[ALOCHONA] For them

For them she has stature of Abraham Lincoln
For them she has the dignity of Kofi Annan
For them she has the intellect of Tony Blair
For them she has the morals of Mother Teresa
For them she has the serenity of the Dalai Lama
For them she has the principles of Mahatma Gandhi
For them she has the charm of Nelson Mandela
For them she has the aura of the Emperor of Japan
For them she has the vision of Deng Xiaoping

For them she is the owner of Bangladesh
For them she is the honour of Bangladesh
For them she is the pride of Bangladesh
For them she is the best of Bangladesh

For had she won the Nobel Peace Prize by some accident or intent,
not one of them would have been surprised or confused.
For they would all run through the streets yelling Joy or Zindabad,
leaping over the body of the armless and legless beggar.

God save us all from the curse of the blind who think they can see.
God save us all from the curse of fools who think they are clever.
God save us all from the curse of dramatic sentimentality.
God save us all from the curse of rampant mediocrity.

God save us all from the curse of Khaleda and Hasina.

[ALOCHONA] The role of daily star and a letter published in that daily

dear all,

. When I go through any news in bangla daily I try to post  it(the news)in groups.I try to copy it from daily star.I failed.  I noticed that the daily is very much careful so that no news is published in it that is not good for India n USA.Indian Bsf frequently kills our people. But never see this news in this daily. There are many such instance. But this daily is very much careful in distorting the images of the country not liked by the said countries..
In today's issue it published a letters where I see some bad and false comments about our friendly country Iran. The writer terms Iranian leaders as" irani mullahs".educated women are considered as enemies of the state. But the truth is that more than 70% student of Tehran university is female.

Iran should take a look why nuclear-armed Pakistan is disintegrating in intramural bloodletting

I am writing with reference to Post Breakfast: "Iran, the region and the United States," by Muhammad Zamir (Feb. 16).

Although the Iranian Mullahs claim that their nuclear programme is designed strictly for peaceful uses, there is near universal consensus that Iran, with its vast reserves of oil and natural gas, had no need for highly expensive nuclear energy and in any case, the very nature of its secretive nuclear programme contradicts its assertion. There is another reason touted by many apologists for Iran that if neighbouring Pakistan is allowed to have nuclear weapons, Iran has also the right to acquire its own atomic weapons.

But Iran should take a better look at Pakistan. Despite its nuclear weapons, Pakistan has virtually disintegrated as a viable nation. Its military rulers are facing daily attacks from the extremists and have given up control of the tribal areas. While President Musharraf is hunkered down in his presidential palace, the whole country has been convulsing in bloodlettings. Before the very eyes of its security forces, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated by a suicide bomber and scores of its troops are being killed daily by the Taliban/al-Qaeda and their acolytes. Pakistan has become a veritable "Terroristan" where most Pakistanis are scared for their lives. A suicide bomber near Peshawar killed 13, two officials with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission were kidnapped and its ambassador to Afghanistan disappeared at the Khyber Pass. All of this only a week away from national elections.

"It sometimes appears as if there is no government in this country," former interior minister Nasirullah Babar said in an interview on Feb. 12. Candidates are living in fear for their lives and cannot campaign. Senator Asfandyar Wali, a member of the Awami National Party (AWP) is hiding at home surrounded by armed security guards because suicide bombers are seeking to kill him. There have been two attacks on his party's election gatherings last week. Two candidates have been killed. All indications point to continued bloodbath after the election. What purpose the nuclear weapons will serve if Pakistan degenerates into total chaos? Moreover, with the Taliban/al-Qaeda and their sympathisers deeply infiltrating the armed forces and the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), there is a genuine apprehension that the Pakistan army, with its nuclear arsenal, might fall into the hands of the extremists.

Iranian mullahs have proved to be extremists by the way they are treating their fellow Iranians who don't agree with them. Iranian author Azar Nafisi, who was expelled from her teaching position at Tehran University for refusing to wear veil, tells us about the brutality of the Shia Mullahs in her book "Reading Lolita in Tehran." Her story of Iran is a country where the ruling Mullahs "regularly hang people in the streets," -- a country where educated women are considered as enemies of the state. No one will feel safe with nuclear weapons in the hands of such brutal rulers. If they can slaughter their own people for no reason, they will have little compunction to supply nuclear arms to extremist groups. A hallmark of a good or bad government is the way they treat their own people. By that definition, the Iranian regime is definitely a bad government.

However, there is a non-violent way to topple such a regime by empowering the opposition groups to bring an end to tyranny through non-violent means. It may take time, but it will be far more effective. Finally, the never-ending bloodletting in Pakistan has shown that nuclear arms cannot help a country bent on destroying itself.

[ALOCHONA] Democratic minded political parties of BD!

Dear Mr Enam Haque,
This party never believe in democracy. When they had 2/3 majority in parliament they introduced one party system in our country banning all political parties. They also baned all news papers .So these are very natural for them.they introduce  political killing in our country. They are  famous for ballot box hijack in ducsu election 1973.

Enam Haque <enam28@yahoo.com> wrote:
A rally arranged by AL in front of United Nations in New York yesterday was disciplined by police. Women wing of AL protesters claimed 'unconditional' release of Sk Hasina. While protesting for the release of their leader they started fighting among themselves. NY Police had to intervene twice to bring order in the demonstration.
These Bangladeshis while in Bangladesh make all kinds of nuisances, while abroad they are the shame for the whole nation. When other nationals are creating huge positive image for their nations, they create a huge burden for us. Before going out to protest outside they need to practice democracy in their meetings, and in their parties.

Mr. Obama's one big advantage is that he is a good talker. As of now he seems to be more popular than his rival, Ms Clinton.

It is now clear that his partial identity on religion is one important factor for his popularity to the majority of Bangladeshis. I see intolerance to others practising their right of freedom of speech. Within this fold are some big names under the so-called "liberal congregation of non-believers, skeptics, and super liberals" wrappers. It takes a while to read the complex minds of human beings.

AL Gore lost by a few votes in 2002 because he had a Jew as his running mate. Many vetaran Democrates crossed the party line. I remember lot of Internet chats of that time.

[mukto-mona] Wall Street Journal on Obama and Mc Cain

As someone who does not believe in a god who would drop down from the
skies to bring enlightenment to the whole world, I am equally
skeptical of "heroes." This, especially, when the supposed hero
promises to bring utopia down in the manner of an Old Testament
prophet who promises to deliver the word and rule on earth of his god
to his people. Barack Obama represents just such a phenomenon - a
religious evangelical type who drum-beats his message using religious
imagery to a nation of mostly believers, with some agnostics and
possibly even atheists joining the bandwagon after letting their
hearts overrule their minds. Admiration always mandates the absence
of an independent view - a gushing fan cannot see any flaw in the
object of his/her admiration, Obama being the equivalent of an Elvis
Presley before a crowd of Tennessee teenagers.

This, then, is a counter-view in response to the praise of
Obama that has ben posted on these forums earlier. While I do not
endorse Dan Henninger's views in their entirety, I am always
suspicious of religionists as rulers. Even while they display
somewhat secular tendencies through their careers, there is just a
slight religious epiphany that could cause them to turn completely
around and claim that it was their belief that drove them to do this.
This, then, is a response taken from the newspapers (as the other
posts so far have been) to the supporters of Barack Obama over
here and elsewhere.

WONDER LAND
By DANIEL HENNINGER

Obama at the Top
February 14, 2008; Page A16
Hillary Clinton probably didn't watch the stem-winder speech that
Barack Obama delivered Tuesday night after cleaning her clock in the
Potomac primaries. If not, she should.

It was tiresome.

The speech was classic Obama. Beautifully written and beautifully
delivered, the words soaring to the rafters of a Madison, Wis.,
auditorium filled mostly with 17,000 cheering students. The rookie
senator had just come off blowouts of Hillary in Virginia and
Maryland.

The senator's charisma and appeal has been undeniable. He is almost
insanely eloquent. Still, about halfway into this (very long) speech,
the feeling was hard to shake: This is getting hard to listen to.
Again and again.

Is Sen. Obama peaking? Probably not. The across-the-board growth in
his Potomac numbers was impressive. The more appropriate question
would be, is the Obama wave cresting?

Barack Obama has ridden these primaries like a skilled surfer,
catching big emotional waves and riding them spectacularly, letting
this new force carry him forward. Even the biggest waves, however,
eventually break on the shore.

The conventional critique of Sen. Obama has held that his pitch is
perfect but at some point he'll need to make the appeal more concrete.

I think the potential vulnerability runs deeper. Strip away the new
coat of paint from the Obama message and what you find is not only
familiar. It's a downer.

Up to now, the force of Sen. Obama's physical presentation has so
dazzled audiences that it has been hard to focus on precisely what he
is saying. "Yes, we can! Yes, we can!" Can what?

Listen closely to that Tuesday night Wisconsin speech. Unhinge
yourself from the mesmerizing voice. What one hears is a message that
is largely negative, illustrated with anecdotes of unremitting
bleakness. Heavy with class warfare, it is a speech that could have
been delivered by a Democrat in 1968, or even 1928.

Here is the edited version, stripped of the flying surfboard:

"Our road will not be easy . . . the cynics. . . where lobbyists
write check after check and Exxon turns record profits . . . That's
what happens when lobbyists set the agenda. . . It's a game where
trade deals like Nafta ship jobs overseas and force parents to
compete with their teenagers to work for minimum wage at Wal-
Mart . . . It's a game . . . CEO bonuses . . . while another mother
goes without health care for her sick child . . . We can't keep
driving a wider and wider gap between the few who are rich and the
rest who struggle to keep pace . . . even if they're not rich . . ."

Here's his America: "lies awake at night wondering how he's going to
pay the bills . . . she works the night shift after a full day of
college and still can't afford health care for a sister who's
ill . . . the senior I met who lost his pension when the company he
gave his life to went bankrupt . . . the teacher who works at Dunkin'
Donuts after school just to make ends meet . . . I was not born into
money or status . . . I've fought to bring jobs to the jobless in the
shadow of a shuttered steel plant . . . to make sure people weren't
denied their rights because of what they looked like or where they
came from . . . Now we carry our message to farms and factories."

It ends: "We can cast off our doubts and fears and cynicism because
our dream will not be deferred; our future will not be denied; and
our time for change has come."

Wonder Land columnist Daniel Henninger discusses how Barack Obama's
sometimes bleak image of America will square with Independent voters
in the November elections.
I am not saying all of this is false. But it is a depressing message
to ride all the way to the White House.

Presumably this is a preview of what he intends to run with against
John McCain, who was mentioned several times. (Straw in the wind:
This audience cheered when he called Sen. McCain an American hero.)
Presidential elections now are settled by about 30% of the electorate
that occupies the independent center. In late December, Gallup
released a poll in which 84% of respondents said they were satisfied
with their own lives. At some point in the next 10 months, people
will have to square Sen. Obama's Grapes of Wrath message with the
reality of their lives.

Unease about the economy is real, but Sen. Obama is selling more than
that. He is selling deep grievance over the structure of American
society. That's the same message as John Edwards, or Dennis Kucinich
for that matter. Hillary Clinton's mistake may have been to think
this is 2008, not 1938, with the solution lying in leveraging votes
in a Democratic Congress. Instead of Hillary's wonkish geniuses,
Barack is selling the revolution -- change "from the bottom up."

Right after the Wisconsin speech, TV broadcast another -- by
victorious John McCain. The contrast with Sen. Obama's is stark. The
arc of the McCain speech is upward, positive. Pointedly, he says we
are not history's "victims." Barack relentlessly pushes victimology.

For Sen. Obama the military and national security is a world of
catastrophe welded to Iraq and filled with maimed soldiers. Mr.
McCain locates these same difficult subjects inside the whole of
American military achievement. It nets out as a more positive
message. Recall that Ronald Reagan's signature optimism, when it
first appeared, was laughed at by political pros. Optimism won
elections.

Whatever else, Barack Obama isn't talking sunshine in America. He's
talking fast and furious. People not yet baptized into Obamamania may
start to look past the dazzling theatrics to see a vision of the
United States that is quite grim and could wear thin in the general
election.

There may indeed be a Message B for the fall in the Obama drawer.
This week's speech, like a televangelist's, may be designed to drive
small contributions. The Web-site version ends with an appeal to
donate to "this historic moment." I suspect, though, that it is the
core of the Obama campaign, now or later.

Odds are that he will ride it to the nomination among Democrats for
whom America can never quite escape the Depression. Hillary Clinton
can only offer what she's got -- a clear-eyed ambition to get, and
use, Democratic power.

Everything in life has a top -- stocks, football teams and political
phenoms, as she well knows. Though down, Hillary ought to suck it up
for Ohio and Texas and hope the Obama wave starts to break. On
current course, it will.

[ALOCHONA] Ekushey amader porichoy

AMOR EKUSHEY  / Ekushey Amader Porichoy

Though the 'language movement' of 1948-52 began as a demand for Bangla instead of Urdu as a State language of Pakistan ( Bangla was, by the way, considered the provincial Stae language of East Pakistan from the beginning), many people believe now, in retrospect, it was a foil for a huge regret --a regret for the creation of Pakistan. A large but late relization dawned on the conscience of Bengali Muslims that they should not have taken part in the break-up of India on the basis of religion alone.
Looking back, remembering the excitement and panic in my family with three of my uncles imprisoned in Dhaka Central Jail in February 1952 for taking part in the 'movement', I see it as a movement for an idealism that yearned for a secular state. Our identity -- our 'porichoy' is through our language and culture. Our religions are parts of our culture, not  separate entities outside it.
The whole idea of a 'State language' was and still is a mid-20th century hoax -- an imported idea from Europe thrown in the midst of India as a golden apple of Strife -- yet another imperialist trick to keep the former colonies forever in-fighting amongst themselves. India is a huge cultural space with several big languages and their numerous variations. The European model of 'one state=one language' is simply inapplicable in the Indian context. [Please read that excellent book, Language and Politics in Pakistan  by Tarique Rahman, who traces the history of the British imperialist efforts to communalize major Indian languages].
I am so glad that the day is being commemorated today as the International Mother Language Day, providing the non-Bangla speakers of Bangladesh to be proud of their own culture on this day. Let us not forget that one of the native languages of Dhaka city is Urdu, and the premier modern poet in Bangla language, the late Shamsur Rahman, was a Dhakaiya Urdu speaker.
The idea of a 'State religion' is even more alien, imported from Fascist Europe, and utterly against the grain of our national character, tradition and history. We must do everything in our power to resist this attempt to turn Bangladesh into a Fascist country under a totalitarian regime of Wahhabi Islam.  There is no room for a State religion in Bangla, therefore Say NO to STATE RELIGION!
What a pathetic sleight-of-hand trickery is this question -- If State language why not state religion?

[mukto-mona] Why Obama!!

I am not an American but the extreme power exercise of America upon the whole world attracts my attention to American presidency race. This is the first time American people can choose one woman or black as a president. If I were a voter then I must choose Obama. America should come out from prejudices and that acid test can be done by choosing Obama as president. I know that imperialist America will not change for this choice. We want to see the progress by defeating prejudices of hating black and discrimination of a person from Muslim culture. Obama has black origin and he has Muslim cultural heritage also and this is the right time for American people to change their mindset.  The momentum I observe is positive attitude of the great nation to come out from all kinds of hate and discrimination.

[ALOCHONA] Pharmaceutical Exports is moving in the right direction

Dear All,

I am happy to let you know that few of my advice and strategic proposal to develop the Bangladesh Pharmaceuticals sectors is working.  I have been pushing various pharmaceuticals companies including Bangladesh Drug Administration to encourage manufacturing quality medicines since 2006.

I believe that few them took my advice with great respect and is working to improve manufacturing capabilities with new technologies available in the world.  I still believe that Middle East countries is the Goldmine for getting Pharmaceuticals investment in Bangladesh and asking CTG to formulate a program to attract investment from their excess wealth of US$2 Trillion.

I am still asking CTG to implement my comprehensive proposal to develop Bangladesh Pharmaceutical sector.  This proposal will create 10 Lac jobs in Bangladesh in the next 5 years and export can be reached to US$5 Billion in 5 years.

Regards,
M. M. Chowdhury (Mithu)

Pharmaceutical Exports

F.M. Masum back from Tongi

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are considering to import pharmaceutical products worth Tk 3000 crore every year from Bangladesh. A high-power business delegation of the GCC countries Tuesday expressed satisfaction over the quality and price of medicines manufactured in the Beximco plants. "We are very much satisfied about the quality of Bangladeshi medicine. We just came here to judge the quality of the pharmaceutical products. The quality of products is amazing it is beyond our expectation," said Dr Alaa Rady, a member of the visiting delegation.

"We are pleased seeing the quality and price of the medicine manufactured here. Personally I can say that the infrastructures and facilities here are amazing and equivalent to European and other developed countries' standards," Dr Bader Alanzi, another member of the delegation told reporters. He said, "This is start of the exporting process and we are keenly interested to import pharmaceutical products from Bangladesh but for that we have to work together and it is not that we are going to start importing drugs from tomorrow. But we are hopeful that, after completing the necessary processes, BPL will start exporting to the GCC countries very soon."

The Chief Executive Officer of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd , Nazmul Hassan said, "Middle East is considered as a high potential market and with the establishment of a common market of GCC countries; this region has become one of the most lucrative pharmaceutical markets of the world." He said, "Pharmaceutical products of Bangladesh have enormous exporting opportunities in the various countries in the world and it is one of the most potentials sector after Ready Made Garments (RMG), After successfully qualifying through this audit the company will be able export its medicine to the GCC countries and this will create an enormous opportunity for Bangladesh as a whole."

He said," the Government gives all out supports to the industry, Bangladesh can export a total of Tk10000 crore by the year 2009. The Government should pull out the barriers of registration to promote the export to the various countries and if Bangladesh can avail only in its one percent market." Nazmul Hassan said, "If we can export such big amount of pharmaceutical products, the other countries of the world will be encouraged and that can play a vital role in the economic sector like RMG sector. This is a great opportunity to export to the Gulf region and this will also act as a gateway for Bangladeshi pharmaceutical industry for exporting medicines to this huge market. "

It may be mentioned that the combined pharmaceutical market of the GCC countries is currently valued at over $ 4 billion. Beximco Pharmaceuticals is one of the world's 15 companies and the first in the country, which is producing CFC (Chroroflurocarbon) free and HFA-enriched MDIs, used in asthma and COPD. It may also be mentioned here that under the Quota protocol, the signatory countries are prescribed to stop producing CFC-enriched asthma products by 2008.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Dr Yunus & Grameen Bank

Dr. Mr. Chowdhury:
You offered some very biased and insensitive comments about Dr. Yunus and his organization.  Perhaps you should not forget that Dr. Yunus put Bangladesh in a world map with his distinguished Nobel Prize at a time when Bangladesh ranked one of the worst nations in the world in corruption.  Dr. Yunus' idea is now being experimented and implemented in many parts of the world.
We ought to offer our respect for every visionaries like Mr. Hossain and Dr. Yunus who are the proud figures of Bangladesh, responsible for economic growth, national GDP, employment, and prosperity.  You did mention that they both are "fruit."  You may discard one fruit because you may not like it but all fruits provide nutrition to nurture our growth.

Perhaps, you should not forget that!
You labeled Dr. Yunus and his Grameen Bank "vampire," "stinking cow dung," "kabuliwala" and so forth.  You even indicated Dr. Yunus and his Grameen Bank as bloodsuckers.
I wonder what your depth of background is in economics, social reform, entrepreneurship, social responsibility, national growth and reform and such.  It seems to me you project as a person of  "a little learning is a dangerous thing."  In Bangla, we say, "olpo biddya voyon-kori."
Please don't make a fool of yourself.  Speak and write like an intellectual and stand beside those who are trying to do something for our country.  If you cannot put up with the efforts of these visionaries, then shut up!

Mr. Fazle Hossian Abed a great freedom fighter who along with some of his friend started working among on the breadline people since 1970 when then East Pakistan was struck by historical cyclone of 12th November. During the liberation war, Mr. Abed and his friends worked on the frontline helping the helpless refugees the entire nine months. After the liberation war ended when all freedom fighters returned home Fazle Hossian Abed and his friends did not, they started the real struggle of building a prosperous Bangladesh in light of spirit they attained during long nine months of liberation. Since then his relentless work lifted millions of rural off the cuff people to somewhat humane. The journey that started from Shalla of Sylhet still ongoing many parts of the world. Fazle Hossain Abad's disadvantage is his shyness in front of camera. He does not want him to be portrayed as the savior of poor of the poorest. Fazle Hossain Abed is a real social reformer not a darling poster child of capitalist west unlike Dr. Yunus. I will not say there is no blemish with BRAC or Fazle Hossain Abed, there may be many but comparing the vampire state of Dr. Yunus, his is none.
On the other hand, Dr. Yunus's Grameen Bank sets a pipeline to suck the blood of the poor of the poorest in the name of social enterprise. Dr. Yunus should get an OSCAR award for reenacting the Kabuliwala character from movie to real social life. Grameen's incredibly towering loan interest rate should be note worthy for documentation in Guinness Book of Record.
Dr. Yunus and his involvement with Grameen Phone are on record. He and his so-called social enterprise Grameen are involved with every move of Grameen's illegal VoIP quick moneymaking business. The Grameen is a registered trademark used by Dr. Yunus's Grameen only whether it is Grameen Check or Grameen phone. Professor Mohammed Yunus and Fazle Hassan Abed are visionaries and
leaders of change not only in the context of Bangladesh but from a
global perspective. Only the people who have not objectively
researched enough will utter the ignorant (I am sorry but could not
find a better word to articulate myself) comments about their
contributions. I request these people to read some books (now
available in plenty) on the efforts of Grameen Bank and BRAC in
transforming the rural poverty situations in Bangladesh over the past
thirty years which had a directly positive impact on the overall
socio-economic environment of the entire country. Apart from the
empowerment of the women, eradication of grass roots poverty,
upgarding of rural health and education situation - the increase in
production in rice, vegetables and maize farming, poultry and cattle
farming, pissiculture, textiles and rural handicrafts due to the
involvement and coordiantion of the NGOs like Grameen Bank, BRAC and
others are simply mind boggling. The progress Bangladesh has made
over the past 30 years has lot to do with these individuals and
organizations. The reasons behind the higher interest rate and
service charges are also explained in details in the literature
published on these organizations - the rural poor are provided with
small loans with no securities or collaterals - there is a cost
involved in the process. One needs to have an analytical mind to
understand this ! Best regards, Shafqat

Phone I found the following truth about Grameen Phone's involvement
with corrupt practice and its relation with Dr Yunus. All the
references are given at the end of this message. The issue is a bit
complex and I am not finding Dr. Yunus has anything to do with the
illegal activities committed by Grameen Phone. Dr. Yunus is
associated with Grameen Telecom - not with Grameen Phone. Actually,
Grameen Phone and Grameen Telecom are separate entity. Grameen Phone
is a for-profit organization while Grameen Telecom is a non-profit
organization and a unit of Grameen Bank. Grameen Phone's majority
share (62%) is owned by Telenor and the rest (38%) is owned by
Grameen Telecom. The important thing is that Dr. Yunus is NOT a part
of Grameen Phone's managemnet. In essence, a tense relation is going
on between Dr. Yunus and the management of Grameen Phone for quite
sometime. Dr. Yunus is fighting to obtain the majority shares of
Grameen Phone for Grameen Telecom per a verbal? contract made in the
past (according to Dr. Yunus). Bottomline, Dr. Yunus has nothing to
with the illegal acivities of the Grameen Phone. I collected most of

[mukto-mona] People's Verdict in Pakistan

People's verdict goes against dictatorial regime and their hangers-on. Religious parties of pro-taliban fared badly in North West Frontier Province in Assembly election. Pakistan's ruling party concedes defeat By MATTHEW PENNINGTON,
Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan's ruling party conceded defeat Tuesday after opposition parties routed allies of President Pervez Musharraf in parliamentary elections that could threaten the rule of America's close ally in the war on terror.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted in Musharraf's 1999 coup, suggested that the Pakistani president should listen to the "verdict" of the people in the Monday balloting and step down.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, told AP Television News that "we accept the results with an open heart" and "will sit on opposition benches" in the new parliament."

"All the King's men, gone!" proclaimed a banner headline in the Daily Times. "Heavyweights knocked out," read the Dawn newspaper.

The results cast doubt on the political future of Musharraf, who was re-elected to a five-year term last October in a controversial parliamentary ballot.

The private Geo TV network said the party of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and another group led by ex-premier Nawaz Sharif had so far won 153 seats, more than half of the 272-seat National Assembly.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Q party was a distant third with 38 seats. A ream of party stalwarts and former Cabinet ministers lost in their constituencies.

Final results were not expected before Tuesday evening, but the election's outcome appeared to be a stinging public verdict on Musharraf's rule after his popularity plummeted following his decisions late last year to impose emergency rule, purge the judiciary, jail political opponents and curtail press freedoms.

Sharif reminded reporters Tuesday in Lahore that Musharraf had said he would step down when the people wanted him to do so.

"And now people have given their verdict," Sharif said, adding that political parties should "work together to get rid of dictatorship."

"All the King's men, gone!" proclaimed a banner headline in the Daily Times. "Heavyweights knocked out," read the Dawn newspaper.

With the support of smaller groups and independent candidates, the opposition could gain the two-thirds majority in parliament needed to impeach Musharraf, who has angered many Pakistanis by allying the country with Washington in 2001 to fight al-Qaida and the Taliban after the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States.

Musharraf has promised to work with whatever government emerges from the election. But the former general is hugely unpopular among the public and opposition parties that have been catapulted into power are likely to find little reason to work with him — particularly since he no longer controls the powerful army.

Sharif has been especially outspoken in demanding that Musharraf be removed and that the Supreme Court justices whom the president sacked late last year be returned to their posts. Those judges were fired as they prepared to rule on whether Musharraf's re-election last October was constitutional.

If the opposition falls short of enough votes to remove Musharraf, the new government could reinstate the Supreme Court justices and ask them to declare the October election invalid.

Musharraf, at best, faces the prospect of remaining in power with sharply diminished powers and facing a public hostile to him. Last year he stepped down as army chief, and his successor has pledged to remove the military from politics.

Sen. Joseph Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and one of several U.S. lawmakers who observed the election, said Tuesday the results mean the United States can shift its Pakistan policy.

"This is an opportunity for us to move from a policy that has been focused on a personality to one based on an entire people," Biden said, adding that Washington should help democracy take deeper root in Pakistan.

The PML-Q said it accepted the results, but Pervaiz Elahi, the party's president, noted that the party had stood by Musharraf for five years.

"We respect him, and we are still with him," Elahi, the outgoing chief minister of Punjab province, told Geo TV on Tuesday.

The results could have far-reaching implications for the U.S.-led war on terror, especially Pakistani military operations against al-Qaida and Taliban-style militants in border areas of the northwest. Sharif and others have called for dialogue with the extremists and have criticized military operations in the area because of their impact on civilians.

Religious parties fared badly, and were set to lose their control of the North West Frontier province gained in the last parliamentary elections in 2002, when they benefited from Pakistani anger over the U.S.-led invasion to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Afrasiab Khattak, a leading opposition politician from the northwest, said his Awami National Party did not believe "that a military solution will work," adding his group "will never support American forces coming here and operating."

The Awami National Party, a Pashtun nationalist group, was leading in the northwest with 30 of the 99 contested assembly seats while Bhutto's party was trailing second with 15. The party of pro-Taliban cleric, Maulana Fazl-ur Rehman, won only eight seats, according to a tally reported by the Geo TV station.

In Karachi, the Pakistani stock market rose 2.15 percent to 14,669.87 points and the rupee gained against the U.S. dollar. Traders said the market was reacting positively because the election was generally peaceful.

Although fear and apathy kept millions of voters at home Monday, the elections for national and provincial assemblies were a major step toward democracy in Pakistan, which has been under military rule for the past eight years under Musharraf and for over half of its 60-year history.

But a win by the opposition is likely to restore the public's faith in the political process and quell fears that the results would be rigged in favor of the pro-Musharraf forces.

Islamic militant violence scarred the campaign, most notably the Dec. 27 assassination of charismatic opposition leader Bhutto, but polling day was spared such an attack. The government, however, confirmed 24 election-related deaths in clashes between political parties.

Geo TV said unofficial tallies from 229 of the 268 National Assembly seats being contested showed Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party with 33 percent and Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-N party with 27 percent. The PML-Q was third with 14 percent.

The Election Commission had results for 124 seats, with Sharif's party holding 30 percent, Bhutto's party 27 percent and the PML-Q 12 percent.

Several close political allies of Musharraf were election casualties. The chairman of the ruling party, the foreign minister and railways minister were among those who lost seats in Punjab, the most populous province and a key electoral battleground.

The Rohingya community of Arakan, Burma is one of the most down-trodden ethnic minorities of the world. They are victim of political oppression, economic exploitation, cultural slavery and communal violence in their ancestral land Arakan where they have been living centuries after centuries.

Arakan which is a land of one of the most fertile regions in Asia with great variety of unexplored resources, has turned into a land of bloods and tears since the beginning of the 20th century where the Rohingyas have been groaning under the crushing wheels of either state sponsored terrorists or the religious fanatics decades after decades.

Restortoration of Democracy n Burma:

There is no denying the fact that it is the lack of democratic atmosphere which has closed all the doors for the restoration of human rights of Rohingyas. Despite the continuous outcries of the international peace loving community to restore peace and democracy in Burma, the military regime has been continuously playing game to defuse the international outrage and to trample the people of Burma under the military boots for an indefinite period. Refusing to hand over power to the overwhelmingly elected representatives of the people of Burma during the General Election of 1990, detaining the national icon of democracy, peace and liberty, Daw Aung San Suu Kyie and all other popular leaders of democratic movement and ethnic minorities years after years and brutally cracking down all anti military protests, the Generals have demonstrated the world that there is no words like "human rights" in their vocabulary and they have no interest to learn what democracy or civil liberty means. So, the restoration of democracy in Burma is a precondition to stop human rights violations against the Rohingyas.

Restoration of Citizenship of Rohingyas:

Nevertheless, as a part of groundwork for any sort of human rights violations against Rohingyas under the aegis of law, the most notorious action which the military rulers have done is the amendment to the country's Citizenship Law in 1982 which has reduced the Rohingyas to the status of a Stateless Gypsy Community of the world, depriving them of citizenship and making them illegal immigrants in their ancestral motherland where they have been living for centuries having a long history, a language, a heritage, a culture and a tradition of their own that they had built up in their motherland through the ages of existence which can be traced back to the 7th Century.

Under the aegis of this notorious law, the military rulers have adopted all sorts of mechanism to turn Arakan into a "Rohingyaless" land through the series of genocidal operations and all other sorts of human rights violations. Through this act, the military regime has incited racism, xenophobia, inequality, intolerance and discrimination against the Rohingya, depriving them of their fundamental rights to citizenship, movement, education, job, marriage, property, healthcare and other civic liberty. So, in order to restore human rights of Rohingyas, it is the foremost need for the government of Burma to annul the black amendment of citizenship law of 1982 and to sign and ratify the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness and to remove all the obstacles in the way to let the Rohingyas enjoy the right to citizenship as well as for all their children who were born in exile as both documented or undocumented refugees.

Restoration of Communal Harmony in Arakan:

Another heinous tactics that the military rulers have been engaged in since the military take over of Gen. Ne Win in 1962 to exterminate Rohingyas from Arakan, is to fuel extreme communal frenzy among the Rakhines and Rohingyas in Arakan. The people of Arakan who had been once living in peace and perfect amity, have to witness many often recurrent phenomenon of communal violence, social anarchy and widespread unrest goaded by the despotic military rulers.

Today, Arakan is a land of communal enmity and hatred which has reached at such a scale that the Rohingyas can hardly pass through the Rakhine localities. The movement of Rohingyas from one place to another by buses, launches or steamers is always full of risks and hazards. Thousands of highly Rohingya educated personalities have fallen victims of assassination at the hands of a section of the Rakhine communalists. In fact, it is the military regime which has turned the land into an earthly hell where tens of thousands of innocent human beings are being offered as the requiem of the communal conflagration with a notion "Kill a Rohingya first if a cobra and a Rohingya are found together". So, without restoration of communal harmony between the two sister communities of Arakan, the Rohingyas and Rakhines, any effort to stop human rights violations against the Rohingyas, is bound to end in debacle. Peace can prevail in Arakan only when these two communities will be able to create an atmosphere where they can live in peaceful coexistence like two petals of a flower.

Presence of International Agencies in Arakan:

However, in Arakan which has been tormented decades after decades by the military rulers during the long 46 years of Reign of Terror, the matter of restoration of human rights of Rohingyas can not be imagined without the presence of monitoring agencies of international bodies including the UNHCR and ILO who must have full access to each and every corner of Arakan to see for themselves what is going on on the people of Arakan as well as the Rohingyas. They must have full freedom to carry out their international mandate and also to monitor all the situations which have been going on in reality.

Furthermore, the authorities must abrogate all black laws which serve as the tools for the violations of human rights against the civilians including the Rohingyas and they must fully comply with the UN Declaration of Human Rights and other covenants like Health ICESCR (International Covenant of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights) where as per Article 12.1: everyone has the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, Shelter ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights) where as per Article 12.1: everyone lawfully within the territory of a State shall, within that territory, have the right to liberty of movement and freedom to choose his residence and Livelihood ICESCR where as per Article 6.1: everyone has the right to work, which includes the right of everyone to the opportunity to gain his living by work which he freely chooses or accepts, and will take appropriate steps to safeguard this right.

Most importantly, the authority must abolish the practice of forced labor in compliance with the 1930 International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention on Forced Labor and as per the recommendation of the ILO, the government must repeal the sections of the Village and Towns Acts that legally sanctions the conscription of labor. The government also must protect the Children's rights in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991.Children must not be forced to work under any circumstances and they must abrogate all written or unwritten rules which stand as the stumbling block for Rohingya students to get education. They must give up all practices which compel Rohingyas to go gradually away from their ethnic culture, heritage as well as language. All Rohingya students must have their right to retain their own Rohingya name and no Rohingya student will be compelled to adopt a Burmese name which, in fact, has been serving as a tool for the military rulers in their way to Burmanization.

Presence of NGOs in Arakan:

Arakan which has turned out to be a land of restlessness, antagonism, discrimination, persecution, anarchy and disappointment during the long military rule and where the peace-loving people pass their life in utmost grief and distress, fear and frustration, the voice of restoration of human rights of Rohingyas can be a far cry there, if the NGOs are not allowed to work for alleviation of sufferings of all the hapless people including the Rohingyas.

It is the NGOs which can heal at least some level of scars caused by despotic rule over the decades pushing tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children towards disasters. Through their grassroot level activities, the NGOs can play a significant role in changing the life of the distressed human beings from the wounds caused by the systemic oppression, socio-economic and political exploitation and social anarchy as well as the havocs of the communal violence.

The NGOs can play a major role in restoration of human rights of Rohingyas if they are allowed to work in Arakan through multidimensional programmes like emergency relief, food security and agriculture, infrastructure and health and education. Under the emergency relief programme, the NGOs can concentrate to the internally displaced Rohingyas. They can pay special attention and concentration to reduce mortality and morbidity and help the distressed people to return to normalcy and let them understand the fact that human rights are not the mercy of a state and that as per Vienna Conference on Human Rights in 1993 which clearly states that "States declare that human rights are the legitimate concern of the international community", human rights obligations are voluntarily confirmed obligations of states or nations towards populations within their jurisdiction, and this obligates States or nations to have consistent efforts and strive towards a complete spectrum of human rights - starting from an effective 'right to health,' within the availability of States resources to the absolute prohibition of torture.

Presence of human rights groups in Arakan:

Another important aspect for the restoration of human rights of Rohingyas is to allow different human rights organizations to be present in Arakan where human rights violations have turned out to be a common phenomenon during the decades long military rule.

In fact, Human Rights and Human Survival are inalienably linked. In concrete terms, the endurance of the society is a human right. But this basic human right to live with peace and security, liberty and equality and prosperity cannot be rejuvenated by any govemment faced with all those factors which endanger the peaceful living of human society. Violence can be termed as one sort of violation of norms of human behaviour recognised by all civilised people of the world. By spreading violence and panic among people, it hits the very roots of democracy. So every society cherishing the democratic way of life is bound to fight any sort of violence and cause panic. Therefore, the implementation of human rights had come to be acknowledged internationally as a major concern and essential in the development of not only the individual but also the nation and, ultimately the world.

So, there can be no meaningful improvement in the restoration of human rights of Rohingyas without the presence of human rights organizations in Arakan who can serve as the watchdogs of all sorts of violations of human rights, whether that violation comes from government, from terrorists, from criminals, or from self-appointed messiahs operating under the cover of politics or religion.

Presence of News Media in Arakan:

Robert Heinlein said, secrecy is the beginning of tyranny. It is the news media which mainly bring most of the secrets to the surface. A journalist witnesses an incident, films it and releases it and thus opens the eye of people, organizations and governments as well as the international community through his report, his video and other online technologies about the human rights violations and thus, he brings a change in the society and in a nation.

The news media play an immense role in the restoration of human rights of a community or a nation. It has an unimaginable power to organize the "people power" against any injustice and tyranny and build a culture of freedom. Moreover, the role that the broadcast media plays in changing the face of a society is beyond description. Because of satellite links which now enable broadcast news organizations to originate live programming from any part of the globe, the entire world is becoming one "global village" as Marshall McLuhan said or as the famous line of Shakespeare "all the world's a stage".

Nevertheless, in a country which the military rulers have turned into a secret state of terror where human rights are constantly violated and where the guns of the army point out the way of life of the people, the voice for the presence of human rights groups or news media organizations in Arakan is a far cry. It is only a democratic atmosphere which can pave the way to stop human rights violations against Rohingyas and bring an end to the chapter of genocide and ethnic cleansing operations against them. #
