[mukto-mona] Tibet :another view

Tibet a tale of mice and men by Premen Addy 12 Apr 08 (http://dailypioneer.com/indexn12.asp?main_variable=EDITS&file_name=edit3%2Etxt&counter_img=3)

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Faced with the lurid spectacle of a Muslim rabble in Kolkata demanding the expulsion from India of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen, he made a chivalrous call in the dead of night at the safe house in which she was quartered and 'persuaded' her to leave the country for more welcoming shores.

He has now issued a brazen warning to the Dalai Lama to stop making statements on Indian soil that were likely to offend Tibet's Han Chinese overlords in Beijing. What do they know of India, who only India know? Is the GDP the only thing that makes an Indian walk tall? Has fear of China reduced Indian freedoms, values and traditions of hospitality, to a pitchblende of shaming casuistry and cowardice, diminishing India and the Indian people?

Hearing Mr Mukherjee few would believe that it is the murderous apparatus of the Han Chinese imperium that has been gunning down unarmed Tibetan monks by the score on the streets of Lhasa and in cities in the adjoining Tibetan-populated provinces of Sichuan, Gangsu and Xinghai. The taking of innocent lives has provoked no response from the Indian Minister whose. Why not empower him to lead a tributary mission to the Forbidden City and kowtow to the rulers of the Middle Kingdom? They might in their generosity even accept India as an autonomous region of the Celestial Empire.

Most Governments, West and East, have little to boast about in their dealings with China, the allure of the Chinese marketplace having anaesthetised their souls. The Anglo-American great and good (mostly Right-wing), reborn Marco Polos all, have gushed in season and out on the economic miracle that is China, the superpower of Napoleonic prophecy. The stable Oriental despotism of inebriated Occidental fantasy is illusion at war with reality.

Three notable Chinese scholars of the Chinese Communist state, now resident in the US, are refreshingly sceptical: Yasheng Huang, Minxin Pei and Gordan Chang have written extensively on China's economy and described and analysed in detail Beijing's "socialism with Chinese characteristics". Some of what they say would fit in well with a rendition of England's 18th century South Sea Bubble and Engels' History of the English Working Class in 1844.

Although Deng Xiaoping arrogantly called China's invasion of Vietnam in early 1979 a replication of the lesson taught to India in 1962, it was Beijing in the end which had more to learn than teach, as Gen Giap wryly remarked. Vietnam had earlier humbled the American superpower. No one is suggesting surely that China's military strength has ever equalled that of the United States.

When Vietnam fought America, the Soviet Union held the ring. When India fought Pakistan, and America and China made threatening noises on Islamabad's behalf, the Soviet presence neutered the threat. The possibility of a widening conflict is deterrent enough. Besides, India itself is not without means to inflict unacceptable damage on any potential aggressor. Sleep well, comrades of the Indian Press.

The timidity of Governments on Tibet has been subsumed by the rage of the streets in world capitals. The mayhem engulfing the relay of the Olympic torch in London reached its denouement in Paris, showing that Tibet is now a charged metaphor that transcends political and linguistic frontiers. Paris 1789 has been joined by Paris 2008: Globalisation has fulfilled its role and bridged the centuries.

The romance of pan-Asianism bred the Indian fairytale of China's reciprocal goodwill and friendship, notwithstanding Chinese nationalism's antecedents in the sterner school of imperial restoration. It was MN Roy who, way back in1922, dismissed India's pan-Asian dream as no more than the ineffectual vapourings of "proud intellectuals with inferiority complexes."

Rabindranath Tagore's prescient lecture, with its sparse title, Nationalism, was appreciated neither in Japan, where it was first delivered in the aftermath of World War I, nor subsequently understood or absorbed by Chinese audiences when the poet visited China. Japanese and Chinese nationalists alike, barring a small minority, saw him as a representative of a broken civilisation.

Yet India's enduring belief in the grand illusion of a new civilisational alignment would brook no denial. The philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in 1943 visited Chunking, China's wartime capital, in the company of India's Agent-General, KPS Menon, where he gave a speech on the Buddha. Menon's despatch, describing this surreal event, was masterly in its presentation, humour and insight.

Radhakrishnan, he said, spoke as if he were addressing his fellow dons at All Souls College in Oxford. At the end of his spellbinding oration, Radhakrishnan asked a Chinese listener what he thought of the concept of 'Dharma', little realising that the man, Chen Li-fu, understood little English and, as a leader of the underworld, had even less interest in the subject. But he was a generous donor to Kuomintang party funds and was a trusted associate of Chiang Kai-shek!

Menon suggested that India would be better served discussing practicalities with China - an exchange of agricultural specialists, for example - instead of indulging in high falutin' exercises that failed to resonate with Chinese leaders.

Hindi-Chini bhai bhai was of this absurdist vintage. Mao Tse-tung appealed to Jawaharlal Nehru for medical help during the Japanese occupation of China. The response was the Kotnis Mission and it brought a warm letter of thanks. Yet, less than a decade later, a Chinese Communist publication, World Culture, described Nehru as "a rebel against the movement for national independence, a blackguard who undermines the progress of the people's liberation movement, a loyal slave of imperialism". Mao took a dim view of India and Indian culture, as he made clear in a conversation with Richard Nixon and Mr Henry Kissinger. He likened India to a cow, the lowest form of animal in Chinese mythology.

However, India possessed no copyright on poor judgement. Consider the New York Times editor, Harrison Salisbury's "Dissenting Introduction" (for the paper's edition) to the Soviet journalist Victor Louis's title The Coming Decline of the Chinese Empire, a spirited defence of whose sanctity was a triumph of realpolitik over good sense.

To Sardar Vallabhbhai belongs the last word. He got it right with his warning that, with China's occupation of Tibet, India would have two frontiers to protect instead of one against Pakistan.

Re: [mukto-mona] Aparthib's quantum analogy and racial discrimination.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47698

Schrodinger's quantum mechanical cat is both dead and alive. Because of quantum theory's indeterminacy factor It cannot be "either dead or alive." Obviously, also it cannot be "neither". "Both alive and dead" state is intriguing indeed. It is said that "the cat" troubled even Schrodinger probably as much as Newton's Third Law of Motion troubled Newton himself. Theory of probability is a savior in this case. For example, we do not know definitely the location of an electron, a quantum particle, revolving around the nucleus; we can only assign a probability. Uncertainty is inherent in quantum theory. If we can write (as a matter of fact we can) the wave equation for the "unfortunate cat" imaginatively put by the 'mad' scientist into life risk, we can only say, for example, that odds that Schrodinger's cat is alive are 3 to 4 i.e., 75%. This should make sense when the world is uncertain and observation itself affects measurements. Even in the macro world, for example, in
research in the area of behavioral science, methods of observation affect measurements.

The bottom line is that when we talk about Obama or any other candidate, we have to use "probably" many times because the media has put us into an uncertain world because they are there to manufacture our consent.

[mukto-mona] Food and Fuel.An omnious combination.

Many people may not be aware of the impending danger but it's already here. For billions of people around the world life has become unbearable due to the high price of staple food. In many poor nations people are spending 60-70 pc of their net income in buying food. Hunger driving people to the extremes. Law order situation is fast deteriorating and mass protests and riots are taking place. Why suddenly food has become such an explosive issue?  The hidden culprit is fuel. To make the wheels of our cars and industries running we need an eternal flow of fuel and this precious liquid is not found every where but it's needed every where. The fertile human brain is not sitting idle to counter this problem. But there is not much we can do about it. We can't transform anything into fuel; we need very specific things to transform them into fuel. We have started using our food grains to supplement the dearth of fuel. The rich nations are making bio fuel to lessen their dependency on natural petroleum. The other concern is to save the environment by using bio fuel.

A recent statistics shows that since April 2006, eight million hectares of corn, wheat, Soya and other crops that once animal feed and food have been diverted from food production in the United States. In 2008, 18% of U.S. grain production will go to biofuels. Brazil- the world's largest ethanol producer, Argentina, Canada and Eastern Europe are diverting large amounts sugar cane, palm oil, and soybean crops to biofuels.

Europe has mandated a 5.75% use of biofuels by 2010.If achieved; this could require 20% of Europe's cropland to be diverted from food to fuel production. If Australia were to replace 10% of its unleaded gasoline with ethanol, and if were to come from fermentation of wheat, it could require about 40% of the country's annual average wheat crop. This is a very grim picture and there is none to make a compromise. The global population is rising at an alarming level and on the other hand production of food grains is shrinking. All these signs say that a catastrophe is not very far.

Akbar Hussain

[ALOCHONA] Most Dangerous people and gang in Bangladesh

[mukto-mona] Life & Death -Jalal-uddin Rumi

Life & Death

~ Rumi

my beloved grows
right out of my own heart
how much more union can there be

come on sweetheart
let's adore one another
before there is no more
of you and me

a mirror tells the truth
look at your grim face
brighten up and cast away
your bitter smile

a generous friend
gives life for a friend
let's rise above this
animalistic behavior
and be kind to one another

spite darkens friendships
why not cast away
malice from our heart

once you think of me
dead and gone
you will make up with me
you will miss me
you may even adore me

why be a worshiper of the dead
think of me as a goner
come and make up now

since you will come
and throw kisses
at my tombstone later
why not give them to me now
this is me
that same person

i may talk too much
but my heart is silence
what else can i do
i am condemned to live this life

you have set up
a colorful table
calling it life and
asked me to your feast
but punish me if
i enjoy myself

what tyranny is this

be happy with your beloved
you can't find any better
the world will shimmer
because of the diamond you hold

when your heart is immersed
in this blissful love
you can easily endure
any bitter face around

in the absence of malice
there is nothing but
happiness and good times
don't dwell in sorrow my friend

Remember me.

At the twilight, a moon appeared in the sky;
Then it landed on earth to look at me.
Like a hawk stealing a bird at the time of prey;
That moon stole me and rushed back into the sky.
I looked at myself, I did not see me anymore;
For in that moon, my body turned as fine as soul.
The nine spheres disappeared in that moon;
The ship of my existence drowned in that sea.

[mukto-mona] Baitul-Mukarar-Ram Mosque: a place for prayer or inciting violence?

Dear MM Members:

Baitul-Mukarar-Ram Mosque: a place for prayer or inciting violence?

The Baitul-Mukarar-Ram incident tells me that this mosque is being operated by the terrorists,
officials of this mosque are using an important day of prayer (Friday, Jumma prayer) to gather a lot of people,
and then unleash them to create violent circumstance various issues, such as, the cartoon issue, land distribution issue, etc.

can we call this mosque a peaceful prayer place anymore?  if this mosque keeps working against humanity, then it must be shut down.

A full General is worth Rs 500 million+

Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa is a scholar of Pakistan's military and security affairs and a regular contributor to several Pakistani and internationally renowned opinion journals. Currently she  is a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC where she is busy writing her latest book "Military Inc, The Politics of Military's Economy in Pakistan". In it, she analyzes Pakistan military's vast commercial interests and its economic predation since 1953.

Ayesha Siddiqa also writes on Pakistan's military affairs for Jane's Information Group. She was asked to work as the Director of Naval Research with the Navy making her the first civilian and woman to work at that position in the Pakistan defense establishment. She has a  doctorate in War Studies from King's College, London in 1996.

despardes.com's Editor-in-Chief Irshad Salim conducted a two-part online interview with her on the subject of her upcoming book, Pakistan affairs and post 9/11 scenario.

Following are the excerpts of the first part of the online interview:

Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa-Aghairshadsalim28: So what is this book about?

asidd66: This book is about military business operations with a case study of Pakistan.

irshadsalim28: What about Bangladesh and India?

asidd66: Bangladesh has it to but not India

irshadsalim28: So what prompted you to write this book?

asidd66: I was a civil servant. During the course of my work I had to deal with numbers of military spending and doing that one slowly realized that a lot was hidden. It is the search for numbers that took me in this direction. The other thing is that it is essential to understand the dynamics of the institution that virtually controls Pakistan's past, present and future.

irshadsalim28: Ok so who did you work for as a civil servant?

asidd66: I joined the civil service in 1988 and left in 2001. Served in military accounts, defense audit and later the navy.

irshadsalim28: Going back to Pak army biz, what are your findings?

asidd66: Several. First, the military has become predatory engaging in political and economic predation. Second, political predation is not complete without economic predation. Third, military has mutated into a separate class that shares interests with other members of the ruling elite. Finally, because the military protects its vested interests, it leads to alienation of the masses.

irshadsalim28: When did all this start?

asidd66: It dates back to the early 1950s. The business ventures were started with the establishing of the first foundation called the Fauji Foundation in 1953. This was established with the war veteran's rehabilitation fund of Rs. 18 million.

irshadsalim28: Why do u consider forming Fauji Foundation a predatory step by the army?

asidd66: Listen you have to understand the concept. A politically strong entity that engages in political predation needs to feel economically or financially autonomous. This completes the picture of predation. The generals thought that they wanted to establish independent means of providing for their welfare and not depending on the civilians like it happened in India. The financial autonomy gradually created the logic for greater interest in political control.

irshadsalim28: Give me one or two instances when the 1953 move swirled into predation.

asidd66: It started right then with Ayub Khan and his cabal getting agricultural land and establishing independent means for themselves.
Look at Ayub Khan. He not only got several squares of agricultural land in Sindh, he also established his sons into business. Look at the entire lot of generals at the moment. a Major General has a legal worth of about Rs. 300 million. These are conservative estimates.

irshadsalim28: Going back to Pak army's economic superpower...What percentage of the GDP and GNP is it?

asidd66: This is difficult to calculate but their own estimates are about 4 % of GDP. I would say that their share in private sector assets is about 7-10 percent of private sector assets. This is a large number for any single group.

irshadsalim28: Can you translate that into crores?

asidd66: 7-10 percent of private sector assets cannot be translated but I can give you another figure: They are worth about Rs. 200 billion. It is just the business. If you put in real estate then we are talking about a Rs 1 trillion plus economy.

irshadsalim28: You mean Pak army's side economy?

asidd66: Yes. This includes real estate, businesses done by subsidiaries, organizations and individuals. You have to understand that this economy is predatory by nature because it does not accept any form of civilian control over it. It is independent in terms of planning, appropriation of funds, etc.

irshadsalim28: If Pak army's assets total Rs 1 trillion can they fund  Pakistan's annual budget wholly or partially if they have to?

asidd66: This would, converting these resources into liquid assets and then it would be possible to pay. A lot of these resources are state resources that could provide for military expenditure and more. It is difficult to say that this money would fund the entire budget. Of course, it can but over what period? These assets were acquired over time and their value should be added to the annual defense budget.

irshadsalim28: What was the defense budget for the year 2001?

asidd66: 131 billion. If u add these numbers the budget would escalate to over Rs. 400 billion

irshadsalim28: When u left in 2001 how many generals, etc were there who form the command structure of Pak forces?

asidd66: Brigadier and up would be a few hundred.

irshadsalim28: So if we assume 100 then 100 times 300 million = 30 billion is the legal worth of army's command structure correct?

asidd66: it is more but don't get into these fancy numbers.. plus the higher you go the more pricy you become. A full general is worth Rs 500 million plus

irshadsalim28: Have you in the process of writing your book researched the worth of those generals who "wrote history" of Pakistan

asidd66: Which ones are you referring to?

irshadsalim28: Ayub, Yayha, Zia, Musa, Tikka, et al

asidd66: I do not intend writing a sensational thriller

irshadsalim28: How much land does the forces own in each province?

asidd66: Difficult to bifurcate but to give you a taste - they own about 7-9 million acres in Punjab alone

irshadsalim28: What percentage is it of whole of Punjab?

asidd66: I am still trying to figure this out. It is not an issue of what percentage is this of Punjab but that a major portion of state land is appropriated by one group

irshadsalim28: What about Sindh?

asidd66: My sense is that it is less in Sindh

irshadsalim28: Why is that?

asidd66: Most of the land is around the 2 barrages constructed after independence. Because they didn't make new barrages.

irshadsalim28: What is their modus operandi in getting these lands allotment

asidd66: 10 % of land, according to the colonization of land Act 1912, is allotted to the military

irshadsalim28: 10% everywhere?

asidd66: Yes it would be everywhere land is found. Colonization of land refers to each land reclaimed due to creation of water channels and other irrigation projects. However, they tend to get more in Punjab

irshadsalim28: Does India have this act too?

asidd66: No. They got rid of such acts when they did land reforms. Remember India is a state moving towards capitalism. A capitalist state would not create means for institutionalizing feudalism

irshadsalim28: Are you saying Pak army has institutionalized feudalism?

asidd66: I am saying that it is a feudal institution as well

irshadsalim28: So in that case their interests converge with feudal system correct?

asidd66: Yes

irshadsalim28: Do u think they resisted land reform along with the feudal?

asidd66: I wouldn't say that they resisted but they had sufficient stakes not to pursue a policy that had a negative impact on their benefits. For example, who buys the land the Faujis sell? The local feudal or the new rural capitalist class that is equally feudal in nature. Why should the officers then try to destroy the class that bails them out financially. After 1999, generals have started to keep their lands

irshadsalim28: What happened after 1999

asidd66: Since the value of land has gone up, especially after 9/11, generals now keep lands and have turned into absentee land lords

irshadsalim28: Why did the value of land in Pak go up after 9/11

asidd66: Because of the money that started to flow in from Pakistani expats plus other Muslim countries

irshadsalim28: What is their modus operandi in getting these lands allotted to generals individually and to their housing societies collectively?

asidd66: The provincial governments allot the land to the Ministry of Defense who then gives the land to the three services for further dispersal. The land is also given to the Jawans but the quantity is lesser than what is given to the senior officers. Plus, the generals get greater facilities in making the land cultivable.

irshadsalim28: All this is based on 1912 colonization of land act that India got rid of and Pak still has?

asidd66: Yes, but they have done alterations as well. For instance, the act does not say that land meant for operational purpose be appropriated for personal use. It is against the law

irshadsalim28: Are you saying that land meant for operational purposes are or have been appropriated to the generals for personal use or to the housing societies?

asidd66: Of course. All land in the cities is military land turned into housing colonies

irshadsalim28: Why did u resign?

asidd66: I thought I could do much more with my time by writing and joining academia. Had gone on secondment from the civil service. Refused to take uniform.

irshadsalim28: Were you forced to resign or ever asked to resign due to your findings, etc?

asidd66: I wasn't forced but things were looking unpleasant when I left. There was a lot of arm twisting and it was getting unpleasant

irshadsalim28: Is it true that you were one of the whistle blowers who started to bring to light financial dealings in the forces?

asidd66: I am not sure if that is the right term but i was trying my best to put things in perspective such as analyzing and opposing weapons procurement deals that would not benefit the navy.

irshadsalim28: Is it true that more than once you had unpleasant analytical discussions with your superiors in such matters that led to arm twisting, etc

asidd66: We often had unpleasant discussions and arm twisting as well

irshadsalim28: What is the conclusion of your book?

asidd66: Simple: The political leadership in Pakistan has to negotiate the military's gradual withdrawal from the economy if they want democratic institutions to grow

irshadsalim28: Benazir Bhutto and the World Bank have voiced similar views, do you concur with them then?

asidd66: Of course

irshadsalim28: In the light of the post 9/11 scenario where the West have given a cart blanche to Pak army on all matters, where do your findings stand?

asidd66: The military always had the carte blanche from the West. They need to see that the alienation of society is one of the consequences of military's predation. Where does the poor man go in Pakistan, Turkey and Indonesia if not to God. There is no other means of transferring power except alternative ideologies, especially when the military has turned into a class and protects its interests along with other elite groups

irshadsalim28: Isn't the West party to Pak army's predatory growth as an economic institution?

asidd66: It benefits too

irshadsalim28: Specially during the Afghan war the west looked the other way, no?

asidd66: They have always looked the other way. They ignored Ayub, Yahya as well..

irshadsalim28: In that case why is the World Bank crying foul now? Is it because their interests are colliding now?

asidd66: It is making nice noises not crying foul. It will raise objections but what have they done about it. The man who once was part of the World Bank is now Governor State Bank of Pakistan

irshadsalim28: At what value does the army buy land?

asidd66: Between Rs. 30-60 per acre. In some cases they pay more. This refers to the private housing schemes

irshadsalim28: You mean in Defense society in Karachi, the army gets land from the provincial govt for 30 to 60 rupees an acre only?

asidd66: There are 2 methods for getting land. All the military land converted for personal use is given at the ridiculous price I quoted. Then there are other schemes where they pay a little more. For instance, the Cantt board distributed plots of 500 yards each by appropriating part of the parking lot of the Karachi stadium. Each plot was for about Rs 600,000

irshadsalim28: What was the fair market value of each plot at that time?

asidd66: One and a half crore

irshadsalim28: Who got these plots?

asidd66: Generals. The bulk goes to generals. This was done by General Tauqeer Zia. As Chairman Cricket Control Board he authorized himself to return this land that once belonged to the Cantt board for further distribution

irshadsalim28: Any more instances of such land grabbing?

asidd66: The entire Lahore Cantt was turned into housing schemes.  In fact, except for Defense phase I & II (Lahore), the rest of the land does not even belong to the military

irshadsalim28: How many acres is Lahore Cantt if u know?

asidd66: About 8000 to 10,000

irshadsalim28: What is its fair market worth now

asidd66: Runs into billions.  It should be around Rs. 700 billion

irshadsalim28: What was the "grabbing price"

asidd66: As I said, Rs. 30-60. This is the rate that officers pay

irshadsalim28: Thanks for your candid responses

asidd66: Thanks. Will catch up with you tomorrow....

[ALOCHONA] Baitul Mukarrom showing sign of Lal Masjid of Pakistan

There is every reason for people with conscious to be worried about which direction our country is moving toward. In absence of caretaker governments inability to handle Isalmist bigots is creating an atmosphere where people have to take the law into their own hand to challenge mullah's plan to turn our country a backward state of Taliban.

Jamaat-e-Islami  lead terrorist are burning not just the cars and motorcycle and beating police they put prayer rugs of Baitul Mukarrom on fire. Mercilessly beat Muslim devotees who went to the mosque for prayer. It happened not just in Dhaka but in Chittagong too. Followers of Islami Chatro Shibir the student wing of Jamaat-e_Isalmi attacked police station and a mosque without any provocation.

Three members of Islamist outfits beat up a policeman, two with the snatched shotgun and helmet while the other with a bamboo stick, after the cop fell behind his retreating colleagues who chased the agitators near Baitul Mukarram National Mosque yesterday. Photo: STAR
Baitul Mukarrom mosque, showing sign of what happened with Lal Masjid of Pakistan. Baitul Mukarrom is no longer a place of worship but a den of fanatic terrorist led by Jamaat-E-Isalmi . This is out national mosque and we must claim it back.

I will ask civil society, forward looking political organization, women's right organization, Islamic organization, especially Sector Commanders Forum to declare Baitul Mukarrom our national mosque free of terrorist. Call for a especial National Prayer Session in Baitul Mukarrom and return the mosque to Muslim devotees. Take oath to fight one last time to free this country from religious bigots. These are the same people who killed our brother, sisters, fathers and mother in 1971 in the name of Islam. These are the same people who raped our women and handed them to brutal Pakistani military force as Maal-e-goni-mat.

Progressive political parties have to take a stand on this issue; nation wants to know where they stand. If they fail to take a stand in favor of fifty percent population of the country then they have no right to ask out vote.

Civil Society irrespective of creed, gender,  religious belief and political identity have to make demand similar to what Sector Commanders Forum pressed that political party declare that they will not associate with religious bigots and will pass women's equal right act if they voted to power. I will urge the civil society to boycott any political entities that will not come forward in favor of women's equal right.

Where is our Nobel Laureate Dr. Younus? His Nobel peace prize is a direct result of our deprived women's. He could not win this prize without he women's effort, why he is not talking? Unfortunately he never ever took stand on any issue that our country faces. When peace of the country was falling apart because of dummy president Dr. Iajuddin's illegal anti constitutional stand, it was Dr. Younus who came out to support him and asked Iajuddin not to listen to anyone and go forward with secret blue print election. I hope at least once in a life time Dr. Younus will come out of his egg shell and stand beside the people.

Where half of the population is women who the mullahs are to stop women's equal right?

It is the woman who earns the maximum foreign currency of the country giving their sweet and blood working 12 + hour shift in a garments industry, who are these people who wants to stop them from their legitimate equal right?

It is the women, who makes her all out effort in agro economy and it is because of women farmers our agriculture sector is flourishing day by day. Male farmers only farms on the other hand the female farmers not just farms but takes care of wellbeing of entire family, who are the mullahs to stop that forward march.

Every citizen who believes in Bangladesh, every citizen who believes in the constitution of the country has to abide by it. Our constitution gives the equal right to its entire citizen. Bangladesh government who took oath under this constitution has to abide by it upheld it and protects it from anyone who wants to destroy it. If they fail to protect the constitution which we received with the sacrifice of millions of mutterers then surely we will fight on their behalf to protect it.

Wake of son's of mothers, protest who wants your mother's right to be revoked in the name of religion. Mother who kept you with her love in her womb for nine months this is your time to return her not favor but her right. Fight until your last breath for your own mother and sisters right which ultimately will protect your rights too.
Let us walk together out of darkness toward the light
With a sincere hope for victory of truth and justice over untruth and injustice

Hundreds of Islamist activists clashed with police for hours on the second day of violent protests in the city's Baitul Mukarram National Mosque area yesterday, leaving over 200 people injured.

Police used batons and fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to break up demonstrations against the recently announced national women development policy in defiance of the state of emergency.

At least 52 policemen and five journalists were among the injured.

Some 17 people were arrested in connection with the clashes. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mazharul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Motijheel zone last night said they filed a case accusing over 100 people of assault on police and looting firearms.

An intelligence official requesting not to be named told The Daily Star that they have already identified those inciting violence. "We have suggested that the government take a tough line against them," he added.

Eyewitnesses said violence broke out at around 1:35pm, minutes after Jum'a prayers when police barred a procession coming from the north gate of the mosque. Incensed, the other members of the radical Islamist outfits who were preparing to join the march began throwing projectiles at the law enforcers.

As chase and counter-chase continued for hours, hundreds of those who went to the mosque for Friday prayers became trapped inside.

At around 3:00pm, some demonstrators caught a policeman cut off from his colleagues and beat him up. They snatched his shotgun and broke it up into pieces, said the media cell of DMP.

Earlier, some 50 people were wounded in Thursday's fight between the Islamist groups and law enforcers.

Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed announced the National Women Development Policy-2008 on March 8, causing a firestorm of protests among Islamist organisations.

Since then, some radical groups have been claiming that the policy gives equal inheritance rights to men and women, while the government maintained there is no such provision.

In efforts to scotch the discontent, four advisers of the caretaker government on March 27 met Islamic leaders and formed a review committee headed by the acting Khatib of Baitul Mukarram Mosque.

A report by the committee is due by April 16. But some Islamic groups including Ahkam-e-Shariah Hifajat led by Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Anti-Quran Law Resistance Committee of Allama Azizul Huq Shaikhul Hadith, Islamic Law Implementation Committee led by Islami Oikya Jote's Fazlul Huq Amini and Chhatra Jamiat Andolon of Maulana Muhiuddin Ahmed opted not to wait and launched violent street agitation Thursday.

A huge number of students from madrasas across the city took part in the pitched battles with police yesterday. They acted on instructions from their teachers who were staying inside the mosque, said the eyewitnesses.

After around four hours of fighting, areas like Purana Paltan, Dainik Bangla intersection, Bangabandhu Avenue, Gulistan and national stadium were littered with brickbats as smog from tear gas hung heavily over them.

The agitators launched attacks on the police from every corner of Baitul Mukarram and took shelter inside whenever police went on a counter-offensive. They took bricks off under-construction structures on the mosque premises and split those into pieces to hurl at police.

Around 1,500 law enforcers in riot gear struggled all along to control the crowds.

At one stage, rumours spread that three of the protesters were killed, adding fuel to the agitation.

To escape tear gas, both the law enforces and agitators burned carpets of the mosque, woods, furniture of several street side stalls and papers making the air heavier and adding to the sufferings.

The marchers chanted slogans demanding resignation of Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury and the interim government.

The injured policemen were admitted to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital while journalists, pedestrians and protesters received treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and various private medical facilities.

DMCH sources said 22 madrasa students were admitted there.

Monirul Islam and Hasan Raja of Prothom Alo, Abu Taher Khokon of New Age, and Belal Hossain of Ekushey TV--all photographers--were badly injured.

Of the policemen wounded, condition of inspector Selimuzzaman, Sergeant Israfil, Sub-Inspector Kamrul, and constables Belayet, Enamul, Emdad, Kamrul, Monir, Kabir, Shafique, and Sarwar was stated critical, according to the DMP media cell.

An official of the cell told The Daily Star last night that during the clashes, police shot 312 tear gas shells and 243 rounds of rubber bullets.

DMP (Motijheel) DC Mazharul Islam said, "They attacked first, forcing us to retaliate with baton-charge and tear gas."

He said at least 35 platoons were engaged to disperse the agitators till 3:30pm.

Meanwhile, Islami Oikya Jote Chairman Fazlul Haque Amini at a press conference at Purana Paltan in the afternoon alleged that police attacked them without provocation.

He claimed that more than 100 of their workers were injured in the clashes.

"We called a rally to drum up support for the anti-Quran rules," he added.

Amini also said, "If our demands are not met, the fire ignited today [yesterday] will spread like wildfire across the country."

Asked about mosaic stones taken off the mosque's wall, he said he was not aware of it.
