"The comment by Ahmed Sharif that from 1947 to 1989 didn't witness any
communal riot in this subcontinent-----"
I really want to see the reference from which Ahmed Sharif has been quoted. How can Ahmed Sharif say that when Meerat, Ahmedabad, Dhaka, Khulana, Narayanganj and other communal killings occurred while he was very much a well informed conscious progressive intellectual? Can some one please quote a few lines from the relevant book by Ahmed Sharif?

[mukto-mona] Re: Fwd. A good judge of art "ancient erotic art has been religious in character"

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48400

Dear Dr Irfani,

While I am absolutely against the Hindu fundamentalists who have been trying t inflict their Naziesque ideology upon India, there is an aspect to M F Hussain that is being ignored by the Indian media in its defense of his art. We lived on Montieth Road in Madras when I was in school, just half a block away from Montieth Lane where Mr Hussain's daughter lived at the time and where he spent many months every year through the 1970s and 80s. We would wait to see him in the evenings when he went on his walk every day (Madras was not yet Chennai as it is called now and it was nowhere near the polluted and overcrowded ghetto that it has become these days) to laugh at his habit of wearing different footwear on each of his feet. He would wear a formal shoe on one foot and a sneaker or a sandal on the other or occasionally wear one item of footwear on one foot and walk with the other one barefoot for some reason.

But those were also years during which he began to actively court controversy. In one of his paintings, he painted a donkey standing before the Ka'aba. He got away with doing this during a time when India was a vastly more secular nation than it is now though I remember a television interview on Doordarshan, the national TV channel, where he was grilled for having painted this and could not respond to the interviewer's questions in any satisfactory way. Many years later, Rajiv Gandhi opened the Pandora's Box of religious fundamentalism in India by first allowing TV serials on the Hindu epics to be shown in an interpretation that was clearly aimed at demonizing the Muslim and Christian minorities and he then went on to reverse the judgement in the Shah Bano case and tried to use Salman Rushdie's insipid books to make him a scapegoat by being the first national leader in the world to ban his book, "The Satanic Verses".

Mr Hussain's equally silly stunts have put his life in danger now because this time he has a determined Hindu fundamentalist group out baying for his blood in the country of his birth and where he has been a resident for most of his life.

As an atheist who does not follow any faith though he still enjoys religious music and art, I find people like M F Hussain and Salman Rushdie's attempts at poking fun of people's beliefs silly and unbecoming of people with their talent. This is NOT to condone those who have made it their life's duty to try to victimize them but I do believe that these very intelligent people could have been less offensive than they have chosen to be.

Best wishes,

Mehul Kamdar

[mukto-mona] Re: NRI reacts to land grab

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48398

Dear Mr Ray,

This is an issue that I have long worried about since the Government
of India passed the 44th Amendment Act of the Constitution in 1978 to
remove the Right to Property from the fundamental rights that the
writers of the constitution had assured the people of independent
India. The right was removed as a ploy by the Indian government on an
assurance to poor land labourers that they would be given land that
belonged to the erstwhile zamindari class and the royal families
whose possessions were taken away when Privy Purses and Previleges
were abolished. In fact, this was only a means to deprive those who
were politically weak and lacked influence of their possessions.

The concent pf "eminent domain" is one that has been in practice
among capitalist societies and ancient monarchies like Britain alike,
for centuries, where either the crown or the state has a right over
all property within a country's borders. Historically this was always
a pretext on which rulers could take properties over if they wanted
them. Eminent domain was only a legal excuse that they offered to
justify plunder. While there have been arguments made that this is
justified in the "national interest" in the USA, the US Supreme Court
has allowed the taking over of the house of a retired teacher to
build a shopping mall on the premises, saying that the taxes that the
town would gain from the mall justified rendering the teacher
homeless. Similarly, the influential owners of the New York Times
have managed to take over a restaurant in New York in order to build
their headquarters on the premises. These laws have only been a means
to deprive the poor of their property whether it is Nandigram or
Singur where the CPM government used the 44th Amendment to take poor
farmers' land away or in Massachussetts where the teacher lost his
home or finally in New York where a poor restaurant owner was
victimised. Nobody in West Bengal is going to take over Chandan
Basu's property, in Massachussetts Ted Kennedy and John Kerry are unlikely to lose their homes and in New York, the $ 95 million estate put up for sale by the Sulzbergers who own the New York Times, will never be taken away for public purposes.

If India is to be anything better than yet another petty tyranny, it
needs to throw the 44th Amendment of the Constitution in the dustbin
and look seriously at repatriating land to the many poor across the
country who have been deprived of the only thing that they own.

Best wishes,

Mehul Kamdar

[ALOCHONA] Re: MINHAZ, THE YOUNGER BROTHER of GEN. MOINUDDIN is OUT of REACH of DUDOK

You have to be a dumb person to be a soldier or army officer, a very
common rule applicable for all the countries in the world. So, when
the army officers in Bangladesh do corruption they keep traces here
and there like stupids and it is very easy to catch those.

No contractor or supplier can do busineess without paying bribe to
the concerened officials while supplying to Bangladesh Army. This is
quite open secret and the envelopes of money (bribe) are distributed
in broad day light in cantonments!

DGDP is the most corrupt part of Bangladesh Army where all the
officers become RICH after they join DGDP. And most of the army, air
force and navy officers working there keep their illegal money by
purchasing apartments and lands. This is why the file of apartment
owners'list went down under darkness after it had been made by army
itself!

It is true that CTG is afraid to take actions agaisnt bureaucrats,
but they could take actions against retired bureaucrats to give
lessons to current bureaucrats! Same goes for the army officials...

Current CTG is opearting anti-corruption activities like one eyed
blind dogs who can't see (in fact, don't want to see) the corrupt
persons who stays very near to them!

[ALOCHONA] It’s time for India to refrain from anti-Bangladesh words, deeds

Editorial
It's time for India to refrain from anti-Bangladesh words, deeds

In the aftermath of the May 13 series of blasts in the Indian tourist city of Jaipur, which killed at least 60 people, the state government of Rajasthan, even before a thorough investigation could begin, hinted at the involvement of Bangladeshis. The Rajasthan government also launched a drive against whom they called 'illegal Bangladeshi immigrants' and rounded up 40 'such Bangladeshi nationals' within the first three days after the blast. Now, it emerges that the central government of India, in a letter sent to the Rajasthan government, has suggested that 'illegal Bangladeshi immigrants' should be put in a 'transit camp like Guantanamo Bay'. We are naturally concerned.
Every day several thousand Bangladeshis enter India, with valid visa documents, for tourism, education and medical treatment, contributing significantly to the Indian economy. Many of them who are practising Muslims make it a point to go to Rajasthan for a visit to the shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer. It is reported in the Indian media that many such tourists from Bangladesh have already been harassed by the police in the name of interrogation. The entire episode is unjust and seems to betray the anti-Bangladesh mindset of the Indian ruling coterie. New Delhi's ready reference to Guantanamo Bay, which epitomises wanton disregard for human rights and the very mention of which triggers disdain from the conscious and conscientious sections of the world, does not speak well of India's respect for human rights either.
It is not the first time that New Delhi or a state government has pointed finger at Bangladesh for terrorist attacks in India. In August 2007, in the wake of the twin blasts that ripped through a park and a crowded restaurant in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, which killed at least 42 people, the Indian government was quick to blame the attacks on Pakistan and Bangladesh, again before any investigation into the incident. Regrettably, many leading Indian media establishments unquestioningly joined what may be called the jingoism bandwagon steered by New Delhi.
As we have said time and again, religious radicalism and concomitant terrorism, which seems to have festered in South Asia over the past few years, is a threat to peace and harmony in the entire region and thus the South Asian governments need to coordinate their anti-terror actions under a regional framework. Such a coordinated effort is only possible if the governments of the region try to understand each other's problem, instead of becoming problems for each other.
New Delhi's tendency to readily blame Bangladesh may also end up stoking jingoism in both countries, which would eventually only heighten mutual mistrust and recrimination. Such circumstances would only strengthen religious radicalism on either side of the border and dash the people's aspiration for democratisation of the entire region. We would, therefore, urge the Indian government to refrain from implicating an entire population for what could very well be its own security lapse and instead concentrate on a thorough investigation of the Jaipur blast and all such incidents and take follow-up steps so that such tragedies do not recur.
At the same time, we would demand that our government immediately make an unambiguous public announcement detailing what steps it has taken to ensure safety and security of Bangladeshi nationals now in India on either short or long sojourn.

[mukto-mona] NRI reacts to land grab

RE:Officials on land-grab job get nightmares (http://thestatesman.net/page.discuss.php?clid=6&theme=&usrsess=1&id=13593&newsid=205271)

In Essence the LAND GRAB was a LAND STEAL by the COMMIES from the poor people at a very low price and then sell it at a huge multiplier to the BIG CROCODILES.

All the loots would have been shared by the Party Members and the Government Officers as payoff. Business houses were ready to deal with these shysters, though they hate the COMMUNIST IDEOLOGY.

Until good governance come with transparanecy of the deal, we should continually hound these bastards in COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT, thievs and the looters.

Get democracy working first. Get the POLICE cleaned up. Get hospitals working. Get transporation running. Businesses will come no matter what. Kolkata is a choice direction for IT businesses next to Bangalore. First install a democratic government for the people, by the people of the people and get rid of the Murdering Communist-Fascists.

[mukto-mona] LF loses majority

GP results rub it in (http://thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=1&theme=&usrsess=1&id=205233)
Statesman News Service
KOLKATA, May 23: For the first time since the Left Front introduced the panchayati raj system in the state in 1978, it lost control of nearly 50 per cent of the gram panchayats this time, signifying that nearly half of rural Bengal has turned its face away from the Marxist-led regime.
A clear picture emerged today as results of the 3,220 gram panchayats were declared. The LF won 1,585 GPs while the Opposition dramatically surged ahead notching up a victory in 1,498 GPs. The results in 137 GPs have been either a tie or hung.
The LF had won 2,303 GPs in the 2003 elections routing the Opposition which managed to bag only 897 GPs, whereas the number of GPs where the results were a tie or hung was only 20. The LF's lowest tally of GPs before was 56 per cent in 1998 and the highest 72 per cent in 1988. Its share ranged between 56 and 70 per cent during the six consecutive terms that it held sway over the panchayats.
The comfort that the CPI-M drew from its victory in 13 of the 17 Zilla Parishads when the results first started pouring in two days back, was eroded by serious worries yesterday when the Opposition won 89 panchayat samities against the LF tally of 189, showing that the ruling combine's grip on the rural vote bank was loosening.
But today, the illusory success in the ZPs turned into a nightmare with the GP results making it clear that nearly half the political space in rural Bengal ~ which has hitherto been the LF's mainstay ~ has been captured by the Opposition. The results sent such shock-waves down the spine of the CPI-M that its state leadership immediately started wooing the junior partners whom it had treated shabbily and insolently during the run-up to the poll.
State industries minister Mr Nirupam Sen was summoned to Alimuddin Street in the afternoon. It was the duo of Mr Sen and the chief minister who were the chief architects of the skewed industrialisation policy that has proved the LF's undoing in the rural poll.
The CPI-M state secretary and LF chairman, Mr Biman Bose, had even taunted that the junior partners saying that it was misplaced confidence that was spurring them.to seek a greater share of seats. But after the results were out, he held bilateral talks with leaders of the CPI and the Forward Bloc to soothe frayed nerve. The Left Front will review results on 27 May. (two paragraphs excluded)

Editorial
Foundational shock (http://thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=3&theme=&usrsess=1&id=205251)

Verdict with profound implications

The verdict is irrevocable, the shock numbing, and the jolt decidedly more severe than what it was after the assembly election of 2001. Very uniquely the outcome has been a double whammy; the Zilla Parishad result is a statement against the land acquisition for industry and murderous state-sponsored violence. In the panchayat samities and gram panchayats, the voter has raised his voice against the decrepit panchayati raj and such specifics as the collapse of the rationing system, the mishandling of the avian flu and the failure of the NREGA. Aside from bread and butter issues, it is the widening rift between the CPI-M and its partners that has done the party in, notably in the second and third tiers. The verdict is a testament to the measure of opposition unity at the grassroots level. In the net, the leadership's reluctance to comment is indication enough that the party and the government have been shaken to the foundations.
Decidedly more shocking for the Left has been the loss of the panchayat samities in as many as seven districts of South Bengal. This functionally critical tier goes out of Left control in close to half of the 17 districts. A vast swathe of South Bengal had borne the brunt of the rationing collapse and food riots last September. More recently these districts were afflicted by the avian flu that has ruined the poultries, a thriving segment of the rural economy.
Nandigram has rejected the Left exactly six months after its recapture. The outcome has had its impact on the industrial nerve-centre of Haldia as well and the likes of Lakshman Seth ought now to be headed for the political dump. Interlinked with land has been the communal factor with Muslims constituting an estimated 60 per cent of Nandigram's peasantry. The warning of a vote-bank erosion was sufficiently glaring as early as January 2007, yet a bullheaded party responded with counter-mobilisation of its cadres and with devastating effect.
As in East Midnapore, the standoffish arrogance that marked the acquisition of land in Singur is in shreds with the CPI-M losing all three Zilla Parishads to the Trinamul. The vote against the CPI-M in South 24-Parganas is the villagers' response to the invitation to the Salim Group of Indonesia to invest without bothering to examine the repercussion of land acquisition despite the alert sounded by the party's minister, Abdur Rezaak Mollah. Indeed, the Salim projects in the road sector and the increasing opposition to the acquisition notices have had an impact on North 24-Parganas as well where the CPI-M has won by a margin of three seats. Significantly, the proposed industrialisation of West Midnapore, Burdwan, Bankura and Purulia has had no impact on the fortunes of the party primarily owing to the arid nature of the soil.
No election since 1977 has yielded a verdict with such profound implications for the structure of rural Bengal ~ political, social and economic. Yet it would be premature to conclude in the manner of Mamata Banerjee that this is the "beginning of the end of the CPI-M", unless we take the philosophical view that every end is certain to have a beginning. That said, she has been prescient enough to realise the dichotomy of opposition-controlled panchayat samities and gram panchayats functioning under CPI-M Zilla Parishads in 13 of the 17 districts. __._,_.___

I am not sure   in which newspaper, but i am sure i read  in a report   in which Mannan bhua said , a fraction inside the  CTG is trying to finish him. But he was confident that his supporter fraction would win.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Disgraceful act of Saudi prince and Rupali Bank Sales Deal

Mr. chowdhury ,
For your information , Mahmudur rahman was not  involved with privatisation commission(PC), he was CEO of Board of investment(BOI).

I think you have messed up PC and  BOI.

You adjectives regarding Mahmudur rahman also reveal how much you are afaid of him in the opposiotion group of BAL.

There is no equivalant of  him in AL.

Shamim Chowdhury <veirsmill@yahoo.com> wrote:
Those who are responsible for this deal should be taken into account. Citizen has the right to know who these people are who coasted Bangladesh Tk 17 crore of public money.
Probably it was Mahmudur Rahman, one of the most controversial notorious people in four party alliance government who made the deal on behalf of incompetent four party coalition government.
This is just one more illustration of how the country was running under Jamaat-BNP government. Country's asset was considered as personal and given away hastily in exchange of bribe.
Undoubtedly, the disgraceful disgusting act of prince of Saudi Arabia also notable. We should black list these sorts of fake investors for future. How dare this prince of Saudi Arabia to write to the army chief of Staff Gen. Moeen about his new offer but not to the government. This shows his crude way of dealing through the backdoor.
In a recent letter to Chief of Army Staff Gen Moeen U Ahmed, the prince said he is now willing to pay only $185 million instead of the $456 million he had originally offered last year.

Rupali Bank Sales Deal

The Privatisation Commission (PC) wasted over Tk 17 crore of public money violating privatisation regulations in the process of making the now uncertain Rupali Bank sales deal with the Saudi prince.

The commission violated sub-section 16 of section (11-i) of Privatization Regulations 2001(Revised) by taking an amount as security deposit from the highest bidder Saudi prince, which was lesser than what it was supposed to take in accordance with the rules.

The commission received only US$100,000 as security deposit instead of the $8.25 million mandated by the PC regulations, as it stipulates that the amount of the security deposit should be a minimum of 2.5 percent of the total sale price.

If the PC followed the regulations it would receive over Tk 56 crore as security deposit from the Saudi prince as the buyer had agreed to buy the bank's 67 percent stake at a cost of US$330 million at the time of primary agreement, said a source in the ACC quoting from a primary investigation report regarding the matter.

Md Nurul Islam, deputy director of the ACC, conducted the primary investigation and submitted his report to the anti-graft commission recently, sources said.

The investigation also found that the PC arranged a series of high profile international road shows to sell the bank's shares spending Tk 17 crore, some of the venues for which were selected whimsically while some persons were also included in the team unnecessarily.

The commission showcased Rupali Bank's assets at the road show which travelled to Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Karachi, London and Dubai between March 12 and March 29 in 2006.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund also endorsed the road show, terming it as essential and unavoidable in an exercise of this nature.

Besides, the investigation report said the PC also got involved in misconducts in the selection process of potential buyers by declaring Summit Industrial Mercantile Corporation and JJ Finance as fit to participate in the bidding despite their not having the necessary funds.

The report also alleged although the advertisement of the expression of interest to sell the bank said 'companies who would participate in the bid should have as capital a minimum amount of US$100 million', the PC however declared the two companies fit which had only $7 million and $20 million as capital.

ACC Director General (Admin) Col Hanif Iqbal said the commission conducted the primary investigation regarding the issues and a report has already been submitted for consideration.

If the ACC approves the report and asks its officials to go into further investigation, then necessary steps will be taken in that direction, he added.

He said issues of violating privatisation regulations, the overpriced road show, and flaws in selecting qualified bidders were investigated.

The Saudi prince, who had agreed to buy Rupali Bank, slashed more than US$270 million off the amount he had originally been willing to pay for the state-owned enterprise, claiming he had been misled about the size of the bad debts the bank has.

In a recent letter to Chief of Army Staff Gen Moeen U Ahmed, the prince said he is now willing to pay only $185 million instead of the $456 million he had originally offered last year.

The government that owns 94 percent of Rupali Bank's shares decided to sell 67 percent of its shares in order to appease the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, who had imposed reforms in the banking sector as a condition for granting loans to the government.

The total amount of assets of Rupali Bank as showed in December 2005 stood at $1.07 billion with over 493 branches across the country.

[mukto-mona] Fwd. A good judge of art "ancient erotic art has been religious in character"

Subject: Nude art and erotic Rumi
Date: 5/23/2008 6:12:23 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time
From:

Kalim

Towards the end of our recent visit to Rome, Florence and Venice someone commented about the Roman art " The statues need a lot of clothing to look civil."  Rumi is very explicit in erotic story telling so much that when Prof Nicholson translated six volumes of Masnavi he expleted erotic stories. Those have now seen the light of the day for English readers by a masterful rendition by Coleman Bark. Masnavi is aptly called Masnavi Shareef or "Quraan in Farsi". I wonder how those pages of Masnavi  escaped the scissors of Mullah and how and why it remained a core subject taught in religious schools.

You will enjoy this piece.

Jawed Naavi

A good judge of art

By Jawed Naqvi

DURING the BJP regime, a couple of men, including a gun-toting officer of the Indian army, successfully disrupted a mushaira at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University where Pakistan's Fahmida Riaz was reciting her poem that mocked religious fundamentalism in both countries.

Tum bilkul hum jaisey nikle, ab tak kahaan chhupe thay bhaai?

Wo ghaamadpan, wo jaahilpan jisme humne sadi gawaai

Ab pahonchi hai dwaar tumharey? Arey badhai, bahot badhai!

(You too, my Indian friend? Welcome to the club

We had put up with ignorant fools for decades

Now you are the hub

May I greet you for losing your way?

Should my hands with glee I rub?)

Fahmida had barely started when all hell broke loose. She is a traitor, she is anti-India, she hates Hindus, throw the Pakistani out. As the shouts became deafening, the shaken poet was spirited out from a backdoor to a secure hotel. Earlier this month, a landmark judgment by Delhi High Court's Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul may have retrieved some of the ground (and face) for India's threatened secular ideals.

The judgment quashed three lower court summons against the 92-year old artist Maqbool Fida Husain. The artist has been living in exile because Hindu zealots filed petitions in different parts of the country against his paintings, describing them as obscene because they showed their gods and goddesses in the nude. Justice Kaul described the petitions as harassment.

But before we come to the flourishes from Justice Kaul's 70-page poetry of a judgment, the point of view of Fahmida Riaz needs to be understood.

Most Indians have no clue about the travails of artists, singers, actors and dancers in Pakistan, nor are they really aware about their heroic struggles against religious bigotry that is often enough fomented by the state. The trauma that great artists like Sadequain suffered, for example, at the hands of the mullahs is not widely known here, nor dancer Sheema Kermani's war against religious decrees.

The fact that the virus has found a home in India is even more worrying. Religious fascism patronised under Pakistan's military dictatorships could be isolated and fought more easily than if it got the patronage of a parliamentary democracy like ours. The home ministry under the watch of the supposedly secular Congress party is said to have issued directives to police commissioners to proscribe Husain's paintings rather than to pursue his communal tormentors.

This is more or less what we did with Taslima Nasrin too, eventually hounding out the exiled Bangladeshi writer who had sought refuge here with hope and faith in the Indian constitution. There is one more common element between the Indian and Pakistani variants of zealotry.

When Pakistan was plunging headlong into medievalism under Ziaul Haq, it was the United States that stood by him. In India, too, religious zealots who are generously given state support make the best allies of the United States. Check this out: the common element in the spread of religious revivalism in both countries is the caring hand of the US, which stokes the fires of zealotry, possibly as a foil to godless communism.

The high court judge began by quoting Pablo Picasso, which effectively set the stage for his arriving conclusions, "Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is dangerous. Where it is chaste, it is not art."Justice Kaul's inference was equally emphatic.

He wrote as only an art historian would: "Art, to every artist, is a vehicle for personal expression…. Ancient Indian art has never been devoid of eroticism where sex worship and graphical representation of the union of man and woman has been a recurring feature…. The ultimate essence of a work of ancient erotic art has been religious in character and can be enunciated as a state of heightened delight or ananda, the kind of bliss that can be experienced only by the spirit."

The judge's comments on contemporary art in India were not for the narrow minded. "Today Indian art is confidently coming of age," he wrote. "Every form of stylistic expression in the visual arts, from naturalism to abstract expressionism derives its power from the artist's emotional connection to his perceptual reality. The nude in contemporary art, a perennial art subject, considered to be the greatest challenge in art has still not lost its charm and focuses on how the human form has been reinterpreted by emerging and influential artists today."

The painting that has offended some, observed the judge, "depicts India as an abstract and graphical representation of a woman in nude with her hair flowing in the form of the Himalayas displaying her agony." But the artist did not call it Bharat Mata or Mother India. In the final analysis, the judge could, however, quash just three of the 10 cases against Husain because those three dealt directly with court summons issued to him.

The other cases, all transferred to be heard in Delhi, could be investigated and thrown out by the government if it so chooses. But that would require Delhi's Congress government to confront the Hindutva worldview, something its leaders look unprepared for.

Going through scores of similar cases from many countries, and including brilliant observations by eminent judges in India such as Justice Krishna Iyer, the high court judgment asked for help from the legislature to enact laws "keeping in mind the balancing of interests between the person aggrieved and the accused so as to prevent harassment of artists, sculptors, authors, filmmakers etc. in different creative fields".

But where does this leave M.F. Husain, who is biding his time in Dubai for fear of arrest if he returns? There are still the seven cases pending against him after all. "A liberal tolerance of a different point of view causes no damage," concluded Justice Kaul, signalling his intent.

"A debate should never be shut out. 'I am right' does not necessarily imply 'You are wrong'. Our culture breeds tolerance — both in thought and in actions. I have penned down this judgment with this fervent hope that it is a prologue to broader thinking and greater tolerance for the creative field. A painter at 90 deserves to be in his home — painting his canvasses!"

Justice Kaul's verdict can become the keystone to rebuild India's secular edifice, retrieving its image from the rubble of Ayodhya and Gujarat. But fascism cannot be defeated by the efforts of an enlightened judge alone. It needs both political courage and resolve, something that Fahmida Riaz found missing. n

[mukto-mona] Pakistan-Christian...Jailed on 'Blasphemy', Algeria- Christian Convert

 1) Pakistan:

Christian Doctor Jailed on'Blasphemy' Charges

PAKISTAN: DOCTOR JAILED ON 'BLASPHEMY' CHARGES

Police rescue Christian from angry mob.

Dr. Robin Sardar (Courtesy SLMP)ISTANBUL, May 16 (Compass Direct News) – Pakistani police have jailed a Christian doctor after "blasphemy" charges incited a mob attack on his home last week in Punjab province.

Officials said Dr. Robin Sardar is being held in Punjab's Gujranwala Central Jail. His wife and six children have left their home in the town of Chak Chatta, 200 miles southeast of Islamabad.

"This is the house of a blasphemer," reads a sign on the gates of Sardar's now empty home where a crowd of angry villagers gathered on May 5, Union of Catholic Asia News (UCAN) reported. The group bore sticks and kerosene and chanted death threats against the doctor, family members told Sharing Life Ministries Pakistan (SLMP), a Christian prison ministry.

"A huge number of Muslims wearing green turbans surrounded our house, most of them armed with weapons and wooden sticks," Sardar's wife told SLMP. "They were shouting 'The punishment of the blasphemer is death.'"

She said that police arrived at the house after several hours and used a ladder to climb the property wall and transport Sardar to safety.

District Coordination Officer Ibrar Mirza confirmed that police had rescued Sardar from an angry mob.

"When people are a bit incited, they can do anything," Mirza said.

Local Christians said that the incident began when a Muslim vendor filed a blasphemy complaint with police on May 4 against the Christian doctor. Sardar and the vendor had reportedly clashed over whether the merchant could set up shop in front of the doctor's clinic.

But a May 4 First Information Report (FIR) filed by the vendor, Muhammad Rafique, claimed that Sardar had insulted Islam's prophet Muhammad during a friendly visit between the two men two days prior.

"[Sardar] began preaching about Christianity, saying bad words against the prophet Muhammad," Rafique said in the written testimony given to police. "He also compared the prophet Muhammad's beard with the beard of a Sikh."

At this, Rafique and several friends came to blows with Sardar and attempted to force him to apologize, the FIR stated.

But Sardar denied having said anything against Muhammad.

In his written statement, Rafique called for the doctor to receive capital punishment and threatened that local Muslims would riot if police did not arrest the Christian.

Under article 295-c of Pakistan's penal code, blasphemy against Muhammad merits death.

Now in hiding with relatives at an undisclosed location, Sardar's wife Veenas said she could not return home for fear of new attacks. Neighbors have told her that members of local Islamist groups have threatened to kill Sardar if he is acquitted.

Dr. Sardar's wife, Veenas (SLMP)"If Dr. Robin embraced Islam along with his family, he could come back," neighbors told Sardar's wife by telephone on May 7, according to the Lahore-based Center for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement.

Two other Christian doctors in the area expressed concern that anger over the blasphemy case might incite anger against Christians.

"Nowadays I shut down my clinic as it's quite possible that angry Muslims set it alight," Dr. Shamaun Mughal, Sardar's nephew, told SLMP. "Even the Muslim children became highly fanatic, abusing Christians in the streets and calling Dr. Robin a dog and demanding to hang him to death."

But local police downplayed the existence of any danger for Sardar's family or other Christians in the area.

"We have plenty of Christian community in this district, and everyone is safe," Mirza told Compass by telephone from Hafizabad.

Mirza said that the mob at Sardar's home had been at most 50 people and called eyewitness accounts of a 1,000-strong crowd "exaggerated."
Though he refused to comment on the legitimacy of the blasphemy charges against Sardar, Mirza said that blasphemy cases had at times been fabricated to target specific individuals.

Ten years prior, on May 6, 1998, Pakistani Catholic Bishop John Joseph committed suicide to protest both the use and abuse of Pakistan's blasphemy laws.

Speaking from a memorial mass in Faisalabad, Father Aftab James Paul, director of the diocesan Commission for Interfaith Dialogue, said Sardar was accused because he was a well off Christian doctor.

"Basically, two types of Christians are accused in blasphemy cases, those who are too poor to defend themselves and those with high living standards," he told UCAN. "Settling of personal scores and jealousy are the main driving forces behind both types."

ALGERIA: FIRST TRIAL AGAINST A CHRISTIAN CONVERT

(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS, MAY 21 - For the first time in Algeria a trial against an Algerian woman converted to Christianity was launched yesterday in Tiaret (400 km west of Algiers).

The woman was accused of having "practised a non-Muslim prayer without authorisation". In fact, the girl was not arrested while praying, but on a bus and because of some gospels that she had with her. "The charge however is not for proselytism, for the first time," daily El Watan writes adding "the liberty to practice freely the Christian faith is really brought into question".

According to the daily, Habiba, under 30 and converted to Christianity for four years, would not renounce her religion just to avoid the court. "Either it is the mosque or the court," Tiaret's prosecutor intimidated her during the first conversation, as El Watan writes. "Did they make you drink from the water which will carry you straight to paradise?", the judge in court asked yesterday.

Habiba was arrested on a bus heading to Oran. The police discovered in her backpack twelve religious books. The girl defended herself saying that these were personal texts and were not intended for other people. The Religious Affairs Ministry instituted a civil action and the prosecutor demanded yesterday a three-year prison sentence.

The sentence will be pronounced on Tuesday. Together with the woman, another six members of Tiaret's Christian community accused of proselytism will stand trial. (ANSAmed).
