[mukto-mona] Congratulations to the people of Nepal

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48478

Congratulations to the People of Nepal.
It seems all nations of the world are happy, except the United States of
America. What is their plan? Anyway, if US choose to be adventurous, they
will be in trouble.

Thank you all.

[mukto-mona] Reconciling Science and Religion: My response to Mr. Avijit Roy.

28MAY2008
Dear Moderator, MM. Please consider posting the following in MM forum. Thanks. MG (USA).
**********************************************************************************************************************************************************

Reconciling Science and Religion: My response to Mr. Avijit Roy.

Mohammad Gani (USA).

I must thank you for taking this complex issue with interest and importance; especially on my view points. I pretty much have responded to your write up earlier; now it is the follow up for the Mukto-Mona readers and a new posting in NFB, as my response to your posting there.  First of all, we are not engaged in any argument and as I understand; you are only bringing up some logical persuasions to convince our readers with the rhetoric's of poetic theories from Astrophysics and that I am coalescing science and God to co-exist. Is all our rhetoric only logical lies or logical truth? The readers shall come up with their own disposition at their free will.

Here we are looking for the truth, the only truth and nothing but the truth about the existence of God; and during this process, exchanging turbulent views shall not take us any near to a suspense point in disproving the existence of God; regardless how superior the logics are .

I knew of a professor entering to his classroom, then picking up his chair and placing it on his table. He then asked the students to prove that "This chair on the table does not exist!". Students started writing pages after pages on their logical arguments during 90 minutes class except one student who took only 10 second to respond and submit. Almost all students received D grade. The one who responded with 2 words in 10 seconds received an "A"! His  response (answer) was "What chair?" I admired his (student) intelligent logical mind though in reality this chair does exist!

The beauty of the logical discussions is that more often it is truly amazing and visibly convincing too but in this complex situation, it is ending up absolutely without any merit of reality. Let me give you another example. Consider a democratic election process of a public office for a "Public physician". If a politician and a physician are the candidates for this position and that these 2 are scheduled for a debate in a public gathering; the doctor would utterly be eclipsed by the rhetoric and art of craftsmanship of the politician that shall make him win that election against all opposition including the physician. That does not mean that the politician is a better physician than the doctor himself. But we all know what exactly the absolute truth is.

Our intelligence, wisdom and knowledge from astrophysics combined simply fail to reach to the whole truth in disproving the existence of God. Also, the overall philosophy of science has given me the understanding to believe that it is not within Astrophysics realm to prove or to disprove God and I believe in limitation of human imaginations and science's intervention to infinite universe that moving fast to infinite time and space. This concept, I mean "infinite and space" is not precisely defined in science yet either. Our Astrophysics is sophomoric and more poetic that has not come up with any (applied) empirical /scientific evidence supporting all its theories on Universe and Space. Thus, Astrophysics is merely like Tagore's Art of unscientific love and eternity and we can not compare these theories with the science of other kind like thermodynamics, mathematics or any other applied science.

The philosophy of science has its own course and is certainly not to disprove the existence of God as we proudly and intelligently bring about. Science itself is silent in resolving the puzzles and mystery of origin and pre-origin state of super Space (all universes) that still remained a mystery, way beyond human imagination. What are available today, as you have referenced are only theories. Before the big bang, there was always "something, somewhere' and not to be able recognize it is truly unscientific and theories of Astrophysics are frivolous defense from our ignorance and failure. However, this failure should not lead to any absolute disposition towards determination of non-existence of God. Creator has not perhaps given us the ability of consuming and exploring his all mystery.

As I have mentioned earlier, something "infinite size" would never support motion to "infinite space". If so, all laws of our existence would be absolutely/ridiculously incompatible.  Big Bang started from a huge dense "object". It also states that the "object" (?) is infinitely dense and has no (zero) volume, known as singularity. Now, how was this "dense object", say mass and/or energy created at the beginning, (if there was beginning before Big bang) and how could we prove or disprove our theory that mass/energy will remain constant? Yes, at one point and only one point it could be possible when Mass and/or Energy could be created at a singularity because all physical laws that could break them (crunch) down at a singularity. That is why we could only predict what happened in the universe immediately after the Big Bang but we do not know what happened at the instant of creation.

Astrophysics could not pass through the singularity to find out what happened before the Big Bang. Mysteries on singularities (more than one) are not over yet either. Singularities still exist today at the heart of black holes. A startling latest finding is that our cosmos may very well be able to reproduce itself through the functioning of Black Holes. Astrophysicists now explain that the bursting out of our universe in the Big Bang is the time-reversed mirror image of the collapse of a massive object into a Black Hole. Many of the Black Holes that form in our universe may thus represent the seeds of new universes with new "mini Big Bang" in them, collapsing the Black Holes themselves. Instead of a Black Hole representing a one way journey to nowhere, many researchers now believe (No proof) that it is a one-way journey to somewhere; to a new expanding universe in its own set of dimensions (Continuous and series of Big Bangs). The dramatic conclusion is that our own Universe may well have been born in this way out of a Black Hole in another universe! Isn't it a true puzzle, I mean a baby Universe inside a daddy Universe! Cool, but not that refreshing!

You see, Einstein was developing his theory of relativity 100 years ago; he considered the universe a static, unchanging system no larger than the cloud of stars that we now know to be only our galaxy. Today, we know that the universe is expanding rapidly and contains at least 50 billion galaxies, each with 100 billion or more stars. When our cosmos blossomed into existence from an area smaller than a pinpoint some 12 billion years ago, it indeed emerged out of "somewhere". Our modern physics has begun to ONLY speculate on the nature of this generative ground.

You have mentioned, "…..but that just raises the question of where the energy came from? The answer is that the total energy of the universe is exactly zero. ……that, in quantum theory, particles can be created out of energy in the form of particle/antiparticle pairs. The matter in the universe is made out of positive energy. However, the matter is all attracting itself by gravity. Two pieces of matter that are close to each other have less energy than the same two pieces a long way apart, because you have to expend energy to separate them against the gravitational force that is pulling them together. Thus, in a sense, the gravitational field has negative energy. In the case of a universe that is approximately uniform in space, one can show that this negative gravitational energy exactly cancels the positive energy represented by the matter. So the total energy of the universe is zero".

My response: Energy concept, Big Bang and Entropy relationship; 2nd law of thermodynamics that says the equality holds for a reversible process and the inequality holds for irreversible process means that if some energy (heat) is converted entirely to work, some other must be rejected or lost to the surroundings while the 1st law only denies the possibility of creating or destroying energy. In our practical applications, Entropy is a clever mathematical technique of balancing the energy (Heat) of a system that widely used by scientist and engineers. This unavailable energy, also known as Entropy is real and does exist "somewhere" after the escape from a "system" though Engineers care less where it does go at certain point. The absolute entropy is a measure of "energy" that is no longer available to perform useful work within the current environment but not equals to zero energy. Unavailable Energy (Entropy) can not be concluded as equals to "does not exist" though its whereabouts is unknown to us. If this accumulated entropy could have caused the Big Bang, say it did; then these "unavailable energy" or Entropy did exist before the Big Bang!  Now, who put this energy into the system or what exactly caused the Big bang is not explained by science yet? Combining "Negative and Positive energy" did not sum up to zero energy, instead produced only " energy" as we clearly see around us everyday except that matter/antimatter (also energy) have only been complying physical laws of Universe and our existence with appropriate manipulation. The best explanation could be zero volume but not zero energy! Now, who manipulated this process of Big Bang to satisfy Newton's 1st law of motion?

Zero volume and infinite density mass (or energy, you mentioned) concept: Indeed zero volume is dimensionless (say "nothing" here) but infinite "density" is NOT dimensionless, thus physically did exist before the Big Bang. You are obviously correct that "mass/matter" came out from energy after Big Bang but the energy itself did not came out from nothing, just violating law of science only ONCE 13 billions years ago; energy has always been there all the way to the "end" or to the "no end" .

Now "where did God come from?"  God is always seen as an eternal being and therefore had no beginning.  To begin at some point is to "not be eternal". Many religious theologians think of God existing outside of time and space and therefore outside of our universe, thus is not subject to its laws or logic. I was looking for some ideas about the nature of those that lies outside of our FINITE existence and then came to the belief in God by a long process of overcoming obstacles in my mind.  I believe in "faith" but am disappointed at the way others use the word to mean that "faith" comes as an esoteric or ontological leap into the unknown where reason has failed. I have always believed that God exists and the evidence as I have observed indicates that He cannot but exist and it must logically follow that His intention was rooted in our relationship with Him. We do have an intuitive connection with the creator (God), universe and our capacity to use our intuition is still in its infancy given our early stage of learning. An empathic connection with the universe is nothing special; it is built into the systems of the cosmos. Our physical body does not stop at the edge of our skin, in stead extends into and is inseparable from the universe. Consciousness is found at every level of the cosmos and is not confined only within our brains, but extends beyond the body and can meaningfully interact with the rest of the universe in both sending and receiving communications. Our cosmos is responsive, conscious and alive as we are! Thus it is reasonable to believe in the existence of a mental component of the universe. If we believe in this mental component of the universe, then we can say that we are small pieces of God's mental apparatus.

If God was to personally appear before us, in any form that was spectacular enough to convince us all that it was really Him. Then, we wouldn't really have any real choice about following Him. We know we had to. And when there is no choice, there is no opportunity for love. And that is what probably He wants. I have seen the recent debates over intelligent design versus evolution. The "finite" realities that are open and available for examination from the information contained in DNA, from the irreducible complexities in microbiology to the microwave background radiation have only contributed to some kind of logical conclusion of our world view that provides the unified field of knowledge offering only a totality of human experience.

Scientists do not know the dimension and/or area or existence of anything outside the "space and time" and its effects (if any) in explaining the "uncaused first cause" (Big Bang) as not being subject to cause and effect due to the fact that the creation event was not so much initiated within a sequential reality of our time and space but by an intelligence to will existence without all those applies to finite states. It is truly amazing to imagine that agents of intellectual capacities bound by the terms and theories of FINITE existence can really know the characteristics OUTSIDE our Time and Space! Very interesting but difficult to comprehend.

Our childhood, boyhood and perhaps youth have been different from our today's "adult mind" about God, religion and science that changed with circumstantial elements and variables.  But these changes can not be absolute as well as one directional; instead are multi-directional systems in a complex system with billions of variables. Anything like Buckingham pie theorem or Reynolds's Numbers (Re) like dimensionless groups/ analyses have not yet been performed to set a standard yardstick on the complexities of those billions of unknown variables. Our "common sense" judgment can never resolve these complex issue.

Many people thought that Darwin's theory of evolution shall put an end of religions. But religious faith and concepts still holds sway over minds of billions of people throughout the world those believe that every words in Holy books are God's truth. I would not say that you have been brutally hostile only to the Quran, you are indeed equally or even more brutal to Hinduism or to other religions too. But what surprises me is your outbursts of emotion in desperately and aggressively ridiculing God and being cruel to Him when you say " Evil God does not exist". It indeed reflects the weakness of your frustrating mind in accepting your failure easily and not being able to close the issue with disposition in your favor/choice. Unfortunately, I do not foresee any prospect of arriving there anytime soon.  I recognize your rights to say whatever you want say or the way want to say and you actually did too but calling God as "Evil God" was not that much necessary.

My last leg lands by telling you the following story on our "instant state of mind" over "true state of mind" during unforeseen circumstances. You could call it only chemical imbalance of our brain. But chemical imbalance is real, scientific and thus true too! But when and which is exactly the "true state" of our mind is still a debatable issue. Here is the story;

"An atheist was walking through the woods, admiring all that the  "accidents" that evolution had created. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he thought to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. Turning to look, he saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked  over his shoulder and saw the grizzly was still behind him. So he ran even faster, so scared that tears came to his eyes. He looked again and the bear was even closer.

His heart was pounding and he tried to run faster. He tripped and fell to the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up and saw the bear right over him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his  right paw to strike. At that instant, the atheist cried out, "Oh my God...!"

Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving.

A bright light shone upon the man and a voice came out of the sky. It was the Lord. "You deny My existence for all these years, teach others that I don't exist and even credit creation to a cosmic accident?" He thundered from the sky. "Do you expect Me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"

The atheist looked directly into the light. "I know it would be hypocritical to ask for Your help after all these years," he said, "but perhaps you could make the bear religious?"

"Very well," said the Lord. "I shall make the bear religious."
The light went out. Time resumed. The river ran. The sounds of the forest came alive again.

And the bear drew back, put both his front paws together and bowed his head in prayer: "Lord, for this food which I am about to receive, I am truly thankful................!!"

[This is my last response on this subject].

Dear Mr. Subimal Chakrabarti
Have well-wishing. Actually it was me who sent the comment. I would request you to to be patient until May 30, while I finish my article. But, whatever knowledgeable a person be, might happen to have a loss of information for any reason. That does not show his ignorance. The word ignorance has a wide meaning. I have respect for him.

[ALOCHONA] AP - Plight of migrant workers blemishes Dubai's image

Plight of migrant workers blemishes Dubai's image

By HAMZA HENDAWI,

Associated Press Writer

Sun May 25, 1:50 PM ET

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080525/ap_on_re_mi_ea/towers_of_tears&printer=1;_ylt=AkHMuMOt0ScwF_Vcv35_b.kUewgF

The 22 men in "trailer 10" work the morning shift at a construction site, then take turns shopping, cooking and cleaning. They pray together. When one returns to India on leave, he carries family presents and cash for the others.

"We all come from the Punjab" in northern India, said Pavinder Singh, a 42-year-old carpenter from the trailer in a camp that houses about 3,000 workers on the desert outskirts of Dubai. "But what makes us like a family is what we have to endure here together."

Dubai's astonishing building boom, which has made it one of the world's fastest growing cities, has been fueled by the labor of about 700,000 immigrants — almost all from poor villages in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Their meager wages still go far in their native lands. Two or three years in Dubai could mean building a house for their family, buying a plot of land or sending children to school. Yet many men escape poverty back home only to find themselves trapped in near-servitude here.

Human rights groups have for years decried the harsh conditions of foreign laborers in Dubai and the rest of the United Arab Emirates and oil-rich Persian Gulf. But the problem only drew widespread attention after strikes by thousands of workers this year and last. Some recent protests turned violent; in mid-March, police arrested at least 500 South Asian workers who smashed office windows and set cars ablaze in the small, neighboring emirate of Sharjah.

Dubai officials were embarrassed by the bad press in a city that advertises itself as a world business hub, playground for the rich and home to major horse races and golf and tennis tournaments. But despite promises of reform, there are still problems, The Associated Press found in interviews with government officials and two dozen workers and visits to employer-provided housing:

_Many South Asian workers are essentially indentured servants, borrowing heavily to pay recruitment agents for jobs. They can spend several years paying back debts that can run $3,000 or more, while earning between $150 and $300 a month, lately weakened by a falling dollar and Dubai's double-digit inflation.

_They work a 60-hour week, with one day off or even just half a day.

_Employers often confiscate their passports, in violation of Dubai law, and withhold pay for two or three months to stop workers from quitting.

_Many have no medical insurance and work outdoors in summer heat of 120 degrees Fahrenheit and stifling humidity.

_Employer-provided housing often means bare, crowded trailers behind barbed wire or on Dubai's desert fringes. Some are not connected to water or sewage grids.

Overall, human rights groups say, unscrupulous employers and government indifference have combined to create one of the world's worst cases of systematic exploitation.

Officials insist they have taken steps to ensure regulations are followed at construction sites and living quarters.

"Our role is to make sure that what has been promised is what is actually paid," said Alex Zalami, a senior adviser to the Emirates' Labor Ministry. "The companies want to maximize profits. And what we do is teach them that productivity improves if conditions improve for workers."

He said a draft law soon to go before the Cabinet will allow the government to reject applications for importing workers from companies with a record of violations, force builders to improve conditions or face increased fines, and shut down repeat offenders.

Authorities have since January made companies put workers' wages in bank accounts that can be monitored. Workers for major building companies have been given ATM cards to collect wages on work sites.

But Dubai officials acknowledge they still face obstacles.

One is persuading construction companies to make changes while maintaining the phenomenal growth of a sector worth about $400 billion in projects this year. Another is a shortage of labor inspectors — there are 400 now, almost twice as many as last year but well short of the target of 2,000. It's also difficult to build new camps with enough space and hygiene because of soaring land prices, officials say.

Workers can sue in court against employers who miss wages — but it seldom results in payment.

Badri Prasad Sharma, a 39-year-old mason from India's state of Rajasthan, has worked in Dubai since 1995. He paid the marriage dowries of five sisters with his Dubai wages, but then began to have trouble with his employers over missed salary payments.

Sharma took his employer to a labor court, which ruled in his favor in November. According to court documents, the Emirati-owned company was ordered to pay him 20,612 dirhams ($5,725) and air fare back to India — far above the 16,000 dirhams ($4,444) his lawyer sued for.

But the company appealed, and now Sharma survives on odd jobs and loans while awaiting a ruling.

Yet many workers are unwilling to go home and face the shame of returning empty-handed.

"I had another image of this place before I came," said Kulwinder Singh, a lanky 23-year-old mason who arrived in Dubai three months ago hoping to save $,7,000 for the dowries of two sisters. He lives in trailer 10.

"The camp here is worse than anything I have seen back home," he said. "It makes me mad to think about this, but there is no other place for me to go."

The 40-foot-by-13-foot trailer is filled with bunk beds, cooking pots, cardboard boxes of onions, potatoes and cauliflower, and a makeshift shrine with images of a holy man from the Sikh faith and of an Indian nationalist hanged by British colonial rulers in 1931.

The two blackened air conditioners do little against the summer heat. The floor has a large hole, and the men said the roof leaks rain. Water, brought into the camp by tankers, runs out frequently.

The men rise before dawn, start work at 7 a.m. and stop at 5:30 p.m. They make a 45-minute bus journey home, wait in line to shower, then cook, eat and go to bed at 11 p.m.

"There is no point in being angry because it will not make things any better," Pavinder Singh, the trailer group's informal leader, said as he lounged on his bed one recent Friday afternoon.

On Fridays, they work half a day and spend the afternoon washing clothes, watching DVDs of Bollywood movies, calling home and shopping at a nearby supermarket catering to Asian workers. Some Indians and Sri Lankans play cricket on a dirt patch, most barefooted or wearing plastic sandals.

"It's the only ground we have," shouted one player when asked about the rough field.

Belberdhas Devadassan said he was happy to be earning money to someday build a house in southern India. Yet the 23-year-old mason helping build Burj Dubai — already the world's tallest building — lamented he was away from family in his best years.

"But I have to do this. ... If I stay home, I will have no future," he said. "I plan to be here for another six years and when I am done, I will have what I need."

I see you upset. What's the matter? Mother's Day is your day. It has passed, but they didn't honor you. Shame on them for their short-sightedness. The holiday is for them only because of their genetic supremacy which obsesses them and decays their minds. You're standing alone on the balcony. Why? Did they impose deadly isolation on you? This holiday is for you. You left your family and children and came to land of cedars and trifles to make a living. Sri Lankan Maid in Lebanon, how great your suffering, and how unfair your oppressors. Undoubtedly the contradiction between their slogans and their practice disgusts you. Do you sense anguish when you listen to their speeches? March 14 talks about freedom, but they know not what freedom is and they're hostile to it in actual practice. Why do you approach the edge of the balcony? Do the depths beckon you? I fear for your destiny and the destiny of all foreign maids in Lebanon.

Every week we hear about a Sri Lankan or Ethiopian maid throwing herself off a balcony. We hear about maids hanging themselves with sheets or blankets or ropes. The news passes casually, without condemnation or demand for investigation. In some newspapers, these events are reason for jesting and joking, as Egyptians say. The Security Council is held for "he who supposes that his wealth makes him immortal," not for you. You do not have private jets to impress the petty or to show to the Counsel General of the Arab League or Terje Roed-Larsen (UN Special Representative). You're modest but not inferior.

Sri Lankan maid in Lebanon, how great your suffering and how heavy your worries. Do you hear those in 8 and 14 March speak about the advantages and disadvantages of skin color with blatant racism? The leaders and the educated in 8 and 14 March easily say: "we're not Somalia," or "we're not Kenya." Samir Frenja, who we're told is to the left of 14 March, constantly boasts of a Lebanon distinguished from African "un-enlightenment." They don't know they're of African-Asian descent, even if they do the impossible to appease the white man. They believe they're of the white race and nothing obsesses them more than flattering the white man politically and socially. This explains why they allow the American ambassador in Lebanon to issue opinions about the Parliament and the constitution without objection from any party. They think the white man's concern for them, which is classic colonial concern, is evidence of their sophistication. This explains why both sides allowed Terje Roed-Larsen (Israel and the United States' envoy to the United Nations) to discuss issues related to electoral rules and ticket structure. If he were Black, he would've been deported from their country.

What goes on in your mind while you listen to their blatant, unmistakable racism? They fearlessly and shamelessly insult ethnicities, the poor and Blacks. They don't even try to mask their racism. On the contrary, they display it because they think it morally enhances them. Do you see them avoiding touching you? Of course, they think you're sexually available for their sons' or fathers' desires. They rape you regularly and your self-defense angers them. Is this why we periodically read about Sri Lankan and Ethiopian maids' suicide in Lebanon? If Sri Lankan maids' periodic suicides were investigated, the facts would become clear and those deemed respectable in society would be exposed as rapists and harrassers and batterers. Didn't they desecrate you? They desecrate you in the homeland of hollow slogans. To whom can you complain? To whom can you unload your burdens? To police stations which share society's racism and classism? To the Ministry of Interior which has become a branch of a militia owned by a rich family the House of Saud implanted in Lebanon?

Suicide

I will never forget Sushar Roxi. Do you remember her? That poor Sri Lankan maid who died by hanging in front of spectators and cameras. Do you remember when the city of Sidon's people woke up to find her dangling from the balcony, after she'd hanged herself with linens? Do you wonder why she hanged herself? Do you wish you could ask her? She dangled from the balcony for hours and nobody noticed or cared. Why did Sushar hang from the balcony and why do we never hear of investigations? She committed suicide in the morning's early hours and nobody investigated what happened to her the previous night. Every time, the police arrives and the family opines that the victim missed her family and hence committed suicide. The case is closed, assuming one had been opened in the first place. Police arrive to pay lip service. The Lebanese gentleman and lady – do you notice how concerned they are with titles? – do with you whatever they want? Everyone obtains a title and you sometimes find those who don't respond if addressed without a title. They're gentlemen, ladies, beyks and complexes who walk the earth. The police reiterate that you're depressed due to homesickness. And you hang from the balcony for hours without anyone of conscience caring. The three large communities' congresses convene every month and discuss all subjects, even the border conflict between Ecuador and Columbia, but they don't talk about you. Even the Communist Party doesn't talk about you in its statements. Perhaps they're influenced by Karl Marx's classist divisions, as he probably viewed you as the "lumpen proteriat" (we have read in Marx's biography by Francis Wayne that his record of treating his family's housemaid wasn't exactly taintless).

Sri Lankan maid in Lebanon, how abominable your fate in your deadly homesickness. You made a grave mistake by coming to our country. This is a country obsessed with pleasing the white man and you occupy the country's lowermost rung of the class and ethnic totem pole. They disallow you from sitting at their dining tables. They've never heard of the emancipation of slaves. They buy slaves and concubines by bringing a foreign maid to their houses. The maid is necessary in order to teach children the principles of racism, classicism and hatred. You're necessary for the Lebanese notion. I see you indifferent about contests between 8 and 14 March. They're equally racist against you.

Absent Media

Do you dream of going home? Does the earth collapse beneath your feet? What's the harm if you leave our land? Your pursuit of income brought you to this openly racist and classist country. If they could have it their way, they never would've enacted a law against slavery. They're slave masters because they think it brings them closer to the white man. I see you sullen on your holiday. It's your holiday. You crossed oceans to bring income for your family in Sri Lanka. You deserve two Mother's Days, not one. You care for your own children in Sri Lanka and also the children of the middle and bourgeois classes. Don't you cringe when some families insist that you wear servants' uniform? In Lebanon they're influenced by the western movies they're watched about the era of colonialism and slavery, so forgive them. Or don't. They feel their social status would skyrocket if the neighbors saw you wearing your distinct uniform. These are traditional Lebanese methods of climbing the class and social ladder.

Sri Lankan maid in Lebanon, you're so absent from the media. Only Carol Mansour in her film "Worker/Industry in Lebanon" sought to tell your story to an audience that doesn't care. If the movie were about pursuing the "wa-wa" (a popular song by Lebanese singer Haifa Wehbe) or the Saudi Janadriyah festival, the entire country would've watched it and bestowed awards. But the film's discourse was addressed to a western audience as if the west would care and arrive in a Cole battleship to liberate you. The west doesn't care about you in spite of its slogans and freedom from class and ethnic repression and sexual enslavement. The skillful Nancy Al-Sab' recently investigated your political opinions and did so with immense respect. But the media hardly mentions foreign maids' suicide in Lebanon. Western human rights organizations are too busy attending to the rockets that have poured on Israel during its aggression towards Lebanon and liberal organizations in Lebanon are excused. They don't see any human rights violations besides the arrest of Michel Kilo. Racism against the Syrian people, the Palestinian people and Lebanon's Shia has a history of providing housemaids that predates the war. The Lebanese do not understand how they could be equated with those who provide them with housemaids. They're the most ardent believers of rigid ethnic and class hierarchy. That's why they order you to stand while they loiter in cafes. They order you to walk behind them while they walk smugly in their streets. Didn't employment offices in Sri Lanka warn you about this country's racism?

When the Lebanese gather in the sectarian expression plaza in Beirut for sectarian protests, doesn't their speech of freedom bother you? Doesn't their hypocrisy anger you as they steadfastly praise freedom during the day only to return to their houses to exercise repression and violence against you? Even the feminists of the society that considers itself sophisticated, don't you hear their talk about their festivities only to return home to scold you for the silliest reasons? They talk about women's rights and they only mean bourgeois women's rights just like the American feminist movement is limited to white educated women.

Superiority Complex

Sri Lankan woman in Lebanon, you're enslaved in Lebanon. You come to a country that imagines itself advanced while it is behind your homeland. What occurs to you as you listen to Said Aql and May Al-Murr (who both expressed joy when Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982) as they lie about Lebanese superiority and alleged Phoenician civilization? What if you were to read Nabil Abu Munsif's writing – expert on local news and Lebanese genius simultaneously – about worldwide Lebanese genius? Don't you wish you could scream in their faces? Don't you wish you could expose their claims? If only you could protect yourself, you would've told them that Sri Lanka also has scientists and artists, and Lebanon even shows off its criminals, tricksters, thieves and embezzlers as long as they were of Lebanese descent. They even boast about the non-Lebanese as part of Lebanese global genius if their name appears Lebanese such as Elia Kazan, the American director of Lebanese descent, whom the LBC celebrated only because it thought he was from the Qazan family. Don't you feel a strong urge to inform them that their claims stem from centuries of colonization and racism built on theories of some races' superiority over others?

This is your holiday, Sri Lankan woman in Lebanon, and they forget that you're a woman. To them you are only a housemaid. They even use the Sri Lankan nationality as a derogatory term, just like they use "Kurdish" for degradation. In March 8 and 14, they accuse of each other of being "Sri Lankans" for "the Syrian" or the United States. How did you end up in the capitol of public racism, Sri Lankan guest? Of course, your sisters in other countries also face humiliation and abuse, such that the Philippines prohibited its Filipino servants from traveling to Jordan due to her dire suffering. Our guest from Sri Lanka, you're welcome to immensely despise this country and to never return. But it is poverty, and poverty conflicts with freedom. Ali bin Abi Talib said "poverty in one's own homeland is exile" so you suffer two levels of exile: in your own homeland and in this disfigured homeland. You're a woman, guest from Sri Lanka, but they do not remember that you're a woman except for the few minutes when they sexually harass you or the house's boys rape you.

They import servants to exercise authority over a human of lesser race in their opinion. It is the Lebanese creed which they ingest and inherit generation to generation. They want maids so they could feel class-wise and ethnically superior, which is why they allow you only to address them using titles they borrow from the white man's movies. He thinks he's a gentleman and she thinks she's a lady and that is only because they pay you $100 or less per month. They have no shame in demeaning you publicly. It's a tradition, just like sectarianism is a tradition in the land of tabbouleh. When a lady demeans you and screams in your face or when an employer beats you, don't you wish you could scream in their faces? If you could only say to them: I just saw you on television chanting and preaching about freedom and human rights, and this exposes your truth; enemies of freedom who know of freedom only what Bush uses to market his never-ending wars. If they didn't own you and forcefully confiscate your passport, you would've screamed in their faces and objected to their hypocrisy.

Then there is that picture. That woman from Ashrafiyya who supports the Lebanese Forces who dragged a Sri Lankan maid to the sectarian plaza and dumped flags and colors on her. That picture surfaced on the BBC's website and on websites around the world. That woman repeated her act, thinking it was cute, as if dragging her maid to sectarian wars was a humorous expression. If only you could drag that very woman to a protest in Sri Lanka to show her the hideousness of her act.

What do you think about this self-praise about beauty by women of the society that describes itself as velvet when it is roughter than the sack of potato? Aren't you disgusted by this self-praise? Aren't you irritated by their beauty standards that sanctify white skin while they descend from mixed African and Asian lineage? Each thinks she descended from the Borboun family. They don't think you're beautiful and they call you the vilest and filthiest names. But you're more beautiful than those who measure beauty with the number of plastic surgeries, the amount of make-up on their faces, and the ability to mimic white western women on the screens of indecency and vulgarity. Don't believe them; they're prisoners of the standards they absorbed from their colonizer. Look in the mirror and remember that you're not encumbered with their complexes and beliefs. They not only demean you, but they also demean people of the Arabian Gulf in spite of their flattery and deception. Were it not for the dinar, they would've treated the people of the Persian Gulf the same way they treat you, true lady of Lebanon. They want to resemble Barbie dolls even if those dolls were more real and natural than them. You don't suffer their existential complexes or countless self-doubts.

You watch the screen and notice that you're absent from Lebanon's popular culture. You do not exist, in spite of your large numbers in proportion to their populace of this deformed homeland, with the exception of the jokes say about you in their programs. There's an untalented artist who sang a despicable song about you. They mock and make fun thinking they are superior. They don't realize how small their country really is, both in size and role. They believe lies fabricated for them by the likes of Fouad Ifram Al-Bustani, Said Aql, May Al-Murr and Jesuit Orientalism. They told them they were the manufacturers of a great civilization, and all they actually built was toilets for bathrooms. They think their country is the only one with cedar trees, even though Morocco's cedar trees far outnumber theirs. The world knows about them only because of the monstrosity of their civil wars. Monstrosity is the only true claim to fame for Lebanon. Their homeland is the prototype for ferocity of civil war but they still address the world in the barren language of Amin Al-Gemayyel who said during the peak of his country's civil war, with Israeli support, that he'd "amaze" the world. He amazed the world during his reign only by corruption, repression and relying on outsiders; Israel one day and Syria the next.

Why do I see you walking on the streets of Beirut with your head hanging low? Hold your head high. I want you to walk proudly in spite of them. You're entitled to belittle their belittlement towards you. You're the lady, not those who glow with the possession of diamonds and foreign maids. They talk about principles and modernism but they see no fault in your imprisonment, our Sri Lankan guests, in kitchens and bathrooms. Were it not for poverty, you would've addressed them with the castigation they deserve. Were it not for poverty, the Sri Lankan maids would've demonstrated in the arbitrarily-named "Freedom" Plaza. Were it not for poverty, our Sri Lankan guests would've shouted demanding their liberation from slavery. But I won't lie to you. If you were to demonstrate demanding your rights, we would fire on you without hesitation, and the opposition and the ruling group would've united against you. On your holiday, you're entitled to curse this homeland and its inhabitants."
