[mukto-mona] Atten:Mr Faizul Latif

Dear Mr Latif:

Looking forward eagerly to read your interview with Sibnarayan Ray and piece.

Why don't you send it to EPW or Mainstream?

If in Bengali, I think Desh will gladly carry the piece here in West Bengal.

I may speak to India Press Agency of New Delhi, founded by Nikhil Chakravartty. It pays very little, Rs 400. But it has a small but solid network.

Warm regards,
Sankar Ray __._,_.___

[mukto-mona] Russy Karanjia

Sanjay Kapoor, wellknown to me, apart from looking at Russy nostalgically – with joy, sorrow, sentimental chagrin too – exposes Sudheendra Kulkarni who was exec ed of Sunday Observer, when I was working as a special correspondent, Observer Group. Kulkarni vitually became a lap dog of Vajpayee and for that he switched over from the Advani camp.

He was not alone. Devendra Kaushik, the pro-CPI scholar who did good research on central Asia before and after the Russian Revolution, like Dange's daughter Roza and son-in-law also joined the Sangh Parivar.
Sankar Ray

Citizen Kane says goodbye March Issue, Hard News Monthly (http://hardnewsmedia.com/2008/02/2048)
With the death of Russy Karanjia, editor of Blitz, the journey of journalism from socialist ideals to Hindutva to corporate interests takes a full circle. The only irony is that even in his last days he thought that the fiery tabloid was still shaping the politics of the day
Sanjay Kapoor, Delhi, Hardnews
Russy Karanjia (1912-2008), the colourful founder editor of weekly Blitz, who died in his sleep on February 1, 2008, has been staying away from the public eye after he slipped in his bathroom more than 10 years ago. bathroom falls have hastened the passage of the old, but Russy, as he was called, hung on. It impaired his memory and prevented him from discharging his responsibilities as the editor of Blitz. During his period of ill health and amnesia, Russy, never really got to know the demise of his lifelong passion - his weekly newspaper. Whenever he used to have flashes of his old memory, he would ask his handlers to find out whether the "edition" had gone for print. He would even ask on what subject the editorial was going. Right till his death, it appears that he did not know that the newspaper had discontinued publication.
I was the bureau chief of Blitz (1991-98) right till the time the weekly suddenly folded up on one September morning in 1998. Blitz was a small organization - quite flat in its functioning - and its closure came as a bolt from the blue. No one really believed that the weekly that brought fear in the hearts of the high and mighty through its exposes would fade away so quietly into history. It was evident that Russy was not in control of the events that led to the collapse of the paper. Old employees would always pride in the fact that crisis had been simmering in the fiery weekly on many occasions in the past, but Russy and his wife would never allow the paper to close down. They borrowed from relatives, friends and well-wishers to ensure that their employees get their salary on time.
When the crisis sharpened in September 1998, we all knew, this time it was different. A manager showed up wearing a funereal countenance and told me that Blitz was closing down and he was under instruction to pay off everyone and put a lock in the office. My illustrious predecessor, A Raghavan, although had retired after working for 40 long years in the organisation, he continued to come to the Blitz office in the INS (Indian Newspaper Society) building at Rafi Marg, New Delhi, to write his weekly column.
Raghavan, who is no more, flared up when the manager revealed his agenda. An old union leader, he had been at the vanguard of the protracted struggle to get journalists better wages and had fought several attempts of newspaper-owners to cheat their staff. Raghavan, too, never expected such a fate would befall the paper. After all, Blitz, was different. It was a people's paper that never sided with other newspaper-owners. The slogan, 'Free, fair and fearless,' now borrowed by other pretenders, was originally and typically Blitz.
Understandably, it stayed away from all such groupings like the Indian and Eastern Newspaper Society (IENS). Russy would say that it is a body controlled by the "jute press". The manager revealed that the magazine had been in dire straits for some time and the company had taken a loan from Vijay Mallya to revive the paper. Seemingly, the money was not put to its intended use so the matter had gone in for arbitration to a former Supreme Court judge, who awarded Blitz to Mallya for three years. The manager also said that as part of the arbitration orders the entire office had to be handed over to the new company without the staff. It seemed that the new management was keener to close the weekly for good rather than make a serious attempt to run it. Expectedly, after a few months, the weekly under the new management was wound down.
And there were reasons why the voice of Blitz had to be stifled. It is a story that has never been told, and Russy Karanjia's 'obit' cannot be complete till the time some of these facts are included. Even he would not have approved of it.
Russy was very close to the Nehru-Gandhi family. Blitz, aggressively supported 'the family' and the 'socialist ideals' of the Congress government. From abolition of privy purses to bank nationalisation, the paper backed the government to the hilt. Russy's close proximity with Nehru helped him to draw close to world leaders like the Shah of Iran, President Abel Gamal Nasser of Egypt and many others. His close relationship with the prime minister helped him to emerge as one of the powerful editors of one of the most popular tabloid in the country. His book, based on a long interaction with Jawaharlal Nehru, provided a peep into the mind of Nehru. Later, he also wrote a book on the Shah of Iran, a 'close friend'.
When it became known that Russy had the prime minister's ears, several ministers and bureaucrats would seek him out and fear him. Expectedly, what was carried in the newspaper was taken very seriously by the government ministers. He was Citizen Kane with a spin.
If anything appeared in the pages of Blitz it had the ability to shake up the government. The grievances of ordinary people against corruption and high-handedness were routinely aired in the paper and invariably got quick response from the administration. Reporters were venerated by the people for taking on the insensitive and unjust administration and at times treated like 'heroes'. Indeed, many charlatans masqueraded as Blitz reporters to get their work done from local administrators in different parts of the country. Routinely, the editor would take out a notice denying "so and so" had anything to do with Blitz. Funnily, later, one such gentleman against whom such a notice was taken out in the pages of Blitz ended up joining the publication.
Indira Gandhi was upset with Russy after he only dumped her during the Janata Party days and ran a campaign against her; but he made up with her later. Karanjia's philosophy was simple: If you have the prime minister to back you then there is nothing to fear. In fact, he called himself at times as the "PM's bulldog". Besides, he believed that the government represented public interest and it was best equipped to protect the masses with a little bit of help from a vigilant press.
Blitz sought to fill that all important role. Close association of the government also helped him to get advertising support from public sector companies - which were occupying the commanding heights of the economy then - and state governments. He really did not need the help of the corporate world that was perceived by his Leftwing editors and reporters as predatory, selfish and anti-people.
For Russy, life was comfortable when the Nehru-Gandhi family was in power. His comfortable world began to look unsettled when the Janata Party and its other avatars began to successfully pose a challenge to the Congress. Hence, when the Janata Party came to power in 1977, he found Morarji Desai as the new prime minister. Karanjia had campaigned hard against Desai and his son, Kanti, and knew that he would not enjoy the same respect and influence as he did when the Congress was in power. Cosying up to Charan Singh, the deputy prime minister, was the logical thing to do if Russy wanted to remain relevant.
Russy had a way of endorsing leaders and the issues they championed. He always claimed that he represented 'public interest' and if he was supporting Nehru, Gandhi or Charan Singh, it stemmed from his feel of the pulse of the masses. Sometime he used to go horribly wrong, as it happened when he opposed VP Singh. In fact, he became so close to Rajiv Gandhi that he took it upon himself to defend him against all odds. He scooped exposes on how the CIA was trying to unseat Gandhi. He claimed that he befriended Chandraswami and sailed with him in an yacht in the south of France to find out what the anti-Gandhi group was really up to.
An expose that really stirred up things was a letter that he published on the front page of Blitz written by then head of American intelligence agency CIA Bill Casey, to the chief of the conservative Heritage Foundation where he suggested that a study should be done to find out the political implications if Rajiv Gandhi is removed from the scene. Russy sensed a conspiracy that Rajiv Gandhi will be assassinated. He also branded all those opposed to him as "friends or agents" of CIA.
The fact that VP Singh and his Janata Dal managed to make the government clearly indicated that the Blitz campaign did not wash with the masses. The allegations of corruption against Rajiv seemed truer than what Russy was alleging. His manifest miscalculation of politics began to reveal itself in the progressive slide of the weekly. After that, the weekly never recovered.
VP Singh, hurt by the opportunism of Russy, never gave him an appointment. And that hurt a man who drew his sustenance from the office of the prime minister. For perhaps the second time in his life, he began to run a campaign against an incumbent prime minister. He was strategically helped as the Ambanis were there to see an early exit of the Janata experiment - they were backing the then deputy prime minister, Devi Lal, to upstage VP Singh.
Expectedly, Singh's government fell. And Russy awaited the return of Rajiv Gandhi after the 1991 elections. In fact, 1991 was a significant year for Blitz and Russy. During this year the weekly did some of the most significant scoops in recent years. In May 1991, he did a front page article detailing a meeting of businessmen and other conspirators who wanted to "stop Rajiv at all cost" from returning to power - implying that they would even get him killed. Karanjia's article was so prescient that the week his article appeared in the paper, Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a human bomb at Sriperumbudur.
Surely, Russy did not believe in his own story. He was stupefied when I informed him about the assassination. Suddenly, he realised that the person on whom he had invested so much time and space and also his future plans, has gone. And more impo-rtantly, many of those he had hinted in the story - of conspiring to kill Rajiv Gandhi - were out there, powerful and calling the shots
Although, the Congress rode back to power, Russy realised that it was not the same party. The policies of economic liberalisation initiated by the then prime minister PV Narasimha Rao and finance minister Manmohan Singh, not only devalued the government, but also gave primacy to an ideology that Blitz had been consistently opposing. The Soviet Union had collapsed. The 'ugly American' was being celebrated and the capitalist class was enjoying a major image makeover. Rao did not trust Russy. He, too, reciprocated similar sentiments. He alleged on many occasions that Rao was a beneficiary of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination and worse, that he still kept the company of 'godman' Chandraswami, who was perceived as a major conspirator behind the removal of Rajiv Gandhi. Although he knew Sonia Gandhi, but she was not in a position to help Blitz as she was never sure as to how Rao will respond to it.
In 1991, the paper exposed one of the biggest scandals of our times. The expose was done by me and Karanjia was an active player in ensuring that the report got good display. So excited was he about the story that he thought it would turn the fortunes of the paper. Although help never came from anywhere, Blitz and Karanjia collected more enemies. It became a magazine that had to be silenced at all costs. It was just too independent for those who were the reigning kings of organized sleaze and corruption.
During this period of ideological confusion, Russy employed Sudheendra Kulkarni, after his trusted lieutenant and deputy editor, P Sainath, decided to part ways with the newspaper. Kulkarni had earlier worked in The Daily, Russy's mindless and exhausting foray into daily journalism. At that time, Kulkarni used to literally wear his ideology - Marxism - as a medal on his shirt. But when he joined Blitz during 1994-95, he had already shed his old skin. He became a strong votary of Right-wing Hindutva.
To his credit, he had sensed early the rise of the BJP. He became close to LK Advani. Desperate for relevance Russy gave him space in his newspaper and allowed him to make a clear departure from its earlier Leftist moorings. The change in Blitz's policy shocked many of its diehard readers. Many of them felt betrayed by the turnaround. But he was reassured that this would get him a new set of readers who had stayed away from the weekly for so many years. He was also promised that this change in policy would get him critical funds.
Under Kulkarni's 'executive editorship', Blitz announced a series on "tycoons of our times". As part of this series, Kulkarni was asked to interview the Hindujas. Russy knew the Hindujas from the days of the Shah of Iran and wanted them to help out the paper during this hour of crisis. Russy's hope for help was misplaced. His trusted 'messenger' joined the people from whom he was expecting help. Kulkarni was employed by the Hindujas. Later, he joined the Advani camp in the BJP and subsequently became a senior official in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) when Atal Behari Vajpayee was at the helm.
Karanjia was grievously hurt professionally. He had been out-thought and out-maneuvered by those whom he had opposed all these years. He was used and thrown aside. This setback took a heavy toll. He fell ill. When he came out of this illness, Karanjia published a front page apology for backing Hindutva and for abandoning the Nehruvian socialist editorial policy. His illness, he claimed, was due to the values that he had forsaken. Tragically, there weren't enough faithful readers left to read his apology.
Karanjia never fully recovered from his physical problems after that. His family tried to have a tie-up with London's Daily Mirror, but that did not go beyond the drawing board stage. Russy's absence did not stop the weekly from doing tough exposes against Chandraswami, hawala dealers and how the government was being subverted by corporate interests. The buzz in influential circles was that the newspaper has become inconvenient. The exposure of the Hawala scandal and the manner in which it began to redefine national politics in 1996 when the Supreme Court took control over its probe made these vested interests more determined to close down the newspaper. The non-political family members of Russy were not aware of these undercurrents when they began to mobilize funds from the market.
Indeed, was the meltdown of Blitz an outcome of the shenanigans of these vested interests?
Karanjia lived for 10 years more after the tabloid's closure in the belief that his paper was still coming out every week and stirring up politics and the country like it did many years ago. Whenever he would come out of this memory loss, he would call me sometime or Raghvan, till he was alive, and ask: "What is the story you are doing for the cover page." That's the only page that mattered to him.
I never had the courage to tell him that Blitz was history.

[mukto-mona] Re: Dr. Jaffor & Avijit, please don't lost your sense

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46930

My response to Mr. Sitangshu Guha

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Since Mr. Guha raised so many questions addressed to four different
people (Avijit, Jahed, Mr. Akbar, and myself), I will only answer the
ones addressed to me.

Have lost my cool? Not yet, Mr. Guha. I was wondering why Mr. Guha
was campaigning so strongly for Senator McCain in Mukto-mona forum.
In a condescending voice he told us that John McCain will be elected
in November 2008. His arguments were devoid of substance. The Mukto-
mona forum-goers would have been much benefited if Mr. Guha would
tell us what made Senator McCain a better candidate than Senator
Clinton or Senator Obama. His post had personal anecdotes and that
was all.

I was born in an ultra-liberal family. Our family gave us nothing but
liberal values. My father was a disciple of M.K. Gandhi who
maintained a charka in our house even in 1950s. He joined the
Swadeshi Movement in his youth. In Tejgaon, Dhaka where we lived,
our lives commingle with our Hindu neighbors. My school teachers who
I admired most were all Hindus. Dinesh Sir, Parimal Sir, Makhan Sir,
and Nani Basak Sir (father of film actress Shabnam) all have left
indelible memory in me. We used to have classical songs and sitar-
sorod recitals in our house many a time. In other words I grew up in
a free environment. My father did not allow us to attend Jumma
prayer in the local mosque lest we are brainwashed by the illiterate
Mullah. His suggestion was that if we wanted to pray, we should do
it in the confine of our house. My father was a Sufi and I don't
remember him attending any mosque service. Before I forget let me
say this - I attended the Church school in Tejgaon run by the
catholic Portuguese missionary from 1951 through 1955. As a child I
used to sing songs praising Mother Mary alongside with Christian boys
and girls. Now, how permissive was my family? Any comments, Mr.
Guha?

In the early 1960s I have seen how Hindus were butchered in trains
near Kurmitola, Tongi, Pubail. The Muslim League government of Ayub
Khan/Monem Khan used to goad the local Gundas in Tejgaon-Tongi area
to fan the flame of communal hatred. As a college student I used to
protest these nefarious activities.

Ever since I came to America in late 1960s I never set my foot to any
mosque. The local Bangladeshis who are Muslims very seldom invite me
to attend social gatherings because they learned that I am very
critical of Islamic practices and I questioned the Islamic
doctrines. I am also critical to the blind belief system of Hindus,
Buddhists, and Christianity.

I am a practicing liberal. All my family members including my three
children are ultra-liberals but they all lead a moral life.
Liberalism is my guiding principle; therefore, I am drawn to the
Democratic Party. For the life of me, I do not understand how deshis
are drawn to the Republican Party. If trouble brews in this country
centering on racial line, we should count on liberal Jews, blacks,
and educated whites to defend us. The country club Republicans
(whites) and neo-cons won't come forward to save our skin. I am glad
that racial harmony is being maintained for the last 40 years.

I have already replied to the queries of Dr. Jiten Roy; therefore, it
will be redundant to comment any further in respect to the good
doctor. I hope I have conveyed enough information to Mr. Guha to let
him know my upbringing in Dhaka. Let him now judge whether I am a
fake or pseudo-liberal.

[mukto-mona] Re: Reply to SC

--- In mukto-mona@yahoogroups.com, "Subimal Chakrabarty " wrote:

In USA, secularists are considered as those people who have no
particular religious affiliations. Secularists are considered as
people who are indifferent of religion, which is same as atheists or
communists. Hindus are born with religious identity and affiliation.
They are identified by their names. I have seen communists, who
denounce their own religion, but not others; they are eager to
promote other religions just to prove his non-communal identity.
These are hypocrites.

What we mean by secularism in the Indo-Bangladesh region is
different. In there, secularists are those people who have tolerance
for other religions. In that context, secularists are not the same
as communists, because they have their own religious identity. I was
talking in the context of USA. That is why I have combined them.

Similarly, Liberal/Progressive meaning in USA is different from what
it means in Indo-Bangladesh context. In my previous reply, I have
given a test for a liberal/progressive. According to that test
criterion, I believe most of us are not liberals. Therefore, those
comments may not be valid in the context of Indo-Bangladesh.

I do not have time now; it's almost 12 midnight. More will be
discussed later. Good night.

Thank you.

[mukto-mona] Why you guy's attacking Mr. Guha for something I have said?

Am I missing something here? Could someone explain to me why
everyone attacking Mr. Guha for something I have said? Will it be
wrong if I assume that you guys do not like him very much for some
reasons? My guess would be - his comments hurt you. You want
everyone to agree with you all the time.

As far as I remember, I have given my name at the end of my
comments. Yet, you choose to refer me as "Mr. Guha's friend." Is my
name too difficult to remember? Why don't you call me: Jiten or Mr.
Roy or Dr. Roy, if you like. Don't make me nameless. That's
demeaning. By the way, Dr. Jaffor Ullah addressed me the same way
also. So, don't you worry you are not alone.

I believe, the ideal of Mukta-Mona Forum is to promote open minded
discussions – isn't it? Therefore, should we concentrate
on "discussions" instead of personal attacks? In the mean time, it
won't hurt us if we show some respect for others. If we can do that,
then we will be able to carry on with our discussions. There are
quite a lot of issues to be discussed….

Thank you.

Jiten Roy

[ALOCHONA] Why Remittances so low compared to Pakistan?

This proves, Bangladesh should start education in English from 1st Grade so more of them can emigrate to much more advanced countries than in Middle East working as just under-paid labor slaves.

Even in Russia Wages are a lot higher than Middle East for ordinary labor. Even illiterate Pakis try to enter rich Western Countries legally of illegally first and after failing or not having enough money for Airline Tickets or Sea Trawlers of Smugglers, or not being able to afford to have a fake Visa to those countries try for Middle Eastern countries.

Some years ago, USA was letting everybody in even, when he had a fake Visa. I do non't think the same policy is still being practiced after 9/11 incident. I guess, nobody told this to Bangladeshis. Only one out of 50 entering USA-Mexican borders get caught. More than 600 Pakistanis were caught just in year 2006, meaning 590 x 50 = 29,500 got away.

Do people of Bangladesh know, yearly Per Capita Income in Canada ($ 44,000), USA ($ 46,000 or 12th highest in the world behind Luxemburg, Norway, Ireland, Iceland, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, UK and Finland) and other European Countries compared to Middle East?

Banning English has made Bangladesh become way behind even just one of the city of Pakistan, Karachi because that city has more Foreign-company-paid IT jobs than whole Bangladesh. India has become the biggest Beneficiary receiving about 2 million jobs of Americans in IT Sector paying Rs. 15,000 a month or above.

The Money Bangladeshis sending thru remittances have never reached $ 1 billion mark, when Pakistan is reaching $ 5 billion mark now.
When is Bangladesh going to wake up to the facts of life?
If anybody interested in learning more tricks or trade in this business. I'm available to let you and Govt of Bangladesh learn more about this. Why has not Bangladesh Govt tried to consult with people like me on the subject for last 36 years is the question.

Bangladesh expat remittances up 35 pct in February

Reuters - Friday, March 7
DHAKA, March 6 - Bangladesh received $676.06 million in remittances from expatriate workers in February, up 35 percent from a year ago but down from a record high of $710.74 million in January, the central bank said on Thursday.
In July-February, the first eight months of the 2007/08 financial year, remittances from more than 5 million Bangladeshis working abroad totalled $4.83 billion, 26 percent higher than the same period of 2006/07.

Booming economies in the Middle East and the Gulf region, as well as an ageing population in European countries and rising skills of Bangladeshi workers were driving demand for Bangladeshi labour, officials have said.

Remittances hit a record $5.98 billion in the 2006/07 financial year that ended in June, 24.52 percent higher than the previous fiscal year.

The central bank expects the inflow of remittance to touch an annual $10 billion over the next two years, boosting a key source of foreign exchange for the impoverished majority-Muslim country.

It has been making vigorous efforts to encourage expatriates to send money home through legal channels, officials said.
The majority of the expats work in the Middle East, the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan and Singapore.

Remittances from Bangladeshis are the country's second biggest source of foreign income after ready-made garments, which earned more than $9 billion in the 2006/07 fiscal year.

Re: [ALOCHONA] What was wrong with 22 january election????????

Who gave 15 years? every 5 years  political parties had to give answer  tot he questions of people during vote. those who could satisfy  majority of people  by their deeds(answers), won the election.

CTG has lost character , hence people are suspicious about their motives. overall loss of the country due to the inefficiency  and reactivity of the CTG in every sector is far more  than the loss due to the every negative aspects of the political parties (hartal, corruption etc).

So we don'tr want to wait any more. We want this CTG leave the countey yesterday.

The US has branded Harkat-ul-Jihad Al Islami, Bangladesh (HUJI-B) as a foreign terrorist organisation and an "especially designated" global terrorist outfit.

US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice announced the tag under an executive order Wednesday in Washington, according to a statement released by the US embassy in Dhaka Thursday.

"On March 5, 2008 Secretary Rice designated Harakat ul-Jihad Al Islami, Bangladesh (HUJI-B) a foreign terrorist organisation and as an especially designated global terrorist under Executive Order 13224," the release said.

The leader of HUJI-B signed the February 1998 fatwa sponsored by Osama bin Laden that declared American civilians to be "legitimate targets for attack", the US said.

"Since then, HUJI-B has been implicated in a number of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh and abroad," the release added.

"This designation means that it is illegal for persons in the United States or subject to US jurisdiction to provide material support to HUJI-B; requires US financial institutions to freeze assets held by HUJI-B; freezes all property and interests in property of HUJI-B that are in the United States, come within the United States, or within the control of US persons; and enables the United States to deny visas to representatives of HUJI-B," the statement clarified.

The US termed Bangladesh a "strong partner of the United States in fighting terrorism" and praised its action to bring HUJI-B "terrorists" to justice and to prevent further attacks.

"We applaud Bangladesh's efforts to fight terrorism and are committed to further strengthening this partnership as we redouble our efforts to counter HUJI-B and other terrorist organisations around the globe," it said.

[ALOCHONA] March 7th 1971: A day that carved the path to freedom

A day that carved the path to freedom

Fri, Mar 7th, 2008 1:02 am BdST
Dhaka, March 7 (bdnews24.com)—A day to remember a historic speech that made a turning point in the history of Bangladesh: March 7.

The day set the stage for a final battle—fought and won in 1971.

The man who made a clarion call for the struggle was independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He made the address at a mammoth gathering at the Race Course (present-day Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka, setting his countrymen on the path to freedom.

In his address, Sheikh Mujib made specific charges against the martial law authorities, which failed to transfer power to elected representatives.

Towards the end of his speech, he urged his countrymen: "Build forts in each homestead. You must resist enemies with whatever you have…

"Remember, when we have learnt to shed blood, we shall give a lot more… We shall liberate this country, Insha Allah.

"The struggle this time is the struggle for our emancipation; the struggle this time is the struggle for independence."

President Yahya Khan and other leaders from Pakistan came to Dhaka on March 15 to start dialogue with Sheikh Mujib and his party.

The dialogue began the following day and continued through to the morning of March 25.

On the midnight of March 25, the Pakistan army launched its brutal crackdown in Dhaka.

Sheikh Mujib was arrested and kept confined at Dhaka Cantonment until he was lifted to Pakistan for facing trial for "sedition and inciting insurrection".

This year, the Awami League observes the day in a muted fashion as Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, also former prime minister, has been behind bars for about eight months now.

The party's general secretary Abdul Jalil is in Singapore, after being freed on parole for treatment. Many other high-profile party members ended up in jail.

The Awami League has scheduled a programme to mark the day by hoisting national and party flags at the AL offices from 6am Friday and laying wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, led by the party's acting president Zillur Rahman.

The party set a discussion meeting for a 3pm start Friday at the auditorium of Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.

[ALOCHONA] Some analysis on 2008’s list of billionaires

Some analysis on 2008's list of billionaires:

Country            No. of Billionaires

India                53

Mainland China   42

Turkey              35 (amazing feat compared to the size of the country and population)

In top ten, there are four Indians.  Head of world's largest steel maker and the top Indian at no. 4, Lakshmi Mittal, has 45 billion dollars which is more than China's combined top 13's.  India's top two's $88 billion is more than China's all billionaires's combined ($83.7 billion).

Notably absent are people from other countries in Indian subcontinent.  Does that surprise anybody?  Other than hating them, is there anything for the rest of us to learn from the Indians?

[ALOCHONA] US terms Huj -Bi as foreign terrorist outfit

Dear All,

Our presence and activities as terrorist supporters and terrorist deniers directly or indirectly in our opinions, sayings, and writings should take  special note of the following news in Bangladesh. We should wake up for our own and our children's sake. Any religion has teachings and sayings in their holy books which are very harsh and unforgiving but at the same time have teachings of love , forgiveness, and peace. It depends on the interpreters like Moulans, Muftis, Imams, Ministers etc. and teaching places like Madrasas, religious schools etc.;  how they interpret the verses depending on time, situations, and environments- either to kill somebody or make friendship and help some body. Let us take the path of peace, let us see around our own  shoulders and find some one who is supporter and financier of terrorists and try to convince him to take the path of peace.
Regards.
Yours sincerely,
Golam Akhter
Bangladesh-USA Human Rights Coalition

The Daily Star
Committed to PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO KNOW
March, 7, 2008

The US state department on Wednesday formally labelled Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami-Bangladesh (Huji-B) as a foreign terrorist organisation (FTO) and as a specially designated global terrorist (SDGT), to allow the US government to target the Islamist terrorist group's finances and operations. The group, notorious for carrying out armed attacks on unsuspecting targets, is more commonly known as Harkatul Jihad Al Islami in Bangladesh. Huji, as a global terrorist outfit, was previously put on the list of 'Other Terrorist Oragnisations' in 2003 by the US, but the latest move provides the government of that country with the legal basis for actions against the group. The designation also signals to Bangladesh, the US government's 'heightened concerns' about Huji-B, and bumps up the outfit's terrorist status by putting it among an elite group of 44 FTOs formally identified by that government.

The move came as a result of the US state department's counter terrorism wing's view that Huji-B has 'engaged in planning and preparations for possible future acts of terrorism' and 'retains the capability and intent to carry out such acts' against US targets. "The leader of Huji-B signed the February 1998 fatwa sponsored by Usama bin Ladin [sic] that declared American civilians to be legitimate targets for attack. Since then, Huji-B has been implicated in a number of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh and abroad," stated a US news release in Washington. Signed by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Executive Order 13224, criminalises providing material support to Huji-B by US citizens or people living under US jurisdictions, and freezes all Huji-B property and interests in the US and in areas under US jurisdiction.

The designation also enables the US to deny visas to Huji-B representatives, and requires US financial institutions to freeze assets held by Huji-B. The Bangladesh home ministry quickly responded to the announcement, with a senior home ministry official saying, any covert or overt activity by any terrorist organisation will be dealt with an iron fist.  Groups are usually labelled 'specially designated global terrorists' as part of the US government's three-year old campaign to starve out terrorists of funds.  So far, more than 390 groups and individuals have been designated supporters or financiers of terrorism under the programme -- meaning they are subject to seizure of assets and are prevented from doing business with anyone without government permission. Huji-B emerged with an open declaration of Jihad at a news conference in early 1992. But the then BNP government did not pay any attention to the outfit's dramatic appearance.

The group had been nourished almost unchallenged for years until now detained former premier Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League (AL) government began chasing the fanatic Islamist group in January 1998, as it had carried out an attack on late iconic poet Shamsur Rahman. Even after the extremist organisation had made an assassination attempt on the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000, the AL government however failed to check its advancement. A few of the nine suspected militants held by Rapid Action Battalion in October of last year, with a large amount of arms and explosives in their possessions, admitted to their involvement in another assassination attempt on Hasina on August 21, 2004. One of the arrestees said Huji boss Mufti Hannan's men had given him the grenades hurled at the AL chief's rally for safekeeping.

There were several reports that the BNP-Jamaat-led immediate past four-party alliance government patronised Huji-B and its leaders. The alliance government, however, was compelled to take some measures including banning the group and arresting a few of its leaders in October 2005. The move came in the wake of pressures from home and abroad to take actions against the Islamist terrorist organisation, which investigators also found responsible for perpetrating the August 21, 2004 attack on Hasina. Interestingly, a few days ahead of banning the organisation the then prime minister Khaleda Zia, also the chief of BNP who is currently in detention, held a meeting with a number of Huji leaders when they, posing as Islamic scholars, called on her at the Prime Minister's Office.

A top Huji leader categorically branded a former BNP minister as his patron to the media, after being arrested. A year into the banning, a number of top Huji leaders under a different banner held a public meeting in the capital after getting a nod from the government in October 2006.

EMERGENCE
On April 30, 1992, Huji appeared in Bangladesh through a news conference wearing sleeveless olive combat jackets over shelwar-kameez.  Terrorist leaders sat shoulder to shoulder during the news conference at the National Press Club in the capital, and boastfully described how they had fought in the previous Afghan war. They also demanded that Bangladesh be turned into an Islamic state.

A day after the public emergence, they paraded through Dhaka streets after a Juma prayer celebrating their victory over the Soviet forces in Afghanistan.  Although the US had put Huji and Huji-B on the list of 'other terrorist organisations' in 2002 and 2003 respectively, it took the Bangladeshi government three more years to ban the terrorist organisation on October 17, 2005, after much denial of its existence in the country. The then foreign minister M Morshed Khan said he had not seen 'any activity of such organisation in Bangladesh'.  Lawmakers from Jamaat-e-Islami, who had alleged links with the Islamist terrorists, also denied the existence of Huji in Bangladesh. Under such leniency and denials, Huji spread its wing in madrasas, setting up training camps in greater Chittagong and in three hill districts, carrying out terrorist activities.  Only after widespread public outrage over near simultaneous bomb attacks nationwide on August 17, 2005, did the BNP-led alliance government ban the Islamist terrorist outfit. The home ministry note banning Huji read, "Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islami is a self-proclaimed terrorist organisation. Its activities are very sensitive and it is identified as a terrorist organisation. The government is declaring Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islami and all its activities banned on the basis of information received so far."
