I have always supported the Democratic Ticket in all presidential elections held in America. When I first came to America in 1969, 'Tricky Dick' (Richard M. Nixon) was the president who took office in late January 1969. Nixon, a Republican politician who served as the vice president for President Dwight D. Eisenhower for 8 years, was at the helm. He promised during the campaign all throughout 1968 that he would pull out troops from Vietnam once he becomes the president. This is the promise that he reneged. His evil counsel, Henry Kissinger, engineered the proliferation of Vietnam War to neighboring countries such as Laos and Cambodia. In 1972, the Democrats put forth the candidacy of Senator George McGovern, a liberal candidate, who promised to end the war in Vietnam. However, he was soundly defeated by Richard Nixon. But Nixon paid very dearly for bugging the Watergate Complex office of McGovern's election headquarters.

I never liked even one Republican candidate who ran for the White House. The first time I was allowed to vote in presidential election, it was 1984 when Ronald Reagan was reelected; this time the Democrat had nominated Vice President Walter Mondale, a descent man. But Reagan was immensely popular then for whatever reasons not quite understood by me. Reagan's 8 years in office resulted in huge budget deficit. He promised to make the federal government a small one but ended up making it a big one.

America had the choice to elect another descent human being, Governor Michael Dukakis, in 1988 but the nation elected George H.W. Bush instead. Dukakis was a victim of vile campaign attack. George W. Bush knew how to scare people and he did that with negative campaign. Bush's 4 years in office was uneventful and was plagued with savings and loan scandal. In 1992 Americans elected Bill Clinton. Thanks to the Third party candidate, Russ Perot, who stole enough votes from Bush to help Bill Clinton win the election.

In 2000, George W. Bush received the nomination from Republican Party and ran against Vice President Al Gore. Even though Gore received more popular votes, he lost the election to Bush. Thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court that did not allow the recounting of votes in Florida.

George W. Bush's presidency is mired in Iraq War, a misadventure totally based on false intelligence gathering. The Islamic terrorists did a favor to Mr. Bush in 2001 when they hijacked four passenger airlines and rammed two of them against the World Trade Center killing nearly 3000 innocent civilians. Mr. Bush took the opportunity to send troops to Afghanistan and Iraq. The rest is history. Bush who inherited a healthy economy with budget surplus transformed the nation's economy into a sick one. With gas price escalating and economy shrinking, the nation plunged into a recession in late 2007. As of this writing, the Federal Reserve cut down the interest rate three times to revive the anemic economy. No one is certain how severe the recession would be and when the economy would turn around. Under this dire backdrop the two parties, Democratic and Republican, are selecting their candidate. I will not address the Republican race in this article. Let me stay focus with the Democratic Party's choice for the candidate who very probably will run in November against Senator John McCain who looks like would become the torchbearer of the Grand Ol' Party.

Senator Obama is a freshman legislator from Illinois who gave a fiery speech in the summer of 2004 at the Democratic Convention when Senator John Kerry became the party's candidate to run against George W. Bush. Barack Obama was elected as the senator from Illinois in the same year. Later he was sworn in 2005. He quickly established himself to be an effective legislator while learning the inner workings of Washington.

Barack Obama decided to run for the office of U.S. President two years after he became the senator. However, the field was very crowded as Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, senator from New York and ex-First lady, Senator John Edwards, Governor Bill Richardson, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich all vying for the grand prize, i.e. to receive the party's nomination. Once the primaries get going the field was narrowed down to two candidates. Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama were competing against each other for the party's nomination. Both the candidates have received millions of dollars as donations. On Super Tuesday, February 5, 2008, democrats living in 20 states will vote in the primaries and the polling results will give us an idea who might get the party's nomination in the summer of 2008 when the delegates will convene to choose their candidate.

Earlier polls have indicated that Senator Hillary Clinton was leading Obama by single digit percentage points but a day before the Super Tuesday the race was tightening. Indications are that Obama may win in few populous states and so will Senator Hillary Clinton.

Senator Obama received the head start when he won the contest in Iowa but he came up second in New Hampshire next to Senator Clinton. But in South Carolina Senator Clinton was soundly defeated in late January 2008. President Bill Clinton and his daughter Chelsea campaigned extensively in South Carolina, which has many African American electorates. Unfortunately, President Bill Clinton injected racism into the campaign and for that he was reprimanded by many senior Democrats, and civil rights leaders. On Martin Luther King holiday the Clintons made some controversial comments telling the Americans that it was President Johnson who was instrumental in enacting the civil rights laws. The contributions of the slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, in mobilizing the public opinion for changing the laws were underplayed by the Clintons. This unfortunate development greatly displeased many liberal Americans. Suddenly, we witnessed that racism was brought into the primaries by Clinton camp. In my humble opinion this unfortunate development coupled with president Bill Clinton's unbridled remarks in South Carolina have cost Senator Clinton some votes. Soon she realized that a mistake was made.

On January 31, 2008 both Obama and Clinton participated in a very civil debate where they complimented each other and refrained from making barbed comments against one another. However, Senator Obama boldly made the assertion that while Senator Clinton went along with Bush's decision to invade Iraq, he opposed the decision. Clearly, Obama wanted to establish himself as the anti-war candidate.

Senator Obama's campaign speech had energized many Americans especially the young college kids when he portrayed him as the agent of change that America needs so desperately. Many people saw the reflection in him of President John F. Kennedy while others saw reflection of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Senator Obama is a gifted orator, undoubtedly. His message is getting through to the electorates. Many people consequently opened their purse. One thing Obama campaign does not lack is money. It is the testament that many Americans liked his views on myriad topics such as healthcare reform, doing away with the evil influence of corporations in politics, a drastic change in foreign policy including bringing back troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Americans who aspire to see a change in their nation is supporting Senator Obama. They say that Senator Clinton represents old politics, which include the influence of special interest. It will be interesting to see if Obama's candidacy catches fire. One thing is for sure. President Kennedy's daughter, Caroline Kennedy, her cousin, Maria Shriver, and the slain president's youngest brother, Senator Edward Kennedy all had thrown their weights behind Senator Obama. This is unprecedented and the like of which have never seen before. This has made the Clintons very unhappy. But life goes on as usual. Soon we will know whether Obama will become that dream candidate who will have the support of the majority electorates. Therefore, stay tuned.

I ask all who believes in freedom of expression to send their demand to caretaker government to free prisoner of conscious cartoonist Arifur Rahman immediately without any further delay. Government is going to frame case against jailed cartoonist on February 25^th 2008 based on blue print mastered by corrupt ex Adviser Moinul Hosein anti Islam religious traders Jamaat-e-Islami. We hope caretaker government will not give the religious bigots any platform and withdraw their case and free Arif.

 

The entire nation knows young cartoonist Arifur Rahman draw a simple cartoon from his creative inquisitive mind not to malice religion but just the opposite. He wanted to express his view that how out substandard religious trader's uses great religion Islam as pretext to ill influence creating a realm of religion to control.

 

We have seen these religious bigots attacked religious minority in our country anytime they can. Calling anyone Kafir even to Muslims and placing a head price is a common observable fact in so-called religious bigots meetings that take place in the north gate of Baitul Mukarrom mosque. This the place where its started from a stick holding stone throwing KAT Mullah's meeting where they called cartoonist Arif a murtad an enemy of Islam and wanted him to be hanged. So-called Barrister fallen Moinul Hosein one of the most corrupt Adviser the Bangladesh ever saw fanned the situation with the help of his political wing Jamaat-e-Islami leader then head imam of Baitul Mukarrom.

 

Caved in state law enforcement agencies arrested daily Prothom Alo cartoonist Arifur Rahman accusing his cartoon "hurting religious sentiments".

 

Evidently, mullahs in the poorest of the poorest country have more frightening influence over uneducated religious population and government then birthplace of Islam Mecca of Saudi Arab.

 

What an outrageous malicious steering of such a simple mater by mullahs and more contemptible action by Bangladesh government. What was there in the cartoon in Aalpin a Prothom Alo production? Gian Papi Barrister Moinul called it inflammatory and act of conspiratory plot to destabilize the calmness of the country and put country on fire! Really? Is there was something of that height of damaging nature in this cartoon? Let us examine one more time what was there in this text-based cartoon titled Naam (name) based on conversation between an elderly and a kid on its September of 2007 issue.

 

Elder person: Boy, what is your name?

Kid: My name is Babu.

Elder person: It is customary to mention Mohammed before the name.

 

Elder person: What is your father's name?

Kid: Mohammed Abu

 

Elder person: What is this in your lap?

Kid: Mohammed cat

 

To me it is a mere satire of our naming culture, which follows not religion in its essence but a false perception of religion. I see no sign of disgracing Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) or Islam through this cartoon called NAAM (name).

 

Islam and its prophets teachings have been violated many folds more in the hands of these mullahs in Bangladesh and elsewhere who is protesting this cartoon. You do not have to go far but read any daily news from Bangladesh and you will get how the sermon of these mullahs in the name of Fatwa destroyed so many innocent families. It is not cartoon or books, which brings bad name for Islam and its Prophet but the illiterate mullahs who defame our religion.

 

It is sometime ago, November of 1998 Kishor Kontho a monthly magazine of Islami Chatra Shibir printed a very similar joke. No one of these Islamic sole agents at that time or now demanded that author of that joke or the editor of the magazine should be brought to justice and magazine license should be revoked. Readers of that joke took it as mere fun with the spirit of the section titled "Hashir Baksho".

Islam and its prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) are not so fragile that a mere cartoon or few lines of text can damage its serenity. I rather see it was Barrister Moinul, powerful adviser of the government who played the role of The Pied Piper of Hamelin tuning his pipe to bring the worst out of ordinary. Moinul and probably the entire government wanted to divert the nation eyes on some less important matter to accomplish their hidden big agenda of the time.

 

Addressing Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haq Amini, IOJ Vice President Maulana Muhammad Mahiuddin, and Secretary General Mufti Faizullah Bar Moinul Hosein said, "There is a conspiracy to create a dangerous and unwanted situation," Mainul said, adding, "Everyone has to remain united against the conspiracy to destabilize the country."

 

Despicable Bar Moinul the Bottolar ukil, this dishonest man with hidden agenda since his assumption of power as adviser until his rock bottom fall is making his every effort to divide the nation. Getting the mighty backing of the owner of tanks and gun is making him thinking invincible, not understanding his days will be over.

 

I like to take this opportunity to condemn Prothom Alo editor and publisher for not standing beside Arifur Rahman the young cartoonist and providing him with a lawyer to defend him. I ask all journalists of Prothom Alo and others to raise their voice against all injustice and attempt to divert a simple matter into a conspiratorial one.

 

I demand government free Mr. Arifur Rahman immediately and take proactive role rather then fanning the issue and fire Bar Moinul who is trying to destabilize the country.

Despicable Bar Moinul the Bottolar ukil, this dishonest man with hidden agenda since his assumption of power as adviser until his rock bottom fall is making his every effort to divide the nation. Getting the mighty backing of the owner of tanks and gun is making him thinking invincible, not understanding his days will be over.

 

I like to take this opportunity to condemn Prothom Alo editor and publisher for not standing beside Arifur Rahman the young cartoonist and providing him with a lawyer to defend him. I ask all journalists of Prothom Alo and others to raise their voice against all injustice and attempt to divert a simple matter into a conspiratorial one.

 

I demand government free Mr. Arifur Rahman immediately and take proactive role rather then fanning the issue and fire Bar Moinul who is trying to destabilize the country.

		Mullah's double standard Shamim Chowdhury Published on September 20, 2007   It is sometime ago, November of 1998 Kishor Kontho a monthly magazine of Islami Chatra Shibir printed a very similar joke. No one of these Islamic sole agents at that time or now demanded that keeper of that joke or the editor of the magazine should be brought to justice and magazine license should be revoked. Readers of that joke took it as mere fun with the spirit of the section titled " Hashir Baksho".   একই অপরাধে পার পেয়ে গেছে জামাতি প্রকাশনা কিশোরকণ্ঠ কাগজ প্রতিবেদক : দৈনিক প্রথম আলোর রম্য সাময়িকী আলপিনে মহানবী হযরত মুহম্মদকে (সাঃ) অবমাননা করে কার্টুন ও কৌতুক কাহিনী ছেপে যে অপরাধ করা হয়েছে জামাতে ইসলামীর কিশোর প্রকাশনা 'কিশোরকণ্ঠ'ও কার্টুন ও একই রকম কৌতুক ছেপে একই ধরনের অপরাধ করেছিল। একই অপরাধে প্রথম আলোর সংশ্লিষ্ট প্রদায়ক কার্টুনিস্টকে গ্রেপ্তার, আলপিনের সংশ্লিষ্ট সংখ্যা বাজেয়াপ্ত করা দায়িত্বপ্রাপ্ত সাংবাদিককে চাকরিচ্যুত করা ও ঐ কার্টুন কাহিনী প্রত্যাহার করে নিয়ে পত্রিকাটির পক্ষ থেকে ক্ষমা চাওয়া হয়েছে। অথচ একই ধরনের অপরাধ করার পরেও কিশোরকণ্ঠ ও এর সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্টদের বির"দ্ধে কোনো ধরনের ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়নি। এমনকি পত্রিকা কর্তৃপক্ষও পরে কোনো ধরনের ক্ষমা বা ভুলের প্রার্থনা বা ভুলের কথা স্বীকার করে তা প্রত্যাহার করে নেয়নি। প্রসঙ্গত, স্বাধীনতাবিরোধী মৌলবাদী দল জামাতে ইসলামীর ছাত্র সংগঠন ইসলামী ছাত্রশিবিরের মাসিক কিশোর প্রকাশনা কিশোরকণ্ঠের ১৯৯৮ সালের নভেম্বর সংখ্যায় মুহম্মদ (সাঃ)-এর নামের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে একটি কার্টুন ও সম্প্রতি প্রথম আলোর আলপিনে প্রকাশিত কৌতুকটির অনুরূপ কৌতুক ছাপা হলেও প্রকাশনাটি ও এর সঙ্গে জড়িত শিবির নেতাদের বির"দ্ধে কোনো ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়নি। এমনকি আলেম সমাজ বা ইসলামি কোনো দলও এর প্রতিবাদ করেনি। অথচ সম্প্রতি প্রথম আলোর রম্য ম্যাগাজিন আলপিনে ভুলবশত ও অনিচ্ছাকৃতভাবে একটি অগ্রহণযোগ্য ও অমনোনীত কার্টুন কাহিনী হযরত মুহম্মদ (সাঃ)-এর নামের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে ছাপায় পত্রিকাটির পক্ষ থেকে ক্ষমা চাওয়া, কার্টুন কাহিনী প্রত্যাহার করা এবং সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে আলপিনের ঐ সংখ্যা বাজেয়াপ্ত করা, কার্টুনিস্টকে গ্রেপ্তার ও সংশ্লিষ্ট একজনকে চাকরিচ্যুত করার পরেও জামাতসহ কিছু উগ্র ইসলামি মৌলবাদী দল এই নিয়ে রাজনীতি করতে চাচ্ছে। এর নেপথ্যে জামাত কলকাঠি নাড়লেও তাদের প্রকাশনায় যখন মুহম্মদকে (সাঃ) অবমাননা করে আলপিনের মতো কার্টুন ও কৌতুক ছাপা হয়েছিল তখন তারা নীরব ছিল। কিশোরকণ্ঠ ঐ কৌতুক কাহিনী বা ঐ সংখ্যাটি বাজেয়াপ্ত বা প্রত্যাহার বা কারো বির"দ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নিয়েছিল এমন কোনো নজির পাওয়া যায়নি। কোনো সরকারি ব্যবস্থা বা প্রতিবাদ-বিক্ষোভের কথাও জানা যায়নি। কিশোরকণ্ঠের ১৯৯৮ সালের নভেম্বর সংখ্যায় 'হাসির বাকসো' বিভাগে মুহম্মদ (সাঃ)-এর নাম নিয়ে যে ব্যঙ্গাত্মক কার্টুনের সঙ্গে যে কৌতুকটি ছাপা হয়েছিল সেটি পাঠিয়েছিলেন ফেনীর আমিরাবাদ এম এম ইস সি মাদ্রাসার ছাত্র মুহাম্মদ মাসুদ। কিশোরকণ্ঠের সম্পাদকমণ্ডলীর সভাপতি মোঃ শফিকুল ইসলাম মাসুদ, উপদেষ্টা সম্পাদক মোশাররফ হোসেন খান, সম্পাদক মতিউর রহমান আকন্দ, ব্যবস্থাপনা সম্পাদক মুহম্মদ জাহিদুর রহমান, নির্বাহী সম্পাদক মুহম্মদ রেজাউল করিম এবং অলংকরণ ও শিল্প নির্দেশক হামিদুল ইসলাম। এর মধ্যে সম্পাদকমণ্ডলীর সভাপতি শফিকুল ইসলাম মাসুদ এবং ব্যবস্থাপনা সম্পাদক মুহাম্মদ জাহিদুর রহমান যথাক্রমে ছাত্রশিবিরের কেন্দ্রীয় কমিটির সভাপতি ও সাধারণ সম্পাদক। প্রকাশনার সঙ্গে জড়িত অন্যরাও জামাত ও শিবিরের বিভিন্ন স্তরের নেতাকর্মী বলে সংশ্লিষ্ট সূত্রে জানা যায়।
