সুজনের গোলটেবিল বৈঠকের আড়ালে আওয়ামী লীগ নেতৃবৃন্দ জরুরি অবস্থার মধ্যেই নির্বাচনে ঝুঁকে পড়ার প্রচার প্রচারণা শুরু করেছেন। আগামী এপ্রিল- মে মাসে জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের তাগিদ দিয়েছেন নেতৃবৃন্দ। জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের আগে স্থানীয় সরকার নির্বাচন না করার এবং নির্বাচনী এলাকায় সীমানা নির্ধারণের জটিলতায় নির্বাচন কমিশনকে না জড়ানোর জন্য নেতৃবৃন্দ আহবান জানিয়েছেন।
গতকাল মঙ্গলবার সকালে জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাব ভিআইপি লাউঞ্জে সুজন আয়োজিত 'নির্বাচন কমিশন ঘোষিত রোডম্যাপ ও বাস্তবায়ন' শীর্ষক গোলটেবিল বৈঠকে আওয়ামী লীগের শীর্ষস্থানীয় নেতারা দ্রুত নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের পক্ষে অভিমত দিয়েছেন।

সুজন সভাপতি অধ্যাপক মোজাফফর আহমদের সঞ্চালনায় গোলটেবিল বৈঠকে অংশ নেন আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা সাবের হোসেন চৌধুরী, ড. আব্দুর রাজ্জাক, এডভোকেট রহমত আলী, কর্নেল (অব) ফারুক খান, 'সুজন'-এর সম্পাদক ড.
বদিউল আলম মজুমদার, তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের সাবেক উপদেষ্টা এম হাফিজ উদ্দিন খান ও এএসএম শাহজাহান, সাবেক মন্ত্রী সৈয়দ দিদার বখত ও শেখ শহিদুল ইসলাম, রাজনীতিবিদ হায়দার আকবর খান রনো, সাবেক রাষ্ট্রদূত ওয়ালিউর রহমান, জিএম কাদের, আসম আব্দুর রব, গণস্বাস্থ্য কেন্দ্রের নির্বাহী পরিচালক ডা. জাফরুল্লাহ চৌধুরী, কলামিস্ট সৈয়দ আবুল মকসুদ, এফআর আল সিদ্দিক, জাতীয় পার্টির অতিরিক্ত মহাসচিব সাদেক সিদ্দিকী, অধ্যক্ষ মাহফুজা খানম, ফেমার প্রেসিডেন্ট মুনিরা খান, নির্বাহী পরিচালক বোরহানউদ্দিন আহমেদ, ড. মেহের ই খোদা, ড. ফেরদৌসী বেগম প্রমুখ।

অধ্যাপক মোজাফফর আহমদ বলেন, রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর মৌলিক বিষয়ে ঐকমত্য আমাদের গণতন্ত্রের জন্য সহায়ক। আগামীতে সংসদ অকার্যকর থাকবে এই অবস্থা আমরা দেখতে চাই না।

ফারুক খান বলেন, নির্বাচন কমিশনের রোডম্যাপকে পর্যবেক্ষণ করছে আওয়ামী লীগ। তিনি বলেন, আমরা সবাই চাই দেশে একটা ভালো নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হোক। তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকার জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন আয়োজন করতে পারে, অন্য কোনো নির্বাচন নয়। হায়দার আকবর খান রনো বলেন, ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে নির্বাচন হলেই আমরা সন্তুষ্ট। ড. আব্দুর রাজ্জাক বলেন, নির্বাচন কমিশন রোডম্যাপ করার পূর্বে রাজনৈতিক দল বা কারো সঙ্গেই আলোচনা করেনি। এই রোডম্যাপে রাজনৈতিক দলের কোনো ধরনের দায়িত্বও সুস্পষ্ট করা হয়নি। তিনি প্রশাসনিক নিরপেক্ষতা সৃষ্টির ওপর বিশেষ গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে বলেন, আমরা সবাই দ্রুত সময়ের মধ্যে সুষ্ঠু, গ্রহণযোগ্য ও নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন চাই। আগামী এপ্রিল বা মে মাসের মধ্যেই নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠান করা প্রয়োজন বলে তিনি মত দেন।

জিএম কাদের বলেন, স্থানীয় সরকারের নির্বাচন রুটিন ওয়ার্ক। এটা জাতীয় নির্বাচনের পূর্বেই কাছাকাছি সময়ে করলেই ভালো হয়। শেখ শহিদুল ইসলাম ফিল্ড লেভেলের সংস্কারের ওপর বিশেষ জোর দিয়ে বলেন, গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে গেলে প্রয়োজন নির্বাচন। এদেশের জনগণ দুর্নীতিমুক্ত প্রশাসন ও গণতন্ত্র দুটোই চায়। আসম আব্দুর রব বলেন, জাতীয় স্বার্থে এখনই আমাদের জাতীয় ঐকমত্যে আসা জরুরি। দিদার বখ্ত রোডম্যাপ নিয়ে দ্বিধা প্রকাশ করে বলেন, এর বাস্তবায়ন করতে হলে সরকারের সঙ্গে রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর আলোচনার প্রয়োজন রয়েছে।
রহমত আলী জরুরি আইন প্রত্যাহার করার দাবি জানিয়ে বলেন, সংবিধান ও আইনের দিকে দৃষ্টি রেখে রোডম্যাপ বাস্তবায়ন করা হলেই তা সঠিক হবে। সাবের হোসেন চৌধুরী জরুরি অবস্থা প্রত্যাহার ও নির্বাচন কমিশনের স্বাধীনতার ওপর বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে বলেন, রোডম্যাপ অনুসারে বাকি যে সময় আছে সেটির উপযুক্ত বাস্তবায়ন নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। মুনিরা খান বলেন, ২০০৮ সালের ভেতরেই নির্বাচন হবে এমন কথা অনেকেই বলছেন। কিন্তু তারপরও দেশের মানুষের মনে একটা সন্দেহ বিরাজ করছে। সৈয়দ আবুল মকসুদ বলেন, গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার মালিক রাজনীতিবিদগণ। তিনি বলেন, রোডম্যাপ নয়-লক্ষ্য, উদ্দেশ্য ও কর্মের সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্য রেখে এগিয়ে যেতে হবে।

ড. জাফরুল্লাহ চৌধুরী বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদরাই বাংলাদেশকে শাসন করবে, অন্য কোনো ব্যবস্থায় নয়। তিনি বলেন, ২০০৮ সালের মধ্যে সংসদ নির্বাচন চাই। আগামী ৪/৫ মাসের মধ্যে সীমানা নির্ধারণের কাজ শেষ করা প্রয়োজন। বর্তমান অবস্থার বিশ্লেষণ করে তিনি বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদদের সত্যিকারের প্রতিশ্রুতি চাই, তাহলে জনগণ আপনাদের পাশে থাকবে এবং দেশ সত্যিকারের গণতন্ত্রের দিকে এগুবে।

Army Backed Govt: The LOSER

You already know, in the mean time, that Anwar sir was found innocent in
one case. The next day, in a similar charge, another judge found (or
forced to prove) him guilty! Ridiculous! It was very much expected that
the 2nd judgment would follow the first one. Unfortunately, it did not
happen!! People think that the whole drama was pre-arranged. Despite our
teachers declared before that they won't beg any apology for what they
have done, a 'mercy petition' was signed by the President immediately
after the verdict. It has been reported in today's news papers that the
'mercy application' was ready before the verdict was delivered. After
their 'Game' is over, they have withdrawn 10 cases against the students
and released the teachers immediately. So we now know what Govt was
waiting for!! They dared to undermine the honor of the teachers and
students. They were, indeed, committed to do so! They are apparently
winner (or semi-winner?)! But History will brand them LOSER one day!!
History repeats! Unfortunately "Hatu Bahini/Jalpai Bahini" will never
learn from it.

However, we feel proud to be a part of the campaign against the illegal
arrest and brutal torture by Army Junta on our teachers and students. The
DU teachers and students did a fantastic job by driving a peacefull
movement against the arresst of their teachers and students.

We are very glad that Anwar sir is back among us. We hope he will play a
vital role in building an 'educated nation' in the future. Our
expectation from him now is much more than anytime before!

Anwar Sir, we all are proud of you.

At the end, I must thank all of you, Mukto-mona editorial board, the
writers and the readers for your continuous support to help release of all
our beloved teachers and students from the army prison. I specially want

The list of Razakar and their salary records may still preserved under government but I strongly suggest unknowingly on primitive guess to harm anyone is out of civic approach.

 

Moreover the Daily Star whose financial root from cross border sources and engaged in a specific mission should be avoided from any intellectual support.

When Zahar Cried

Zahhar said that all Palestinians are ready to sacrifice their own life for liberating the Palestinian lands GAZA CITY — "We offer our sons for martyrdom not because we are stone-hearted fathers, but because Palestine is precious," a tearful Mahmoud Zahar said standing by the blooded body of his youngest son. Hossam Al-Zahar, 22, was one of 19 Palestinians killed by Israeli occupation forces Tuesday, January 15, in the neighborhood of Al-Zeitun in eastern Gaza City. A member of the resistance group Hamas military wing, he had joined fellow resistance fighters in trying to challenging the invading Israeli force. Zahar, a top Hamas leader and a former foreign minister, rushed to hospital after receiving the heartbreaking news. Reporters and cameramen were all set and ready for the emotionally charged moment. It was one of the few times, if not the only, that the tough-talking Hamas leader let go of his inner feelings. "God knows you are the apple of my eyes," the grieved father of four said as he bended over to kiss the forehead of his slain son. "Saying goodbye is breaking my heart but it is our destiny and destination," added Zahar, his voice quavering. Israeli forces stepped up its attacks in Gaza on Wednesday, January 16, killing three civilians, including a teenager, in the Gaza City. The victims -- a 13-year-old boy, his father and uncle – died after an Israeli missile slammed into their car. Israeli troops also shot dead an Islamic Jihad leader in the occupied West Bank town of Qabatiya near the city of Jenin. Wednesday's deaths bring to 6,074 the number of people killed since the outbreak of Al-Aqsa intifada in September 2000, the vast majority of them Palestinians. Martyrs Father Hossam is the second son Zahar has offered his just cause. Khaled, his elder son, was killed when an Israeli F-16 dropped half-ton of explosives on the family's home three years ago. He was discussing with his father the final preparations for his wedding when the Israeli enemy stole not only his dream but also his life. Zahar's wife and one of his two daughters were also wounded in the attack. The Hamas leader also lost his son-in-law in an Israeli attack last year. Born in 1945, Zahar is a co-founder of Hamas. He graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, and five years later he got his Masters Degree in General Surgery from Ain Shams University, Cairo. He has helped create the Palestinian Medical Society and was one of the primary founders of the Islamic University in Gaza in 1978. When Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, Zahar was named a foreign minister under Premier Ismail Haniyeh's government. "I promise all martyrs, including my two sons, that we would never give up our struggle to liberate Palestinian lands and Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem)," said a defiant Zahar. "We die so that Palestinian may live."

সুজনের গোলটেবিল বৈঠকের আড়ালে আওয়ামী লীগ নেতৃবৃন্দ জরুরি অবস্থার মধ্যেই নির্বাচনে ঝুঁকে পড়ার প্রচার প্রচারণা শুরু করেছেন। আগামী এপ্রিল- মে মাসে জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের তাগিদ দিয়েছেন নেতৃবৃন্দ। জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের আগে স্থানীয় সরকার নির্বাচন না করার এবং নির্বাচনী এলাকায় সীমানা নির্ধারণের জটিলতায় নির্বাচন কমিশনকে না জড়ানোর জন্য নেতৃবৃন্দ আহবান জানিয়েছেন।
গতকাল মঙ্গলবার সকালে জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাব ভিআইপি লাউঞ্জে সুজন আয়োজিত 'নির্বাচন কমিশন ঘোষিত রোডম্যাপ ও বাস্তবায়ন' শীর্ষক গোলটেবিল বৈঠকে আওয়ামী লীগের শীর্ষস্থানীয় নেতারা দ্রুত নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের পক্ষে অভিমত দিয়েছেন।

সুজন সভাপতি অধ্যাপক মোজাফফর আহমদের সঞ্চালনায় গোলটেবিল বৈঠকে অংশ নেন আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা সাবের হোসেন চৌধুরী, ড. আব্দুর রাজ্জাক, এডভোকেট রহমত আলী, কর্নেল (অব) ফারুক খান, 'সুজন'-এর সম্পাদক ড.

অধ্যাপক মোজাফফর আহমদ বলেন, রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর মৌলিক বিষয়ে ঐকমত্য আমাদের গণতন্ত্রের জন্য সহায়ক। আগামীতে সংসদ অকার্যকর থাকবে এই অবস্থা আমরা দেখতে চাই না।

ফারুক খান বলেন, নির্বাচন কমিশনের রোডম্যাপকে পর্যবেক্ষণ করছে আওয়ামী লীগ। তিনি বলেন, আমরা সবাই চাই দেশে একটা ভালো নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হোক। তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকার জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন আয়োজন করতে পারে, অন্য কোনো নির্বাচন নয়। হায়দার আকবর খান রনো বলেন, ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে নির্বাচন হলেই আমরা সন্তুষ্ট। ড. আব্দুর রাজ্জাক বলেন, নির্বাচন কমিশন রোডম্যাপ করার পূর্বে রাজনৈতিক দল বা কারো সঙ্গেই আলোচনা করেনি। এই রোডম্যাপে রাজনৈতিক দলের কোনো ধরনের দায়িত্বও সুস্পষ্ট করা হয়নি। তিনি প্রশাসনিক নিরপেক্ষতা সৃষ্টির ওপর বিশেষ গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে বলেন, আমরা সবাই দ্রুত সময়ের মধ্যে সুষ্ঠু, গ্রহণযোগ্য ও নিরপেক্ষ নির্বাচন চাই। আগামী এপ্রিল বা মে মাসের মধ্যেই নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠান করা প্রয়োজন বলে তিনি মত দেন।

জিএম কাদের বলেন, স্থানীয় সরকারের নির্বাচন রুটিন ওয়ার্ক। এটা জাতীয় নির্বাচনের পূর্বেই কাছাকাছি সময়ে করলেই ভালো হয়। শেখ শহিদুল ইসলাম ফিল্ড লেভেলের সংস্কারের ওপর বিশেষ জোর দিয়ে বলেন, গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে গেলে প্রয়োজন নির্বাচন। এদেশের জনগণ দুর্নীতিমুক্ত প্রশাসন ও গণতন্ত্র দুটোই চায়। আসম আব্দুর রব বলেন, জাতীয় স্বার্থে এখনই আমাদের জাতীয় ঐকমত্যে আসা জরুরি। দিদার বখ্ত রোডম্যাপ নিয়ে দ্বিধা প্রকাশ করে বলেন, এর বাস্তবায়ন করতে হলে সরকারের সঙ্গে রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর আলোচনার প্রয়োজন রয়েছে।
রহমত আলী জরুরি আইন প্রত্যাহার করার দাবি জানিয়ে বলেন, সংবিধান ও আইনের দিকে দৃষ্টি রেখে রোডম্যাপ বাস্তবায়ন করা হলেই তা সঠিক হবে। সাবের হোসেন চৌধুরী জরুরি অবস্থা প্রত্যাহার ও নির্বাচন কমিশনের স্বাধীনতার ওপর বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে বলেন, রোডম্যাপ অনুসারে বাকি যে সময় আছে সেটির উপযুক্ত বাস্তবায়ন নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। মুনিরা খান বলেন, ২০০৮ সালের ভেতরেই নির্বাচন হবে এমন কথা অনেকেই বলছেন। কিন্তু তারপরও দেশের মানুষের মনে একটা সন্দেহ বিরাজ করছে। সৈয়দ আবুল মকসুদ বলেন, গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার মালিক রাজনীতিবিদগণ। তিনি বলেন, রোডম্যাপ নয়-লক্ষ্য, উদ্দেশ্য ও কর্মের সঙ্গে সামঞ্জস্য রেখে এগিয়ে যেতে হবে।

ড. জাফরুল্লাহ চৌধুরী বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদরাই বাংলাদেশকে শাসন করবে, অন্য কোনো ব্যবস্থায় নয়। তিনি বলেন, ২০০৮ সালের মধ্যে সংসদ নির্বাচন চাই। আগামী ৪/৫ মাসের মধ্যে সীমানা নির্ধারণের কাজ শেষ করা প্রয়োজন। বর্তমান অবস্থার বিশ্লেষণ করে তিনি বলেন, রাজনীতিবিদদের সত্যিকারের প্রতিশ্রুতি চাই, তাহলে জনগণ আপনাদের পাশে থাকবে এবং দেশ সত্যিকারের গণতন্ত্রের দিকে এগুবে।

An Asian century?

The great historian Eric Hobsbawm described the 20th century as the century of extremes. Burgeoning industrialisation, scientific breakthroughs in the fight against disease and the concomitant rising rates of human survival and economic growth, the end of colonial domination, and the spread of democracy were some of the outstanding achievements of that period. On the other hand, during the same period some of the bloodiest conflicts in history broke out, among them the two world wars, which killed millions of people. Also, despite enormous economic growth and end of colonialism, poverty and poverty-related forms of human degradation continued to afflict the wretched of the earth, most of whom were found in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The 20th century epitomised the leadership of the West. That leadership had become a fact of history from at least the beginning of the 19th century, when European powers completed their expansion into Asia and Africa, reached its zenith at the beginning of the 20th century. But then the empires received severe blows as a result of wars among them, as well as from the freedom and liberation struggles in the colonies. These days one hears quite so often that the 21st century is going to be an Asian century. Such optimism is justified because after several centuries Asian societies are exuding great dynamism and progress. East Asia, South-East Asia, China and now India are emerging as engines of economic growth. Will this contagion also affect the mainly Muslim-majority countries of west and central Asia? But, more importantly, will an Asian 21st century, characterised by economic growth and rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, be very different from the 20th century if it only replicates what was done in the last century? How will the 21st century not be a century of extremes, or perhaps of stark contrasts between the successful and the failed; the haves and the have-nots; the powerful and the weak? In other words, will it not be a continuation of the Western century but with some Asian trappings?   Some people have been talking about Asian values as distinctly different from Western values. In a nutshell the difference is supposed to be between the individualistic ethos of the West and communitarian approach to life in Asia. It is only with urbanisation and overall improvement in standards of living that individualism became a central norm in Western society. So, communitarian solidarity is not only an Asian characteristic. One can even argue that individualism is not bad at all, as long as it means that society accepts the rights of each person to make his or her choices freely. It does not mean that individuals cease to think in terms of their family and friends. On the other hand, community pressures can be very stultifying and oppressive. It is therefore important that the individual does enjoy autonomy. I think the main strength of Asian societies has been their ability to handle cultural, religious and ethnic pluralism more successfully than Western societies. Pluralism in West Europe dates only from the end of the Second World War, while in the United States and Canada, as far as non-Europeans are concerned, it started only in the 1950s and in Australia and New Zealand in the 1970s. In eastern and central Europe the communist regimes restricted the mobility of people strictly, with the result that they were ethnically homogeneous and minorities were suppressed. Consequently, after the fall of the communist regimes, but especially when they opened up for tourism and to join the EU, racist movements quickly appeared. On the other hand, Asian civilisations were largely pluralist. The dhimmi system created space for Christians and Jews to live among Muslims, though not as equals. Moreover, the development of Sufi thought and brotherhoods mellowed down the harsh side of monotheistic belief. God was conceived more as an object of love than of fear. In South Asia the various sects of Hinduism provided scope for diversity notwithstanding the tyranny of the caste system. The fact that millions of gods and goddesses were worshipped, besides the main Hindu pantheon, encouraged great plurality of local beliefs and practices. Buddhism and Jainism provided outlets for further diversity, and with the arrival of Islam and Christianity, and indeed the birth of Sikhism, there was greater cultural heterogeneity. The Chinese civilisation developed its own peculiar type of pluralism. While Confucianism prescribed a civic code of ethics and was patronised by the state, popular religion in the form of Taoism and Buddhism created a possibility for greater cultural variation. South-East Asian nations such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore have always been multicultural. Islam, brought to this region by Arab sailors and merchants, did not erase their Hindu-Buddhist traditions altogether, and therefore South-East Asia managed cultural and ethnic diversity more successfully. Japan was the most ethnically homogeneous society in Asia, and one wonders if that explains why it was attracted to fascism more than any other nation in Asia. The main danger to Asian pluralism is the rise of religious fundamentalism in many parts of this vast continent. Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist fundamentalisms negate pluralism and are therefore the contemporary protagonists of fascist ideas.
