RE: [mukto-mona] Olama Mashyekhder Kotha Mani Na {Bangla}

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47116

Your voice will soon be echoed in millions once the country is wrested away from the chain of controls that enslaved Bangladesh since 1975. It is now evident that this government has been asked by its employer, a foreign and indigenous coalition, to keep 'sham and kul'. This government is only a new version of ;char dolio jote of Khaleda-Nizami. So Bengalis hanging on to 71-ideals, must proceed cautiously. I know a few persons have already voiced their opinions but I am yet to see them printed at Dhaka. You guess what is happening. You can also relate Prothom-alo cartoon episode and govt. role with this drama entitled 'Pagla re tui shanko narash ne'.

[mukto-mona] Re: Are we loosing DJU

When I read Mr. Guha's write-up, I started to laugh so much that my
family members thought that I needed psychiatric help. I am a
Darwinist par excellence! There is no reason to speculate that I
would turn up like `Al-Mahmood',`Anwar Zahid' or even 'Farhad Mazhar.'

Mr. Guha hardly knows me. Avijit met me in person in November 2007
while I was visiting Atlanta. We have exchanged ideas and he knows
my "love" for Abrahamanic religion.

Unfortunately, Mr. Guha lives in bi-polar world - Muslim world or
Hindu world. Since I uttered some harsh word when I saw a bout of
Hinduism in Dr. Jiten Roy and Mr. Guha, I automatically became a
suspect. These two gentlemen immediately came to conclusion that I
am a closet Muslim.

For Mr. Guha's information, I am a true secular-humanist. I will
always defend minority rights for the people of Bangladesh. We
should not only defend the Hindus but also the Chakmas, Murongs,
Santals, Garos, Khasias, Manipuris, and other minorities. I almost
cried when I visited Chittagong Hill Tracts in 2001 where the
original people (Chakmas, Murongs, etc) were marginalized by the
incoming Muslim folks from Barisal, Faridpur, etc.

Mr. Guha is rest assured that I will always be with the minorities.

I would like to request Mr. Guha and Dr. Jiten Roy to become involved
in Mukto-mona. I do not carry the Muslim baggage with me.
Similarly, we should expect them not to carry their Hindu baggage to
this forum. They both knew that Mukto-mona is a forum for liberals.
Still then, they decided to probe the minds of Mukto-monas by asking
them to test whether one is a liberal or conservative.

[mukto-mona] Deoband Rector's Speech at Anti-Terrorism Rally [Translation]

Presidential address by Marghub ur-Rahman, Rector of
Dar ul-Ulum, Deoband.
Delivered at the "All-India Anti-Terrorism
Convention", Organised by the Rabita-e Madaris-e
Islamia Arabia at Deoband on 25 February, 2008.
Translated [from Urdu], edited and abridged by
Yoginder Sikand

In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate.
Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds. May Peace be
on the Prophet Muhammad and His progeny.

Terrorism and the conditions created by it are a
matter of grave concern for every peace-loving person.
On the one hand are the destructive actions of
terrorists, which disrupt peace and cause the loss of
life of innocent people. On the other hand is the
irresponsible role of those who are meant to preserve
the law, who, in the wake of every terrorist act,
unthinkingly point their fingers at Muslims [as
supposed culprits]. Instead of seriously searching for
the real culprits, they blame innocent people and
thereby conceal their own ineptitude. These conditions
have made those in charge of the madrasas to stand up
because even today the Muslims look at the ulema of
the madrasas as their true leaders, and their stand is
considered as representative of the Muslim community,
especially in countries like India. Hence, in this
regard, madrasas must today play the role expected of
them. They must announce and explain their balanced
position on terrorism so as to shut the mouths of the
enemies of the faith. At the same time, they must plan
a strategy to counter policies and activities directed
against Muslims and those associated with madrasas.

In this context, it is appropriate to announce the
clear and unanimous stance of the madrasas on the
issue of terrorism. We have no relation whatsoever
with terrorism. We condemn all forms of terrorism, and
in this regard do not make any distinction at all.
Terrorism is a wholly wrong and condemnable activity,
no matter what the religion, community or social class
of those engaged in it. Terrorism is also a total
antithesis of Islamic teachings. Islam is a religion
of mercy and peace. Hence, any terrorist activity that
targets innocent people contradicts Islam's conception
of peace.

In this regard Islam's teachings are so explicit and
clear that it can be said, without fear of being
contradicted, that today the only comprehensive
concept of peace and harmony in the world lies with
Islam. Islam regards the killing of a single innocent
person as equal to the killing of the whole of
humankind, as the Holy Quran says. Islam clearly
instructs Muslims that if they face no threat to their
lives, property and security from others, they must
behave with them in a friendly manner. Islam also
insists on the need to respect treaties and agreements
with others. It also prefers peace. It announces the
equality of all human beings. The Holy Quran says that
God has created everyone from the same set of primal
parents, and that He has made them into different
tribes and groups so that they may recognise one
another. In his farewell address during his last Hajj
pilgrimage, the Prophet (may peace be upon him)
declared that Arabs and non-Arabs and whites and
blacks have no superiority over each other. They are
all children of Adam and Adam was made of mud. The
most noble in the eyes of Allah is he who is the most
pious. In taking revenge, Islam insists on reciprocity
and does not permit excess. In matters both of
friendship and of enmity it appeals for the
maintenance of justice, even if that might appear to
go against oneself, one's parents or other relatives.
The Holy Quran lays down that the enmity of any
community should not cause Muslims stray from the path
of justice. Islam has advised mercy for all. The
Prophet (may peace be upon him) said that God is
merciful to those who show mercy. Islam regards all
creatures as members of God's family.

In short, Islam calls for peace and justice and mercy.
Under no conditions does it legitimize strife. This is
why terrorism can have no link whatsoever with Islam.
Hence, madrasas, which are the true torchbearers of
Islamic teachings, clearly announce that they have
nothing to do with terrorism at all.

In our country today, Muslims are increasingly being
targeted, especially religious Muslims, the ulema and
graduates of the madrasas and those associated with
them. They are easily branded, or at least suspected,
as culprits in any terrorist activity without any
investigation or proof. In order to blame them it is
considered enough that they are associated with a
madrasa or an Islamic organization. The situation has
become so serious now that communal forces associate
all terrorist activities with the madrasas. In fact,
some bigoted people have even branded [Islamic]
religious education as the pillar of terrorism. All
this is happening despite the fact that the [Indian]
Muslims have continued to uphold peace and
non-violence and have displayed complete loyalty to
their country. They, especially the ulema, have made
immense sacrifices for the freedom of India. Can any
person claim that without the struggles of the ulema,
the country would have ever achieved freedom from the
clutches of British imperialism? These pious elders of
ours shed not sweat but their blood and sacrificed
their lives for the glory of the country without any
thought of recompense. This history is worth writing
in words of gold. After [India gained] independence,
these ulema of the madrasas, who were in the forefront
of the anti-imperialist struggle, spurned all reward
and focused, instead, on the task of
character-building and promoting humanitarianism.

This work is the main focus of the madrasas, which,
unfortunately, are today being branded as centres of
terrorism and anti-national activities. The truth,
however, is that madrasas work for the welfare of the
country, the community and the entire humanity. They
train peace-loving, honest and responsible citizens of
the country. They teach concern for human beings and
peace. Here love, not hatred, simplicity, austerity,
patriotism and respect for humankind are taught. It is
thus no exaggeration to claim that madrasas are a
major block that stand firm against terrorism. One
proof of this is the historical fact that these
madrasas have been in existence for centuries without
their character ever being questioned. Instead, they
have trained freedom-loving ulema who love their
country and stand for peace and loyalty to the country
and community. This tradition of theirs made the
[Indian] Prime Minister proudly declare at the United
Nations that Indian Muslims are not engaged in
terrorism. The truth is that the role of the madrasas
is as clean as a mirror. Nothing about the madrasas is
kept secret. Everything is kept open. And so when
wrong allegations are made about them it gravely pains
the heart and mind.

We wish to tell the Government and its agencies and
departments that for establishing peace and doing away
with strife they must remember the need for justice
and equality. If they are serious about combating the
curse of terrorism they must firmly abide by justice
and not make any distinction on the basis of
persuasion or religion of people. They must search for
the real culprits [in terrorist violence] and desist
from harassing innocents so that the country's unity
and integrity is preserved and that it can progress.

To understand the reality of terrorism and its context
it must be kept in mind that it is not basically a
problem of our country. Rather, it is a curse created
by those global powers whose ideology is based on
Zionism. Their sole agenda is to pursue the criminal
designs of Zionism. They are in the forefront of
spreading strife and conflict throughout the world.
Otherwise, how is it that, despite spending billions
of dollars and committing several thousand soldiers
ostensibly to combat terrorism, the problem still
remains? In fact, their failure is obvious from the
fact that they have failed even to come up with an
agreed definition of terrorism. From their actions it
is evident that they readily brand any individual who
is or can be a barrier in the path of their mindless
pursuit of their criminal expansionist designs as a
terrorist. The world very well knows that the curse of
terrorism remains alive only because of the backing it
receives from the Zionist forces. That is why those
commentators who keep a close watch on their methods
of working argue that terrorist attacks that occur in
India must be examined in detail because there seems
to be a common pattern in the methods used in several
of these attacks. It should not be that because of
incomplete investigation or because the investigation
is diverted in a different direction the real culprits
are ignored and, instead, innocent people are branded
as criminals.

For the Government to take on the menace of terrorism
it must keep in mind the historical fact that in the
past it has happened that on numerous occasions those
who are branded as criminals by the state have been
claimed as heroes by the people, especially those who
have been driven to extremism because of injustice and
oppression on the part of the state. Keeping in mind
this historical reality, the state should desist from
any action which might lead to the emergence of
extremism as a reaction.

No community must be blamed for the actions of a
single individual or group of people who belong to
that community. Otherwise, all the major religions and
communities in the world would then be branded as
terrorists, which, of course, would be grossly
erroneous. This logic also applies to Muslims. Muslims
are an inseparable part of this country's history and
civilization. To render them insecure is in no way in
the interests of the country at large.

How is it possible for [Indian] Muslims to turn into
terrorists, when, from Independence onwards, they have
been forced to suffer all manner of problems and
difficulties and various forms of discrimination but
yet have remained faithful to their country, have
always used democratic and Constitutional means to
seek to secure their rights, and have abstained from
any form of extremism and anti-national activity?
After all, how can they damage their own country for
whose freedom they have made immense sacrifices? Given
the fact that Muslims would bear the brunt of [the
aftermath of] any terrorist attack before any other
people, every rational person can understand that for
[Indian] Muslims to become terrorists is unrealistic.

I wish to tell our fellow [non-Muslim] countrymen that
we [Muslims] are their brothers. We have been living
together in this country for centuries as good
neighbours. Our joint sacrifices gave birth to what is
referred to as the 'Ganga-Jamuna civilisation'. We
have fought shoulder-to-shoulder in all struggles for
the country. If our non-Muslim fellow Indians fall
prey to the false propaganda of communal forces and
ignore the glorious history of the Muslims it would be
a great misfortune not only for us but also for them
and for the country as a whole. That is why they
should come closer to us, try and understand us, and
struggle together for the peace, unity and prosperity
of our country.

A key issue is that of the madrasas, which have been
given to us as a precious trust by our predecessors
and by the whole Muslim community. We must fully
protect them. This is our principal duty. For this we
must always keep in mind the basic purpose of the
madrasas. Our pious predecessors established them in
order to preserve the tradition of learning of the
Islamic shariah in an appropriate way. They wanted
them to train experts in the Islamic sciences and men
of Islamic morals who, through their intellectual
expertise and sterling character, would serve as
righteous leaders of the Muslim community.

In order to train such people it is necessary that we
should seek to protect our [madrasa] students from
every negative external influence, including from the
mounting wave of materialism and the curse of Western
culture. We must focus on their intellectual
development in such a way that they do not come under
the influence of any anti-Islamic movement or engage
in any illegal activities [ostensibly] in the name of
Islam.

Another crucial issue is that madrasas must seek to
let people living in their surroundings know about
their conditions, their peaceful role and their
educational activities. Many misunderstandings are
caused by ignorance. If madrasas have strong links
with their surrounding societies and if the Government
and its representatives are constantly made aware of
their activities, it would serve as a powerful
rebuttal to the propaganda of the communalist forces.
We do not need to unnecessarily make or consider
others as our enemies. Rather, what we need to do is
to spread our message of love.

In conclusion, I earnestly appeal to the leaders of
the different Muslim sects to realize that, given
today's delicate conditions, the need for Muslim unity
has never been greater before. Is it not possible for
us to set aside our minor differences and come
together to counter those opposed to us? Furthermore,
I must also mention that madrasas need to improve
their system of functioning. Their financial affairs
should be as clear as a polished mirror. Likewise, the
environment in the madrasas must be a model Islamic
one, based on good morals, trustworthiness, honesty,
respect for the rights of others, obedience to the
path of the Prophet and fear of God. If we succeed in
moulding our society on these lines, then, God
willing, all the dark clouds will vanish and the
conspiracies against the madrasas will die a natural
death.

May God make this conference a source of blessing for
all the madrasas and for the entire Muslim community.
Amen.

And, ultimately, praise be to God, the Lord of the
Worlds

[ALOCHONA] THOOLA (police) once again proved they are THOLA!

Subject: Govt cancels sector commanders' programme

In recent days we have heard telltale tall talk from IG Noor Mohammad and many others about police been acting as police again free and fair under the current caretaker government. My foot, Thola can not transform into anything but THOOLA. They have no intention to free themselves from illegal order from powerful quarters but to put their long tongue to leak feet of the powerful and IG Noor Mohammad is doing just that.

Giving no sensible logical reason Bangladesh Thola Bahini led by IG Noor Mohammad Thursday cancelled a programme of the Sector Commanders Forum scheduled for March 15, citing security worries.

There is no doubt police acted upon direct order from powerful Jamat sympathizer quarter of Dr. Fakhruddin led government. Jamaat plays a huge role shaping Dr. Fakhruddin and Gen. Moeenuddin led government as we all know there are massive Jamaat influence not only within the caretaker government but with Bangladesh military administration too, especially with DGFI.

Time has come when nation should think seriously of dissolving Bangladesh police (THOLA) force for good and rebuilding a police to serve the citizens of the country not the masters.
Thanks
Shamim Chowdhury

Govt cancels sector commanders' programme
Thu, Mar 13th, 2008 8:18 pm BdST
Dhaka, March 13 (bdnews24.com) – The government Thursday cancelled a programme of the Sector Commanders Forum scheduled for March 15, citing security worries.

The announcement came from a rushed press conference at the police commissioner's office Thursday.

DMP commissioner Naim Ahmed said the Sector Commanders Forum applied to the home secretary on Jan 14 for permission to hold a discussion and cultural function at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre on March 15 to mark Independence Day.

The application stated that sector commanders, sub-sector commanders, noted freedom fighters and respected citizens would show their respect to the martyrs of 1971.

The application added that the programme is a non-political event.

"Though the application mentioned discussions and a cultural function, a review of the invitation letter revealed that the programme has been organised with the aim of making a demand initiating the trials of war criminals," Naim said.

The police commissioner said although the application mentioned a discussion and cultural function, the invitation letter did not.

Naim said the apparent inconsistency between the application and the invitation letter and fears over possible public unrest had resulted in the event's cancellation.

"There has been no verbal communication with the applicants, but we will do whatever is necessary to maintain law and order if they gather there despite the programme's cancellation," he added.

[mukto-mona] Egypt's Grand Mufti Counters the Tide of Islamic Extremism

Egypt's Grand Mufti Counters the Tide of Islamic Extremism

Posted March 6, 2008

CAIRO—"Maybe we just need to buy CNN," says Sheik Ali Gomaa, more than a hint of exasperation creeping into his voice. After taking more than an hour to explain to yet another western journalist why a traditional conception of sharia law—along with knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence—is the best antidote to Islamic extremism, the grand mufti of Egypt is not able to disguise his frustration. Why, he wonders, does the West still not recognize who the moderate Muslims are, much less heed what they are trying to say? Shrugging his shoulders, he answers his own question: "The western media has paid no attention."
Photo Gallery: Egypt's Grand Mufti, Ali Gomaa
The Al-Azhar Mosque.
The Al-Azhar Mosque.

But it's even worse than that, Gomaa suggests. The West is aiding the most reactionary elements, the Salafis and Wahhabis, "out of political necessity," he says, alluding to America's elaborate codependent relationship with the oil-rich Saudis, who finance the vast outreach apparatus of the puritanical Wahhabi establishment. "And that," the mufti adds, "leaves behind our kind of Islam."

Rising from the conference table after a long discussion of his views about Islam and the contemporary world, the 55-year-old Gomaa cuts a stately figure in his Al-Azhar University scholar's garb, a dark caftan covering his white, ankle-length djellaba and a white and red cap atop his roundish head. As the grand mufti, Gomaa heads the Dar al Ifta (literally, the house of fatwas), a government agency charged with issuing nonbinding religious legal opinions on any question, large or small, that might come up in the life of a faithful Muslim. Part scholar and theologian, part jurist and administrator, he is a completely busy man—not least because his office issues some 5,000 fatwas a week, including both the official ones that he himself crafts on important issues and the more routine ones handled via phone and Internet by a dozen or so subordinate muftis. When not overseeing this operation, the sheik also appears on radio and television, participates in conferences, sometimes preaches and teaches (including at nearby Al-Ahzar University, Sunni Islam's foremost seat of learning, where he was once a student and professor), and gives speeches abroad, mostly in the cause of promoting his broad-minded, pragmatic, and, he insists, traditionalist understanding of Islam and sharia law.

Ever since Osama bin Laden's minions committed their murderous acts, western politicians and commentators have asked the same questions repeatedly: "Where are the voices of moderate Islam?" Yet the West—including, more specifically, the U.S. government—has done little to locate or assist such moderates. In some notable cases, such as its denial of a visa to the prominent European Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan in 2004, Washington has even gone out of its way to insult them.

Western official ineptitude aside, a more urgent question remains unanswered: What influence do moderates such as Gomaa—and particularly those coming from the traditional learned class, or ulema—have within the vast community of Muslim believers? While Gomaa himself voices concerns about the rise of Islamic extremism in the West, he marshals a raft of statistics to support his view that respect for traditionalism is large and growing in the core of the Muslim world. These include a massive growth in the demand for fatwas issued by his office, a mushrooming of secondary feeder schools for the traditionalist Al-Azhar University, and the growth of Al-Azhar itself from three colleges in 1950 to 72 today. "Can we say that the traditional ulema has lost its popularity?" he asks. (His broad confidence might be further corroborated by a new Gallup study, which found that 93 percent of Muslims from 35 different nations call themselves moderates.)

But other observers, including prominent Egyptian journalists and intellectuals, are far more skeptical about the impact of the mufti and other ulema, even within Egypt itself. They suggest that their association with corrupt authoritarian regimes lowers their standing among the people and taints their teaching. In light of such sharply differing views, the question of who will triumph in the struggle to define Islam is far from resolved.

Adapting. One thing is absolutely clear, though: Gomaa's unshakable confidence—repeated as often by his protégés as by him—that the inherent moderation and pragmatism of traditionalist Islam make it far superior to anything proposed by puritanical Salafists or Wahhabis or utopia-minded Islamists. Through the centuries and across cultures and continents, Islam spread and flourished, they all say, precisely because the principles of sharia were applied and interpreted in light of changing reality. Apart from supporting bedrock principles of the faith as set forth in the Koran and the hadith (the authoritative accounts of the words and deeds of the Prophet), Islamic jurists sought to make the lives of Muslims easier, not more difficult, through their realistic application of religious law. As Gomaa sees it, what the best Muslim jurists have always done is to focus on the intent of sharia to foster faithfulness, dignity, intellectual growth, and other core values. Called al makased, this method of seeking to apply the law through an understanding of its purposes is at the core of Gomaa's scholarship and jurisprudence and is being spread by his scores of students and followers.

But there have always been in Islam, as in other religions, the terrible simplifiers, the puritans who, like the 18th-century Arabian cleric Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, claim not only to streamline the faith but to return it to basic principles. Often called Salafists, such Muslims in more recent times have also presented themselves as modernizers and reformists. The more political among them, the Islamists, have additionally sought to make Islam into a political program to replace secular forms of government.

Tossing out centuries of reasoned reflection upon the meaning of sharia and discounting the importance of most schools of jurisprudence, these puritans reduce the law to selected passages from the Koran and the hadith and, as the traditionalists see it, distort the intent of sharia by taking the chaff for the wheat. "Their fast-food jurisprudence has led to great intolerance," says Suhaib Webb, a 36-year-old American convert to Islam who came to Al-Azhar University from California precisely to learn the classical traditions of jurisprudence. "The classical discourse dealt with reality," Webb says. "The modern discourse is utopian. Ali Gomaa is respected because he deals with reality."

Since being appointed grand mufti by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 2003, Gomaa has demonstrated that realism in scores of rulings on matters that have profound implications for the lives of Muslims. In a country where female genital mutilation is still widely practiced in the name of religion, Gomaa declared it un-Islamic and wrong. He has ruled that Muslims should not be punished for leaving the faith. Citing conflicting opinions from different religious sources, he has declared that there is no definitive edict against playing or performing music. He has said it is permissible, with some restrictions, for Muslim financial institutions to charge interest on loans. He has ruled unequivocally that women may serve as judges and hold political office. He has been equally bold in saying there should be no Islamic political parties, on the grounds that they create divisions between Muslims—a view that makes officials of Egypt's Islamist Muslim Brotherhood uneasy.

Even as Al-Azhar-trained scholars go, Gomaa is a sheik with a difference. A practical and worldly man, he received his first university degree in commerce. Having memorized the Koran on his own, he entered Al-Azhar without going through the rigorous preparation of its high school system. After completing the highest degree in 1988, he taught law there, wrote some 25 books, and revived the old Islamic practice of informal "knowledge circles" at the university's historic mosque. In these circles, as well as in the packed Q&A sessions that he introduced at the famous Sultan Hassan Mosque, where he delivered Friday sermons, Gomaa took on all who tried to simplify or distort the faith without knowledge of its traditions.

Still, his renown did not reach far beyond Egypt or even Cairo until, as mufti, he began to appear on popular broadcast and satellite programs. Bright, well-educated, and younger Muslims in particular found his manner refreshing and his message liberating. "I never used to listen to his predecessor," a 27-year-old Cairo physician says. "But when Ali Gomaa comes on, I pay attention. And not just me."

Loyal following. Another person who paid attention, and who then went on to promote the mufti's style of orthodoxy, is Moez Masoud, a 30-year-old advertising executive who, between writing and producing commercials, has become a highly successful Muslim televangelist. From his first satellite broadcast in 2002 through last fall's 20-part series The Right Way, Masoud has built a loyal following among young Muslims whose lives share many features of his own. Educated in American schools throughout the Middle East, including the American University in Cairo, he excelled at everything he touched, from sports to music to academics. But while devouring western philosophy, cultivating postmodern irony, and experimenting with the hedonistic lifestyle glamorized in western media, he felt a gnawing emptiness for which religion increasingly seemed the cure. The only problem was that the Islam most forcefully on display was that of the simplifiers and Islamists, whose aggressive efforts to recruit the clearly charismatic student ultimately repelled him.

Crediting his education and a fairly strong religious upbringing for arming him against the emotionally seductive appeals of the extremists, he says his big breakthrough was coming upon an audio lecture by Gomaa, then still a professor at Al-Azhar. Before long, Masoud was attending the sheik's knowledge circles and memorizing the Koran on his own. He became a committed Muslim in 1996, four years before taking to the air to bring his understanding of traditional Islam to issues like dating, drinking, homosexuality, and the pressures of living in a fast-paced, materialistic world. "The traditional voice was not dominant back then," Masoud says over tea in his sparely decorated Cairo apartment, "but it was providential that it found me. That's what drives me, and that's the voice that I want to make dominant."

But the voices of skepticism are not to be dismissed. One is Khairy Ramadan, a prominent editor and columnist at Al-Ahram and Al-Masry Al-Youm as well as a widely regarded talk-show fixture. "The mufti has enlightened views and great fatwas," he says, "but the people receive them with hesitation because they feel they come from the establishment." Like the mufti, Ramadan believes the West ignores the enlightened strain of Islam that still runs strong in the Middle East, but he insists that the biggest inducement to extremism is not a shortage of moderate clerics or respect for traditional jurisprudence but the economic and social inequalities arising out of a lack of democracy—a condition that, in his view, America cynically condones.

Equally wary is the popular novelist Alaa Al Aswany, author of the Arabic-language bestseller The Yacoubian Building. Addressing a small gathering at the office of an Egyptian opposition party, he is unsparing about the role of Egypt's ulema: "Some sheiks are put in office because they reduce the problems of life to daily rituals," he says, adding that the teaching of such clerics merely "distracts people from what matters." Though he finds much to admire about Gomaa's ideas, he says that the mufti would have far more authority among the people if he were elected by his peers and not installed by the government. "That determines everything," Al Aswany adds, "whether you are part of the government or are opposed to it."

But Abdullah Schleifer, a former journalist and emeritus professor of media studies at American University in Cairo, rejects what he calls the knee-jerk judgments of the secularist left. "I know Ali Gomaa has changed lives," he says. "He's been on the cutting edge of what young people are dealing with who are orthodox, or want to be, but are very influenced by the West. He's the link between the sweet orthodoxy of the young and the scholarly tradition."

Re: [mukto-mona] Family is the Nucleus of a Stable Society - Attn Dr Jiten Roy

Hi Jiten Roy,

I am not sure how open minded I am. I am not even sure what it means to be open minded. But thank you for the thought.

You said, " I believe, it will be a futile effort to try to impose any ones views onto others, and it will be detrimental if any group try to dominate the other. The best thing is to accept and respect our differences and move on."

Those are noble thoughts but may I ask how you can square this with nationalism and anti abortion and the traditional family. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you but I am unable to see how the two beliefs can be reconciled.

You said, "Nationalism is not the source for the hatred between groups. If anything, nationalism should bring people together. Of course, anything extreme is bad. If we eat too much, that's bad for health. Ultra dose of anything is bad."

Nationalism promotes separation. It promotes competition to prove one nation is the better than another nation. The US, for example, is always trying to prove it is better than, say Russia and China and India. Perhaps that might be understood but they are also trying to best their traditional allies. Nationalism may not be the source of the hatred but it reinforces it, in my view.

You say. "Those who are ultra-liberals, almost everything is acceptable to them. Their moto is if you like something do it. In otherwards, they are not guided by moral, religious, and social boundaries. In Seattle, there is group of ultra-liberals who think it is their right to sex with animals. That's an example of a moral decay to many people. Eliot Spitzer, a social/moral liberal, is one of those suffering from a moral decay."

In order to look closely at this idea you have of liberals, there needs be an understanding of where society gets its 'so-called' moral values. In that sense, what represents good morals to me may not represent good morals to you. Putting aside the sex with animals idea which, (forgive me, if I find it funny... for a lot of men look like animals to me! LOL) would seem a bit extreme, other ideas of sex come from a tradition of abuse and control. My moral and sexual boundaries would include homosexuals but not include arranged marriages so that men can marry young virgins. So, it entirely depends on where one sits. And while one idea may represent moral decay to one person, the other idea represents moral decay to the other person. Each has merits for one group or another.

Eliot Spitzer, if you think of it, was just doing what men do, as a matter of course. If you want to prevent this kind of 'moral' decay, you have to think deeper than "prostitution is wrong". Prostitution is wrong. But in my opinion, not for traditional reasons. Prostitution is wrong because the woman is exploited by a male dominated system that does not provide for its vulnerable children.

You say, "I do not want any religious teaching at school; that's up to the religious institutions and up to the family."

I don't know how to respond to this complex statement. First of all, I believe that religious teachings are the source of all evil. I wouldn't want religious teachers to teach my cat. Secondly, families only teach the same thing as religions have taught them over the years. The foundations of society are religious in origin.

You say. "I have heard this argument "it is my body." The truth is, it is your body, but you have another body growing inside your body."

Well, as a woman, it is my body and please don't tell me what I should or shouldn't do with it. But, having said that, when every man in the world takes responsibility for his children and every child is well fed and warm and safe, then I will entertain the idea that we should bring children that are accidents of sex into the world. Until then, better not to bring them into the world to suffer, unless you happen to think suffering is good as most religions teach. And I can guarantee you that if men had to take responsibility for their children, there would be no anti abortion groups.

You say. "I will never understand your arguments against family structure. Family is the nucleus of a stable society. The future generation learns moral, religious, and societal values from a good family. Procreation replenish ones generation and race, as a whole. Without family structure, generation will vanish faster. The argument that family structure is unnecessary is an ultra-liberatarian view, which I will never understand. Most people build family for procreation and that is good for all races."

Here you and I are polar opposites in out way of thinking. As a general rule, families do not teach anything that has not been handed down by religions of one kind or another. Those religions teach fear and compliance. Fear and compliance induce demons and stress. And on it goes. Children are born into intolerable situations and it is seen as good. Why is it good? Why is procreation good? It may be good to have more people to make the rich richer, to fight wars for nationalism, to die for a cause, if that represents good in your eyes.  But is it good for the person, the individual, the vulnerable child?

Teaching humans to suffer now in the hope of achieving a reward in heaven is so passe, don't you think?
