visionary in space science and space technologies Prof. Vikram Sarabhai, who was my Guru. Very rarely, in the journey of life we are influenced by great human beings. I was fortunate to work with Prof. Vikram Sarabhai for seven years. While working closely with him, I saw the dawn of the vision for the space program in a one page statement. Witnessing the evolution of this one page by many years of ceaseless work by a cosmic ray physicist, was really a great learning for me. Also I was thrilled to see the famous vision statement of Prof Vikram Sarabhai made in the year 1970 which states "India with her mighty scientific knowledge and power house of young, should build her own huge rocket systems (satellite launch vehicles) and also build her own communication, remote sensing and meteorological spacecraft and launch from her own soil to enrich the life of Indian citizens through satellite communication, remote sensing and meteorology."

When I look back at this vision statement now, I am overwhelmed to see the results of this statement. Today, India has built up the capability with its mighty facilities and powerful human resource to build any type of space craft and satellite launch vehicle and launch it from Indian soil. ICT has made tremendous contribution towards the high performance onboard computers and advanced embedded software systems in the Indian launch vehicles and spacecraft programs. Through space technology and space science, India can be a partner in the world space program to enrich the planet earth and further exploration.

Failure Management

Two and a half decades ago, while I was working at ISRO, I had the best of education, which won`t come from any university. I will narrate that incident. I was given a task by Prof. Satish Dhawan the then Chairman, ISRO to develop the first satellite launch vehicle SLV-3, to put ROHINI Satellite in orbit. This was one of the largest high technology space program undertaken in 1973. The whole space technology community, men and women, were geared up for this task. Thousands of scientists, engineers and technicians worked resulting in the realization of the first SLV-3 launch on 10th August 1979. SLV-3 took off in the early hours and the first stage worked beautifully. But the mission could not achieve its objectives, as the control system in 2nd stage malfunctioned. There was a press conference at Sriharikota, after the event. Prof. Dhawan took me to the press conference. And there he announced that he takes responsibility for not achieving the mission, even though I was the project director and the mission director. When we launched SLV-3 on 18th July 1980, successfully injecting the Rohini Satellite in to the orbit, again there was a press conference and Prof. Dhawan put me in the front to share the success story with the press. This success generated great happiness among all my team members.

What we learn from this event is that the leader gives the credit for success to those who worked for it, and leader absorbs and owns the responsibility for the failure. This is the unique trait of creative leadership.
The space community in India has the fortune to work with such leaders, which has resulted in many accomplishments. This management style is an important message for all the scientific, technological, industrial and even political leaders.

Science Leadership - Sir CV Raman - Value of Science

When I am in the midst of students of management and teachers and scholars, I thought of sharing with you an incident about Sir CV Raman "
a Nobel Laureate in Physics for discovering Raman Effect. Raman was in the first batch of Bharat Ratna Award winners. The award ceremony was to take place in the last week of January, soon after the Republic Day celebrations of 1954. The then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad wrote to Raman inviting him to be the personal guest in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, when Raman came to Delhi for the award ceremony. Sir CV Raman wrote a polite letter, regretting his inability to go. Raman had a noble reason for his inability to attend the investiture ceremony. He explained to the President that he was guiding a Ph.D. student and that thesis was positively due by the last day of January. The student was valiantly trying to wrap it all up and Raman felt, he had to be by the side of the research student, see that the thesis was finished, sign the thesis as the guide and then have it submitted. Here was a scientist who gave up the pomp of a glittering ceremony associated with the highest honor, because he felt that his duty required him to be by the side of the student. It is this unique trait of giving value to science that builds science. This is one experience, how leadership can be given for the growth of science.

Leadership in Industry

When I am addressing this gathering, a unique letter comes to my mind. This letter I saw in Jamshedpur at Tata Exhibition written by Jamshetji N Tata on 23rd Nov 1898. I would like all of you to know about this letter, which I am going to read. It gives a very important message. I quote:

"Dear Swami Vivekananda ,

I trust, you remember me as a fellow-traveler on your voyage from Japan to Chicago. I very much recall at this moment your views on the growth of the ascetic spirit in India, and the duty, not of destroying, but of diverting it into useful channels.
I recall these ideas in connection with my scheme of Research Institute of Science for India, of which you have doubtless heard or read. It seems to me that no better use can be made of the ascetic spirit than the establishment of monasteries or residential halls for men dominated by this spirit, where they should live with ordinary decency, and devote their lives to the cultivation of sciences - natural and humanistic. I am of opinion that, if such a crusade in favor of an asceticism of this kind were undertaken by a competent leader, it would greatly help asceticism, science, and the good name of our common country; and I know not who would make a more fitting general of such a campaign than Vivekananda. Do you think you would care to apply yourself to the mission of galvanizing into life our traditions in this respect? Perhaps you had better begin with a fiery pamphlet rousing our people in this matter. I should cheerfully defray all the expenses of publication.
23rd November 1898
Jamsetji N Tata
N Tata has written this letter to Swami Vivekananda asking him to take the leadership of a Research Institute for Science in India. Imagine the type of courage and vision a progressive industrialist Jamsetji had to write to a spiritual leader. This strength he derived from one important incident, which took place during a voyage from Japan to USA.

At this point let me share the meeting between Swami Vivekananda and Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata during a ship journey. It happened in 1893. A ship was sailing from Japan to USA. There were hundreds of people in that ship including two significant personalities. Swami Vivekananda and Jamsetji Tata were in that ship. Swamiji asked Jamsetji for what mission he was traveling. Jamsetji said that he wanted to bring steel industry to India. Swami Vivekananda blessed him. He suggested steel technology had two components one is steel science and the other is manufacturing technology. What can you bring to this country in material technology you will have to build material science within the country. Jamsetji was thinking and thinking and made a decision. Earlier when Jamsetji went to London he asked for technology transfer for Steel Plant. UK steel manufacturers looked at Jamsetji and said that if Indians make steel, Britishers will eat it. Jamsetji crossed the Atlantic Ocean, talked to Americans and brought manufacturing technology for steel. And the Tata Steel was established in Jamshedpur. He seeded and worked for the steel plant. Jamsetji is not there now, but 7 million tones per annum steel is rolling out. The visionary Jamsetji gave one portion of his asset for starting a science institute today known as Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore. The message I would like to convey to this audience, dream gives vision, vision gives thoughts and thoughts lead to actions. Jamsetji brought two establishments to this country  first one was steel plant and the other was an educational research institution based on the vision of Swami Vivekananda.

Now you will realize the significance of the letter from Jamsetji to Swami Vivekananda. A visionary like Jamsetji with the blessing of Swamiji paved the way for the establishment of Indian Institute of Science in 1909. The Indian Institute of Science born out of a vision of great minds is the foremost scientific research institution providing post graduate education in the country today. This institute will be celebrating its centenary celebration very soon. This institution as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda dreamt, has one of the best material science labs, providing the best of research results for development and production of material for various R&D labs and industries. Also Indian Institute of Science is a world class institution carryout research in various areas such as physics, aerospace technology, knowledge products, bio-science and bio-technology. This is one institution where research in convergence of technology like bio-technology, information technology and nano-technology has been given strong thrust. The results will have tremendous influence in improving the solar cell efficiency and drug delivery systems for healthcare. IISc is also a partner in Space, Defence, aeronautics and bio-technology missions. You can see how the vision of Jamsetji TATA and Swami Vivekananda has enable creation and nurturing of a great research and teaching institute.

Management leadership for the billions
The Indian management professionals coming out of various reputed institutions including yours have become internationally famous. They serve many Indian and multinational corporate houses. The question however is whether that is adequate for realizing the goals of India 2020? Can MBAs coming out of Bhopal School of Social Sciences and other institutions provide managerial leadership for the billion people of India? I am sure all of you will agree with me, that Indian mission can be achieved only by the synergy and team work of private sector, public sector, state and central governments, NGOs and all the citizens. How can creative leadership be generated to address the needs of all the segments of the society?
In this context, let me describe my visualization of the distinctive profile of India by 2020.
Distinctive Profile of India by 2020
1. A Nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced to a thin line.

2. A Nation where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water.

3. A Nation where agriculture, industry and service sector work together in symphony.

4. A Nation where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination.

5. A Nation, which is the best destination for the most talented scholars,
scientists, and investors.

6. A Nation where the best of health care is available to all.

7. A Nation where the governance is responsive, transparent and corruption free.

8. A Nation where poverty has been totally eradicated, illiteracy removed and crimes against women and children are absent and none in the society feels alienated.

9. A Nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, devoid of terrorism, peaceful and happy and continues with a sustainable growth path.

10. A Nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

Integrated Action for developed India

To achieve the distinctive profile of India, we have the mission of transforming India into a developed nation. We have identified five areas where India has a core competence for integrated action:

(1) Agriculture and food processing

(2) Reliable and Quality Electric power, Surface transport and Infrastructure for all parts of the country.

(3) Education and Healthcare

(4) Information and Communication Technology

(5) Self-reliance in critical technologies.

These five areas are closely inter-related and if progressed in a coordinated way, will lead to food, economic and national security. The major mission is the development of infrastructure for bringing rural prosperity are through Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) through creation of three connectivities namely physical, electronic, knowledge leading to economic connectivity. The number of PURA for the whole country is estimated to be 7000. Educational institutions can participate in evolving road map for development of PURAs in their region.

I have come across such example: in Periyar PURA at Vallam in Tamil Nadu, where students and teachers of Periyar Maniammai College of Engineering and Technology are working in the planning and development of a cluster of sixty five villages involving one lakh population. I am happy that the members of Bhopal School of Social Sciences is working on rural development program in Sohan Kheda a tribal village, Fatehpur and Sehatganj through educational and sanitation support. I would suggest that the 1500 members of the college can be deployed in project work for developing a full fledged PURA covering a cluster of 30 to 40 villages with a population of one lakh on the model of Periyar PURA. They should have an objective of realizing valued added employment for all employable people leading to doubling the per capita income of the villagers in three years time, realizing 100% literacy, Pakka houses for every family with sanitation facility, clean drinking water for all and affordable quality healthcare for all.

In order to achieve the goals of Vision 2020 from the present ambiance, we need a measurement tool, which can guide us in our inclusive growth path. This can be done by a comprehensive measure called National Prosperity Index which I would like to discuss.

National Prosperity Index

While we are happy that our economy is in the ascent phase and our GDP is growing at nearly 9% per annum, it is evident that economic growth is not fully reflected in the quality of life of a large number of people, particularly in rural areas and even in urban areas. Hence, we have evolved what is called a National Prosperity Index (NPI) which is a summation of (a) Annual growth rate of GDP; plus (b) improvement in quality of life of the people, particularly those living below the poverty line plus (c) the adoption of a value system derived from our civilizational heritage in every walk of life which is unique to India. That is NPI=a+b+c. Particularly,
"b is a function of availability of housing, good water, nutrition, proper sanitation, quality education, quality healthcare and employment potential. c is a function of promoting the joint family system, creation of a spirit of working together, leading a righteous way of life, removing social inequities, and above all promoting a conflict free, harmonious society. This will be indicated by peace in families and communities, reduction in corruption index, reduction in court cases, elimination of violence against children and women and communal tensions. There should also be progressive reduction in the number of people living below the poverty line leading to its becoming near zero by 2020. All our efforts in improving the national economic performance should be guided by the measured National Prosperity Index of the nation at any point of time.

Conclusion
Now, I would like to discuss with you the linkage between national economic development and creative leadership:

* A nation's Economic development is powered by competitiveness.
* Competitiveness is powered by knowledge power.
* Knowledge power is powered by Technology and innovation.
* Technology and innovation is powered by resource investment.
* Resource investment is powered by revenue and return on Investment.
* Revenue is powered by Volume and repeat sales through customer loyalty.
* Customer loyalty is powered by Quality and value of products.
* Quality and value of products is powered by Employee Productivity and innovation.
* Employee Productivity is powered by Employee Loyalty, employee satisfaction and working environment.
* Working Environment is powered by management stewardship and sound project management.
* Management stewardship is powered by Creative leadership.

For success in all your missions you have to become creative leaders. Creative leadership means exercising the vision to change the traditional role from the commander to the coach, manager to mentor, from director to delegator and from one who demands respect to one who facilitates self-respect. For a prosperous and developed India, the important thrust will be on the generation of a number of creative leaders from our educational institution. I am sure the Bhopal School of Social Sciences will generate many creative leaders who will make an impact in the process of development in Madhya Pradesh and the country.

My best wishes to all the Students and Faculty Members of Bhopal School of Social Sciences and different management institutions assembled here success in their mission of promoting creative managerial leadership required for realization of the goals of Vision 2020.

May God bless you

[vinnomot] Bangladesh maybe in square one again

Dear All,

I like to analyze what the present situation in Bangladesh and what we can expect in the next 18 months.  Most of the people in Bangladesh had high hopes for CTG when they took the power after 1/11/2007.  Maybe still there are good number of people support CTG activities.  But CTG had made serious mistakes in last 11 months which has make them no point of return.  Let me explain what went wrong in CTG:

1) Old proverb saying that never take more than you can afford.  CTG has taken good initiative Jihad against corruption where more than 99% people in Bangladesh are corrupted.  I know few people have provided me the examples that few others countries had been removed corruption from their countries using same strategies.

I am not trying to take credit here.  I have asked multiple times through media and personnel letters to CTG to initiate reconciliation initiative during corruption drive on July 2007 in Bangladesh.  My proposal was based on three things:

A) To be successfully in anti-corruption drive ,  you will need help from local people.  You just can not annoyed all your people who were suppose to be with you during anti-corruption drive.

B) Bangladesh has more 30% underground economy and the whole economy will not survive if you do top to bottom anti-corruption drive.

C)  Provide extensive justice to the top 100 corrupted people in Bangladesh and give the rest of the people an amnesty and make clear that if they are found to be corrupt in future at least 10 years jail time if they are found guilty again.

2) All the reshuffle of the advisers in CTG and failed to check the essential price made CTG more weaker than ever,  maybe CTG is losing public support even though they have good intention for the country.

3) A group people are thinking, CTG might hold the power longer than Dec 2008.  This might be not true anymore since they have failed in many major issues, though they have done so much good except the above items.  So what will happen to CTG? They will give up power and new elected Govt will be in power by Jan 2009.

4) The worst thing will happen when new Govt will take power in 2009,  they will let go all the corrupted Tigers more jails and those corrupted Tigers will roam in the streets in Bangladesh.  Their roaming will prove that no body can keep them in jails even they are most corrupted and looted the country.  One of the way this can be stopped if only honest people can be elected in the next election which I am very doubt because CTG is weaker than ever.  You will find that most the convicted person did not appeal for their verdict because when new Govt comes power in the next year, they will re-appeal their verdict and they might be given amnesty by saying miss trial about their cases.

So the bottom line,  by making many mistakes in the beginning, CTG might have made bigger trouble for Bangladesh than ever.  I wish I am wrong but my gut feeling is saying these prediction.  I wish CTG success but probability is very slim unless a miracle happens in Bangladesh.

Please do not take this prediction as granted.

Muharram 1, 1429, January 10, 2008   # 2
[There were 99 issues in 2007.]

From the Editor:
New Trend wishes its Muslim readers the best for the new Islamic year. Remember, the Islamic Hijri calendar begins with one of the central symbols of Islam, the hijra of the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, from Makka to Madinah. Instead of accepting subjugation and suppression by the oppressors, he migrated and started the model Islamic community in Madinah. This month contains great symbolism for Muslims, including the destruction of the power of the Pharaoh, the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, r.a., [the grandson of the Prophet, pbuh] and the martyrdom of Umar al-Khattab, r.a., the greatest Caliph in Islamic history.
Thus the month beckons Muslims to be disciplined, self-sacrificing, ready to give up everything to gain Allah's acceptance and to be SURE that the overthrow of the Pharaoh is inevitable.

Our America: What a Beautiful Match: Obama vs. Hillary: Race vs. Gender. These People are Geniuses!
Don't be fooled by the Hype, says Imam Jamil Abdullah al-Amin
by Kaukab Siddique

It was almost like a football match [or basketball] as the numbers crunched on the TV screens on January 8. Who would win? Obama [who was 10 points ahead on January 7] or Hillary?
These are beautiful people in some ways. America's power structure has found a creative new way of getting people to vote. Two of the most important issues in American life, Race and Gender have been invoked.
Obama is described as "messianic," brimming with enthusiasm and hope. It's so wonderful to see a Black man aspiring to go right to the top. Wasn't it Dr. Martin Luther King's vision from the top of the mountain that a man should be judged by the quality of his character rather than by the color of his skin.
And then look at Hillary! Who would not admire a woman who is so brainy, so self-respecting, so eloquent. Then she is feminine too! The tears she was going to shed as Obama moved ahead made women [and many men] cry. Isn't she wonderful!
On the other side, we have McCain, a Republican who wants war even in his old age. At least he can claim to be a warrior and not just someone who wants to send others to war. He wants America to be victorious in Iraq and then withdraw. The Republicans like that kind of unattainable dream. He even claims, he'll get Osama!
Before Muslims get swept away by the hype, ponder the words of Imam Jamil, a man, a leader, a man of God,  who knows America and follows the Sunnah of Muhammad, pbuh. In a message from prison he said that the people in power use these games of "elections" to release the frustration, the anger, of the masses. The election machine places a vision of better things to come, to distract the people from reality, says the Imam.
Look at what happened in America: The entire intelligence and surveillance system was breached by 19 men who inflicted terrible losses on America's most prestigious economic and military symbols. NO ONE RESIGNED from the Bush administration. NOT ONE PERSON was punished for neglect. Instead America decided to destroy the entire countries of Afghanistan and Iraq in retaliation. Israeli Jews rejoiced and slaughtered several thousand Palestinian children without evoking even ONE WORD of sympathy from America.
Now the Democrats want to use the hurt sentiments of the people to come to power, though they, working as they are for Israel, have already given EVERYTHING Bush wants, and more, to continue the war in Iraq, and if necessary to invade Iran and/or Pakistan.
Obama and Hillary say they will close down Gitmo? When? They have not even taken the trouble to visit the hell hole. [The Republicans think Gitmo is some kind of hotel, too good to be given to the "Moslems."]
Listen to Obama and Hillary carefully. They have swallowed the Zionist story about Darfur. For them, genocide is not taking place in Somalia, Iraq or Afghanistan but in Darfur.
Imam Jamil said it all when he said: It is not about Iraq or Afghanistan. It's about the global victory of Islam which these artists want to stop. [He was speaking about the entire power structure, not just about these two.]
[Sometimes I wonder how ISNA's "Shaikh" al-Alwani, Muzammil, and CAIR et al can live with themselves. Just like Bush refused to think of resigning after the 19 got through his intelligence network, and the Democrats refused to impeach him in spite of his fake crusade in Iraq, these "government Muslims" refuse to resign even after having advocated a bloc vote for Bush. How alike are they in their munafiqat.]

"Must Watch" Movie for Understanding America: The Great Debaters starring Denzel Washington
Jamaat al-Muslimeen urges Americans, particularly immigrant Muslims, to watch The Great Debaters. It is a salutary lesson on the roots of racism in America. As Dr. Abdulalim Shabazz has taught again and again, no one can understand America without understanding the racist past and present of this great country. How did the people of African descent deal with this hydra headed monster? The movie is very educational in this matter.
U.S. Muslims have been led far astray by bootlicker, lick spittle groups like ISNA and CAIR. There is no future for Muslims unless they realize that struggle and sacrifice will be essential. The African people brought here as slaves were often of Islamic background. Their struggle is our struggle. We should consider them as potential Muslims and learn the basic lessons.
[Please scroll way down for a review of the Great Debaters by New Trend reader Dr. Marvin X from California.]

100 Books Campaign: Select 12 Books and read One a month
Jamaat al-Muslimeen's National Shoora is urging its supporters to read ONE book each month. The purpose is to equip the developing Islamic movement in America with essential awareness of the issues facing Muslims in particular and oppressed people in general.
Reading the entire Qur'an with translation plus reading all of Sahih Bukhari with translation once a year is REQUIRED for every one of our supporters [in addition to the reading of the Qur'an in Ramadan].
Sis. Karen English, Secretary General, has started off the list of 100 books and inshallah it will be complete within a week.
Br. Aziz has offered to buy all the books and to lend them to interested readers who either cannot afford them or are too busy to buy them.
The choice is very wide as one has to read only 12 books out of 100.
Br. Kaukab suggests that the first book, especially for immigrants, after the Qur'an and Bukhari's Sahih, should be The Autobiography of Malcolm X. This is an easy read but should be required for immigrants who think they have come to paradise. [Email New Trend if you have already read this one and want our next choice.]
If you think a book should be placed on our reading list, please send us the relevant info.

U.S. Jamaat leader reports: Prisoners in Georgia file Suit against Extreme mistreatment

Jamaat al-Muslimeen Shoora leader Br. Sulaiman Solano is asking Islamic activists in Georgia to contact the Valdosta State  prison system and protest the extremely oppressive situation in Georgia's prisons. Br. Solano cites this excerpt from Associated Press:

"January 8, 2008: A group of prisoners filed a class-action lawsuit  contending that Georgia corrections officers have systematically beaten restrained inmates in prisons throughout the state, leaving two dead and dozens of others injured.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Valdosta, names 25 guards and other corrections officials as culprits in routine beatings and torture of restrained inmates. It also claims they subsequently covered up the abuses by inflicting even more beatings on prisoners who file complaints.
Seven Valdosta State Prison inmates claim in court documents that members of the prison's response team kicked them with combat boots, choked them with night sticks and donned black leather "beating gloves" to carry out the attacks between October 2005 and August 2007.
The lawsuit also mentions the cases of more than 40 inmates in other Georgia prisons who claim, among other abuses, that guards strapped inmates to iron beds and left them without food or water for as long as two days and banned beating victims from seeing family members or being photographed."

The Murder of Ahmad by the IDF in Hebron
Daily Life of Kawther Salam

August 1, 2007

On July 3, 2007, soldiers of IDF Brigade Commander Yehuda Fuchs murdered the 14-year-old child Ahmad Mohsen Al-Skafi in Hebron. After I called the family last weekend to ask them about the incident, I was shocked not only because of what the family told me, but also by the complete decline in the level of professionalism among the journalists in the area of conflict. The measures of the IDF to restrict the work of Palestinian journalists hinder them in fulfilling their important mission in the Palestinian cities.

The Politics of an Israeli Bag Lady
Jan 6th, 2008 by kawther.salam

In the videos below, you will see and hear, from the mouth of one of the illegal Jewish colonists in the West Bank, what amounts to the political views of all these individuals, of most Jews in Israel, and of a strong majority of the Jews worldwide. The old woman who speaks in these videos is Miriam Levinger, she is the wife of criminal, terrorist and murderer Moshe Levinger, one of the ideological pillars of the occupation of Palestine.

Understanding Pakistan
Debacle of Secularism: 5 to 15% of Pakistanis rule and play in western hands
by Kaukab Siddique, Ph.D
Associate Professor of English and Mass Communication

Pakistani secularism grew over a period of 60 years in recognizable enclaves all over the country. The Pakistani middle class is the vanguard of national secularism. These are people who are nominally Muslims and in fact would be outraged if their loyalty to Islam were challenged. They consider Islam part of their cultural heritage which is related to symbolic activities at funerals, births, Eid celebrations and random charitable activities.
The defining feature of Pakistani secularism is that secularists place religion at the service of their needs and wishes and thus evade the entire issue of obedience to the Will of Allah and the dominance of Islamic guidance in matters national, economic and international. Here are the major categories of secularists in Pakistan:
  • Upper echelons of the Pakistani military, from majors, colonels and generals to the chiefs of staff and commanders-in-chief.
  • The adult children of the military elite and their friends and relatives.
  • Feudal lords, such as the Bhutto family, the Bugti family, and their adult children and relatives
  • Big landlords and major industrialists and their adult children and relatives. Many of these appear to be religious [such as Nawaz Sharif]: their conservatism is often taken for Islam by their tenants.
  • The adult children, relatives and friends in these categories are the most important link between Pakistan and the U.S., U.K., and western Europe. They are focused on physically moving to the U.S. In the interim, while they await opportunities abroad, they surround themselves with or create around themselves replicas of Euro-American social environments.
  • The class loyalties and racist attitudes of these groups are reinforced by their contacts with Euro-Americans. They treat poor and black people with contempt.
  • Communists/socialists, "progressives," "liberals." Though very small in numbers, these elements are often effective against Islam because they are critical of western capitalism but equate Islam with feudalism
After 9.11 these groups were most susceptible to American-Israeli foreign policy initiatives. America-Israel saw Islam as the adversary and decided to destroy the havens of "terrorism" which are rooted in Islam. The Bush administration expressed the perception of the entire American power structure that unless Islam is defanged and declawed in its heartlands, opposition to U.S.-Israeli global domination would be impossible to overcome .
Through a steady process of demonization, the U.S. has arrived at the following view of the Muslim world [Pakistan and Afghanistan in particular]:
  • Those who practice Islam on a daily basis are "fundamentalists" and will become opponents of America sooner or later.
  • Those who condemn the American way of life and agitate and protest against it are "extremists" and will soon become a problem for the U.S.
  • Those who pick up weapons and fight American occupation forces, Israel and other and pro-American forces are "terrorists" and should be killed.
  • The madressas and mosques are the hotbeds of "fundamentalism," "extremism," and "terrorism."
  • The hijab or complete covering of the Muslim woman is the greatest obstacle to the domination of American-Israeli culture globally.
The secularist-Pakistani view of Islam is almost EXACTLY the same as that of the American power structure. Hence it was natural for Pakistani secularists to side with America against their own people especially at a time when Islam is resurgent and the "mulla" reminds the secularists that they are violating the teachings of Islam while claiming to be Muslims. Montreal Perspectives

Aqsa Pervez' Murder Probably owing to Family's Culture Shock was used by Media to Attack Islam

Jalaluddin S. Hussain

Happy New Year!

I wish the readers of New Trend a happy New Year, 2008.  I also sincerely apologize for my long absence from New Trend.  Now that I am back I will try to keep my readers  briefed  on the feelings, fear and aspirations of the Muslim communities living in Montreal, Quebec and Canada. The views expressed in this column will be my own but I will still invite my readers to express their frank opinion whenever they feel like disagreeing with me.

Violence must be condemned

Although, the Aqsa Parvez tragedy occurred in Toronto, in the second week of December, 2008, where Muhammad Parvez, a cab-driver, is reported to have killed her 16-year old daughter, in cold blood, because of her alleged abandoning of hijab, the incident was used all over Canada for Muslim-bashing.  Some racist souls in Montreal's electronic and print media fully exploited this painful incident and tried to give the impression that it was solely because of the hijab.

Since The Gazette's editorial, dated December 13, 2007, entitled "Murder does not reflect Muslim values", there were letters addressed to The Gazette, like the one from one, Serge Zimmer. He wrote:  "This young girl (meaning Aqsa Parvez) was guilty of only one sin:  she wanted to live as most Canadian young girls do.  Let's honour her memory and let's see how the Muslim community reacts."  Contrary to what Serge Zimmer wrongly nurtured, the Muslim communities of Montreal and in fact of the whole of Canada, reacted maturely.  Thoughtful people like Shahina Siddiqui, the President of Islamic Social Services (ISS) condemned the cruel attack on young Aqsa and said that there should be zero-tolerance for violence of any kind against women or girls. It is gratifying to note that the Canadian Muslim groups generally condemned the violence against Aqsa Parvez.

I personally feel that Aqsa Parvez's death, though highly tragic, was not because of hijab only but also because of severe culture shock that all the Parvez family members were undergoing, before her alleged strangulation.  This tragic incident needed greater understanding on the part of the Muslim and other non-Muslim communities.  It has been correctly suggested that those responsible for Aqsa's alleged attempted murder should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  Other Muslims, who may find themselves in similar situations, should seek assistance from the many social programs and services of the governmental and non-governmental organizations, well before it becomes too explosive.

Political Will undemocratic

While around 200 members of Montreal's South Asian community gathered in the Park Extension area, north of the city, to condole the untimely death of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi, Pakistan and eulogized her as "a champion of justice, democracy and human dignity," the disturbing fact that she reportedly named her 19-year old son Bilawal and her husband as political co-heirs emerged.  It boggles one's mind that Benazir could write such an undemocratic will!

A Mystical Journey - a unique devotional experience

The Shia-Ismaili community of Montreal organized an  international performance on November 5, 2007, at the Theatre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts, in Montreal.  The event was organized as  part of the international golden Jubilee commemoration of Aga Khan's leadership of his community.  This international performance, "A Mystical Journey"- Sufi Music and other Expressions of Devotion, from the Muslim world, featured world-renowned artists from North Africa, Europe, the Middle East and South/Central Asia.

It should be mentioned that music and musicians have played a vital cultural role throughout the Muslim world, including the heyday of the Muslim cultural renaissance.  From Indonesia, through South and Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, music serves not only as means of entertainment, for the various Muslim communities, but also as a way of expressing devotion and reinforcing common values and traditions.  This Shia-Ismaili event, "A Mystical Journey", brought together artists from diverse Muslim traditions, speaking different languages and performing a range of acts, to play in harmony and demonstrating the strength, diversity and pluralism of the Muslim cultural traditions.

Marvin X Reviews The Great Debaters

The Mind of the Thoughtful African Defeats Racism: Books and Creative Ideas are the Weapons of the Oppressed

This is a coming of age film of the North American African Nation. It is about a people regaining their consciousness after decades of obscurity. This film puts them back properly in the time and space of history, for they present themselves as a civilized people, the children and the adults, thus making it a movie on the goodness of life and the power of consciousness to reveal the very best of a people, thus regaining their self respect before the world community. It shows the intelligence and leadership of American African youth--of  adult leadership and intelligence as well, including the radical activist tradition in North American African History.

Every North American African, every Pan African, can be proud that Oprah Winfrey and Denzel Washington produced this. Perhaps we have reached that moment in time when our people have no choice but to be their true selves, their best selves.

For the first time in a long time, we see the intellectual genius of a people during the turbulent  1930s. This should be a lesson to all North American Africans that we have a dignified liberation tradition to uphold, thus we cannot sink into the morass of today, but in the manner of this film, take a great leap forward into dignity, respect, and intelligent behavior.

As a people, we must be proud of the young performers in this drama. They have exhibited the very best in us as human beings, as African people. The children teach us and themselves in this movie. They teach us the worst in human consciousness with their remarks on a lynching.

They repeatedly show us the power of using the black mind for intellectual dexterity rather than barbarity and expressions of animal consciousness.

This film is in the genre of Akila and the Bee, except that it goes deeper socially, intellectually, historically and spiritually. While it reveals the utter racism and white supremacy of this nation, it also depicts the resistance and transcendence to this unique American evil, especially in the present era.

The music is excellent, the visuals as well, including the acting and dance, giving us a sense of the ritual life of our people during the 1930s. The young character Henry who became a debater after a riotous life is exemplary and a clear example to other wayward youth struggling to survive in the hoods of America. You can come up if you get up! Yes, it takes energy: the same energy it takes to stay down it takes to get up!

Denzel Washington must be given kudos for his role as Melvin Tolson, the great poet of our people. Denzel proves his acting ability in presenting Tolson as the intellectual/activist, a tradition often represented by the artists/activists of the 1960s. But in the character of poet Tolson, we see the roots of the Black Arts Movement artist/activism that would emerge in the 60s with Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Askia Toure,Larry Neal, Marvin X, Haki Madhubuti, Ed Bullins, June Jordan and others.  But this tradition had its origins in the Harlem Renaissance of the 20s, and the poets, writers, and artists of the 30s, 40s and 50s, from Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Sterling Brown, Gwen Brooks, Ralph Ellison and others.

Forest Whitaker as the senior James Farmer maintained a certain dignity early on that his character revealed late  in The Deacons, his character kept its self respect when confronted by white racists after he accidentally ran over their hog. This scene is a survival lesson for young black men. I tell young black men on the street and in the schools and colleges that they must pass the tone test when confronted by police: depending on their tone of voice, they can be killed, arrested or released.

But imagine, so-called Negroes having an intellectual debate, even a team of debaters with a coach who apprises them on the Willie Lynch syndrome, who tells them straight out white supremacy has them insane, thus confirming the sister who says it is not white supremacy but white lunacy; thus we are victims of an insanity far beyond the economic implications. I love James Baldwin's quote, "It's a wonder we haven't all gone stark raving mad," dealing with white supremacy for four hundred years. The Debaters is a hopeful sign that we can and shall overcome, that we can and shall regain our collective sanity..

Dr. Marvin X's recent book is HOW TO RECOVER FROM THE ADDICTION TO WHITE SUPREMACY, Black Bird Press, POB 1317, Paradise CA 95967 , $19.95.

"He's the new Malcolm X! Nobody's going to talk out loud about his book, but they'll hush hush about it. It's very straight and plain. They talked about the things I wrote in my book, but wait til you read Marvin's."
