Dear Alochoks,

 

Rice crisis was created by the group of businessman and they made money successfully in the name of international market crisis. We produce more than 95% rice for ourself. Why the international market should affect us that way? The 5% can be affected and price can be increase maximum 10% for this affect. But here it is increased as much as 80%-100%. Who fix this price? Who control them?

 

I have read in the yesterday newspaper that the 'news' of Boro rice bring the price down by Taka 40-60 per mound in just 1 day. Surprised? Just a 'news' can reduce the price in 24 hours!!! Strange country.

 

A group of people of our country engaged killing other group of people by increasing the price. They are certain group of stockist. The biggest failure of this government is failure to control them or punish them. Instead govt also start talk about the crisis of "international market". Media added fuel by highlighting the crisis in the international market. But nobody clarify the point that the crisis of international market cant affect us in that HIGH if our businessman is fair.

 

How much a farmer earn from the rice we buy for Tk40/kg? Not more than Tk19/kg. Then who is getting the balance Tk21? Govt need to investigate it if they are really sincere on this issue.

 

I already saw smiles in some politicians for the current crisis. Thats a point to the ponder.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N and a retired ISI chief have expressed concern over the appointment of Maj-Gen Jay W. Hood -- who supervised the brutal torture at Abu-Gharaib and Guantanamo Bay -- as US chief officer of Defence Representative to Pakistan.

Although the Foreign Office has said that Pakistan had not received any formal intimation in this regard, continued silence by the US embassy is making the whole matter alarming.

Former ISI chief Gen (r) Hamid Gul said the government should resist any such attempt with all available resources. Hamid said this was a matter of honour of Holy Quran and Holy Prophet (PBUH), which could not be ignored by any Muslim. "We will press the government not to accept his appointment here, otherwise we will launch a big movement against Gen Hood's appointment." Hamid added.

Hamid said: "If Gen Hood arrives in Pakistan, he will not manage to stay here for long since there are many 'Ghazi Ilam Din Shaeeds who are ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Holy Prophet and Holy Quran".

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) Sidique Al-Farooq said that a conspiracy was being hatched to create a law and order situation across the country by provoking Muslims' sentiment.

TORONTO - The Muslim Canadian Congress has expressed shock and disappointment at the move by Islamic countries to bulldoze the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) into approving a resolution curtailing freedom of speech under the guise of protecting religion.

The resolution approved at the UNHRC and initiated by the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) is disingenuously titled "Combating Defamation of Religion." However, the fact is that the OIC resolution is nothing more than a cover to silence opponents of Islamist oppression inside Muslim countries, as well as in the West.

The MCC in a statement said "the UNHRC resolution instead of protecting the right to freedom of conscience and religious expression, will become a tool in the hands of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the world jihadi movement to strike fear among the opponents of Islamic extremism." The move is a retrogressive step greatly undermining the rights of individuals who believe in questioning, evaluating and challenging religious dogma. Many Islamic countries have no qualms in executing their Muslim citizens on trumped up charges of apostasy and using it to instill fear in the hearts and minds of Muslims who reject the tyranny of man-made Sharia law of the 12th century, and it being applied in the 21st.

The MCC statement said the UNHRC's decision has little to do with protecting the rights of such individuals who are already vulnerable to threats by radicals and extremists. Very often these take the shape of death threats over perceived heresies and blasphemies against orthodox belief. It will merely strengthen the hands of fanatics who do not believe in tolerating dissent within religious discourse.

The MCC strongly protests the UNHRC interference in matters related to freedom of expression and conscience as guaranteed by liberal democracies. In this regard, the MCC has welcomed the British government's recent decision to repeal the age-old blasphemy laws that undermine freedom of expression.

As a pre-emptive step, the MCC is asking the Canadian government to follow the example of Britain in repealing blasphemy laws. The Canadian law states:

"At common law, blasphemy and blasphemous libel consisted of the publication of contemptuous, reviling, scurrilous or ludicrous matter relating to God, Jesus Christ, the Bible, or the formularies of the Church of England. It was not blasphemy at common law to attack any religion except Christianity, and an attack on the Christian religion had to be such as tended to lead to a breach of the peace. While it is blasphemy to publish attacks upon God, it may no longer be blasphemous to publish attacks upon the doctrines of Christianity or upon Christian clergy. The publisher must intend to publish, but need not intend that the publication amount to blasphemy. The blasphemous words may be spoken or written."

Such restrictions on freedom of religion are no longer justified in pluralistic societies guaranteeing freedom of belief and conscience , including the right to question religious doctrine, monotheistic or otherwise. It is about time, the Canadian government established parity in such matters by declaring blasphemy laws obsolete.

The MCC is urging Muslim organizations in Canada and the Western world to reject this attack on freedom of expression by the Islamic countries led by the oppressive dictatorships of Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The MCC statement further said that the recent push at the UNHRC by Islamic countries is part of the campaign against the 1948 UN Declaration of Universal Human Rights. Saudi Arabia and Iran have long championed their own "Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam (CDHRI)" which affirms Islamic Shariah as its sole source, while rejecting Universal Human Rights.

The MCC unequivocally rejects man-made medieval sharia law as an alternative to the 1948 Declaration of Universal Human Rights. Laws that justify slavery, polygamy, the second-class status of women and that sanction the death penalty for apostates and gays, should best be reserved as part of our history, not our future. Until capital punishment is abolished in all Islamic countries alongwith theocratic dictatorships and monarchies, the OIC has no moral authority lecturing the international community about the need for "Combating Defamation of Religion." These regimes must recognize that their very existence and use of Islam as a political tool is a defamation of religion.

The MCC statement called on North American Muslim organizations and the Mosque establishment to reject and condemn this hypocritical call by the Islamic Countries. It said, "Unless Islamic organizations like CAIR, ISNA and their affiliates on campuses distance themselves from the Muslim Brotherhood agenda against democracy and free speech, their supposed struggle for the civil rights of Muslims in North America will be seen at best as hypocritical and as serving the interests of the worldwide Islamist movement against free speech, enlightenment, and democracy.

Army chief cannot wash his hands of govt's failure

The army chief, General Moeen U Ahmed, once again reassured the nation, at a meeting with top editors of the national media on Tuesday, that the armed forces will not follow the route of military takeover, as seen in neighbouring countries. This is indeed a significant point of reassurance because history has shown time and again that military interventions in politics and governance have hardly ever advanced a nation towards prosperity and democracy. We are, however, compelled to refer to a point of concern that has emerged from the army chief's statements. As reported in New Age on Wednesday, Moeen again claimed that the army has had no role in determining the policies that the extra-constitutional interim government has pursued during the past 15 months. However, besides the fact that the army propelled the current government to power, we have also witnessed on numerous occasions that Moeen made public statements and speeches where he offered policy solutions to national problems, only for it to emerge that these were exactly the solutions that the incumbents had decided to pursue. In a sense then, his policy proposals have presaged official announcements by the government to a similar effect. In view of this, we feel that Moeen has a direct influence on the policy positions that this government takes and the policies that
it pursues.
   We want to also draw attention to the fact that this government, in the span of time that it has been in power, has enormous failures to its name. They have brought the national economy to its knees with stagnation in investment, in job growth, and in agriculture. The incumbents are also largely to blame for the soaring inflation rate and the consequent misery of the common people, especially in the food crisis that we are now witnessing. In its failure to adequately implement the annual development programme, the government has also shown its inability to take any initiative to resuscitate the rural economy, even after the waves of floods and a devastating cyclone destroyed infrastructure and livelihoods across large swathes of the country. In claiming that he and, by way of that, the army has no role in the present government's operations, Moeen is attempting to disown these failures. But the failures in governance that we have experienced and suffered at the hands of this government are generally perceived to be the failures of the army as much as the caretaker government – a perception which, if rooted in public mind, would endanger the very fabric of our nation state.
   We, therefore, reiterate that the army chief and the chief of the caretaker government should make all-out efforts to let the people's representatives once again run the country by restoring the political process. Failures of the past elected governments cannot be used as excuses to keep the democratic process suspended, and perpetuate an undemocratic regime. What is, however, important in this regard is that the people at large keep the would-be elected government under constant watch and pressure so that it cannot abuse its powers as its predecessors did in the past.
