[ALOCHONA] Re: Jamaat Honcho against AI involvement

Dear Ms. Farida Majid,

Thanks you very much for your effort in upholding secularism.
However, I feel that there are some strategic issues you need be more
cautious about, otherwise there is a possibility of being caught in
your own trap.

- When you try to prove someone liar then you must avoid lying or
making statements which can be proved as white lie.

- Please try not to expose your feeling of supremacy. People usually
do not like to hear from haughty ones.

- Please try to use reasoning and evidence to establish your views
instead of using only rhetoric. Your postings usually sound too
hollow.

- Please try to demonstrate tolerance and avoid venomous attitude.
Venom is very powerful. A very small portion of poison can kill a
man. However, people hate and fear poison. Please do not make
yourself a poisons snake.

I must admit that these problems are widespread among the seculars in
our country and are acting as the major factors for the waning
condition of secularism in Bangladesh. Although Bangladesh was born
as a secular state, secularism was thrown away within very short time
and no political party dared to include reestablishment of secularism
as one of the key principles of the constitution in their election
manifesto not because the people of Bangladesh are not secular,
rather it is because of persons like you who demonstrate their
intolerance, lack of respect towards people with different political
ideology, and extremist and venomous attitude in every opportunity
they get to speak.

[ALOCHONA] Chief Justice Ruhul Amin - A Jamaati ideolog?

The problem is so simple and single most - they can tolerate everything but not Islam. They say they are not against Islam but against Jamatis. But that is their cover up. Otherwise why it itches them when Chief Justice, being a Muslim, talks in favor of Islam or Islamic law, although everybody knows that he does not belong to Jamat? If you talk about marxism, leninism, freudism, capitalism, socialism, communism, secularism, ziaism, mujibism - you are a great progressive civic citizen and probably an intellectual no matter what really you are. However, if you speak of Islam, that is your religion, your way of life, your belief - you are truly a dumb, traitor, a fanatic, a fundamentalist and of course a jamati no matter who really you are. Regards. Wohid

Some Alockoks have developed the bad habit of speaking in the style of George W. Bush. As long as you are pro-Indian, anti-islam and so-called secular then you have the right to say any thing you like. You belong to progressive group; your thinking are of 21st century; you uphold human rights;, etc. But if you are a practicing Muslim in Bangladesh and say some thing about your belief then right way you will be branded by these Alochoks as "Jamati" although your family or you had no correction to Jamat at all. Beginning of character assissination. What kind of world are we living and what kind of democracy we are talking about?

That Hinduism doesn't take converts isn't quite true. Brahmins allocate
schedule caste status to the converts. For that reason Arnold Toynbee didn't
convert to Hinduism in spite of having appreciated it greatly.

[ALOCHONA] Re: [Dahuk]: Response to Farida Majid's Write-Ups on Shah Mohammad Hannan

Mr. Jahangir,

Are you sure about the authenticity & genuineness of your stated story related to Mr. SAH?

Ms. Farida Majid,

The major problem with we Bangladeshis is that neither
can we critique in a civil way nor can we take it in
stride. I always smack some kind of arrogance in our
criticism. One doing it generally sounds like the most
knowledgeable soul on the face of the earth. On the
contrary, the people on the receiving end are treated
as most frivolous living on this globe.

It becomes all the more exasperating when people
choose wayward, unprintable language to vent their
venom. Instead of giving it the shape of a debate,
it's turned into a bull fight with personal attacks.
The intent is to hurt, not to heal - is to divide, not
to unite.

Ms. Majid, it indeed hurts me to find that you are no
exception. Perhaps you will say neither am I. I will
not contest if you do. However, it indeed hurts me
when you accuse Mr. Shah Abdul Hannan, a respectable
former bureaucrat, of crimes he never committed. You
never present any facts or figures in favor of your
allegations since there is perhaps none. When someone
puts up something in support of Mr. Hannan, you attack
him nakedly for his inability to comprehend your
American English.

Well, I had a short encounter with Mr. Hannan back in
late 1982 (or early 1983?) when he was the Chairman of
NBR. I shipped a refrigerator from Singapore and as it
arrived I was having all sorts of problems in getting
it cleared through the Airport Customs Authority. To
make a long story short, after running the papers
through everyone at airport, they sent me to NBR
headquarters for the Chairman's signature.

As I entered his office, he was already off from his
chair to prepare for his midday prayer. I approached
him and said, "sir, I am sorry to bother you at this
time, but I had to come from the airport for your
signature on this paper to get my refrigerator
released". He signed it immediately and said in
response, "why should you be sorry, rather we should
be ashamed of our policy that makes you come here all
the way from the airport just for a signature." The
response indeed surprised me since it was unexpected
of a Bangladesh bureaucrat, most of whom are arrogant
and indifferent. His humility impressed me. I still
carefully preserve this rare experience in my memory.

I have little interest in party politics. But when I
talk about politics I do my best to restrict the
discussion on issues without attacking any political
party, much less any individual. Mr. Hannan and you
could be proponents of different political
philosophies, but there are ways of expressing them in
a civil way.

Ms. Majid, take no offense, I was forced to write this
note since Mr. Hannan is a good human being so far as
my knowledge goes. It therefore hurts me when someone
tries to demean or denigrate a respectable person like
him. One has every right to contest his political
views, but not in the way you are doing it. It's
rather belittling for the person who does it this way.

ASM Jahangir

Lakshmana was jailed for 50 days after he was accused of a cyber
crime (TOI Photo)
A Bangalore-based software engineer, Lakshmana Kailash K, who was
wrongly jailed for 50 days last year by the Pune police cyber cell,
has demanded Rs 20 crore in damages and slapped a legal notice on
telecom giant Bharti Airtel, principal secretary (Home) Maharashtra
government and assistant commissioner of police (financial & cyber
crime unit), Pune police.

Lakshmana had been falsely accused of an internet crime - posting
unseemly pictures of Chattrapati Shivaji on the web - and was
arrested based on the internet protocol address provided by his
internet service provider, Bharti. As it turned out, the IP address
was not his.

But by the time the police confirmed this and acted on it, he had
already spent 50 harrowing days at the Yerwada Jail with hardened
criminals, had tasted lathi beatings and was made to use one bowl to
both eat and for the toilet.

Lakshmana's nightmare, first reported in TOI on Nov 3, 2007, sparked
condemnation on the web with internet communities posting their
outrage. The techie's 10-page legal notice, a copy of which has been
sent to the NHRC, vents anger at the way in which the police and
judicial system made nonsense of his rights and highlights the
degrading conditions within the jail

[mukto-mona] Rhetoric and Diplomacy

If rhetoric is diplomacy than president George Bush is damn wrong. This is common with him to mix up American zeal for developing democracy with threat and hypocrisy. His total lack of intellectual capability is the only reason for this mess. His recent trip to the Middle East is a proof of it. The United States being the only super power can achieve many things to make its foreign policy a success by being responsible and wise in words and actions. President Bush is conducting a personal war in Iraq and spent billions of dollars to forward a personal agenda. His grudge against Saddam Hussein who could not be wiped out by his father is a proof of his very poor understanding of the contemporary global politics. This war also shows his unscrupulousness. After destroying and bleeding a nation to death on manufactured accusations if he claims success in his mission this is clear madness. Now he   is stirring up another tension with Iran. He is bent on starting another misadventure before leaving the presidency. He has not learnt anything from Iraq if he attacks Iran. This will not help his allies in the Middle East nor will it enhance the security of the United States. But like Iraq if he has another personal grudge against Iran remembering the hostage crisis during the Reagan era nobody can stop him from another possible misadventure. This gunboat diplomacy will not usher democracy for which I don't think he is very serious in the complex political climate of the region. There is no doubt that Iran is no match for the military might of the United States but in the event of a conflict Iran can play havoc in the entire region. The feeble but oil rich Gulf States will be in serious security and political trouble and the oil supply through the narrow Strait of Hormuz will be virtually stopped. The world will be chocked and a recession will follow which will destroy the already weak economy of many nations. The security of Israel is threatened further. A nuclear holocaust can't be ruled out. There is only one suggestion he can be given that he should use his sanity before doing anything insane.

Akbar Hussain

Chief Justice tells int'l seminar in city:
Corruption, terrorism can be curbed by Islamic legal framework

the contemporary Society' at BIAM Foundation auditorium
yesterday. NN photo

Staff Reporter

Chief Justice Md Ruhul Amin told an international seminar in Dhaka yesterday that the curses of corruption and terrorism that afflict societies can be effectively curbed through the application of Islamic legal framework.

Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day international seminar on Islamic Law and its application in the contemporary society" at the BIAM auditorium, the Chief Justice said, 'Contrary to what people may believe, Islamic legal system is the most dynamic in nature and its acceptability with changing time and place is guaranteed through the window of Ijtehaad.'

He said, as the divine law on earth Islamic law is the most comprehensive set of rules and regulations which is capable of dispensing justice. 'A very special characteristic of the Islamic law is that it is applicable in all times and to all societies regardless of their ethnicity, colour and creed.'

The seminar is being attended by scholars from Malaysia, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It has been jointly organised by the Islamic Law Research Centre and Legal Aid Bangladesh (ILRCLAB) and the Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought (BIIT).

Presided over by Shah Abdul Hannan, former secretary to the government, and president, BIIT, the inaugural function was also addressed by advocate Nazrul Islam, secretary general of ILRCLAB, Prof. Imtiaz Ghulam Ahmed of the University of Calcutta, India, Dr. Hashim Kamali of International Islamic University, Malaysia, Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Khan of Pakistan, Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Editor, The New Nation, Prof. Abu Bakar Rafiq, Pro-VC, International Islamic University, Chittagong and Prof. Abul Hasan Sadeq, VC, Asian University of Bangladesh.

The Chief Justice said that the relevance of Islamic law to our society in modern times has never diminished. 'Instead, I think it is more relevant today than ever before.' Referring to massive corruption in our society, he said although huge anti-corruption measures inhibited the extent of corruption temporarily, they have seldom been successful to change the very characters of the corrupt people.

Similarly, most of the anti-terrorism measures that have been taken to curb terrorism that has shaken the world, failed to bring about desirable results, or ironically, proved counter productive.

He said Islamic legal framework will be able to instill the necessary moral fabric in the minds of the corrupt ones so that they would feel an urge from within themselves not to get involved in corruption. 'Islam does not heal any problem with superficial and light approach, rather it enters deeper into it to understand its nature and cause and then uproot the evil from its source, he said.

The Chief Justice hoped that through the 2-day deliberations of the workshop a concrete understanding of Islamic law and its applicability in the contemporary society will develop. The event is well timed in the wake of increased corruption, terrorism and crimes around the globe in general and in our country in particular, he added.

Shah Abdul Hannan said that Islamic law research progressed a lot and some such laws have been enacted in various countries, though we cannot say that the legislation are perfect and there are no lacunae. The Ulema and politicians for the first time in history agreed on the principles of Islamic Constitution when in Pakistan they framed constitutions in 1956 and then in 1973.

He, however, pointed out that there is a lot of misunderstanding about the depth and vastness of Islamic law. There is hardly anything to change in ninety-eight per cent of the laws in Bangladesh (to make them Islamic) because they deal with procedure and punishment, if any, he said.

[mukto-mona] RE: [RHYTHM-GROUP] Fwd: Chief Justice Ruhul Amin - A Jamaati ideolog?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46044

I read his remarks on Islamic Law and he went to the extent imposing Islamic
Law for ALL- "regardless of ethnicity, caste and creed" quoted his words. As
an ordinary citizen practicing other religion (Hindu, I must say), how can I
[or others like me] trust Chief Justice (perhaps in-justice) Ruhul Amin for
equitable justice in Bangladesh?

I would like to know the Government's position on the remark. Can anyone
share government's action/inaction/remarks on this matter?

Regards,
Prodip

[ALOCHONA] Response to Farida Majid's Write-Ups on Shah Mohammad Hannan

[mukto-mona] Fwd: Chief Justice Ruhul Amin - A Jamaati ideolog?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46044

Given the fact that Bangladesh is a pluralistic multireligious country, Chief Justice Ruhul Amin, occupying the highest position in the judicial system of the country, could have acted more responsibly by doing the following:

1. Emphasize on the principle of "separation of church and the state" and recommend putting back the constitution in its original secular status. Recommend how the constitution could be made more appealing as a more effective tool in minimizing all kinds of social, economic, and political exploitation. He could have easily done this even by quoting from the Islamic scriptures that support constitutional equity among various religious and other groups in the country.

2. Quote from Islamic scriptures to suggest why terrorism in the name of Islam is not defensible.

[mukto-mona] Re: A Lost Archive of Ancient Manuscripts of the Koran resurfaces

The first Quran was a compiled and bound Book.

It was not wtitten on bones, leaves and tree bark as the Mullah's Hadiths claim, which serves their own nefarious ends only.
The Quran itself proves that it was written on parchments and it was written alongside with the revelations. Not later.  Refer to Surat 80 and Ayah13 to 16.quote;This book is being written and saved without any mistakes by the mostrespectedand honest writers in the society.; Refer to Surat 52 and Ayah 2 to3."Being written on spread out parchment. Refer to Surat 56 and Ayah 77 to 78 quote; This is a most holy and respectable Quran being saved in a book.It was also being memorized by people at that instant as well. Refer to Surat29 and Ayat 49. quote; These Ayah's are being saved by heart by the people whothey were sent to. The Quran itself calls it a book; it claims it was beingwritten as revealed as well as being memorized. There should be no morequestions or doubts regarding this matter any more.
One could quote many more Ayahs regarding this matter and further strengtheningwhat the Muslims claim but to the wise one slight sign and signal should beenough. What the Mullahs mention are mere lies and propaganda against Islam andthe Quran, not facts.

In the Quran Allah calls the Quran Zalikul Kitaba. Itshould end here as aperiod.  God calls it a book. A book is a volume of pages of a materialall brought together and bound with a cover. One cannot call some manuscript abook if some are words or sentences etc written on stones or leather pieces andare all separate, looseand not bound together. Will any of us call that jumbledup mess a book?? Only a Mullah/Immams will say Yes. [ They do this for thepurpose that they can then claim
that what they are preaching is from the Quran but the Ayah was misplaced. Theyinvented the Pandoras Box.
The Arabs had a brisk trade with Egypt and the southern parts of China andRussia as well. Papyrus a type of crude paper was well known to the Arabs.Papyrus was subject to deterioration in time so the message written on anypapyrus was transferred to parchments. This is expensive but far durable. Skinof animalse specially the deer or goat are very finally sliced. The Quran wasnever written on stones or leaves as some people may try to point out. TheQuran was a book and a bounded book. Then why do people say and lie that stonesor other scraps or bits of material were used for this purpose?
Illiterate Ullema who do this for money and power. A lot of Sahabas did memories it
as well, so non could change it.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Fwd: Chief Justice Ruhul Amin - A Jamaati ideolog?

Some Alockoks have developed the bad habit of speaking in the style of George W. Bush. As long as you are pro-Indian, anti-islam and so-called secular then you have the right to say any thing you like. You belong to progressive group; your thinking are of 21st century; you uphold human rights;, etc. But if you are a practicing Muslim in Bangladesh and say some thing about your belief then right way you will be branded by these Alochoks as "Jamati" although your family or you had no correction to Jamat at all. Beginning of character assissination. What kind of world are we living and what kind of democracy we are talking about?

Chief Justice tells int'l seminar in city:
Corruption, terrorism can be curbed by Islamic legal framework

International Seminar on 'Islamic Law and its application in
the contemporary Society' at BIAM Foundation auditorium
yesterday.

[mukto-mona] How Sangha Parivar describes Kandhamal Riot

Dear Friends,

Please find what RSS describes about the Kandhamal Riot. I am pasting two articles one by Ram Madhav is a former spokesperson for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and another by Simanchal Khatua, Pranta Prachar Pramukh, Orissa.

Local factors led to Kandhamal violence Ram Madhav January 08, 2008http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/jan/08guest.htm

For days, one TV Channel ran visuals of how Christians have been targeted for violence in Orissa's Kandhamal district. Several other so-called national channels too joined the chorus sufficient enough for Mombattiwalas (candlelight activists) to plunge into the ring and declare that 'entire Orissa', if not 'entire India', is in the grip of violence unleashed against 'innocent minorities' by 'Hindu nationalists'.

As a senior leader pointed out to me after a heated TV debate, we have created a funny nomenclature in our country: if you are a Hindu and defend your faith, you are a 'Hindu nationalist' a pejorative reminiscent of Nazi Nationalism.

But if you are a Hindu and use your lung power to loudly attack Hinduism and Hindus for crimes they never committed, then you are a great 'secularist'.

Both these stereotypes are a creation of our perverted political discourse. Thus every incident of the nature of the Kandhamal one will immediately be dragged into this Hindu Nationalist Secularist arena and the endless blame-game continues.

We don't realise that in the process we are not only destroying the image of our nation but actually perpetrating such violence by not looking dispassionately into the real reasons behind each and every single incident.

Violence in the name of religion in any form should be opposed by all. It is unfortunate that we had to end 2007 with one such violent situation in a district of Orissa. But we must not ignore the fact that Kandhamal is for that matter many such incidents have been a localised incident; not a phenomenon as the Candlelight-walas would want us to believe.

It is neither pan-Orissa nor pan-Indian. 'Many feel conversion is not the church's business'The trouble in Kandhamal started on December 23 when some Christians at Brahmanigoan village wanted to erect a Christmas gate in front of a Hindu place of worship.

This was resented by the local Hindus who questioned the motive of the Christians in insisting on building a second gate near a Hindu place of worship while one gate was already erected at a place where it is done every year on the eve of Christmas. This led to the initial clashes. Since Christians were more in number in the said village the Hindus were at the receiving end. As the news of clashes reached Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, a selfless Hindu seer working for the socio-economic development of the local people for over four decades -- he set out for Brahmanigoan on December 24. His car was attacked by a violent Christian mob in which the seer himself and two of his followers sustained serious injuries. Swamiji, 82 years old, has been relentlessly working for the uplift of the people in the district -- more than 75 per cent of whom are below the poverty line and illiterate -- since 1967. He has opened schools and hostels, hospitals and temples to serve mainly the tribals and the down-trodden.

It was this attack that led to further clashes in the district, as the seer is highly respected and has innumerable supporters in the district. Four days of clashes resulted in both sides suffering in various ways -- many houses were burnt, properties destroyed and physical attacks taking place.

What made things worse in Kandhamal was the open collaboration between the Christian groups and Naxals. Among those arrested in connection with the burning down of villages inhabited by Hindus (Brahmanigaon, Jhinjiriguda, Katingia, and Godapur) were 47 Maoists.

Some 20 guns have been recovered by the security forces from them. The Kandhamal violence is essentially a localised one, as many such incidents in the country have been. It is the local factors that play a predominant role. Animosities were brewing no doubt. But again the reasons were immediate. There has been a feud between the Kondh tribals and largely Christian Pana Scheduled Caste people. The Panas, under the leadership of the local Congress Rajya Sabha member Radhakanta Naik, who is said to be a convert, have been demanding inclusion of their caste in the Scheduled Tribe category as they too speak the same Kui language that the ST Kondhs speak. Christian group demands CBI probe into violenceThis argument was rejected by the state government as well as by the courts. But the agitation in favour of the demand continues under Naik's leadership, fuelling resentment among the Kondhs who remained largely unaffected by conversion activity of the Christian missionaries. However, if there is any one aspect that is pan-Indian in all the incidents related to Hindu-Christian clashes it is religious conversions. Even in Kandhamal district, one of the major factors fuelling tensions is the conversion campaign of the evangelical groups. It is noteworthy that in a state like Orissa which enacted anti-conversion laws as back as in 1967, the Christian population in Kandhamal district alone has grown from 6 per cent in 1970 to 27 per cent in 2001.

The 'aggression' shown by the new age evangelical groups mostly in predominantly tribal areas in states like Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gujarat etc has become a major contributor of religious strife. We can't overlook the fact that in the entire country Christmas was celebrated with a lot of gaiety with millions -- a lot of Hindus included -- thronging churches. Hindus, at the core of their belief, are 'omnitheists'.

For a Christian or a Muslim there is 'one god', but for a Hindu there is 'only god'. For him god is omnipresent, the entire creation is divine manifestation only. Religious conversion is an anti-thesis to this belief.

There was a time when at the end of the British Raj the mainstream missionaries in India had decided to focus more on humanitarian and developmental activity than conversions. Many still adhere to that concept, confining themselves to running schools, hospitals etc and serving humanity at the time of need. However, for the growing breed of 'aggressive' evangelicals, numbers are very important. 'Harvesting souls' is god's work for them. Means don't matter. In a very interesting article in Christian Science Monitor (April 1, 2005) Ajai Sahni, executive director of the Institute of Conflict Management in New Delhi and a renowned intellectual was quoted as saying: 'Aggressive and unprincipled missionary work that exploits the distress and ignorance of marginalised groups ... can constitute a catalyst to localised violence, particularly when they are brought into confrontation with other creeds'. External link: A new breed of missionaryThese 'aggressive' activities of their fellow pastors and fathers have aggrieved many Christian leaders too. This is what the Christian Science Monitor article says on those activities:After the tsunami, the US National Council of Churches issued a statement warning against the practice by "New Missionaries" of mixing evangelism and aid. "Often lacking sophistication about the lure of gifts and money, and wanting to be generous with their resources, they easily fall prey to the charge of using unethical means to evangelize.

This creates a backlash," the February statement read. "You get this guy out of Texas who has no idea of the local culture, he is out to win souls, and he comes with a lot of money," says Bob Alter, former Presbyterian pastor born and raised in the Indian mountain town of Mussoorie, and former superintendent of a missionary institution, the Woodstock School. The problem with these newer churches, Mr. Alter says, is the tone of their message. "You have Baptists using the Diwali festival [the Hindu festival of lights], but they come to 'spread the light to those in darkness.' That is mighty offensive stuff, when you're out to tear down another religion." It even quoted one Bishop Chacko, head of the Roman Catholic diocese in Meghnagar in Jhabua district in Madhya Pradesh who said, 'Even the older Protestant churches are unhappy with the evangelicals. It is said that they are irresponsible. Consequences don't matter to them. They put the fire and then they leave it to burn.' Whether it is Kandhamal in Orissa or Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh or Dangs in Gujarat, the only pan-Indian question is the evangelical activities of 'aggressive conversion campaign'. If we argue that conversion is a right, then re-conversion too is a right. In this melee of conversions and re-conversions violence and strife will become the order of the day.Let every religion enjoy complete religious freedom to preach, practice and propagate. But as our apex court categorically stated, 'Propagate' does not and should not include 'Conversion'. Let us put an end to the institutionalised activity of conversions by church agents and instead allow citizens freedom of personal choice without fear or favour.

Converted Christian's effort to grab ST status in Orissa's Kandhamal results in bloody clashes

Converted Christian's effort to grab ST status in Orissa's Kandhamal results in bloody clashes: Attack on Swami Laxmanananda aggravates the situation

Phulbani (Orissa): (visakeo)-Kandhamal district is once again in news. The district – which is very often proudly claimed as Orissa's Kashmir – witnessed clashes between two local communities – the tribal Kondh predominantly Hindus and Panas mostly converted to Christianity.

The Projection of the incident in Media

A section depicted it as communal clash and squarely blamed the Hindus for the three days of violence.

The clashes between the two groups which began on the Christmas eve, threw normal life out of gear at places like Brahmanigoan, Barkhama, Baliguda, Tikabali, Daringibadi, Phulbani and few other places and compelled the government to impose curfew at several towns in the district.

Many media, mostly the national and international, – without a reality check – went overdrive to paint a wrong picture about the entire sequence of events. Very few investigated the reasons of the violence put the blame squarely on the Hindus. Only burning of churches and prayer houses were reported, not the lethal attack on the Hindu seer Laxmananda Saraswati found due place in the newspapers. Nor the death of a Hindu – which was immediate provocation for the communal clash – was properly highlighted. Even Maoists joining hands with Christians in attacking tribals was ignored by the international and national media.

However the vernacular press predominantly reflected what actually happened on the ground and found Christians being the initiator of the latest hostility between the communities. The followers of Christ faith were in the forefront of attack and they attacked Hindu hamlets and attacked the police and even collaborated with Maoists in attacking the kondh tribals, they reported.

Starting of the trouble

The trouble started on the eve of the eve of Christsmas Day. On December 23, the converted Christians at Brahmanigoan wanted to erect a gate near the place of a Hindu deity to celebrate the Christmas. This was resented by the local Hindus. They asked the Christians why they were insisting to build the second gate near their place of worship when they had already erected one where they normally use to erect their Christmas gate. This led to heated exchange of words between members of the two communities. Two Hindu youths were severely beaten up and injured by the Christians.

As this news reached to Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, a selfless Hindu seer – working for the socio-economic development of the local people for over four decades, he set out for Brahmanigoan on December 24. While he was on his way, he was surrounded by the Christians and attacked with sharp weapons. The seer and two of his fellow travelers sustained serious injuries. With Swamiji's drivers prompt action and fleding away with vehicle, life of Swamiji was saved.

The news of attack on the seer and his disciples spread like a wildfire and shocked his innumerable supporters in the district. What followed was the emotional outburst of Swamiji's followers created over a period of four decade long service to the people, their development and religious awakening.

Both the sides indulged in clashes at several places – damaging life and property on both the sides. Strangely, many national and international media presented one-sided story, - they did not see how the Hindus were dragged out of their houses, beaten up and hacked to death. They only saw churches and listened what the Christian leaders spoke. The world was fed with wrong information.

The social issues that affects peace very often in Phulbani

The problem that has often led to clashes in the district – in reality – is more of social character than religious. The Kondh, native tribal community constitute the overwhelming majority of the district. Pans originally a Scheduled Caste group in majority have been converted to Christianity.

Kui – the mother tongue of the Kondhs is the principal language of the district. The sizable Christian Panas speak Kui, the tribal dialect.

Christian Panas have been demanding scheduled tribe (ST) status. They contend that since they speak Kui and their lifestyle and socio-economic conditions are similar with the Kondhs, they should be considered as scheduled tribe.

The Panas claim they received a shot in the arm when the J.B. Patnaik government in 1982 recommended the Centre to recognize the Kuis as STs. But Kui is a language and not the name of any tribe. The state government recommendation got the President's assent in 2002. But it may be clarified that Presidential proclamation talked of Kui to be included in ST category. The Govt. of Orissa refused ST status to Kui speaking converted people as the Record of Rights of that section of Kui speaking people are named as Panas belonging to Schedule Caste category.

Court has intervened

This was challenged by the Christian Panas in Orissa High Court. They filed a writ petition in the HC seeking passing of an order in favour of their demand.

The HC in its directive asked the state government to take appropriate decision in the light of Presidential proclamation. The legal battle went on and finally the Court asked the Govt. to take a decision.

The Govt  declines

However, the state government submitted that since the Record of Rights of the Panas  did not mention the Panas belonging to Tribe category, their demand for the said status could not be met. "This demand is not based on historical and anthropological facts", Orissa Government time and again has maintained.

The dropped steel and mines minister Padmanabh Behera, who belongs to Pana community –was apparently sympathetic the demand ST status to his fellow people. The Kondhs say Mr Behera was utilizing the state machinery to repress them when the opposed to the Pana's ST status demand. Going by demand of Kondhas for removal of Mr. Behera from the ministry, it was apparently Chief Minister Naven Patnaik wanted Mr. Behera to resign to buy peace from angry Kondhs of the district.

Rangnath Mishra commission recommendations adds fuel to the fire

Justice Ranganth Commission, that recommended facility of reservation to be extended to the converted dalit people, the ST and SC people are apprehensive of their rights being curtailed and grabed by converted people who at the present law not eligible to get reservation facility.

R. K. Naik, the villain

Behind the social tension, conflict, disorder and bloody battle there is hand of a former bureaucrat a native of Kandhamal district Mr. Radhakant Naik now a Congress MP. He patronized missionary activities and conversion alienating sizable section of the society from their culture and tradition.

It may be noted that Mr. Naik a converted Christian had got into Indian Administrative service in Scheduled Caste quota, which he is not entitled to as per Indian constitution.

Now close to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who generously made him member of Rajya Sabha from Orissa, alleged Swami Laxmananda as man behind attack on him on Christmas eve. Attack on Swamiji had taken place in the native village of Mr. Naik in Dasingibadi, considered as stronghold of Christian's activity.

Founder of Phulbani Kui Jankalyan Sangh, he leads the movement for arranging ST status for Christian Panas, the group to which he himself belongs.

VHP demands ban on conversion

A VHP delegation which included retired Judge of Orissa Hiogh Court Justice M. Papanna, educationist Dr. Ratnakar Chaini, VHP state President Bipin Bihari Ratha wanted the Chief Minister to ban on conversion as they opined it as the root of all problems in tribal regions of the state. Atleast they demanded strict implementation of Orissa Freedom of Religion Act (OFRA) – 1967 that prescribes stringent provisions for conversion from one religion to another.

While the VHP delegation welcomed Judicial commission set up to  enquire into the communal disturbances in Kandhamal wanted Z category security for Swami Laxmananda in view of threat on his life. It may be noted that Swamiji has been attacked 9 times so far lethally.

They also demanded setting up of a commission to scrutinize and enquire into flow of foreign funs to the Christian missionaries and their utilization.
