Re: [ALOCHONA] Chatra League: Ready to fight on campus

Can any one clarify the reason why Chatro League and/or Chatro Dall against the agitation of redistribution of the quota of BCS???

May be many of us know the reason...... These quota especially Muktijoddha quota (wow 30%) is the gate way to enter BCS job for these above mentioned vested quarters (student politicians). So, by any means they will try to depress the agitation.

General students wake up and try by any means to work against the vested quarters of the campus. These vested quarters are killing our nation by varity of ways. Especially, they are the right hands of Hasina-Khaleda-Tarek and .................................

The striking students of Dhaka University have postponed their agitation programmes that they called to press home the demand for rationalisation of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) quota system as the Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed assured to consider the demand.

After meeting Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, DU Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz yesterday informed the agitated students about the assurance. After that the students announced the postponement of their agitation till March 15.

The students called the three-day strike in all public universities and university colleges on Feb 25 to press home the demand. However, all examinations were out of the purview of the programme.

No classes were held at the Dhaka University on the second day of the three-day strike yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) brought a stick procession to protest against the strike triggering tensions on the campus. The BCL alleged that the Islami Chhatra Shibir in the name of quota movement wants to destabilise the campus by calling strike and hampering the congenial atmosphere of the University.

Currently in the BCS examination system, total 55 percent of appointment is made under four quotas including freedom fighters quota (30 percent), women quota and district quota (10 per cent each) and indigenous quota (five percent).

Some maulanas advised the rulers to declare the indigenous peoples of India
dhimmies, but the rulers did not accept it. Because that could not be
implemented as the local people vastly outnumbered the invaders and their
cohorts by about a factor of twenty in those days. Maulana Moududi might not
have read the history of India during the Muslim rule thoroughly enough.
Even if they succeeded in making the Indians dhimmies, the Indians would
give rise to another class of Mawlas(converts) as happened in other lands
conquered by the sword of Islam.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Another witness against the officers who ran Argentina's "dirty war" on opponents of the country's military dictatorship has turned up dead.
Police found the body of retired army Lt. Col. Paul Alberto Navone on Monday in the central Argentine city of Ascochinga with a gunshot to the head and a handgun nearby.
Police also said they'd located what may have been a suicide note, but Navone's death is just the latest in a wave of mysterious deaths and kidnappings of witnesses in the prosecutions of former officials in Argentina's brutal 1976-1983 dictatorship.
Like many other Argentines, former political prisoner Carlos Lordkipanidse, who spent more than two years in a military concentration camp, said he thought that those seeking to stop the prosecutions murdered Navone.
Last year, Lordkipanidse testified at the kidnapping and torture trial of one of his old tormenters, former Coast Guard officer Hector Febres, only to see the 66-year-old official poisoned to death four days before his verdict was to be read.
Like Navone, Febres reportedly was prepared to speak about one of the dictatorship's most macabre chapters, the abductions of hundreds of babies who were born to jailed or missing dissidents. In all, 30,000 people — many of them leftist guerrillas and activists — were killed or simply disappeared.
"Navone's death was in the same line as Febres'," Lordkipanidse said. "I spent two and a half years with these people, and I know how they think. Before there's a problem, they take care of it. They take preventative action. If Febres had spoken, he would have created an enormous problem for a lot of powerful people."
The deaths of Febres and Navone followed the suspected kidnappings of two former political prisoners who'd testified in other trials. On Sept. 18, 2006, Jorge Julio Lopez disappeared near his house in the provincial capital of La Plata, and he remains missing. Three months later, Luis Angel Gerez also disappeared, but he turned up two days later in a suburb of Buenos Aires, the national capital.
The violence has marred a historic series of trials that many Argentines had hoped would finally bring justice to a country still split by its bloody history of military repression.
In 2005, the country's Supreme Court struck down amnesties that had protected officers suspected of participating in the persecution, and trials began the next year with the enthusiastic support of then-President Nestor Kirchner. Some 1,100 cases are being investigated, and more than 200 of the accused have been detained.
The first trial sparked by the court decision ended with the conviction and life sentence of former police Officer Miguel Etchecolatz on charges of kidnapping, torturing and killing prisoners. The trial was marred by the disappearance of Lopez, a key witness.
Three trials later, the body count has grown, and many worry that the process is in jeopardy. Witnesses have reported receiving death threats, and some are under police protection.
"The government thought it could close all this history and say, 'We Argentines are finished with this,' " said lawyer Luis Bonomi, who represented plaintiffs in the Febres case. "Well, it's turned out another way, and we've opened a new chapter."
Investigators' failure to find the perpetrators of any of the suspected kidnappings and deaths has sparked suspicion and fueled conspiracy theories blaming the crimes on everyone from the government to ex-guerrillas to former military officers.
The lack of information about Lopez more than 17 months after his disappearance has drawn the most outrage, with protesters filling the streets of La Plata on the 18th day of every month to demand answers.
"You can't put the investigation in the hands of the police when it's the police who tortured and are being investigated," said Eduardo Castellanos, a former political prisoner who testified against Etchecolatz.
Gerez's case also remains unsolved, with many suspecting that the national government faked his disappearance and reappearance to win popular support. The witness, who's said he knows nothing about his kidnappers' identities, turned up a day after Kirchner demanded his release on national television.
Federal legislator Nora Ginzburg, a conservative opposition leader, has twice called for a congressional inquiry into the Lopez investigation only to be turned down by legislative allies of Kirchner and his wife, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the current president.
"We need the first and last names of the people behind this," Ginzburg said. "People are saying this is all the doing of the repressors, but there's no proof of this because there's been no investigation. For some reason, the government has no interest in finding out."
Human rights activists accuse the government of doing the bidding of still-powerful military leaders. They point out that the four trials opened by the Supreme Court decision haven't touched any military officials, instead targeting former police and Coast Guard officers and a police chaplain.
"We're dealing with forces that still defend what they did," said attorney Guadalupe Godoy, who represented Lopez. "They're the ones who don't want to follow this path."
Investigators admitted frustration with the slow pace of the inquiries but said that their work continued, with some 200 investigators on the Lopez case alone. There's a $320,000 reward for information leading to Lopez's whereabouts, and some 2 million anonymous tips have arrived.
"Every time I see a picture of Julio Lopez, it tells me I'm not a magician," said Paulo Starc, the investigations sub-secretary for the province of Buenos Aires, where Gerez and Lopez disappeared. "We can't just come up with the answers overnight."
Five people have been charged in connection with Febres' death, which medical examiners say was caused by a dose of cyanide four times the amount needed to kill a person his size.
The defendants are Febres' wife and two grown children, who've been accused of helping to hide key evidence, and two Coast Guard officials charged with participating in the murder. Investigators still don't know who administered the cyanide to Febres around midnight on Dec. 9.
In a report on the case, federal Judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado said that Febres died on International Human Rights Day and hours before Fernandez de Kirchner was sworn in as president. In the judge's opinion, the killers most likely chose that date to send Argentines a message.
"Febres had information that, if it was revealed, could legally hurt other members of the military," the judge wrote. "Because of this, his silence had to be secured."

Not to be cynical or anything, but if these kind of trials, were to happen regarding the administration of the "Shrub" and Darth Vader, we to would see many of the same things happening in our country. Political and civil repression are about to happen in our country, if we the people do not stand up against the bill HR 1955. It passed the House by a vote of 404-6 and is in the Senate right now. If you have any idea of the horror that can be perpetrated in the name of "Security and Freedom," then you must as an active and patriotic person speak to your Senators and flood their offices with emails against this abomination of a bill that will severely curtail your rights to speech and thought. You must also let your representative in the House know of your displeasure at their votes for this bill. We as Americans are in danger of losing the right to dissent and freely change this system now in place. Our country is in danger of becoming another repressive and despotic nation, just like the South American countries that thought they would never have this. Argentina has come a long way to making the leap towards true democracy, but will never make it there until the military is divested of all its power and a true accounting of the horrors that were committed by the Pinochet government are known. Among them are the stealing of thousands of babies that were given to families of the ruling class, the children of activists and dissidents who were murdered and were "disaparacida."
We activists, in the US must demand along with those of other nations that the Argentinian government come clean about the abuses of power that were committed in the name of "security," which is nothing more than a repression of the masses by those who think that they are better and more suited for the task of governing by dint of the "money."
Must we in America suffer the same fate as those of many if not all countries in South America? I would hope that there are those among us that will not allow this government to lower itself to the standard of a repressive and fascistic form of government.

American people, in general, are simplistic minded; they are naive.
They usually do not analyze things themselves; they often depend on
media to form their opinions on matters. Mr. Obama is a creation of
the media. He possesses great oratory skill that draws people and
media like that. As far as, contents of his speech, there are hope
and plenty of promises, which are essential to motivate American
public. Mr. Obama is the most liberal Senator in the Senate, and his
policy is based on the play book of the Socialist ideology. These
popular slogans can motivate general public quite easily. Nobody is
telling the public that this ideology is not designed to uplift the
poor because it will not survive without downtrodden people in the
society. It is designed to create more permanent underclass in the
society.

Bangladeshis are supporting Obama for this name and out of rage for
Bush, who is a real disaster for the Republican Party. He could be a

You're absolutely right about the Mughals and their rejection/disregard of
shariah and most orthodoxy that has plagued the Muslim world since shariah
was cast in concrete by Shafii and the rest. Muslims would do well to revisit
that period of their history which shows conclusively that peaceful
coexistence is not only possible but fairly easy if one discards the yoke of shariah.
Akbar, by far the most enlightened Muslim ruler in history, knew something
today's zealots do not. In fact he was ahead of his time by a couple of
centuries compared to Europe with his concept of "universal peace" ( sulh-i kull) and
"love for all men." It wasn't until the 18th century that enlightened
rulers in Europe started to do what Akbar did, i.e. abolish established but
undesirable practices in the name of a higher morality even when they had religious
sanction. He proceeded to do away with all religious discrimination against
non-Muslims including the jizya. What he did was nothing short of rejecting
outright taqlid and sharia as the only way to God and replacing them with an
Islam that was humane and open to fellowship with all faiths. And, surprise,
surprise, he had both Muslims and Hindus eating out of his hand. And it wasn't
just that one exceptional individual, that philosophy of tolerance that
exceeded anything the Ottomans did with millet and kanun, started with Babur and
continued under Jehangir and Shah Jahan. People who claim that there was
never a period of tolerant Islam and that reforming Islam is impossible do not
know history. Unfortunately, this includes most Muslims today..

A book compiled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's daughter belittling characters of Ramayana has snowballed into a major controversy with the BJP threatening nation-wide stir against it for it "hurting Hindu sentiment".

The book prescribed for second year undergraduate students of the Delhi University dubs Hanuman as the "henchman" of Lord Ram and calls him a "tiny monkey". At one place it portrays Sita as the daughter of Ravana and at another place it accuses Hanuman and Ravana of seducing Sita.

These "derogatory references" are contained in an article titled 'Three hundred Ramayanas: Five examples and three thoughts on translation' that forms part of the book compiled by Prime Minister's daughter, Upinder Singh, who is a professor of ancient history in Delhi University.

"The book has assaulted the religious sentiments of Hindus. This is not tolerable. We would like it to be removed from the course. Else, we would be forced to take it to the streets," BJP's deputy leader in Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra said.

Maintaining that the BJP was not against freedom of expression, Malhotra said his party did not want the book to be banned, but only withdrawn from the curriculum.

The article that has agitated many Hindu outfits talks about Ravana conceiving Sita as a result of eating the fruit given by Lord Shiva, which was for his wife Mandodri. Eventually, it says, Ravana gave birth to Sita through nasal sneeze (Sita meaning sneeze in Kannada) and out of public shame left Sita in the fields of king Janak!

[ALOCHONA] Politcians: Almost all are over 60!

Dear All,

I am reading news from Bangladesh and finding that most of the political leaders in Bangladesh are in health crises. Some one is either a heart patient, or has kidney problem, high pressure or other diseases. I am not saying anything bad to them but they are not mentally and physically fit to run the country. Moreover, most of them are above 60 years old, no age discrimination here. I am not saying that old is not gold but I think that Bangladesh needs leaderships from young and middle age people.

I think that it might become a leadership crises in Bangladesh in the next 5-10 years if new blood is not introduced in the parties (AWL, BNP, JP, etc). I think that we should think about this situation even though we are so much busy with the current events in Bangladesh.

Please do not take out any text from my whole comments. Many people can interpret same things in different way.

There will be a general election in Bangladesh and a political party will won that election, will form a government and will start running the country. What will happen to the main players of the present unique interim administration? Many of the charged and jailed corrupted politicians are definitely hoping that a newly elected government will review their cases and eventually all of them will be set free. This is a real possibility not a hypothetical one. These corrupted criminals who once thought themselves as invincible are wild shameless animals by nature and will not sit idle to take revenge on those people who made them to see the real face of dishonour and vulnerability when justice strikes. The real target will be Gen. Moin. What they can do to him? The new administration formed by the party of Haseena or Khaleda will have same grudge against Moin and will definitely try to punish him unless they have a reason to fear him.

If they need to fear Moin as the armed forces chief the democratic institutions will not flourish. In that case all the bugles and drums of democracy in Bangladesh will sound empty and illusory. Moin tried his best to crack the evils of politics although he played safe with the mullahs for some mysterious reasons. Looking at BNP as a party of the opportunists which thrived on corruption only does not represent the values and aspirations of the Bengali people. If they get power back in the next general election that will be a political counter insurgency. If Awami League comes to power with a new agenda they will need to re evaluate their strategy to continue rather than a policy of revenge. The hate mongers will hate to recognize the fact that India can play a very vital role to encourage political stability in Bangladesh. Many people are very short sighted and unscrupulous to accept the fact that a small and weaker nation is always over shadowed by its giant neighbour. Canada despite a very rich and resourceful nation had to adjust its policies with the United States to enjoy a friendly neighbour. A future government of Bangladesh must follow the principles of fruitful engagements with India.

1. Many thanks to Avijit for reading my e-mail although he failed to read my mail with due care. My e-mail was in response to Avijit's e-mail in which he correctly pointed out that there are people among the Muslims who support Obama just because he has Muslim background, and also there are people among the Hindus who do not support Obama because of the same reason. In other words these people are communally motivated in their judgment about Obama. I simply added that these people include atheists and "secularists" also. Please note that I have kept the word secularist within inverted commas. What does that mean? That means I don't consider these people to be a true secularists. Now come to the point of atheism. I still believe that all atheists are not necessarily humanists or are people with all human qualities. They can be cruel, mischievous, dishonest, and so on.

2. I have never said that atheism makes one a murderer. I simply know that you may find an atheist among the murderers.

3. Avijit is obviously right: an indoctrinated person cannot be a free thinker. In that sense Stalin obviously was not a free thinker. But what about Marx? Was his system of thoughts a product of free thinking?

4. I don't know what Avijit is trying to teach me. I don't remember when I have related free thinkers with religious fundamentalists. Have I ever asserted that fundamentalists cannot be found among the Buddhists and the spiritualists? What is the "obvious reason" he is talking about? I will appreciate if he kindly makes his instructions more clear.

The striking students of Dhaka University have postponed their agitation programmes that they called to press home the demand for rationalisation of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) quota system as the Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed assured to consider the demand.

After meeting Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, DU Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz yesterday informed the agitated students about the assurance. After that the students announced the postponement of their agitation till March 15.

The students called the three-day strike in all public universities and university colleges on Feb 25 to press home the demand. However, all examinations were out of the purview of the programme.

No classes were held at the Dhaka University on the second day of the three-day strike yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) brought a stick procession to protest against the strike triggering tensions on the campus. The BCL alleged that the Islami Chhatra Shibir in the name of quota movement wants to destabilise the campus by calling strike and hampering the congenial atmosphere of the University.

Currently in the BCS examination system, total 55 percent of appointment is made under four quotas including freedom fighters quota (30 percent), women quota and district quota (10 per cent each) and indigenous quota (five percent).

The Election Commission (EC) will announce schedule of elections to four city corporations next month and request the government to relax the state of emergency in this cities during the polls.

Disclosing this during the dialogue with three political parties, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda said the banning of pro-Islamic parties was not possible due to constitutional compulsion.

The EC held dialogue with Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rab), Jatiya Party (JP-Manju) and Ganatantri Party on electoral reforms.

The CEC termed the war criminals and religion-based politics parties very important and sensitive issues and said the EC cannot do anything that contravenes the Constitution and existing laws.

"Election Commission is not a forum to decide whether to keep out or not a political party having name of religion of the polls," he said advising leaders, who were pressuring for banning religion-based political partied to move to court of law to decide on the issue.

"Why you the like-minded persons do not file a writ in the High Court in this regard. No one will have anything to say if the court gives a reference," he said.

The CEC said the Commission is pondering over a suggestion from political parties to sponsor election campaign for them to cut campaign cost.

He said the Commission might try it experimentally on the eve of the City Corporation elections. "If it is successful, then we will think of it for the parliamentary elections as well," he said.

Elaborating the EC's position on banning political parties based on religion, Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Retd) Shakhawat Hossain said there is no democratic country in the world without a religion - based political party.

"Narendra Modi could not have become the Chief Minister of Gujrat or Lal Krishna Advani the Deputy Prime Minister of India if democracy did not allow religious political parties," he said adding, there are political parties like that of Christian Democratic Party in most of the countries in Europe.

Shakhawat Hossain said he felt hurt whenever it is being said about religion-based politics, as the matter is very sensitive.

The three political parties supported the EC-announced election roadmap. JP (Manju) and Gantantri Party made an identical demand for the EC to announce a specific date for the polls and JP asked for lifting the ban on indoor politics outside Dhaka.

Responding to the JP and Gantantri Party, the CEC said the EC will announce the date, but it will take some time.

Ganatantri Party President M Nurul Islam, however, said they did not speak against religion rather they spoke only about those who are doing business in the name of religion, committed war crimes, raped women, plundered and assisted the Pakistanis.

Later, Nurul Islam told reporters that there is practice of religion-based politics in different countries of the world and many crimes and killings are also being committed based on that.

Election Commissioner M Sohul Hussain and Brig Gen (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain, among others, were present at the dialogue.

Salam. I didn't get reply of my simple question- or may be I missed. Anyway, you reply has many aspects to be discussed, I will address one here. You said:- "Mughol rule had Shariah as their basis".

Here is why the fact is just opposite and how people fall victim of propaganda of power politics and patriarchy in the name of Islam.

1. Dr. Richard Eaton is one of the top Islamic scholars on Islam in India, specially in the Deccan and Bengal. He writes in his "The Rise of Islam and The Bengal Frontier" that Bengal-Mughals maintained (1) Deep touch with Chistee tarika, (2) Separation of religion and State and (C) Indifference to converting non-Muslims to Islam. 2. There were many Rajput (Hindu) wives of in Mughal kings. That is anti-Islamic for a Muslim. 3. Mughal emperors used to celebrate Hindu and even Farsi events like Holi and Nawroj (Tagore has a poem on the Pathan king in Mughal era Kedar Khan and Rajput queen - Hasan) - that is not allowed in Islam. 4. Dr. Teslim Chowdhury, Chair of History department of Ram Mohan Roy College in his "Modhyojuger Bharot" different pages of Vol 1 and 2 concludes that Mughal rule could never be religion-based, there is no similarity of Mughal rule with theocratic Sate- Aurungzeb imposed Jijiya tax on non-Muslims after long 21 years of his becoming the Emperor and stopped after 10 years (it is for his decades long war in the South India when he needed money and Bengal spplied most of it, so he declared Bengal as "Jannatul Belayed - heaven on earth - Hasan), Shahjahan had 110 and Aurangzeb had 105 non-Muslim Monsobders, Jahangeer had 51 and Aurangzeb had 160 Hindu beurocrats (Siraj in Bengal had Manik Chand, UmiChand, Ray Durlav, Raj Ballav, Kishna Ballav, Nanda Kumar, Jogot Sheth, Meer Madan, Mohon Lal etc crowding his Darbar - Hasan), they were used to liquor and women. 5. That having non-Muslim employees is not allowed in Islamic State is increasingly clear in Middle Eastern, Iran;s and Pakistan's examples, specially with most senior Justice Bhagaban Das who was constitutionally supposed to be the chief justice but jamatis banned him. Note, before Pakistan was infected by jamatis Justice Octavian Cornelius, a Catholic Christian, served as the Chief Justice for long 8 years (1960 - 1968) after Chief Justice Munir retired. 6. Why I am stressing on highly placed non-Muslim in Islamic State? Employing high rangking non-Muslim is against Islamic rule. Mawlana Muhiuddin records it in Islamic State in his Quran's translation page 198 - someone proposed Hj. Omar (RA) a non-muslim (who was expert in writing( to employ as his personal scriber. But Hj. Omar (RA) denied and said it would be against the Quran. History of Islamic Khelafat generally proves this. 7. Even Mawlana Mawdudi accepted the fact that Mughal rule was not Islamic. He grieved about it in his lecture in Pathancot (19, 20 & 21 April 1945) that (in his words) India would have been different if the Muslims who came from outside (as preachers and invaders like Mughals would present and establish Sharia-Islam in India. 8. Mughals ruled vast area but we don't see a single record of stoning to death of adulterers or amputing hands of thieves. It is not possible that those crimes were not committed or the criminals were never caught fo such long time in such vast area. The only one, questionably Sharia-related, death-sentence we get was of a Portugese. He converted to and then reconverted from Islam; he was killed by Aurungzeb not for apostasy but for spying on Mughals. 9. Our preachers in Bengal and India never imposed a single law as we see in past and present Sharia books. Indeed we see the family law all over Muslim word because men could beat wives, could marry at will, divorce at will, give half-inheritance, deprive their eye-witness in Sharia-courts, deprive their right to divorce on their own accord etc. These are documents - not my personal opinions. Mughal Rule (and Pre-Mughal Sultanate rule in India) was not even close to Islamic State. It is upto the readers to realize why it is claimed so and who claims it.
