[mukto-mona] Re:Taslima-SG - to Dr M Younus Sheikh

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47655

Dr. M Younus,

Why did you write about that islamic past?

Taslima-thoughts are refreshing contemporary human songs of love and
freedom where a vulnerable bengali girl and a buddhist monnk explode
in laughter. Here, islam just roams around like a dinosaur, a misfit
from the past.

Then what was your point?

[mukto-mona] Fwd: Asiapeace (ACHA) Hindu Worker killed for "blasphemy"

Contrary to universally accepted maxim of equality ' Don't do unto others what you do not want to be done to unto you'', unfortunately and sadly, Muslims in general believe that they have a right to be the exceptions to this fundamental principle of basic human equality and fairness. In such matters, their 'chosen people syndrome' about themselves is not only hypocritical and one-eyed, but shameless, immoral and indefensible.

Subj: Asiapeace (ACHA) Hindu Worker killed for "blasphemy"

Unfortunately, the idea that blasphemy (however defined) is worthy of the death penalty has very wide support in Muslim culture. On this issue, Muslims are "moderate" only if they are in a very small minority (as in the US). Sad.

Omar Ali

Workers kill Hindu colleague for 'blasphemy'
KARACHI: Dozens of Muslim workers at a factory in Karachi beat to death a Hindu colleague on Tuesday for alleged blasphemy, officials said.

Jagdish Kumar, 25, was tortured and killed at the garments factory after a debate on religion became heated, police and hospital officials said.

"About 1,500 workers at the factory in the Korangi industrial area beat to death the Hindu worker over [allegations of] blasphemy," police superintendent Farrukh Bashir said. The mob was trying to burn the body when officers arrived and took it away, Bashir added. Police had made several arrests, he said, without giving numbers. staff report/agencies

[mukto-mona] Middle East Recruiting - Saudi minister wants workers with knowledge of Saudi culture

Dear Friends

I hate to be a smart aleck but "knowledge of Saudi Culture"!!!!

What is that? Camel riding, multiple marriages, overt religiosity and covert debauchery............

Most Bangladeshi workers in the Holy Land are unskilled, where should they go to get a primer on hypocrisy. Could be a business oppurtunity for Jamaati types in our midstf or opening Saudi Culture enculcation Schools.

Robin Khundkar

Saudi Deputy Minister for Labour Ahmed Abdulraham Al Mansour Tuesday urged Bangladesh authorities to send workers with adequate knowledge about Saudi culture, lack of which, he said, often embarrasses both the sides.

He also called for sending skilled workers in keeping with the changed labour market that prefers skilled hands, holding out offer of assistance for skill building.

"We can assist Bangladesh in developing skilled manpower, if necessary," he told reporters after the Saudi-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting in Dhaka.

Ahmed led the Saudi delegation while ERD Secretary Aminul Islam Bhuiyan headed the host team at the two-day 9th JEC meeting that concluded yesterday.

"Lack of knowledge about the rules and regulation creates problem," the Saudi minister said, adding that workers should also have proper appointment letters.

He noted that the Saudi labour market has changed a lot and authorities now prefer skilled workers.

Replying to a question, he said he would not bring sweeping charges against all the recruiting agencies that recruit workers to Saudi Arabia for cheating workers.

He, however, opted for ensuring transparency of the local recruiting agencies.

The ERD Secretary Aminul Islam Bhuiyan said the JEC had a fruitful meeting on bilateral issues, including manpower export, trade and commerce, economic cooperation, and tourism, labour issues dominating the talk.

[ALOCHONA] Hardcore poltical party people, leaders and CTG share the blame for the worst economy in Bangladesh

Dear All,

I have been watching the current economical situation in Bangladesh as well as talking to the people on the ground in Bangladesh.  I am convinced now that there is a silent Famine/Hunger going on in Bangladesh and I am not sure what can be done unless all political parties, CTG and Businessmen come together to face this unwanted situation in Bangladesh.

I actually blame all hardcore political party people and leaders as well as CTG for the price hike of the essential items in Bangladesh besides the international price hike in the market.  Lets me explain why I blame hardcore political party people and leaders in Bangladesh for this unwanted situation in Bangladesh.

Political Parties share the blame for price hike:

I have asked all the political parties to give CTG until December 2008 to complete all the essential works that are required for the development and create an atmosphere for holding a legitimate MP election in Bangladesh.  But who does listen to this call?  There are many hardcore political party people in Bangladesh and Abroad have started to pull CTG legs from the day 1, and destroyed Bangladesh image to the world especially in near UN or embassies around the world to put Bangladesh a violent, undemocratic country which have helped to stop foreign investment in Bangladesh.

I am also convinced that there are few hardcore political party people who are working hard to sale the country to bring their leaders out from Jails.  They forget about 150 million people who are affected for their power lust in Bangladesh.  Now general people are paying the price for the infighting among ourselves for the next power of a bottomless country like Bangladesh.

I also understand that few of them where victim of anti corruption drive where they can not enjoy the free wealth they have acquired for the last 37 years.

CTG also shares the blame for price hike:

I also blame CTG for their lack of vision about food security after two floods and SIDR.  CTG made the situation worst after blanket anti-corruption drive without creating reconciliation initiatives "General Amnesty 2007" in Jun 2007 which has created lack of enthusiasm among people to help CTG in the economy.

CTG never should put Hasina and Khalida into the Jails but they should be put in house arrest during the trial against their corruption trials.  Their arrest took too much time from CTG where they could focus on other important issues that Bangladesh is facing.  This also fuel other hardcore political people to make noise in Bangladesh and abroad and hamper Bangladesh image to the world.

CTG's few arrogant advisers made the whole situation worst for Bangladesh for their attitude about my way or highway.

CTG could keep going the anti-corruption drive to every level in Bangladesh without making too much noise on the horizon and they should take the advice which I have given in may areas.

However,  I see that Bangladesh can face the unwanted economy in future with only unity Government and has to be acceptable to the outside world.  I will not waste too much time on CTG unless they understand my arguments.  I think this is a life and death situation for 150 million people for the worst economy condition in Bangladesh.  Self pride has to put aside and all have to work for Bangladesh regardless your party affiliation.

Good Bless Bangladesh!

Regards,
M. M. Chowdhury (Mithu)

[mukto-mona] Fwd. Erotic Jesus sparks art debate in Austria By Sylvia Westall [REUTERS]

Erotic Jesus sparks art debate in Austria

By Sylvia Westall Mon Apr 7, 3:21 AM ET

VIENNA (Reuters) - They knew it would be risky to exhibit a homoerotic version of Christ's Last Supper, but curators at museum of Vienna's Roman Catholic Cathedral weren't ready for a barrage of angry messages and calls to be shut down.

The source of the dispute, which Austrian media has dubbed Vienna's version of the Mohammad caricature row, is a retrospective honoring Austria's cherished artist Alfred Hrdlicka, who turned 80 earlier this year.

But not everyone has been wishing Hrdlicka a Happy Birthday. And the Cathedral Museum's director and Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna, have both come under fire from some museum visitors and Catholic websites.

The Church hastily removed the main picture, "a homosexual orgy" of the Apostles as Hrdlicka describes it.

But the protest has continued, much to the surprise of the small Cathedral Museum which is nestled down a narrow street in Vienna's historic Gothic quarter.

The museum's director defends both Hrdlicka's work and his decision to host the artist's controversial versions of biblical imagery in a museum tied to the Catholic Church.

"We think Hrdlicka is entitled to represent people in this carnal, drastic way," Bernhard Boehler said in his small museum office, across the street from Vienna's imposing St. Stephan's Cathedral.

He said the museum never intended to offend people but that art should be allowed to provoke a debate.

"I don't see any blasphemy here," he said, gesturing at a Crucifixion picture showing a soldier simultaneously beating Jesus and holding his genitals. "People can imagine what they want to."

Boehler says that picture drew particular criticism from some visitors, along with a sculpture of Jesus on the cross without a face or loincloth that some Christians found offensive.

But the most disputed work was 'Leonardo's Last Supper, restored by Pier Paolo Pasolini' which showed cavorting Apostles sprawling over the dining table and masturbating each other.

Hrdlicka says he represented the men in this way because there are no women in the Da Vinci painting which inspired it. Pasolini was a controversial Italian filmmaker and writer who was murdered in the 1970s.

The exhibition has attracted fierce criticism on religion blogs in Austria, Germany and even in the United States, with bloggers denouncing it with terms such as "blasphemy" and "desecration."

"The exhibition should never have taken place. The Director should apologize to Catholics worldwide for this," an article on conservative Catholic website kreuz.net said.

In the United States, conservative columnist Rod Dreher wrote on his widely read religion blog "I wouldn't have guessed that, given his reputation, a man like (Cardinal) Schoenborn would have stood for this abomination for half a second."

The museum took down the Last Supper piece at Cardinal Schoenborn's request just over a week after the 'Religion, Flesh and Power' exhibition opened, leaving a blank black wall at the entrance to the display.

"This has nothing to do with censorship, rather corresponds with the understood "reverence for the sacred," the Cardinal's spokesman said in a statement.

"It is also an act of respect towards those believers who feel this portrayal offended and provoked them in their deepest religious sensitivity."

The diocese says the museum's decision to show Hrdlicka's work does not mean it identifies with everything it portrays.

Hrdlicka agrees but points out that the Last Supper piece was not intended as a swipe at the Catholic Church.

"There was such a reaction to its physicality. For me it was quite surprising the museum wanted to show the piece in the first place," he told Reuters by telephone.

"If the Cathedral Museum is having problems now, it's not really my affair, it's for the Cathedral Museum to deal with." He said overall he was pleased with the display and praised the director for being "strong."

A communist and atheist, Hrdlicka has said the Bible is the most thrilling book he has ever read and that religious imagery forms a central core to his work.

Boehler says the angry emails he has received remind him of how some reacted to Mel Gibson's 2004 film "The Passion of The Christ." In his opinion, critics of the film's violence and physicality also missed the point.

"The Crucifixion was brutal and it would be a lie to say everything in our world is nice," he said, pointing out that Hrdlicka is an anti-war activist who has seen the effects of Nazism and violence first hand.

"We in Europe have been affected by this and it influences how we see (Hrdlicka's) work."

Boehler, like Hrdlicka, says the art debate can be compared to the Danish cartoon row, where an image of the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb in his turban enraged some in the Muslim world who saw it as blasphemous.

The angry reaction to Hrdlicka's work has only been verbal and the museum says some Christians have been balanced and support the exhibition, despite disagreeing with the artist's approach.

Curator Martina Judt said the exhibition was meant to prompt this kind of balanced reaction. The museum wanted to show that controversial works inspired by religious imagery can be discussed without taboo.

"People have said the Catholic Church has become a lot more liberal," she said. "But in the end, the reactions show this perhaps isn't the case."

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: newsweek cover story: When Barry Became Barack

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47611

I can't find much with which to disagree in your post.

Personally, I have been looking closely at the evolution of ideas and
as, a consequence, the "supposed" evolution of "good". It used to be
my belief that the world and its people are better off today in terms
of compassion than it has ever been in history. If one looks closely
though, one might come to a different conclusion.

There have always been people who rebelled against the status quo.
There have always been people who waged wars to maintain the status
quo. How much has changed? I guess we will never know.

Presently, we are engaged in a war of words and demonstrations
against China in favor of Tibet. So much so that the Olympics are the
focus of violent demonstrations. Are the followers asking serious
questions about what they are following? Or, is the attention of
Richard Gere and Mia Farrow enough to negate any questions?

No country is all good or all bad.

http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html#notes

What is troubling is how little research we undertake to examine the
other's cause and, more important, how closed our eyes/hearts are
when we see something with which we do not agree.

Thank you for your response. It got me thinking again... *smiles*
and that's bad!

AudreyM.

[mukto-mona] Re:Allot a space for one Private University in each Special Economic Zo

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47633

There is something wrong with this.

I think it is more important to have communication between industry professions and universities it is the private sectors interest to have worker to what they are required to do...

So sommunication is far more important then placing a universoty at every industrial EPZ which does not make it a suitable place any way.

But communication is the most important thing... So we should get the private sector professions to sign a memorandom and agreements with the education sector...

[mukto-mona] Re:Taslima-SG

Prophet Muhammad and his Islamic Tribe's Mass-murders; a page from history

………"During the Arab invasion of Sindh, India (712 CE), Muhammad bin Qasim first attacked Debal; It was garrisoned by 4,000 Kshatriya soldiers and served by 3,000 Brahmans. All males of the age of 17 and upwards were put to the sword/slaughtered and their women and children were enslaved. "[Seven hundred] beautiful females, who were under the protection of Budh (that is, had taken shelter in the Budhist temple), were all captured with their valuable ornaments, and clothes adorned with jewels."……………

****************
Today's religious map of the Middle East traces to the unification of the Arabian tribes under the banner of Islam in the 7th century, and their subsequent conquest of much of the known world. Muhammad's was clever enough  in finding a way to unite the myriad of fissiparous, feuding Bedouin tribes of northern Arabia into a cohesive polity. Just as he had provided a custom of rules under which the people of Medina could live together, so he enlarged that tradition for all Arabs, but this one had the imprimatur not just of Muhammad, but of an Allah, submission to whom called -- Islam -- spelled out in the Koran, bound Arabian tribesmen into the community of bedouin believers, the umma.

Building on the tribal system of "balanced opposition," Muhammad was able to frame an inclusive structure within which the tribes had a common, Allah-given identity as Muslims. But unification was only possible by creating a tribalized enemy against which Muslims could make common cause. This Muhammad did by opposing Muslims against infidels; and the dar al-Islam, the land of Islam and peace, against the dar al-harb, the land of infidels and conflict. Through the precepts of Islam, traditional Bedouin raiding was sanctified as an act of Islamic religious duty.

With every successful battle against local unbelievers, especially after the critical early battle against the Meccans, more Bedouin joined the umma. Once united, the Bedouin warriors of the umma turned outward, destroying the world on the of jihad, holy war. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Arabs, in lightning thrusts, challenged and beat the Byzantines to the north and the Persians to the east, both weakened by their continuous wars with one another, thus imposing their control over the Christian majority in the Levant and the Zoroastrian majority in Persia, and therefore over the entire Middle East. These stunning successes were rapidly followed by conquests of Christian and Jewish populations in Egypt, Libya and North Africa's Maghreb (Arabic for "the West"), and, in the east, central Asia and the Hindu population of northern India. Not content with these triumphs, Arab armies invaded and subdued much of Christian Spain and Portugal, and all of Sicily. Since the Roman Empire, the world had not seen such power and reach. All fell before the Saracen blades.

Most accounts of Islamic history, even that of the Lindholm's esteemed «
The Islamic Middle East », glide over these conquests, as if they were friendly takeovers. But the truth was very different.

The evidence is overwhelming that vast numbers of infidel male warriors and civilians were slain, and that most of those spared, particularly the women and children, were enslaved for domestic and sexual servitude. While men who willingly converted were spared, their wives and children were taken as slaves. In conquered regions, children were regularly taken from parents, while on the borders -- especially in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Africa south of the Sahara -- raiding for slaves was normal practice. Of the male slaves, a substantial number were made eunuchs by the removal of sex organs, in order to serve in harems. This account of the Arab campaign in northern India illustrates the usual procedures:

"During the Arab invasion of Sindh (712 CE), Muhammad bin Qasim first attacked Debal; It was garrisoned by 4,000 Kshatriya soldiers and served by 3,000 Brahmans. All males of the age of 17 and upwards were put to the sword and their women and children were enslaved. "[Seven hundred] beautiful females, who were under the protection of Budh (that is, had taken shelter in the temple), were all captured with their valuable ornaments, and clothes adorned with jewels." Muhammad dispatched one-fifth of the legal spoil to Hajjaj, which included 75 damsels, the other four-fifths were distributed among soldiers."

The multitude of reports from Muslim, indigenous and other sources of the Islamic conquests are equally detailed and equally daunting to a modern reader. It is true that throughout history intergroup relations in most of the world were exploitative and repressive, and not infrequently brutal and bloodthirsty. The world of Islam was not so much an exception to this, as exemplary of it.

The theological foundation of the Arab Empire was the supremacy of the Arab Islam and the obligation of each Muslim to advance its domination. The notion of Jihad, in particular, served to establish the Muslim community's permanent state of war against the dar al-harb until the infidels' conclusive submission and the absolute world supremacy of Islam.

Yet even as Islamic armies were coming to dominate the known world, fissures emerged within Islam, which would give rise to the bloody internecine battles that continue to this day in Iraq and elsewhere.

Most notably, the relentless oppositions within tribal life have been reflected on a large scale in the battles between Sunni vs. Shiite, a battle originating in a squabble between closely related kin groups over the leadership of the Islamic empire following Muhammad's death. Their divergent philosophical orientations are based on two tribal principles: Sunnism recognizes leaders based on an enforced consent; Shiism recognizes leaders based on descent. The continued anatagonism between the two groups constitutes one of the many ways in which the tribal spirit continues its dominance in the Middle East.

[ALOCHONA] Army won't follow the path to takeover: Moeen

Army won't follow the path to takeover: Moeen

Two days after his term as army chief was extended by another year, General Moeen U Ahmed Tuesday asserted that the army would not follow the examples of military takeover in neighbouring countries. Full Story. Updates with details on potatoes, NSC and editors

The army chief made his stand clear once again as he sat over lunch with the country's leading editors at the army headquarters to give an account of his and the army's role in national life.

On the army's role in running the affairs of the state, he said: "We are subservient to the government and we shall not take any steps so that (the society) becomes militarised."

Moeen repeatedly denied, responding to suggestions, that the army had any policymaking role in running the country. "We do not attend cabinet meetings. We have not sent our officers to man the desks in government offices," he said on an emphatic note.

One editor said the real power lay with the army chief, which prompted him to assert: "Let me assure you that we are not having power."

"We will neither follow Pakistan or other neighbours, nor our predecessors," Moeen said in reference to military coups in Thailand and Pakistan and previous "takeovers" in Bangladesh.

The general touched upon topics ranging from the upcoming polls to failed attempts to rein in prices.

Moeen blamed "the hoarding tendency of importers, buyers and sellers", as well as last year's floods, Cyclone Sidr and the global economy for spiralling prices.

He spoke of the role of the armed forces in tackling the food crisis, saying they had helped farm an extra 342,993 acres yielding an extra 22 lakh tonnes of rice for the upcoming boro harvest.

The army chief stressed the need for the nation to consume potatoes alongside rice to alleviate the food crisis.

" Bhater pashe aloo protidin (potatoes alongside rice every day)" is the slogan the army chief has been spreading throughout the army.

Also at lunch with the editors, the menu was dominated by seven items of potato.

Answering a query on speculation over the polls uncertainty, Moeen said: "Please wait until December 31. Why won't there be elections by December 31?"

"This is the cut-off time and we must not miss the date," he said.

The government and the Election Commission pledged the national polls by the year-end, but many political leaders doubted it.

The army chief dispelled the doubt and said: "The roadmap is there and I don't see any deviation (from it)." But he pointed to some "minor problems", which are seemingly slowing the process.

Moeen referred to the EC, political parties, the government and people as the key players of elections.

Referring to a 1996 circular, Moeen touched upon a 23-member Security Council, designed to ensure national security and accountability of the government.

The NSC, never made effective, was led by the then prime minister to make decisions on defence affairs.

A circular issued at the time by the Cabinet Division said the council had also been given responsibilities to deal with all internal problems tied to security.

The NSC had also been empowered to take decisions or direct the authorities concerned to take actions and make recommendations to the cabinet, if necessary.

Moeen spoke on his recent visit to India in reply to a query by one of the editors and said: "I have invitations (from China and Pakistan) too."

But he said he could not spend so much time visiting abroad.

Moeen also answered questions about the extension of his term as army chief and insisted that it was the "government" that made the decision.

The journalists who attended the lunch meeting include Daily Independent editor Mahbubul Alam, Ittefaq editor Rahat Khan, Amar Desh's acting editor Ataus Samad, Samakal editor Abed Khan, Prothom Alo editor Motiur Rahman, New Nation editor Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Bangladesh Observer editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Financial Express editor Moazzem Hossain, News Today editor Reazuddin Ahmed, UNB chief editor Enayetullah Khan, Manav Jamin editor Motiur Rahman Chowdhury, BTV director general Kamal Uddin, head of news of Channel i Shaikh Siraj, editor-in-chief of bdnews24.com Toufique Imrose Khalidi, New Age editor Nurul Kabir, Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamol Dutt, Naya Diganta editor Alamgir Mohiuddin, ATN Bangla adviser Saiful Bari and its chief of news Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and Channel 1 head of news Nazmul Ashraf.

General Moeen was flanked by Major General Sina Ibn Jamali, chief of the general staff, and Major General Golam Mohammad, head of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, when he spoke to the editors.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Re: Middle East Labour: Recruiting agents blamed

Dear Readers/Writers:

Tell me if you agree:

a. Bangladesh and West Bengal will become one political entity by the turn to the century; West Bengal will separate from India;

b. Calcutta University delegates campaigned against the founding of Dhak University;

c. there is no reason to fear and be skeptic about the recent love affair between the cultural arenas of the two countries as that will open up the horizon of artistes from two Bengals to become busier in their fields;

d. being religious does not mean being fanatics;

e. communism and socialism are reaching for the throats of Bangladeshis and General Moeen is aware of that 0 look at Nepal, West bengal and Myanmar;

f. religious fanaticism is created by a foreign Power base and Communism by the other to fight each-other;

g. foreign education system especially GCSC curriculum is a safe way to avoid the national pressure to upgrade our low standard academic systems and this foreign system are creating foreign loving and minded young generation who are hardly taught any national issues or even the Bengali language;

h. we need to keep open minded cooperation with India as well as with Pakistan as strategically Pakistan is also important to us;

i. all the NGOs (especially foreign) are engaged in preaching Chirstianity in exchange of money and almost none of these NGOs are engaged in true infrastructural development of the country and our poeple are misled as many re devoid of knowledge and many NGOs are engaged in child trafficing over the borders.
