The dead body of Prof. Pandey was brought to the Jagannath Hall premise at the afternoon after he expired, where the Alumni Association leaders & members, and Provost & House Tutors along with huge number of current students of the Hall paid homage to him. The dead body was carried to his birth place of Tungipara, Gopalganj for funeral and ritual functions.

It could be recall that Prof. Hiranmoy Pandey had kidney transplantation in June 2003 at Karnataka Nephrology and Transplant Institute (KANTI), Bangalore , India , while the Alumni of Jagannath Hall and his friends & well wishers across the ocean provided enormous financial support for that major surgical. He was doing well for initial 2-3 years upon the surgery; however, then again his complicacies started growing.

Let us recall one of our great friends and again pay homage to him.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Turkman the Trickman

Dear Mr. Mufassil Islam,

I follow your postings with interest but there is something in your last letter that caught my attention. You said,"in case of Saudi Arabia where the un-natural deaths of women are astonishingly much lower than even USA, UK or any of the Christian or Non-Christian countries".

Would you please care to clarify three basic things:

1. What precisely constitutes "unnatural" death?
2. What is the source of such an assertion. I find it highly improbable that Saudi Arabia publishes data on female homicides.
3. If "USA,UK or any of the Christian or Non-Christian countries" are excluded which countries remain?

Thanks for your time,

Sincerely,

Reza

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Turkman the Trickman

Dear Mr. Turman/Trickman:

Greetings. You might have sighed a relief thinking that I have had overlooked your last two letters. Well as you can see, I did not. I do not understand what is the problem in your assessments and related understandings. You are an obvious derogated Islam hater who wears a hypocratic musk of a Muslim and ends with emperor Akbar's Allah Akbar at times and claims to be a Muslim yet write issues to which you are yourself utterly confused.

I think I requested you to men tion references in your mentionings and not to use tricking out of context misquotes. It is true that in an overall world data - the female birth rates are much higher than males in the world (CIA Fact File) but that does not mean all the countries will have to have female birth rates higher than males. In poor countries like Bangladesh, Angola and others - the women folk lack contraceptives and safe birth facilities and maternity care which results in higher female deaths - pushing the female population lower but you cannot say that in case of Saudi Arabia where the un-natural deaths of women are astonishingly much lower than even USA, UK or any of the Christian or Non-Christian countries. They simply have to have less female births. Are you trying to say Saudi Arabia has more female deaths from national and social deaths than many other countries? You are crazy if you think this is the case in world's lowest crime rate nation. But I do not support many of their human rights issues which are also not Islamic in the true sense. But what has that got to do anything with female deaths???? You have wildly mentioned some develioped Christian countries but why not take the examples of African nations? Female deaths are much higher among war-torn AIDS inflicted non-Islamic countries where rapes flare???

About Pakistan condemning China: I am confident that you do not have the basic understanding about International Law. A nation will condemn and call the diplomat of another nation if the other nation holds any view governmentally or might have taken up a new view which affects the basic existing and well documented views of both countries upon which the bilateral ties are bound. That's why I do not support that the Denmark Government had to apologise for the cartoons as they never supported the cartoons but they could have brought criminal charges for incitement of communal violence by the cartoonists. I hope you remember the Christian outcry after the screening of 'The Last Temptation of Christ' and the burning of Cinema halls in Latin America. In UK, when Salman Rushdie was knighted the basic view of the so called secular Government was questioned and that is the reason it was debated in the Pakistani parliament. Alas if you could realise these basic norms. (Read: William Stark's Interntaional Law).

I request you to reveal your real name and to refrain from using several names in several of your letters as you have already tried in vain several times with your apparent lack of knowledge in almost every field.

Sincerely,
Mufassil Islam

Subject: [ALOCHONA] India baby girl deaths increase

I knew Sikhs and Moslims in that part of India did not want daughters because their white and fair complexion daughters were being kidnapped very young and some were running-away with dark-skinned Hindu Boys, after they grew-up but had no idea the Male-Female ratio of the whole region was 30 Girls to 100 Boys.

Its not true that India's Average Ratio is supposed to be 95 Females to 100 Males. Females are always born 105 to 100 Males in the world. According to UNO Statistical Data following are the Female Population ratios to every 100 Males in countries of the our region:

Pakistan 93, India 94, Sri Lanka 103, Maldives 95, Nepal 102, Bhutan 89, Bangladesh 95, Burma 102, China 94, Thailand 105, Cambodia 105, Indonesia 100.

27.55 % of Non Moslim Countries or territories show Female Population at least equal to male population or lower but 70.45 % of Moslim Countries show the same. All White Countries have higher Females population than Males.

Countries and territories with most Females to 100 Males:

Falkland Islands 122, Palau 120, Montserrat, Estonia, Ukraine, Latvia 117, Russia 116, Belarus, Lithuania, Armenia, Netherlands Antilles 115, Georgia, Lesotho 112, US Virgin Islands 111, Hungary 110, Hong Kong, Macao, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Aruba, Puerto Rico 109. (No Moslim Country)

Countries with least Female Population to 100 Males:

UAE 48, Qatar 49, Kuwait 67, Bahrain 75, Oman 79, Saudi Arabia 82. (All Moslim)

There is a cultural preference for male children in India
The number of girls born and surviving in India has hit an all time low compared to boys, ActionAid says.
A report by the UK charity says increasing numbers of female foetuses were being aborted and baby girls deliberately neglected and left to die.
In one site in the Punjab state, there are just 300 girls to every 1,000 boys among higher caste families, it says.
ActionAid says India faces a "bleak" future if it does not end its practice of cultural preference for boys.
Girls 'condemned'
ActionAid teamed up with Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to produce the Disappearing Daughters report.
More than 6,000 households in sites across five states in north-western India were interviewed and statistical comparisons were made with national census date.
The real horror of the situation is that for women avoiding having daughters is a rational choice
Laura Turquet, ActionAid
Under "normal" circumstances, there should be about 950 girls for every 1,000 boys, the charity said.
But it said that in three of the five sites, that number was below 800.
In four of the five sites surveyed, the proportion of girls to boys had declined since a 2001 census, the report said.
The research also found that ratios of girls to boys were declining fastest in comparatively prosperous urban areas.
ActionAid suggested the increasing use of ultrasound technology may be a factor in the trend.
The document says that Indian woman are put under intense pressure to produce sons, in a culture that predominantly views girls as a burden rather than an asset.
It says many families now use ultrasound scans and abort female foetuses, despite the existence of the 1994 law banning gender selection and selective abortion.
The charity also blames other illegal practices - such as allowing the umbilical cord to become infected - for the growing gender imbalance.
"The real horror of the situation is that, for women, avoiding having daughters is a rational choice. But for wider society it's creating an appalling and desperate state of affairs," Laura Turquet, women's rights policy official at ActionAid said.
"In the long term, cultural attitudes need to change. India must address economic and social barriers including property rights, marriage dowries and gender roles that condemn girls before they are even born.
"If we don't act now the future looks bleak," Ms Turquet said.
Some 10 million female foetuses have been aborted in India in the past 20 years, the British medical journal the Lancet has said.

[ALOCHONA] Recognition of Kosovo and Bangladesh

It is reported Bangladesh has not yet firmed up its stance on the question of recognising Kosovo's independence, despite persistent diplomatic presentation by US Ambassador James Moriarty, who met Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury on 1st July for the second time to pursue the issue of recognition of the new Balkan state.

Ambassador Moriarty told reporters that the main purpose of his meeting was to urge the Foreign Adviser to consider the issue of recognition of Kosovo. In response, Adviser for Foreign Affair Dr. Iftekhar A. Chowdhury told the reporters, "In such cases, perceived national interest is always the key."

The Foreign Ministry had already issued a statement on Kosovo, mentioning that the Bangladeshis were overwhelmingly in support of the people of Kosovo for a variety of reasons, he added.

The Adviser hoped that a decision in this regard could be taken soon in consultation with other Islamic countries. However, he admitted the fact that the OIC-member states are split up on the issue of Kosovo's independence, and the last Islamic Conference of the Foreign Ministers held in Uganda failed to reach a consensus on the subject.

Kosovo's recognition: Split between US and Russia
Kosovo's recognition seems to be the new "power game" between the US and its allies and Russia and China. The UN Security Council could not take the decision because of the split among the veto-carrying permanent members of the Security Council.

Kosovo (with about 2 million people with overwhelming majority of Albanian Muslims) received recognition as a sovereign state, notably from the United States and some major European countries, such as Britain, Germany, France and Italy, while Russia, China, Spain, Romania, Cyprus, Greece and Serbia did not recognise Kosovo.

The official position of these countries is that Kosovo is a Serbian province under ad interim UN control , formally known as Autonomous Province of Kosovo.

The countries that oppose recognition of Kosovo consider that its recognition as an independent state in the Balkans will boost the ethnic demands for greater autonomy or independence. They argue that recognizing the unilateral declaration of independence would legitimatise the doctrine of imposing solution to ethnic conflicts.

They further argue that by the actions of some European Union member-states, every would-be ethnic or religious separatist across Europe and around the world has been provided with a tool kit on how to achieve recognition.

Factors behind recognition
In 1950, the UN Secretariat summed up on the issue of recognition as follows:

" The recognition of a new state or a new government of an existing state is a unilateral act…while states may regard it as desirable to follow certain legal principles in according or withholding recognition, the practice of states shows that the act of recognition is still regarded as essentially a political decision, which each state decides in accordance with its own free appreciation of the situation."

The question is does a state assess its own appreciation of the situation? It varies depending on situations and circumstances.. But one cardinal rule appears to be the attitude of the neighbouring countries of the new state to be recognized and that of the neighbours of the state that will accord recognition. This rule is to avoid third or distant countries complicating the political situation in the region by giving recognition to a new state.

The practice of Bangladesh during the 37 years seems to be that Bangladesh has been to insist upon certain conditions precedent to the grant of recognition of a state, namely (a) whether Bangladesh's neighbours recognized the new state and (b) whether peace and order prevails in the country and (c) whether the administration has been accepted by people within the new state.

It means (a) whether Kosovo has been recognized by its neighbours, (b) whether the neighbours of Bangladesh have accorded recognition to Kosovo and (c) whether all people in Kosovo including Serbs recognize the government of Kosovo. It appears that none of the three factors of recognition seems to have been met as of today.

Furthermore, on Kosovo issue, there is no uniform stand by the member states of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), or by the members of Non-Aligned Movement, or by the members of the UN Security Council of the UN.. Rather the issue of recognition has become a bone of contention between Russia and European Union/US. At a EU-Russia summit on 26-27 June, there has been no meeting of minds on this issue.

Against the above background, Bangladesh's position is understandable. The Adviser for Foreign Affairs rightly has pointed out "perceived national interest -- and the benefits" from such a political matter of recognition of Kosovo. He hoped that a formal decision regarding the independence of Kosovo would be mooted soon.

[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh defence budget 2008-09: An analysis

ON 9 June 2008, the Finance Adviser to the Caretaker Government presented the national budget for the financial year (FY) 2008-09 in a live broadcast over the national radio and TV. The marathon address touched upon almost all aspects of the nation's economic life - the difficulties surmounted and the successes achieved. While highlighting the budget performance last year, he also laid before the nation the socio-economic targets for the coming year and how the government planned to achieve those. He covered a wide vista of governmental activities from agriculture to industries, from education to employment, from communications to power generation. However, there was not a word on 'defence', despite it being one of the largest expenditure sectors of the government.

In the past, there used to be a few cursory remarks by the Finance Ministers in their budget speech promising to "build a strong defence force, able to safeguard the national sovereignty" etc. etc; but not this time. In the official website of the Ministry of Finance (www.mof.gov.bd) the allocation is reported to be Tk. 6306 crore (US$ 935 mil). Defence came out as the eighth largest sector, representing about 6.4% of the Government spending, ahead of sectors like Transport and Communications (6.1%), Health (5.9%) or Public Order and Security (5.6%). However, like the previous years, the nation remained in the dark as to the rationale behind the defence expenditure. While we know how much electricity the government plans to generate, how many new schools, hospitals or industrial estates the government plans to build or how much additional food grain we plan to harvest, we do not know what we plan to achieve with the money spent for defence. Unlike the developed countries of the west, defence expenditure continues to remain shrouded in secrecy in our part of the world.

Trends in defence spending

During the last financial year, while most government departments could not spend their allocated budget, the defence, like previous years, overspent and got additional budget of Tk.536 crore over the FY 2007-08 allocations. In fact, this had been the trend over the last five years when defence got additional allocation in the revised budget at the end of the year. Although the defence budget in the absolute term had been increasing, its share in the total national budget had been falling for more than a decade. While in the 80s and early 90s, the defence's share used to be around 10% of the total government spending, it has come down to its present share of 6.4%, down from 7% in FY 2007-08. The chart below shows that defence budget has been rising at a rate slower than some important socio-economic sectors. The rise in government spending on education had been particularly impressive.

However, we need to remember that while in all other sectors there are external assistance components the defence budget is exclusively self-financed. A sizeable chunk of the defence budget is spent on import of armament, spares and fuel, draining our scarce foreign exchange reserve. The "burden of defence" falls squarely on the national exchequer. If we consider the revenue expenditure, the share of defence rises to 6.8%. In terms of the GDP, defence expenditure in Bangladesh represents 1.15% of the GDP. One need to compare this with agriculture and rural development (2.8%), education (2.3%), health (1%), Transport and Communication (1.8%) and the total budgetary expenditure being 15% of the GDP. The defence expenditure of Bangladesh, when expressed as a percentage of GDP, is quite low compared to our neighbours India (1.99%), Pakistan (3%), Sri Lanka (6%) and Myanmar (3.3%) of the GDP..

Bangladesh security scenario
Military expenditure in South Asia is generally high compared to many developed countries of the west.. India-Pakistan rivalry over Kashmir fuelled an arms race for decades that ended up with both countries acquiring nuclear weapons and the delivery systems. India-Pakistan rivalry had posed serious security concerns not only for those two countries, but also for the region and even beyond. More recently, Islamic militancy and ethnic conflicts have posed serious challenges to the South Asian states. In countries such as Sri Lanka, ethnic insurgency has turned into virtual civil war. Another reason for high military expenditure is military's authoritarian presence in the national affairs as in case of Pakistan and Myanmar. In these two countries high military expenditure have resulted in a bloated military that is omnipresent in the national life turning the nations into militarised societies.

Fortunately, Bangladesh had long been an "island of peace" in an area of turbulent and violent inter-state relations. Our more than 3000 km long land boundary with India and Myanmar is well demarcated. There are small stretches of undemarcated boundaries with India, totalling about 5 kilometres, which we inherited as a colonial legacy. These irritants in our relationship could be solved across the negotiating tables. Our long sea boundary, however, remains undemarcated and could be a possible cause of conflict with the neighbours. As trade and commerce, businesses and investment grow within the South Asian states and our economies are increasingly intertwined, the chance of an armed conflict between the nations reduces. In fact, one could argue that the possibilities of Bangladesh being engaged in an armed conflict with any of its two neighbours is extremely slim at present or in near future.

The scenario changes, however, when we consider the unconventional threat to Bangladesh. Bangladesh has been the focus of international community because of the rising incidents of Islamic militancy in the country. The militants, although too weak to pose an immediate military threat, could be the source of external interference and internal instability. The nexus between the local Islamic outfits and their cohorts in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan are now well established. After massive punitive action against the organisations such as JMB, HUJI etc., there has been a period of lull in their militant activities, but frequent unearthing of bombs and explosives from the militant hideouts and the arrest of activists show that the militants are out there waiting for the opportune moment to strike.

While our primary focus had been on the Islamic extremists, there had been a simmering left-wing militancy going on in the countryside for years, especially in the extreme-poverty stricken north-eastern and western Bangladesh. With the upsurge of left-wing activities in the neighbouring Indian states, and especially with the coming to power of the Maoist political party in neighbouring Nepal, the left-wing militancy is likely to get a boost in Bangladesh. The combined onslaught of rightwing Islamic militancy and the leftwing Maoist insurgency could seriously endanger the national security of Bangladesh in the coming decades.

Our internal political instability, especially lack of institutional democracy in the country, will only benefit the extremist forces and would invite external interference. We need to adopt a comprehensive national strategy to meet the unconventional threat in which defence forces will be one of the key players, along with law enforcing agencies, financial institutions and socio-economic and educational organisation. A comprehensive approach would be necessary to tackle the problem because punitive action against the militants could be a temporary measure at best. It is, therefore, important that while we prepare our security forces to meet the future security challenges, we do carry our people along, because ultimately no plan or preparation can succeed unless it has the support of the broad mass.

Defence budget and popular participation
Since the announcement of the budget, there has been debates and discussions on it some welcoming its positive sides, others pointing out its shortfalls. In fact, as the budget season approached, there were spate of write-ups, seminars and symposiums on issues such as agriculture, education, health, economy or environment participated by government representatives, intellectuals, politicians and even ordinary people. There were free exchange of views and many concrete suggestions to the government on the way forward. In the absence of a Parliament, these acted as useful forums for the government to measure the public opinion. However, it appeared that 'defence' is held as a taboo, kept exclusively for the military to sort out. Even academic research organisations that specialises on defence and security matters appeared to have ignored the defence budget issues.

One often quotes French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau's (1841-1929) witticism, "War is too serious a business to be left to the Generals" as a justification of civilian control and oversight of the military. Most democratic societies are based on the principle of a civilian authority (President, Prime Minister, Congress, Parliament) that acting on the advice of the military hierarchy sets out the defence parameters and exercises control on the budget. On the other hand, intellectuals like Professor Samuel Huntington believes that civilian interference inevitably degrades the military efficiency, civilian non-interference in things military is the corollary of military non-interference in things civilian (and hence political).

There is much truth in both the views and often a mutual respect for each other, civilian and military authorities, is the best way forward. In that light, popular participation in the defence debate should be welcome. In Bangladesh, like elsewhere in the world, there are essentially two views. One, we might call liberals, who view military expenditure essentially a drain on the national economy, taking scarce resources away from social and economic sectors. The other, we might call conservative, who urges more for defence because they believe that security can ensure peace and stability that boosts socio-economic progress. Therefore, how much is enough for defence depends on which side of the fence you are.

Unlike the West, we do not publish "Defence White Papers" that actually sets out the goal, strategy and objectives of the forces over a period. Changes in the White Paper reflect the changes in the threat scenario. The details of the US or UK defence budget are published and available on the websites. Before the US Congress passes the defence budget, which is half of the world's total military expenditure, they call up the military bosses to justify their demands. TV channels broadcast these hearings live across the globe. In contrast, we, in Bangladesh have no knowledge of how the defence budget is spent. For a meaningful assessment and analysis one need to know what are the shares of the different Services Army, Navy and Air Force, how much of the money is spent for the administration i.e. pay, allowances etc. vis-à-vis on operation, procurement or training. What are the major procurements and what is the process. Ordinary citizen come to know of the procurement issues only when a scandal is allegedly unearthed. Thus, there is no meaningful response from the citizen. Even when the Parliament was in existence, there had never been any meaningful and critical discussion on defence matters. There used to be a Parliamentary Committee on Defence, but unlike other parliamentary committees, it did not really take off. The Parliament continued to guillotine defence budget every year on the last day of the budget session.

Conclusion
Bangladesh continues to make steady progress in all socio-economic sectors despite serious resource constraint and political turmoil. Our defence expenditure continues to be the lowest in the region. Despite resource constraint defence forces, over the years, have built up an impressive record of international recognition of efficiency and professionalism. We need to keep it up and in fact, bolster it. Therefore, every taka spent for defence must be well spent. The money spent for defence must buy us the "Peace and Security Dividend" that would ensure sustained social stability and economic progress for the nation.

While the finer details of the military budget will remain a matter exclusive to the military, its broad parameter and objectives may be made public so that the citizens have their say in the matters military. An honest, unbiased and rational analysis is possible only when sufficient data is available.. At present, available data on defence expenditure is too insufficient for the citizen to draw any meaningful conclusion. The Government need to come forward with more information for the people so that they have a sense of participation in building tomorrow's defence.

[mukto-mona] Re: Obama Zombies - or Republican Robots?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48965

There had to be a chest-thumping convert to the new Obama faith to jump in to equate any criticism of the new messiah with bombing Iraq or whatever. There had to be a load of illogic from this individual member of this political cult to scream from the rooftops, analyses from respectable newspapers be damned.

Yeah, Asgor, your criticism is taken with the respect that it deserves. Rail on. It is funniest when a fanatic puts on a clown show.

All time classic creationist pwnage
June 24th, 2008 by Ben Goldacre in bad science |

Richard Lenski is a biologist who recently found evidence for the
emergence of new traits among E.coli bacteria, in a fascinating
experiment which he has described in a paper in PNAS (best lay
coverage here). His results look a bit like evolution. You will note
that his paper includes the original data.

Andrew Schlafly is a startlingly predictable right wing christian
activist who runs Conservapedia. I highly recommend a look around
there if you've not already had the pleasure, because even the people
who run Conservapedia find it hard to tell whether the edits are
being made by god-fearing americans or naughty satirists.

Schlafly read Lenski. He got angry. He demanded the original data. It
was pointed out to him that the original data was in the paper. He
demanded the original data again. With menaces.

The following exchange is mirrored humbly and verbatim in case of
disappearance. It represents pwnage on a scale most of us can only
dream of.

First letter
June 13, 2008

Dear Professor Lenski,

Skepticism has been expressed on Conservapedia about your claims, and
the significance of your claims, that E. Coli bacteria had an
evolutionary beneficial mutation in your study. Specifically, we
wonder about the data supporting your claim that one of your colonies
of E. Coli developed the ability to absorb citrate, something not
found in wild E. Coli, at around 31,500 generations. In addition,
there is skepticism that 3 new and useful proteins appeared in the
colony around generation 20,000. A recent article about your claims
appears in New Scientist here:

http://www.newscientist.com/channel/life/dn14094-bacteria-make-major-
evolutionary-shift-in-the-lab.html

Submission guidelines for the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Science state that "(viii) Materials and Data Availability. To allow
others to replicate and build on work published in PNAS, authors must
make materials, data, and associated protocols available to readers.
Authors must disclose upon submission of the manuscript any
restrictions on the availability of materials or information." Also,
your work was apparently funded by taxpayers, providing further
reason for making the data publicly available.

Please post the data supporting your remarkable claims so that we can
review it, and note where in the data you find justification for your
conclusions.

I will post your reply, or lack of reply, on www.conservapedia.com .
Thank you.

Andy Schlafly, B.S.E., J.D. Conservapedia

First Reply
Dear Mr. Schlafly:

I suggest you might want to read our paper itself, which is available
for download at most university libraries and is also posted as
publication #180 on my website. Here's a brief summary that addresses
your three points.

1) "… your claims, that E. Coli bacteria had an evolutionary
beneficial mutation in your study." We (my group and scientific
collaborators) have already published several papers that document
beneficial mutations in our long-term experiment. These papers
provide exact details on the identity of the mutations, as well as
genetic constructions where we have produced genotypes that differ by
single mutations, then compete them, demonstrating that the mutations
confer an advantage under the environmental conditions of the
experiment. See papers # 122, 140, 155, 166, and 178 referenced on my
website. In the latest paper, you will see that we make no claim to
having identified the genetic basis of the mutations observed in this
study. However, we have found a number of mutant clones that have
heritable differences in behavior (growth on citrate), and which
confer a clear advantage in the environment where they evolved, which
contains citrate. Our future work will seek to identify the
responsible mutations.

2. "Specifically, we wonder about the data supporting your claim that
one of your colonies of E. Coli developed the ability to absorb
citrate, something not found in wild E. Coli, at around 31,500
generations." You will find all the relevant methods and data
supporting this claim in our paper. We also establish in our paper,
through various phenotypic and genetic markers, that the Cit+ mutant
was indeed a descendant of the original strain used in our
experiments.

3. "In addition, there is skepticism that 3 new and useful proteins
appeared in the colony around generation 20,000." We make no such
claim anywhere in our paper, nor do I think it is correct. Proteins
do not "appear out of the blue", in any case. We do show that what we
call a "potentiated" genotype had evolved by generation 20,000 that
had a greater propensity to produce Cit+ mutants. We also show that
the dynamics of appearance of Cit+ mutants in the potentiated
genotypes are highly suggestive of the requirement for two additional
mutations to yield the resulting Cit+ trait. Moreover, we found that
Cit+ mutants, when they first appeared, were often rather weak at
using citrate. At least the main Cit+ line that we studied underwent
an additional mutation (or mutations) that refined that ability and
led to a large improvement in growth on citrate. All these issues and
the supporting methods and data are covered in our paper.

Sincerely,

Richard Lenski

Second letter
Dear Prof. Lenski,

This is my second request for your data underlying your recent
paper, "Historical contingency and the evolution of a key innovation
in an experimental population of Escherichia coli," published in PNAS
(June 10, 2008) and reported in New Scientist ("Bacteria make major
evolutionary shift in lab," June 9, 2008).
http://myxo.css.msu.edu/lenski/pdf/2008,%20PNAS,%20Blount%20et%
20al.pdf

http://www.newscientist.com/channel/life/dn14094-bacteria-make-major-
evolutionary-shift-in-the-lab.html

Your work was taxpayer-funded, and PNAS represents that its authors
will make underlying data available. I'd like to review the data
myself and ensure availability for others, including experts and my
students. Others have expressed interest in access to the data in
addition to myself, and your website seems well-suited for public
release of these data.

If the data are voluminous, then I particularly request access to the
data that was made available to the peer reviewers of your paper, and
to the data relating to the period during which the bacterial colony
supposedly developed Cit+. As before, I'm requesting the organized
data themselves, not the graphs and summaries set forth in the paper
and referenced in your first reply to me. Note that several times
your paper expressly states, "data not shown."

Given that this is my second request for the data, a clear answer is
requested as to whether you will make the key underlying data
available for independent review. Your response, or lack thereof,
will be posted due to the public interest in this issue. Thank you.

Second reply
Dear Mr. Schlafly:

I tried to be polite, civil and respectful in my reply to your first
email, despite its rude tone and uninformed content. Given the
continued rudeness of your second email, and the willfully ignorant
and slanderous content on your website, my second response will be
less polite. I expect you to post my response in its entirety; if
not, I will make sure that is made publicly available through other
channels.

I offer this lengthy reply because I am an educator as well as a
scientist. It is my sincere hope that some readers might learn
something from this exchange, even if you do not.

First, it seems that reading might not be your strongest suit given
your initial letter, which showed that you had not read our paper,
and given subsequent conversations with your followers, in which you
wrote that you still had not bothered to read our paper. You
wrote: "I did skim Lenski's paper …" If you have not even read the
original paper, how do you have any basis of understanding from which
to question, much less criticize, the data that are presented
therein?

Second, your capacity to misinterpret and/or misrepresent facts is
plain in the third request in your first letter, where you said: "In
addition, there is skepticism that 3 new and useful proteins appeared
in the colony around generation 20,000." That statement was followed
by a link to a news article from NewScientist that briefly reported
on our work. I assumed you had simply misunderstood that article,
because there is not even a mention of proteins anywhere in the news
article. As I replied, "We make no such claim anywhere in our paper,
nor do I think it is correct. Proteins do not `appear out of the
blue', in any case." So where did your confused assertion come from?
It appears to have come from one of your earlier discussions, in
which an acoltye (Able806, who to his credit at least seems to have
attempted to read our paper) wrote:

"I think it might be best to clarify some of Richard's work. He
started his E.Coli project in 1988 and has been running the project
for 20 years now; his protocols are available to the general public.
The New Scientist article is not very technical but the paper at PNAS
is. The change was based on one of his colonies developing the
ability to absorb citrate, something not found in wild E.Coli. This
occurred around 31,500 generations and is based on the development of
3 proteins in the E.Coli genome. What his future work will be is to
look at what caused the development of these 3 proteins around
generation 20,000 of that particular colony. …"
As further evidence of your inability to keep even a few simple facts
straight, you later wrote the following: "It [my reply] did clarify
that his claims are not as strong as some evolutionists have
insisted." But no competent biologist would, after reading our paper
with any care, insist (or even suggest) that "3 new and useful
proteins appeared in the colony around generation 20,000" or any
similar nonsense. It is only in your letter, and in your acolyte's
confused interpretation of our paper, that I have ever seen such a
claim. Am I or the reporter for NewScientist somehow responsible for
the confusion that reflects your own laziness and apparent inability
to distinguish between a scientific paper, a news article, and a
confused summary posted by an acolyte on your own website?

Third, it is apparent to me, and many others who have followed this
exchange and your on-line discussions of how to proceed, that you are
not acting in good faith in requests for data. From the posted
discussion on your web site, it is obvious that you lack any
expertise in the relevant fields. Several of your acolytes have
pointed this out to you, and that your motives are unclear or
questionable at best, but you and your cronies dismissed their
concerns as rants and even expelled some of them from posting on your
website. [Ed.: citation omitted due to spam filter] Several also
pointed out that I had very quickly and straightforwardly responded
that the methods and data supporting the evolution of the citrate-
utilization capacity are already provided in our paper. One poster in
your discussions, Aaronp, wrote:

"I read Lenski's paper, and as a trained microbiologist, I thought
that it was both thorough and well done. His claims are backed by
good data, namely that which was presented in the figures. I went
through each of the figures after Aschlafly said that they were
uninformative. Actually, they are basic figures that show the
population explosion of the bacterial cultures after the Cit+
mutation occurred. These figures show that the cultures increased in
size and mass at a given timepoint, being able to do so because they
had evolved a mechanism to utilize a new nutrient, without the
assistance of helper plasmids. … Lenksi's paper, while not the most
definite I've seen, is still a very well-researched paper that
supports its claims nicely."
(As far as I saw, Aaronp is the only poster who asserted any
expertise in microbiology.) As further evidence of the absence of
good-faith discussion about our research, in the discussion thread
that began even before you sent your first email to me, I counted the
words "fraud" or "fraudulent" being used more than 10 times,
including one acolyte, TonyT, who says bluntly that I am "clearly a
fraudulent hack." In the discussion thread that also includes
comments after my first reply, the number of times those same words
are used has increased to 20, with the word "hoax" also now entering
the discussion. A few posters wisely counseled against such slander
but that did not deter you. I must say, it is surprising that someone
with a law degree would make, and allow on his website, so many nasty
comments that implicitly and even explicitly impugn my integrity, and
by extension that of my collaborators, without any grounds whatsoever
and reflecting only your dogmatic adherence to certain beliefs.

Finally, let me now turn to our data. As I said before, the relevant
methods and data about the evolution of the citrate-using bacteria
are in our paper. In three places in our paper, we did say "data not
shown", which is common in scientific papers owing to limitations in
page length, especially for secondary or minor points. None of the
places where we made such references concern the existence of the
citrate-using bacteria; they concern only certain secondary
properties of those bacteria. We will gladly post those additional
data on my website.

It is my impression that you seem to think we have only paper and
electronic records of having seen some unusual E. coli. If we made
serious errors or misrepresentations, you would surely like to find
them in those records. If we did not, then – as some of your acolytes
have suggested – you might assert that our records are themselves
untrustworthy because, well, because you said so, I guess. But
perhaps because you did not bother even to read our paper, or perhaps
because you aren't very bright, you seem not to understand that we
have the actual, living bacteria that exhibit the properties reported
in our paper, including both the ancestral strain used to start this
long-term experiment and its evolved citrate-using descendants. In
other words, it's not that we claim to have glimpsed "a unicorn in
the garden" – we have a whole population of them living in my lab! [

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unicorn_in_the_Garden] And lest you
accuse me further of fraud, I do not literally mean that we have
unicorns in the lab. Rather, I am making a literary allusion. [

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allusion]

One of your acolytes, Dr. Richard Paley, actually grasped this point.
He does not appear to understand the practice and limitations of
science, but at least he realizes that we have the bacteria, and that
they provide "the real data that we [that's you and your gang] need".
Here's what this Dr. Paley had to say:

"I think there's a great deal of misunderstanding here from the
critics of Mr. Schlafly and obfuscation on the part of Prof. Lenski
and his supporters. The real data that we need are not in the paper.
Rather they are in the bacteria used in the experiments themselves.
Prof. Lenski claims that these bacteria `evolved' novel traits and
that these were preceded by the evolution of `potentiated genotypes',
from which the traits could be `reevolved' using preserved colonies
from those generations. But how are we to know if these traits
weren't `potentiated' by the Creator when He designed the bacteria
thousands of years ago, such that they would eventually reveal
themselves when the time was right? The only way this can be settled
is if we have access to the genetic sequences of the bacteria
colonies so that we can apply CSI techniques and determine if
these `potentiated genotypes' originated through blind chance or
intelligence. But with the physical specimens in the hands of
Darwinists, who claim they will get around to the sequencing at some
unspecifed future time, how can we trust that this data will be
forthcoming and forthright? Thus, Prof. Lenski et al. should supply
Conservapedia, as stewards, with samples of the preserved E. coli
colonies so that the data can be accessible to unbiased researchers
outside of the hegemony of the Darwinian academia, even if it won't
be put to immediate examination by Mr. Schlafly. This is simply about
keeping tax-payer-funded scientists honest."
So, will we share the bacteria? Of course we will, with competent
scientists. Now, if I was really mean, I might only share the
ancestral strain, and let the scientists undertake the 20 years of
our experiment. Or if I was only a little bit mean, maybe I'd also
send the potentiated bacteria, and let the recipients then repeat the
several years of incredibly pain-staking work that my superb doctoral
student, Zachary Blount, performed to test some 40 trillion
(40,000,000,000,000) cells, which generated 19 additional citrate-
using mutants. But I'm a nice guy, at least when treated with some
common courtesy, so if a competent scientist asks for them, I would
even send a sample of the evolved E. coli that now grows vigorously
on citrate. A competent microbiologist, perhaps requiring the
assistance of a competent molecular geneticist, would readily confirm
the following properties reported in our paper: (i) The ancestral
strain does not grow in DM0 (zero glucose, but containing citrate),
the recipe for which can be found on my web site, except leaving the
glucose out of the standard recipe as stated in our paper. (ii) The
evolved citrate-using strain, by contrast, grows well in that exact
same medium. (iii) To confirm that the evolved strain is not some
contaminating species but is, in fact, derived from the ancestral
strain in our study, one could check a number of traits and genes
that identify the ancestor as E. coli, and the evolved strains as a
descendant thereof, as reported in our paper. (iv) One could also
sequence the pykF and nadR genes in the ancestor and evolved citrate-
using strains. One would find that the evolved bacteria have
mutations in each of these genes. These mutations precisely match
those that we reported in our previous work, and they identify the
evolved citrate-using mutants as having evolved in the population
designated Ara-3 of the long-term evolution experiment, as opposed to
any of the other 11 populations in that experiment. And one could go
on and on from there to confirm the findings in our paper, and
perhaps obtain additional data of the sort that we are currently
pursuing.

Before I could send anyone any bacterial strains, in order to comply
with good scientific practices I would require evidence of the
requesting scientist's credentials including: (i) affiliation with an
appropriate unit in some university or research center with
appropriate facilities for storing (-80ºC freezer), handling
(incubators, etc.), and disposing of bacteria (autoclave); and (ii)
some evidence, such as peer-reviewed publications, that indicate that
the receiving scientist knows how to work with bacteria, so that I
and my university can be sure we are sending biological materials to
someone that knows how to handle them. By the way, our strains are
not derived from one of the pathogenic varieties of E. coli that are
a frequent cause of food-borne illnesses. However, even non-
pathogenic strains may cause problems for those who are immune-
compromised or otherwise more vulnerable to infection. Also, my
university requires that a Material Transfer Agreement be executed
before we can ship any strains. That agreement would not constrain a
receiving scientist from publishing his or her results. However, if
an incompetent or fraudulent hack (note that I make no reference to
any person, as this is strictly a hypothetical scenario, one that I
doubt would occur) were to make false or misleading claims about our
strains, then I'm confident that some highly qualified scientists
would join the fray, examine the strains, and sort out who was right
and who was wrong. That's the way science works.

I would also generally ask what the requesting scientist intends to
do with our strains. Why? It helps me to gauge the requester's
expertise. I might be able to point out useful references, for
example. Moreover, as I've said, we are continuing our work with
these strains, on multiple fronts, as explained in considerable
detail in the Discussion section of our paper. I would not be happy
to see our work "scooped" by another team – especially for the sake
of the outstanding students and postdocs in my group who are hard at
work on these fronts. However, that request to allow us to proceed,
without risk of being scooped on work in which we have made a
substantial investment of time and effort, would be just that: a
request. In other words, we would respect PNAS policy to share those
strains with any competent scientist who complied with my
university's requirements for the MTA and any other relevant legal
restrictions. If any such request requires substantial time or
resources (we have thousands of samples from this and many other
experiments), then of course I would expect the recipient to bear
those costs.

So there you have it. I know that I've been a bit less polite in this
response than in my previous one, but I'm still behaving far more
politely than you deserve given your rude, willfully ignorant, and
slanderous behavior. And I've spent far more time responding than you
deserve. However, as I said at the outset, I take education
seriously, and I know some of your acolytes still have the ability
and desire to think, as do many others who will read this exchange.

Sincerely,
Richard Lenski

P.S. Did you know that your own bowels harbor something like a
billion (1,000,000,000) E. coli at this very moment? So remember to
wash your hands after going to the toilet, as I hope your mother
taught you. Simple calculations imply that there are something like
10^20 = 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 E. coli alive on our planet at
any moment. Even if they divide just once per day, and given a
typical mutation rate of 10^-9 or 10^-10 per base-pair per
generation, then pretty much every possible double mutation would
occur every day or so. That's a lot of opportunity for evolution.

P.P.S. I hope that some readers might get a chuckle out of this
story. The same Sunday (15 June 2008) that you and some of your
acolytes were posting and promoting scurrilous attacks on me and our
research (wasn't that a bit disrespectful of the Sabbath?), I was in
a church attending a wedding. And do you know what Old Testament
lesson was read? It was Genesis 1:27-28, in which God created Man and
Woman. It's a very simple and lovely story, and I did not ask any
questions, storm out, or demand the evidence that it happened as
written at a time when science did not yet exist. I was there in the
realm of spirituality and mutual respect, not confusing a house of
religion for a science class or laboratory. And it was a beautiful
wedding, too.

P.P.P.S. You may be unable to understand, or unwilling to accept,
that evolution occurs. And yet, life evolves! [

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_pur_si_muove] From the content on your
website, it is clear that you, like many others, view God as the
Creator of the Universe. I respect that view. I find it baffling,
however, that someone can worship God as the all-mighty Creator
while, at the same time, denying even the possibility (not to mention
the overwhelming evidence) that God's Creation involved evolution. It
is as though a person thinks that God must have the same limitations
when it comes to creation as a person who is unable to understand, or
even attempt to understand, the world in which we live. Isn't that
view insulting to God?

P.P.P.P.S. I noticed that you say that one of your favorite articles
on your website is the one on "Deceit." That article begins as
follows: "Deceit is the deliberate distortion or denial of the truth
with an intent to trick or fool another. Christianity and Judaism
teach that deceit is wrong. For example, the Old Testament
says, `Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.'" You
really should think more carefully about what that commandment means
before you go around bearing false witness against others.

[mukto-mona] Qawwali at Hindu Temple

QAWWALI AT HINDU MANDIR IN MONTREAL
Daya Varma (http://www.insafbulletin.net/archives/341#more-341)

I got an email from Arif Khan, one of the organizers of the Kabir Cultural Center,  informing me of "Qawaali at Hindu Mandir in Montreal" that was held on April 6, 2008.  I found it an exciting event and sent this information to a few friends; here are their responses:

Vinod Mubayi  (co-editor of the Bulletin) wrote from New York: We must make sure to include in the next INSAF Bulletin. We need news like this to lift up our hearts.  "Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak!" But a bit of background would be useful in setting the context of the letter.

Zafar Iqbal wroite from Washintgon, DC: Thanks for the info. It is a great idea. I WISH I could be there. We are organizing a Hindi-Urdu mushaira on 2nd August. We are also honoring Professor  Satypal Anand in that event.

Arif Khan forwarded me the following e-mail to whom he had sent the message: "This has to be one of their most beautiful mehfils that I have heard. Not just because of the the music. Not just because of the brilliant rendition of Chaap Tilak and their use of Kabir's Dohas to create a context. Not just because of the uniqueness of Teri Yad hai Mun ka Chain (notice the taal. It is not the typical dhamaal). It is because they have re-enlivened the essence of that great edifice, Indo-Islamic civilization, which reached out to the hearts, minds and souls of people, no matter what their conviction. This is what the Auliyas, sufis, faqirs, malangs, dervishes, yogis and all men and women of sprituality did, drawing upon the fertility of the cultures of India, stirring the spirits and soothing the souls of all peoples. I cried from joy, listening to this, realizing that in this day, where there is so much talk and so little understanding, that the messages of centuries ago are being preserved and building spiritual and cultural bonds among all peoples.

Munshi Razziudin's soul must be brimming with joy and peace on beholding his sons at this maqaam. They have covered such a long journey from that cold, austere winter of 1990, when they did their first European tour and struggled to find their place under the sun. Allah in ko aur kamiyabian dey, kyun kay in ki niyyatain paak hain."

Below is a description of the event by T.K. Raghunathan, the Secretary of Kabir Cultural Center, which had invited the artists:

On Sunday April 6, 20008 there was a unique event in Montreal. The hundred-plus gathering who had assembled there for the normal Hindu Mandir service were treated to a unique Qawwali rendering by the famous Farid Ayaz & Abu Mohammed ensemble from Karachi, Pakistan.

Farid Ayaz & Abu Mohammed are sons of the famous Munshi Raziyuddin who himself was a great Qawwali singer and admirer of Kabir's poetry and philosophy. Farid and his brothers, a group of eight performers, had been invited by Kabir Cultural Centre of Montreal for a concert on 5 April 2008. The concert which was held at the Oscar Peterson Hall was entitled 'Sufi Eternal' and was a great success with the combined audience of Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis as well as local mainstream Canadians. The hall with a capacity of over 500 seats was almost full.

After the concert was over, Mr. Subhash Khanna, the Chairman of the West Island Hindu Mandir in Dollard des Ormeaux made a request to the organizers of Kabir Cultural Centre to bring the artists to the temple next day. The schedules had to be rearranged as this was a most unexpected request. The artists readily agreed to rearrange their schedules in order to be at the temple the following day.

On arrival at the temple around noon, the artists were very warmly received by the temple authorities and welcomed with the chanting of auspicious prayers. Then they were taken to the main hall where there was a gathering not only of regular devotees but a group of children who were trained to sing bhajans and they had just finished performing. Mr. Raghunathan of Kabir Cultural Centre made a brief introduction of the artists and the relevance of the artists being at the temple and the belief that 'Ram aur Rahim mein antar nahin'.

The artists expressed enormous joy at being able to sing at a Hindu Mandir and started performing. As the singing progressed, the audience showed their spontaneous appreciation by placing their contributions in front of them. The artists concluded their presentation with a song that they said was being sung in their families for the past three hundred years, namely a bhajan in praise of Kishan.

After the concert, Farid Ayaz was presented with a shawl and a honorarium to the chanting of Mantras from Hindu Scriptures and the other members of the group were also honored. They were taken to the basement where volunteers from the Mandir entertained them with food and the artists had their lunch in the company of Mr. Subhash Khanna and other the executives of the Hindu Mandir, as well as Mr. Arif Ali Khan and Mr. Raghunathan of Kabir Cultural Centre."

[mukto-mona] Obama Zombies - or Republican Robots?

Supporting Obama is a vote against Bush and the neocons. Obama does
not have to be a saint. Any average human being with all the flaws is
a better option han the necons that the present replublican party
represents. The dem delegates have given us Obama as the option. If
Any XYZ was the dem nominee then the same so called Obama zombies would
support the XYZ. It is the neocon zombies or Clinton zombies (who are
mortified at Clinton not getting the nomination) that so infuriated at
Obama and Obama supporters. Obama is just a politician and an average
(or slightly above average) man. But the final verdict on this should
wait until he is tested out if he is elcted. But even being an average
man he is infinitely more preferable than the neocon beasta. Bush Cheney
and his neocon cabal have wreaked havoc on US and the planet. Miliions if
innocent Iraquis have died too, Iraq has been totally devastated. All
this on the false pretext that 9/11 and Iraq was connected. Just so that
the big oil companies can profit and US can control the oil fields.
Obama is an average man with all the foibles of a politician. But he has
inspired a tide of anti Republican/McCain (who represents the neocon
republicans) sentiment. If Obama inspires too many people then he cannot
the same people when he gets elected. If supporting Obama to vote against
the necons is zombielike then no less zombielike is a kneejerk criticism
of eveything Obama. These anti Obama zombies are no different from the
republican robots who would buy any crap that the necons dish out at
them like a programmed robot.
