[mukto-mona] While Obama clinches nomination, Clinton gave a defiant speech

While Obama clinches nomination, Clinton gave a defiant speech

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

By all accounts it was a historic day.  Today, an African American man got the nod from the Democratic Party to be its flag bearer in the next presidential election to be held on November 4, 2008.  In the evening Senator Clinton gave a speech before her volunteers and campaign workers, which many political analysts thought would be her concession speech.  However, instead delivering the much-needed concession speech and showing the olive branch to Obama campaign, what she did was deliver a defiant speech that was full of praise for herself.  At the end of her speech she said that she would think about her next move.  Most panelists at CNN were dumbfounded not knowing what is to come next.  A few of the political pundits thought she was holding out for bargaining the VP (vice president) position from Obama.

The media was full of news, rumors, and prediction all day today.  Before the polling places in Montana and South Dakota could close their door we read an AP report in 'Yahoo News' portal in which it was mentioned that Senator Obama had clinched the nomination.  This happened because a number of super delegates who remained on the sideline may have decided to support his candidacy.

In the midday today (June 3, 2008), we read a Reuters report in which it was mentioned that President Jimmy Carter was about to declare his support for Obama's candidacy.  Mr. Carter is a super delegate from Georgia.

As I alluded to earlier, today was a day that filled the cyberspace with political news emanating from the primaries being held at Montana and South Dakota. These are the two final primaries for Democrats.  The long fight between the two leading candidates had taken its toll.  Even though Senator Clinton was careful these days not to use any abusive language against Senator Obama, the verbal abuse that he had received thus far from Clinton campaign had polarized the two factions of the Democratic Party.  Senator Hillary Clinton perhaps did not see the inevitability.  Her campaign people had done the math wrong.  When CNN's Chief National Correspondent John King was telling at every opportunity in the last few weeks that Senator Clinton will not reach the finish line to clinch the victory, the Clinton campaign pooh-poohed the notion.  A defiant Bill Clinton was assuring the voters that Hillary will get the nomination eventually.  Many political analysts thought that Bill Clinton's wishful thinking is only possible by sleight of hand.

President Clinton had crisscrossed America on behalf of Hillary Clinton while telling the crowd that she would make a fine president.  Unfortunately, that did not happen.  President Clinton is in the news again for all the wrong reason.  In the web the 'Vanity Fair' magazine had published a story on him with some startling revelations on his health after undergoing heart surgery in 2004. It is noteworthy to mention here that Bill Clinton out of his character had made some outrageous comments throughout the primary seasons against Barack Obama. Todd Purdum, the national editor of 'Vanity Fair' wrote in July 2008 issue where he mentioned that Clinton's mood had altered after the heart operation done in 2004.  In that article ("The Comeback Id) unnamed people close to Clintons have said that Bill Clinton is an angry man who had difficulty controlling his tongue.  In reply, Bill Clinton called Mr. Purdum a "slimy guy." The other unsavory words he used to characterize the reporter were "sleazy", "scum bug."

In the evening all three presidential hopefuls gave speeches.  Senator John McCain talked before 100 or so people in the outskirts of New Orleans shredding Barack Obama.  Then Senator Hillary Clinton gave her defiant speech in New York City before thousand or so Democrats, which will undoubtedly go into the pages of history as one of the most defiant political speeches.  Shortly thereafter, Obama spoke before 20,000 supporters in an indoor stadium to lay a claim that by delegate counts he won the nomination.  The speech was electrifying in which he used kind words for Hillary Clinton.  More than anything, Barack Obama had a profusion of kind words for Senator Clinton.  The speech will most certainly go down in the annals of American history as a great one.  He is an acknowledged orator who comes up with great lines.

Tomorrow (June 4, 2008), newspapers and blogs will cover articles, criticism, commentaries those that will show that Senator Clinton is a very shrewd and calculative woman.  She missed a great opportunity to hand the olive branch and become a team player.  Is she about to bargain for the VP position?  Many think it is not the right approach.  Had she given a conciliatory speech, the Obama camp would have considered her to be included in the ticket. In just few days it will be very clear what she wants from Obama camp.  Until then stay tuned.

Press release

INDIA
Protesters attack Hyderabad newspaper after article about castes

Reporters Without Borders condemns the physical attacks that members of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS), an organisation that defends a lower caste, staged on the headquarters of the Telugu-language daily Andhra Jyothi and its employees on the evening of 26 May in Hyderabad, the capital of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, in protest against an article accusing certain caste organisations of corruption.

Shouting "Long live the MRPS," around 50 people threw stones at the newspaper's offices, located in the east of the city, then forced their way inside, where they spilled petrol from cans and started fires in several places. Some employees came close to being set on fire after been splashed with petrol. The fires were put out and the staff finally got the assailants to withdraw after about 10 minutes. The attack occurred during a brief absence by police who had been sent to protect the newspaper after telephone threats were received in the morning.

Simultaneous protests were also staged in the nearby towns of Vizag, Warangal and Sangareddy, where many copies of the newspaper were burned. MRPS president Manda Krishna Madiga, who filed a complaint against the newspaper, told a rally in the centre of Hyderabad: "Andhra Jyothi is a newspaper run by the upper castes. The article was a deliberate attempt to create conflicts within the Dalits [lower caste 'untouchables']."
Andhra Pradesh chief minister Rajasekhara Reddy condemned the incident but called on journalists to exercise more restraint and rejected the corruption charges made against himself.

INDE

[mukto-mona] M N Roy

Hari Sharma had requested this document quite some
time back on this list, it was needed by Jan Myrdal. I
am afraid it took quite long to get hold of.

A hard copy of the journal The Radical Humanist is
available at Columbia University.

MN Roy it will be recalled was expelled from the
communist movement in 1929 for writing in the Brandler
press. It is sometimes thought that Roy was expelled
for his activities in China but this is not so, there
is a small noting by Stalin on this which weas
published on this some years back. In his last years
Roy was close to the views of Bukharin on
"decolonisation" theory which was rejected by the
Comintern in 1928. This "theory" argued that India was
rapidly developing industry and that along with that
was undergoing "decolonisation". It was a view also
shared by Trotsky at that time. Roy broke with Marxism
and went over to 'Radical Humanist' theory but
nevertheless still retained a positive view of Stalin.

The Radical Humanist, March 15th, 1953

The Death of Stalin
M.N. Roy

During these years of cold war between the communist
and the anti-communist worlds, Stalin personified the
fearful spectre of Communism invoked by Karl Marx a
century ago, He was the most hated, feared and
maligned man of our time. As the leader of an
admittedly dictatorial system, he was ruthless and at
home committed and connived with many unnecessarily
cruel acts, which shocked the civilized world. But at
the same time, he led a numerous people inhabiting
one-sixth of the globe out of mediaeval darkness and
economic backwardness. Centuries before him, Peter the
Great endeavoured to do the same thing. For that
patriotic endeavour, he has gone down in history as a
great man. No great man has ever been an angel.
Greatness is always purchased at the cost of goodness.
Stalin did not do anything worse. He certainly
deserves a place among the great men of history. And
modern historiology has not yet killed the Carlylean
belief that the history of the world is a composite
biography of great men.

Following the conventional injunction, De mortuis nil
nisi bene, (nothing but good be said about the dead),
the press of the anti-communist world may be somewhat
charitable in the obituary notes on Stalin. The death
of Stalin, which had to come some day, will plunge the
communist world in gloom and consternation. But let us
hope that it will have a beneficial repercussion on
the anti-communist world. The disappearance of the
fearful spectre may eliminate the fear psychosis
against which President Truman in his farewell message
very wisely warned the American people. The fear is
not of Communism. All sensible people know that the
world cannot stand still. Capitalist free enterprise
and formal parliamentary democracy have exhausted
their progressive potentialities. Civilised mankind
requires a new ideal. Communism in practice has turned
out to be not what it professed to be. But while
denouncing all its defects, it must be admitted that
no better alternative to the unstable and unpromising
status quo has yet been offered. This failure of the
crusaders against Communism increases its appeal and
strength. If the civilised world, in the present
all-round crisis, is compelled to choose between the
status quo, which, cannot be maintained except through
a war, and an unknown future of hope, the natural
instinct of self-preservation will persuade, it to
choose the latter.

Fear and hostility will not check the advance of
Communism. Nothing short of another world war will do
that miracle. Blinded by righteous indignation against
the misdeeds of the dictatorial regime of Stalin, the
non-communist world overlooked the fact that the years
of cold war have been a period of preparation for a
gigantic clash of arms to free the world from the
menace of Communism. That, indeed, is a laudable
abject. But will not the end be defeated by the method
of attaining it?

In order to justify the large-scale preparation for
war at the cost of the economic security of Western
Europe, thus actually helping the spread of Communism,
the leaders of the anti-communist world have argued
that Stalin at the head of the clique of wicked men of
the Kremlin was conspiring for the conquest of the
free world, and the latter, therefore, must prepare
for defence at all cost. Freedom is precious. Economic
security must be sacrificed for defending it. On the
face of it, this may be a plausible argument, although
the dangerous fallacy of rearming the European peoples
by undermining their economic security has of late
been recognised by not a few responsible and
farsighted leaders of the democratic world. But for
the present, that is not our point, which could be
argued at length and convincingly. Several years ago,
in this journal, we expressed the apprehension that
the programme of rearming Europe would rather help
Communism than check the dreaded Russian aggression,
should it take place.

For the moment, our plea is that some justice should
be done to the most maligned man of our time. He
deserves justice; because, but for his caution and
wisdom, and also his fanatical faith in the
inevitability of revolution, war might have already
overtaken the civilised world. If .the charitable
obituary notices on his death do not acquit Stalin of
the charge of preparing a war against the democratic
world, they would be hypocritical and unrealistic.

Twenty-five years ago, soon after he took the destiny
of Russia and the entire communist world in his hand,
Stalin began applying himself to the stupendous task
of building up an army which would, in course of time,
be able to stand up against a world of enemies. As an
orthodox Marxist and rigid believer in the teachings
of Lenin, he took it for granted that the capitalist
world was bound to risk a war to bring about the
downfall of the Socialist Republic. It was not easy to
accomplish that task in an industrially backward
country. To overcome that difficulty, Stalin gave the
development of heavy industries first place in the
programme of the economic reconstruction of the U
.S.S.R. He was the greatest military genius of our
time. He realised that an industrially backward
country will remain militarily weak, as had been the
case with Tzarist Russia. The programme of forced
industrialisation compelled Stalin to commit the cruel
act of massacring most of the old Bolsheviks, some of
whom, like Bukharin, for example, advocated the
Dantonist point of view that, having made a
revolution, now let the people enjoy its benefits. But
the farsight of Stalin was more concerned with the
future of the revolution. He argued that they had made
a revolution and established the first Socialist State
in the world, and now their duty was to prepare for
its defence.

In the years immediately following the second world
war, there was no force in Western Europe to stop the
Red Army if it was ordered to march ahead. Even now,
if the Russians decide to overrun Western Europe, they
can reach the Rhine, and even the North Sea and the
English Channel, in a matter of weeks. That is the
opinion of many a strategist of the Western world. It
is also admitted that not before another two years
will the projected European Defence community be in a
position to resist a Russian attack. Why did the
Russians wait all this time, if they really wanted to
overrun Western Europe at the risk of plunging into
the third world war? There are many Russians high up
in the Soviet hierarchy who advocated that line of
action. Zhdanov, who was for a time regarded as the
heir-apparent of Stalin, was the leader of that group.
There is only one explanation that the catastrophic
plunge was not taken. It was Stalin's caution and
wisdom which restrained the ardent advocates of world
revolution.

By orthodox anti-Stalinist Communists as well as by
others, it has been argued that Stalin had abandoned
the ideal of world revolution and was concerned only
with the expansion of his empire. A little reflection
reveals that this hostile allegation credits Stalin
with having stood between the world and another
catastrophic world war.

He did not abandon the ideal of world revolution, but
believed, and stated repeatedly in public, that
revolution could not be exported. It must be brought
about by the indigenous forces. The honesty of this
statement was vouchsafed by the doctrine of Socialism
in One Country. Evidently, Stalin believed, in the
closing years of his life at any rate, that the
example of the success of Socialism in the Soviet
Union would inspire other countries to follow the road
to Socialism. There has been a good deal of talk about
the satellite countries of Eastern Europe.
Undoubtedly, Communism has been placed in power there
by the support of the Russians. The creation of the
so-called satellite States was a strategic necessity.
To surround itself with a ring of friendly and
subservient States was a condition for the defence of
the "Socialist Fatherland". In order to judge Stalin,
or anybody else, objectively, one must look at his
misdeeds from his own point of view. If that is done,
Stalin will appear not as the devilish destroyer of
human freedom, but as an idealist. He has pursued a
false ideal. But as long as it was his ideal, he was
justified in pursuing it. He was careful enough not to
prejudice his ideal by launching on the adventure of a
war. As a Marxist, he believed that the collapse of
capitalism was inevitable, and Communism would rise on
the ruins of capitalism. With that belief, he could
sit back and wait until the inevitable happened.
Meanwhile, he acted according to Cromwell's dictum:
Pray to God, but keep your powder dry.

It is doubtful whether his policy will survive him.
The anti-communist world is feverishly speculating
about his successor. The more rabid anti-communists
are hoping that the death of Stalin will mean the end
of the Soviet Union. To guarantee against this dire
possibility was one of Stalin's great concerns. In
order to gather in his own hand all the reins of
power, he ruthlessly eliminated all the old
Bolsheviks. But at the same time, he all along tried
to bring up a new generation qualified to take up the
reins of power when they would fall from his hands.
Naturally, among the heir-presumptives, there has been
jealousy and rivalry. But in bestowing his favour,
Stalin has never been subjective. He very carefully
measured the merits of a pretender.

For the moment, it is almost certain that Malenkov is
the heir-designate. The untimely death of Zhdanov
removed the danger of, a fierce struggle for
leadership after Stalin's death, such as happened
after Lenin died. Molotov will be a disappointed man.
But the Communist Party of the Soviet Union is
Stalin's creation. It will hail as leader the man
designated by Stalin. And it is known that Malenkov
favours avoidance of any rash policy which would
prejudice the gigantic task of rebuilding the Soviet
Union out of the ravages of the second world war. It
can be reasonably believed that for his preference for
caution Malenkov was chosen by Stalin as his
successor.

So, even after the wise leadership of Stalin is no
longer there, the "wicked men of the Kremlin" may not
run and precipitate the world into a gigantic armed
clash. It will depend on how the anti-communist world
will react to Stalin's death. If even now it will try
to judge Stalin not only charitably, but objectively,
there will be no provocation for his successors to
plunge into any rash action. The absence of Stalin
will make them feel less confident, and they may be
disposed to adopt a more reasonable and 1ess
aggressive policy, if they will be given the
opportunity to do so without losing face.

The following is the obituary of M N Roy in Radical Humanist, with a note by Prof Vijay Singh, via  Prof I K Shukla. Interestingly, Roy had a soft corner for Stalin. How could he leave the USSR escaping Stalin's iron walls remains a mystery? After Lenin's death, Stalin slowly buried Lenin's colonial thesis and revived Roy's Supplementary Thesis which was rejected at the 2nd Congress of Comintern, and was circulated after a great deal of amendments by Lenin. All this is now open with the reopening of Comintern Archives, mnainly based on which Prof Sobhanlal Datta Gupta wrote his seminal work,  Commintern and the Destiny of Communism in India:1919-1943-Dialectics of real and possible History.

Here is a statement which will outrage the
anti-communist world: Stalin was a man of peace,
although disdained to have peace at any price. He
would go far to avoid war because he believed that,
under the present condition of the world, peace would
promote the cause of Communism. The future of the
world will not be so very gloomy as it appears today
if this truth will be recognised by the anti-communist
world. If that happens, Stalin's death will mark the
beginning of a new chapter in contemporary history – a
chapter of mutual understanding and toleration. Stalin
was undoubtedly the tallest personality of our time,
and as such is bound to leave his mark on history.

Farid Bakht (faridbakht@yahoo.com) is a commentator on South Asian affairs.

Fakhruddin Ahmed announced that the elections in Bangladesh will take place as scheduled in December. The ultimate motives are questionable as the state of emergency is still in place. Qualms about closer civil-military cooperation are widespread. With the pretext of bolstering national security the fear is that military will play a permanent role in political affairs. The choice of the new us ambassador is also indicative of American intervention in empowering the army.

The sun of the New Year will welcome an elected and people's representative government aft December…." With these ringing words, the chief adviser of the caretaker government of Bangladesh, Fakhruddin Ahmed announced that elections would be held during the third week of December this year. In an address to the country on radio and television, Ahmed also decreed that some of the restrictions on political activity would be lifted. Moreover, a series of dialogues would be conducted with the political parties.

This was a significant announcement in that a specific time frame is now in place. It has also raised the stakes. The US embassy has become publicly more active, raising alarm among some commentators that the country is entering a period of six months, beset with minefields. Even if the army returns to the barracks after the promised elections, they look set to introduce a National Security Council and thus play a permanent and central role in political affairs.

Ahmed, the preferred public face for a military-controlled government, hoped that his speech would draw a line and put an end, once and for all, to doubts about whether an election would be held.

Politics in Shackles

The regime is continuing its draconian limits on politics, notwithstanding its partial move to allow more "indoor politics". With only a few months to go, political parties are not allowed to hold large public gatherings. In a nation of limited literacy and access to information, this is nothing more than a gag on political expression, preventing meaningful contact with the people. Instead, politicians have been advised to go "door-to-door" to reach out to voters.

The "relaxation" requires that the parties contact the metropolitan police commissioner or district magistrate at least 48 hours before any proposed meeting. No more than 200 people will be allowed to attend. For larger numbers, the party organisers will have to ask for special permission. All these meetings have to be conducted indoors. The use of loudspeakers is prohibited. To cap it all, the regime has decided the content of any such gathering – only party activities, including elections, can be discussed.

The chief adviser also made no immediate commitment to removing the state of emergency. Thus, processions, rallies and strikes continue to be banned. Under the Emergency Powers Rules, the regime can arrest any individual if it considers his or her actions will have an adverse effect on relations with another country or against the "public interest". The latter gives leeway for arbitrary imprisonment.

He has disregarded the parties' demand that local elections should be held before national polls. Thus an unnecessary complication has been created which will be seen as yet another attempt to influence the general elections.

Most importantly, the two ex-prime ministers remain in jail on corruption charges. Khaleda Zia was interrogated last week about her role in the Barapukuria coal mine deal. She suggested: "If cases are filed in such a manner, no government in future will be able to run the state..."

At the time of writing, neither of the two main parties has decided whether to engage in dialogue with the regime. Since May 22, smaller parties have trooped into the chief adviser's residence. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, loyal to Khaleda Zia, initially declined to accept a letter of invitation. Under sustained government pressure, the BNP had been split into two. Meanwhile, the other BNP group, led by Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, was also invited to the talks, in this game of divide-and-rule.

The Jamaat-e-Islami, so far relatively unscathed, has just seen its leader, Matiur Rahman Nizami, end up behind bars along with the ex-secretary general of the BNP, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan. They have been accused of corruption in the awarding of a contract to handle containers in the land port in Dhaka and also in Chittagong. The contract was given to Global Agro-Trade Company (GATCO) in 2003. While few doubt that significant amounts of cash greased hands, it is widely felt this is just another motivated case to pressure political leaders and also provide some window dressing.

The choice of date for dialogue seems to be highly inappropriate. The ex-premiers are either being hauled into court or questioned at the same time as the regime makes apparently conciliatory gestures of wide-ranging discussions on the political future of the country.

The continuing mistrust of the ultimate motives was highlighted by comments by the BNP's Delwar Hossain when he said the government was conspiring to "form a dummy parliament…via a farcical election". He continued by claiming the Election Commission was implementing the military's agenda in proposing a bicameral parliament, increases in the number of parliamentary seats and changes in the constitution. Countering the chief adviser's speech, he accused him instead of "... want(ing) to hold an election without participation of Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina…. (which) cannot happen".

Renewed American Intervention

The choice of the new US ambassador has been ringing alarm bells. James F Moriarty earned notoriety during his tenure in Nepal. A look at his record suggests his broad experience of Asian politics is of the aggressive bent (as seen in his handling of clashes with China over embassy bombings and military incursions).

A speaker of Bangla (among four other languages), the motives of the 13th US ambassador to the country have been questioned by some of the more independent Dhaka analysts. It has been noted that he had a penchant of visiting Nepali army camps, making bellicose speeches against the Maoists and displayed hands-on activism in trying to break up the alliance of the political parties with the Maoists. Regarding Bangladesh, in a press conference in Dhaka, he tried to be disarming by suggesting: "I wouldn't dream of getting involved in your internal affairs". History suggests otherwise and it remains to be seen whether the Americans will back a flawed election and/or constitutional changes to empower the army's role.

A Charter or Security Council?

Fakhruddin Ahmed has also mentioned the need for a national charter. This is being regarded as a smokescreen for the emergence of a national security council. Mooted in mid-2007 by General Moeen Ahmed, the regime has been coy in its details. What can be gleaned is that it will be an updated version of a proposal in 1996, with the power to intervene in self-designated "times of emergency".

Several seminars have been held to gain support in "civil society" but has seen few takers. Moeen Ahmed recently extended his tenure as head of the army by one more year to June 2009 and will oversee the much publicised "exit strategy".

This has been amended to include the following:

– Conduct national elections with a view for smaller parties to hold a balance of power. This looks like including Bikalpa Dhara and the Jatiyo Party (the cases against its party chief, ex-dictator H M Ershad, are being removed one by one).

– Mete out sentences on the two ex-prime ministers and invalidate their participation in elections. By encouraging splits (so far only in the BNP and not Awami League), it is thought the two main parties will receive diminished votes.

– If that were not to work, the National Security Council would hold the real power in being able to dismiss any new administration, on the count of national security or perhaps on the back of economic mismanagement.

On the latter point, the regime is being diverted from coping with its own economic crisis. The 10 advisers (quasi ministers) are having to hold meetings regarding elections rather than expedite key decisions. For example, the law adviser, A F Hassan Arif commented: "I can hardly make time for my ministries in the midst of the hectic dialogue process".

While rice prices have seen small declines in wholesale markets after the "boro" harvest, this has not filtered to retail outlets. The ban on public protest is masking widespread anger. This could be unleashed openly in the winter political campaign, whether or not the state of emergency is withdrawn.

[ALOCHONA] Student and Staff arrests at Nottingham University under under Terrorism Act - Please

Oh so, its University's fault that it caught two of its Moslim people downloading Al Qaeda Manual for Terrorists in the Western Countries, made copies of it and were distributing those copies to Moslims?

University should have investigated them and not Police. Are you out of your mind sir?
I quote from the original post, ...

" ... a police officer remarked that the incident would never have occurred if the persons involved had been "blond, Swedish PhD students" (the two men were of British-Pakistani and Algerian backgrounds respectively)".

Can this man tell us name of that Police Officer if he is not lying?
Has no Algerian or Pakistani Moslim been a Sneak Attack Terrorist?
How many Blond, Swedish Ph D. Students have been Sneak Attack Terrorists and have worked for any JehaaDi Organization?
I guess, new Definition for JehaaDi Moslims in the West is, "Who have no shame. Who back-stab, whoever's charity they are raised on".

Sir,
Alochona is one thing and spreading lies against a nation, where everybody's opinion is heard, everybody's free to say or do whatever he/she wants remaining with bounds of law and without spreading violence, even Gays and Lesbians are allowed to marry in some states. If your children are being told to keep their mouth shut in USA, they must be pretty obnouxious because mine are not and neither do I.

If our children are being told to shut up, how come one of our children is one of the 50 Governors of USA?
How come one of my cousins is Police Chief of a major city of USA?
How come Khaki, an Urdu Speaking Shiyah of a poor family from Karachi is Senior VP of Microsoft?
How come Safi Quraishi, an other Urdu Speaking of a poor family from Karachi could own AST Computer Company and still is worth a billion dollars?
There are dozens of such success stories and you think, our Moslims achieved all that because they were told to keep their mouths shut in USA?

Sir,
I'm 61. Have lived in USA since 1973 and nobody has ever shut my mouth or my children's mouth because they are not Traitors of USA like most Moslims like to be doesn't matter how good they are being treated, what kind of great jobs they find and how much they prosper beyond their own dreams.

You started criticizing me without understanding, what I wrote. No country can tolerate subversive Terrorist Activity in the name of eqality, Freedom of Speech and Expression. If you don't like it, go back ...!

Your comment is smart but lacks sensitivity.

Bangladesh has many problems and lack of human rights is one of them. No Hindu migrates to Bangladesh in search of safety and prosperity. We have a long way to go before that becomes a reality.

But the UK and US and most western countries  boast of high standard of human rights and freedom. We have immigrated to  these countries in search of  opportunities and  freedom.  You will feel the pain when your children grow up in this country, go to the university but are forced to keep their mouth shut (like the Hindus do in Bangladesh).

As parents, we have to ensure that our children are not  misdirected to do any thing to harm the society we live in but  also ensure that  we leave behind a society which is free  for them to pursue  freedom of thought.

Please do not jump to criticize what I wrote but give some thoughts.

We can't blame British for arresting those Moslim Students because if a Hindu Religious Terrorist Group was at war against Bangladesh and had published a Manual on how to commit acts of Terrorism in Bangladesh and some Hindu Indian student of Dhaka University had downloaded that Manual to distribute amongst Hindu Indian Students of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Police would have done the same.

I see, not infringement of Academic Freedom in U.K. in this case.

Dear Friends
I'm writing to call your attention to a recent incident at the University of Nottingham, where a one of our Graduate Students at the School of Politics and International Relations and an administrative member of staff at the Department of Engineering were arrested by armed police under the Terrorism Act of 2000. Their alleged "crime" was that the graduate student had downloaded an Al-Qaeda training manual from a US government website for research purposes, as he's writing his MA dissertation on Islamic extremism and international terrorist networks. He had then sent this to his friend in the Department of Engineering for printing. The printed material had been spotted by other staff and reported to the University authorities who passed on the information to the police. The two were then arrested by armed police on May 14 and held for six days without charge, before being released without charge on May 20. During the six days they were imprisoned, the men had their homes raided and their families harassed by the police. It is worth noticing that in talking to one of my colleagues, a police officer remarked that the incident would never have occurred if the persons involved had been "blonde, Swedish PhD students" (the two men were of British-Pakistani and Algerian backgrounds respectively).

The incident was recently reported in the Times Higher Education Supplement online:

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=26&storycode=402125&c=2

Needless to say, this raises hugely important issues both about academic freedom and civil liberties. Obviously, there is the issue that for those of us involved in research on contentious issues we will by necessity have to consult primary materials of a controversial nature, and the fact that the material is controversial should not lead to it being deemed as illegitimate research material. Moreover, we should not under any circumstances have to fear for infringements upon our civil liberties as a consequence of doing our jobs. Moreover, it goes without saying that the university should guarantee the academic freedom, freedom of speech and expression, and civil liberties of all members of staff and students, irrespective of ethnic and religious background or political beliefs!

I would be most grateful if you could circulate this e-mail as widely as possible in the interest of raising awareness and attention about this incident and the wider issues of academic freedom that it gives rise to, to as many of your friends and colleagues as possible! I would of course also be very grateful if any of you would be willing to write to the University of Nottingham to express your concern about this issue. If you are willing to do so, please contact me as soon as possible.

Regards

[ALOCHONA] Re: Moeen U Ahmed in Kuwait

Dear Mr.Bhuiyan

I think that you were unfortunate that you could not see Gen. Moin at Hotel Crown Plaza (again one of the most prestigious Hotels in Kuwait). And, I think that the General was fortunate that he did not see you. You said it was smallest public gathering. In what capacity you were invited there?

Again, you said that you went to VIP lounge of Kuwait Airport along with Bangladesh Embassy and Kuwaiti Defense Ministry  officials in (or on) the day of his departure. Were you from Bangladesh Embassy or from Kuwaiti Defense Ministry? In your few minutes talk you found "this general a man of high personalities (or personality), really a brave son of Bangladesh". I don't know that I should agree with you or not but I found you a man of high personalities (or personality) though I am not sure if you are a brave son of Bangladesh. One shake hand and you knew everything about the General.

I would like to remind you that Kuwait is also part of the world and if not all some people know how the business is conducted there. My brotherly advice, try to be honest don't exaggerate or lie.

Saeed

Though to be honest I am probably the one most guilty of bad manners : ) I am writing to you because you have smashed the proverbial nail on the head by saying..."...putting forth information, references, logic, anti-logic, philosophy and morals..."This is precisely the point - there is hardly any such debate anywhere. People are so tied up in the technicalities, strategies, problems, processes, etc that thorough political debate on the issues (any issue) simply does not exist. Our papers are busy collecting handouts, press releases, quotations and numbers. Our editors and tv pundits are busy pondering the mechanisms of democracy and not the meaning of democracy. And thats about it.WHERE ARE THE GREAT NATIONAL DEBATES ON HEALTHCARE, EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT, LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ROLE OF ISLAM IN A MODERN BANGLADESH? Sure there's a debate on food prices but that debate happened because there was no choice.Go to any BNP and AL meeting and talk to them about any of these subjects. Some will look bewildered, some will get angry because you didn't mention the 'nethri' and some will think you are a showoff from abroad. But get back to the fight for power and everyone is an expert! It's like we're all stuck in a neverending third rate Hindi daytime soap opera! The Army is indeed the darwan. The electorate is the landlord. The politcial parties are the tenants. The darwan has indeed taken over because the tenants are wrecking the house and the landlord is fed up. The darwan broke some flashy vases and ruined some precious paintings - but the house itself was saved. As with all jonogonists, fancy talk about the lower classes ultimately gave way to scornful disdain of the lowly darwan! And personal attacks are all part of the fun - and a good measure of how effective one is :) Best wishesEzajur RahmanKuwait--- In alochona@yahoogroups.com, Zaheed Naser zaheed_naser@ wrote:>> Dear Alochok,> > We all support a party, group or ideology one way or another and speak for them in a direct or subtle way and dear Ejajur obviously speaks for CTG and definitely is not the best friend of the two begums!
