Iran-Tehran: Police and protesters clash in Sadeghiyeh Square!

The moral police arrested a young girl for improper "hejab". She resisted the arrest and several police officers beat her with their batons violently. Her face and body was soaked in blood. Angry Witnesses came to her rescue and protested against the police by shouting slogans against the police force and the Presdient of Islamic Republic and burning trash bins in the streets.

Hundreds of anti-riot police and firetrucks were dispatched to the scene and shouts were fired to disburse the crowd...

The demonstrators are shouting, "Islamic Government, We don't want, We don't want"

[ALOCHONA] Moeen's extraordinary India visit and govt's approval of security cage on border

Moeen's extraordinary India visit and govt's approval of security cage on border
The unelected government of Fakhruddin Ahmed has visibly swallowed the Indian proposal of constructing a 'security cage' on both sides of the border to resume direct passenger train service between Dhaka and Kolkata – a humiliating proposal that the previous government had refused to accept. The people of Bangladesh have always been in favour of maintaining close contact with the people of India, with whom they share common history and culture in many areas, and therefore welcome the perceived train services.
The people of Bangladesh, however, rightly felt uncomfortable with the Indian idea of passing the trains through a 'box-type' cage to be constructed on the 'no man's land, which, the Indian negotiators believe, would deter illegal immigration, if there is any. Bangladesh had, therefore, rightly been refusing to entertain the humiliating proposal. Subsequently, the agreement of the direct train service, initiated in July 2001 and almost finalised in July 2007, did not materialise. Suddenly, Fakhruddin's cabinet approved the Indian proposal on Monday! Notably, India has direct train services with its arch rival Pakistan, but the trains do not pass through any cages.

What, however, is especially noteworthy is that the cabinet approval of the Indian proposal came the day General Moeen U Ahmed, chief of our armed forces, which propelled Fakhruddin to power, began his extraordinary visit to New Delhi, the capital of India. The visit appears extraordinary because the general, who is believed to have been the prime backer of the otherwise unpopular government of Fakhruddin Ahmed, is scheduled to hold talks with a couple of Indian cabinet members including foreign minister Pranab Mukharjee, and also the chief minister of the Indian state of West Bengal, Buddhadev Bhattacharya. This is alarming. In ordinary visits, our general is not supposed to have official talks with foreign politicians, particularly when the two countries involved have quite a good number of disputed issues to be resolved through political negotiations.

That the visit is an extraordinary one is also reflected in the political enthusiasm of the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, who had reportedly visited prior to the general's departure for Delhi, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Zillur Rahman, the acting president of the Awami League. None of the parties involved clearly told our people as to what transpired in those meetings, creating a lot of concerns in the public mind as regards what issues would come up during general Moeen's discussions with Indian policy makers. The concern has further deepened after our government's approval of the Indian proposal to construct the controversial security cage on no man's land immediately before the visit. Are the unelected incumbents passing any message to the Indian political establishment? We do not know.

However, what we know is that the hegemonic powers, regional or global, usually like weak governments in the neighbourhood as the hegemon finds it easy to settle disputed issues with the weak to the former's advantage. And the weakest government is the one which is not elected by the people, as is the case in Bangladesh today. The weak governments, if ambitious to cling to power without people's mandate for long, usually seek cooperation of the hegemonic powers, and at times they succeed in it, albeit at the cost of national interests. We only hope that general Moeen's extraordinary visit to Delhi would not cost us very dearly, and expect that he upon his return would apprise us all, at the least, of what issues he discussed with Indian leaders, and what are the possible implications of those discussions for our people.

[mukto-mona] America's Unfaithful Faithful - a Time article

Dear Mukto-mona members:

Please read this interesting article if you could on how Americans are converting from their religion, which was given at their birth.

The last sentence in the article reveals that Hindus and Mormons in America have one thing in common.  Members of both groups like to marry within the same religion.  Therefore, my view long held view that Hindus are more open minded than their Muslims counterpart regarding theirs strict adherence to religion.

Sincerely,

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

-------------
Time
America's Unfaithful Faithful
By David Van Biema
Mon Feb 25, 5:35 PM ET

A major new survey presents perhaps the most detailed picture we've yet had of which religious groups Americans belong to. And its big message is: blink and they'll change. For the first time, a large-scale study has quantified what many experts suspect: there is a constant membership turnover among most American faiths. America's religious culture, which is best known for its high participation rates, may now be equally famous (or infamous) for what the new report dubs "churn."

The report, released today by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, is the first selection of data from a 35,000- person poll called the U.S. Religious Landscape Survey. Says Pew Forum director Luis Lugo, Americans "not only change jobs, change where they live, and change spouses, but they change religions too. We totally knew it was happening, but this survey enabled us to document it clearly."

According to Pew, 28% of American adults have left the faith of their childhood for another one. And that does not even include those who switched from one Protestant denomination to another; if it did, the number would jump to 44%. Says Greg Smith, one of the main researchers for the "Landscape" data, churn applies across the board. "There's no group that is simply winning or simply losing," he says. "Nothing is static. Every group is simultaneously winning and losing."

For some groups, their relatively steady number of adherents over the years hides a remarkable amount of coming and going. Simply counting Catholics since 1972, for example, you would get the impression that its population had remained fairly static - at about 25% of adult Americans (the current number is 23.9%). But the Pew report shows that of all those raised Catholic, a third have left the church. (That means that roughly one out of every 10 people in America is a former Catholic, and that ex-Catholics are almost as numerous as the America's second biggest religious group, Southern Baptists.) But Catholicism has made up for the losses by adding converts (2.6% of the population) and, more significantly, enjoying an influx of new immigrants, mostly Hispanic.

An even more extreme example of what might be called "masked churn" is the relatively tiny Jehovah's Witnesses, with a turnover rate of about two-thirds. That means that two-thirds of the people who told Pew they were raised Jehovah's Witnesses no longer are - yet the group attracts roughly the same number of converts. Notes Lugo, "No wonder they have to keep on knocking on doors."

The single biggest "winner," in terms of number gained versus number lost, was not a religious group at all, but the "unaffiliated" category. About 16% of those polled defined their religious affiliation that way (including people who regarded themselves as religious, along with atheists and agnostics); only 7% had been brought up that way. That's an impressive gain, but Lugo points out that churn is everywhere: even the unaffiliated group lost 50% of its original membership to one church or another.

The report does not speculate on the implications of its data. But Lugo suggests, "What it says is that this marketplace is highly competitive and that no one can sit on their laurels, because another group out there will make [its tenets] available" for potential converts to try out. While this dynamic "may be partly responsible for the religious vitality of the American people," he says, "it also suggests that there is an institutional loosening of ties," with less individual commitment to a given faith or denomination.

Lugo would not speculate on whether such a buyer's market might cause some groups to dilute their particular beliefs in order to compete. There are signs of that in such surveys as one done by the Willow Creek megachurch outside Chicago, which has been extremely successful in attracting tens of thousands of religious "seekers." An internal survey recently indicated much of its membership was "stalled" in their spiritual growth, Lugo allowed that "it does raise the question of, once you attract these folks, how do you root them within your own particular tradition when people are changing so quickly."

The Pew report has other interesting findings; the highest rates for marrying within one's own faith, for example, are among Hindus (90%) and Mormons (83%).

[mukto-mona] The ultimate litmus test for freethinkers a la N.N. Sarker

The ultimate litmus test for freethinkers a la N. N. Sarker

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

"If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the
corridor in the other direction. -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer in 'The Way
to Freedom'

Lately, Mr. N.N. Sarker has devised the litmus test that will set
apart bona fide freethinkers from the ones who pretend to be a
freethinker. The test is a very simple one. Just ask the person who
is masquerading as a freethinker a simple question. Do you support
the candidacy of Barack Obama for the highest public office in the
US? If the unequivocal answer is yes, then you are not a true
freethinker. If the answer is a negative one, then by golly you are
a true and tested freethinker.

For the life of him Mr. Sarker could not figure out how a true
freethinker could support Senator Barack Obama. Many pretending
freethinker in Mukto-mona including this scribe fell victim to Mr.
Sarker's broadside. Just by asking a simple question Mr. Sarker has
unmasked us all! I don't know what to make out of Mr. Sarker's
recent discovery. Should we exit Mukto-mona en masse? Or, should we
stand our ground and prove that his simplistic assertion has no meat
whatsoever?

Many of us here in Mukto-mona discussed the candidacy of Barack
Obama. None of us had factored in the senator's ancestry. America
is becoming a patch quilt nation of immigrants and the ones who
descended from immigrants. Therefore, many folks believe that a
biracial human being becoming the president could bring all the folks
from diverse genetic makeup together. It is about the time that a
non-white person becomes the president. What is so wrong in Obama's
candidacy? Or is that our caste system's curse that Mr. Sarker has a
problem with a biracial man?

Interestingly, the British had left South Asian subcontinent nearly
sixty years ago but still many of us subconsciously believe in the
supremacy of a white man. Ms. Farida Majid had written about it
rather eloquently in her post; to add more will be utterly redundant.

Mr. Sarker took upon himself this ornery task of defining who is a
true freethinker solely based on one criterion. I wish him a lot of
luck. For, there will be others who will point to his platitudinous
remarks.

Following is a news item from a Business Only Newspaper of Pakistan like American Wall Street Journal. Can we have a viable Stock Exchange in Bangladesh to attract Foreign Investors to our Companies?

Pakistan has benefitted from Foreign Investors a lot and since US backing of Pakistan started in 2004 Pak Stock Market has been the top Stock Market of the world rising 900% mostly on Foreign Investments. Can the Govt do something about this or try to learn something from Pakistan?

Can we do some stuff ourselves instead of waiting for Allah to do it and hoping to be in JannuT in our after-life?

Thousands of Bangladeshis abroad would love to invest in Bangladesh Stock Exchange if some trust factor was created in their minds.

Inflow of $78.96 million portfolio investment in a single day
BUSINESS RECORDER, Karachi REPORT

KARACHI (February 25 2008): A massive inflow of portfolio investment in the country's equity market was witnessed on a single day on February 22 as $78.964 million came in country mainly from USA and UK. On the other hand, an outflow of $11.644 million was seen on the said date and the net flow was recorded at $67.320 on the end of the week.

According to State Bank of Pakistan data, out of the total inflow, $64.352 million came from the USA, $13.714 million from UK, $494,000 from Germany and $404,000 from Hong Kong on the said date while an outflow of $8.12 million was witnessed by UK, $1.611 by USA, $1.345 by Hong Kong, $545,000 by Switzerland and $23,000 by Singapore on February 22.

The data shows that as many as $281.545 million of foreign investment came in the country's equity market during the current month till February 22, while $39.058 million were withdrawn by the foreign investors during this period.

Analysts are of the view that holding of peaceful general elections and improving law and order situation in the country invited fresh foreign investment in the equity market as the foreign investors came back to invest here on their expectations that political stability will come after elections.

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Gen.Moyeen's New Brand of Democracy !

For a Better BangladeshDear Alochok,

My personal feelings about Gen. Moyeen is, he is the most polite general in Pak-Bangla history of 60 years. A bit too democratic I think. Thats why there are some problem in controlling(corruption, price hike etc). I wished at least he would be strong and strict at least for a certain period. But he is not even 1% of Ayub Khan. People talking, writing everything like a normal time. They are not afraid of writing against him. But again these people want to compare him with Ayub Khan. Whats a ridiculous comparison! Do you think you would have courage to write even one sentence against him if he were Ayub Khan? Do you really ever heard how Ayub Khan ruled this country? I guess you didnt came to the world that time. Please read the history!

Only future has the right answer what General Moyeen will do! Uncertain prediction is useless. We better judge after their performance. It can be appreciation or it can be depreciation.

Best regards,

Haroon Rashid

Gen.Moyeen's New Brand of Democracy !

The Father of the CTG, General Moyeen said that Bangladesh needed a new brand of democracy. Seems to me the ghost of Ayub Khan landed on his shoulders. Mr Khan introduced basic democracy-a blend of military and civil wines. Gen. Moyeen is heading towards his Pakistani Master's vision. I feel very sorry for Prof. Muzaffar Ahmed when he said that Gen. Moyeen saved the country on Jan. 11 last year. Has the emergency saved the nation? from what? corruption?it is going on at the same or higher scale because now the risk is high. Economy already hit the rock bottom, virtually no diplomacy. There is an exception. We have achieved a lot by surrendering to India. The General to going to India shortly to pay respect to his foreign masters in New Delhi. We will wait to see what he will bring back from Delhi.

By the by, I also see a similarity between Gen. Moyeen and Gen.(retd) Ershad. The former has started writing proses but the latter started writing poems before overthrowing a democratically elected government. Gen. Moyeen often talk about discipline and against corruption. Did he take formal permission from the government to publish his two books which are actually collections of political Essays? As a government servant (sorry the CTG is a servant of him) If he did not, it means if you have a gun, you don't need any permissions. The Gun is mighter than the pen. May Allah save Bangladesh from these vultures.

[ALOCHONA] During our darkest hour it was India and Soviet Union at our side ...

Dear Mr. Ayubi

I do contest to your contention that we should be diligent and carefull handling the friend(killer Tiger) but I dont subcribe the point to submit for everything and anything. No absolutely no.

Of course as experienced and economy wise big we can fall back for suggestion, assitance and support to build our nationain the line of patriotism and wisdom and resilience the indians have

But being physically weak  does not give the big brother the open licence to kill and kill Bangladeshis on everyday basis by their Bestial Security Force(BSF).
Don't you think we have the  right to opose to these killing and  for dishonouring many many agreements signed by the power ????????????????????????????

Yes, we have right and we should.  But for such strong steps first of all we need the politics of Bangladesh to be absolutely Bangladesh oriented and no foriegn elements of Chamchami be alowed. We must have national consensus crossing party aim and that be on patritism basis.

Cheers and Amities

Faruque Alamgir

[ALOCHONA] Still there is time if you have not signed (electronic signature) the Petition yet

Change Bangladesh Launches Global Campaign for Accountable Democracy in Bangladesh

Little Rock, AR, February 21st, 2008 – Change Bangladesh is pleased to launch a global Campaign for Accountable Democracy in Bangladesh (CADB). The campaign will create a grassroots movement to compel the major political parties of Bangladesh to embrace and implement internal reforms towards democracy, accountability, zero tolerance for corruption and a law abiding political culture.

CADB plans to create the grassroots movement through the following strategies:
1.    Collect 10,000 signatures via an online petition by June 20008
2.    Educate and engage through online and offline media
3.    Partner with like-minded organizations to build momentum
4.    Present the petition for change to the major political parties of Bangladesh during summer 2008

The campaign for accountable democracy is being launched on historic February 21st, 2008 to mark the beginning of a new struggle. Just as February 21st, 1952 marked the beginning of the struggle for Bangladeshi nationalism, today marks a new struggle amongst all Bangladeshis to reclaim our nation and destiny from the slavery of corruption, political violence and kleptocracy.

Bangladesh today, is challenged with a rare opportunity to reform and rebuild its institutions of democracy, at the nucleus of which lies the political parties. Since there is no alternative to democratic governance, there is also no substitute to reforming the political parties for altruistic service to the teeming millions.

True democracy will not see the light of the day unless the politicians adhere to some fundamental rule of politics and governance.

•    Practice intra-party Democracy: Hold regular elections for grassroots and top level party leadership positions. Introduce term limits for party officials. Highly committed bright youngsters should be identified for future leadership positions.

•    Accountability: Elect, appoint and promote party leaders based on performance and meritocracy. Under performing party officials should be demoted or removed from party hierarchies.

•    Zero Tolerance for Corruption: There should be zero tolerance for corruption and unethical practices. "Politics of looting" has shamed us worldwide.

•    Adhering to the rule of law: Political parties' modus operandi must at all times be strictly followed. Reconciliation must replace confrontation with either rival political parties or the government. Political parties must stop illegal hartal, political violence, and boycott of parliamentary sessions as instruments of defiance and disagreement on issues of difference and discrepancy.

[mukto-mona] Pakistan polls and politics

Pakistan polls and politics

Pakistan's political parties should be careful not to repeat the past. That is possible if people in power respect the right of the opposition to political space. The rights of minorities — political, regional and religious — have to be protected if democratic institutions are to flourish.
A vibrant civil society that values its independence from the centres of power, is necessary. The lawyers' movement and the support it received from the people indicate that a small but influential civil society exists in Pakistan. The political elite should recognise its importance and respect its independence. Building democracy is a long race. Elections are only a good start.
Polls are a process to elect people's representatives to legislate and run public institutions according to law and with respect to democratic traditions. The challenge before Sharif and Zardari is to put aside party interests and, together and urgently, build those democratic institutions in Pakistan. They could begin, as Sharif has promised, with the restoration of an independent judiciary and by ensuring the independence of the Election Commission, which this time has supervised a fair election.
Mass movements in the past have forced dictators to pass on the reins of power to elected officials in Pakistan. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, his daughter Benazir and Sharif himself were beneficiaries of the Pakistani people's preference for democratic leaders over army officers.
But all, unfortunately, failed to live up to the expectation of the people. The armed forces capitalised on their failures to seize power and present themselves as an alternative to the seeming chaos and corruption of democracy. However, Musharraf's tenure should convince all that generals do not necessarily deliver discipline, efficiency or stability. Under a succession of generals, Pakistan has slipped into chaos while religious fundamentalists have begun to threaten its very existence.

[ALOCHONA] Strong government or humble government?

I've always heard two different approaches from my
friends and others. One is strong government, summed
as "Mairer upore oshudh nai". This also means
unaccountable government.

The other approach is a government that listens to and
talks to people and tries to mediate and build
bridges. What is known as "neutral arbiter." But most
people think this approach won't work in Bangladesh.
But has it been tried?

Here's a good article from Gopal Sengupta where he
makes a case that "strong government" approach has
failed and its time to try the other approach.

Strength or Humility? Time to Change Caretaking
Approach

[mukto-mona] Gathering of Indian Muslims declare terrorism un-Islamic

Coming from Darul Uloom Deoband, one of the most respected and oldest schools of Islamic religious studies in South Asia, this news will sorely displease our own Jamaati and Islam-pasand brothers and sisters of Bangladesh.  They will probably all scream and tear up the cyber space fuming against Indian conspiracy to undermine the sovereignty of Bangladesh, anti-Islamic 'jehad' of Farida Majid, or call it a Zionist organization paid Islamophobic event.

Please read the news and reflect upon the idiotic tolerance of religion-based fascism of Jamaat in BD politics.

Gathering of Indian Muslims declare terrorism un-Islamic

A large gathering of Muslim scholars representing different schools of thoughts and Muslims organizations unanimously declared that terrorism has no place in Islam and all terror activities are un-Islamic.
The anti-terrorism conference organized by Darul Uloom Deoband and attended by about 10,000 scholars from all over India issued a declaration at the end of the conference, here today. "Killing of innocents is not compatible with Islam. It is anti-Islamic," read the declaration.
Declaration stated that "Islam is a religion of mercy for all humanity. Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and terrorism. It has regarded oppression, mischief, rioting and murder among severest sins and crimes."
Various fatwas have been issued in the past against terrorism but this is the first time that such a large gathering of scholars have came out strongly against terrorism. This is also a first attempt to define terrorism in light of Islam.
