[mukto-mona] Hilary's Experience Debate [TIME]

Thursday, Mar. 13, 2008

Assessing Clinton's "Experience"

In her race to win the democratic nomination against a first-term Senator from Illinois, Hillary Clinton has put the criterion of experience front and center. She often references what she says is 35 years of work that qualifies her to run the country. And the most important achievements Clinton cites are the ones she claims from her years as First Lady — a job that carries no portfolio but can wield enormous influence.
The nature of Hillary Clinton's involvement was always a matter of great sensitivity in her husband's White House. After her disastrous 1994 foray into health-care reform, Bill Clinton's aides went out of their way to downplay her role in Administration decision making. She rarely appeared at meetings in which officials hashed out important policy trade-offs, but when the discussion centered on issues that were among her priorities, she sent her aides — much the way Vice President Al Gore did. "There were certain issues they kind of owned," recalls Gene Sperling, who headed economic policy in the Clinton White House. The First Lady's top concerns, he says, were children's issues, health care, and foster-care and adoption policies.
Now the former First Lady claims at least a share of the credit for a wide range of the Clinton Administration's signature accomplishments, both domestic and overseas. Does she deserve it? The Clinton and Obama campaigns spent this week arguing that question with dueling memos and talking points.
TIME decided to cut through the spin with a series that will take a closer look at the claims candidates make. As Senator Clinton is fond of saying, It's time to get real. We kick off the series by evaluating three of the achievements she mentions most often:

Children's Health Care
WHAT SHE SAYS
One of her biggest achievements, Clinton often tells voters, is the multibillion-dollar health-care program that provides coverage for children whose parents are too rich for Medicaid but unable to afford health insurance on their own. As one of her campaign ads puts it, "She changed the lives of 6 million kids when she championed the bill that gave them health insurance."
After comprehensive health-care reform went down to defeat in 1994, Clinton and other health-care advocates looked for targeted changes that might win more support. The most likely seemed the issue of providing coverage to children of the working poor. In October 1996, Senator Edward Kennedy introduced a bill to do just that, financed with a 75¢ cigarette-tax increase; in his State of the Union address the following January, Bill Clinton announced a plan to cover 5 million kids.
It was one of several health policies Clinton proposed, including one that would expand coverage for the unemployed. Internally, according to one former White House aide, the First Lady argued that the White House should keep its focus on the more politically popular plan to focus on children.
In May 1997, however, when then Senate majority leader Trent Lott said the children's health plan would blow up their balanced-budget deal, the President abruptly changed course and actively lobbied Democratic lawmakers to vote against it. As a result, the provision failed, and Kennedy was furious at what he considered a betrayal. Hillary defended her husband's decision, telling one audience, "He had to safeguard the budget proposal."
The measure was resurrected a month later, largely through the efforts of Kennedy and Utah Republican Orrin Hatch, who worked behind the scenes on Capitol Hill and built a coalition of children's advocacy groups to bring public pressure on Congress to pass the measure. Kennedy also privately pressed the First Lady to use her influence at the White House. After Bill Clinton signed the bill into law that August, Kennedy said at a press conference, "Mrs. Clinton ... was of invaluable help, both in the fashioning and the shaping of the program and also as a clear advocate."

THE BOTTOM LINE: The record suggests Clinton did indeed lobby for children's health coverage but that many others were responsible as well. And it also shows that her husband nearly killed the idea before it ever got off the ground.

Northern Ireland
WHAT SHE SAYS
On the campaign trail, Clinton has claimed she "helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland" in the 1990s.
Clinton's words are very carefully chosen. She has never claimed to have actually negotiated the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which paved the way toward power-sharing in Northern Ireland. Her involvement was more about generating public and private support for peace talks in the months leading up to that agreement.
It's a key distinction. There is no question that the First Lady encouraged women from Protestant and Catholic neighborhoods to push their political leaders toward the bargaining table. She traveled to Northern Ireland twice by herself in the mid- to late 1990s and praised those who stood up for peace. She engaged in particular with a group of women peace activists who were largely cut out of the male-dominated negotiations and encouraged them to keep the pressure on.
Some of Clinton's supporters, like former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, say this pressure was instrumental in creating the atmosphere for the eventual peace agreement. But several diplomatic sources who worked on the peace talks say that the women's groups were not nearly as pivotal to the process as Hillary's backers maintain. And Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey, former First Minister of Northern Ireland, told Britain's Daily Telegraph that Clinton was not involved in the process and her claims to have played a direct role were "a wee bit silly."
Clinton's husband and, to an even greater extent, former Senator George Mitchell were much more involved in those efforts, when the eyeball-to-eyeball negotiations began. Clinton was working on the outside, said several involved in the process. "She was helpful with Vital Voices," said Jean Kennedy Smith, former ambassador to Ireland, referring to a women's organization in the country. "But as far as anything political went, there was nothing as far as I know, nothing to do with negotiations." Smith, who is supporting Obama, suggested the process was well under way by the time Clinton got involved.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Clinton played a role in hearing the concerns of Irish women left out of the peace process, and in encouraging them to put pressure on their countrymen to pursue negotiations. But that does not mean she rolled up her sleeves and conducted or led the talks that resulted in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Macedonia Refugees
WHAT SHE SAYS
"I negotiated open borders to let fleeing refugees into safety from Kosovo," Clinton has asserted when asked to identify an example of her foreign policy experience.
Clinton's shorthand version of her role in the 1999 refugee crisis in Macedonia is accurate but oversimplified. She did discuss open borders with the President and Prime Minister of Macedonia on May 14, 1999. (Borders between that country and Kosovo had been opening and closing for weeks.) She did support requests for economic help that the Macedonians were making.
But keeping the borders open was a key U.S. diplomatic project at the time, and her initiative was but a part of the larger effort. During the NATO war with neighboring Serbia that spring, the fate of Kosovars fleeing Serbian ethnic cleansing was a pressing issue on the international stage. If a flood of refugees overwhelmed Macedonia, a wider regional war could erupt. No one, however, wanted to leave the Kosovars to the mercy of the Serbs. So finding a temporary home for them was crucial.
When Clinton arrived in the middle of the situation in that May, diplomats on the ground expected an ineffectual high-profile visit. But they were wrong. "She was quite at ease and professional," says a diplomat who served in the Macedonian capital, Skopje, at the time. Clinton visited refugees in camps on the border and held talks with the Macedonian leadership.
When the Prime Minister complained about American companies terminating textile contracts with local firms, Clinton promised to urge the businesses to change course. Five weeks after her trip, Clinton returned to the country with a pledge from Liz Claiborne to support textile manufacturing there.

THE BOTTOM LINE: In the case of Macedonia, Clinton engaged in personal diplomacy that brought about change. But securing the return of American business partners is not the same as the opening of borders to thousands of refugees. That accomplishment was a result of broader U.S. and European efforts during the war.

[mukto-mona] Book Review: On Christian Zionism

Name of the Book: The Politics of Apocalypse—The
History and Influence of Christian Zionism

Author: Dan Cohn-Sherbook

Publisher: Oneworld Books, Oxford

Year: 2006

Pp: 221

ISBN: 13:978-1-85168-453-3

Reviewed by: Yoginder Sikand

Christian Zionism, a variant of Christian
fundamentalism, is today a major global force to
reckon with. Christian Zionists are a key player in
American (and to a lesser extent, Western European)
politics. Firm backers of Zionism, Israel and Israeli
expansionism, they are also one of the principal
fountainheads of Islamophobia on the global scence.
The origins, development and politics of Christian
Zionism are brought out in considerable detail in this
well-researched, balanced and very timely book by the
noted activist scholar Dan Cohn-Sherbook, himself a
Jew, and Professor of Judaism at the University of
Wales.

Approximately a tenth of the American population is a
devoted member of the cult of Christian Zionism, the
author observes. 'It is the fastest growing religious
movement in Christianity today', he notes (p.xi).
Many followers of the cult are from the middle and
upper-middle classes, followers of televangelists who
wield enormous political and economic clout. Christian
Zionists are impelled by an imperialistic vision, of
Jesus' impending arrival on earth, when he shall, so
they believe, wipe out all his enemies (all
non-Christians, presumably) and establish his global
dominion, with his capital at Jerusalem. Meanwhile,
Christian Zionists believe that they, as allegedly
God's chosen people, will be spared the horrors of the
global war that shall precede Jesus' advent, and will
be miraculously wafted up to heaven, where they shall
watch the final destruction of the world.

Christian Zionists believe that Jesus can only return
the world once the Jews colonise Palestine. This
belief is based on the contentious claim that God had
granted this land to the progeny of Abraham, through
Isaac, that is the Jews, for eternity. This land is
not restricted to the present borders of the state of
Israel. Instead, Zionists, both Jewish and Christian,
believe that a vast swathe of land, stretching from
the Nile to the Euphrates, today inhabited by millions
of Arab Muslims and Christians, belongs rightfully to
the Jews, and so must be ethnically 'cleansed' of
non-Jewish presence. Hence the justification they
offer for their genocidal project aimed at the Arabs.
Hence, too, their consistent backing to Israel, their
generous funding of Jewish settlements in Palestine,
and their enormous pressure on successive American
governments to adopt rigorously pro-Israel and
anti-Palestinian policies.

The author traces the origins of Christian Zionism to
the changing attitude of Christian groups towards the
Jews following the Protestant Revolution. The early
Catholic Church justified the witch-hunt of the Jews,
labeling them as alleged Christ-killers. However,
numerous Protestant sects, while equally vehemently
anti-Jewish, believed that the Jews needed to colonise
Palestine before Jesus would re-appear in the world to
save it. This was, and still is, by no means a
generous acceptance of the Jews. Rather, they
believed, as Christian Zionists today do, that only
those Jews who accepted Jesus as the Messiah would be
saved. The rest would ally themselves with the
Anti-Christ and would be defeted by Jesus and his
forces and, consequently, would be sent off to eternal
damnation in the fires of hell.

From the seventeenth century onwards, the author
shows, numerous European, and, later American,
Protestant churches began evolving schemes to settle
the Jews in Palestine. This was also seen as a
convenient way of getting rid of the Jewish presence
in Europe. They petitioned various European powers to
back this scheme. By the early nineteenth century,
numerous British administrators had been won round to
this idea, impelled, no doubt, also by a motive to
undermine the Ottoman Empire, which at that time
controlled Palestine, and by a deep-rooted aversion to
Islam.

Increasingly, the author shows, Christian Zionists
began to join hands with secular Jewish Zionists,
whose plans to settling Jews in Israel had nothing to
do with any messianic hopes, but, rather, arose as a
response to the centuries'-old persecution of Jews by
European Christians. (In contrast, the author rightly
notes, 'In Arab lands, Jews had flourished for
centuries […] [while] in European countries Jewry had
been subject to oppression and persecution' (p.44).

Ties between secular Jewish Zionists and Christian
Zionists to pursue the common project of Jewish
colonization of Palestine, the author writes, were
strengthened by the support given to Theodore Herzl
(b.1860), the Hungarian Jew who is regarded as the
father of modern-day Zionism. The author traces the
course of this close collaboration down to the
present-day, describing the strong political and
financial links between Christian and Israeli/Jewish
Zionists and also the enormous clout of the Zionist
lobby in American political circles.

The author clearly indicates that Christian Zionism,
based on a virulently anti-Islamic agenda, is a major
hurdle to peace not just in West Asia but globally,
too. Indeed, some Christian Zionists even ardently
wish (and work for) a final global war, in the belief
that this would accelerate their hoped-for wafting up
to heaven and the subsequent arrival of Jesus. At the
same time, and this gives some cause for hope, the
author also discusses critiques of the Zionist
imperialist project by progressive Christian and
Jewish groups and also by orthodox Jewish Rabbis, who
are opposed to Zionism on the grounds that, as the
author puts it, 'It [is] forbidden to accelerate
divine redemption through human efforts'.

[mukto-mona] Re: Are we loosing DJU

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47151

Mr. Guha's balderdash again made me laugh. Mr. Guha thought that I
was attacking him because he was a hindu and his association with
HRCBM. He asked me why I did not call Ajoy Roy a hindu
fundamentalist then.

The answer is simple. Unlike Mr. Guha, Prof. Ajoy Roy did not
support illegal Iraq war and did not play any supporting role in
Bangladeshi forums for promoting hate-mongering advocacy to stir up
war against Iraqi people. In fact he wrote 3 part series articles,
named – "An Immoral War thrust upon Iraqi People". Mr. Guha can
read Prof. Ajoy Roy's series from here :

http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/current_issue/immoral_war_ajoy.htm
http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/current_issue/immoral_war_ajoy2.htm
http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/current_issue/immoral_war_ajoy3.htm

Ajoy Roy also did not play any supportive role for Bush for the
illegal war , neither did he congratulated Bush after election. So,
before using Ajoy Roy as a shield, Mr. Guha should know the
philosophy and stand of secular writers of Mukto-Mona. In fact, Dr.
Jaffor Ullah has pointed out correctly- Mr. Guha lives in a true
Bipolar world – his world is either `Muslim world' or it is
a `Hindu world'. Since MM secular members rejects Hindu
fundamentalism just as they reject Islamic or Christian
fundamentalism, and for this, some unpleasant truth of Hinduism is
exposed time to time, Jaffor Ullah or Jahed becomes a closet
Muslim. But Mr. Guha fails to realize that not only Jahed or Jaffor –
the secular writers of Muslim origin, many non Muslim writers such
as Sankar Ray, Ajoy Roy, Audrey Manning or Avijit Roy rejects his
extreme view. Of course then, Mr. Guha reserves some kind words
like – `hypocrites', `psedo-seculars', `mentally disordered
liberals' etc.

Mr. Guha supported Iraq war because he thought Mr. Bush would give
the `Muslims' a good lesson! And this is how probably his 'hindu soul' would attain Nirvana. When his philosophy was being exposed, he thought he was under attack.
Mr. Guha frequently uses the abusive words towards
the MM writers, but again he is the guy who thinks that he is the
victim of personal attack here. Playing to get victimized - is a
favorite game for him. If Mr. Guha was so concerned for the
minorities, he should not support Iraq war, as I mentioned earlier -
Iraq having no WMD, no connection with Al qaeda, or even no
connection with 9/11. Mr. Guha should also realize how minority
rights got violated when 1 million death occurred in Iraq, the
three-four million dead in US supported Polpot regime, the hundreds
and thousands dead in Latin America, half a million children who
died in Iraq and Afghan due to sanctions or bombing. Mr. Guha should
also realize how warm relationship was maintained between Bush Govt
and Saudi monarchy that are responsible for spreading washbasin
throughout the entire world. When I pointed out these in my earlier
posts, he advised me to forget about these, and should focus ONLY
on Bangladesh!

I think the world could be better off without such bipolar minority
rights activists, for sure.

This is my last response in this thread.

Avijit

[ALOCHONA] Fwd: On War Crime Issue---editorial of Asia Post, Dhaka, dated 15.3.08

Dear Sir,
On Bangladesh recent issue, you may ponder on his comments - received from one and sharing. Agree or disagree is up to you - just sharing.

Best regards.

Subject: On War Crime Issue---editorial of Asia Post, Dhaka, dated 15.3.08
Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2008 05:44:05 -0700

On War Crime Issue
A national daily has in its front page reported the attempt by a section of people to cloud and complicate the national situation on the old issue of war crimes in 1971. The daily has reported some of the policy makers in the present administration think this resurrection of the issue anew and try to build up a movement is aimed at diverting the national attention from the preparation of voter list, holding of election and tackling the new economic difficulties the country is facing as a result of price rise and flood and cyclone. They feel surprised that they are trying to start a movement though they were silent for about thirty years on the issue .Moreover, war criminals , if any among Pakistan Army operating here were forgiven and allowed to be repatriated by the then leader of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
We agree with  the above view. We do not see any purpose will be served by a new movement in this regard except political division, recrimination and  fettering away energy in litigations with little possibility of conviction .It is almost impossible to find evidence now , apart from the moral question that how far it is justified to try some local people after releasing Pakistan Army senior officers? It is a different matter that anybody can be tried for murder if a proper case is made and tried.
Some Muktijoddha commanders have become suddenly   too active in this regard. We know that their leader Mr.A. K. Khandaker was a member of the  Parliament in recent past but he never raised this issue in the Parliament. He could move a private member bill in the Parliament even if his party was not prepared for this but he did not do so. How far it is justified to be so vociferous now , does it not show a special political agenda? We feel that we have so many acute problems now and there is no good  political reason or practical need for going after a forgotten old issue when  there is no certainty at all that this will bring any fruitful result.

As rationalists & humanists, while we have rights to question Dr.

have NO moral rights to censor him just because his belief is quite

[mukto-mona] Re: "Jiten Roy- Should we give so much attention?"

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47089

Mr. Islam,

What took you so long to reply? You must have suffered emotionally
to keep everything inside you. Now that everything is out, you must
be feeling better. You deserve a medal of honor for expressing
yourself, otherwise this forum, especially I, would have missed your
thought provoking deliberation. I agree with you that, in stead of
giving me so much attention, this forum should have given outmost
attention to your invaluable sermons. Please do not stop spilling
your guts.

You have problems with everything I say and do. You have problems
with me because of my membership in the Jagannath Hall DU alumni
association. This institution is the place where I have spent more
than 6 years of my adult life as a student of Dhaka University,
Bangladesh, and this institution was my home, away home. Why is
that? I bet you did not even know what this association means. You
found a Hindu name (Jagannath) and immediately concluded that this
must be a religious organization. I got you, Mr. Islam.

I am a card carrying republican, and that is laughable to you. Are
you in a sound mental health or did you miss your medication that
day when you wrote that sermon?

You are calling for blocking my posting in this forum, like many of
your friends. Do you even understand what that suggestion means? You
are violating Mukta-Mona objective of expressing my mind. I guess,
it's beyond your mental capability.

Which leads me to a story. While I was teaching in a University, a
thought came across my mind: I give the same lecture to all my
students and they read the same book; then, why some of them get
almost cent percent, yet others can barely secure the passing
grade? I could not accept the notion that some of them are smarter
than the other, because many of those average students did much
better in life than those who did so well in the examination. So, I
concluded that, students who do so well may have higher capability
of grasping and producing. Average students may have the same
grasping power, but could not produce.

If any of my conversations, so far, did not make any sense to you at
all, then Mr. Islam, my guess is you probably do not have that much
grasping capability. I feel sorry for you. May God help you, and
keep taking your medication regularly!

Jiten Roy

[ALOCHONA] Demand of time, Avoid every puppet and supporter of this CTG, as shown by BAL

অত্যাচারী,মানবাধিকার লংঘনকারী অদক্ষ তত্ববধায়কগণের তাবেদারদের বয়কট করাই সময়ের দাবী

http://www.shamokal.com/details.php?nid=92466

RE: [mukto-mona] Re: Olama Mashyekhder Kotha Mani Na {Bangla}

Striving hard to present himself as the grand spokesman of All Muslims, Mr. S. A. Hannan fails miserably, again and again, to abide by the simplest and the straightest of Qur'anic commands:
Do not cover the Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is). - 2:42

What he calls the "misunderstanding" by the liberals and 'ultra secularists', supposedly arising from 'bad wordings' by the present Ministry of the CTG, conceals a long history of conspiratorial assault on the 1997 draft of National Womens Development Policy by the Islamists and their henchmen. In 2004 the Khaleda-Nizami govt. badly mangled and doctored the Policy without consultation or public knowledge. This 2008 version is better than the sneaky 2004 Policy, but still a watered down version of 1997.

Women's organizations who had worked dilligently in formulating the 1997 Policy are up in arms for very good reasons. Their labor of love and dedication to both UN Charters and Coventions and our own culture are being mocked by these handful of fake Ulama and Mashayekhs, named All Muslims by Hannan. Women are angry at the govt. appeasement of the fake Ulama and letting them get away with their rowdy anti-woman demonstrations in the midst of "Emergency."

Hannan is the most shameless Muslim who would disseminate falsehoods knowing full well that it conceals truth. In this instance the concealment is designed to damage the human rights of half of the citizens of Bangladesh.

Be forwarned about the fake Ulama and Mashayekhs!

                  Farida Majid

National Women Development Policy protested by the activists of different Islamist outfits

[Demonstrations in the cities of Bangladesh protesting against the proposed National Women Development Policy and demanding its immediate withdrawal. Banglar Chokh Photo.]

Several thousand activists of different Islamist outfits on Friday staged demonstrations in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque protesting against the proposed National Women Development Policy and demanding its immediate withdrawal.

Demanding rights of women as ordained by the Qur'an, the protesters gave the interim government one week to do away with the policy or face tougher action programmes, including rallies across the country after juma prayers next Friday.

They also called upon 'Muslims all over the country' to prepare themselves for thwarting, at any cost, the bid to implement the National Women Development Policy-2008, announced by the government on the eve of International Women's Day on March 7.

Activists of different Islamic parties, including those from outside the city, started gathering in front of the north gate of Baitul Mukarram since morning to join the pre-scheduled rally.
Security was tightened in the surroundings and the roads leading to the national mosque were blocked at different points, including Dainik Bangla, National Press Club, Bijoy Nagar, GPO and Paltan crossings.

Soon after juma prayers, the activists converged on the road in front of the north gate of the mosque and staged noisy demonstrations shouting slogans against the proposed women development policy.

The outfits which organised protest included Islami Shashantantra Andolan, Hizbut Tahrir Bangladesh, Islami Chhatra Majlish and Islami Ain Bastobayon Committee. The activists, escorted by police and other security forces, marched down the street towards Paltan and Dainik Bangla crossings.Later, they held a rally in front of Baitul Mukarram and announced their next course of action.

The Islamist leaders accused the interim government of trying to implement anti-Shariah policy in the name of national women development policy although, they said, the Qur'an had clearly mentioned women's right to inheritance.

Among others, Maulana ATM Hemayet Uddin, Maulana Ahmed Ullah Ashraf, Maulana Touhiduzzaman, Maulana Mujibur Rahman Juktibadi, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Hafez Hafizur Rahman and Abdur Rab Yousufi addressed the rally.

Chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, at a function in the capital marking the International Women's Day on March 8, announced the National Women Development Policy that suggested setting aside one-third of parliamentary seats for women and arranging direct election to the reserved seats.

E-Bangladesh  correspondent in Chittagong reports: Several thousand Islamist activists brought out a procession in the port city on the day demanding withdrawal of 'anti-Islamic provisions' from the proposed National Women Development Policy. The activists gathered in front of Andarkilla Mosque under the banner of Greater Chittagong Quranic Law Protection Council, after juma prayers and marched down the street after holding a brief rally.

The speakers demanded that the chief adviser to the caretaker government should make a formal announcement withdrawing what they called 'the provisions against Qur'an and the Hadith' from the National Women Development Policy. They branded adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury an 'anti-Islamic element' and demanded her 'expulsion' from the cabinet.

[ALOCHONA] Ultra-secularists and their method of social genocide: A deadly combination in Bangladesh

Ultra-secularists and their method of social genocide: A deadly combination in Bangladesh

Thursday March 13 2008 14:00:47 PM BDT

Unfortunately, the development of secularism in Bangladesh took entirely a wrong route. Those who claim to be secularists in Bangladesh are often seen to maintain an extreme rebuff and a total antagonism towards a particular religion, which is Islam. Therefore, the development of secularism in Bangladesh started through an abnormal psyche, which is extreme opposition to and a deep-rooted desire of annihilating Islam and its symbols.

One of the conspicuous contours of Bangladesh politics these days is the hey-day of ultra-secularists. Secularism is a political ideology characterized by "this worldly orientation" and the separation of religion and the state. Though the ideology wants the religious dictations away from the state affairs, it does not necessarily negate or displace religion altogether. This sort of political ideology emerged in the Europe because of dire corruptions of Christian churches, and their conflict with science, which posed a great hindrance to development and progress. Most secularists in the West want this separation because of the religious obscurantism of the Church, but they want to confine religion in the private affairs rather than discarding or banning it entirely. They cherish a great love for Christianity and its millions of followers; however, think that the religion does not have enough political and social resources and philosophies to run a state in the era of democracy and pluralism. Nevertheless, almost every country in Europe and North America has religion-based political parties which incorporated democratic principles. Notable amongst them is the ruling party of Germany: the Christian Democratic Party.

They subscribe to their own brand of secularism not because Islam lacks political and social resources to run a state, but because Islam is the only religion that has the most comprehensive and humanistic political philosophies to run a modern state into an exemplary welfare mode. This is why these secularists devote their entire efforts not to propagate their political philosophy, but to oppose Islam and its active followers. In their writings, speeches and other political activities, they spend more time and energy in attacking Islam rather than presenting their own brand of secular philosophies. Therefore, they are not the secularists, but the "ultra-secularists".
The traces of this brand of ultra-secularism can be found in every epoch of human history. In order to get material advantages, they, as docile slaves of the dominant powers, always danced to their masters' tunes. After post-9/11 world where opposing Islam becomes a huge market currency to gain dominant power's blessings, these ultra-secularists currently become very desperate to oppose and attack Islam and Islamic political parties. For gaining favors and material benefits from the dominant powers by opposing those whom the dominant powers want them to oppose, they never hesitate to go against national common interests. Historically therefore they have been seen to remain docile and subservient to the dominant powers such as Moscow, Washington and New Delhi.
As they do not have appealing political philosophies to engage in fruitful and healthy dialogues with other political philosophies and thereby to gain public support, they usually take the alternative routes. One of the routes they take as we see these days is the "social genocide". What I mean by "social genocide" is a systematic effort to targeting a particular political community and deliberately ostracizing them through discursive concoction of lampoons and intentionally imposing negative and derogative connotations. These days, they vociferously use terms like "razakars" and "war criminals" targeting a particular party. Though the issue was resolved long ago, they again problematize a non-issue as "the most" crucial issue for Bangladesh. It generates the culture of extreme hatred, division, tension and retrogressive politics which are continuously driving our nation towards backwards, and posing a great hindrance to development and progress. Since many of these crack-brained ultra-secularists people are holding positions of power patronized by the axis of super-powers and controlling the sector of media, they are trying to divide the nation in a deeper manner to play a popular game of "divide and rule" taught by their colonial masters.
The first and the most common political decency which every political party should uphold is a mental readiness and a minimum tolerance to engage in dialogue with political opponents. These ultra-secularists are absolutely bereft of this primary ingredient of decency, as they already declared not to sit down with a particular political party. They desperately tried their method of social genocide to link that political party with JMB's militancy. Though they could not present any clue to prove their laughable claim, they still maintain their fanatical position. Since their political philosophy is nothing but an "obnoxious opposition" rather than meaningful democratic pluralism, what they say and claim are largely manufactured and intentionally constructed by their own. They posit themselves against fundamentalism; however, they themselves are imprisoned in the shackle of an abhorrent fundamentalism. Bangladesh is now submerged in a horrible impasse because of the deadly combination of these ultra-secularists and their method of social genocide.
