[ALOCHONA] Oh, India, why this Global mischief?

Oh, India, why this Global mischief?

By Dr. Abdul Ruff Colachal

Indians are proud of calling themselves great principled guys. Both in India and abroad Indian Hindus seek everything to themselves, equality and better provisions for Hindus in their own ways. In India they argue that they are the masters hence they decide every thing; Muslims have to obey the Hindus if they want to survive. Abroad they argue they deserve preferential treatment because India is a great country where democracy, secularism, equality, broadmindedness and justice, etc, are flourishing and Muslims and other minorities are better placed in India than the Hindus who are even denied minimum, if not everything, in their own country.

Hindus are good at propaganda and maneuvering. Indian media claim Hindus to be poor but great people, but call Muslims as bad guys to be ill-treated, Kashmiris as "terrorists", while Pakistanis are still "cross-border-terrorists" and criticize the same manners its neighbor Bangladesh. But, amazingly, all genocides and brutality in Jammu Kashmir and sabotages in other neighboring countries, India remains quite sumptuously great, so to say.

Indian double-speak

In the India media slam Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia for not letting Hindus construct temple structures illegally. They know that they don't have to be logical, but only have to insult Muslims and make the Arabs feel nervous about the lack of "democracy" in their countries. They don't question, like wise, the inordinate delay in the reconstruction of Babri Mosque as pledged by Indian government, for instance, or release of Afzal under jail torture for years as part of a great conspiracy.

When Indian Hindu terrorists demolished grand Babri Mosque in 1992, the Hindus neither in India nor abroad made any protest. The Indian Muslims are so badly shaken by Indian governmental and political interference and media bashing, they just don't protest. he so-called Muslim League and Hyderabad based MIM, both are "secular" parties attached to Indian Congress having Hindutva hidden agenda. Look at the way the Hindus in USA have done just because of a film they consider is made against Indian Hindus.

Day in and Day out Indian "patriotic" Hindus and "secular" Muslims make films in Hindi and regional languages insulting and attacking Muslims, but Indian Muslims, effectively controlled by Indian state agencies, don't protest, though they have the capacity to do so. Hindus neither in India nor abroad have not protested against nonsense, anomaly or devastating anti-Islamic sentiments being espoused by Indian media and film industry. These "secular" Muslims are keen to be appreciated by State Hindus and, hence, do everything possible to appease the Hindu masters and deceive fellow Muslims who trust them.

But when it comes to Hindutva, the Indian Hindus who go abroad to make money cannot digest even one iota of anti-Hinduism supposedly found in films, articles and books. They call themselves democrats, secularists and tolerant. There are so many Hindus in USA, Canada and UK working and enjoying life there, while pretending to be patriotic Indians. They make money abroad but don't think they are part of the country which sustains them with cash and privileges when India has kicked them off. Hindus, who don't care for Muslim sentiments any where in the world, have started a protest in the US against a Hollywood comedy, saying the film will hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Hindus worldwide.

In the film, Myers plays the main character, Guru Pitka - who is raised by gurus in an ashram in India and then moves to the US to seek fame as a self-help coach resolving the marital problems of a Canadian hockey player. 'They should draw a line when it comes to people's faith', said a Hindu fundamentalist- activist operating in the USA to propagate Hinduism. More than 5,000 people have signed an online petition protesting against the film Love Guru, starring actor Mike Myers and due to be released on 20 June, Friday. Some Hindu groups are considering a boycott of Paramount Pictures which produced the film.

So far it's only the trailer that's caused concern - two Hindu groups in the US have complained that they were promised an early screening before the film is released but were never shown it. In the UK, Paramount Pictures says it will arrange a pre-screening for Hindus before the film opens in August.

In India the Hindus criticize Muslims, torture and kill them, use all possible filthy language because Hindus are in majority and governments, services, police, military, bureaucrats, political leaders all are Hindus. But when in another country they want to protect their own interests by hooks or crooks, question why special consideration is given to Indian Hindus.

Villains and their helpers in Indian films are invariably Muslims with ugly beards and mustaches. Will Muslims who are being fooled by Hindu politicians as being "secularists" realize the Hindu mind and their global agenda at least now? Do the Muslims, at least who serve the Hindu masters in politics, media and government, ask Indian movie makers or governments to let them watch the movies before release? There have been so many movies in Hindi and other state languages made to scorn the Muslims in special ways and do the Muslims take the governments to task?

Indian Brain-washing

Like USA, Israel and many other anti-Islamic nations, India too is keen to create a strong contingent of pro-India propagandists, from all religions, mainly Hindus, to spread the news about the greatness and kindness of Indians and Indian tolerance, democracy and secularism and justice, etc.. India over decades since 1947 has generated a crop of so-called die-hard patriots who defend the Indian actions vehemently come what may and they know they get the support to the government agencies for their "services' in the form of quick jobs, promotions, special privileges, preferential loans, etc., etc. Some Muslims also receive such bones for their hypocritical services.

They have come to occupy special space in every sphere of Indian life, including media related services. Indian intolerance for Muslims and Islam is a known fact even before the grand Babri Mosque was destroyed by the Hindu terrorists organizations supported by the governments at the Centre and UP, the seat of the Babri Mosque.

India spends a lot of resources and energy in brain washing the so-called "enlightened" gang of people in a sustained manner, which in due course begins to defend what the governments do and don't do. They verbally bash any criticism of India anti-Muslim policies. Almost every section of Indian community has been brought under the control of the Indian networks spread across the country.

Still there is a small section of people mainly form the neglected, butchered section of the society, particularly the Muslims who don't subscribe to the inhuman and anti-Muslim tactics and strategies of the government and Hindutva moorings. The pampered patriotic" guys generally try to spend extra time and coverage to brain wash that section also. But failing, this "errant" section members in government services are regularly sent to the psychiatric Hindu specialists for treatment. Because the government agencies reason, rightly so, that this section is unmanageable and unmanipulable and hence is insane, and they should be brain-washed sufficiently to make them fall in line.

Occasionally this writer gets letters from the "patriotic" Indian agents to consult psychiatrists for exposing the Hindu mischief in and around the country and their double-speak through the media fully loyal to Indian scheming. But they know the Indian psychiatrists are no good, so I ask them to send me to USA, Saudi Arabia or UK and I can do the needful to get myself fully brain-washed. Then the Indian agents get panic because if I am sent to USA or UK, I would be brain-washed to suit the USA or UK needs and would listen to their advice and become their own agent, so, India would not gain any thing. India thus seems to have dropped the unprofitable idea. By the by, many have very little trust in the ability of Indian psychiatrists to treat any patient.

The crux of Indian problem, haunting every educated person, is that Indian media with their illustrations and depiction of anti-Muslimism have terrorized, poisoned and corrupted the Indian minds, especially Hindus, so much that India majority think Muslims are bad guys, no matter where they live. This sickening propaganda has converted India into a large-size mental hospital that requires more psychiatrists than any other country in the world, including USA. India has to import good specialists from USA and Israel as early as possible to treat the neo-patriots who are other wise troubled by Indo-US immoral flirting and latest nuclearism trends. More than Indo-US nuclearism India requires good psychiatrists to treat the poor Hindu guys whose minds are badly spoiled by media terror boosting.

Hindus seek equal representation in Malaysia

Indians driven out by India go hunting work and money abroad, but when found them and settled down, they begin Hindutva mooring in their activities and Indian government and Hindu organizations like VHP promote Hindutva or "Idianness" in other countries. Encouraged by Indian support, these Hindus construct temple structures illegally as they do in India. So much so, many Indian media write lavishly as to why Saudi Arabians don't love Hinduism when Indians behave almost like Hindus in India and allow the "great" Hindus who make money there to construct temple structures illegally.

In Malaysia the Hindus similarly settled down for decades comfortably calling themselves as Indian Hindus and playing power politics to weaken the present government. Hindus very effectively control the Indian Muslims working there.

Not long ago, the Malaysian officials had been considering curbing the entry of temporary workers from India. When at least 10,000 ethnic Indians gathered late last year in Kuala Lumpur to demonstrate against alleged racial discrimination, it triggered political tremors in multi-ethnic Malaysia. Not only did the protest defy a state edict against unauthorized outdoor assemblies, it also broke a taboo against publicly questioning the country's long-standing policy, like in any country, including USA , Israel and India , of preferential treatment for majority Muslim Malays. But in India Hindus are given not just preferential treatment but exclusive one. Muslims are selectively denied or rejected.

In Malaysia Hindus use tactics to convert Muslims into Hinduism with tacit support and active aids from India. Many were surprised that the protest was mounted by ethnic Indians, Malaysia's smallest and most quiescent racial minority, who have been the strongest supporters of the National Front coalition government since it came to power in 1957. But dissent has grown among Indians recently with the destruction of Hindu temples that were built illegally and court cases that ruled that Muslim-born Indians could not convert to the Hindu faith.

Indians living in Malaysia seek equality in the country in all spheres and Hindus should be well-represented in government and private jobs. Malaysia suffered race riots in 1969 when ethnic Malays clashed with Chinese, who have come to dominate the economy since they started immigrating in the 19th century. Since then, however, peace has reigned among the Malays (52 per cent of the population), ethnic Chinese (25 per cent), Indians (8 per cent) and indigenous people (10 per cent). The policy of preferential treatment for Malays, known as the new economic policy, established in the wake of the 1969 riots, was meant to narrow the income gap between wealthy Chinese and poor Malays and indigenous people, known as bumiputra or "sons of the soil", by giving the latter preference for university places and state jobs. Businesses were required to have a bumiputra partner, who would hold at least a 30 per cent equity stake. The policy succeeded in eradicating poverty among Malays and the policy has ensured this country's stability.

A Word

India Hindus should try to accommodate the legitimate interests of fellow Muslims in the country in jobs and higher education, while the Indians living abroad should consider the fact that thy are creating problems for other foreigners living in the country concerned and the vicious atmosphere they create with their Hindutva moorings should not harm the genuine Indians seeking jobs abroad in future.

India should feel ashamed of itself for being so reactionary, while Indian Hindus working abroad should try to ask Indian government to consider the plight of Muslims living there are equal citizens on the assurance given by the first premier of India, Nehru, to uplift their life conditions at par with Hindus; Indians living abroad must without hesitations ask India to rebuild the grand Babri Mosque demolished by terrorist Hindus under the able guidance from Indian governments; they must coerce Indian governments, central and state, to stop torturing Muslims and release them held in jails on fake charges of "terrorism", particularly form the notorious Tihar jail in Delhi.

And Indian living a fairly comfortable life abroad making cash and other wealth must insist on the Indian government to surrender sovereignty back to Kashmiris; ask India to stop killing the defenseless Kashmiris hereafter and withdraw its terrorist forces form Jammu Kashmir region immediately; Let the Hindus showing their power abroad and in India realize that they cannot go on the double-speak on democracy, tolerance and secularism to fool Muslims and the world at large.

Their illogical claims and illegal actions would never help the Indian Hindus to establish a global Hindutva rule whether they are in India or abroad. After all, USA and Israel are smarter than India. Hindus do prove one point that Islam did not grow throw the power of sward, nor by "terrorism" as Hindus do, but strength of the faith in oneness of God.

Re: [mukto-mona] FW: Convention of Dalits & Minorities - July 4-6, 2008, in New York City

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48923

"Dear friends,
Please do read the following news item from New York Times, entitled, "Obama Supporters Take His Middle Name as Their Own".

Pursuant to the sentiments expressed therein, I have decided to change my name on the Internet to Satinath Hussein Chuoudhary!! If more and more people incorporate "Hussein" as their middle name, the following benefits accrue from such a decision:"
With best regards,
Satinath Hussein Choudhary!!!

 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
The above quotes depict the fanaticism and radicalism of the extreme liberal wings of the Barak Hussein Obama camp. Inner most circle of the Obama camp operatives consists of well-known radicals, terrorists and communists. My guess is that, Satinath Hussein Chuoudhary is a Commie from India. Liberal Media is silent about these fanatics.  Also, McCain camp is playing cat and mouse game with them. I cannot believe the level of naivety among American people. Yet, I did not lose my faith in the American electoral system. I am hoping that people will snap out of this intoxicating phase soon before it's too late. Now I know why framers of the constitution introduced electoral college system, and not by a popular vote mandate, for electing a President. I am hopeful that, in the end, the American system will save the country from Obama-Mania.

I am angry with Republicans. They are too dumb to nominate a 70 years old man to compete with a 40 years old Democrat. They had so many wonderful candidates. Mit Romney was my choice. I wish he were the candidate. By now, he could be 30 points ahead of Obama. I may not even vote this year. Obama is a lucky man, who is running against a candidate who many Republicans find unfit to be the President.  Hopefully, Republicans/Americans will learn a lesson from this election.

[mukto-mona] Bush's Third Term

This article won't matter to the new personality cult and its loudest
devotees here, but then, nothing matters to a fundamentalist who
believes in the coming of a new messiah, anyway.

To those who are not Obama-zombies, this should, however, make a lot
of sense.

REVIEW & OUTLOOK

Bush's Third Term
July 2, 2008; Page A12
We're beginning to understand why Barack Obama keeps protesting so
vigorously against the prospect of "George Bush's third term." Maybe
he's worried that someone will notice that he's the candidate who's
running for it.

Most Presidential candidates adapt their message after they win their
party nomination, but Mr. Obama isn't merely "running to the center."
He's fleeing from many of his primary positions so markedly and so
rapidly that he's embracing a sizable chunk of President Bush's
policy. Who would have thought that a Democrat would rehabilitate the
much-maligned Bush agenda?

Take the surveillance of foreign terrorists. Last October, while
running with the Democratic pack, the Illinois Senator vowed
to "support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive
immunity for telecommunications companies" that assisted in such
eavesdropping after 9/11. As recently as February, still running as
the liberal favorite against Hillary Clinton, he was one of 29
Democrats who voted against allowing a bipartisan Senate Intelligence
Committee reform of surveillance rules even to come to the floor.

Two weeks ago, however, the House passed a bill that is essentially
the same as that Senate version, and Mr. Obama now says he supports
it. Apparently legal immunity for the telcos is vital for U.S.
national security, just as Mr. Bush has claimed. Apparently, too, the
legislation isn't an attempt by Dick Cheney to gut the Constitution.
Perhaps it is dawning on Mr. Obama that, if he does become President,
he'll be responsible for preventing any new terrorist attack. So now
he's happy to throw the New York Times under the bus.

Next up for Mr. Obama's political blessing will be Mr. Bush's Iraq
policy. Only weeks ago, the Democrat was calling for an immediate and
rapid U.S. withdrawal. When General David Petraeus first testified
about the surge in September 2007, Mr. Obama was dismissive and
skeptical. But with the surge having worked wonders in Iraq, this
week Mr. Obama went out of his way to defend General Petraeus against
MoveOn.org's attacks in 2007 that he was "General Betray Us." Perhaps
he had a late epiphany.

Look for Mr. Obama to use his forthcoming visit to Iraq as an excuse
to drop those withdrawal plans faster than he can say Jeremiah
Wright "was not the person that I met 20 years ago." The Senator will
learn – as John McCain has been saying – that withdrawal would
squander the gains from the surge, set back Iraqi political progress,
and weaken America's strategic position against Iran. Our guess is
that he'll spin this switcheroo as some kind of conditional
commitment, saying he'll stay in Iraq as long as Iraqis are making
progress on political reconciliation, and so on. As things improve in
Iraq, this would be Mr. Bush's policy too.

Mr. Obama has also made ostentatious leaps toward Mr. Bush on
domestic issues. While he once bid for labor support by pledging a
unilateral rewrite of Nafta, the Democrat now says he favors free
trade as long as it works for "everybody." His economic aide, Austan
Goolsbee, has been liberated from the five-month purdah he endured
for telling Canadians that Mr. Obama's protectionism was merely
campaign rhetoric. Now that Mr. Obama is in a general election, he
can't scare the business community too much.

Back in the day, the first-term Senator also voted against the
Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito. But last
week he agreed with their majority opinion in the Heller gun rights
case, and with their dissent against the liberal majority's ruling to
ban the death penalty for rape. Mr. Obama seems to appreciate that
getting pegged as a cultural lefty is deadly for national Democrats –
at least until November.

This week the great Democratic hope even endorsed spending more money
on faith-based charities. Apparently, this core plank of Mr.
Bush's "compassionate conservatism" is not the assault on church-
state separation that the ACLU and liberals have long claimed. And
yesterday, Mr. Obama's campaign unveiled an ad asserting his support
for welfare reform that "slashed the rolls by 80 percent." Never mind
that Mr. Obama has declared multiple times that he opposed the
landmark 1996 welfare reform.

* * *
All of which prompts a couple of thoughts. The first is that Mr.
Obama doesn't seem to think American political sentiment has moved as
far left as most of the media claim. Another is that the next
President, whether Democrat or Republican, is going to embrace much
of Mr. Bush's foreign and antiterror policy whether he admits it or
not. Think Eisenhower endorsing Truman's Cold War architecture.

Most important is the matter of Mr. Obama's political character – and
how honest he is being about what he truly believes. His voting
record in the Senate and in Illinois, as well as his primary
positions, would make him the most liberal Presidential candidate
since George McGovern in 1972. But he clearly doesn't want voters to
believe that in November. He's still the Obama Americans don't know.

[mukto-mona] Coalition Against Genocide calls for the continuation of visa ban on Modi

FYI

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 1, 2008

The Honorable Condoleezza Rice
Secretary of State
U.S. Department of State
2201 C St. NW
Washington, DC 20520

Dear Secretary Rice,

It has come to our attention that the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr. Narendra Modi is once again planning to apply for a visa to enter the United States. We urge the State Department not to allow Mr. Modi to enter the country under any conditions, as the circumstances under which he was denied a visa in 2005 remain largely unchanged, and the minority communities in his state continue to face systematic human rights violations.

The United States should not unwittingly be the platform from which these unrepentant and yet ascendant forces in India exploit the opportunity to rally the support base among Indian Diaspora communities and raise international legitimacy and standing. It would be dangerous at this juncture of Indian political process to give Mr. Modi that long denied and therefore much coveted window.

Not only was Mr. Modi responsible for the deaths of over 2,000 Muslims and the displacement of 200,000 more, but six years after the Gujarat-state sponsored violence, the Muslim community in Gujarat is subjected to a devastating economic and social boycott, institutionalized at every level. Most have received little, if no compensation for the deaths of loved ones and loss of property; thousands are still displaced, without homes, work, or access to decent schools for their children. At the level of the courts too, Muslims in Gujarat have received little justice, barring a few exceptions; and the few that have managed to push their cases forward have met with threats, physical harm and harassment.

As recently as April 2008, Mr. Modi enacted the anti-conversion law in Gujarat that effectively bars religious conversions, thereby crippling the provisions of religious freedom in the state.

In a recent expose by the investigative magazine Tehelka, the Gujarat state prosecutor appointed by Mr. Modi was captured on video confessing to protecting the perpetrators of the 2002 violence. Further, one of the accused involved in the killings, confessed to Mr. Modi having transferred several court judges as to protect him from any convictions.

Noting the prejudice extending at every level of the state apparatus, the Supreme Court ordered cases related to the 2002 massacres to be moved out of Gujarat.

Mr. Modi has not only expressed no remorse for the 2002 violence; but he has continued to justify them, as he has a spate of extra judicial killings (fake ‘encounter killings’) by his police. And, the state continues to persecute civil society groups who have been trying to speak up for the victims under very difficult circumstances.

Attached please find the reports of human rights organizations and related references on Gujarat.

Sincerely,

Coalition Against Genocide

[mukto-mona] A taste of the forbidden???

Why Muslims don't pig out

Lapsed Muslims may get a taste for alcohol but pigs will fly before they allow pork onto their dinner plates

Khaled Diab

guardian.co.uk,

Wednesday July 2, 2008

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jul/02/islam.religion

Over the years, I have witnessed my faith dwindle and unravel. But long after my spirited embrace of alcohol, my "sinful" attitude to sex, my loss of faith in the temple of organised religion and my agnosticism and indifference towards the supreme being, one bizarre artefact of faith – a sacred cow that refused to be slaughtered – clung on with obstinate pig-headedness: a distaste for pork.

For years, this irrational aversion intrigued and amused my wife. Katleen would wonder why it was that many secular Muslims would drink alcohol and commit other non-orthodox acts, but never touch pork. And I would watch her with awe-struck fascination as she tucked into a spaghetti carbonara, with apparent enjoyment.

My theory was that, for believing but non-practising Muslims, there is nothing that can really take the place of alcohol – even hashish or marijuana, which is consumed by many Muslims as an alternative because it is not explicitly prohibited, is not the same as a glass of wine or beer. My friends tend to agree with this analysis.

"If you don't drink you don't drink", remarked Ahmed, an Egyptian in Paris who is a great connoisseur of beers, rakis and ouzos. "But as for pork, there are other types of meat."

Then, there's the psychological barrier that even the most lapsed Muslim must grapple with. "I think all the talk we hear in childhood of how pigs are bred in zebala (rubbish) areas and how they feed on garbage revolts us", said Abdou, a Cairene who has developed a taste for certain types of pig meat, but not others.

In fact, eating pork for Muslims is not merely tantamount to eating dogs for westerners, in certain cases, we could go as far as to liken it to consuming cockroaches – so unclean is the image of these animals.

Some Muslims rationalise their porkophobia by explaining that pigs are dangerous to eat, especially in hot climates, but pork is no more risky, at least in the modern world, than beef and poultry.

The injunction may have originally been connected to health concerns, environmental worries in an arid climate where foraging pigs could destroy precious grazing land, or as a simple test of faith and obedience.

"We are not a pig-friendly people", Abdou observed.

And, indeed, we're not. At school in England, I could tell that, unlike Aladdin and Sinbad, the Three Little Pigs was certainly not a Muslim fairytale. No self-respecting Muslim wolf would be wasting his breath, huffing and puffing, just to get his claws on some poor pig's bacon. A Muslim wolf would be far more interested in skewering Mary's little lamb to make mouth-watering kebabs.

Miss Piggy would never have got past the audition couch for the Muslim version of the Muppet Show – even for comic effect. Muslim casters may have hired instead Miss Bully, a doe-eyed bovine beauty who flies into sudden fits of rage like a bull in a china shop.

That said, pigs don't get a completely smooth ride in western culture. In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the pigs are duplicitous hypocrites who end up taking the farm over from the humans. In England, the police are not so affectionately known as "pigs". The animal is used a term of insult, as in "male, chauvinist pig", or "capitalist swine". And people greet unwelcome comments with snorts of derision.

Nevertheless, this more sympathetic view of pigs may have influenced Jews, despite the fact that pork is prohibited by both kosher and halal rules alike, to adopt a more relaxed attitude to pork. "Pork evokes no special image in my mind. Pigs are cute. I just don't eat 'em", Debby, an American Jew, said.

"Almost all of the Jews I know eat pork", Hagay, an Israeli artist, told me. "My grandmother even used to say: 'If you're going to eat pork, you might as well have the fat drip down your chin.'"

That said, many Jews share the Muslim kneejerk horror and revulsion towards pigs. "Both my parents can't stand the idea of pork", admitted Gal, a student in Tel Aviv. "Neither of them are particularly religious … but both my mother and my father find the idea of eating pig repulsive."

And revulsion could be the key to my longstanding distaste for pork. I still clearly recall my first taste of pig's meat. On my second day at school in England, the dinner lady offered me a slice of Hard to Ascertain Meat (or Ham, for short) which had provoked my curiosity because it looked a bit like the luncheon cold-cuts we ate in Egypt.

I don't much recall the actual taste, but I do remember the shocking aftertaste when my mother and father – who had casually been inquiring about my new school experience – informed me that I'd probably consumed ham. Although my parents were relaxed about it and explained that I wasn't to blame for it was an accident, I sensed disgust wash over me.

Since then, a recurring question I have asked in restaurants around the world is: does this contain pork? Sometimes, I've even resorted to mime and snorting to get my point across. I recall the spellbound fascination with which I regarded an old Cairo friend as he tucked into the Italian salamis and hams he had recently developed a taste for.

In recent years, I have got the better of my demons and now eat pork, although there are still certain types of pig's meat I cannot stomach. As someone who prides himself on his culinary intrepidness, I am pleased with this small victory for gastronomic rationality. And now I can finally bring home the bacon!

[ALOCHONA] Los Angeles Times OP Ed - Get a grip on Dhaka by Selig Harrison

Oversimplified and speculative & sensationational! But not entirely off the mark!

However this is much is certain , the "dainty & sensitive" types will go apolopeptic (check spelling) with rage at yet another assault on Bangladesh's image by US/Zionist imperialists and their Hindoo Indian running dogs!

From the Los Angeles Times

Get a grip on Dhaka

With U.S. forces preoccupied in Pakistan, an Al Qaeda affiliate has been gaining power in Bangladesh.

By Selig S. Harrison

July 2, 2008

While the CIA and the Pentagon search in vain for Osama bin Laden in the mountains of northwest Pakistan, an Al Qaeda affiliate has been quietly building up terrorist bases in the jungles of Bangladesh under the protective aegis of a new military regime in Dhaka allied with Islamist forces.

The founding leader of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami in Bangladesh, Fazlur Rehman Khalil, was one of the six signatories of Bin Laden's first declaration of holy war against the United States on Feb. 23, 1998, and a U.S. State Department study reports that Harkat "maintains contact with Al Qaeda in Afghanistan."

Bush administration officials privately endorse mounting Indian evidence that Bangladeshi Harkat agents spearheaded a series of terrorist attacks in India -- in Mumbai and Banaras in 2006, in Hyderabad in 2007 and in Jaipur in May. But the United States has conspicuously failed to press Bangladesh's military ruler, Gen. Moeen U Ahmed, for a crackdown on Harkat and for the removal of highly placed intelligence officials with Islamist ties.

Ahmed staged a bloodless coup in January 2007, forcing a figurehead president to give him emergency powers. He has pledged to hold elections in December and return power to a civilian government. The Bush administration, while formally urging him to hold the elections on schedule, has so far ignored his increasingly blatant efforts to rig them.

Ahmed is maneuvering to break up the two biggest secular political parties, the Awami League, which actively opposes Islamist influence, and the Bangladesh National Party. He barred political activity by their popular leaders, Sheik Hasina Wajed and Khaleda Zia, and is organizing a new army-controlled political party to challenge them. Invoking his emergency powers, he is rounding up grass-roots leaders of the two parties and muzzling the media. Harkat, Jamaat-i-Islami Bangladesh and other Islamist groups that support the military regime are operating unhindered.

By its silence in the face of Ahmed's power grab, the Bush administration is signaling that it sees little hope of ending direct or indirect military rule. But it is much too soon to write off the prospects for democracy in Bangladesh, where almost everyone was politicized during the independence struggle against Pakistan. Since then, three free elections have been held, and two previous military regimes have proved to be short-lived.

As the fourth-largest Muslim country in the world, with 150 million people, Bangladesh matters to the United States in security terms because Harkat and its allies have direct links to anti-U.S. Islamist forces in Pakistan. These links predate the secession of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. The Islamists in Bangladesh supported Islamabad during the independence struggle and have subsequently been used by Pakistani intelligence agencies to harass India.

When respected Bangladeshi journalists have attempted to write about Islamist sympathizers in the military regime and their links with Islamabad -- naming names -- they have faced death threats and assassination attempts. This has been fully documented by the U.S.- based Committee to Protect Journalists. The most notorious case is that of Tasneem Khalil, who worked as a correspondent for CNN and others in Dhaka. Khalil was held incommunicado last year for 22 hours, beaten and forced to leave the country after exposing Islamist influence in the military intelligence agency.

Defenders of the military regime point out that four Islamist leaders were executed last year, but they gloss over the fact that the executions occurred after the four had contacted the media to expose their links with the intelligence agency.

The army contends that past civilian regimes were hopelessly corrupt and practiced only a "feudal democracy" in which corruption, cronyism and the use of private militias by leading politicians were rampant. The military takeover in 2007 was unavoidable, it says, because the last civilian government, headed by the BNP, was rigging forthcoming elections.

But the Bangladesh Constitution requires elections within 90 days of the dissolution of Parliament and allows for only one 90-day extension of emergency powers. Parliament was dissolved on Oct. 27, 2006; thus, the army regime has been unconstitutional since April 2007.

The U.S. and other aid donors should use their powerful leverage to push hard for an immediate end to emergency powers and for elections by December. It would be a bitter irony if a new Musharraf should emerge in Dhaka just as Pervez Musharraf finds himself increasingly embattled in Islamabad.

[mukto-mona] Re: Western society tei ki nari mukto na?

Dear Talat,

Thanks for your long e-mail. You raised a very crucial topic. It would be very difficult to answer in short.  A slogan of Naripokkho (a feminist organisation in Bangladesh) is, "I am a women, the whole world is my battle field." As a member of Naripokkho, I also have the same opinion. You should not forget the fact that women in western countries are also fighting for various rights. In some cases both the way of fighting and issue differ from those of Eastern countries.

However, I will write about it in future from my experiences.

Thank again.

Gita Das.
