[ALOCHONA] Our Dismal Politics: Will Independent India Survive Until 2047?

Our Dismal Politics: Will Independent India Survive Until 2047 ?

By SUBROTO ROY

Mayawati and Narendra Modi are both in their 50s. So are the current leaders of Russia, Germany, Britain, France, the USA. No country, not even Communist Party China, is as pretentiously corrupt as ours in allowing a whole generation to be bred of "babalog" politicians among children of dead politicians or existing elderly politicians in their 70s and 80s. These babalog, Rahul Gandhi pre-eminent among them, are usually in their late 30s or early 40s. Having developed no useful marketable skills in life nor done anything worthwhile or creative, they have tended to arbitrage the political positions of their parents (whether departed or living) into gaining access and advantage in Delhi or the State capitals. Some nepotism is being seen in the USA with the Bush and Clinton families but nobody had heard of a Putin, Merkel or Sarkozy before they won their way into political power.

Inheriting advantage
The Indian phenomenon of the inheritance of advantage is also seen in organised business, in Bollywood and in journalism, which, like our politics, tend to be sold via TV. Academic institutions and the civil and military services are not far behind although there the phenomenon more usually involves exporting adult children (and bank accounts) especially to the USA or UK or Australia, and then making annual trips abroad during the hot summer months to be able to tell the neighbours about later.

The idea that the future of Indian politics is in the hands of a babalog GenNext is sheer nonsense and fantasy. The victories of Mayawati and Modi were also defeats of the expectations raised by Rahul Gandhi's Congress. There is a continuity of years between someone like Sonia Gandhi and her children which implies there can be no discontinuous jump from Sonia to Rahul in the leadership of the Congress. In between, as it were, are people like Kamal Nath among "Friends of Sanjay" or Mani Shankar Aiyar (a solitary Rajivist), both of whom have won seats in the Lok Sabha unlike Sonia's current elderly PM. If Sonia Gandhi devolves political power to her son who then leads the Congress into another defeat, of which UP and Gujarat have been examples, there will be a revolt among senior middle-aged politicians in the Congress, and the Congress may splinter into a Right Faction and Left Faction leaving Rajiv Gandhi's family to look after the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation which is what they should have been doing in the first place rather than playing at Indian politics.

A Congress disintegration may or may not finally cause a useful bipolarisation in Indian politics because Indian politics has not only an economic dimension, it has a social or communal dimension too. Besides being (ostensibly) pro-poor or anti-poor, you can be either "Islamophilic" or "Islamophobic" ~ i.e. either pro-Muslim "secularist" /"pseudo-secularist"/minorityist, or anti-Muslim "communalist"/ "fascist"/majority communitarian.

Narasimha Rao cleverly manipulated the median parliamentary vote along these two dimensions so as to maintain a weak Government in power for five years by seeming to ally with the BJP on economic issues and seeming to ally with Leftists on social issues. If the Congress splits after another major defeat caused by Sonia-Rahul incompetence, with the Right Faction joining hands with whatever the BJP morphs into, and the Left Faction joining hands with whatever the CPI-M and CPI morph into, the central question will become which side of the split along the economic dimension holds the median voter along the pro-Muslim/anti-Muslim social dimension.

The BJP remains as dreadful and unscientific a gathering as it has been always without displaying the slightest creative trace of being able to evolve into a serious Conservative Party that India remains in desperate need of. AB Vajpayee and LK Advani led it into electoral defeat but that was not enough for their patriarchy to be disturbed by competent new younger people. In any case, the BJPs more articulate better-educated members in their 50s and 60s are unable to command nation-wide respect nor, with the exception of Modi, are they able to win an election on their own steam. The idea that e.g. Pramode Mahajan's son could "succeed" him on the 10 JanPath pattern fortunately self-exploded. The best the BJP could do was to choose an inarticulate member as its nominal head while the patriarchy continued unchanged in its backward communalised thinking. Its RSS parent occasionally shows a little savant-like intelligence but generally remains in mental and physical regression.

As for the so-called Left, its multi-dimensional hypocrisy and incompetence has been permanently exposed in the heartland of what passes for Indian communism, Bengal. After the demise of the USSR and transition of Communist China towards Capitalism/ Fascism, there has been no real reason why the CPI and CPI-M cannot merge into one and then renounce together their retrograde ideology in favour of becoming a genuine Social Democratic and Labour Party representing working people and the poor. But that, like any corporate merger, would mean administrative redundancies, retrenchment and new management, and the last thing Stalinist politburo members like is the idea of losing their Rajya Sabha sinecures (in Russia and China they lost their heads but Indian conditions are kinder, gentler, more non-violent).

Besides the Congress, BJP and "Left", most other parties in India revolve around the whims, personality and IQ of some single local political warlord/warlady. The Naxals and other extremists, including Hindu and Muslim religious terrorists, at least make some pretence at representing political interests of some sections of the people; there is thus at least a slight authenticity about them, no matter how disengaged their thought processes may be from realities around them.

Endless deficit finance
The 2008 Budget or the 2009 General Election seem likely to remain in the grip of all such dramatis personae permanently on the Indian stage, and no new real creative constructive force seems likely to appear. Every political misdemeanour will be paid for by endless deficit finance and money-printing, the accounts and auditing of all public institutions shall remain in a shambles while private pockets of the heads of public institutions come to be lined with gold, the armed forces shall be ready to fight their Pakistani counterparts while deferring to any more formidable adversary, rich business people will continue with their grotesque conspicuous consumption, young people graduating from India's pampered institutions of tertiary education will continue to line up outside foreign embassies to seek hope and escape.

Can India survive as an independent democratic republic for 100 years after 1947, let alone be a country where all citizens are reasonably free and comfortable? A worst-case scenario may see North India in endless conflict with a chaotic Pakistan, Eastern India hived off under Beijing's influence, and peninsular India from Surat to Vizag being Western-dominated with "SEZs" on the pattern of pre-communist Coastal China. The failure of our elite classes to provide healthy creative governance over generations must inevitably result in the putrefaction of our body politic.

[ALOCHONA] China demolishes mosque for not supporting Olympics

A great job by the only long time fast friend of Pakistan, Communist China. Has any Moslim Country filed a protest against this action yet?
Where are the great Defenders of Islam, who had come-out on the streets vandalizing, burning, bombing, shooting people, burning flags of Denmark?
Are we going to ban Chinese Products in Moslim Countries until that Mosque is not rebuilt and China apologizes to them?
Has Pakistan or any Moslim Country closed-down its Embassy in the capital of China yet?

"Oh please don't bother us right now, we are busy conquering the West presently. We would take care of China, Japan and everybody else later".

Isha Khan <bd_mailer@yahoo.com> wrote:

China demolishes mosque for not supporting Olympics

BEIJING, Mon Jun 23, (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Chinese authorities in the restive far western region of Xinjiang have demolished a mosque for refusing to put up signs in support of this August's Beijing Olympics, an exiled group said on Monday. The mosque was in Kalpin county near Aksu city in Xinjiang's rugged southwest, the World Uyghur Congress said.

The spokesman's office of the Xinjiang government said it had no immediate comment, while telephone calls to the county government went answered.

"China is forcing mosques in East Turkistan to publicize the Beijing Olympics to get the Uighur people to support the Games (but) this has been resisted by the Uighurs," World Uyghur Congress spokesman Dilxat Raxit said in an emailed statement.

Beijing says al Qaeda is working with militants in Xinjiang to use terror to establish an independent state called East Turkistan. Oil-rich Xinjiang is home to 8 million Turkic-speaking Uighurs, many of whom resent the growing economic and cultural influence of the Han Chinese.

Dilxat Raxit added that the mosque, which had been renovated in 1998, was accused of illegally renovating the structure, carrying out illegal religious activities and illegally storing copies of the Muslim holy book the Koran.

"All the Korans in the mosque have been seized by the government and dozens of people detained," he said. "The detained Uighurs have been tortured."

The Olympic torch relay passed through Xinjiang last week under tight security, with all but carefully vetted residents banned from watching on the streets and tight controls over foreign media covering the event.

RE: [mukto-mona] Re: Skewed Media Approach to Terrorism

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48830

This is a very interesting bedtime story for kids Mr. Yogi has
brought to us. The story is full of good intentions spattered with heavenly
grace for India
from a true Hindustani Muslim. Good job, Yogi, but the problem is in this age
of logic and reason this kind of super natural stories does not really help
much. No Krishna, Jesus or Muhammad will come back re-establish
religion. Dharma sangthapanaya yuge yuge is not going to happen. So let's be
pragmatic and practical. Yogi does not help any faith by sticking to the dogmas
and fables. We need to break free all the faiths from the chains of dogmatic
ignorance. Yogi can't do that with the help of some Deobondi religious clerics.
This is a wrong approach only to confuse others thereby prolonging the age of
ignorance.

Akbar Hussain

[mukto-mona] Bangladesh : Extrajudicial killings increase

Extrajudicial killings increase
Arif Newaz Farazi
Extrajudicial killings by different law enforcing agencies, especially members of the Rapid Action Battalion, marked a sharp rise in the last six months, with deaths in 'crossfire' totalling 169 on 17 months since the state of emergency was promulgated.
From January 12 to December 31 last year, a total of 131 people were killed in 'crossfire' across the country, while 38 were killed between January 1 and June 20, 2008.
A total of 124 people were killed in 'crossfire' from January 12 to June 20, 2007, while 25 people were killed from January 1, 2007 to June 20, 2007.
The regular police force and members of the Rapid Action Battalion together killed 169 people on the plea of the anti-crime drive in a span of only 15 months.
Among the victims, 93 people were killed in 'shootouts' with RAB, 67 were killed in police 'crossfire' and seven people were jointly killed by RAB and police in 'crossfire'.
Story is almost the same for most of the incidents, with law enforcing agencies concerned repeating the cliché — tipped off, they raided certain areas at night and answered the gunshots from gangsters, leaving 'notorious criminals' — in some cases, with accomplices— dead in crossfire.
In the last of a series of such events, three alleged criminals — Sohel aka 'Bhombal' Sohel, Monir Hossain alias Baka Babu,
and Sukkur Ali — were killed in a gunfight with members of the Rapid Action Battalion at Meradia in Khilgaon in the small hours of June 16.
RAB claimed that one of their patrol teams chased the three because of their suspicious movements when they were passing through Balurmath near Meradia Bazar by a private car at around 1:45am.
Sensing danger, the suspected criminals reportedly fired several bullets on the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate. At one stage they were shot and died on the spot. The RAB reportedly recovered three firearms and 10 cocktails from the scene and seized the private car.
Babu's father Moklesur Rahman alleged that RAB personnel picked up his son and his two friends — Kalu and Belal — from a restaurant at East Rampura on May 14.
'Though my son is dead, Kalu and Belal still remain missing,' said Moklesur Rahman.
Family members of two other deceased — Sukkur and Sohel —said RAB members arrested the two at night on June 14.
They said Sohel and his friend Babu had been indulging in criminal activities for the last several years and they did not maintain any relationship with Sohel. They, however, claimed that Sukkur was not a criminal, but the driver of Sohel's car.
Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra, a human rights watchdog, told New Age, 'We are concerned over the increasing number of extrajudicial killings. It had decreased for the time being but has now increased remarkably.'
'We are requesting the government to put an end to this sort of killing,' she added.
Director-general of the Rapid Action Battalion, Hasan Masud Khandakar, told New Age, 'The number of crossfire deaths increased when the law and order deteriorated, but I am sure that the figure is not higher than it was earlier.'

[ALOCHONA] Kuwait - Bangladesh embassy acts to stop ‘criminals’

Bangladesh embassy acts to stop 'criminals'

By Francis A. Clifford Cardozo

Arab Times Staff

http://www.arabtimesonline.com/kuwaitnews/pagesdetails.asp?nid=18709&ccid=9

KUWAIT CITY : In an unprecedented move, the Bangladesh embassy in Kuwait is coordinating efforts with the local authorities in apprehending Bangladeshi nationals involved in unlawful activities, an embassy official told the Arab Times on condition of anonymity.  "Unfortunately, a handful spoil the pond for the rest and the drastic measures are aimed at upholding the image of Bangladesh," the official added. The official added that a "Complaint Box" has been set up at the embassy and anyone having any information about illegal activities of Bangladeshi nationals can drop a complaint in the box and added that the embassy has also initiated a campaign to urge Bangladeshis to abide by Kuwaiti laws. "We will thoroughly investigate any complaint we receive, and once we establish proof, then we will share the information with the Kuwaiti authorities to take the necessary action," he added.

He also said that the Bangladeshi government is considering suspending passport of its nationals who commit serious crimes in Kuwait. Kuwait is home to some 241,000 Bangladeshis, many of whom are employed with cleaning companies.  The official said it is not mandatory for the complainant to reveal his or her identity but added that the embassy recommends people to leave behind their contact details so as to validate certain information if need be.  When prodded to spell out what illegal activities the embassy was targeting, he said: "Illegal activities such as gambling, prostitution, trading in illegal international calls or assuming a Bangladeshi has committed a crime and is hiding somewhere etc. All such crimes will be tackled with the help of our community members."

He added that the embassy is in the process of establishing a database of Bangladeshi nationals residing in Kuwait and that it will also seek records of Bangladeshi criminals from the local authorities so as to enable the Bangladeshi government to take necessary legal action against them.  The official said that a website is also being set up in an effort to provide Bangladeshi nationals information on various issues. To a question as to what prompted the embassy to take such drastic measures, he said the embassy has been following news reports and thought that it was about time to put its best foot forward to prevent crimes among its nationals.

He was unable to say whether Bangladeshi embassies elsewhere would take similar measures. "I believe the campaign is a move in the right direction and will send a strong signal to our nationals that they are going to be in trouble if they indulge in unlawful activities in Kuwait. Our workers have not come here to commit crimes but to help in moving the wheel of development." Incidentally, our campaign is two-pronged: we are taking strict action against Bangladeshis involved in crimes and at the same time holding campaigns urging our nationals to shun unlawful practices, he added. The official also said that the embassy together with community members is organizing "motivational meetings" in areas where Bangladeshis live in large numbers. He said that the campaign kick started in Kuwait City followed by Jahra and in the coming days will move to other areas, including Jleeb Al-Shyoukh, Farwaniya, Khaitan, Salmiya, Jahra, Wafra and Abadali etc.

The embassy has circulated posters, leaflets and other material among the Bangladeshi nationals appealing them to respect Kuwaiti laws and to report those indulging in criminal activities, he said.

He added that embassy officials met with the Director of the Department of Immigration, Brigadier Kamal Al-Awadhi and sought his assistance in deporting Bangladeshis who are involved in unlawful activities. He went on to explain that the embassy is also coordinating efforts with other concerned Kuwaiti authorities to make the drive a success.  "We are going to use the media as a platform to drive home our message, and we are hopeful that we will succeed in our endeavors with the help of the concerned Kuwaiti authorities," he said "We have also taken initiatives aimed at improving the working conditions of Bangladeshi workers in Kuwait. The government has streamlined the recruitment process of our workers and has made it difficult for companies that violate the rights of their workers. Such companies are not allowed to hire manpower from Bangladesh."

He said the embassy is also exerting efforts to seek an increase in salaries of workers and that it was determined to create a good working environment in addition to organizing the entire Bangladeshi workforce in Kuwait. He said the Bangladesh government is committed to tackling the visa trafficking phenomenon and that many Bangladeshi workers have fallen prey to this practice.  "We have come across many Bangladeshis in Kuwait, who do not know their sponsor and this is causing them a lot of hardships because they are unable to renew their residency as they are duped by the middlemen. We are trying to address such issues as best as we can," he concluded.

[mukto-mona] Saudi Arabia's Arab Times - How to Regret and Atone for Past Sins Correctly?

Perhaps this explains why frequently our notables frequently go on Haj and Umra, some multiple times!!!

But are they doing the repentance ritual right?

Saudi Arabia's Arab Times provides sound advice on how to cleanse your soul/conscience the correct way.

Friday 13 June 2008 (08 Jumada al-Thani 1429)

Regret and Atonement for Past Sins

Adil Salahi, Arab News

The Middle East's Leading English Language Daily

http://www.arabnews.com/services/print/print.asp?artid=110848&d=13&m=6&y=2008&hl=Regret%20and%20Atonement%20for%20Past%20Sins

Q. A certain purchasing manager accepted bribes in the course of his work to facilitate deals for some international companies. Although he received large amounts, he now has very little. He has regretted his action and declared his repentance. He often goes to Makkah for Umrah or to pray in the Haram, and he earnestly appeals to God for forgiveness. Does he need to do anything else to ensure that God will grant him forgiveness?

(Name and address withheld)

A. There is no doubt that bribery is forbidden in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) says: "God curses the one who gives a bribe and the one who takes it." This is due to the fact that a bribe is normally given in order to take an unfair advantage. In this person's capacity, he could influence the decisions of his employers, so as to buy certain products in preference to others. He might have ensured a very good price for the companies he was buying from. Had he not taken bribes, he would have made his advice on the qualities each product had, and which product could give the best performance. His action is extremely reprehensible. However, his repentance is very commendable. May God forgive him.

How to ensure God's forgiveness? We need to remember that God may forgive all sins. However, He forgives what is due to Him. If a person neglects certain duties owed to God, such as prayer and fasting, then genuinely repents, God forgives him that. What is needed is simply genuine and sincere repentance, together with a resolve not to do the same sin again.

Where a sin involves taking what is due to other people, or encroaches on their rights, or leads to depriving them of what should have been fairly theirs, such repentance is not enough. In such matters, a sin involves a dual violation of duty: one toward God as the person who commits such a sin actually does what is forbidden, and one toward those whose rights have been compromised. The first part God forgives, but the other He does not, unless the people concerned also forgive the sinner. On the Day of Judgment God puts the two parties face to face and asks whether the aggrieved are willing to forgo their rights. If they do, God rewards them generously for that and forgives the offender. If they do not, then God takes some of the good deeds of the offender and credits them to the other party. If the offender's good deeds are not sufficient to compensate the other party, God takes some of the sins of that party and adds them to the offender, so as to administer justice.

However, a person's repentance may be so genuine that he completely mends his ways and becomes a devoted servant of God. In this case, God in His wisdom and compassion may decide to take over that person's liability toward others. He grants them as much reward as they wish so that they would forgive the repentant offender without taking any part of his good deeds.

To ensure forgiveness, then, one needs to undo the harm he had done to others. If one has deprived people of something due to them, one must return to them what is due to them. I realize that this may be very difficult, or even impossible. In the case of someone who had taken bribes, this can easily be impossible. To start with, if he is to admit taking bribes, he may find himself in prison, when such imprisonment will not benefit anyone. If the bribe was to facilitate a certain deal, the deal might have already gone through and nothing can be done about it. In such cases, one must only try hard to make sure that his repentance is absolutely genuine. He must also try to increase his good deeds. One of the best ways we may try is to give to charity as much as we can. If one can organize an act of charity that continues after one's death, as in the case of an endowment, this ensures continuing reward for him. At all times, one must seek God's forgiveness, because we all make mistakes, slip and commit sins. Unless God forgives us, we will be in real trouble. May God forgive us all.
