[mukto-mona] Socialim& Democracy

Socialim and/versus democracy debate is healthy.
SR

Socialism : The Terminator of Democracy by K G Somasekharan Nair Vol XLVI, No 21 10 May 08 (http://mainstreamweekly.net/article686.html)

At present a hot discussion on the subject—whether socialism is possible in future—continues after negative observations of Jyoti Basu on the subject recently. Along with a discussion on the possibility of socialism, a study on its acceptability may also be conducted. Because some Indian Communists persist that socialism is possible and acceptable if it is remoulded using the lessons of the Soviet experience. But the fatal reasons that culminated in the dissolution of the Soviet Union lay in the Bolshevik Revolution and the subsequent application of scientific socialism to the whole nation.
Perhaps it may not be very difficult to conduct a socialist revolution and constitute a revolutionary government if half per cent of the total population of a country is organised in an armed revolutionary group induced by socialist theories under a strong leadership. But only by these successful attempts can a socialist form of society be created? According to the basic concepts of scientific socialism there is a transitional period of proletarian dictatorship in the political structure and state capitalism in the economic sector between the commencement of the revolution and the realisation of socialism. However, a study of the Russian Revolution and continuation of the revolution resulted in dissolution of the Soviet Union; the available facts have shown how a beautiful hypothesis was ruined due to confrontation with the hard realities of practice.
As everybody knows, the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 was not conducted on the decision of the whole people of Russia or by a majority. It cannot be said to have done by a minority even. But it was a mere sabotage act performed by some adventurers headed by Lenin, being a micro minority in the total Russian population. But it is celebrated by the Communists as the "Great October Revolution".
As generally understood, the Bolshevik Revolution was not conducted against the Tsar. Because he had been dethroned in the February Revolution of 1917 and Kerensky, the leader of the Menshevik Party, was ruling with the support of Socialist Revolutionaries. The Social Democratic Party of the proletariat, formed earlier in Russia, had split up into the Menshevik and Bolshevik parties. Among which the Menshevik was a liberal democratic party having an open structure without any restriction for membership. But the Bolshevik Party was a cadre based organisation having military training with strict discipline and top-secret instructions. They believed in using force, violence and bloodshed to any extent. They had a mentality of hatred, ill-will and intolerance. Eradication of the bourgeois class and the formation of a working class government was their motto. In the October Revolution of 1917 they subverted the Kerensky Government under the leadership Lenin and formed a revolutionary government headed by him.
The revolutionists annihilated the Tsar, his family and kinsfolk completely even though they were out of power. This event had a history. Alexander Illich, the elder brother of Lenin, was a revolutionist and took part in a criminal conspiracy to assassinate the Tsar. When the conspiracy was proved Alexander was sentenced to death. Here Lenin conducted the revolution and seized power to settle his account of blood feud on the pretext of liberation of the working class. His next atempt was to stick on to power by any means. At the same time sympathisers of the Tsar family, Mensheviks and Socialist Revolutionaries, comprising the grand majority of Russians, protested. But he used all brutal means of suppression over the protestors earmarked as class enemies. 'Lenin, the Great' ordered his Red Army to shoot the 'class enemies' at sight for the 'continuation of the revolution'. In order to establish state capitalism, the first step to scientific socialism, State Police and Red Army acted jointly to evict farmers from their landholdings and constituted state farms for collective farming. Landowners were forced to work in their own lands without wages or having the right to appropriate any quantum of the produce for their consumption. But all produce had to go to the state pool and distributed through state run agencies in terms of their work. Farmers had to work hard like slaves in collective farms under deplorable conditions for production of the state target. It was not hard work but hard labour they had to do. The same was the case of fully nationalised industrial sector too. Those who refused to work, as directed by the government, were condemned as 'kulaks' or 'anti-labour' and shot dead. The fate of those who were arrested while absconding from labour was also no less than that. Thus millions of Russians were slaughtered being earmarked as kulaks, reactionaries, class enemies or counter-revolutionists and this process was called 'continuance of the revolution'. In order to obstruct the fleeing of farmers and factory workers, freedom of movement was restricted, which became a part of the law subsequently. Perhaps Hitler might have been inspired to set up the concentration camps from such Russian farms. 'From each according to his ability to each according to his work', the motto of socialism, was interpreted to the effect that those who have no ability to work have no right to get anything. Thus hundred of thousands of old and disabled were starved to death. They had a mavellous Constitution to exhibit, a darker one to implement. So Plekhanov, the godfather of Marxian thought, attributed Leninism as terrorism.
In the commissar system of administration in Russia there was no demarcation between the party machinery and state bureaucracy, an anti-democratic approach. But they also believed in democracy. The difference was that it was not a parliamentary democracy based on adult franchise but centralised democracy restraining the voting right to party members only. The cardinal principle—democratic centralism—is that members should act in subordination to the party and the lower fraction of the party should function in subordination to the higher fraction. Even now in India Communist Parties are strictly following the principle of democratic centralism in their party structure while roaring for democratic decentralisation in state administration to make India a flexible federation.

DIALECTICAL Materialism is the backbone of Marxism which is a total enemy of spiritualism; hence Christianity was banned and all churches in Russia locked up after the revolution. Clergymen were tortured brutally and the Bible was banned. The most precious smuggling item to Russia was the Bible for about 75 years. At the same time Lenin reoriented the Communist Party in Catholic discipline and he himself equated his position to that of the Pope, the unmistakable and unquestionable head till death. This structural formula is copied by all Communist Parties in the world. Anyhow Lenin was very intelligent and a scholar in the political economy of Marx and Engels. So he distorted their theories in accordance with his necessities and pleasure and exported their books in that contaminated form along with his interpretations, as a whole called 'Marxism-Leninism'.
According to Marxism, socialism cannot exist in one or two countries but can exist only as an international phenomenon and the socialist world is an ideal one without boundaries and checkposts. So Lenin appended the neighbouring countries forcibly under a sham theory of 'right of nationalities for self-determination'. In remote countries Communist Parties and groups were formed under his political patronage to conduct the revolution and he was ready to provide military support to it whenever and wherever necessary. Such strong was his commitment to Marxist idealism.
Immediately after the death of Lenin in 1924 Joseph Stalin became the General Secretary of the Communist Party; he was a real follower of Lenin. He undertook the challenge for establishing a global Socialist Community resulting in the formation of socialist imperialism in opposition to capitalistic imperialism. The military was multiplied. Arms and ammunitions, including nuclear weapons, were amassed. Huge funds for all those destructive equipments had to be found out by increasing agricultural production and industrial output. State exploitation of farmers and factory workers increased in accordance with the strengthening of state capitalism and socialist imperialism. The ultimate result of all these efforts was economic chaos and famine. 'Equal distribution of poverty' was effected in lieu of the theory of 'equal distribution of property' in socialism. In the absence of ownership for land or house everybody lived as fugitive in her/his own country in frustration. But all attempts to protest by the depressed were suppressed with brute force and they lived in a terrifying atmosphere suspecting each other with the secret police proving thereby that socialism cannot be maintained without state exploitation and persecutionary measures. Many dissenting Communist leaders, statesmen, economists, military officials and cultural personalities were subjected to political accusation and victimisation with the slogan 'continue the revolution'. Among them the names of Leon Trotsky, a champion of the Bolshevik Revolution and founder of the Red Army, and Nikolai Bukharin, a major Marxian theorist, are memorable forever. Trotsky was deported to Mexico and shot dead by KGB agents. Bukharin was sent to the gallows on flimsy grounds. Thus the prediction of Swami Vivekananda, a strong supporter of socialism, that there cannot be any genius in a socialist system of society came to be realised.
It may be noted that pre-revolutionary Russia was producing foodgrains enough to feed the whole of middle Europe. They were first in the world in petroleum. The Siberian desert is enriched with coal, valuable minerals and ores. They were self-sufficient in all natural products except rubber. But after running the steamroller of socialism for three- fourths of a century over the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, the General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, had to bow before G-8 nations to get something to provide bread to his men. The responsibility for such a shameful condition of a large nation and endless perils suffered by crores of people in three generations cannot be fixed upon any Soviet ruler as they had put the principles of scientific socialism into practice. Hence it is socialism which alone stands accused. Pressure of the circumstances led to the historical detonation of the proletariat dictatorship in Soviet Union by 1991. 'Bolshevism' vanished. 'Menshevism' was resurrected. The majority escaped from the rule of the minority. 'Nationalities' attached forcibly to Russia to construct the USSR got their freedom. They became their own masters. The people's of those countries and Russia are deciding their political future now.
As an ideology socialism has originated and developed from boundless fancies and fantasies of human minds desiring to create an ideal world with merits only. If socialism is enforced in a democratic country multiparty politics will perish and a single- party rule of proletariat will come into existence. Parliamentary democracy will be transformed into centralised democracy. General elections and election propaganda will be terminated. Three tiers of state administration, namely, legislative, executive and judiciary, will become different forums of the proletariat party. Newspapers will be edited as state gazettes for publicity of official programmes and the personality cult of leaders. Right to private property will be banned and all means of production nationalised. All these changes are inevitable as the foundation of a socialist society can only be constructed under proletariat dictatorship and state capitalism. Religions will be banned as socialism can be developed only in a materialistic atmosphere. If the theory and experience of socialism is analysed deeply, it can be realised that in a civilised democratic society, characterised by the right to freedom of opinion, organisation, religion and private property, socialism can never be enforced. That is to say, socialism and a classless society are possible only by liquidating democracy. The withering away of the Soviet Union happened ironically on the lines of the Marxist concept of 'withering away of the state'; this is a warning to all those who think about socialism for tomorrow.
While living at the dawn of the 21st century Jyoti Basu, a political realist, showed integrity to speak of the impossibility of his party and the Front to enforce socialist idealism. In order to state so, a chain of events developed in socialist and bourgeois countries in the second half of the 20th century along with his own failure to move towards socialism as the Chief Minister for 27 years, inspired him. But idealists in his party have always an explanation that if they had got enough majority in Parliament to amend the Constitution, they would have implemented socialism in India. However, they may be advised to think of the destiny of socialism in nations where revolutionists had won complete majorities in Parliament for decades. So it is better to forsake the optimism that the dead horse will wake up and they can ride on it after changing the bridle and shoes.

[mukto-mona] Politics of Terror in West Bengal

[What strikes right in the face is the brazenness of
it all. After four lives are lost on the previous day,
the scene repeats again the next day.]

I/II.
http://in.news.yahoo.com/indianexpress/20080516/r_t_ie_nl_politics/tnl-bengal-cpm-cadres-bomb-ally-minister-0058794.html

Bengal CPM cadres bomb ally Minister's house
Express news serviceFri, May 16 02:37 AM

On Sunday, armed CPM cadres freely walked around in
Nandigram and today, in one of the of the worst turf
battles between two Left Front constituents CPM and
the RSP, they allegedly bombed and set ablaze the
house of Subash Naskar, West Bengal Irrigation
Minister from the RSP.

Gouri Naskar, a relative of the minister, sustained 90
per cent burns and was shifted to SSKM hospital in
Kolkata where doctors said she was critical. Her
husband, Uday Naskar, who is the Minister's nephew,
also sustained burn injuries.

The incident triggered off another bout of bitter
squabbling between the Left partners prompting CPM
patriarch Jyoti Basu to comment: "The time has come to
rebuild the Left Front anew. Fissures seem to have run
deep." Only yesterday, three RSP supporters - the
party has only 23 MLAs in a House of 294 - were killed
allegedly by armed CPM cadres. A CPM activist was also
killed.

Basanti, in South 24-Parganas, where the Minister's
house was attacked, has been a traditional stronghold
of the RSP with the CPM playing second fiddle. In
fact, the political power equation here is peculiar:
the RSP occupies the main political space, the CPM
plays the virtual Opposition with neither the
Trinamool nor the Congress having any base. As in
previous panchayat polls, this year too, the two
parties failed to come to any understanding and both
fielded candidates against each other.

Basanti, in a sense therefore, symbolizes the Left's
disunity in these polls. According to one estimate, of
the 41,000 Gram Panchayat seats across the state, the
CPM unilaterally fielded candidates in as many as
36,903 seats. It left barely 4,500 to be shared
between eight other LF constituents which the LF
partners refused to agree on. As a result, the Forward
Bloc and RSP both fielded candidates in about 5000
seats where the CPM put up candidates. Basanti
happened to be one such area.

In fact, the build-up to the poll was fraught with
tension as RSP's Kshiti Goswami and state PWD Minister
urged party supporters to adopt the "Nandigram model
of opposition" to the CPM. "Just as in Nandigram, all
anti-CPM forces should unite to fight the CPM," was
his constant refrain in election rallies.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, accused of
letting the administration turn the other way while
such violence rocked the area, today initiated a fresh
move to rein in the warring partners. He formed a
committee, comprising Rezzak Mollah, the CPM Minister
for Land Reforms; Kanti Ganguly, also from CPM and
Minister for Sunderban Affairs and Subash Naskar, the
target of today's attack, and asked them to defuse the
crisis.

Ironically, Naskar and Ganguly were busy at a
peace-meeting at Sonakhali this afternoon when
Naskar's supporters came rushing to inform him that
his house had been attacked by an armed group of CPM
cadres and set ablaze. Naskar rushed to his house to
find it in flames.

Locals alleged that several men on motorcycles arrived
at Charvidya village, about 85 km from Kolkata, and
hurled bombs at Naskar's house. The house soon caught
fire. CPM zonal committee leader Sudarshan Samal,
however, denied these charges and claimed that bombs
stored in the house had gone off.

The SP rushed to the spot with a team of the Rapid
Action Force and later said that no bomb remnants
could be traced at the house. The case will be
investigated by the CID and the state forensic
department, he said. Home Secretary Ashok Mohan
Chakraborty said the Chief Minister "personally
monitored the situation" and several decisions had
been taken to bring down the temperature in the
disturbed area.

These include: withdrawal of the bandh call given by
RSP and the CPM; avoiding processions or political
meetings in the area for the next 10 days and
re-polling in certain booths without the involvement
of any party volunteers.

Basu unity fear echoes in blast
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
Subhas Naskar

Calcutta, May 15: Jyoti Basu today virtually conceded
that the Left Front's unity was in tatters and asked
all to "learn a lesson" but the subsequent violence at
Basanti reopened the still weeping wounds.

The RSP, whose leader and irrigation minister Subhas
Naskar's house was attacked in Basanti, drew a
parallel between this government and the Siddhartha
Shankar Ray regime and threatened to pull out, but
admitted this would be a difficult decision.

PWD minister and RSP leader Kshiti Goswami today said
he wanted to discuss the possibility of a pullout
within the party. "In view of the Basanti incidents, I
can spell out my personal opinion about stepping down
from the ministry. But I want my party to discuss it
first," he said in Malda.

After four deaths in Basanti yesterday, Basu said:
"Our party as well as others have to learn a lesson
and avoid the rerun of violence in the third phase of
polls."

He said "elections need to be peaceful, otherwise
there is no meaning in holding them. I was relieved
after the first phase went off peacefully. But the
situation turned out to be different in the second
phase".

"In the wake of criticism of our policies, we realised
that the disunity over seat-sharing would be worse
this time. Talks (on seat-sharing) failed with the RSP
and Bloc in many places. Biman (Bose) tried his best.
But it could not be achieved," Basu said.

Hours after Basu's sounded caution, CPM supporters
allegedly threw a bomb at Naskar's ancestral house in
Basanti, critically injuring his nephew's wife, Gouri
Naskar.

The RSP took out a rally in Calcutta to protest the
"terror campaign" of the CPM. Party leaders called the
incident "a shame for Left politics" and threatened to
"seriously" consider the option of pulling out at the
party's state secretariat meeting on Monday.

"Many in our rank and file want to pull out. We have
to rethink our position as it becomes meaningless to
be in the government and the front when the original
purpose of the front has ceased to hold any meaning.
So, we are keeping all options open," said RSP veteran
Manoj Bhattacharjee.

"We are witnessing a rerun of the terror campaign of
the Congress regime of Siddhartha Shankar Ray in the
early seventies,'' he said. "But it will be a
difficult decision.''

Fifteen booths in Basanti will see repolling on May
19. They are among the over 60 booths that the state
election commission has marked out so far. "The exact
number of booths will be known by tomorrow," said
election commissioner Asok Gupta.

CPM attack

Alleged CPM supporters ransacked the home of a former
party member who is now with the Forward Bloc,
sparking tension in Dinhata, Cooch Behar.

Subir Adhikary, whose house was attacked, lodged an
FIR naming CPM supporters who are residents of the
area.

[mukto-mona] Re: Israel's 60th year and the Palestinaian Naqba.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48264

"I wonder what is the real catastrophe or Naqba? The creation of
Israel or the 60 years old Arab failure to come to terms with the
realities?"- Akbar Hussain

The answer is '60 years old Arab failure to come to terms with the
realities'. In Arab/Muslim psyche the only solution is "my way or no
way". In most cases they were getting away with it, but Israel is a
hard nut to crack.

To get real freedom one has to accomodate freedom and develop
trustworthyness. Due to non democratic, non inclusive, fundamental
nature of Arab/Muslim psyche the rest of the world do not value their
judgement.

[mukto-mona] His address, their agony, and country’s expectations

Hope you are doing well and thanks for publishing my previous write-ups

This is an article about "His address, their agony, and country's expectations". I will be highly honoured if you publish this article. I apprecite your time to read this article.

Thanks

Have a nice time

His address, their agony, and country's expectations

Ripan Kumar Biswas
Ripan.Biswas@yahoo.com

"There may be disputes, rivalry, and competition between government and political parties, but in eventual judgment, while we all are trying to launch a healthy and stable democratic process in the country and 150 million people's expectation to stand before the comity of the world with national identity, flourished with the spirit of self-confidence, these are not our main features," Chief Adviser of the present military-backed interim government of Bangladesh Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed hoped in an address to the nation over state-owned radio and television on May 12, 2008 regarding the planned dialogue beginning May 22 between government and political parties. Everybody should have to overcome all narrowness, vengeance, and mistrust in proceeding towards the end, he further added.

His government that took over the responsibility of the government on January 12, 2007 with ongoing state of emergency in the backdrop of inevitable changes, declared the date for political transition, possibly any day in the third week of December next, and planned to hold a dialogue between the government and political parties to bring qualitative improvement in political structure.

Total 19 political parties, including Awami League, Jatiya Party, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, Liberal Democratic Party, Unity for Political Reforms, Bangladesh Nationalist Party [mainstream], Islami Shasantantra Andolan, Bangladesher Samajtantric Dal, Khelafat Andolan, Khelafat Majlish and the splinter group of BNP (Bangladesh National Party), had been invited, according to the chief adviser's spokesman, Syed Fahim Munaim. But various political parties and groups appear to be unhappy with the contents of address by the Chief Adviser (CA), saying they had found no reflection of people's expectations in it.

In their criticism, several things were common, like lack of specific commitment on withdrawal of the state of emergency, allowing war criminals to participate in the elections, and government incompetence for the present food price hikes. Referring their five-point demand including immediate and unconditional release of party president and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina enabling her to take part in the national dialogue, AL formally rejected his address, saying the CA failed to create trust among the people about the national dialogue in his speech while according to the BNP secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, CA completely ignored the party's 18-point demand which includes release of party's supremo and former Premier – Khaleda Zia.

Several others expressed their deep frustrations on ban on indoor politics across the country terming it more complicated as the political parties would have to inform the administration 48 hours before holding a meeting and require permission for a gathering of more than 200 people. CA's proposed 'national charter,' a guideline to make strong relations among political parties, institutions, and communities across the country on the basis of consensus on relevant matters prior to the polls so qualitative changes are censured in government and political systems after the election, was not welcomed and brought confusion as according to the political parties, only the people's elected parliament has the authority to formulate such things. In his comments, Communist Party general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim opposed any such charter as the 1972 constitution is the only national charter in Bangladesh and he wanted to restore secular constitution.

CA described the much-talked-dialogue, which is scheduled to be placed at his office, is a trust-based initiative. While he assured that the government had no pre-fixed agenda and didn't have any hostility against anyone, different political parties observed the address intensified the people's confusion over elections and dialogues instead of dispelling such confusion. Government once again assured everyone including political parties to provide all-out support and cooperation based on the needs and demands from the Election Commission (EC). But political parties claimed that the state of emergency wouldn't be lifted before the polls and there would be both direct and indirect influences on the polls by relaxing the state of emergency.

EC's ongoing efforts to hold elections at local levels would not create any obstacle to attain the prime target — to hold national elections, CA promised. He explained that the polls at the local levels would able to create a positive flow towards greater national elections. If the government, which has no political ambitions, intends to hold local government polls before the national elections, it prompts people to raise questions about and doubt the attitude of the government, Jamaat-e-Islami amir, Matiur Rahman Nizami opposed government's intention. AL echoed the same, including BNP while it was announcing mass hunger strike in every district, upazila, and union on May 20 to press for releasing Hasina. Opposing

His address, political parties agony of doubt, and country's sufferings are all for a sustainable democracy in the country. "Our all endeavors would turn into despair unless a healthy and stable democracy is introduced," CA opined. Speakers at a roundtable meeting titled 'Exercise of democracy inside political parties' at the Cirdap auditorium on May 14, 2008 also again discussed like many other times about what factors were the reasons behind 1/11 scenario either bureaucrats, professional bodies, businessmen, or political parties. Whoever, there was no mutual respects among political parties for each other as well as cordial and effective relationship among them.

For democracy is not only the right of every one to be equal, but also the equal right of every one to be different. Although, no major political parties exercise democracy, but democracy cannot be established through pressure or with mighty hands. Democracy recognizes not only the dictum of the majority, but also the need to respect the minority. The parliament does not hide its decisions, just as it is not ashamed to build bridges and suggest compromises, with the aim of defending the unity of the many and the dignity of the few.

The present world is very competitive and fast moving. The country is facing rising fuel prices and food shortages. A struggling economy and continued acrimonious and tense relations between the government and the businessmen have increased citizen's cynicism about any such reforms or proposals or even drive against corruptions. Therefore all political and administrative activities should be complementary to economic development to keep pace with the world economy as every day and every hour is very important to keep economic wheels moving on. The proponents of democracy generally regard economic freedom as a key element in any democratic society.

The entire election process should be free from black money, muscle power, administrative biases, nomination trade, and excessive expenses for poll campaigns to get a sustainable democratic society, therefore, to make inroads for honest, worthy, and dynamic leadership. To return to a stable democracy, both the government and political parties should reach consensus on all important issues so that everybody can participate in the elections.

There may be dispute between government and political parties, but as long as it's a concern to strengthen democracy, ensure a corruption-free society, and guarantee an economically secure Bangladesh, the upcoming dialogue shouldn't to be derailed with any other considerations.

Hindus lost 26 lakh acres of land from 1965 to 2006
Says study
Staff Correspondent

Members of the Hindu community have lost 26 lakh acres of land from 1965 to 2006, while an estimated one crore Hindus were forced to leave the country from 1964 to 2001 because of communal conflicts and deprivation caused by the Enemy (Vested) Property Act, according to a study.

The price of the land and other movable properties lost by 12 lakh Hindu families has been estimated at Tk 350412 crore, said the study sponsored by the Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) and Nijera Kori.

The study report was published in the form of a book titled 'Deprivation of Hindu Minority in Bangladesh: Living with Vested Property', which was launched at LGED auditorium in the city yesterday.

Prof Abul Barakat, lead author of the book, said the government has identified only seven lakh acres of vested land, of which two lakh acres have been leased out and five lakh acres remain under the control of the grabbers.

Terming the identification of so small amount of vested land a failure of the administration, Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman, former chief adviser to a caretaker government, said the administration of the country is "impossibly inefficient."

"There is a direct link between right to property and democracy," he said, adding that all should work to help establish the rights of those who lost their properties.

In the study, Prof Barakat said, "Only five lakh people who were in power grabbed the land. This problem needs an immediate solution."

People involved with BNP politics grabbed 1749500 acres, those involved with Awami League grabbed 361400 acres, people involved with Jamaat-e-Islami grabbed 226200 acres and those engaged with Jatiya Party looted 182000 acres of vested land, said the study.

Besides, 1820 acres of land was grabbed by people linked with Muslim League and 10400 acres of land by people involved with other political parties, it added.

The study recommended establishing a vested property bank to maintain all statistics of such property and handing over the land to distressed and landless Hindus living in the country.

Justice Golam Rabbani blamed the administration for having strong link with influential people in grabbing the enemy properties.

"There will be no change without the change in attitude of the bureaucracy," he said emphasising on strong parliament and peoples' democracy.

Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique of Dhaka University said general people are facing different problems, but the Hindus are subjected to more exploitation and deprivation because of the discriminatory laws.

He urged all to work together to remove all disparities for a true democratic society.

Lt Gen (retd) Harun-ur-Rashid, Supreme Court Advocate Subrata Chowdhury and ALRD Executive Director Shamsul Huda also spoke at the programme chaired by Nijera Kori Coordinator Khushi Kabir.

[mukto-mona] Article 2 : Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete?

Article 2 : Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete?

Yes, of course  - speaks a psychologist
While discussing "Science" I mean the entire enterprise of secular reason and knowledge (including history and philosophy), not just people who working in their white lab coats,
create babies within test tubes.
Traditionally, a belief in an Allah/God was attractive because it promised to explain the deepest puzzles about origins. Where did the world come from? What is the basis of life? How can the mind arise from the body? Why should anyone be moral?

Yet over the millennia, there has been an inexorable trend: the deeper we probe these questions, and the more we learn about the world in which we live, the less reason there is to believe in an Allah/God.

Start with the origin of the world. Today no honest and informed person can maintain that the universe came into being a few thousand years ago and was made by an Allah/God in six days (to say nothing of the questions like day and night existing before the sun was created). Nor is there a more abstract role for an Allah/God to play as the ultimate first cause. This trick simply replaces the puzzle of "Where did the universe come from?" with the equivalent puzzle "Where did Allah/God came from/who created this Allah/God?"

What about the fantastic diversity of life and its ubiquitous signs of design? At one time it was understandable to name an Allah/God designer as creatoe of it all. No longer. Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace showed how the complexity of life could arise from the physical process of natural selection among replicators, and then Watson and Crick showed how DNA replication itself could be understood in physical terms. Notwithstanding religious creationist propaganda, the evidence for evolution is overwhelming, including our DNA, the fossil record, the distribution of life on earth, and our own anatomy and physiology.

For many people the human soul feels like a divine spark within us. But neuroscience has shown that our intelligence and emotions consist of intricate patterns of activity in the trillions of connections in our brain thus creating the so-called divine spark. However, relabeling the brain activity with the word "soul" adds nothing to our understanding.

People used to think that biology could not explain why we have a conscience. But the human moral sense can be studied like any other mental faculty, such as thirst, color vision, or fear of heights. Evolutionary psychology and cognitive neuroscience are showing how our moral intuitions work, why they evolved, and how they are implemented within the brain.

This leaves morality itself—the benchmarks that allow us to criticize and improve our moral intuitions. It is true that neither science nor an Allah/God can show what is right or wrong. It's not just that the traditional Judeo-Christian God or Islamic Allah endorsed genocide, slavery, rape, and the death penalty for trivial insults. It's that morality cannot be grounded in a fictional divine decree, not even on mere abstract principle. Why did a fictional Allah/God arbitrarily deem some acts moral and others immoral? When even his existance is an illusion, we have no reason to trust such a divine whim, why should we take this fictional being's commandments seriously?

Those reasons are found in the nature of rationality as it is exercised by any intelligent human society. The essence of morality is the concept of reciprocity and the collectivity of humans being watchful of other's behaviour. The fact that as soon as I appeal to you to help me when I am in need, or not to hurt me for no reason, I have to be willing to apply the same standards to you. That is the only policy that is logically consistent and makes both of us as well as the society in geberal better off. And an Allah/God plays no role in it.

For all these reasons, it's no coincidence that European democracies have experienced three sweeping trends during the past few centuries: barbaric religious practices (such as slavery, sadistic criminal punishment, and the mistreatment of children) have decreased significantly; scientific and scholarly understanding has increased exponentially; and belief in an Allah/God has decreased. Science, in the broadest sense, is making belief in God obsolete, and we are the better for it.

[mukto-mona] Article 1 : Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete?

Article 1 : Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete?
Necessarily, it does - speaks a physicist
If not, we must invent a science-friendly, science-compatible fiction of Allah/God. First, try the pantheon of available fictional creators. Inspect thoroughly. If none fits the bill, invent a new one. The Allah/God of your choice must be a stickler for the so-called divine principles laid down by the priests-the classical inventors of Allah/God over the centuries. Science does not take kindly to the so-called deity who, ignorants suppose, if piqued or euphoric, sets aside seismological or cosmological principles and in wild dreams of many, can causes the moon to shiver, the earth to split asunder, or, as to some stupids, such a deity may even cause the universe to suddenly reverse its expansion. This fictional Allah/God must, among other things, be stoically indifferent to supplications for changing local meteorological conditions, the task already being naturally performed by the discipline of fluid dynamics. Therefore, religious  people, even if they pray earnestly with their buutocks elevated in the air, dance with great energy around totem poles, shall not cause even a drop of rain to fall on parched soil. This newly invented, rule-abiding and science respecting Allah/God/Bhagwan equally well dispenses with tearful Christians singing the Book of Job, pious Hindus feverishly reciting the havan yajna, or earnest Muslims performing the « special rain prayers » in hot dry deserts as they face the former abide of idols, the so-called holy Ka'aba.
The fact is that the equations of fluid flow, not the number of earnest supplicants or quality of their prayers, determine weather outcomes. This is grossly irreligious otherwise one could imagine joining the faithful of all religions in a huge simultaneous but vain global prayer that stupids feel would wipe away the pernicious effects of anthropogenic global climate change. Your chosen Allah/God cannot entertain private petitions for good health and longevity, prevent an air crash, or send woe upon demand to the enemy. Mindful of microbiology and physiology, She/He cannot cure leprosy by dipping the afflicted in rivers or have humans remain in unscathed condition after being devoured by a huge fish. Faster-than-light travel is also out of the question, even for the so-called prophets and special messengers. Instead, She/He must stay as the fictional and nominal runner of the world according to the laws and unto the letter, closely following the flow of Nature. A scientific fictional Creator should certainly know an awful lot of science which the formerly invented medieval Allah/God did't need. To differentiate between the countless universes discovered by superstring theory is a headache. Fine-tuning chemistry to generate complex proteins, and then initiating a cascade of mutations that turn microbe to man, is also no trivial matter. But bear in mind that there are definite limits to knowledge, whether by man or by any fictional creator: the fictional Allah/God can supposedly know only the limited, the knowable. Omniscience and science do not go well with each other. The difficulty with omniscience—even with regard to a particle as humble as the electron—has been recognized as an issue since the 1920s. Subatomic particles show a vexing, subtle elusiveness that defeats even the most sophisticated effort to measure certain of their properties even when tried by a fictional Allah/God. Unpredictability is intrinsic to quantum mechanics, the branch of physics which all particles are empirically seen to show. This discovery so disturbed Albert Einstein that he rejected quantum mechanics, pronouncing that the fictional Allah/God could not "play dice with the universe." But it turned out that Einstein's objections were flawed—uncertainty is deeply fundamental. Thus, any science-abiding fictional deity we invent will be incompletely informed on many aspects of nature. Is one being excessively audacious, perhaps impertinent, in setting down terms of reference for a fictional divine and non-existant entity? Really ! Humans have always invented their objects of worship. Smarter humans go for smarter fictional versions of Allah/God. Anthropomorphic representations—such as a Allah/God with octopus arms—are a bit out of fashion today but were enormously popular just a few centuries ago. As well, some people might object to binding fictional Allah/God and the real human to the same rules of logic, or perhaps even sharing the same space-time manifold. But if we drop this essential demand then little shall remain. Reason and evidence would lose meaning and be replaced by fiction, tradition, and the delusion of revelation. It would then be wrong for us to  have 2 + 2 = 5, but okay for inventing the fiction of an Allah/God. Centuries of human progress would come to naught.
Let's face it: the day of the mythical Sky God is long gone. In the Age of Science, religion has been re-invented, and the medieval Allah/God of classical religions has lost repute and territory. Today people pay lip service to trusting that rusty Allah/God but they still swallow medicines when sick. Muslim-run airlines start a plane journey with prayers but ask passengers to buckle-up anyway, and most suspect that people who are falsely rumoured to rise miraculously from the dead were probably not quite dead to begin with. These days if you hear a voice telling you to sacrifice your only son, you would probably report it to the authorities instead of taking the poor lad up a mountain, and if you really took your son to an alter for sacrifice, the state will sure put you in a mental asylum, irrespective of whether you call yourself the prophet Abrahim or somebody else. As you can well imagine, the old trust is disappearing.
Nevertheless, there remains the tantalizing fiction of a divine power somewhere "out there" who is blamed to run a mysterious, but scrupulously and rather stupidly, a miracle-free universe. In this universe, the fictional Allah/God may be dishonestly ascribed to act in ingenious ways that seem miraculous. Yet these fictional and "never-actually-verified-miracles" do violate physical laws and seem ridiculous. Ordinary and naturally, no supernatural interventions in the physical world could permit quantum tunneling through cosmic holes. It would be perfectly unfair for a scientific mind to invent a fictional Allah/God to explain the nonlinear dynamics to explain how tiny fluctuations quickly build up to earthshaking results—the famous "butterfly effect" to give a rather dull explaination of the deterministic chaos theory. Nietzsche and the other philosophers were plain right—God was never alive, but always dead.  Even as the fiction of divine habitat, the sky, shrinks before the aggressive encroachment of science, the quantum foam of space-time may be ascribed to  create a little confused space for the crazy delusion based on the spare universes, offering space both for self-described "deeply and spiritually confused  believers". Many eminent practitioners of science have successfully persuaded themselves that there is no logical contradiction between faith and belief, by inventing a science-fiction of Allah/God, or by clothing a traditional fiction in new terminology of science fiction. Unsure of whether they happen to exist at all, humans are likely to scour the miserable delusion of heavens forever in search of some sort of meaning.
