[mukto-mona] Hillary Clinton's Pyrrhic victory in Pennsylvania

Hillary Clinton's Pyrrhic victory in Pennsylvania

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Technically, the primaries for the Democratic Party will not be over before June 3, 2008 but for all practical purposes it will end when Pennsylvanians would cast their votes on April 22, 2008.  The demographics of this state with diverse urban and rural electorates won't allow either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama to have a lopsided victory.

Quite a few political pundits in America now agree that the contest will be a tight one and whoever wins the election would have a razor-thin margin of victory.  This means that the margin of difference in pledged delegates will hardly change between Obama and Clinton.  The Obama campaign will have the bragging rights to say that thus far they have won in popularity contest, pledged delegates, and number of states.  This however cannot be said of super delegates who indeed will decide the nomination when Democrats meet in Denver, Colorado, sometime in August 2008 to nominate their candidate for November 4, 2008 presidential election.

There are altogether 842 super delegates of them about 354 are still uncommitted.  Among 488 or so committed super delegates, Senator Clinton has the edge but by only 26.  Therefore, all eyes are on the uncommitted super delegates.  In the last week about 8 super delegates have expressed their desire to endorse the candidacy of Senator Obama.  Prominent among them were Senator Sam Nunn who is a veteran foreign policy and Pentagon expert and Dr. Robert Reich, the 22nd Secretary of labor under the Clinton Administration.  A day before the Pennsylvania primary an AFP report from Jerusalem had indicated that the 39th American President, Jimmy Carter, is leaning towards Obama camp. We are yet to see any movement lately for nationally reputable super delegate to move towards Clinton's side.  This hardly bodes well for her candidacy.

In this regard, the worst news to hit America came a day before Pennsylvanians would go to the polling stations.  In Jerusalem Mr. Carter, who is wrapping up a Middle East tour in which he drew criticism from both Washington and Israel for meeting with leaders of Islamist Hamas movement, said, "As a super delegate, I think I ought to stay as flexible as I can, but I obviously observe what goes on around me. My little town of Plains voted for Obama, and as you know my state of Georgia voted for Obama, and all of my children, all of my grandchildren and all of their spouses are for Obama... That's as far as I've gone." Carter is astute enough to say that he will go public with his decision to support either Obama or Clinton only after June 2, 2008 when all the primaries will conclude.  But he gave enough indication through his recent talk to reporters on which side his support rests.

It is expected that after the Pennsylvania primaries many of the undecided super delegates will gravitate towards Obama.  The reasons are the following: Obama is expected to win big in North Carolina where primaries will be held on Tuesday, May 6 2008.  Also, the Illinois senator is supposed to win the primaries in Indiana, which is next door to Obama's home state, on the same day.  Then, there will primaries in West Virginia a week later on May 13, 2008 and two primaries in the states of Kentucky and Oregon a week after West Virginians cast their vote.  On June 1, 2008 the Puerto Ricans would cast their votes in the primaries and two days later on June 3, 2008 when Montana and South Dakotans made their selection would the primary seasons be over for Democrats.  In the previous years the primaries normally do not drag this far.  On Super Tuesday (the first Tuesday in February) whoever gains the most pledged delegates, gets the momentum and ends up being the candidate of choice.  But in this year the Democratic Party came up with a list of fine and accomplished candidates.  From the list of 4 possible candidates (Clinton, Obama, Edwards, and Richardson), voters in subsequent primaries get to choose between Obama and Clinton.  After the Super Tuesday's vote Obama had a string of victories in 10 or so states and that put a damper on Clinton campaign.

The other factor to be considered is the flow of money into the Obama and Clinton campaign.  At one point after Super Tuesday the Clinton campaign had the money squeeze when Hillary opened her purse to loan 5 million dollars to her campaign to keep it afloat.  However, the case was a complete reversal in Obama campaign since it was awash with money in March and April.  It is to be noted here that Obama was receiving donations from common and ordinary electorates; however, donations for Clinton were coming from a select few who opened their wallets to pay the maximum.  Therefore, in time of the need those diehard Clintonites could not donate anymore money due to ceiling placed by the election rule.  In April 2008 while Obama campaign was flushed with cash (over 50 million dollars), Clinton only had about 12 millions.  Therefore, Senator Clinton had to make do with one-fourth the sum her rival had.  The Obama campaign because of their cash position was able to run more TV Ads in various cities and towns allover Pennsylvania to narrow the 20% gap in poll numbers to only 3-5% 3 days before April 22 primaries.  If by the stroke of a genius Obama wins the state by a razor thin margin, all the credit should go to almighty dollars, which his campaign had in its war chest!  The latest poll, however, indicates that Senator Clinton may come out victorious in Pennsylvania even though she might have a Pyrrhic victory in this populous state.

The Clinton campaign's decision to go ballistic on Obama to stop his momentum in Pennsylvania had certainly backfired.  Polls taken nationally by various reputable polling agencies in mid April 2008 had indicated that Hillary Clinton's scathing attack on Obama had earned her a bad reputation.  Over 58% Americans now think that she portrays a negative image and many voters do not trust her anymore.  Her campaign had thrown the proverbial kitchen sink to Obama hoping that something negative will stick to her opponent and that will surely tarnish his image and bring him down.  But that hardly happened.  The mean-spiritedness in Hillary Clinton thus came into foray and American electorates had sensed that and they did not like the look of it.

Senator Clinton had this idea in her head that she is the superior and well-liked candidate among the Democratic contenders for the White House.  But the ground realities were very different.  The lynchpin of her candidacy was her experiences in Washington.  Senator Obama however preached a very different sermon.  He canvassed for the hope for a change in the way politics are being done in nation's capital.  His ardor for bi-partisanship and loathing for lobbyists influencing public policies in the Congress had struck a chord among electorates.  Senator Clinton and her campaign officials are yet to fathom out the power of that message emanating from Obama campaign.  Thus, all the negativities surrounding Obama's "association" with African American preacher Reverend Jeremiah Wright and 1960s revolutionary activists, Professor William Ayers, hardly made any dent in the senator's growing popularity.

When everything is said and done in the aftermath of June 3 primaries, Hillary Clinton will seat with her husband cum adviser, Bill Clinton, and she will passionately ask her dear spouse what went terribly so wrong with her candidacy.  The blame game will start in earnest in her home and in the end Hillary Clinton will have to bear the brunt of the accusation that she started a very vicious and nasty fight to assert her "entitlement" to become the nominee of her party.

There are some lessons to be learnt from Hillary Clinton's exercise in futility.  Never become so ambitious, bold, and never underestimate the power of one's opponent.  Perhaps the Clintons still live vicariously in their glory days of 1990s.  That world does not exist anymore.  With the agony of Iraq War, a looming danger of deep recession, and the long-term impact of globalization, the American electorates are not ready to accept Hillary Clinton's candidacy.  The sooner Clintons accept this harsh reality, the better it would be for them and their loyalists.  In the meantime, the divided and injured Democratic Party needs time to heal the chasm and get ready to fight the election against Senator McCain who did splendidly to promote his candidacy finding his Democratic challengers engaged in a bitter internecine fight.  Come November, his Democratic challenger and a united Democratic Party will give him a fight never seen before in recent presidential elections.  All the geniuses of Karl Roves will not be able to mar the character of McCain's challenger.  The beacon of hope and change is a mighty one and to slay it will be a Herculean job for which McCain is ill-prepared, to say the least.

Re: [mukto-mona] Aparthib's quantum analogy and racial discrimination.

"Electrons in their atomic orbits do move with speed close to that of light. It has to move with that speed to counter-balance strong nuclear force."--------Dr Jiten Roy

JitenDa

Are you sure? Or you are guessing! Nuclear forces are short-range forces. Moreover, electrons are not nuclear particles. How can they experience nuclear force? Do nuclear particles really exert any nuclear force on the electrons?

It is the nuclear protons with positive charge that exert electrostatic attractive force (relatively longer range force) on negatively charged electrons. And this attractive electrostatic force keeps electrons revolving around the nucleus. Compare this with the attractive gravitational force that keeps the earth revolving around the sun.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

With regards.

[mukto-mona] Bhattarai's pro-India hint

CPN(Maoist) ideologue's interview to DNA suggests a distinct pro-India line which may not be just tactical. Rather he is more cautious towards China.

Please find the interview herewith.
Sankar Ray

Borders will be regulated: Baburam Bhattarai By Josy Joseph 21Apr 08(http://www.dnaindia.com/dnaprint.asp?newsid=1160629)

Full Interview:Dr Baburam Bhattarai, the Maoist ideologue and an architect with a JNU doctorate, is set to play a crucial role in writing the new Constitution for the democratic republic of Nepal.
If the Maoist proposal for an executive presidency goes through, Bhattarai would be the prime minister, and his mentor Prechanda, the chief of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), would be the president of Nepal.
With their emphatic victory in the elections, the former armed rebels of Nepal are set to take this impoverished nation into a new era.
Over a cup of warm lemon tea at his temporary residence on a hilltop in Kathmandu, Bhattarai discussed with DNA's Josy Joseph their policy proposals to usher in rapid economic growth to Nepal. This is the first detailed media interview the Maoist leadership has given to any media outlet on their governance plan for Nepal.

You are very clear about declaring Nepal a republic, and one of the first steps of the Constituent Assembly would be to remove the monarchy. How are you going to handle the royal assets, and other issues related to the proposal?
Nepal will be a democratic republic, it has already been decided. It is only to be executed. The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly will do that. 'Decide' is not the word, execution it is.
Only the technical matter is left, how it should be done, so we are now holding discussion with various parties. And if need be, we can hold discussions with the king also, if he can suggest a way to leave the scene, for a peaceful settlement of the issue.
About his assets, all his legitimate personal assets he can keep. But as a monarch, as a king, there are a lot of national properties, assets used by the king that would be national property.
What are these national assets?
Palaces, land, jungles, etc, which have been part of the royal family, but they would be nationalised. The present king was a businessman earlier, so he can keep them. Resorts and so on, whatever he wants from them he can keep.
Even if he is forced out of power, the king could remain a rallying point for dissident groups, isn't it? It could hamper your efforts at building a democratic republic. How would you handle such a possibility? Would you want him to leave Nepal?
He shouldn't be that, because overwhelming majority of the people, 99% of them has voted in favour of a democratic republic.
So there is no chance for restoration of any sort of monarchy in Nepal.
Even then, some reactionary elements would try to create trouble. That would be unfortunate, and it won't be to his benefit also. So we hope that he wouldn't commit that mistake. If he lives as a private citizen in Nepal, engaged in his private, commercial activities, etc, then we would allow that. It is up to him, whether he wants to stay in Nepal or go out.
There have been complaints about your PLA (Peoples Liberation Army-armed wing of Maoists) and YCL (Young Communist League- youth wing) creating trouble during elections.
Prime minister Koirala has suggested that you must immediately dissolve PLA  appropriately. Security sector reforms are also very critical for your long term legitimacy as a political force.
This has already been settled, it is part of the comprehensive peace process. There will be integration of the PLA and the NA (Nepalese Army), and a new security apparatus would be created. All these have been settled in principle, only now it has to be executed in practice.
Would you like the Army to be involved in the entire process of this integration?
Army should follow the decision of the government. Army is not an autonomous body, but a part of the government.
must be no dispute on that.
Related to it is the question of the present leadership of the Nepalese Army. For years they have been involved, at
the behest of the palace, in fighting Maoists. Would you look at action against them for atrocities against the PLA
and others?
There is a difference. We were fighting against the monarchy, and the Army was used by the monarchy. Now the monarchy isgone, the scenario has totally changed.
So you have no problems with the Army leadership?
We would like to restructure the whole state apparatus, including the Army, bureaucracy and judiciary. As part of the
restructuring there could be some changes, but there won't be any individual witch-hunting. The whole system would bechanged, democratized.
You said about restructuring. Do you have any model in mind?
Our state was a unitary state. Now it will be a federal state. When we are a federal state, then bureaucracy, judiciary, police,military-all will have to reorganise for the federal system. In that context there would be some restructuring. The whole statestructure was created to serve an autocratic monarchy.
So you will constitute a commission to look at this federalisation?
Yes, we will form a commission. And then we will go into details and based on its recommendation we will implement the process. Once the government is formed we will form the restructuring commission.
You have in the past shown interesting in understanding governance structure of Switzerland and some
Scandinavian countries. Is there any specific model in mind for Nepal?
We will draw lessons from various countries. But we will develop our own model, we will not follow any one model.
Over the past few years there has been a huge flight of capital out of Nepal. You have been trying to reassure
business community about protecting their interests. But how will you ensure that capital stays put in Nepal,
while protecting your core support group of peasants and rural workers?
What we want to reform is the feudal system, which we want to change. We want to develop a national economy, there is nocontradiction. If there is economic development, we will provide jobs to the unemployed and use the surplus labour from theagricultural sector into the industrial sector. It will be good for the agricultural sector peasantry.
You are looking at a massive industrialisation?
Yes, our whole focus will be on industrialisation of the country. We will invite investors, but of course we would like to encourage domestic investors. Apart from that we would need foreign capital also. We need massive infrastructure, road networks, rail networks, hydro projects.
Do you have any projected economic growth for the coming years?
We have asked our economists to work on it. Since we have to bring about a miraculous growth, since we have to bring about a massive economic revolution. For that we have asked our friends to start on models.
Nepal Army is a very colonial Army, which still treats the Indian Army chief as a honourary General, and the
Nepalese Army chief is a honourary General in Indian Army, etc. What is your take on such practices?
These are old fashioned practices. They will fade away with time, I think. These are not big deal.
India has also been providing subsidized military assistance to Nepal Army. In your view, is there a need for it
now that the situation has changed here?
It will depend on the overall restructuring of the security sector. We will discuss on that.
The Army will remain?
Some sort of Army will remain. We will decide what should be the size of the Army, what form of the Army, etc.
And then you will work out the kind of relationship with the Indian Army?
Yeah.
What about the large number of Gurkha soldiers serving in Indian and British Armies? Would you put a blanket
ban on it?
No, we are not talking of banning. Our aim is to go in for massive industrialisation so that will provide employment opportunity within the country so that our people are not forced to migrate and join armies. Then it will automatically stop.
What should be done to Narayanhiti Palace, that imposing symbol in Kathmandu of Nepal monarchy?
It is my personal opinion that it would be ideal for a historic museum. It is part of history, so people can go in and look up.
Could you elaborate about your concept of executive presidency?
We would want to have an executive president, with a prime minister and cabinet, with a power-sharing between the president and prime minister. We would like to follow this system. In the interim period, until we have a new constitution we will have to work in consultation with other parties. If there is a political consensus we would like to follow a presidential model. In case that doesn't happen we will have to find something in between presidential and prime-ministership.

Can you explain a little more about the governance concept?
There are some models existing, like in France. There is a president and there is a prime minister. President will be directly elected by the people, and the prime minister will be elected by the legislature. In US, there is only a president, in Britain there is an executive prime ministership. Our model will be something closer to France, and even Sri Lanka.

And you have proposed 11 autonomous regions for the federal republic that you are proposing?
Yes, the autonomous regions will be governed by their governors and chief ministers. The governors would be directly elected by the people.
Food prices are soaring, and you don't have any PDS system here, throwing the poor to the mercy of market.
We will have to look at it. We are thinking that PDS system must be introduced in Nepal so that people below poverty line getessential food items.
In response to the food price increase, India has banned export of food items, and it seems to be having negative
fallout on Nepal.
We will talk to the Indian government about that, we hope something positive comes out of it. We have very close relations with India. And unless and until we have a good understanding with India it is very difficult to have positive outcomes.
Are you going to Delhi soon?
We haven't decided yet.
The big debate in Delhi is about your relations with China, especially the right wing believes you are very close to
the Chinese. How are you going to manage your relations with India and China?
These are all absurd rumours spread by vested interests. We will have very good relations with India because our economy is very closely linked to India. And politically, socially and culturally we have very close ties with India, and that will continue. So there is no reason to doubt that once Maoists come to power, Nepal will get closer to China. That is not true. Of course, being an independent, sovereign country we will have good relations with all our neighbours including China. But practically, we have to deal more with India. That way our relations with India will be very cordial.
But you have been demanding review of the Indo-Nepal friendship treaty of 1950. What is the core of your
demands, though many Indian officials point out that it is heavily biased in favour of Nepal?
The 1950 treaty was signed 60 years back when there was no democracy in Nepal. So there are colonial hang ups in the
treaty. Time has changed, democracy has come in, and people's aspirations have changed so we have to update it for the times. There are certain provisions like treating each others' citizens equal, with open borders. There is one billion people in India and just 20 million here.
You are not comfortable with the present open borders?
These open borders will be regulated. It is because of these open borders that there are a lot of irritants today. There is a lot of smuggling going on, lot of illegal transactions going on. There have to be some control, so if we have regulated borders these things can be controlled. There should be some checkpoints for transactions. Both are suffering today, both Nepal and India.
And the travel between the two countries?
Today, with any government ID one can come into Nepal and vice versa. There should be some regulation, the records must be maintained. The details can be worked out. These things will be worked out based on mutual consultations. There is no reason for alarm.
What is your stand on the hydro power projects along the border? Recently two Indian firms have been awarded
hydro-power projects on Nepal side. Would you want to review them?
We have a huge water potential. We want to harness our hydro power potential. We need big capital, and modern technology.
So without inviting foreign capital we cannot exploit it. In that sense we welcome all investors, especially from India because all our electricity will have to be exported to India.
We have nothing against Indian companies, and the government. What we are saying is that these contracts must be awarded in a very open manner. There is a lot of corruption, underhand dealings in these contracts today. That must be done away with. We will encourage and welcome Indian companies to invest in Nepal.

Nepal is completely dependent on India for its petroleum products and still owes the Indian Oil Corporation huge debt. You have had fuel riots here in the past. What action on that front?
All our petroleum products come from India today. We are going to remove this. We will look into this.
Corruption has been a key issue in your agenda.
There is big corruption here. We will appoint a commission to look into the issue of corruption, and it will be dealt with
severely. We will create a mechanism to deal with corruption.
What is your message to the Indian Maoists who still continue to fight the Indian state, shunning democratic
methods?
You see Maoism is a science of revolution. It has to be applied according to the concrete condition of the local country. We applied it in Nepal in our own way. We don't want to preach to anybody what to do, and what not to do. We wouldn't like to interfere in their affairs. We would be happy to share with them our lessons if they want to. But it is up to them.
The New Delhi security establishment keeps harping about the red-corridor from South India to Nepal and your
close linkages with ndian Maoists. How deep is it?
That is not true, that is not at all true. Some reactionary forces are trying to create alarm. That is not true.
You have had no contact at all with Indian Maoists?
Ideological, political relations we have had. But apart from that we have had no material relations with them.
Your party is heavily dominated by two individuals - Prachanda and you. How are you going to prevent the party
from slipping into an oligarchy?
Ours is a democratic party, we have learnt lessons from the experience of Soviet Union and China. What has happened in the 20th century we cannot repeat in the 21st century.
So we have developed the concept of democracy in the 21st century, so we had to democratise our party and democratise our state. In that way, we are not going to follow the old system followed elsewhere, but develop our own system of democracy for Nepal.
Nepal has for all these decades almost completely ignored Dalits in high seats of power, and very marginally
accommodated women. What about you?
We have given the best representation to women and Dalits. For the first time in the history of Nepal, there are so many Dalits in Parliament. In the parliamentary history of Nepal just one Dalit has been elected in the past.
Now, eight Dalits have been elected this time and all are from our party. Out of the 26 women elected so far, 23 are from our party. So that way we have given huge fillip to the representation of the oppressed classes in governance.
Nepal has a very strong oligarchy, and welfare has seldom gone beyond Kathmandu Valley. The first thing is the federal restructuring of the country so that all the regions get their own governments and autonomy.
Economic activities we will spread into various parts of the country, rather than getting it centralized in Kathmandu.
Are you looking at developing SEZs in the lines of India?
Whatever lessons have to be learnt we will. But we will not blindly copy any other model.
You have always maintained that the royal massacre of June 2001 was an international conspiracy. Are you
ordering a fresh and comprehensive probe into it?
See it was a huge conspiracy and it is now part of history. Since it is part of history we should know the actual facts. Ratherthan going by rumours we want to know facts. So there could be a commission to inquire into the entire episode.
There is a talk of compulsory military training for youth of the country. Can you elaborate further on that?
Our own idea is that since we are a small country sandwiched between two giants, China and India, we don't need a big standing Army. That would be a big economic burden, a mistake.
In stead of that we have a small standing Army and then we can give military training to all the adult members of the society.
That would be better for the security of the country. This is the idea we have, but after the new constitution is formed we will follow it. So the general idea is that we will have a small standing Army and give military training to all the adults in the society.
But when you merge the PLA with the Nepalese Army it would significantly increase the military strength isn't it?
We had about 30,000 PLA cadres. The UN has verified and registered over 20,000. We will restructure the whole thing so we can reduce the number of standing Army and raise some other forces, say industrial security force, border security force etc.
There are a significant number of analysts, both within the Indian government and outside, who believe that a
Nepal with monarchy and Nepali Congress as dominant party was better from New Delhi's perspective. How would
you like to respond to this assessment, especially since you have consistently accused India of being part of
various conspiracies in Nepal?
We would like to convey to our friends in India that there is a political change in Nepal but there is no reason to get alarmed.Democratic Nepal want to have a good relations with India, we want to work in close coordination with the government of India.
Some disgruntled elements will try to create misunderstanding. We must talk to each other wherever there is
misunderstanding. In the days to come, we are very confident, that we would have a very good relation with India. I wish we get full cooperation from India and its people. Indian businessmen have played a crucial role in Nepal.
In the days to come there would be better environment here for investment. We will invite them here. There is no reason to get panicky, or doubt our policies. It will be totally investor friendly atmosphere in Nepal. We want rapid economic growth in Nepal, we want to create more jobs in Nepal, we want to upgrade the basic life standards of our people, and keeping all that in mind we will invite foreign investment.
How big a role did India play in facilitating your coming over-ground and joining the political mainstream?
Basically it was a homegrown process, it was our own initiative. Indian government played quite a positive role, they didn't interfere. And they tried to facilitate the political dialogue when it started between the political parties. We have always appreciated that.

Why is there the Blasphemy Law?
Why human has to defend the God's Law if He is so powerful?
Can God defend his desciples by Himself without human help?

Anybody has answers?

[mukto-mona] Radharani Ari

Honourable Chief Minister, I am the same Radharani Ari of Nandigram. How many more times will your cadres rape me? (http://sanhati.com/news/759/)

Yes, I am the same person. The same Radharani Ari, resident of Nandigram Block, village – Gokulpur. Whether or not you remember me, I am not too sure, although by now the entire state of West Bengal has heard about me. I did not catch the limelight due to some creditable act of mine but on account of my misfortunes. I am a housewife of, by now infamous, Nandigram. My spouse is a marginal farmer with a holding of 3 bighas (1 Bigha = 0.1338 hectare) and this piece of agricultural land is our only source of a hand to mouth existence for our family. Other than me and my spouse we have six children - four daughters and two sons. When the movement against land acquisition started in Nandigram, when your party cadre along with policemen wearing slippers pounced on our village with bombs and guns, I was there along with all the others in the movement against land acquisition, to resist the onslaught. These people in the resistance movement were our neighbours, neighbours with whom we have lived in harmony for the past three generations. They were all agriculturists, thousands of us, men and women.

On 14 March 2007 my world went in to turmoil. I was no more to remain a homemaker in an obscure village. On that day I evolved to Radharani Ari. Since morning of that fateful day there was news in the air that police would be coming to break the resistance movement. Since dawn, before daybreak, hordes of people from the villages had gathered at Sonachura, beside Talpati canal. Children and women were in the forefront of the gathering. What happened next is known to all and known the best to you. Police and your party cadres in police uniform fired and advanced towards us and we were forced to retreat, the gathering was scattered helter-skelter and I finally took refuge in what I till then thought were the safe confines of my home. But it was safe no more.

At 2 pm in the afternoon of that day CPI(M) cadres had entered our house and they were all local faces known to me. Their names are Badal Garudas, Kalipada Garudas & Snehangshu Das. What followed can only be termed as behaviour of monstrous proportions and I became unconscious. I was later found in a nearby field and brought home by my husband. Sonachura, was surrounded and blockaded for the next two days and I could be taken to Nandigram hospital only after the siege was lifted. The aforesaid three persons were named by me to the police but the police did not record their names. I repeated their names to the CBI investigation team that came to investigate the 14 March incidents at Nandigram. I also mentioned the names to Balbir Ram one of the CBI officers. Badal and Kalipada were picked up by CBI but are you aware of the fate of Snehangshu?

Snehangshu Das is the CPI(M) candidate, in the forthcoming Panchayat elections, contesting the Gokulnagar gram panchayat from booth no. 167.

I have not hesitated in proclaiming that I have been raped, gang raped. I have said this in Kolkata, in Delhi, in Chennai, in Thiruvananthapuram. I have said, what I have said, with the hope I will get justice and the perpetrators of this horrendous crime on me will be punished. You had visited Nandigram recently and we heard your speech, your plea seeking forgiveness. There was supposedly a 'new dawn' over Nandigram but did things really change?

Yesterday evening (April 18, 2008) at 10 pm CPI(M) had taken out a procession that abruptly ended after half an hour. Suddenly a group of people attacked our house. "Open the door, you will meet your fate this time!" they shouted as they banged on the door and started breaking it with axes and hoes. The door finally gave in and the hooligans entered our house and attacked my son and my spouse. Hurt badly they fell down on the ground. The intruders forcibly lifted me and carried me away. Later my son, Bapi Adhikary and my spouse, Ajit Adhikary found me in a nearby field and brought me back home. I had to again retrace my steps to Nandigram hospital exactly 13 months and 5 days after I had been discharged from that place.

Honourable Chief Minister, this time again I recognised the perpetrators of this heinous crime on me. They are the same Snehangshu Das and Gurupada Patra, Manik Patra, Purna Das, Prakash Das, Raja Garu Das. I do not know whether they will be punished for their crime. I do not know whether you will come again to Nandigram and what you will say, what assurances you will give. I have realised that we will have to continue to live like this at your mercy and at the mercy of your police and party cadres.

Your speeches are sound bytes only, meant for audiences at meetings and not for gang rape victims like me. Or else how could I have had to survive hell, not once but twice. How can the perpetrator of that crime, twice over, be a CPI(M) party candidate in the forthcoming Panchayat election. Honourable Chief Minister, what have you got to say.

This first-person report appeared in the Doinik Statesman, Kolkata, 20 April 2008. It has been translated by Soumya Guhathakurta, Sanhati.

[mukto-mona] False defenders of Lenin

New devotees of capitalism & Lenin's statue by Sankar Ray

Eugène Edine Pottier , communard of Paris Commune of the 1870s and poet who wrote the L'Internationale will  turn agonizingly in his grave when the new-devotees of capitalism will raise their fist with a revolutionary posture, chanting  the song on 22 April in front of the statue of Vladimir Illyich Lenin in Kolkata on his 139th birthday.. Yes, I mean the hypocrites - top leaders of CPI(M) , India's largest Leftist party , including three polit bureau members, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose and commerce and industry minister Nirupam Sen, the new in the 17-member pack will all be there and chant the slogan, 'Long Live Revolution',but  faintly.

The very first public meeting, addressed by Sen, was at a seminar on 'culture and globalisation' , under the aegis of Spandan unit of the Indian People's Theatre Association, West Bengal. " In order to help develop consciousness, we have to walk along the path of globalisation", the new PBM said conceitedly. Among the participants was Harsh Neotia, CPI(M)-backed real estate tycoon who got delinked last year from the Gujarat Ambuja Cements, hived off to an MNC.

Sen, Bhattacharjee and Bose seem deliberately unaware of the growing  criticism  against globalization even from the non-Left circles among academics in the West in the wake of an unprecedented food crisis engulfing this planet. Michel Husson, a French economist and author of "Un pur capitalisme," [A Pure Capitalism] in an interview to L'Humanité, French communist daily, said, "This crisis was born from the bursting of the real estate bubble and is a relatively classic phenomenon. But what's new is the chain reaction that [was] unleashed. Financial deregulation and "securitization" led to very deep - and also extremely opaque - imbrications between investment banks and speculative funds. One rediscovers every day the scale of cumulative losses, which the IMF has just evaluated at $945 billion. The immensity of these losses explains why central banks' interventions have been unable to arrest the movement". The Fed, US financial regulator, slashed its rates below the inflation rate, injected liquidities, virtually purchased a big investment bank, Bear Stearns and  even exchanged $200 billion in Treasury Bills for questionable mortgage loans. But all this ended in a damp squib as  the real estate market continues to plunge. "Such a crisis can remain confined neither to the financial sphere nor to the United States: the United States is in recession and the IMF has just revised its forecasts for the global economy down again," Husson added.

Queerly, honchos of A K Gopalan Bhavan, national headquarters of CPI(M) like its general secretary Prakash Karat and ideologue Sitaram Yechury defend the LF government's new romance with globalization,  ticked off by the  mandarins of Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan, seat of party's West Bengal state committee. Karat told the media and the delegates during the 19th Congress (Coimbatore: 29 March-3 April 2008) that if the LF government disallows  SEZs , those investors would go to other states, while expressing general reservations against the SEZs which " are specifically delineated duty free enclaves treated as a foreign territory for  the purpose of industrial services and trade operations with exemption from customs duty and a more liberal regime in respect of  other levies, foreign investment and other transactions. Domestic regulations, restrictions and  infrastructure inadequacies are sought to be  eliminated in the SEZs for creating an internationally competitive environment (italics added), according to a notification by the LF government in the Gazette Extraordinary on 28 June 2003. This was okayed by Sen as minister of C & I. Two years before the UPA government got the SEZ Act in the Parliament passed unopposed, LF government did it in the West Bengal State Assembly with the connotation 'foreign territory'.  Karat has to keep the M A Bhaban in good humour. After all, West Bengal, with CPI(M) in power, will continue to be CPI(M)'s biggest coffer.

The French economist  stated further that capitalism today – meaning the war-mongering neo-liberal strain - "escaped all control. Struggling against its financial offshoots should lead to challenges to the absolute freedom of capital circulation, but also, more fundamentally, challenges to the growing exploitation of workers around the world. It's necessary, in other words, to close the speculation-feeding faucet "at the source."  Unfortunately, CPI(M) which, Karat's predecessor told the now-defunct Sunday Observer in the early 1990s, " is the only revolutionary party in India"

When we hear from Bhattacharjee and patriarch Jyoti Basu that the Left has to reposition itself in globalization, we find an echo of the anti-Leninist booklet, Global Capitalism and American Empire,  by Leo Panitch and Sam Gindin who argued that globalization is "inevitable and irreversible." Political Affairs . mouthpiece of CP of USA gave a rebuff. Capitalism "will continue to internationalize itself through the process we call "globalization" which is  just a euphemism for the domination of the world by a handful of powerful states dominated by financial and monopoly elites that continue to plunder the world in their own interests", it argued.

Lenin didn't foresee the specific historical development - "neoliberal" globalization dominated by one "superpower," but  predicted the trajectory of imperialism . But all this seems irrelevant to the CPI(M) biggies who mastered the art of lip service to Marxism-Leninism, caring little for the severed menu of auto-rickshaw drivers or  peddlers "selling food from behind wood carts". They know how to win elections. Which is why the party letter on organizing the unorganized a couple of years directed lower-committees to bring the unorganized together "boothwise", not town/villagewise. "Parliamentary cretinism", Marx coined one and a half century back in his Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte.

RE: [mukto-mona] Re: 'Holy Hate' : Real horror story from History!

Hello Avijit,
Thank you for your mail. It was nice of Dr. Akhteruzzaman to mention my name to you. Long long ago, I thought I would become the Avijit of that time. But soon I became Dostoyvosky's Idiot and took to sinple living of the simpletons on the plea that the Sun will take a few life-times to rise in Bangladesh. I decided to become nobody. But then, when this machine-God made its appearance, suddenly, I discovered your generation is already in the war winning battles. I felt totally relieved. My present job is to sit in the gallery shouting, dancing and clapping.
I have seen the structure of the book. I am happy to say there is no need for my kind of popular writing.
Thank you for all the respect showered on me.

Dear respected Belal Beg,

Thanks a lot for your post. I have kept my response to Mr. Gani with
further elaboration, here:

http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/avijit/holy_hate150408.htm

Some other members have also suggested keeping this document in our
future book. I think it would be a modest idea to include it in our
next book – "Biggan O Dhormo: Shonghat naki Shomonnoy". There is a
section "Dhormio Oshohishnuta" which probably can consume this
article. But before that, I have to remove the personal references
(including Mr. Gani's name) from the article. I do not want to
include as a letter format though.

You can see the outline of the upcoming book in the following link:

http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/avijit/call_for_article030408.htm

Why don't you contribute a Bangla article for our book too? We would
be very happy to get something from you on this occasion.

(On a personal note, Ret. Prof. M. Aktaruzzaman of Botany, DU
praised you a lot when I met him in his residence last year in
Dhaka. I did not have any opportunity to tell you this.)

Regards
Avijit
