[mukto-mona] Political Terror in West Bengal

http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=14674022

Six killed in WB rural poll violence
By a Sify Correspondent
Thursday, 15 May , 2008, 00:03

Kolkata: A wave of violence unleashed by the ruling
CPI-M in West Bengal claimed at least six lives and
injured scores on Wednesday during the panchayat
elections with three dead belonging to the RSP- its
junior partner in the government.

The wife of a candidate was among the three dead at
Basanti in South 24 Parganas district, officials said,
while five died statewide.

Police officials said three people, including a woman,
died in the shooting and many injured by alleged CPI-M
men who also set on fire several thatched houses to
terrorise the voters. "We have reports of three death
in Basanti. One of them is a woman," West Bengal
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj
Kanojia said.

West Bengal Public Works Department (PWD) minister
Kshiti Goswami said the dead belonged to his party,
the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and the
assailants were his government's major constituent
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-) supporters.

A CPI(M) supporter was also killed in a separate poll
related violence in the same Basanti area. In another
incident at Domjur in Howrah district a youth was
killed when the bomb he was carrying went off, Kanojia
said.

As incidents of violence were reported from few other
areas, a two-month-old child died at Panchla in Howrah
district after bombs were hurled near a polling
station where his mother was standing in a queue. The
child reportedly fell down from the lap of her mother
and was trampled by other people — all running for
cover.

The second of the three-phased panchayat (local bodies
to rule the villages) polls, crucial for the ruling
Left Front led by the pro-industry Chief Minister
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to gauge its eroding rural
support base, began on a violent note on Wednesday.

TV footage by a local Kolkata TV channel showed
bullet-ridden bodies of men and women lying at Talda
village in Basanti of South 24 Parganas district,
about 75 km from Kolkata.

Rampada Haldar, an RSP candidate, was in a critical
condition while his wife Laxmi Haldar was shot dead,
officials said.

Wails of village women rented the air as RSP, a
disgruntled partner of the Left Front which is at
loggerheads with main constituent CPI-M over the
takeover of farmlands for industry, claimed that CPI-M
was out to grab rural seats by force.

Meanwhile, reports of clashes and bombings between the
CPI-M and its rival Trinamool Congress led by the
feisty Mamata Banerjee also poured from other areas.

Police said two persons, including the child, were
killed when CPI-M and Trinamool Congress workers
hurled crude bombs at each other in Panchla area of
Howrah near Kolkata.

Polling in Singur, the scene of unrest over farmland
takeover for world's cheapest car Nano to be
manufactured by Tata Motors, was peaceful.

The third round of polling will take place on May 18,
while counting will be on May 21.

Nizami alleged that the government had made a move to destroy "political leadership" in the country in the name of depoliticising.

The Jamaat ameer faulted chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed on his speech to the nation.

He alleged that Fakhruddin had stepped beyond his jurisdiction and pushed dialogue into uncertainty.

Nizami demanded the release of former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina in rare calls.

[ALOCHONA] Political parties urged to exercise pure democracy

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday called on major political parties to exercise pure democracy within the parties.

No major political parties exercise democracy. Democracy cannot be established through pressure or with mighty hands, they added.

Political party leaders said failure of the political parties is one of the reasons behind 1/11 scenario. At the same time, bureaucrats, professional bodies and businessmen are also responsible for it.

Titled 'Exercise of democracy inside political parties', the roundtable was organised by The Editors, an online-based newspaper and news service at the Cirdap auditorium.

Presided by Selim Omrao Khan, the meeting was addressed by Awami League presidium member Abdur Razzak, Jatiya Samajtantrick Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haque Inu and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim.

Awami League (AL) leader Prof Abu Sayeed presented a concept paper.

Abdur Razzak said democratic exercise would not exist in the country if pure democracy is not practised.

"Failure of the political parties is not the only reason behind 1/11 scenario, but bureaucrats, civil administration, businessmen and professional bodies are also responsible," veteran AL leader said.

"Pure democracy is imperative to run the country, but exercise of democracy is not possible when it is imposed," he added.

Hasanul Haque Inu stressed the need for practising democracy inside a political party. It is not a good sign when the military government tries to form political parties, he added.

Mujahidul Islam Selim said we do not want to return to pre-1/11 situation, but post-1/11 scenario is also not desirable to us.

CPB general secretary also said democracy would not be powerful unless political parties become powerful.

BNP Joint-Secretary General Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Workers' Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Bimal Biswas, Jatiya Party presidium member GM Quader, Editor of the Amader Shomoy Naimul Islam Khan, noted lawyer Dr Shahdin Malik and Karmojibi Nari President Shirin Akhter also spoke.

[mukto-mona] News No. 83/2008/Latest from Sajek: merchandise seized

Latest from Sajek: merchandise seized

chtnews.com
News No. 83/2008, May 13, 2008

The settlers in Sajek appear to have put an economic embargo on Jumma populated areas, with merchandise for village shops of two Jummas seized at Baghaihat bazaar.

Sources said, on 11 May, two elderly Jummas in their sixties, Leipeda Chakma and Gyana Ranjan Chakma, were ferrying goods from Karengatoli bazaar to their shops at Gangaram Mukh. When they reached Baghaihat, a settler named Nazimuddin seized the goods, apparently on orders of the army officers.

As the Jummas protested at the illegal seizure, Nazimuddin asked them to contact the zone commander, Lt. Col. Sajid Imtiaz, the mastermind behind the 20 April attack on 4 Jumma villages in Sajek.

Attempt at capture or effacement of evidence?
Since 10 May, settlers have been cleaning the ashes and charred beams of the burned houses of the Jummas. "They are doing it on orders of the army and it is not clear if it is an attempt to capture our land or to efface the telltale mark of the brutal attack or a purely generous help" said one villager, who spoke to chtnews.com from Sajek on special arrangement.

[mukto-mona] Cultural 'semi-fascism'

CPI(M)'s use of term, 'semi-fascist terror' in West Bengal was accepted by the non-CPI Left, but the formulation was puerile. How could the external policy of a government be progress in that case.

Moreover, semi-fascism cannot be a theoretical category. Still to pay back in the coin of CPI(M) and those Left-endorsets, I use the world, 'cultural semi-fascism'

They insist your show must be cancelled! - cultural coercion in a post-Nandigram Bengal (http://sanhati.com/articles/780/)
By Tapas Sinha. Translated by Suvarup Saha, Sanhati

The phonecall came on the 10th of April. One of the organizers of the Champdanga Theatre Festival was on the line. On the receiving end was thespian Koushik Sen, who has been active in the civil society movement of Nandigram.
"We will not be able to host your play. There's pressure from the party. Look, I am also an activist of the party. But there are others here and some of them are very rough. And they insist that we should not allow you to perform here."
This invited performance of Bonkubabu-r Bondhu – a Swapno-Sondhani production - was supposed to be held in Champdanga on 17th April. Incredibly, even a Satyajit Ray short story smacks of politics and treason these days. Advance payment for the show had been made by the festival committee on 7th April. This is not an exception; the number of invited performances of 'Swapno-Sondhani' in and around Kolkata has declined drastically in recent months.
Let's go back to 10th December, 2006. The theatre group 'Pancham Baidik' organized a protest meeting against Singur atrocities, outside the Academy of Fine Arts. An open Letter was sent to the chief minister demanding concrete information on the issue. It was signed by many citizens. On 24th December 'Pancham Baidik' was supposed to perform at a theatre festival in Bansberia, near Kolkata. But one of the organizers asked director Arpita Ghosh to replace their production Poshu Khamar (a Bengali adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm) with 'something else'.
The cause of the request was some 'external pressure'.
Since the director declined to acquiesce, Poshu Khamar was cancelled on 20th December. One of the organizing committee members complained that a theatre group has no business in getting into all this 'protest stuff'. Arpita had demanded for a written reason of cancellation of the show. The organizers never got back to her.
On 21st December, 2006 there was an invited performance of Poshu Khamar. After the first half was done, one of the organizers rushed to the green room and blurted that it was a 'very dangerous drama' and 'there can be law and order problems anytime'. After the Nandigram incidents, one officer in charge of a government theatre house asked Arpita Ghosh if their production had any references to Singur-Nandigram.
November 2007. Just after the successful 'Nandigram Recapture', theatre person Debshankar Halder received a call from a Bakreshwar based theatre festival committee. They wanted to know if their production Furut had any political message or reference. Debshankar retorted that it was an Upendrakishore Roychoudhury story, the question of contemporary politics here was ridiculous. After a few days, another call. "Please tell us if there's Singur-Nandigram in the play. Rumors are flying here and there may be trouble… ". Debshankar tells us that the queries were made with complete decency and humility.
'Belghoria Ethic', in association with a century-old library hall, had been producing plays for the last 6 years. Last year, after the 14th March 2007 massacre at Nandigram, Ethic was instrumental in consolidating the indignant voices into a 'Anti-Genocide Citizens Forum'.
They arranged a convention in Belghoria on this issue. They even produced a play in protest called 'Pokay Kaata E Duhsamay' (This Moth-Eaten Time). Within a few days, the Library authority informed Ethic in writing that all the associated theatre groups needed to discuss their productions first with them. They also wanted written word from Ethic that they would indulge in no further 'political activity'. Ethic was not prepared to budge. This ended the long-standing relationship of five and a half years. Presently Ethic is renting the same library hall to stage their plays. With a difference.
The rent is almost as astronomical as a premier Kolkata hall like the 'Shishir Mancha'.
Ethic used to arrange its rehearsal sessions in a local school in Belghoria. They were soon informed that the group was henceforth unwelcome. They were advised not to oppose the party. After their recent play Sthanakan, about the contemporary issues, was staged, 'well-wishers' of the members of the group visited their respective homes and advised them to part ties with the group. Debashish Sengupta of Ethic says that even their regular audience is being 'advised' to stay away from their shows.
Let us now look at what theatre personality Bratya Basu has to say. One organizer of a theatre group, in which Bratya also acts, requested him not to speak outside about Singur-Nandigram for sometime. All that the poor fellow wanted was not to lose call-shows! But this was nothing new. In fact in 2003, Bratya's Winkle-Twinkle (a satire on the present state of affairs of the West Bengal CPIM) was barred from being staged at the last moment at Ashoknagar. Even now, Bratya's Krishnagahvar (Black Hole) is not getting show requests.
Anirban Bhattacharya of the group Drishyapat has a different tale to tell. An actor playing the central protagonist of their play was a Naxalite at one time. Anirban was summoned by a governmental department a number of times to explain the screenplay of this production. And finally he was asked to change quite a few places of the script. Anirban, who was once an SFI activist, declined to budge. In the last one year Drishyapat never got an invitation to perform.
Last year, around April, Kasba Arghya was requested to stage their production Pandabanee from the drama department of a Kolakata-based University. The play was stopped in the middle under the pretext of a time crunch. Just a month before, the group was actively involved in protesting the Nandigram massacres and the creation of a cultural – intellectual solidarity group. Arghya's Manish Mitra informed us that from last November till January, they hardly got three call shows. The show requests have gone down drastically.
Debesh Chattapadhyay of 'Sansriti' informed us that they are hardly getting any government run theatre halls for staging their productions. In the last three years they never managed a booking of Rabindrasadan, the premier theatre hall in Kolkata. They had captured the Aamlashol deaths in their production 'Cadavarous'. The last show of 'Fyatadu' at Rabindra Sadan was way back in 2004. Now they are staging 'Fandigram'. Till now, there has been only two shows of this drama being staged. An old activist of the DYFI, Debesh is pretty sure that they cannot continue to perform 'Fandigram' for long. They are seeing a real dip in number of invited shows in recent months.
Vocal protests against Singur-Nandigram incidents, resignation from the 'Natya Academy' has put Bibhas Chakraborty in a precarious situation. The number of 'call-shows' are dwindling. To quote Bibhas "..We are pretty certain now that we will not be getting any more show requests outside Kolkata. So, all our performances will be limited to Kolkata. If anyone dares to call us, they themselves will land in trouble…''.

The theatre-festival committees, who for long have been patronizing these theatre groups, are backing out. Whatever financial difficulties that the groups incur when they stage a new production are somewhat compensated by the invitational performances. But this is no longer a viable mode of operation for some 'marked' groups. A few theatre persons are being targeted. Theatre personality Suman Mukhopadhyay terms all this as 'old tactics'. Screening of his film 'Herbert' was stopped at Nandan in similar fashion.
Yes, the tactics are really old. A renewed version of the British 'Drama Regulator Act' was once invoked by the first chief minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Ray. Copies of 59 plays produced by the 'Indian Peoples Theatre Association' were scrutinized by the government. Bidhan Ray detailed this list on 10th November 1953 in response to a question asked by Jyoti Basu, Monikuntala Sen, Monoranjan Hazra.
Goons who used to terrorize people by bombing theatre halls where Utpal Dutta enacted 'Duswapner Nagari' (City of Nightmares) would probably have been put to shame by the present form of cutural terrorism.

[mukto-mona] Re: Fwd: President Apostate?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48206

Why won't the DNC face reality and admit that Obama is unelectable
and that Hillary is the stronger choice?
Thanks to the GOP machine he has had early wins in deep red states.
Deep red states like Utah that will never vote for him in a general
election. Does anyone seriously think he will win in states like
Utah where he is now down to McCain by 40 points?

What's more is that he is just not going to pick-up the working
class white voters in key states like FL, Penn, Ohio, and IN, just
to name a few. If he's nominated, these voters will either sit out
the election, or worse, defect to the McCain camp.

I seriously think there are some GOP moles in the DNC delegate
group. Out there trying to assure an Obama nomination.....trying to
assure a McCain win in the general election.

The latest national poll shows Obama leading McCain 46 to 40. Given
the 'black factor', this means that Obama would LOSE to McCain by at
least 4 points in the general election if it was held today. This
will only get worse once he's the only target for the GOP.

[mukto-mona] Ref: Science and Religion: Reality vs. Emotion! My combined responses to TJ Khan and Mr. Avijit Roy.

Dear Moderator: TJ Khan's comment is self explanatory; unwarranted hostile behavior that needs to be addressed appropriately.  I hope and request you to consider posting the following in MM Forum. Thanks. Mohammad Gani, CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, USA.
******************************************************************************
Ref: Science and Religion: Reality vs. Emotion! My combined responses to TJ Khan and Mr. Avijit Roy.
Mohammad Gani (USA).

To Mr. TJ Khan;

Professor TJ Khan; I am pretty much disappointed with the F- grade in my English course with you and if I would have known your exceptional academic brilliance in English literature, you are all round (around) squarely super genius and also that you are so conservative in awarding grades, I would then have begged for a "W" grade instead and run away real fast from you without a diiiiiiiploma.

Now sir, what exactly prompted you vituperating me fecklessly at personal level with your upscale roguery diatribes? Is there any good reason behind this stupefying and recalcitrant behavior? Is it only my English as second language proficiency (deficiency) that fomented all these loose-tempered anguishes? That's all????? Is it the true teaching of your (corrupted) wisdom? Do you know how much uncivilized and obstinate you have been without any provocation? Listen Professor; have some lessons from Mr. Avijit Roy's response to me and see the difference; will you?

Sir, why "Cambridge, Massachusetts" has caused your stomachache so badly? Welcome to Cambridge sir! Why have you targeted me at the personal level with all out "new-clear" garbage? Do you live in Cambridge too; I mean teach English in Harvard/MIT? If so, I would love to welcome you in my residence at 157 Pearl Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 for some ENGLISH delicacies. Sir, I have been living in Cambridge for last 26+ years. Please come clean about it with what exactly had in your roasted brain. Please do not ignore this request.

I see Mr.T J Khan, I look through your fierce, stony and ugly red face, I also see your hugely big mouth  and a long tongue like of a braking dog; starting from entrance to the exit of the Lincoln tunnel. What kind of Khan (Kahn?) you are sir, an original Pakistani one or amalgamated "Bangla Khan" (Like Bangla Kodhu, Bangla Kochu)? You must be an undocumented grandson or son of Tagore by wedlock; no wonder you are so obsessed with fatal attraction to him.

Who did tell you that you have no right to be critical on my opinion or of anyone else? Did I ever say that to you? Do I have the same right too? Have you ever, anywhere been critical on my OPINIONS at all, really?  Read your own scurvy intellectual garbage over and over again and check with your intellect of higher elevation or ask another close and crook friend to see if there was any constructive criticism on my opinions or were simply ranting me personally.

If you considered all these nothing but trash; why have you been as selective in picking on "The Quran only" as your target of opportunity? Didn't I mention few other religions too? Shouldn't you either leave all these alone or if had guts, should come up point by point with your ultra-superior logics to the readers?

Aren't you exactly on the top of the list of those suckers born every minute? How could you possibly call the readers suckers those have also the same rights those you have? How could you comprehend and consume the professional and erudite response of Mr. Avijit Roy either? Any comment sir?

I see your word dancing in coining sentences and that also could be of some helpful training for me too. You are a winner in English (with President Sword or Knight) and I do not challenge it! I am only a neophyte intern in English and have no problem in learning from you or others? Does it make you happy now, sir?

Listen brother, I mean step brother; before flipping your lips and delivering tawdry lectures in a public domain, check the following first; (1) If you have "a" wife ( I doubt, should have left long time ago) and you confronted her with this boiling temper, please do not immediately go to your PC. Take a deep breath, have some COOL-AID and lamb chop with 2 Advil tablets (250mg) and then take a nap before lecturing in a public domain. If you are a vegetarian, then fill up your tank with "ANIMAL" crackers. (2) Never deliver lecture with toothache; better go to a dentist first. (3) If you are intoxicated or UI (under influence) please take the following several hours off from lecturing garbage (4) and finally, as you are a sick and insane person; please see a specialist to feel your roasted brain. All these could help in bringing your veiled and wild symptoms under control.

Oh, I almost forgot! I have checked with the archives of  prestigious Times, Newsweek, The Guardian, The Bangladesh Observer, The Daily Star and few others to discover your prolific creations and I found NONE,  probably all these stupid had deleted your precious gems except few in Mukto-Mona which are 2000 years old (I mean 2 years old). Those were also erratic in nature and with your habitual volcanic eruption on Mr. Jahed Ahmed, Setara Hashem and few others with no substantive merit. What do have to show the readers those make you so proud of sir?

Finally, that's all (for now)! Please let me know how these taste. I am cooking some extra-hot and shall deliver upon your order sir. Good luck and enjoy!

Mohammad Gani

                               ***************

To Mr. Avijit Roy.

Thank you for your noble mind and enlightening information. I read these with deep interest and shall indeed go through the rest over time. As you have rightfully mentioned, I was trying to combine philosophy of science and religion together and I still believe that these 2 could easily co-exist. I find some of your references inchoate, especially "something" from "nothing"; those concepts are still only theories like vulnerable fates of Drake equation and String theories. You indeed have noticed that I have no confrontation with science except with "some" poetic Astrophysics. As Mr. Stephen Hawking said in the 1st page of his "A brief history of time", "How much more do I exactly know than this old lady who still believes that the earth is supported by a big tortoise?" I believe in limitation of human brain and science's intervention to infinite universe, moving fast to infinite time and space. These are not precisely defined in science realm yet.

I also believe that religions have long established institution, family value and morality; important ingredients of human civilization toward humanity. The truth of religion is relative matter and not an absolute one and obviously religions are consistent in their projection of a dimension of the wonderful and mystical. Despite growing secularism of our time, religions remain an almost universal attribute of our family value, our culture and social life. Religions have long been the subjects of scholarly speculation and scientific investigation, for it most tantalizes exactly those people who do not subscribe them. Religious studies led many scholars to postulate a "Will to believe" which is not much of an explanation of why people believe. There is no doubt that religions try to explain much, but no religion tries to explain everything. That led me to conclude; questions that religious philosophy cannot answer about the nature of existence and the origin of God; just as there are many questions that scientists cannot answer about the nature and origins of physical laws. Clearly some do better then others but only the ignorant would dismiss the probability of God and His divinity just based on only theories of science.

Nevertheless, I must applaud your sincere attention and illustration on my opinions. I hope, distinguished MM readers shall now make up their own dispositions freely. I recognize the integrity and any sentiment on "subjects of interest" by any contributor except unprovoked personal attack like TJ Kahn did to me.

Also, I must appreciate your posting consideration (of my write up) in MM Forum even after (recent) short but rancorous feud; unless it is of any kindness to me. Moderators/editors have their absolute rights to decline posting but you indeed have crossed over revenge taking mentality, bridging coherent relationship with overall contributors. I have no bone of contention about that. Yes, once I thought of not sending any essay to MM but then immediately changed mind with my own conventional wisdom. I thought, running away with poisons could further corrupt my mind against MM. I did not think of winning or losing at this point.

I fully agree with your impression on religious forums but as MM is not one of them and   thus can not do what others do or practice. I was chased out several occasions for being critical on "Jamat" in Bangladesh politics, enemy number 1 of our freedom…….. as well as was branded as  Razakar by few in MM. I repudiate all form of militancy and do not accept fanaticism in any religion or political group. I strongly believe that these sentiments are obstacle to the progression of human civilization and to human rights. However, I should complain against selectively targeting only particular religion or group as scapegoat and letting others go free.

I also have blurry vision on MM's humanity approach and internationalism. I find it conflicting to patriotism that supports nationalism and thus democracy. I am having difficulty to locate democracy in internationalism that is backed by humanity. Does internationalism support patriotism and nationalism?  I mean, how could we divide the entire and universal humanity into many pieces and then call each piece a state/nation, then have love for "my one" and become a patriot for claiming/establishing democracy there! Does it make any sense to you? Internationalism/humanity does not promote patriotism, does it? Please write about it, if you have moments.

Mr. Roy, thank you again. At this moment, I have to exit; Mr. TJ Khan could knock my door any moment for more spicy "English dishes" and see, I could find more recipes for him.

Regards.

Mohammad Gani

RE: [ALOCHONA] Hi so called nari netri Ayesak Khusi q, Maleka n .. again you dont say anything against Dr Kamal DU for abouse of female students what lies behind it?

Dear Alochocks!

As a parent of a college going female I am deeply disturbed about the situation and concerned about the education ecology that Dhaka University provides to its female students. It is uncommon but not unusal that a female students get involved with university professors. However, if a teacher violates the boundary between him/her and the student, he/she should not be teaching. If there is enough evidence of sexual misconduct/abuse then the scoundrel (Dr. Kamal) should be fired immediately and charged with rape. Any forced violation of a female student or non-student tantamounts to rape. Dr. Kamal should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I am not sure if the CTG has enough teeth to bring him to justice since he is also related to BAL.

Anyway, Dr. Kamal should not be above the law.

Dear all.
Dr kamal teacher of DU abused his female students. He belongs to pro BAL Blue Panel .
Female students and their parents presented written allegation to authority.
But some organizations works for women folk raised no voice against the abuse of female student of DU.
Mohila porisad. kormijibi nari , nari pokho n other some organizations some times seen engage in false propaganda against various org or persons.
But in resent time they apparently favor the persons and organizations liable for torture on women ( look at jogonnath university incident).

[ALOCHONA] Re: [khabor.com] Nizami says arrest looms

Millitary and superpowers backed so called CTG will not only smash our main politcal parties', they will do every possible deals and acts to sell out our nation.

They are doing merely out of their scope, these are not the things they supposed to do rather just get out after conducting a free and fair election within prescribed time frame by BD Constitution.

Nizami says arrest looms

Wed, May 14th, 2008 7:33 pm BdST

Photo: bdnews24.com

Dhaka, May 14 (bdnews24.com) – Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami said Wednesday that a move was underway to arrest him.

"I know the move is on to arrest me. But I am not worried about it at all. I have faith in Allah. There are people to look into the matter," Nizami told reporters at the party headquarters in Moghbazar, a day after the Anticorruption Commission pressed charges against him and others in the GATCO scam case.

"I was never involved in crime or corruption so that I should feel psychologically shaken."

"I have been implicated in false cases before," he added.

The Anticorruption Commission pressed charges against 25 people including former prime minister Khaleda Zia, her son Arafat Rahman Coco and Nizami.

Investigation officer of the GATCO scam case, Zahirul Huda, told bdnews24.com that 12 accused in the case were shown fugitives. Nizami and former ministers M Saifur Rahman, Mannan Bhuiyan, M Shamsul Islam, MK Anwar and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury were among them.

Nizami Wednesday demanded withdrawal of all false cases including the GATCO and Barapukuria ones immediately.

Nizami demanded the release of former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina in a rare gesture and said that there was no reason trial of the cases against them could be hampered if they were on bail."

"There is no alternative to the release of the two leaders for an election acceptable to all," Nizami said.

"An independent and sovereign Bangladesh is the result of democratic movement. People of this country were always respectful to democracy. They had never accepted any attack on democracy," he added.

Nizami Wednesday alleged that the government had made a move to destroy "political leadership" in the country in the name of depoliticising.

He demanded that the election be held by October and the electoral roll be finalised by June 30.

The demands also include freedom of all arrested on political grounds.

The Jamaat ameer faulted chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed's speech to the nation.

He alleged that Fakhruddin had stepped beyond his jurisdiction and pushed dialogue into uncertainty.

"The Election Commission is tasked with preparing a flawless voter list and holding a free, fair and peaceful election. But the EC troubled its main task by intervening in some other tasks beyond its jurisdiction," Nizami said.

The Jamaat leader said: "A move to turn the country into a 'vassal state' was on."

Nizami said that Bangladesh had fallen victim to a deep-rooted conspiracy by the "imperialist and regional influential forces" that could not stand Bangladesh's successes in the past 15 years of democratic rule.

According to the constitution, such a government could not take any decision on policy matters, but this government had been doing it, he added.

[mukto-mona] Re: Science and Religion: Reality vs. Emotion!

Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete?
Article 1: Necessarily, it does - speaks a physicist

Well, otherwise we must invent a science-friendly, science-compatible fiction of Allah/God. First, try the pantheon of available fictional creators. Inspect thoroughly. If none fits the bill, invent a new one. The Allah/God of your choice must be a stickler for the so-called divine principles laid down by the priests-the classical inventors of Allah/God over the centuries. Science does not take kindly to the so-called deity who, ignorants suppose, if piqued or euphoric, sets aside seismological or cosmological principles and in wild dreams of many, can causes the moon to shiver, the earth to split asunder, or, as to some stupids, such a deity may even cause the universe to suddenly reverse its expansion. This fictional Allah/God must, among other things, be stoically indifferent to supplications for changing local meteorological conditions, the task already being naturally performed by the discipline of fluid dynamics. Therefore, religious peoples, even if they pray
earnestly with their buutocks elevated in the air, dance with great energy around totem poles, shall not cause even a drop of rain to fall on parched soil. This newly invented, rule-abiding and science respecting Allah/God/Bhagwan equally well dispenses with tearful Christians singing the Book of Job, pious Hindus feverishly reciting the havan yajna, or earnest Muslims performing the « special rain prayers » in hot dry deserts as they face the former abide of idols, the so-called holy Ka'aba.
The fact is that the equations of fluid flow, not the number of earnest supplicants or quality of their prayers, determine weather outcomes. This is grossly irreligious otherwise one could imagine joining the faithful of all religions in a huge simultaneous but vain global prayer that stupids feel would wipe away the pernicious effects of anthropogenic global climate change. Your chosen Allah/God cannot entertain private petitions for good health and longevity, prevent an air crash, or send woe upon demand to the enemy. Mindful of microbiology and physiology, She/He cannot cure leprosy by dipping the afflicted in rivers or have humans remain in unscathed condition after being devoured by a huge fish. Faster-than-light travel is also out of the question, even for the so-called prophets and special messengers. Instead, She/He must stay as the fictional and nominal runner of the world according to the laws and unto the letter, closely following the flow of Nature. A
scientific fictional Creator should certainly know an awful lot of science which the formerly invented medieval allah/God did't need. To differentiate between the countless universes discovered by superstring theory is a headache. Fine-tuning chemistry to generate complex proteins, and then initiating a cascade of mutations that turn microbe to man, is also no trivial matter. But bear in mind that there are definite limits to knowledge, whether by man of any fictional creator: the fictional Allah/God can supposedly know only the limited, the knowable. Omniscience and science do not go well with each other. The difficulty with omniscience—even with regard to a particle as humble as the electron— has been recognized as an issue since the 1920s. Subatomic particles show a vexing, subtle elusiveness that defeats even the most sophisticated effort to measure certain of their properties even when tried by a fictional Allah/God. Unpredictability is intrinsic to quantum mechanics,
the branch of physics which all particles are empirically seen to show. This discovery so disturbed Albert Einstein that he rejected quantum mechanics, pronouncing that the fictional Allah/God could not "play dice with the universe." But it turned out that Einstein's objections were flawed—uncertainty is deeply fundamental. Thus, any science-abiding fictional deity we invent will be incompletely informed on many aspects of nature. Is one being excessively audacious, perhaps impertinent, in setting down terms of reference for a fictional divine and non-existant entity? Really ! Humans have always invented their objects of worship. Smarter humans go for smarter fictional versions of Allah/God. Anthropomorphic representations—such as a Allah/God with octopus arms—are a bit out of fashion today but were enormously popular just a few centuries ago. As well, some people might object to binding fictional Allah/God and the real human to the same rules of logic, or perhaps even
sharing the same space-time manifold. But if we drop this essential demand then little shall remain. Reason and evidence would lose meaning and be replaced by fiction, tradition, and the delusion of revelation. It would then be wrong for us to have 2 + 2 = 5, but okay for inventing the fiction of an Allah/God. Centuries of human progress would come to naught.

Let's face it: the day of the mythical Sky God is long gone. In the Age of Science, religion has been re-invented, and the medieval Allah/God of classical religions has lost repute and territory. Today people pay lip service to trusting that rusty Allah/God but they still swallow medicines when sick. Muslim-run airlines start a plane journey with prayers but ask passengers to buckle-up anyway, and most suspect that people who are falsely rumoured to rise miraculously from the dead were probably not quite dead to begin with. These days if you hear a voice telling you to sacrifice your only son, you would probably report it to the authorities instead of taking the poor lad up a mountain, and if you really took your son to an alter for sacrifice, the state will sure put you in a mental asylum, irrespective of whether you call yourself the prophet Abrahim or somebody else. As you can well imagine, the old trust is disappearing.

Nevertheless, there remains the tantalizing fiction of a divine power somewhere "out there" who is blamed to run a mysterious, but scrupulously and rather stupidly, a miracle-free universe. In this universe, the fictional Allah/God may be dishonestly ascribed to act in ingenious ways that seem miraculous. Yet these fictional and "never-actually-verified-miracles" do violate physical laws and seem ridiculous. Ordinary and naturally, no supernatural interventions in the physical world could permit quantum tunneling through cosmic holes. It would be perfectly unfair for a scientific mind to invent a fictional Allah/God to explain the nonlinear dynamics to explain how tiny fluctuations quickly build up to earthshaking results—the famous "butterfly effect" to give a rather dull explaination of the deterministic chaos theory. Nietzsche and the other philosophers were plain right—God was never alive, but always dead. Even as the fiction of divine habitat shrinks before the
aggressive encroachment of science, the quantum foam of space-time may be ascribed to create a little confused space for the crazy delusion based on the spare universes, offering space both for self-described "deeply and spiritually confused believers". Many eminent practitioners of science have successfully persuaded themselves that there is no logical contradiction between faith and belief, by inventing a science-fiction of Allah/God, or by clothing a traditional fiction in new terminology of science fiction. Unsure of whether they happen to exist at all, humans are likely to scour the miserable delusion of heavens forever in search of some sort of meaning.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Will of the Ulema rules-- a public hoodwink on Women's Reserved Seats

Dear Br. Mufassil Islam:

I would have responded to you earlier, however, I was trying to make any sense out of what you wrote.

No offense but this is probably one of the wrost piece of crock I have ever read on this fourm. Your claim that women are inferior to men psychologically and philosophically is rediculous, baseless, and unsubstantiated. You have proved it to yourself that you have never read anyting about human history and civilization, or if you did read you didn't learn anything. Just remember that womenkind is more than 50% of the total population of the world.

As to your other arguments, I say women are no more feminists that men are shovenists. In fact througout human history it is people like you who had claimed men's superiority and subjugagted women and shunned them from public lives. The logics you have used to prove men's supriority is quite insincere and twisted.

Your piece is insensitive, derogatory and utter nonsense. I have just one question, do you still claim yourself to be a human right's champion?

I am disgusted and disapppointed!

It is true that our women are neglected but we also do not have yet many enlightened women folks yet. Whatever so called women politicians or leaders we have - almost all are fanatically feminists. Two leaders in the parliament - women - look what a mess they created. It is nothing to do with gender - yet we have to wait for improving the long neglected other sex. I don't know whether you all will agree with me - it is my personal view - not supported by Quran or any other dogma - but through histiry it has been proved - Men are more intelligent and wiser. We have been idiots as well and most corrupt as well - and most evil as well. But it is Men - who changed the world. I don't understand who can support logically the view that men and women are equal. How? Produce your evidence. Results in GCSC? Laugh - the system is erred. What about Chess playing ranks? Sports? Science? Moral philosophies? If these were the results of domantion by women since eternity - then why women failed to find a way to dominate men? We are not being dominated by tigers. Are we? The truth is - the feminists want female domination. Ask the men of the west how they suffer for irrational family laws where fathers are aliens and men are being abused with the fear of making them lose their children. What I believe and I am straight forward about it - men and women are equal in their humanity and in the senses of souls but - physically - and brainwise - Men are superior - far superior. If men wanted and if men were not rationally equipped - women would have still ben in sackles as breeding species and that would have affected men as well. I don't know how many of you read Engles Origin of Family thourgh Marxist view - but I don't find the logic in deeming that monogamous marriages are signs of male domination. What is the other choice? Let women have hundreds of male partners? Who would suffer more? Sorry but women lack all superior psychological and philosophical senses. No wonder we have not yet seen a single woman philosopher in world history or leadeing facts. So if anyone want their rights - seats in the parliament - let them achieve it.

Mufassil Islam

Women's Reserved Seats in Local Govt

Govt retreats from pledge

Shakhawat Liton

In a surprise move the caretaker government has retreated from its earlier pledge of reserving 40 percent seats for women at all tiers of the local government system for three consecutive terms.

It is widely believed that the government has buckled in the wake of violent protests by hardliner Islamist groups against the National Women's Development Policy 2008.

The pledge however was made to effectively empower women at all levels of the local government system.

On March 23, the council of advisers approved in principle two ordinances regarding formations and functions of city corporations and municipalities with the provision for reserving 40 percent seats exclusively for women.

The government also had a plan to incorporate the same provision in other upcoming laws regarding formations and functions of union, upazila and zila parishads, the sources added.

But an Ulema Committee formed by the government to revi! ew the women's development policy, on April 17 in its recommendations to the government, strongly opposed the policy and asked the government to scrap the provision for increasing the number of reserved seats for women in the local government system, representatives to which would be elected through direct elections according to the earlier proposal.

Following the recommendations of the ulemas, the council of advisers at a special meeting on April 24 finalised the two ordinances regarding city corporations and municipalities scrapping the provision for reserving 40 percent seats for women.

The finalised ordinances however propose to continue the current provision for reserving one-third seats for women in city corporations and municipalities, which is expected to be promulgated as a law by the president soon, handing over a whopping victory to the Islamist hardliners in the country.

According to the existing provision, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has! 90 wards headed by as many commissioners. In addition, there are prov isions for 30 women commissioners. Each woman commissioner is in charge of three wards. So in reality each ward has two commissioners -- one generally elected commissioner and the other a woman commissioner who is also elected by voters of three wards. This system leads to conflicts in sharing responsibilities as generally elected commissioners are often found to be non-cooperating with the specially elected women commissioners. Similar power sharing systems exist for other city corporations, municipalities and union parishads.

But the proposed law suggested 40 percent of the total 90 wards of DCC be reserved for women. So, there would be no dual commissionership in any ward. Such reserved seats for women were supposed to be in place for three terms totalling in 15 years. After that the government was to make a fresh decision on whether the reserved women's seats would exist or not.

Defending the government's back flip, LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal on April 27 ! claimed to the media that the provision for reserving 40 percent seats for women had to be scrapped, since it would come into conflict with a court verdict.

A government formed expert committee on strengthening local government institutions led by incumbent Health Adviser MM Shawkat Ali, which came up with the original proposal, however did so after reviewing the High Court verdict.

The committee found nothing wrong in reserving 40 percent seats for women for the next 15 years, instead it argued that the constitution does not discourage making special provisions for women's development.

Referring to the High Court judgement on a writ filed by some women ward commissioners elected to reserved seats in Khulna City Corporation, the LGRD adviser said the provision for reserving seats for women should not be a permanent system.

The petitioners filed the writ to avoid being marginalised in the name of being assigned with 'special duties'.

In ! fact according to the High Court's verdict, representatives elected to reserved seats for women cannot be officially assigned with 'special duties' in local governments and they must be treated as equals to other elected representatives.

The High Court verdict actually said nothing about the percentage of seats to be reserved for women.

DRFAT LAW FOR ZILA, UPAZILA & UNION PARISHADS
Meanwhile, in line with the government's latest reversal of decisions, the LGRD ministry already drafted a law regarding formations, elections and functions of union, upazila and zila parishads without keeping the provision for reserving 40 percent seats for women, who would be elected through direct votes, sources in the ministry said.

The draft ordinance proposes to continue the current provision for reserving three seats for women in each union parishad, having jurisdiction over nine general wards, a source said.

Meaning, each elected woman to reserved seats in a union parishad will have to share her authority with th! ree other elected members, running the risk of being marginalised.

At upazila and zila parishad levels, instead of reserving 40 percent seats for women, the new draft law proposes to keep one-third of total posts reserved for women, who will be elected through indirect votes.

Women, who are already elected to reserved seats at lower tiers of the local government system will only be able to contest in elections to upazila and zila parishads, and an electoral college of already elected women to reserved seats at lower tiers will elect from among themselves the representatives to reserved seats for women in upazila and zila parishads, says the draft law.

The LGRD ministry draft however proposes to create a post of a vice-chairman in each upazila and zila parishads, which will be reserved for women elected through direct votes.

Currently there are around 14,500 women representatives elected to reserved seats in over 4,000 union parishads, 6 city c! orporations, and the municipalities.
