[ALOCHONA] Re: True story of Grameen Bank and Yunus

Dear Robin

Sunita Paul is actually Sunit Pal from New York. It is he who has
been penetrated, in the fiullest sense of the word, by something
quite RAW and ugly. Sunit is actually the adopted, but abandoned,
child of the failed American transvestite called Ru Paul. Sunit is
himself a cross dressing goat herdsman from the plains of Rajasthan.
He is paid to writ such articles by right wing Hindu extremists who
are furious that Yunus is a Bangladeshi. Sunit seeks to use the money
from such articles to pay for a sex change at a famous hospital in
Pabna. His goal in life is to be artificially inseminated by a high
caste goat whom he secretly married last year in the basement of a
wealthy Hindu extremist from Silicon Valley. On his wedding night he
could not properly grapple with the goat. He was so excited that by
mistake he pushed his right index finger so deep into his right ear
that it became stuck. He has since been living his life with his
finger permanently stuck in his ear. He taps his keyboard with a
pencil stuck up his nose, with his right index finger in his ear and
his left index finger somewhere on his goat.

Such is the human condition and I ask you to all forgive Sunit and
wish him well.

Let us rather focus on people who think we owe them something special because of who their father was.

[mukto-mona] Aparthib's Quantum Analogy

Jiten and Subimal:

Thank you both for your responses.

Jiten, when I wrote my latest post, your response was not posted and that is why I wanted to confirm whether you were the classmate I knew.  I was burnt once on this score before when I sent an email who I thought was my former classmate.  I was deeply hurt.  I found out later that I had sent this email to the wrong person with the same name and similar academic background.  Therefore, I wanted to absolutely make sure that you were the Jiten I knew.  Your post confirmed that fact.  I will take this opportunity, after more than two decades, to thank you for your nice wedding present.  I am very happy to hear from you again.

Subimal, I appreciate your conferring me the status of "boro bhai," Deshi style, just because my younger brother was your classmate.  That is very heart warming.  This is one of the nice things I love about our Bengali or South Asian culture, which no amount of westernization has been able to erase so far.

Turning to the subject at hand, it seems Subimal completely agrees with my explanation while there may be some lingering doubts in Jiten's mind.  If that is the case, I want Jiten to think about the following thought experiment.  Jiten, assume that you are standing in a rotating platform with a pole at its center and a person is tied by a rope to the pole (you can make me that person if you want to subject me to some friendly torture -:).  Let us say that we will decide whether there is a centrifugal force (outward radial) by cutting the rope and observe which direction the swirling person is flung.  If he is flung in the radial direction, we will conclude that there is a centrifugal force that was balancing the tension in the rope.  On the other hand, if he is flung in the tangential direction, then we would conclude that there was no such centrifugal force and that the person was being kept from flying in the tangential direction by the tension in the rope.  Finally, assume that Subimal is observing the event from outside the rotating platfrom.

After running this experiment through one's mind, one can come to the following conclusion.  Jiten will see the person flung out in the radial direction and Subimal will see the person flung out in the tangential direction.  The two observations can be reconciled by noting that when the person moves a certain distance along the tangent, the platfrom and Jiten also move a certain distance in the circular direction, and Jiten, the rope and the person's direction of travel will be aligned and it will appear to be the outward radial direction.  So, Jiten will observe what may appear to be the effect of a centrifugal force on the rotating person while Subimal will see no such force.  The rotating person will feel an outward radial pressure while tied to the rope.  Once the rope is cut, this person will feel being flung out radially if he keeps looking at the center of the platform but tangentially if he looks outside the platform.  I hope this thought experiment further clarifies my earlier expalanation.

The magnitude of this force, whether centripetal or centrfugal, is mv**2/r and can be derived by doing simple vector algebra of velocity components at any point on the circle.  As to Subimal's point of Newton's laws not holding in non-inertial frames, you are right.  That is precisely why it is necessary to introduce the "pseudo force."

On the other hand, if Jiten was completely convinced by the explanation in my earlier post, please ignore the last three paragraphs of this post and we can move on.

Best wishes,

M. Harun uz Zaman

[ALOCHONA] Angry villagers force Chevron

Angry villagers force Chevron to stop gas field survey

Angry villagers on Wednesday forced the US company Chevron to stop seismic survey at Baligaon in Kamalganj upazila after some houses developed cracks following explosions carried out during the survey.
The villagers alleged that cracks had appeared on some houses after Chevron carried out two explosions as part of its 3D seismic survey on Moulvibazar gas field. The villagers protested at the move.
They said that they had come out in protest when Chevron carried out a second explosion and forced the workers to leave the place. The company, however, continued work in other parts of the gas fields.
The upazila nirbahi officer of Kamalganj, Hazera Khatun, told New Age that she had visited Baligaon village and found cracks on walls of houses.
She said that the villagers were demanding an assurance of compensations before any more explosions were carried out.
'Our houses shook and utensils jumped', said Rejina Begum and Jahirun Begum, two housewives of the village, about the impact of the detonation.
Gaffar Mia, a farmer, told New Age that many mud- and half-brick houses had developed cracks following the explosions.
The UNO said locals were worried as Chevron's seismic survey was causing damage to their houses.
Hazera said she had visited Noaganj, Madhabpur tea garden, Baligaon and Radhanagar and seen cracks on walls of several houses.
'I heard the sound of the explosion underground. If such explosions can damage houses, no one knows what they [Chevron] are doing in Lawacherra reserve forest.'
Hazera said that no Chevron people had contacted the local administration to inform them about the survey till Thursday after it started the work last month. 'Only today a Chevron official came to talk about what they are doing,' she said.
She said that she wanted an assurance in writing from the company that they would compensate the villagers for the damage.
When contacted, Chevron's director external affairs Nasher Ahmed told New Age that the company had heard about the cracks in some houses and was evaluating the situation.
'We are confident that we will be able to work it out with the local community,' he said adding that the company was using
methods which usually did not cause damages to houses and other structures.
He said that if it was determined that the damages had been caused by the operation of Chevron, the company would repair them.

[mukto-mona] INSIDE SHARIA COURT - 6

TIME

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1537516,00.html
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1537516,00.html

Last week, many Muslims in India, like their counterparts around the world,
gathered on the streets to burn effigies of the Pope and shout slogans
denouncing him for his remarks on Islam and
violence. Even before that fully died out, however, a new controversy
erupted â€" one that has turned Muslim ire against some of their own local
clerics.

India's "cash-for-fatwas" scandal broke out last weekend when a TV channel
broadcast a sting operation that showed several Indian Muslim clerics
allegedly taking, or demanding, bribes in return
for issuing fatwas, or religious edicts. The bribes, some of which were as
low as $60, were offered by undercover reporters wearing hidden cameras over
a period of six weeks. In return for the cash, the clerics appear to hand
out fatwas written in Urdu, the language used by many Muslims in Pakistan
and India, on subjects requested by the reporters. Among the decrees issued
by
the fatwas: that Muslims are not allowed to use credit cards, double beds,
or camera-equipped cell phones, and should not act in films, donate their
organs, or teach their children English. One cleric issued a fatwa against
watching TV; another issued a fatwa in support of watching TV.

Adding to the shock in India, home to the world's third-largest Muslim
population (approximately 150 million), is that some of the clerics
apparently caught in the sting operation teach at important institutions â€"
one belongs to India's most famous Islamic seminary, the Darul Uloom at
Deoband. At least two of the clerics have been suspended from their posts,
but that hasn't satisfied everyone. Students at one madrassa in north India
denounced the clerics, and in the city of Meerut, where a mufti, or cleric,
had been caught on camera, the congregation at one mosque refused to offer
prayers until he came before them, admitted to taking the money, and
apologized.

The "cash-for-fatwas" scandal has also led to a renewed debate on what
constitutes a fatwa, and who has legitimate authority to issue one. Fatwas
â€" like the one passed by Iran's Ayatullah Khomeini in 1989 against the
novelist Salman Rushdie, or those issued by Osama bin Laden in 1996 and 1998
against America â€" have come to epitomize the intolerance of Islamic
fundamentalists. Yet many Muslims argue that the purpose of fatwas has been
misunderstood: A fatwa is, technically
speaking, a ruling on a point of Islamic law made by a recognized Muslim
scholar in response to a question put to him. Since Osama bin Laden is no
Islamic scholar, many deny his right to issue a
fatwa. The sway that fatwas hold over Muslims is also not as great as many
outsiders think. Last year, a Muslim cleric issued a fatwa stating that it
was un-Islamic for Sania Mirza, India's
most famous tennis player and a Muslim, to wear sleeveless tops or short
skirts on court. Mirza simply dismissed the ruling; indeed, many, if not
most, urban Indian Muslims do not take fatwas seriously. However, in rural
communities, a well-respected mufti's fatwa â€" on issues ranging from
marriage to health to women's rights â€" can carry considerable influence.

India's Muslim leaders announced that they will soon create a new body that
will monitor the passing of fatwas in the country, in a bid to preserve that
influence, and nip the popular anger swirling around this scandal.

[mukto-mona] William Radice on Tagore :'Tagore balances the moral and the rational'

William Radice on Tagore

His 150th birth anniversary is three years away, but there is suddenly a
buzz about Rabindranath Tagore. New initiatives - an audio-visual
reinvention of Shesher Kavita and a musical on Kadambari Devi among other
events - have turned the spotlight on Tagore. William Radice, English poet
and translator of Tagore, speaks to Ratnottama Sengupta about the world's
abiding interest in the poet-philosopher:

What led you to Tagore?

I started learning Bengali and that led me to Tagore, not the other way
around. After a while I understood why Tagore is called Viswa Kavi. Being
a poet, I have other favourites in Bengali. But everytime I return to
Tagore, multiple layers of meaning emerge. That's what leads to the
multiple-voiced critical response to him.

Many have dismissed his greatness. Do you think he's overrated?

Many westerners were disillusioned with his self-translations; many
Indians with the Bengali obsession with Tagore. I've asked myself the
question, and am convinced that he's truly great. In some ways he's
greater than the Bengalis - including of Bangladesh - realise. Tagore and
greatness are easily linked due to his iconic status in Bengal and India;
his long life; his central role in the formation of modern Indian
nationhood; his noble appearance; his wide human sympathies; his profound
spiritual insight... But it's his poetry that forces me to place him among
the greatest writers of all times like Homer.

Isn't it his world view as a humanist and internationalist that is more
relevant today?

All of those things combine to impart a moral depth. There's a profound
awareness of suffering, of conflict in his poetry. At the same time
there's a transcendental spiritual connection with what lies beyond.

Tagore was a dualist who found spiritual reality in the khela (interplay)
of the human and divine. In one of his greatest songs he says, There's
sorrow, there's death, there's the fire of separation/ Yet peace, joy and
eternity are awake. Everything that defined him stemmed from that
awareness: his compassion, social activism, concern for environment,
rapport with women and children... And all of these things are so relevant
today.

Gandhi's stature has risen with the unrest in today's world. Will Tagore's
stock similarly rise in future?

I'm absolutely certain that he has more to offer. In the literary world
he'll have much greater credibility since, like Shakespeare, he constantly
surprises, disturbs, challenges those who attempt to understand him, for
he never supplied ready answers. He offers an extremely interesting
balance between the moral, the rational and the spiritual.

Please also watch a documentary on Tagore made by Satyajit initiated by
then Prme minister of India, Nehru: link is given below

RE: [ALOCHONA] True story of Grameen Bank and Yunus

Dear Alochoks!

I am appalled and dismayed by the reaction Ms. Majid has displayed in her fun recipe.  I am a fun loving expat who lived here in U.S. for almost three decades, but I don’t think its is a matter of joke when some unknown, fictitious character like Sunita Paul pokes insult, offense and spreads lies against the most notable dignitary in Bangladesh.  Dr. Yunus is a real Hero and he is our national pride  Your recipe is just another slap in the face of all Bangladeshi’s who are still trying make a sense out this infamous posting by this so called Sunita Paul.   I very suspicious of Ms. Majid herself, and I would not be surprised to learn that it was Ms. Majid who posted such nasty lies against Dr. Younus.  Her writings indicate she has a hidden agenda of acting as a contrarian (rather a villain!) to anything good happening in Bangladesh under the current administration.  She is stuck in the past among the Awami hooligans and Baksalites who do not want to see any real progress made by heroes like Dr. Yunus.  Your recipe is not only unpatriotic, it has a good deal of sarcasm and offense.

Let me tell you a real story about Dr. Yunus and how well he is respected amongst the top academics in the U.S.  I was attending a scholarly seminar at Clemson University on April 30, 2008 on Formative and Design Experiments, an emerging area of research in higher education.  The speakers were two distinguished professors; Dr. Thomas Reeves of University of Georgia and Dr. David Reinking of Clemson.  Dr. Thomas Reeves opened his speech with some of the best examples from around the world.  Guess, whose pictures and accomplishments was displayed at the seminar, it was all about Dr. Yunus, and how he has used design experiments in changing the lives of the rural poor in Bangladesh, especially the women.  Being the only Bangladeshi at the seminar I was ecstatic, humbled and honored to see one of us being honored by the top researchers in the U.S.

Ms. Majid, I hate to mention that you are envious of Dr. Yunus’ many accomplishments.  My advice, if you cannot say something good it would be wise to stay quite and all of us would respect that.  You have brought out the worst in you through your recipe of humiliation and I don’t believe too many Alochoks appreciate that.  This is what you call adding insult to injury and is completely uncalled for from an elite of your stature.

No offense intended!

Thanks\ you,

Nurul Hossain

Nobody should have any doubt about what “Sunita Paul” is. It is a savoury ‘dish’, a concoction. Try the following recipe in the comfort of your own kitchen to create your own "Sunita Paul, an expert in South Asian affairs."

1.  Pick some choice ‘upo-sompadokiyo’ from Jai Jai Din, Naya Diganta, Inquilab, Sangram, Dinkal, etc.

2.  Rinse well to rid of any grain of truth.  Left unnoticed, these grains may come between teeth and make chewing uncomfortable.

3.  Add spices. Make sure the mixture looks ‘holud’ as in ‘yellow journalism’.

4.   In a large pot over high flame of propaganda pour plenty of Moududibadi religion-flavored grease. Everything must be well-coated by this grease. When the grease is smoking in high heat throw in your ‘yellow’ mixture in the pot.

5.  Stir in dollops of the following if you fear the ‘upo-sampadokiyo’s are somewhat lacking in them:

                        a)  anti-India slurs

                        b)  anti-BAKSAL , which should include anti-AL slurs

                        c)  anti-leftist, secularist and progressive rantings

d)  the word “maya kanna” to describe sentiments FOR those killed and raped in 1971 muktijuddho

e)  denial of theWar of Liberation, and lastly

f)   mocking the demand for trial of the War Criminals of 1971

Choose a serving platter of good brand of crockery such as ‘dahuk’, notunbangladesh, or sonarbangladesh to serve the dish. The last one is highly recommended since it is the e-mail domain of Mr. S. A. Hannan.  There is also a new web magazine called Sonar Bangla that is commendable. For further help with the preparation and/or serving of the dish consult professionals like MBI Munshi, Isha Khan, and many other alochoks who would be only too pleased to help.

          Bon apetite!

         Farida Majid

This shows how incredibly stupid and ignorant some people could be. When Professor Yunus won the Nobel Prize for Peace, one of my most respected teachers at IBA, Dhaka University Professor Zahid Hussain (now working for World Bank, Dhaka) wrote an emotion choked piece in Daily Star mentioning that Professor Yunus was one of the best teachers he ever had in his life ! Zahid was a student of the Economics department in Chittagong University during the early '70s.

The entire piece written by this Sunita Paul is full of utter lies and concocted information. If one does not have the ability to read books on him, this is an excerpt of what Wikipedia has to say about Professor Yunus :

''The third oldest of nine children, Yunus was born in June 28, 1940 to a Muslim family in the village of Bathua, by the Boxirhat Road in Hathazari, Chittagong, then in British India (now in Bangladesh).[2][3] His father was Hazi Dula Mia Shoudagar, a jeweler, and his mother was Sofia Khatun. His early childhood years were spent in the village. In 1944, his family moved to the city of Chittagong, and he was shifted to Lamabazar Primary School from his village school.[2][4] By 1949, his mother was afflicted with psychological illness.[3] Later, he passed the matriculation examination from Chittagong Collegiate School securing the 16th position among 39,000 students in East Pakistan.[4] During his school years, he was an active Boy Scout, and traveled to West Pakistan and India in 1952, and to Canada in 1955 to attend Jamborees.[4] Later when Yunus was studying at Chittagong College, he became active in cultural activities and won awards for drama acting.[4] In 1957, he enrolled in the department of economics at Dhaka University and completed his BA in 1960 and MA in 1961.
Following his graduation, Yunus joined the Bureau of Economics as a research assistant to the economical researches of Professor Nurul Islam and Rehman Sobhan.[4] Later he was appointed as a lecturer in economics in Chittagong College in 1961.[4] During that time he also set up a profitable packaging factory on the side.[3] He was offered a Fulbright scholarship in 1965 to study in the United States. He obtained his Ph.D. in economics from Vanderbilt University in the United States through the graduate program in Economic Development in 1969.[5] From 1969 to 1972, Yunus was an assistant professor of Economics at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN.
During the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, Yunus founded a citizen's committee and ran the Bangladesh Information Center, with other Bangladeshis living in the United States, to raise support for liberation.[4] He also published the Bangladesh Newsletter from his home in Nashville. After the War, Yunus returned to Bangladesh and was appointed to the government's Planning Commission headed by Nurul Islam. He found the job boring and resigned to join Chittagong University as head of the Economics department.[6] He became involved with poverty reduction after observing the famine of 1974, and established a rural economic program as a research project. In 1975, he developed a Nabajug (New Era) Tebhaga Khamar (three share farm) which the government adopted as the Packaged Input Programme.[4]"

This is all crap and incredible.  Who is this weirdo?  Where did he/she/it get all this bogus information?  Does he not know that "you can fool some people all the time, you can fool all the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time".  If Prof Yunus was what this crap guy says, then his game would have been revealed long time ago.  BTW, everyone knows that Prof Yunus WAs professor at Chittagong University at the start of his career.

Garbage is all I can say for this article.

Isha Khan <bd_mailer@yahoo. com> wrote:

True story of Grameen Bank and Yunus

Sunita Paul

Professor Muhammad Yunus, after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize came into focal point of global media and now he is pretending to be the neo 'Mother Teresa' of today's world. But, most of the world citizen shall never know the real stories of this man's crockery and how he is continuing to swindle poor people's money for decades.

I had no taste of writing on this bad guy even two days back. But, when I listened to a report in Voice of America on May 1, had to set my fingers on computer key board to investigate and write about the unknown stories of Mohammed Yunus.

Yunus continues to claim himself as a 'Professor'. But, according to several academics in Bangladesh, this man never taught in any of the college or universities in Bangladesh. Who gave him this title remains a mystery unfold.

Grameen Bank, although won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, it is well documented fact that, in reality, this organization is a Shylock of modern days. Poor people are lured in borrowing money from this institution while, various severe methods of pressure and social humiliations are applied on the borrowers in extracting interest and the capital amount. Although Yunus claims to give money to poor without interest, it is again well documented that Grameen Bank's rate of interest ranges between 18-30 per cent. Many poor borrowers committed suicide when they failed to repay the interest or loan money. At least two dozen cases are in document where husbands had to sell their wives to brothels for collecting the money to repay the loan and interest to Grameen Bank. Few hundred cases are in document where Grameen Bank people took away tin made houses of poor borrowers as they failed to pay the interest.

Yunus claims that he provided mobile phones to poor women in the villages. Yes, he established a cell phone company named Grameen Phone under joint venture ship with Nortel (Norway). Initially people were forced to pay TK. 7 per minute for all out going calls. Yunus run virtual monopoly business by extracting such high charges from the people of Bangladesh. In villages too, his company charged heavy rates from the poor women. But, when a number of private companies like Banglalink, Aktel, Citicell and Warid came in business, now Grameen Phone has to also reduce the rate to only TK. 0.25 per minute to cope with the competition. Now imagine, before entering competition, this company took 25 times more charges from the people

Grameen's textile project is named Grameen Check. This enterprise is also cashing huge profit by exporting products abroad taking the sympathy of buyers being product from poor people in Bangladesh. But, in reality, 90 per cent of profit accrued from the export of such products directly goes to Mohammed Yunus' pocket while the poor people are only provided the actual production cost and 2-3 percent profit.

Grameen claims to have established a Yogurt producing plant in Bangladesh for nourishing poor children. Yunus should at least have some degree of shame! This company although producing yogurt are selling products at a very high price, which is much beyond the buying capacity of poor classes in Bangladesh. And what about Grameen's project of producing drinking water under joint venture ship with French water company Veolia "to provide clean drinking water for the poor in Bangladesh"? Veolia products shall be in Bangladeshi market for making profit and none of the poor people will ever have the ability of buying this brand at the high price the company would offer.

In fact, Muhammed Yunus is not running any charitable project in Bangladesh. He is continuing to befool international community by pretending to be a savior of poor. In reality, he is a Shylock and a man who knows how to become rich by extracting money from the poor.

Now, let me focus on another important issue. Grameen Bank and most of the enterprises under the same conglomerate are solely controlled by Muhammed Yunus. His own brother Mohammed Jahangir is the chief of conglomerate' s media department, who controls Bangladeshi media in exchange of multi-million Taka advertisements. Any newspaper reporting the truth of Grameen Bank's virtually robbery of poor people's money will lose advertisements from this influential group.

Bangladeshi intelligence agencies surely have various record of mockery of Muhammed Yunus. Many of the journalists are even aware of such facts. But, due to high influence of Muhammed Yunus and due to 'advertisement weapon' in his hand, media in Bangladesh shall never publish any such stories.

True investigative journalists in the world, especially with influential Medias like Newsweek, TIME, Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, Economist, Financial Times, Far Eastern Economic Review, Herald Tribune, SUN, Mirror, Berliner Zeitung, CNN, Fox, CNBC, BBC, VOA, Al Jazeera or even Indian newspapers like Hindustan Times, The Statesman, Times of India etc., need to investigate the true stories of Muhammed Yunus and expose his nasty face to the international community. A master swindler like Yunus should not be anymore allowed to continue his fraudulent activities under the garb of social worker. But, anyone, willing to know the real stories of Yunus or Grameen Bank or this conglomerate should note that any investigation in this regard should go without notifying the Grameen bosses in Dhaka. Because, once they will sense such investigations, they will instruct their agents in the country to shut the mouths of poor people under threats.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Hasina says harassers will bow to her someday

Hasina made numerous untimely, inappropriate, irresponsible, and unwise comments before.  Oftentimes her party is the one that suffered the most for her comments, and Khaleda and her party directly and unexpectedly benefit from it, e.g., the election loss of 1991.  But calling her the worst, when we not long ago witnessed the worst form of corruption and nepotism in Bangladesh's history under recent BNP-Jamaat govt, is grossly biased and partisan remark.  I also don't know who fights for the people in Bangladesh according to pseudonym alochok worldbznews' standard.

In this topic before we quickly jump on the bandwagon, here is another side of the story:
