Yes, come up with another piece of bunk when you cannot offer any
sensible response to the many points raised. Clownish attempts at
appearing sophisticated are par for the course when the objective in
posting is to entertain and not to inform. Do I sense that the attitude
indicating a farcical omniscience is wanting, especially with this
pathetic attempt at humor? Or, have the sales gimmicks for the new
messiah cum electoral product cum savior of the world cum everything
else that you and the rest of the sheeple want to speak about begun to
dry up?

[mukto-mona] Fwd: Hi. As discussed I am sending the memorandum for Mr. Ambassador. Thanks.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Sitangshu Guha <guhasb@gmail.com>

Subject: Hi. As discussed I am sending the memorandum for Mr.
Ambassador. Thanks.
To: Bangladesh Desk, State Department

Hon. Mr. James F. Moriarty
Ambassador
Embassy of the United States of America
Dhaka, Bangladesh

Subject: Issues concerning ethnic and religious minorities of Bangladesh

Honorable Ambassador:
The Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, USA, would like to present
to you a short brief about the condition of ethnic and religious
(roughly 20 millions of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians) minorities
in Bangladesh as you have been appointed the U.S. Ambassador to
Bangladesh. Before you head to Bangladesh, we sought an urgent meeting
with you. Citing short notice as a reason The State Department
declined our request. However, we congratulate you on your appointment
and we hope that your tenure in Dhaka would be very fruitful and will
bear long-term success in the region.

We are a human rights advocacy group that consists of American
citizens who have originated from religious minority and tribal
communities in Bangladesh. Minorities in Bangladesh are roughly 15% of
the population. Numerous analysis of the population groups in
Bangladesh show that minorities are more educated, skilled, secular,
culturally moderate and law abiding than the majority Muslims in
Bangladesh. However, they lag the majority in every economic
indicators such as employment in the gov't sector, recruitment into
elite institutions (civil and defense), home and land ownership, per
capita income and savings, etc. It is because the ethnic and religious
minorities are routinely persecuted, tortured, raped and murdered by
the militant Islamists who desire to transform Bangladesh into a pure
Islamic country. In addition, often the government is in direct
complicity with the Islamists to commit this carnage by unleashing the
suicide bombers on ordinary men, women and children.

In recent years, we met many officials of different agencies of your
government, including the State department, and apprised them of the
unspeakable horror the minorities are subjected to and sought their
help. Various agencies of US government undertook numerous
fact-finding missions and published reports ascertaining our claims in
their annual country reports. However, there is no relenting on
violence against minorities. Rape, torture, forced conversion; forced
eviction and dispossession of properties, loot, arson, desecration,
and kidnap are all too pervasive in every part of Bangladesh. Moderate
Muslims, artists, journalists, and human rights activists are also not
spared of the onslaught. The attacks are so senseless and so violent
that they not only run counter to common sense and rule of law but
also call to question our spirit and very existence as civilized
people. As a result people are giving up on their motherland and
fleeing to much uncertainty abroad, mostly to India, leaving the
country in the hands of fanatics, suicide bombers, and gun runners---
a shivering thought for the general public.

Just after 35 years of its birth as a secular country, Bangladesh has
become a breeding ground for the militant Islamists. According to
experts and independent news reports, the international terrorist
outlets have already set up more than 150 bases in the country where
the Muslim youths are recruited and readied to commit terrorist
activities throughout the world. In Bangladesh, ethnic and religious
minorities are bearing the huge brunt of this terror. In the past 35
years minorities have been disposed of more than 2.5 millions acres of
prime real estate, hundreds of thousands of girls and women raped,
tens of thousands of churches and temples burnt or desecrated, and
millions of people driven out of the country, No previous political
government has shown any inclination to address this issue of serious
breach of human rights, constitutional protection, and equality rights
for all.

Therefore, the formation of the present "Caretaker government" came as
a welcoming relief to us. The government came in power with a pledge
to root out corruption, to put a leash on rampant lawlessness, to
promote civilized political environment, and to reclaim "secularism"--
the country's founding principle to ensure equal treatment for people
of all faiths. The policies of past governments proved to the world
how the forward march of a nation can be brought to a screeching halt
when the government policies are not implemented even-handedly and are
ill intentioned.

More than a year has elapsed since this government has been in power.
Day by day, it is becoming very evident that this government is
pursuing an agenda that does match its rhetoric. It has not
implemented a single reform that would ensure equal rights for all its
citizens. If the past performance of this "limited" government is any
indication, we fear that this government is heading towards a
catastrophic failure.

Bangladeshi minorities in past election cycles, especially in 2001,
endured tremendous violence perpetrated by the recently ousted BNP
government and its Islamists allies. Minorities were threatened, or
otherwise discouraged not to go to the polls. In many polling,
districts minorities were purged from the voter lists by the
authorities aligned with the Islamists. Sadly, this government has not
done anything to remedy those problems to ensure participation of the
country's minority population in the election. Furthermore, the
present government has not launched any investigation into the
unspeakable crimes committed against minorities for years. We know of
no plans that this government is interested to bring the culprits to
justice. Government has not indicated to provide compensation to the
victims of atrocities either. This government came to power with a
specific task to hold free and fair election with a reasonable period.
However, we have not seen any plausible action plan that will prevent
further atrocities on minorities following the elections (both local
government and parliamentary elections).

The issue of Enemy Property Act is still used as a tool of choice to
marginalize us. In the past 40 years, minorities of Bangladesh have
been dispossessed of more than 2.5 millions acres of land properties
through this government sanctioned scheme or so called the Enemy
Property Act, a discriminatory act by the Government against its own
citizens. This discriminatory law has affected millions of Hindus in
Bangladesh. The "Defense of Pakistan Rules" branding Hindu citizens of
the country as the enemy was enacted by Pakistan during its war with
India in 1965. Nevertheless, with a twist of irony, that infamous
decree found its way to become an instrument of persecution in the
independent Bangladesh. Bangladesh fought a heroic war against
Pakistan and earned its independence. Today, Bangladesh is neither a
part nor a successor of Pakistan. Also neither Bangladesh nor India
waged or declared any war against each other" Therefore, how enemy of
Pakistan becomes enemy of Bangladesh? Alternatively, is Bangladesh
after gaining independence with the direct military help of India
remains at a state of war with India? Therefore, we request you to use
your government's influence on the current administration to repeal
this discriminatory law and help the country's minorities regain their
lost rights.

The indigenous people of Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT) had been
demanding autonomous status for a long time. They once vowed armed
resistance to stop infiltration of nationalists into their
territories. After years of fierce arms resistance against the
Bangladesh government forces the indigenous people of CHT entered into
a peace treaty with the Bangladesh government that stem the bloodshed
in the area. However, after almost a decade, the peace treaty is yet
to be implemented.

Hon. Ambassador, we look forward to your action on those issues of
immense importance for the survival of the minorities in Bangladesh.
The United States is known throughout the world as a beacon hope and a
Freedom & Liberty's steadfast angel. Our sufferings have been well
documented by all respected international organizations. We hope you
will take special interest on the minority issues while in Bangladesh.
We are confident that you and America will not fail us.

Sincerely,
Ratan Barua, President
Nabendu Dutta, President
Thomas D. Roy, President
Sushil Saha, Secretary
Pradip Das, Secretary, Youth & Students Front
Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, USA (BHBCUC, USA).

Commentary Magazine

Blasphemers, Unite!

Michael J. Totten Web Exclusive

Michael J. Totten is a freelance writer and blogger who has reported from Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Cyprus, Turkey, and Israel. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, LA Weekly, Reason, and numerous other publications

Egypt's Grand Imam Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi threatened "severe" consequences if the Dutch government doesn't ban Parliamentarian Geert Wilders' anti-Islamic film Fitna. It makes no difference to Tantawi and other perpetually outraged Islamists that the Netherlands is a sovereign country with its own laws. Ever since Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini condemned Salman Rushdie to death for writing the supposedly offensive Satanic Verses – and sent death squads after him and his publishers around the world – radical Islamists have seen it as their right and duty to enforce their own unilateral anti-blasphemy laws on the human race. (Meanwhile, liberal American Muslim Aziz Poonawalla hosts Fitna on his own Web site even though he, as should be expected, doesn't like it.)

Fitna isn't the only recent movie hard-line Islamists hope to squelch beyond their own borders. The other is Persepolis, an animated film based on Iranian author Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel of the same name about repression under both the Shah Reza Pahlavi and the Ayatollah Khomeini. General Wafik Jizzini at Lebanon's Ministry of the Interior banned it because, he said, Shia officials (read: Hezbollah) said it was offensive to Islam and – you guessed it – Iran. Islamic Republic officials and their proxies are true to form here, considering it was they who kicked off the international anti-blasphemy campaign in the first place.

"The heart of every culture-loving Lebanese breaks with every ban," writes Abu Kais, a Lebanese Shia who lives now in Washington and writes the indispensable blog From Beirut to the Beltway. Beirut is a genuinely cosmopolitan and culturally rich city, more so than any other Arab capital. And Lebanon, true to its form, fought back. Tarek Mitri, Lebanon's Minister of Culture, managed to overturn the ban and get Persepolis on the big screen after all.

It's too bad Fitna and the reaction to it sucked all the media oxygen out of the room. I haven't seen Geert Wilders' short film, but he's sounds like a reactionary who makes a poor poster boy for free expression (he wants to ban the Koran in the Netherlands). He not only thinks radical Islamists shouldn't be able to buy their own copy, but neither should moderate Muslims or people like you and me who might want to study it for our own reasons. The man has a death threat hanging over his head from nutjobs the world over, as do employees at the Internet company LiveLeak that hosts the film, yet an enormous amount of the public discussion revolves around whether or not his film is offensive. It is offensive to some people, including many reasonable people. But that's beside the point.

The fight over Persepolis in Lebanon is more straightforward than the one over Fitna in the Netherlands. Geert Wilders and his politics are distractions, but Marjane Satrapi and her film are not. She isn't accused of having her own censorship agenda with a different target package, nor does she appear to be an extremist of any variety. Persepolis has won a long list of prestigious awards. If the Iranian regime can have it even temporarily banned in another country, this is a serious problem. Don't assume threats of violence weren't behind it. Hezbollah is Iran's private army in Lebanon. When the regime issues orders to Beirut, threats need not be leveled. They're assumed.

The important question here isn't whether Fitna or Persepolis is offensive. Offensive movies will always be with us. The real question is: what's to be done about it?

I don't know. But I hope the United Nations won't be consulted. At the same time international campaigns were launched to shut down these movies, the United Nations Human Rights Council – in true Orwellian fashion – passed a resolution against "the defamation of religion" and suggests governments pass laws to stop to it. If freedom of expression – which includes the right to blaspheme the Gods – isn't a human right, then human rights do not exist. Lives are at risk here, as are good movies and bad. It ought to go without saying that the United Nations Human Rights Council ought to concern itself with reducing threats to human rights rather than join the extremists and make threatening noises of its own.

[ALOCHONA] Indecisive govt. losing peoples' support

Indecisive govt. losing peoples' support

Sadeq Khan
Public disaffection for Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed's caretaker administration is growing fast and running deep. Members of that administration in bulk appear to be unwilling horses, resentful of those in the driving seats. To common citizens, they appear to be habitually distant, wilfully inhibited and woefully indecisive. With the best of measures, like in fertiliser procurement and distribution, something has been going wrong somewhere or other, and generating fume of discontent.

With bungled measures, like in the case of the government's rice-reserve procurement from abroad, the record is pathetic. The relevant ministry turned a deaf year to early warning from some food policy experts last July to begin procuring food grains when global market prices were still low and big deficits were projected. The caretaker advisers have now decided to make a panic purchase of 4 lakh tons from Indian state-trading companies at the approach of the boro harvest. The government has done so as captive buyer at an unaffordable price of $430 ton, stipulating supply within 60 days of contract. The Indian supply will coincide with the height of boro harvest.

Some have labelled that purchase decision unwise. The fear is that import-price parity will push up the home market price in spite of more than adequate supply for the season from the new harvest compared to home demands. Civil society stalwarts, including the well-known faces of the Economic Association, have supported that purchase decision speculating uncertainty of domestic procurement prospects from the coming boro harvest and taking into account continuing trend of high cereal prices in the world market. Some also smell a rat.

Indeed the enormous goodwill and popular applause with which Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed's caretaker regime embarked on its journey, along the roadmap of its own making, has been all but exhausted. Uncontrollable hike of commodity prices on account of oil price shocks in the global market was certainly the main contributing factor for popular disenchantment with the regime. But so were the micro-economic dislocations suffered by the public on account of indiscriminate, in stead of exemplary, use of the coercive power of the state by the regime in the name of law-enforcement.

Further cause for aggravation and exasperation has arisen from what is widely perceived as diversionary drills by some in the driving seats of the caretaker administration. Their veiled but persistent encouragement for invocation of bitter memories of the past only remind people of the horrible days of political violence that led to the state of emergency, and make people apprehensive of a relapse of civic disorder. The caretaker advisers, by letting themselves be carried away by lofty slogans of NGO activists or dead issues of lime-light seekers, simply appear to the public to be both insensitive to current needs of the people and obtuse about the priorities of the nation.

What is more disturbing is the fact that common people are beginning to lose faith in the administration's sustained capacity to ensure safety of life and property of citizens. Criminal gangs are again out on the prowl. Curse of unemployment in cities and villages alike are engendering law-breakers of all sorts. A creepy feeling of insecurity and hopelessness is beginning to numb people's minds. Here and there, incidents occur and recur to nudge that nasty feeling.

On March 28, train communications between Dhaka and other parts of the country were disrupted for an hour and a half as a huge quantity of REC-elasted rail clips along a stretch of some two kilometres from the Banani level crossing to the Staff Road went missing. Hundreds of passengers suffered as train communications were suspended from the time of the detection of incident at about 9:30am.

Railway officials said, 'We came to know of the incident from the control room as the Teesta Express headed for the northern region faced trouble in passing the stretch.'
More than 15 trains had crossed the stretch before the incident could be detected. No untoward incident took place as the railway was still cool in the morning and did not expand. Railway engineers found 3,510 rail clips, weighing about four tonnes, missing from both the lines along the stretch.

The officials said the workers repaired the metre-gauge railway, with the clips taken off the bordering broad-gauge line immediately. Train communications resumed at 11:00am.
The officials said the clips might not have been removed in less than two hours and a half. The incident went unnoticed at a place near the navy headquarters and in front of the new gate of Senakunja. Apart from Railway Police, the army was asked to investigate the matter as the incident took place right across the cantonment area.

The incident caused a shockwave amongst train-travellers. Was it sabotage? The DG of Bangladesh Railway says it could be sabotage. Evidence unearthed by police investigation so far suggests it was an economic crime by an organised gang of thieves.
Sixteen suspects of the crime and recipient, of stolen goods have so far been apprehended by the police, including a security guard of the construction firm Max Automobiles, which was awarded a repair and maintenance contract for the relevant section of the railway. According to Railway officials, a Chinese company called CFICC is engaged in constructing dual gauge tracks for the Bangladesh Railway, so that both broad gauge and metre gauge railway wagons can be run on a single track. They are supposed to complete the construction by June and hand over the additional line of rail installed to Bangladesh Railway.

The theft has affected mostly the metre gauge track under use along the new line of rail that is being laid. As such, the cost of replacement of the clips may have to be borne by the contractors, whose associate is Max Automobiles. Some 600 to 700 workers of Max Automobiles have been engaged to work on the railway track from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. at night when no trains run on that track. Stray incidents of theft of both clips and sleepers have been going on, according to reported confession of some of the culprits nabbed. Theft of over 3510 clips from the two kilometre-long railway stretch presumably took place within that time limit of pre-down hours on 28 March. It took more than 10 persons posing as contractor's men to remove the clips and take them away, presumably in a truck load, since one person could at best remove six of such clips per minute on the average.
The clips did not have any protective devise to obstruct removal or theft. This was because the dual gauge construction work was financed under Indian State Credit. The clips under the credit terms were to be exclusively imported from India, although imported clips with anti-theft devise are available in Bangladesh. Indian manufacturers who supplied the clips do not make clips with anti-theft device. The clips cost Taka 100 weighing about 900 grams each. 411 stolen clips have been recovered. The scrap-dealers who obtained the stolen goods have been identified and speedy action taken for criminal prosecution and damage control. But, to quote a commentator, "much more will have to be done both by the lawmen and the railway in order the restore the sense of security of the rail passengers which has been so rudely jolted."

Theft of iron and steel parts from public installations these days are not peculiar to poverty-ridden countries like ours any more. Like rising food prices and disturbed food grain markets around the world, the phenomenon of pilferage of iron and steel parts to obtain scrap prices comprise a global syndrome.

Daily Herald in Suburaban Chicago, U.S.A., reported Jan. 12, 2008: "On Dec 22, police pulled over a 33-year-old Lake-in-the-Hills Woman after she failed to use a turn signal.....(and) found 11 manhole covers in her car."

The Guardian in England reported in October 2004: "London has joined the select band of world cities cursed by mysterious phenomenon of manhole cover theft....The thieves made off with 93 covers in one week."

International Herald Tribune, March 29-30, 2008 commented, in a post-editorial: "Since 2004, dozens of cities on every continent, including Cardiff, MontrĂ¯¿½al, Milwanku, Daegu, Chandigarh, and Johannesburg, have experienced manhole cover theft. Calcutta's daily Telegraph has estimated that at least 20,000 of the city's manhole covers are stolen every year. The Beijing Times claims that Beijing lost 24000 covers, valued at over $5 million, to theft in 2004 alone, and the China daily reported that on average, 12 are pilfered everyday in Shanghai. (If) you're not normally given to thinking about manhole covers, you still may be asking why a 33-year old woman would be driving around with 11 of them in her car. What motives could she, and all the other manhole-cover thieves around the world, have for making off with cast-iron discs weighing in excess of 50 pounds (22.70 kilograms)? This: In 2001, scrap metal sold for $77 a ton; at the end of 2004, it was $300 per ton, and today it is approaching $480."

[ALOCHONA] Dhaka's 'Conch Street' under threat

Dhaka's 'Conch Street' under threat

By Mark Dummett
BBC News, Dhaka

Amiya Kumar Sur
Mr Sur says the bangle industry is facing death
Amiya Kumar Sur sits under the faded portrait of his grandfather, holding in his hands the unusual source of his family's wealth for generations - a conch shell.
For hundreds of years they have been importing them from Sri Lanka. These gnarled sea shells are then hammered, cut, polished and carved into delicate white bangles.
"Every Hindu woman has to wear two of these at the moment of her marriage," Mr Sur explains proudly. "This is the most ancient handicraft in Bangladesh."
The same work is done by a dozen families along Shakhari Bazaar, a narrow street in Dhaka's old town, which is named after the bangles.
Opposite where Mr Sur sits is his workshop, where most of the cutting is done - in a near-dark atmosphere of dust and dampness.
The only thing that has changed here for centuries is that the shells are now sliced by a machine but everything else, including the carving of intricate patterns on the side of the bangles, is done by hand.
'Facing death'
Mr Sur's family and the community of Shakhari Bazaar has done well out of this business.
Their houses are as old as Dhaka itself - which was founded as a provincial capital 400 years ago.
Old and new buildings in Dhaka

Above the shops is a maze of courtyards, decorated rooms and temples that made up some of the grandest houses in Mughal and colonial-era Dhaka.
But things are now changing and the fate of these buildings and the way of life of the people who live and work in them is uncertain.
Mr Sur explained that while Bangladesh's Hindu population is still large - estimated at about 12 million people - its numbers are dwindling and many now prefer to buy cheaper, synthetic bangles which are made in India.
Unless Muslims can be persuaded to buy the bangles as well, Mr Sur warns, his industry is "facing death".
"The next generation is losing all hope in it," he said.
The cost of maintaining their historic homes is also increasing, and the owners face a huge incentive to sell to developers, who pull them down and build low-cost apartment blocks instead.
A century ago Dhaka was a town of 200,000 people. It is now the home to 15 million and every day that figure increases.
"The population is going up, but our houses are not. Most of them are falling to bits and we can't afford to repair them," Mr Sur said.
Conch shell jewellery
Conch shell jewellery is much sought after
"We want to stay here and keep our traditions alive, but we need help."
They get none from the government, which also fails to enforce restrictions on the size and construction methods of new buildings.
Shakhari Bazaar has survived the Mughal empire, the British Raj, the partition of India and the Pakistani army, which killed many Hindu residents during Bangladesh's independence war in 1971.
But one by one its crumbling mansions are now being replaced by overcrowded tenements and the bazaar is becoming another of the city's slums.
'Uphill struggle'
"In Dhaka, you won't find any other place where the original inhabitants of a neighbourhood are still living," said Taimur Islam, an architect of Dhaka's Urban Studies Group, which wants to rescue Shakhari Bazaar.
"We are not saying there should not be any modern development. But there has to be sustainable conservation," he said.
"The old character of the neighbourhood can be preserved, while there can be modern buildings and the old ones are respected."
Building in old Dhaka
Much of old Dhaka's buildings are in a poor state of repair
Unlike its South Asian neighbours and even bombed-out Afghanistan, Bangladesh has no programme of preserving or restoring its historic urban quarters, so Mr Islam admits that his is an uphill struggle.
But he hopes he can win over the sceptics in the community by showing them that restoring old buildings can make economic sense - well-built apartment blocks can be constructed behind some of the old facades.
The most important houses can be restored.
"Restoring a building is labour intensive and we can create more jobs," he said.
"Look at this community - it is full of craftsmen we can use. So we are also talking about preserving these original crafts, as well as bringing in tourism. This can all help alleviate poverty. It has been successful elsewhere in the world, it can work here too."

The Actual World

Dubai to build The Actual World

Tues 1 Apr, 2008 1:23 AM GMT

Forget Saudi Arabia's mile-high architectural phallus, set to be twice the height of the Deathspire, Dubai has yet again trumped its neighbours:

DUBAI, 1 April (Reuters) - Faced with lukewarm celebrity interest in its The World artificial islands project, Dubai has decided to build The Actual World.

The multi-trillion dollar mega-project, believed to be largest in the known universe, will see a scale replica of the entire Earth rebuilt on the planet Mars.

The Red Planet was recently acquired by Dubai Holdings as part of its property portfolio diversification strategy.

Sheikh Jamal Abu Shagara, CEO of The Actual World, says a deal has already been signed with a Norwegian company to build a 250 million mile irrigation pipe to transfer water from the Arabian Gulf to Mars.

"We are also in talks with several companies to design the landmasses," Sheikh Jamal said.

"We plan to make The Actual World as exact a replica as possible, but Illegal Zionist Occupying Nations will be removed since they are blocked due to being inconsistent with the religious, cultural, policital and moral values of the United Arab Emirates," he said.

In an interesting twist The Actual World will be built with the climate of the Miocene era, when the United Arab Emirates was covered with rich jungle and mammoths, tigers and various dinosaurs roamed freely around.

The decision to backdate the climate is good news for the animals at Dubai Zoo.

After decades of overcrowding, the elderly lions and bears will be able to roam free in the hunting grounds and private menageries of luxury villas in The Actual World.

The announcement of the project has already excited interest in the subcontinent, where prospective labourers are putting up their wives and children as collateral against middlemen-loans for the $250,000 space flight and visa fees.

"This is considerable money compared to the $10,000 we pay to work in Sonapur," Bangladeshi labourer Shamsul told reporters.

"But on The Actual World we will be able to earn Dh500 a month minus food, accommodation, visa fees, fines, medical treatment and travel expenses, compared to the Dh400 we earn now."

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: newsweek cover story: When Barry Became Barack

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47435

Quote: In one instance, he politely confronted his professor over
lunch at a local sandwich shop called The Cooler. "He'd gotten a
grade he was disappointed in," Boesche recalls. "I told him he was
really smart, but he wasn't working hard enough." Other students
might have backed off at that point. But not Obama. He politely told
Boesche he should have gotten a better grade. Even today, Obama
recalls the demeaning mark. He told journalist David Mendell, author
of a recent book called "Obama, From Promise to Power," that he "was
pissed" about it because he thought he was being graded "on a
different curve." Boesche still insists he gave him the grade he
deserved. Unquote

This story, if true, tells us very much about Barack Obama.

[mukto-mona] Pakistan: Two Lovers Stoned To Death

Pakistan: Two Lovers Stoned To Death
by voiceforpeace | April 2, 2008 at 12:46 am | 355 views | 7 comments
The cruel Taliban militants or terrorists, who have been ruling the tribal areas nowadays, have stoned two lovers to death in the presence of large number of people. The incident took place in Mohmand Agency, tribal areas situated on Pak-Afghan border adjoining to Bajaur Agency. The incident has saddened the whole tribal areas. According to them, the government of Pakistan has been claiming that tribal areas are the part of this country, but still such type of incidents have taking place without any hindrance.
Reports said that a man and a woman were stoned to death by militants in Khwezai-Baezai area on Monday after a 'qazi court' found them guilty of adultery.
This is the first incident of Rajam (stoning to death) carried out in Fata. Earlier, couples found guilty of adultery by militants or tribesmen were executed by firing squads.
The woman, identified as Shano from Mohmand Agency, had allegedly eloped with Daulat Khan Malikdeenkhel of Bara on March 15.
Dr Asad, a spokesman for the militants, told Dawn that Shano was a married woman living in Peshawar's Deen Bahar colony.
He said a complaint had been received from her family that she had been abducted by Daulat Khan. But later it was reported that she had eloped with him.
He said that some members of the Taliban movement captured them in Nowshera when they were returning from Karachi.
He said the qazi found the couple guilty of adultery and sentenced them to death by stoning and the sentence was carried out in Khwaezai-Baezai, about 40 kms west of the Mohmand Agency's headquarters Ghalanai.
The body of the woman was laid to rest in the same area by some local people. The man's body was taken to the hospital and handed over to his relatives.
