[mukto-mona] Re: M J Akbar sacked

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47249

To call M J Akbar a communalist would be erroneous in my opinion.
That does not, however, take away from the fact that both he and
Khushwant Singh, were little more than bootlickers of the Nehru-
Gandhi family through their careers. For Subimal to call both of
them "great journalists" is probably habitual - he is prone to
sweeping statements that are usually pathetic if not merely
ridiculous. But then, that is to be expected from a
closet "intellectual" who tries to sound profound.

Akbar was singlehandedly responsible for the death of "Sunday" a
magazine that he turned into a pro Rajiv Gandhi pamphlet during the
most difficult period in the history of India under the Congress. It
would take someone who was either ignorant or yet another sycophant
to forget the weekly harangues that Akbar put out to attack anyone
who was even remotely critical of Rajiv and the added sugary sweet
drool that he irrigated the scene with at the slightest mention of
Rajiv Gandhi's name. He was the one who brought Mani Sankar Aiyar, a
former IAS man turned AYA Ram Gaya Ram who went from the Congress to
the Trinamool Congress and back to the Congress only to be sacked
over trying to get a plum UN assignment for his daughter to Sunday as
a columnist.

Akbar was vehemently against the Shah Bano verdict. He sumpathised
with Rajiv's opening of the Babri Masjid. He lauded India's
disastrous intervention in Sri Lanka. The list goes on.

And what about Khushwant Singh? Yes, the very bootlicker who called
Sanjay Gandhi, fresh during his excesses during the Emergency, "a
most delightful goonda?" The same Khushwant Singh who set a trend in
sycophancy for Akbar to follow when he cheered the demolitions of the
homes of poor Muslims at the Turkoman Gate during the Emergency. The
same Khushwant Singh who lauded the forcible sterilization of Muslims
and who cheered when Sanjay Gandhi's thugs opposed the first Family
Planning Programme calling it "a waste of Hindu semen." The very same
Subimal Chakrabarty who finds it expedient to occasionally post
nonsense about atheism comes in to praise these two apologies for
human beings whom he anoints "great journalists".

Ah, well, everyone who sidles up to Khushwant has something to gain
from him. Some years ago, in a note to Outlook, I had to take David
Davidar and Khushwant on for exactly this kind of skullduggery. For
those interested, the story starts at this link:

http://www.outlookindia.com/rants.asp?date=02/04/2002&type=magazine

I wonder exactly what Subimal has to gain from jumping up and down
and clapping his hands in support of this duo of Nehru-Gandhi
sycophants?

Re: [ALOCHONA] Bengal reunification movement : A new game to delete Bangladesh

Dear Mr. Isha Khan

Very interesting!

But I am curious is Mr. Zainal Abedin a real person or a psuedonym. What is his background? Where does he work & for which media outlet. Nobody seems to have ever met him or seen him.  And yet he seems to write quite voraciously with such great imagination. Like Don Quixote the character from Cervantes novel who rages and battles windmills while imagining them to be exaggerated caricatures of his enemies.

Robin Khundkar

PS: Incidentally are you by any chance a descendent of the famed (or notorious based on your point view) Mughal Governor of Bengal Isa Khan who conquered Bengal for the Delhi based Emperor Aurangazeb.

Or is that a psuedonym too! And if it is why the choice of such a name. i would have thought a more nationalistic name would have suited better.

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Bengal reunification movement : A new game to delete Bangladesh

Bengal reunification movement : A new game to delete Bangladesh

By Mohammad Zainal Abedin

It is very strange to note that Indian government through its intelligence agency 'RAW' (Research and Analysis Wing) started a new game to reverse history of the subcontinent to pre-'47 era by deleting the sovereign and independent status of Bangladesh. To reunify British India, a small group of people of West Bengal of India initiated 'Bengal reunification movement'.

To attract public opinion these people that prominently include a minister of West Bengal Murtaza Hossin belonging to Muslim community and MLA Haripad Biswash belonging to Hindu community, outwardly initiated the movement through a 'March to the Bangladesh-West Bengal Frontiers.' They declared to organize public gatherings from February 1 to 12 ! in more than 62 key rural bordering points inside West Bengal adjoining Bangladesh territory. The movement works under the banner of 'People's Forum' whose ultimate goal is to form so called Bangladesh-Bharart-Pakistan Federal Administration. It is claimed that a number of Indian political parties and groups including

Janata Dal, Janata Party, Jamiatee Ulema-e- Hinnd, PDF, West Bengal Muslim league, extended their support to the movement. General Secretary of Forward Block Devabrata Biswash was the Chairman of 'March towards Frontier Programme.' All these information unveil one truth that the movement enjoys the blessings of Indian government. None would have ever dared to undertake such an ambitious and most risky step unless they would not have had the blessings of Indian government. Indian government generally implements such ugly anti-Bangladesh designs through its intelligence agency 'RAW'.

The press report of such movement drew the attention of the conscious sections! of the Bangladeshis living in home and abroad. Many of them expressed their extreme anguish and anxiety apprehending the gravity of such movement. They questioned who let loose these Indians, who also named an unknown Bangladeshi, to start such movement to merge an independent and sovereign Bangladesh with a province of India.

Reunification of divided territories or countries is not new. People around the world welcomed the reunification of South and North Vietnam, East and West Germany, North and South Yemen. All these countries were divided due to super power rivalry. Still they retained their independence and sovereignty when they were divided. But reunification of an independent country with a non-independent territory, which is a part of another country, has no precedence in human history. Reunification of divided Vietnams or Germanys or Yemen is not applicable in case of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Vietnam, Yemen and Germany were divided against the will and hopes and aspirations of the people of those countries. Such separations or divisions were the outcome of external interference or conspiracy.

But the British Bengal was divided according to the blue print, demand, guideline, and guidance of the then Hindu leaders. When the Bengalee Hindus of West Bengal being instigated by Nehru and other Hindu leaders opted to divide Bengal and merged the Hindu majority West Bengal with India, the then Muslim leaders, even some Hindu leaders like Sarat Basu, tried to save Bengal from division and they tried to have an Independent United Bengal without joining India or Pakistan. Gandhi and Nehru publicly demanded and declared if India was to be divided Bengal, Assam and Punjab must also be divided, so that the divided parts of Bengal and Punjab or Assam that would join Pakistan could return to India soon. Members of the then Bengal Legislative Assembly were divided on the status of Bengal. Muslim MLAs voted in favour of United Bengal having its capital in Kolkata providing equal rights and privileges to the

Hindus. But the Hindu MLAs opted for partition of Bengal to merge its Hindu-dominated areas with India apprehending that the Muslims in an Undivided Independent Untied Bengal would be slightly majority over the Hindus (106:100). Hindus were never ready any wellbeing of the Muslims. The opposition of the Hindus frustrated all the efforts of keeping Bengal undivided and united.

To comply with the demand of the Hindus the British Bengal was divided on the basis of referendum on the basis of the religious identity of the Muslims and the Hindus. The division was not imposed on them. They voluntarily divided their country and Hindu- majority West Bengal merged with India and Muslim majority East Bengal became a part of Pakistan naming it as East Pakistan that emerged as sovereign and independent country naming as Bangladesh in 1971.

Dismemberment of Pakistan changed the status of East Pakistan that led to the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country. Bangladesh since 1971 strengthened its independence and sovereignty and it is a viable country having equal status like all other independent countries of the world. On the other hand, West Bengal remained under India as its province and never tried to emerge as an independent country out of India. How a group of people of West Bengal who are not independent can propose and work to merge independent Bangladesh with a province of India?

In fact, India since 1947 continues its efforts to materialize the dream of reunifying British India which was divided on the basis of the demand of two major communities—Hindus and Muslims ( The India Doctrine, MBI Munshi, Bangladesh Research Forum, Dhaka ) Partition of British India became inevitable when the Hindu leaders like Nehru, Gandhi, Patel etc., were not ready to provide equal status and privileges to the Muslims. The Hindus compelled the Muslim leaders to opt for separate homelands for the Muslims. But the Hindu leaders failed to consume the partition and they keep their efforts continued to crush the Muslim countries of the subcontinent.

In 1971 they assisted the emergence of Bangladesh mainly to keep it under their occupation, but their blueprint failed to be implemented. So they took many more heinous designs to undo Bangladesh. The slogan of 'Epar Bangla Opar Bangla', 'Bangabhumi', 'United Bengal' etc all are directed to materialize their design of keeping Bangladesh under Indian paw.

The grounds and reasons that led to the partition of Bengal or the subcontinent still persist. The Hindus always treated the Muslims as their slaves. They never counted Muslims as their equal, rather their subservient, who did not allow sitting on chair, putting on shoe or using umbrella palanquin. They desired that Muslims should work for their wellbeing and comfort as their agricultural workers, boatmen, porters. Hindus never tolerated minimum wellbeing of the Muslims. This anti-Muslim, communal and inhuman sentiment still persists among the Hindus till date. For this reason after the 61 years of partition of Bengal or the subcontinent, Indian Hindus still endeavour to undo the separate homelands of the Muslims mainly to halt the prosperity of the Muslims and encage them to the slavery of the Hindus. The slogan of reunification of Bengal or 'Akhand Bharat' is raised out of this sentiment.

How an independent country can merge with a province of other country. This is only possible if West Bengal can achieve independence out of India. Then the two independent countries West Bengal and Bangladesh can work together to make an Independent United Bengal. But independent Bangladesh can neither merge with West Bengal nor India. We are ready to accept West Bengal if its people desire to merge with Bangladesh. Such initiative should be taken by the people of West Bengal, if they really desire so. Let them have their independent and sovereign country first and then come forward to make a United Bengal.

But such sentiment prevails in West Bengal. There is no any symptom of Bengalee nationalism in West Bengal. The Hindus of West Bengal believe in Indian Hindu nationalism. They accepted Hindi as their 'state language'. Bengali has already withered away from the urban areas of West Bengal. Even the rural people of West Bengal now use Hindi as their main language. They prefer to educate their children in English and Hindi. Bengali films and literary works have little market in West Bengal. There is no protest against the injustice and exploitation that are committed against the people of West Bengal. The industrially developed richest West Bengal of the

British period now is the poorest State in India. Murtaja Hosen and Haripad Biswash and their accomplices propose to merge flourishing Bangladesh with this poor State West Bengal of India. They are subservient to the non-Bengalee Marwaris and Hindi speaking rulers.

The proposal in its present form is not acceptable. It is a deep conspiracy against the separate identity, existence and independent and sovereign status of Bangladesh. The proposal is directed to degrade Bangladesh to the status of West Bengal people who are ruled by the non-Bengalee rulers under Indian nationalism. Indian nationalism is antagonistic to Bengalee nationalism.

For the last 37 years it was repeatedly proved that Indian government and its communal people cannot tolerate the existence of independent prosperous Bangladesh. Even the Hindus of West Bengal do not have any sympathy for Bangladesh and its people. There is no protest in West Bengal when the Indian government blockades the waters of the international rivers and does not release waters during the dry season when we need it badly for good crops, but let loose water during the rainy season to flood Bangladesh that inundates the country and damages its crops, roads and highways, industrial units and dwelling houses. We never heard of any protest in West Bengal when BSF without any legal reason kills our people living in the bordering areas. People of West Bengal, including its Chief Minister, become happy when India squeezes Bangladesh and designs to undermine our sovereignty and independence. West Bengal Chief Minister to please his New Delhi mentors frequently threatens Bangladesh without logical grounds.

How can Bangladesh merge with West Bengal which is not only dependent and where high anti-Bangladesh sentiment prevails all along? We heartily desire that West Bengal should get out Indian claws and be an independent and sovereign country. We are ready to provide moral support to the Bengalees of West Bengal if they sincerely try to get their homeland released and independent. We are ready to help them to upgrade them as sovereign nation. That will upgrade their status. We will be happy if they become independent whether they merge with us or not. That will be matter of mental satisfaction for us. Bangladesh cannot merge with those people so long they are ruled by the foreigners. Untill and unless West Bengal is liberated, any movement or proposal of merging Bangladesh with West Bengal will be considered as anti-Bangladesh conspiracy.*

[ALOCHONA] Human Rights Situation In Barak Valley In Assam

Human Rights Situation In Barak Valley In Assam
By Waliullah Ahmed Laskar

Moizun Nesa, a neighbourhood woman, informed Anowara and Sazna Begum that she had seen some five Central Reserve Police Force personnel going towards the field where Jamir Uddin was collecting grass. Three of them rushed to the field and saw Rezwan Uddin, who was known as CRPF informer, was asking 5 (five) CRPF personnel belonging to Gharmura Camp of E-147 company to shoot Jamir Uddin pointing his fingers towards the latter who was dumbfounded at the sight. At that moment Sazna, sister of the victim, and Anowara, wife of the victim, started to cry and beseech the men with arms to spare the life of Jamir Uddin at which they were also beaten, kicked, abused and humiliated. At the instance of Rezwan Uddin the CRPF fired a bullet targeting Jamir Uddin which was missed, the second shot also missed, but the third bullet hit on the back of the target, who had already started to run away, and piercing his chest exited. The critically injured victim was sent to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar where he was declared dead at 6-30 P.M that day. Thus, in a home invasion the said security forces shot dead Jamir Uddin Laskar, about 35 years of age, of village Bainchera (also known as Bhaichera) under the Katlichera Police Station in Hailakandi, Assam at about 10 am on 22 Oct, 2007. At the time of the incident the deceased was collecting grass to graze his cattle from a paddy field near his house where five CRPF men accompanied by one Rizwan Uddin accosted him. Such incidents have kept happening in Barak Valley.
Barak Valley is that part of the globe which is located in southern part of the state of Assam in India where about five million people live mainly on agriculture. Almost 80% people of Barak Valley belong to Bengali speaking Hindu and Muslim communities and others are Manipuri (Both Meitei and Bishnupriya), Hindi speaking people, Dimasa Khasi-Pnr, Hmar, Riang etc. while Assam, or for that matter the entire North East India is populated by nearly 70 ethnic groups.
The land now known as Barak Valley was in part an independent kingdom known as Cachar before the British annexed it to the empire in 1832 and the rest was a part of Sylhet district of Bengal. The districts of Cachar and Sylhet along with Goalpara were appended to Assam in 1874. At the time of partition in 1947 following the referendum as to the question of joining India or Pakistan held in Sylhet as per recommendations of the Redcliff Commission the area covering the jurisdiction of three and half police stations of Sylhet district joined India and the district of Cachar was formed of four sub-divisions, namely, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and North Cachar Hills. Later on North Cachar Hills was curved out form Cachar and annexed with Mikir Hills. Subsequently in 1983 Karimganj and in 1993 Hailakandi were declared separate of Assam. Now Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts are known as Barak Valley for their relative geographical and cultural unity after the name of the main river of the area.
After a few years of the independence of India the ethnic groups of North East India, a region rich with cultural and geographical diversity, tended to slacken ties with each other and the main land India. Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Arunachal were curved out from Assam and were made separate states. This politics of assertion and establishment of separate identity gave birth to the violent secessionist movements through the pangs of Language Movement of 1961 in Barak Valley, Assam Movement of seventies culminating in the Neelie Massacre of 1983 ultimately resulting in formation and operation of various underground outfits turning the region into a conflict zone. The battle field where the main casualties of the conflicts are security, justice, peace and human rights includes Barak Valley also. The valley being a free play ground of corruption, nepotism, political vested interests as well as illiteracy and poverty the human plight here got further worsened.
The human rights situation is very pathetic in the valley mainly due to some factors such as; firstly, draconian laws kept in force by the Indian State in the area. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, for example, empowers even a non-commissioned officer of force to shoot to kill anybody, if he is in the opinion that it is necessary to do so. They have got total impunity under the Act. Secondly, insensitivity of the other police forces towards the rights of the people. They still operate under colonial Police Act of 1860. Last but not the least is illiteracy and unawareness of the people regarding their rights and duties. A sample survey conducted by Barak Human Rights Protection Committee (BHRPC) indicates that 76% of the people don't know that they have the right to know the grounds of arrest at the time of arrest by a police officer. 78% of the people are not aware that an arrestee must be produced before the magistrate within 24 hours excluding the time of journey. 83% people have no knowledge about the right to free legal aid. 51% believes that it is the fate of an arrestee to be tortured mildly in police custody. 83% of those interviewed told that they think it is not wrong for an arrestee to be handcuffed in all circumstances. 87% of the people have no knowledge about the arrest memo. 65% think that police can arrest women even in the time between sunset and sunrise. So, it is no wonder that rights of arrestee are violated by the security forces in the one way or the other nearly in all cases of arrest, detention and during other pre-trial procedures.
As a result, there are innumerable cases of human rights violations by the security forces in the valley such as non-registration of FIR in genuine cases, implicating innocent people in trumped up cases, harassment and violence by the police in the name of search and raids, detention and arrest in false charges, use of excessive force in time of arrest even to the extent of causing serious injuries, tortures in custody sometimes leading to custodial deaths and rapes, opening fire leading to serious injuries and death in the face of slightest or no provocation, staging drama of encounters, enforcing disappearances and many other such form of violations and violence against the people showing utter disregard to the law of the land.
Some recent grave cases of violation of human rights perpetrated in the valley, which are documented by BHRPC, would drive home the points made above. So some of them are given below as samples:
1. Illegal detention of Hussain Ahmed Laskar
A senior citizen named Hussain Ahmed Laskar, S/o Late Twahir Ali Laskar of village Neairgram Pt.-I under Silchar Sadar Police Station in Cachar district in Assam was detained by the Officer-In-charge of the said police station at 3 Pm on 7/10/06. After some time, when he was contacted and informed of the fact, the Secretary General of Barak Human Rights Protection Committee visited the police station and came to know that the detainee had come to the Police Station to enquire about the charges of offences against one Habibullah Laskar and others. Mr. H A Laskar is a retired head master and a respectable person in his village. However, the Secretary General came to know that there is a police case against him vide Silchar Police Station Case No. 1208/06, although, the Hon'ble Gauhati High Court had accorded him pre-arrest bail regarding the case vide BA No. 2401 / 2006 dtd. 27-09-06. As the Secretary General smelt foul play in the offing on the part of the police against the detainee he guarded him physically till 2 AM. The senior citizen was kept sitting and standing and meted out rude behavior the whole night. Next morning a team from BHRPC led by Advocate Imad Uddin Bulbul, legal adviser to BHRPC visited the police station and rescued the detainee. He was detained illegally for about 23 hours by the police without following the required procedure of arresting persons established by law. The detainee informed that before the visit of Secretary General, police were pressing him hard for Rs. 10,000.00 (Ten thousand) only as the price for his release.
2. Death of Hashmat Ali Caused by Police in his Home
A daily wage labourer named Hashmat Ali, son of Imam Uddin of Vill. Burunga Part-1 under the Katigorha Police Station in the district of Cachar, Assam was killed by police personnel of Kalain Outpost in the intervening night between 40 April & 1st May'2007. It was not a case of mere shootout but it was a pre-planned action of home invasion. In-charge of Kalain outpost Sub Inspector Sewa Sinha led the invading police team which at about 11-30 pm attacked the house of the deceased and ferociously made their way into the rooms breaking the doors. They started breaking utensils and furniture and abusing, beating and humiliating the inmates of the house including women and children. Being terrified the deceased desperately jumped through the window and ran towards the paddy field. When he was about 200 metres away constable Tapan Hazarika opened fire and shot three rounds. Neighbours of the deceased testified that they heard three times the sound of firing. The deceased died on the spot. Police, without informing the family members, brought him to the Silchar Medical College & Hospital, Silchar. The doctors of SMCH declared him dead. The widow of the deceased was informed in the next day that her husband was getting treatment at SMCH. When she reached the Hospital the performance of autopsy of the body of her husband was complete.
3. Death of Pia Das and Harassment of Kiran Sharma in the Hands of Police
A young woman named Pia Das alias Piu Das, wife of Shankar Das of Atal Basti, Silchar under the Silchar Sadar Police Station in Cachar, Assam died abnormally at about 2.30 pm on 19th Apirl, 2007 at Silchar Medical College & Hospital, Silchar. She was married to Shankar Das in 2002 and they were blessed with a son now aged about four years named Rahul Das. Late Pia Das had suffered mental and physical torture in the hands of her husband and in-laws for her inability to satisfy their demand for dowry. Like many other day on that fateful day she was beaten by her husband mercilessly. Her husband struck on her head with a sitting stool for which she fell down and became unconscious and later, as stated above, she breathed her last in the hospital. Mother of the deceased Kiran Sharma went to Ghungoor Outpost to lodge a complaint on this issue on 22/04/07. The In-charge of the said Outpost Sub-Inspector Nihar Ranjan Das demanded her rupees 5000.00 (five thousand) only for registering the complaint as an FIR. Subsequently Kiran Sharma informed the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar about the circumstances in which her daughter died and demand of bribe by police. She also lodged a complaint in the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Cachar regarding the matter but no action towards enforcing her right to justice, truth and reparation has been taken.
4. Custodial Torture and Death of Motahir Ali
An innocent poor labourer named Motahir Ali Tapadar, 38 years, S/o late Akaddas Ali Tapadar of village Bhatgram (also known as Bhatghat and/or Brahmangram) under the Katigorah police station of Cachar, Assam died on 21 September, 2007 in the custody of police personnel posted at Kalain Police Patrol Post (PP). He was taken into custody on 20 September, 2007 by Narain Tamuli, the In-charge of the PP in connection with Katigorah Police Station Case No. 453/07 which charged him of assault to his co-villagers Sahabuddin and others. When Alimun Nesa, widow of the deceased, her minor son Salman Uddin and other co-villagers visited the PP, they saw Sub-Inspector Narain Tamuli, Assistant Sub-Inspector PR Nath and Constable Ramzan Ali were beating and torturing Motahir Ali in other manners brutally. When Alimun Nesa beseeched for mercy and release of her husband the police assaulted her and her minor son and others were threatened, taunted and bullied away. In the morning next day she again she came with her son to see her husband and she saw her husband was still being tortured and his condition had got very bad. Once again she wept and cried for mercy. This time SI Narain Tamul demanded form her a sum of rupees 10,000.00 (ten thousand) only for releasing her husband. At the expression of her inability to satisfy this demand the said SI canned her several times and even kicked her in the belly in her pregnant condition. Her minor son Salman Uddin was also assaulted. In the way police kept torturing Motahir Ali till he breathed last at about 1pm.
5. Destruction of Police Post by Police Themselves and Charging Innocent People
In the wake of the incident of torture and death of Motahir Ali Tapadar on 21 September, 2007 in the custody of police posted at Kalain Police Patrol Post under Katigorah Police Station in Cachar, Assam the police themselves set fire on the PP and Bhairavpur-Klain Gaon Panchayat office situated in the same campus and burnt them down in order to distract the attention of people from the death of Motahir Ali. Subsequently SI Biswajit Sinha registered Katigorah Police Station Case No. 455/07 under sections 147, 149, 447, 448, 336, 333, 436 and 307 of the Indian Panel Code, 1860 against Faruk Ahmed Laskar, president of Kalain Citizen Forum and other 500 (five hundred) unidentified persons accusing them of the very offences which were committed by police themselves. In connection with this trumped-up case the police conducted frequent raids, caused persecution and harassment to the people residing in the village of Bhatgram. Police also arrested Faruk Ahmed Laskar, Ibazul Haque Laskar, Imamul Hoque and Saidur Rahman Barbhuiya who were later accorded bail by the Gauhati High Court.
6. Serious Injury to Saidur Rahman in Police Firing and His Subsequent Arrest
A boy aged about 17 years named Saidur Rahman Barbhuiya, son of Abdul Nur Barbhuiya, Village: Dhumkar under Katigorha Police Station in Cachar, Assam was hit by a bullet in his left leg and seriously injured on 21 September, 2007. After the death of Motahir Ali Tapadar in police custody on 21 Sept. 2007 the people of Kalian gathered in front of Kalian police petrol post and demanded the arrest of Narayan Tamuli and other police personal who were responsible for the death of Motahir Ali. To disperse the gathering police opened fire and caused 80 rounds of firing at the order of Circle Inspector. P.S Das. At that time the victim was watching the incident from the roof top of a nearby two storied building when he was hit by a bullet and badly injured. He was admitted to the Silchar Medical College & Hospital, Silchar. After a little recovery when he was released from the hospital the police arrested him in connection with the Katigoraha P.S. Case No. 455/07, which was registered against the persons gathered in front of the PP and demanded arrest of the police personnel responsible for the death of Motahir ALi bringing false charges against them, showing utter disregard to the logic and common sense. Saidur Rahman was watching the incident from the roof top of a two storied building when he was hit. So, he can never be a part of the gathering for the dispersal of which police opened fire. Moreover, as per the claim of the police, they fired in the air in order to frighten away the crowd. If he was a part of the crowd it is clear that all the bullets are not fired in the air as they claimed.

7. Death of Jamir Uddin Caused by CRPF Personnel in a Home Invasion
In a home invasion 5 (five) Central Reserve Police Force personnel belonging to Gharmura Camp of E-147 company at about 10 am on 22 Oct, 2007 shot dead one Jamir Uddin Laskar, about 35 years of age, of village Bainchera (also known as Bhaichera) under the Katlichera Police Station in Hailakandi, Assam. At the time of the incident the deceased was collecting grass to graze his cattle from a paddy field near his house where five CRPF men accompanied by one Rizwan Uddin, who is known to be a CRPF informer, accosted him. His wife Anowara Begum, sister Sazna Begum and neighbour Moizun Nesa came to the place of occurrence after getting information. They saw and heard Rezwan Uddin was asking the men in uniform to shot Jamir Uddin pointing his fingers towards the latter who was dumbfounded at the sight. At that moment Sazna and Anowara started to cry and beseech the men with arms to spare the life of Jamir Uddin at which they were beaten, kicked, abused and humiliated. At the instance of Rezwan Uddin the CRPF fired a shot targeting Jamir Uddin which was missed, the second shot also missed but the third bullet hit on the back of the target, who had already started to run away, and piercing his chest exited. The critically injured victim was sent to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar where he was declared dead at 6-30 P.M that day.

8. Murder of Leela Begum and Subsequent Displacement of Her Mother and Children with the Abetment of Police
A widow named Leela Begum of Pangram Part-IV under the jurisdiction of Udharbond police station, Assam was strangled to death on 8 Nov, 2007. Kabirun Nesa, the mother of the deceased, was warned of grave consequences that she will be killed if she files complaint with the police. However on 14th Nov, 2007 Kabirun Nesa lodged a complaint with the chief Judicial Magistrate, Cachar regarding the incident. The Court of CJM forwarded the complaint to Udharbond police station for registration of an FIR and investigation. But the police did not respond. More over, Kabirun Nesa was driven away from the house of the deceased where she was staying and looking after the two minor children of the deceased. All of them now left the house to save their lives and was wandering here and there in the city of Silchar. Members of Barak Human Rights Protection Committee met them and took them to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Cachar separately on 20 November, 2007. Both the officials were urged by the organization to provide the victim with safety and security and to rehabilitate them in their house as they were rendered shelter-less. The officials were also requested to arrest the accused of the said murder case expedite the investigation of the case. But till date no action has been taken towards enforcing the victim's right to justice, truth, reparation and shelter. At the request of the organization a benevolent person of Madhurband, Silchar gave them temporary shelter.

9. Assault on Journalist Facilitated by the Wilful Negligence of Police
Abijit Bhattacharjee, reporter with Barak Television Natwork, Anup Das camera person of the same channel and another camera person was assaulted and injured by a group of hooligans when they ware covering on-going polling at Atal Basti J.P Das L.P school poll centre on 9th January, 2007 in Cachar, Assam in the presence of security personnel posted there. As the police remain silent spectators the attackers inflicted such grave injury to Abijit Bhattacharjee that he had to remain at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar for more than 14 days. However, an FIR was registered against the accused but none is arrested and no action has been taken against the negligent police personnel.
10. Rape in Silchar Medical College Campus
A minor girl named Rustana Begum of 15 years was raped in Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar at about 5 pm on 2/2/08. She was attending her mother Sunapakhi Bibi of Kanchanpur Pt-I, Hailakandi, Assam, who was undergoing treatment at the orthopedic department of the Hospital from 10th January, 2008. At the time of incident Rustana Begum was going to the canteen to fetch hot water for her mother. Two security guards named Rahim Uddin Mazumder and Bishawjit Ghose, both of whom hail from Masimpur, Silchar and employed by Barak Security Agency, a private security providing firm, which was providing security to the said hospital under contract, stopped her at the door of the room of Medical Record Department when she was going to the canteen to fetch hot water and forcibly brought her in Out Patient Department room which usually remain closed at such hour of the day and they committed rape alternately on her. All this happened before the eyes of Atul Das, a fourth grade employee of the said Hospital who remain a silent spectator. Shushantha Nath and Surendra Singh, the two in-charges of security at the said Hospital on behalf of the BSA, threatened the victim, her mother and her relative Abdul Mannan with dire consequences and asked them not to disclose the incident and inform the police. However, Sunapakkhi Bibi, the mother of the victim lodged an FIR regarding the matter vide Silchar Poloce Station Case No 208.08 dtd 6/02.08. Abdul Mannan also filed a complaint with the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Cachar regarding the threat to life of the victim, her mother and his own life under section 107 of Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 on 7/02/08.
In the present state of the things nobody hopes that the victims may be given their rights to justice, truth and reparation. Violators would not be brought to justice as there prevails a de juro as well as de facto impunity regime in the region. So the people would go on suffering at the hands of those whom they pay.

[mukto-mona] Re: 'Council of Ex-Muslims gives me hope'

Mr. Khan, Mr. Islam, and others,

I am sorry it took a while to reply to your following question:

Being Hindu yourself, did you renounce your own faith?

No contemporary religion makes total sense to me. These are just
faiths, no action can verify their authenticity; no knowledge can
prove their legitimacy. Therefore, in short, I have no faith in
faith-based religions.

Are you against religion in general or just Islam?

I am not against any religion, including Islam. You can follow
anything you want, why should that bother me? After all, it is your
life, do whatever you want, leave me alone. Let me say whatever I
think. If you do not like them then reject it. If you have counter
point, present it without provoking personal attacks.

You guys are angry at me because I congratulated Ex-Muslims. They
are Ex-Muslims, so what? I can show you thousands of Ex-Hindus
around me. That does not bother me at all.

You and few others are trying to portray me as anti-Muslim. You guys
have been saying that I carry 'OM' sign on my forehead. Where does
it come from?

I remember, Jaffor Ullah introduced this phrase and you have been
using that ever since. Well, last weekend, I went to that website
for the first time in my life. I saw my photo, with some others, and
the 'OM' sign on that webpage, but not on my forehead as you guys
have been portraying. That group picture was taken by someone from a
conference in New York at around 2001 – 2002. The conference was
organized by Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), USA
The topic was – "The plights of minorities in Bangladesh after 2001
general election." We invited Congresswoman Illena Ross, Co-chair of
the Indo-Bangladesh Caucus, as the chief guest. This group photo was
taken at the end of that conference. I was completely unaware of
that photo, being there on the website, until Jaffor Ullah
discovered it while checking on my background.

Time to time, I write articles on local newspapers, magazines, and
Souvenirs during Durga Puja festivals. In most of those articles I
try to express my views on what's wrong with Hindus, and Hinduism.
Many Hindus think that my views are anti-Hindu Dharma and anti-
Hindu.

I have never written anything about/against Islam because I do not
know much about that religion. Although, I have learnt a great deal
about it after 9/11.

I think one should criticize his/her religion from being within the
religion, not from outside. This way it becomes more genuine. No one
will take it seriously if someone from outside the religion
criticizes other's religion. I would be happier, if those Ex-Muslims
would have stayed in the religion and criticized the political
Islam. It was an error on my part to assume that they were still
within that religion.

I hope this will clear up, at least, some confusions about me.

Regards,

Jiten Roy

[mukto-mona] Taslima

I agree with Mr Sitangshu Guha on Taslima Nusreen's quit-India but differ with the following portion:"Its appeasing to militant Islamists & India did it again, where South Asia is heading?"

Salil Biswas, former principal, City College, and secular woman intellectual, Dr Miratun Nahar, who left the West Bengal Women's Commission, for its showbiz symoathy towards women at a seminar, organised by Kolkata-based Nagarik Samanvay that Taslima was deported from Kolkata not under threat from the Islamic obscurantists ( I dislike the word fundamentalist as fundamentalism is essentially academic). Dr Nahar, now reader in philosophy, Victoria College, narrated an incident. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee convened a meeting where she found only some Muslim representatives were present including some suspect communalists. She protested and remained mum throughout.
Prof Biswas pointed out that the content of letter from publishers to the Book Sellers & Publishers' Guild, organiser of Kolkata Book Fair, asking for ban on Taslima's books were fully identical. " It was obviously drafted by some bureaucrat".

So the threat was from the State.

[ALOCHONA] India's proposal for joint military operation

India's proposal for joint military operation

International Herald Tribune, on 25 February 2008, published the full text of Reuters' report on Gen Moeen's visit to India in which, about the topics of discussion, it was stated, "Moeen and his Indian counterpart would discuss steps to combat corruption and terrorism, and the possibility of joint operations against insurgent groups, other officials said". Please note the subtle mention of the expression 'joint operation' meaning joint military operation on the pretext of flushing out ULFA and rooting out Islamic militants. This report briefs the worldwide network of US-Israel-India axis about their intentions.

-----------------------------------------------------------
I refer to yesterday's report in 'Dinkal' and 'Naya Diganta' on human rights lawyer Attorney William Sloan of Canada, who revealed that the event of one-eleven 2007 was brought about according to a blue print, which he heard about from reliable sources in Dhaka in August 2005. He also claimed that the violent clash between BNP and BAL, the reckless demos, the emergency rule, the drive against corruption, the 'minus two formula', the attempted break up of BNP and BAL and creation of a new ruling party, which were all seen or implemented in 2007, were all planned beforehand, and he heard about these in 2005. This certainly is shock news to many.

Personally, I said the same things in many of my television appearances in the panels of talk shows in Bangla TV in London, which are broadcast all over Europe. Quite a number of times, I said that Harry K Thomas said in 2005 that third force would come to power, and so it did in 2007 through externally imposed political engineering, by developing violent conflict between BNP and BAL and there were hectic manoeuvres of some ambassadors, who even directly met and instructed the military chiefs. I also said that the powers behind the government are trying to break up BNP and BAL and form a new ruling party, which would be subservient to the US-Israel-India axis. The objective is to subjugate Bangladesh under US-Israel-India axis and plunder it. The dangerous axis has very, very sinister design indeed! But, they will have to honour the will of the people, if that will can be generated, united and mobilized. We will certainly win! In the TV programmes, I gave open calls for organizing resistance.

In 2003, India compelled Bhutan to accept joint military operations to flush out ULFA, and thereby subjugated Bhutan militarily, politically and economically. Bhutan buys arms from India and its army is trained by India. Bhutan will probably be annexed by India at some point as a total dependency.

India nurtures the same evil design to subjugate Bangladesh for military, political and economic gains. Especially, India now feels strengthened by the 2005 US-India military pact. On the other hand, Bangladesh has an agreement of military cooperation with China, which the US-Israel-India axis is allergic to. Amongst other things, India wants to supply arms to Bangladesh and train the army, as they are doing in Bhutan. They proposed the matter to Hasina Government in 1996, but it was quietly turned down. Neither Khaleda nor Hasina agreed to the sale of gas to India, three-country gas pipe line, transit, rail-road-river connectivity, container terminal leading to US military base, deep sea port on their terms, transit through Asian High Way, etc. This is the root cause of 'minus two' policy. Now, under the umbrella of emergency rule, Gen. Moeen has already conceded air transit, train service on humiliating terms and he discussed the dangerous agenda of joint military operation.

A few days ago, Condoleezza Rice suddenly rang international alarm bells about Harkat-ul-Jihad-i-Islam in Bangladesh informing the US allies that Bangladesh is a hub of international terrorism and therefore a target of Bush's crusade (the matter picked up by some media in Bangladesh; despite censorship and restrictions, for example: two editorials in 9 March's 'Amar Desh', one on Condi's HUJI-B alarm bell and the other about the course and nature of present politics in Bangladesh). The next day, daily 'Amader Shomoy', a supporter of the present military regime (albeit with a civilian face) and of India, forecast that there is likelihood of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh in the coming months. But HUJI-B was banned in 2005 and most of its leaders were sent to prison and some executed. Furthermore there are no recent reports of any significant activities of HUJI-B or any other Islamic militant groups. So why is this sudden international alarm bell? Are they going to stage the scenario by remote control?

Thus after political intervention of one-eleven in 2007, military intervention, in the form of joint-operation, cannot be ruled out. One-eleven in 2007 was brought about through political engineering, after Harry K Thomas announced in 2005 that third force would come to power, the announcement being to brief US allies and their network. Harry K Thomas has many talents, but he is not known to be an astrologer! Now their allies have been briefed of the agenda of joint military operation.

We must therefore be proactive. We must propagate and popularize the idea of resistance and prepare, so that if and when resistance is needed, the whole nation can stand up as one.

[mukto-mona] 30,000 inhabitants of Patenga being illegally & illogically captive by a Air-force base

Dear Moderator,
Good wishes to you. I am sending here with a write up, no news paper of Bangladesh dared to publish which. I hope mukto-mona will dare to publish it in favour of 30,000 inhabitants of Patenga being illegally & illogically captive by a Air-force base. No authority responded to save the aggrieved people who are in fact the sons of soil.

[mukto-mona] The Flower Business - Barison Begum is the first woman micro-entrepreneur

The Flower Business - Barison Begum is the first woman micro-entrepreneur.

Barison Begum is the first woman micro-entrepreneur in the field of floriculture in Patuapara, Jhikorgacha village, Jessore.

Why do you consider yourself to be a successful micro-entrepreneur?
There was once a time when I used to live in a little hut with my husband and five children. At that time we used to rely on the earnings from a small shop to feed a family of seven. All I could think of then was about how to increase our income. After seeing Sher Ali selling his flowers and making money, I decided to be a floriculturist. In 1999 my husband and I started growing flowers with tuberose seeds from Calcutta on 2 acres of land. I did well in my first year. Now we live in a much better house and have more disposable income. I am now responsible for feeding the families of all 60 of my workers and I have successfully raised the living standard of my family. I guess in general all that would make me a successful micro-entrepreneur.

Can you comment on the financial durability of your business?

The demand of flowers is high in the local and international markets. Flowers are used for decorating in all kinds on events, special days and celebrations. This causes a high market price. Floriculture is a very profitable business and I wish to expand. I do consider my business durable.
