[mukto-mona] Could the powerful political house of Clintons fall?

Could the powerful political house of Clintons fall?

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Unless a miracle happens on March 4, 2008 in the polling places scattered allover Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island, and Vermont, Senator Clinton's campaign for the White House may come to a screeching halt.  The states of Texas and Ohio are delegate rich; therefore, the candidates have a lot of stakes in those populous states.  There is this possibility that Senator Clinton may edge Senator Obama just by a few thousands votes in Ohio but again with the momentum growing by the day Senator Obama may clinch the victory there too.  The polls in Texas and Vermont favor Senator Obama to come out victorious while Ohio and Rhode Island are leaning towards Senator Clinton.

The Democratic Party's primaries divide the delegates in proportion to votes received by the candidates.  Thus, Senator Clinton will have a hard time to catch up with Senator Obama in delegates count.  The Clinton campaign knows this for a fact, but since Clintons are mighty powerful, politically speaking of course, no one is recommending Senator Clinton to accept the defeat and make rooms for Senator Obama to take on Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican candidate.

I read a news story just few days ago in the last week or so in February 2008 in which it was mentioned that as per Senator Obama if his campaign was lagging 100 delegates by now, he would been pressured by the  Party insiders to concede the primaries.  However, the Clintons are different.  Because of their stature within the Democratic Party no one is going to request Senator Clinton to accept the verdict given by millions of voters with grace.  They erroneously think that they are somewhat different from the rest of the Democrats.  This haughty nature of both Hillary and Bill Clinton is keeping the former's bid for the White House alive given the fact that Senator Obama enjoys an overwhelming support among the electorates.

The Clintons are professional politicians who never worked in private sector or anywhere else.  Hillary Clinton grew up in the suburb of Chicago in a middleclass family strongly tethered to Republican Party.  During 1964 presidential election when President Johnson was running for the office while still in the White House against arch conservative Senator Goldwater (Republican – Arizona), Hillary Clinton was 15 years old supporting the Republican ticket.  Her transformation to liberal politics took place in late 1960s when she was attended Wellesley College.  There she became an activist.  In 1972, she became a campaign worker for Senator George McGovern's bid to the White House.

On the other hand, President Bill Clinton grew up in rural settings in Hope, Arkansas.  He is essentially a self-made person who had to ride out economic storm because of family situation.  He attended Georgetown University for his undergraduate degree.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Clinton attended the prestigious Yale Law School before settling in Little Rock, Arkansas where Bill Clinton joined the state-level politics.  He ran for public office first as the Attorney General, which he won.  Later, he ran successfully for the office of Governor.  He was the governor of Arkansas for multiple terms.  In the late 1980s the Democrats saw that their party's nominee for the White House was unable to win the election because the party was relying on ultra-liberals when the national trend was to elect conservatives.  A handful of centrist Southern senators from Democratic Party formed a group, Democratic Leadership Council (LDC), promoting a southerner as the party's candidate in 1992.  Being a centrist Governor Bill Clinton fit the bill.  The LDC promoted Gov. Clinton's candidacy and the rest is history.  While serving as the president for 8 years the Clintons became very powerful.  Therefore, when Bill Clinton left office a plan was formed to promote Hillary Clinton for high political office.

In 2000, the Clintons chose New York to be the state where they would settle down after stepping down from the office.  The Clintons are very smart for they thought if Hillary Clinton would run for the White House, a liberal state with a big number of delegates and electoral votes would come handy.  To prepare herself for the big office, Hillary Clinton decided to run as a senator; she came out victorious in November 2000.  In the last eight years Senator Clinton did the homework and prepares herself for the Democratic Party's run for the highest office.  She served in the important committees, established key connections, and was not abashed letting others know that she would run for the White House in 2008.  She and her advisors thought that with her name recognition she would breeze through the primaries and she would become the presumptive nominee by the time Super Tuesday primaries are over.  Her campaign was flushed with funds and many veteran leaders from her party were throwing their weights on her candidacy.  However, very little did she know what was coming in her way to become the presumptive nominee of the party?

Senator Barack Obama and a few other Democratic Senators and governor also ran in the primaries but from the beginning it looks as if a freshman senator from Illinois would compete head-to-head with her to win the primaries.  Senator Clinton's campaign tried to portray her as a seasoned candidate who will be ready from day one to run the country.  On the other hand, Senator Obama's campaign decided to project their candidate as a leader who is wiser and who has a plan to bring the Americans together.  While Senator Clinton acted like a technocrat in her stumps or in a debate throwing numbers right and left, Senator Obama was delivering poetic speeches full up to the brim with aspirations.  His speeches were uplifting the spirit of his supporters who were attending the rally in droves.  He was able to form an alliance of voters from younger generations, American blacks, Caucasian with college degrees.  Many political pundits have opined that Senator Obama had started a movement the likes of which was never seen before.

Up until now (March 2, 2008) the Obama campaign has been very successful winning states after states in the primaries while garnering 100 or more elected delegates over Clinton.  Had this been reverse, as I mentioned it earlier, Obama would be asked to call it quits but since Senator Clinton is losing the contest no one had the gall to request her to quit.  Mathematically, it will be a daunting task for Hillary Clinton to beg more delegates because both the candidates are splitting the votes 50-50.  Therefore, going to Denver in the summer for the convention, Obama will have more elected delegates.  Even though the Clinton campaign does not see the outcome of the primaries this way, the Republicans are treating Obama as the presumptive candidate representing the Democratic Party.  Is it a small wonder that Senator Obama is being scrutinized not only by Clinton campaign but also by McCain campaign?

It is my prediction that once the Pennsylvania primary will be over by April 4, 2008 Senator Obama will come out victorious with more delegates than Senator Clinton.  It will be only then that many insiders of the Democratic Party will ask Senator Clinton to concede the race.

Over the years the Clintons have become a powerful political family in America.  They are privilege enough to think that they deserve to rule America in a dynastic fashion.  Many political pundits think that 8 years of stay in the White House was good enough for a family.  However, Clintons are exceptional who may think that this maxim hardly applies to them.  Nonetheless, Clintons are going to learn their lesson eventually.  They have made their marks already and they should allow a newcomer to take the leadership role.  I have a feeling that the voters who are tuned to Obama message are not only giving their seal of approval to the freshman senator, they are also sending a chilling message to the Clintons.  Perhaps it is about the time that Clintons take their overdue and much deserved retirement.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Is CTG better than Ershad?

CTS is worse than Ershad  for the same reason munafik are worse than kafir.

I don't want to explain more . understand why i interpret so per your position and  understanding.

Dear Alochok Sajjad

There are no shadows – the CTG is a partnership between Moeen and Fakhruddin. Both need each other. You don't like either of them anyway : )

Please don't bleed for your constitution today – it's been ravaged since 1971.

1. This CTG (Moeen + Fakhruddin) overthrew the previous CTG because it was a puppet of BNP and a defender of the status quo.

2. Moeen did terrorise Iajuddin – because Iajuddin let Tariq Zia demand that the Army help BNP in the next election.

3. The Constitution has no provision for a parliament of thieves.

4. Hawkers were illegally there, causing congestion and sanitation problems. The CTG was heavy handed but the principle is correct.

5. The economy is hardly destroyed. It can recover in every area within 2/3 years – political stability comes first.

6. The only foreigners who prefer Khaleda and Hasina to Fakhruddin are the bribe giving ones. FDI will rocket once the CTG agenda is complete.

7. I don't know about India. But these can all be corrected by the next elected, value based government.

8. BNP is being saved by the CTG. Rank and file are fine. What you see is the cost price of finally getting rid of Khaleda and Tariq.

9. Your democratic BNP and AL hit the world record books for corruption. Not the CTG.

10. Some bureaucrats have been arrested. The rest plus corrupt Army staff will be dealt with by the next elected, value based government.

11. Inflation and unemployment are indeed at an all time high. That doesn't mean we go back to Hasina and Khaleda : )

Yes I'm Moeen's boot licker because I want to show your Hasina and Khaleda some minimum respect.

I lick the boot pressing on their necks because I think the boot should be clean and shiny.

IT IS THE ONLY REASON WHY MANY IN AL AND BNP HAVE FINALLY LEARNT HOW TO SPELL THE WORD REFORM.

The dustbin was overflowing. The Army is just taking the trash out…

Somebody's got to do it…

Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty. Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility. Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice.

Act Independently
Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.

Journalists should:
Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
— Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
— Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
— Disclose unavoidable conflicts.
— Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.
Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.
Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.
Be Accountable
Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.

Journalists should:
— Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.
Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.
— Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.
Minimize Harm
Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect.

Journalists should:
— Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
— Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.
— Recognize that gathering and reporting information may cause harm or discomfort. Pursuit of the news is not a license for arrogance.
— Recognize that private people have a greater right to control information about themselves than do public officials and others who seek power, influence or attention. Only an overriding public need can justify intrusion into anyone's privacy.
— Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity.
— Be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex crimes.
— Be judicious about naming criminal suspects before the formal filing of charges.
— Balance a criminal suspect's fair trial rights with the public's right to be informed.

Seek Truth and Report It
Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

Journalists should:
— Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible.
— Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing.
— Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.
— Always question sources' motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises.
— Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.
— Never distort the content of news photos or video. Image enhancement for technical clarity is always permissible. Label montages and photo illustrations.
— Avoid misleading re-enactments or staged news events. If re-enactment is necessary to tell a story, label it.
— Avoid undercover or other surreptitious methods of gathering information except when traditional open methods will not yield information vital to the public. Use of such methods should be explained as part of the story
— Never plagiarize.
— Tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience boldly, even when it is unpopular to do so.
— Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others.
— Avoid stereotyping by race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or social status.
— Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant.
— Give voice to the voiceless; official and unofficial sources of information can be equally valid.
— Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.
— Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.
— Recognize a special obligation to ensure that the public's business is conducted in the open and that government records are open to inspection.

[mukto-mona] Hello?

Dr. Jiten Roy had agreed that I sent his mail to MM. Here it is:

You like it or not, White House will be in the same hands!

Yes, I had supported Iraq war & Bush and still I do. Any problem? Again, if it's a fight between McCain & Obama, I will love to cast my vote for McCain. As I had told before, you like it not, if things goes like this, Republicans will win.  Surely, it does not matter whom I vote or whom I support but I have the right (I am not living in Islamic country) to do that in my own way. I had voted Clinton, Bush, Hillary, Juliany and Bloomberg. You may try to find a fundamental pattern in it!

I have seen so many so-called progressives or socialists in my life which forced me to a conclusion that there is no difference between so-called socialist & Islamists with respect to Bangladesh. Some of our MM 'Paper Tigers' are taking decisions so fast which tells us pointedly that, only they but none knows anything. Bravo!

I am from Bangladesh and I see everything on that perspective. My name is real and thus I am a Hindu in a semi-Islamic country. I saw in my own eyes the way of persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh and only for that reason I could be a fundamentalist. I am not, because I saw Dr. Nabi, Dr. Mohsin Ali, Syed Mohammed Ullah and so many who are Muslims but not Islamists. Yes, I talk about the rights of minorities in Bangladesh and if for that reason somebody called me fundamentalist, let it be. I frequently talked against militant Islam and if that makes me fundamentalist to some so-called progressives, let that be.

I have no business with religion Islam but I have every business with militant Islam. I am with him who are against militant Islam. Reason I had supported Bush was that he did not appease militant Islam. I believe fighting terrorism is the only solution, not appeasing. I am a victim of Bush's economic policy but still I felt he did the right thing going to Iraq & Afghanistan. Our so-called progressive friends are very critic about Human Rights in USA, Europe, India, Iraq, Afghanistan but they are silent about the dwindling minorities of Bangladesh (Because they are beneficiary of that!).  Oh, sometimes we heard mew, mew but that just for face saving. Those hypocrites want America & India a democratic country but Bangladesh a Muslim country. I wonder if Iraq & Afghanistan were not a Muslim country what they would do!  Some ultra progressive MM writers who happen to have a Hindu name (Hindu or pseudo name?) are worse than Islamists. One thing is good, people are talking and that was possible because of the US & Western policy. Terrorist's hubs are now open to vulnerability, even in Bangladesh, so those brave souls are talking big from safe haven!! Well, economy is bad; we are losing jobs & houses, but somehow we need to pay some prices.

When I talked about McCain's win, looks like some people got irritated as if I had told the last word. Who cares who wins; I had just analyzed the political situation (Right or wrong) and commented from that angel. I did not assume that everybody will buy my arguments but I was surprised by Avijit's reaction. Dear Avijit, forget America, look into Bangladesh from where you and as well as I myself are virtually driven out. Professor Ajoy Roy is a fantastic personality and a real progressive person. Now he is the president of HRCBM, Bangladesh. Are you suggesting me to call him a fundamentalist? I salute him for his courageous decision, he is not a hypocrite like so many in MM forum. Shri Avijit, give me a solution for you & me and as well as for our next generations in Bangladesh, only then you advise whom shall I support, Bush or Hillary? Fleeing from a problem & becoming a so-called communist/atheist does not solve the problem rather that is cowardice.  Thank you.
