[mukto-mona] Re: Transcript of Obama's speech in Philadelphia - Presenting Farida Majid as the latest Obama sycophant

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47382

What took you so long to jump in Subimal? You do need to offer your less than two bits' worth whenever someone behaves like a thug, in praising them.

IIRC you were the only member here who jumped in to offer Farida Majid
your support when she went round abusing other members on these forums.
Must be a case of birds of a feather flocking together. Or, more
likely, one of a sycophant for some clowns chafing at the bit for an opportunity to defend an obnoxious person.

Keep at it. You do well in playing a harlequin. It must be natural in
your case.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47372

Audrey,

Sycophancy and obnoxiousness come equally facilely to Farida Majid.
As a schoolmarm who routinely degrades her students over here while acting simultaneously imperious and imbecilic, she does not hesitate to
inflict her e-mails, whenever she makes a ridiculous comment on
forums somewhere in some vainglorious quest or the other, on people
who care two hoots about her nonsense in seeking their help in
defending herself.

Don't worry - she stormed off these very forums some time ago after
attacking a member here and spewing venom at him, when I questioned
her obnoxiousness. She was back as soon as she could be, primarily
because she loves the sound of her own voice. We'll see some more
nonsense from her in the future as well. Loudmouths can never do
anything other than inflict themselves wherever and whenever they can.

[ALOCHONA] Re: WB & IMF Destroyed Jute Sector: Experts

WB & IMF Destroyed Jute Sector- Comments

Abdul Mohan , UK

I knew about this. First of all Bangladesh has many other opportunities, I know what is happening to Bangladesh it is very bad. But recently our ship building industry is booming and can be the country\'s biggest export and technology pusher.

Bangladesh is fast becoming a major player in the global shipbuilding industry. Another private shipbuilding firm by the name of Highspeed Shipbuilding and Engineering Company received an order to build 8 ocean-going 'Ice class' ships for Hollander Scholtens worth $90 million. The vessels will be delivered to their Dutch customers by 2012.

"The local shipbuilding firm expects the order from Hollander Scholtens to increase to $200 million within a few years. It is expected that if successful the shipbuilding industry could overtake the garments sector rapidly."

That's 3-4 major national Private ship building firms that are estimating to get orders of 3-4 hundred million $ each orders!

If you look it at brief history this even happened to the US where its industry's have been vandalised and oppressed.

There two Bangladeshi pharmaceutical companies that are complying with the international agreement to stop using this a harmful chemical in inhalers that creates unnecessary side affects. There 15 companies in the world that are complying with this.

All I am saying that Bangladesh has got many more opportunities it may not be the best or the most profitable.

WB & IMF Destroyed Jute Sector: Experts

The World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a planned way are destroying country's jute sector in a bid to make Bangladesh foreign aid dependent and create India's jute export in the global market. "WB does not want to see Bangladesh grow as an industrial country. On the other hand WB maintains a good relation with India; it is encouraging the country to set up more jute mills.(The Bangladesh Today)

But at the same time it is pressurising Bangladesh to close down the jute mills. But we are surprised very much when we see that Bangladesh government is playing its role as a silent spectator. But our climate is very much favourable for growing of the finest jute in the world," economists, jute experts and political leaders told journalists at a press briefing held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday.

Under the banner of "Peoples Commission on Jute and Jute Industry" Economist Anu Mohammad, Justice Mohammad Golam Rabbani, Jute Expert Shah Alam and Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Shahidullah Chowdhury talked to the journalist about the latest condition of the jute sector.

They said at present, there are 22 jute mills under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation with over 43,000 workers and employees on its pay roll. Of them seven have already been closed down. Two are on the process of leasing out to the private sector, they said adding a few other jute mills are run by the private sector.

"At least 28 lakh ( 2.8 million )workers, employees and officials were directly and indirectly involved in the jute industries in 1982. But within 24 years, 27.5 lakh workers, employees and officials became jobless or retrenched following the closure of the jute mills," they added.

Expressing grave concern they said many jute industrial belts including Khulna, Sirajganj and Chittagong have turned into a bleak and desolate landscape with the workers, employees and officers of jute mills with their family members passing days without food, house and treatment due to nonpayment of salaries, leading to the deaths of nine workers from starvation.

It is learnt that in fiscal year 1972-73, Bangladesh had produced 0.45 million tonnes of jute products, but by 2005-06 fiscal production had declined to only 0.15 million tonnes. On the other hand Indian production had increased by nearly 60 per cent in the period to 1.6 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, the present caretaker government has decided in principle to cut the number of workers in public sector jute mills by 50 per cent to make the state-owned mills, now reeling under perennial losses, commercially viable.

It may be pointed out jute has once been the called golden fibre of Bangladesh and the farmers used to call it a cash crop. The previous government shut down the country's largest Adamjee Jute Mills due to mismanagement and corruption.

Meanwhile, a move is underway to disclose the list of corrupt suspects responsible for ruination of the jute industry this month. "We are continuing investigation at various levels to identify the corrupt suspects in jute sector and hope that the identity of many corrupt suspects would be disclosed this month", BJMC Chairman Ataharul Islam told The Bangladesh Today over phone on Sunday. Sources said inquiries are going on against store officers, Project Chief, Engineer, Accountants, Jute officers, Scale Man, Production Manager and Quality Controller under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC). There are massive allegations of misappropriating crores of Tk. against these officials who have pushed the jute sector on the verge of ruination, sources said.

Sources said the officials in the state-run jute mills have built magnificent houses at Gulshan and Banani. If enquiries are carried out fairly and are made public, corruption in the jute sector will come out, sources said. "We will at first recover the finance from the corrupt suspects and afterwards we will refer cases to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for taking legal action", the BJMC chairman said.

Re: [mukto-mona] RAB’s cocoon of terror

"All these people, who torture other people, do not think that their time to face the ultimate justice will come one day; it always does."

If we could be so sure of such an inevitability, the world would not need any police, lawyers, and courts. Moreover, no science can prove that this is a sure thing to happen. It can at best be a blind faith if not a consolation for a week person. Personally I would not encourage any one to be a fatalist to such an extent.

One can cite countless examples to show how the most notorious can escape justice and the most innocent suffer the most.

Total wastage of words! About 200 of them. Instead of using them to attack Farida Majid, Mehul Kamdar (by doing this Kamdar has committed some "akam"--- to use a Bengali word) could have used them to explain why he thinks that the latter is wrong in praising Obama. I don't think any one in the forum is interested in learning the biography or 'jeebon-chorit" of a fellow mukto-mona.

[mukto-mona] Obsession with Kashmir impasse

Prafull Goradia, general secretary, Jana Sangh, is obsessed with the Kashmir lemma which is not the priority at this moment. Still he refers to some interesting points.
Sankar Ray

Valley of no returns 26 Mar 08 (http://dailypioneer.com/indexn12.asp?main_variable=OPED&file_name=opd2%2Etxt&counter_img=2)

Prafull Goradia

Civil society in Pakistan has realised that the Kashmir issue is indispensable for the Pakistani Army to sustain its all-powerful role

It was reported that Pakistan successfully proposed an anti-India resolution at the recently held OIC summit in Dakar, Senegal. The crux of the proposal was to express concern at the burning political dispute over Jammu & Kashmir and the alleged violation of human rights by India in the Valley.

In my own experience, traders from Jammu & Kashmir do protest against paramilitary oppression. At the same time, they confirm that the treatment of the then East Pakistan at the hands of Gen Tikka Khan was an unthinkably cruel genocide. They would dread the State going into Pakistan, although they would prefer an autonomous, preferably independent, Kashmir.

At a seminar held at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in March, the Pakistani delegation led by a former Foreign Secretary asserted that Jammu & Kashmir continued to be a core issue in India-Pakistan relations. Instead of countering their argument, I made a request to them that if the delegates were appointed the final arbiters over the Kashmir dispute, what would be their specific prescription? They went round and round but gave no answer as to what, in their one-sided view, the solution would be. In between lines, the message was there was no Pakistani solution any more.

In the heyday of Krishna Menon eloquence, it was an India versus Pakistan match over Jammu & Kashmir. Islamabad, however, appears to have now realised that the Kashmiris do not wish to join Pakistan. If the Valley were handed over to Pakistan, the turbulence would increase rather than disappear. A number of vested interests have grown around Jammu & Kashmir being a part of India. If the Valley cannot be with Pakistan, what is the sense in fighting for it merely for the sake of human rights?

The civil society has realised that Jammu & Kashmir was one of the indispensable tools for the Army to justify itself in a powerful role. The dispute was given an India-Pakistan colour and obviously India would then be a large enemy. Therefore, how could the people of Pakistan feel safe without a dominant role being enjoyed by the soldiers. This feeling has surfaced widely as opposition to Gen Pervez Musharraf's dictatorship grew. Pakistan has now no use for Jammu & Kashmir. Only the military has a vested interest. Those who think of democracy have no real interest left in the Valley.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah had offered a permanent solution to the Hindu-Muslim issue in the sub-continent. The more we look back at the past 60 years, the more we will realise how expensive it has been to ignore the wisdom and vision of Jinnah. If we had only listened to him, there would been no Kashmir problem, therefore no 1965 war, no real provocation for the 1971 war and no Kargil.

The benefits of listening to Jinnah would have gone far beyond the military savings. There would have no problem of over population. A great deal of urban land would have been available for free use by the society; after the state, the largest urban landholders in India are the wakfs. The enormous expenditure that is made by the Centre and the States on minority education, madarsas et al would have been unnecessary. There would have been no continuing influx of Hindus migrating to India from Sindh as well as Bangladesh. The Pioneer (March 9) reported how thousands are using the Thar Express to escape into Rajasthan with or without documents.

However, the greatest damage done by the India-Pakistan bitter relations has been New Delhi's obsession with Pakistan. The world image of our country would have been much larger if only we had not offered the opportunity of being continually compared with Pakistan.

As recorded in volume IX of The Transfer of Power 1942-47 edited by Nicholas Mansergh, Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and Penderel Moon, Jinnah made a forceful reference to the exchange of populations to be considered seriously. He asserted that he was not fighting for Muslims when he demanded Pakistan; he added, Pakistan and Hindustan alone mean freedom to both Hindus and Muslims. Jinnah had also made direct request to Viceroy Wavell for an exchange of population.

A virtual doctrine regarding an exchange of populations was developed by a committee of the League of Nations headed by no other than former Viceroy Lord Curzon. The doctrine was implemented by the Treaty of Lausanne signed on July 24, 1923, by the European powers. It was the ultimate outcome when it was widely realised that all the earlier arrangements made with the Ottoman empire for the protection of minorities were blatantly violated. Probably because Islam did not appreciate the concept of a minority. Fortunately, the treaty was implemented thereafter in both Turkey and Greece. Earlier a similar exchange had taken place between Bulgaria and Turkey. It is possible that Jinnah's proposal was inspired by this European experience.

[mukto-mona] Britain Targets Muslim Women to Fight Extremists By REUTERS

FYI

<<...A British government-funded study by consultant Nazia Khanum in early March found that in one town alone -- Luton, where the largest ethnic minority is Pakistani -- there were more than 300 approaches a year to external bodies for advice of some sort on forced marriage.

In Luton, as in other towns and cities in northern England, the Asian community is largely segregated from the white, and concerns are mounting over the number of girls whose parents are removing them from education in order to marry them off.

Britain's Forced Marriage Unit receives more than 5,000 inquiries a year and last year intervened in 400 cases, many of them people forced into marriage with someone from overseas.

"Since it is mostly men who are perpetrators of forced marriages and domestic violence, the education of men is essential as a preventative measure," Khanum's report said.  >>

Britain Targets Muslim Women to Fight Extremists

By REUTERS

Published: March 25, 2008

LONDON (Reuters) - In a school in south London, women in headscarves are learning English, childcare skills and citizenship, to smooth their integration into British life.

The courses are encouraged under a new government policy to "empower" Muslim women, ultimately to combat the threat from Islamist violence, a threat made brutally clear when four homegrown suicide bombers killed 52 people in London in 2005.

Triggered by events from racial violence in northern England in 2001 to the London bombings, British policy on ethnic minorities has shifted from a "laissez-faire" approach to encouraging integration or "community cohesion," said Rick Muir, research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research.

But Shazia Qayum's story illustrates the obstacles still to be overcome in a country with more than 1.6 million Muslims.
Qayum, who lives in the northern city of Derby, says her family kept her away from school for a year at age 15, planning a forced marriage to a Pakistani cousin.

She ran away from her family after her marriage: now aged 28, she works with women who are undergoing similar experiences: "In the eyes of my parents, I am dead," she said.

"The surprising thing ... is that no one asked the question where I was. No one from education welfare. No one from social services and no one from the police."

This sort of alienation and isolation is one problem that the "empowerment" scheme could address.

The policy's backers say the main goal is for Britain's estimated 800,000 Muslim women to become more influential in their communities, which might stem the threat from disaffected young Muslim men.

"Muslim women have a unique role to play in tackling the spread of violent extremism," Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said as she unveiled the plan, backed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

"I want to see more done in communities to build the capacity of Muslim women to shape their communities and to engage with disaffected groups."

It's a message that resonates with the women at the Bellenden Old School in south London, but the policy has been denounced as patronizing and clumsy by some Muslim leaders.

"I know I can offer something to this country," said Ines Meddah, a 26-year-old Algerian lawyer at the London school. "But sometimes I feel like I am in a prison because I struggle to share my know-how."

ALIENATION

From a new citizenship test for people seeking to live in Britain to a recent suggestion that young people swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen, the pressure to integrate is mounting -- but it faces complex and deep-rooted obstacles.

In a document published in January, Blears highlighted figures showing almost two-thirds of Muslim women in Britain are "economically inactive" -- as opposed to about a quarter of all women.

Her plan would see tens of millions of pounds spent through local communities to raise their involvement.
"We want the government to help those who are educated who want to (achieve) something in this country," said Meddah, who has lived in London for two years.

But despite visible backing for the scheme from Brown, some Muslim community leaders are alienated by the way it has been presented.

"Why is it that anything that has to do with Muslims, has to do with terrorism?" said Reefat Drabu, Chair of the Social and Family Affairs Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain.
While in favor of female empowerment, she said linking it with reducing the threat of terrorism was ludicrous.

"If they want to combat terrorism, they really need to get out of their denial and realize that they need to look at the policies, as far as foreign policies, policies at home, domestic policies to win the hearts and minds of people," she said.

At the heart of the issue is the rise in tension between Muslims and other Britons since the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, the 2005 London attacks and thwarted car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow last year.
The Muslim Public Affairs Committee, which calls itself Britain's largest Muslim civil liberties group, said Blears' initiative was missing the larger point -- discrimination.

"What Blears seems to fail to recognize is that women are unequivocally recognized by Islam as the moral authority in their homes," the organization commented on its Web site. "They do not need condescending advice on how they can better fulfill their roles in this sphere."

Another Muslim scholar said the scheme was ill-conceived.
"What does the government mean to say when they want to empower Muslim women? Against whom or what? Their men and their 'traditions', of course," said Professor Werner Menski,
chair of the Centre for Ethnic Minority Studies at SOAS.

"All this talk about wanting to listen will throw some money at a problem that is far bigger than just women's empowerment."

TRADITIONS

The women at the London school -- from countries as culturally diverse as Somalia, Iran, Algeria and Syria -- urged against generalizing Muslim experiences in Britain and in so doing propagating common prejudices.

"One must not put everyone in the same basket," Meddah said. "Here there are pharmacists, teachers, engineers, we are not extremists. We just want to have a good life, that's all. We want to live well in this country."

In pockets of some Asian communities in Britain, the notion of "empowering" women is directly opposed to imported rural traditions restricting their roles. In extreme cases, women's lives may be at risk if they try to break the mould.

A British government-funded study by consultant Nazia Khanum in early March found that in one town alone -- Luton, where the largest ethnic minority is Pakistani -- there were more than 300 approaches a year to external bodies for advice of some sort on forced marriage.

[mukto-mona] Taslima-Other view

Although many of you and I differ with this article on Taslima - not because the author's anathema towards the Communists - I think we should patiently listen to all views.
Sankar Ray

Sending off Taslima was a good idea by NN Sachitanand  25 Mar 08  (http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1157569)

Normally, I beg to differ from the Communists. But not in their treatment of writer Taslima Nasreen. Buddhadev & Co. were so right in giving that pesky woman the boot from pristine West Bengal. She was a threat to peace in the state — worse than the Naxals.
Did you observe the righteous anger blazing in the eyes of those rioting youth who were baying for her blood on the streets of Kolkata? If the state government had not quickly swung into action, she would have totally alienated a huge vote bank of the CPI(M). And no political party can tolerate that. And, mind you, this single canker of a woman is not even a citizen of this country.
Yes, yes, one has heard of the Communist Manifesto upholding equal rights for women. Doesn't Brinda Karat get to air her views on the tube whenever the channels want a more personable Left spokesperson than the usual octogenarians? But India is a multicultural nation and the Left cannot impose its notions of equality between the sexes on others. So, it was more judicious to jettison Taslima than provoke the wrath of the mullahs.
After all, she belonged to their faith, not that of the Left.
Please note that the CPI(M)'s approach was fully endorsed by the Congress-led central government which incarcerated the problematic woman. If the CPI(M) did not want to handle a hot potato, neither did the Congress — or for that matter, any other political party. Quite correctly, she has been sent to foreign climes where the most damage she can do is blabber to the international media. And, since Taslima is no Rushdie in terms of literary fame, even this spark of international attention will soon splutter and die out.
In a country where it is the norm to abort female foetuses, keep girls illiterate, burn brides for inadequate dowry, clobber wives regularly in a drunken rage, tease young women on the streets, coerce poor women into prostitution, treat divorcees as whores and confine widows to a dark corner of the house, what right do we have to lionise a lone alien woman, even if she is a writer? All right, all right, we have a tradition of placing women on a pedestal and revering them. But, hey, they should be goddesses or figures from the distant past, not flesh and blood creatures of the present who can upset our peace of mind.
Pranabda was so right. Removing the Taslima thorn and casting it abroad was the correct approach. Her flight has hardly caused a ripple. Even the usual brigade of vocal female dissenters in this country have chosen silence. Perhaps it is because she was cast out by the Communist West Bengal and the secular UPA and not Modi's Gujarat. Considering an attention span of 24 hours for TV news channels and about three days for newspapers, we can safely assume that Taslima will disappear from our minds within a week.
Come to think of it, why are we hanging on to that other thorn which is causing such anguish to our Leftist brethren and their mentors north of the Himalayas? The Dalai Lama has been a pain since he took shelter here five decades ago. He and his followers have made the Dragon breathe fire at us again, just when we were forgetting the singeing of 1962. We can't even threaten to boycott the Olympics since we hardly have anyone to send anyway.
There is only one thing to do. Go back to primitive practices which dictated that when the gods are angry offer them a sacrifice to placate them. Send the Dalai Lama to Beijing. As a return favour, the Congress can ask the Left to support the nuclear deal, however unclear it be. Thus, the country will be rid of a major embarrassment, India's new mentors will be happy and the UPA can continue its merry reign.
The writer is a commentator on public affairs

[ALOCHONA] What's happening? Where are we going? Where are we in?

http://www.manabzamin.net/lead-01.htm

Thank you for your reply.

What do we know today that the ancients didn't know? How far advanced
are we in terms of learning how to deal with each other? Are we
doomed to struggle forever with death and destruction? Or, are we
making progress, in some small way?

Dear MM members,
how are you all?

for the last 3 weeks, I've been interviewing a holocaust survivor.
i am also preparing a long report on this interview.

as a Bangladeshi citizen, i open my passport and see that we are not allowed to go to Israel.
i do not know anything about the origin of this law; but it is essential that i find out, since i would like to discuss this issue in my report as well.

can anyone help me to understand this issue better by sending me their own opinion, internet links, book titles, etc.

please email me at:  salmansultan2001@yahoo.com

when my report is ready, i would send it to MM for publication.

thank you
Salman S.
