Re: [mukto-mona] Sharia Law "unavoidable" in UK!!

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46494

The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Williams has consciously or unconsciously recommended effective expansion of states within a state, authorities within an authority and governments within a government. I am saying expansion because of the fact that Jewish and Sharia courts are already operating in the U.K. in some fashion in a limited scale. Those who abhor the ever growing power of the state and the concomitant ever waning power of an individual will obviously welcome the Archbishop's statement. Separation of the church from the state and the resultant loss of authority and control by the church over the state historically has not been a pleasant idea for the church. As a matter of fact the church itself aspired and probably still aspire to become the state itself. Currently in the Islamic world Iran is a good example. Talibani Afghanistan was another perfect example. Influence of churches on various candidates in state elections even in most advanced countries is quite
noticeable.
Is the Archbishop too naive or he has some hidden conservative Christian agenda? Or is he really a liberal and broadminded person who has good intention to accommodate everybody with the British pluralistic society?

Dear Friend --
Make Phone Calls from Home You did it.
Not just on Tuesday, but every day for a year, you did what the cynics said we couldn't do.
You said the time has come to get beyond the same old tactics that divide and distract us, and you gave people -- young and old, rich and poor, black, white, Latino, and Asian -- a reason to believe again.
Because of your work, we won the most states and delegates on February 5th and finished strongly all across the country.
And the momentum you created won't stop now. Together we're building a campaign that will compete in the general election -- and a united Democratic Party that can lead this country for the next generation.
You can keep it going by reaching out to supporters in states that are holding their primaries and caucuses this weekend and early next week.
Sign up now to use our online calling tool, and make calls from your own home today:
You've set an amazing standard and provided a huge boost as we gear up for the next round of contests. Thanks to you, we have a new wind at our backs, and we're ready to carry our message across the nation.
It's the same message we took from Iowa to South Carolina and across the nation on February 5th -- the same message we had when we were up and when we were down -- that out of many, we are one.
And if we are met with cynicism and doubt and folks who tell us that we can't, we will respond with those three simple words that sum up the spirit of this nation:
Yes, we can.
Thank you for all of your hard work,
Barack

[mukto-mona] Free Arifur Rahman, NOW.

If some people have deliberately forgotten the interned cartoonist Arifur Rahman but this young man must be hurting their lonely conscious. It's not the unfortunate cartoonist who is languishing in jail; it's the entire nation's moral integrity that has been shut off by the present administration to pamper a handful of religious merchants. A faith turns out to be totalitarian when it tries to impose dogmas on the faithful. A bunch of half educated clerics have flouted the spirit of universal freedom and the government has become a party to this medieval mindset. A faith that conspires to regiment the process of thoughts is not worth following. It's a shame that a nation who fought and made supreme sacrifices for freedom and justice is behaving otherwise now and colluding with the illiterate and thuggish mullahs. We all demand that Arifur Rahman be freed from jail immediately without any precondition. This is the best and only option left for the government to save its face before it's too late. Arifur Rahman deserves freedom and protection, not punishment.

[mukto-mona] Asbestos threat

Daily Dose Of Asbestos 6 Feb 08
(http://tehelka.com/story_main37.asp?filename=cr160208dailydose.asp)
This May an international convention is set to limit the use of asbestos. Why is India dissenting and risking cancer? asks Nityanand Jayaraman

ONE OF my friends has lung cancer. I'm told I may also get mesothelioma. Asbestos has entered my lungs. I have difficulty in breathing, running, climbing." Ravi Mohite is one of 41 certified victims of asbestosis from a cohort of 181-odd workers from Hindustan Composites Ltd, a Mumbai-based asbestos product manufacturer. With Mesothelioma, what begins as pronounced shortness of breath and a rasping incessant cough, quickly degenerates. The victim suffers rapid weight loss, and coughs out sputum. Such symptoms, though, can take 20 years or more from the time of exposure to emerge. There is no help in sight for Mohite or for the more than one lakh Indian workers who are exposed to this deadly fibre every day at the workplace.

Asbestos is widely used in Asia as insulation material, and in asbestos-cement products such as pipes and roofing. At least 10 million lives will be lost globally before asbestos is banned worldwide, according to a 2004 report in the international journal Environmental Health Perspectives. In Roro, close to Chaibasa in Jharkhand, Hyderabad Asbestos Cement Products Ltd of the CK Birla group, abandoned the chrysotile asbestos mines 25 years ago, and left the waste piled on top of a hill. The wastes now wash down on Adivasi villages at the foothills of Roro Hills.

Meanwhile, a new report compiled by Corporate Accountability Desk, a program of New Delhi-based The Other Media, reveals that the Indian government is concerned more about the health of the asbestos cement industry than health of workers. Titled "A Fox in the Hen House", the report documents, in the words of the asbestos industry and the Ministry of Chemicals, a tale of government-industry nexus to manufacture science with the stated intent of defending chrysotile asbestos use. More than 40 countries have banned chrysotile asbestos, which finds use as insulation material, and in pipes and roofing. In May 2008, the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention on Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides will meet to consider listing chrysotile as a material requiring prior informed consent (PIC) for international trade. India is one of six countries opposing the inclusion of asbestos against the wishes of 95 percent of parties to the Convention.

LEST ITS opposition be termed unscientific, the Ministry of Chemicals in 2004 commissioned study for Rs 60 lakh — funded by the asbestos cement industry by Rs 16 lakhs — to assess the health and environmental hazards of chrysotile. "Using science to inform policy that will affect millions of people is laudable," says Madhumita Dutta, author of the report and an environmental justice advocate. "This is made-to-order science. It is unethical, ill-designed and will prove to be an international embarrassment for India and NIOH." Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Occupational Health is the agency chosen to conduct the study. All forms of asbestos, to varying degrees, increase the risk of lung cancer and cause mesothelioma.

The asbestos industry grudgingly acknowledged the hazards of most forms of asbestos after delaying regulatory action for nearly a century since the first evidence emerged in 1899 linking asbestos with a fatal disease. But the industry has dug its heels to keep markets open for chrysotile, an asbestos variety that it claims is less risky when used in controlled conditions. About 95 percent of all asbestos used worldwide is chrysotile. "It was chrysotile that we worked with, and chrysotile that caused my illness," Mohite says. The WHO estimates that 125 million people are being occupationally exposed to asbestos, and that such exposures lead to 90,000 preventable deaths annually. The squeeze on asbestos began in the 1980s in industrialised nations that were faced with mounting litigation costs and crippling compensation claims filed by injured workers. Simultaneously, asbestos-producing countries — Canada is the largest producer — began pushing the product to unsuspecting markets in the South that were ready for anything with a cheap price tag.

Today, 90 percent of the countries with the highest percent increases in asbestos consumption are in Asia, with India accounting for 10 percent of global consumption in 2005. Just 17 Indian companies producing asbestos cement products have chalked more than 30 percent growth, producing more than $200 million worth of products in 2005. According to Laurie Kazan-Allen, an asbestos industry watcher with the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat in London, "The industry's success buys it powerful allies." The Ministry of Chemicals set up a Review Committee to guide the NIOH study. The study is predisposed to justify continued asbestos use, the Other Media report alleges.

A letter of April 24, 2006 from the Ministry to NIOH is seemingly open about what the findings of the study should be: "The deliverables will include generation of data which would justify the safe standards of (chrysotile's) usage as also the reasons/ rationale justifying its non-inclusion/or otherwise in the PIC ambit." However, subsequent minutes of Review Committee meetings and the definition of stakeholders — only asbestos industry and chrysotile asbestos-producing and consuming countries — suggest a strong inclination to manipulate data. "The study will specifically indicate as to how technology has made working conditions better. The same will include relevant photographs showing protective measures being undertaken," says a note dated April 18, 2007. "After submitting the draft report, NIOH will organise a national workshop to discuss the findings with the relevant industry stakeholders and based on the feedback the final report will be prepared," reports another letter from the Ministry to NIOH.

AN INDUSTRY representative, however, was emphatic in his denial of the very existence of a "review" committee. "First, there is no review committee. It cannot be there. We are only assisting in providing facilities and logistics. We have no access to the report in progress," claims Brig AK Sethi of the Asbestos Cement Products Manufacturers Association. "Peer review has been replaced by payer review... the results will have no credibility," says Dr Barry Castleman, a US-based environmental consultant who has spent a lifetime tracking the asbestos industry. The Indian government and asbestos industry's justification for continued asbestos use hinges on the theoretical possibility of "controlled use", a claim dismissed even by the World Trade Organisation, a body known to be averse to labour and environmental objections to free trade. In 2000, the WTO dismissed Canada's appeal against France's decision to impose a ban on chrysotile. WTO's 2001 report is revealing: "...scientific evidence of record for this finding of carcinogenicity of chrysotile asbestos fibres is so clear, voluminous, and is confirmed a number of times by a variety of international organisations, as to be practically overwhelming."

The Indian ship-breaking industry presents the starkest demonstration of "controlled use". The multi-billion dollar industry employs migrant labour to strip asbestos insulation from dead ships. If released and used in its evolving form as a scientific justification of continued asbestos use in the country, the NIOH study will, in Castleman's words, expose "the Indian government's role as a modern low point in corruption of governments by the asbestos industry."

[mukto-mona] Shubhradeep Chakravorty's documentary not allowed to be screened

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Condemn the Assault on Freedom of Expression

Bhopal : Shubhradeep Chakravorty's documentary Not Allowed to be screened

The growing intolerance of the saffron outfits towards anything which does not meet their distorted worldview was on display once again. This time the target of their assault was Shubhradeep Chakravorty's recent documentary on encounter killings in Gujarat titled ' Encountered on Saffron Agenda'.

Shubhradeep, who is a New Delhi based documentary filmmaker, has made the much discussed 'Godhra Tak : The Terror Trail'. The recent documentary which was shot in seven states, is based on investigative documentation of few encounter killings in Gujarat in recent times. A significant commonality between all these encounters was that those killed in these encounters were said to have on a mission to kill the Chief Minister Narendra Modi who had allegedly organised the 2002 genocide of Muslims in the state after Godhra train burning incident.

Yuva Samvad, an organisation of Youth had organised the screeing of the documentary on 7 th February at AICUF Ashram, Bhopal. Shubhradeep was also present on the occasion to participate in the ensuing discussion. The screeing of the documentary was supposed to start at 7 p.m. but before it could happen a horde of Bajrand Dal activists numbering around 70 came to the venue and disrupted the show.

Police also refused to give any protection to the programme and in fact took the Delhi based director of the film along with an activist of Yuva Samvad to their control room. It compelled the organisers of the programme to call off the screening despite the fact that the film does not come under the 'banned' category. The Bajrang Dal activists also entered the office of the Ashram and threatened the authorities there. Police remained a mute spectator to the whole developments.

It is for everyone to see that this assault on freedom of expression was another sign of the growing fascist dominance in the state of Madhya Pradesh where unruly saffron crowd is calling all the shots and administration is acting as a mere spectator.

It is high time that every peace, justice loving person raise their voice in unison to condemn such acts and express our total solidarity with people who are struggling against such forces.

(For any further details about the incident contact yuvasamvad@gmail.com )

RE: [ALOCHONA] leadership in B'desh

Recent events in Bdesh....have reconfirmed that Hasina and Khaleda are the most popular leaders. And most probably, AL + BNP will win...if there is an election tomorrow.

It is also true that AL + BNP are the most corrupt parties in the country. Lot of AL+ BNP leaders have stolen millions in the past ... from public funds. They are the examples of corrupt, inefficient, greedy  human beings in B'desh. Their families, friends and associates  are also involved in stealing  public wealth as well.

So...for how long...in the name of democracy...we will allow these thugs...to destroy our economy.....poison our reputation....and.....damage the social fabric??

When we will learn more about " self-improvement , simplicity and honesty"? Which leaders  will assist us to create a better, happy, safe  society?

Poeple who think that hasina and Khaleda are " queen sheba from heaven "......need to ask themselves.......how often...they had honestly....
evaluated....the rotten, smelly performance of their beloved leaders.

Khoda hafez.

He wanted to express his view that how out substandard religious traders uses

We have seen these religious bigots attacked religious minority in our country

of damaging nature in this cartoon? Let us examine one more time what was there
in this text-based cartoon titled Naam (name) based on conversation between an
elderly and a kid on its September of 2007 issue.

Elder person: Boy, what is your name?
Kid: My name is Babu.
Elder person: It is customary to mention Mohammed before the name.

Elder person: What is your father's name?
Kid: Mohammed Abu

Elder person: What is this in your lap?
Kid: Mohammed cat

To me it is a mere satire of our naming culture, which follows not religion in
its essence but a false perception of religion. I see no sign of disgracing
Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) or Islam through this cartoon called NAAM (name).

Islam and its prophets teachings have been violated many folds more in the
hands of these mullahs in Bangladesh and elsewhere who is protesting this
cartoon. You do not have to go far but read any daily news from Bangladesh and
you will get how the sermon of these mullahs in the name of Fatwa destroyed so
many innocent families. It is not cartoon or books, which brings bad name for
Islam and its Prophet but the illiterate mullahs who defame our religion.

It is sometime ago, November of 1998 Kishor Kontho a monthly magazine of
Islami Chatra Shibir printed a very similar joke. No one of these Islamic sole
agents at that time or now demanded that author of that joke or the editor of
the magazine should be brought to justice and magazine license should be
revoked. Readers of that joke took it as mere fun with the spirit of the section
titled Hashir Baksho.
Please go to following web link to view Shibir cartoon

http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/Shamim_Chowdhury/mullah_double_standard.htm
Islam and its prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) are not so fragile that a mere
cartoon or few lines of text can damage its serenity. I rather see it was
Barrister Moinul, powerful adviser of the government who played the role of The
Pied Piper of Hamelin tuning his pipe to bring the worst out of ordinary. Moinul
and probably the entire government wanted to divert the nation eyes on some less
important matter to accomplish their hidden big agenda of the time.

Addressing Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haq Amini, IOJ Vice
President Maulana Muhammad Mahiuddin, and Secretary General Mufti Faizullah Bar
Moinul Hosein said, "There is a conspiracy to create a dangerous and unwanted
situation," Mainul said, adding, "Everyone has to remain united against the
conspiracy to destabilize the country."

Despicable Bar Moinul the Bottolar ukil, this dishonest man with hidden agenda
since his assumption of power as adviser until his rock bottom fall is made every effort to divide the nation. Getting the mighty backing of the owner of tanks and gun is making him thinking invincible, not understanding his days will be over soon.

I like to take this opportunity to condemn Prothom Alo editor and publisher
for not standing beside Arifur Rahman the young cartoonist and providing him
with a lawyer to defend him. I ask all journalists of Prothom Alo and others to
raise their voice against all injustice and attempt to divert a simple matter
into a conspiratorial one.

I demand government free Mr. Arifur Rahman immediately and take proactive role
rather then fanning the issue.
Thanks
Shamim Chowdhury

A wise article if you agree, like I do, that a revolution like Iran is not the answer for Pakistan's troubles. Shaheryar Azhar, moderator, The Forum

Excerpt: "This is not to suggest than an Islamist awakening in Pakistan is on the horizon, or that Pakistanis must choose between an unpopular autocrat or a Taliban-style government. On the contrary, Pakistan's liberals are brave to agitate for democracy, the rule of law, and accountability for Musharraf, whose presidency appears beyond rehabilitation. But they should learn from Iran's revolution that their means of agitating for political reform are relevant to the political ends they hope to achieve......In 1978, Iran's liberals were bent on removing the Shah by any means. Instead of creating an atmosphere conducive to an Iranian Gandhi, they unwittingly helped usher into power Ayatollah Khomeini and a theocratic regime less tolerant than the one they helped unseat. Pakistan's Iranian Shadow

by Karim Sadjadpour*

As the future of both Pakistan and its president, Pervez Musharraf, wallow in uncertainty in the wake of Benazir Bhutto's assassination, parallels are being drawn to the 1979 fall of the Shah and the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Once again, a "pro-American" autocrat seems to be rapidly losing his grip on power, with his US ally only half-heartedly standing by him. The liberal elite and intelligentsia rail against the dictator, confident that their country is primed for secular democracy.

The obvious lesson to be drawn from 1979 is that America unwisely rested its entire strategic relationship with Iran on the shoulders of an unpopular dictator. When his regime crumbled, so did America's ability to realize its interests there.

But the Iranian revolution holds another lesson for Pakistani liberals: obsessed with evicting the Shah, Iran's intelligentsia was delusional about their own society and their potential to emerge victorious via an abrupt political upheaval. Once the Shah left, the radical minority that was willing to fight and die for its cause devoured the "moderate majority," establishing Islamist rule in short order.

To be sure, profound political and cultural distinctions exist between Iran in the 1970's and contemporary Pakistan. Iran lacked an independent judiciary, basic press freedoms, and civil society organizations. Contemporary Pakistan has, to varying degrees, all of these. More importantly, Iran's Shia clerics were both organized and politically active in a way that Pakistan's Sunni clergy have not been. Indeed, Pakistan's Islamist parties have never won more than 12% of the popular vote.

It would be wrong, however, to think that Pakistan is immune from the Muslim world's Islamist undercurrents. Around 40% of Pakistanis live below the poverty line, half the population is illiterate, and, among those who are literate, many have been schooled in Wahhabi-funded madrasas. Various opinion polls consistently show that a sizable minority of Pakistanis has a favorable view of Osama bin Laden, an unfavorable view of the US, and believe that implementing Islamic law (Sharia) should be a priority.

A Pakistani intellectual once confessed to me, "I fear the weak electoral showings of Islamists in Pakistan has more to do with the fact that a compelling, charismatic Islamist leader – a Pakistani Hassan Nasrallah – has yet to emerge, not that his message wouldn't resonate." Few Iranians had ever heard of Ayatollah Khomeini until 1978, but it didn't take long for his message to electrify millions.

The army has always been the strongest bulwark in assuring that Pakistan does not go the way of Iran. But while the officer corps may be steadfast defenders of secular rule, the rank and file reflects Pakistani society. In the event of an Islamist political awakening, the army's allegiances are not guaranteed. In Iran, apart from senior commanders, who were either killed or fled the country, the Shah's powerful, staunchly secular army switched sides to Khomeini's revolutionary government virtually overnight.

This is not to suggest than an Islamist awakening in Pakistan is on the horizon, or that Pakistanis must choose between an unpopular autocrat or a Taliban-style government. On the contrary, Pakistan's liberals are brave to agitate for democracy, the rule of law, and accountability for Musharraf, whose presidency appears beyond rehabilitation. But they should learn from Iran's revolution that their means of agitating for political reform are relevant to the political ends they hope to achieve.

Emotions are raw in the aftermath of Bhutto's death. More than 50 people have been killed in riots, and both her party and that of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif are contemplating mass demonstrations to bring down Musharraf's government. But the politics of rage, retribution, and rioting will not bring the kind of tranquil, pluralistic democracy that Bhutto envisioned. The desire to exact revenge on Musharraf for stifling democracy and failing to provide Bhutto with sufficient security will only inflame a political atmosphere that Pakistani liberals seek to de-radicalize.

Not only in Iran, but also in Lebanon, Palestine, and Iraq, history has shown that Islamists thrive amid political chaos and violence. Similarly in Pakistan, it is dangerous to bet that the country's pro-democracy lawyers, intellectuals, and students will emerge victorious in the tumult and potential carnage of street politics.

As John Limbert, the erudite Iran scholar and retired US diplomat (taken hostage in Iran for 444 days) once reflected on the 1979 Iranian revolution, "Our liberal-minded Iranian friends proved to be helpless in political turmoil....[T]hey could write biting editorials," but lacked the stomach to "throw acid, beat up opponents, organize street gangs...and engage in the brutality that wins" in political uprisings.

Pakistani liberals may be right that their country is invulnerable to an Islamist power grab. But the costs are too high to be impulsive, and the storms of political Islam are difficult to forecast.

In 1978, Iran's liberals were bent on removing the Shah by any means. Instead of creating an atmosphere conducive to an Iranian Gandhi, they unwittingly helped usher into power Ayatollah Khomeini and a theocratic regime less tolerant than the one they helped unseat. Three decades later, millions of chastened Iranians wish they could relive those heady days differently; their Pakistani counterparts would be wise to heed their hindsight.

[mukto-mona] Fwd: From Paul Kurtz: Join Our Response to Deadly Tornado Outbreak!

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Center for Inquiry" <info@centerforinquiry.net>
Date: February 8, 2008 10:14:38 PM NST
Subject: From Paul Kurtz: Join Our Response to Deadly Tornado Outbreak!

Center For Inquiry
3965 Rensch Rd. Amherst, NY 14228

Dear Friend,

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and suffering caused by tornadoes this week in the Southeastern United States, at least 57 known dead.  With your assistance, we can help. We are launching a drive through SHARE (the Secular Humanist Aid and Relief Effort) to raise charitable funds to assist displaced families in Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

This tornado outbreak is the deadliest in the United States since the mid-1980's. Because this was an early-season event that probably took people off guard, damage will likely be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.  One hard-hit county in Tennessee estimated that they had suffered at least $47 million in property damages.

The current financial loss estimates are sure to rise quickly.  The needs of those who've lost their family members, their homes, and their livelihoods will be very great. Your assistance is very important and could make a huge difference for the victims of this tragic disaster.  Please join with us and other humanists and skeptics to help out in this crisis.  Your support is greatly appreciated!

The address for SHARE is PO Box 664, Amherst, NY 14226, or you may make your contribution to SHARE directly by clicking here. All funds sent to SHARE are tax exempt in the United States.

Thank you.

Paul Kurtz, Chairman

The Center for Inquiry and its affiliated organizations have launched this initiative to raise charitable funds to aid families affected by the recent tornadoes in the Southeastern United States. Secularists, humanists, and skeptics may make their contribution directly through SHARE, the Secular Humanist Aid and Relief Effort, sponsored by the Council for Secular Humanism. This charity, maintained by the Council for Secular Humanism for over two decades to channel aid to victims of natural disasters, forwards funds received to organizations providing direct relief to the victims.
