[ALOCHONA] New law bans parties' front organisations

New law bans parties' front organisations

The cabinet approved the Representation of the People Ordinance 2008 in principle Sunday, which bans political parties from running front organisations, said a government spokesman. After a meeting of the council of advisers at the Chief Adviser's Office, the CA's press secretary Syed Fahim Munaim told reporters that the ordinance was sent to the law ministry for vetting. Munaim said the ordinance would likely get final approval and be published in a gazette by the end of this month.

According to the ordinance, a national polls aspirant has to attach a document carrying signatures of 1 percent of the total voters in his constituency with his nomination paper. False information on the nomination paper may lead to cancellation of one's candidacy, Munaim said. If two candidates bag the equal highest number of voters, a re-election will be held, Munaim said.

The ordinance says that a person sentenced to a minimum of two years in jail in criminal cases will not be eligible to contest the next national polls. Besides, those already served their sentences would have to wait for five years for contesting an election from the day his jail term expired.

Besides, those adopted foreign citizenships and those were declared bankrupt by court, sacked from government offices on charges of corruption or forced to go on leave would have to wait five years to contest the polls.

Apart from this, those who went into voluntary retirement will be able to contest the polls three years after retirement. People defaulting on loan repayments for six months before the time of nomination paper submission will not be able to contest the polls.

Any person declared war criminal by a local or international court will not be eligible to run for elections. Provisions were added to the Representation of the People Ordinance to maintain transparency in candidacy, nomination and fund of political parties, Munaim said.

A party will not be allowed to form an alliance with any unregistered party. A candidate will not be able to enter the election race from more than three constituencies. If anybody signs up for more than three constituencies, all of his applications will be cancelled, according to the ordinance. The ordinance has a provision for 'no' vote for the voters who are undecided over a candidate.

If the number of 'no vote' exceeds 50 percent of the total votes, the returning officer will cancel voting of the constituency and announce a re-election by informing the Election Commission.

[ALOCHONA] Increased salinity changes vegetation pattern

Increased salinity changes vegetation pattern
...concentration of salt has become so high in the land that only saline tolerant plants can survive it

Shrimp farming increases salinity of soil resulting in saline-tolerant species of trees growing in abundance. This photo shows geowa trees growing on the banks of a canal at Bara Khalsi in Khulna. Photo: STAR

Geowa plants are abundant on the banks of Khalsi canal. Most of these species are less than a decade old; many others are growing for only couple of years. Not only geowa, some golpata (nypah) and other saline-tolerant plants are visible here and there along the canal.

The canal is named after Khalsi village in Dakop upazila in Khulna where the residents are mostly Hindus.

During a stroll around the village it was seen geowa is the main tree there. Locals say vegetation pattern of Khalsi has entirely changed in just 20 years. Just two decades ago, like other typical Hindu majority villages, Khalsi was full of Tulsi, joba, sheuli and coconut, banana, mango, wood apple and other fruit trees essential for worshipping the Hindu gods and goddesses.

But now concentration of salt has become so high in the land that only saline tolerant plants can survive it.

"We had 45 coconut trees. But those started dying slowly since saline water entered the village. Now we have some other fruit trees with no produce," said housewife Mira Ray.

During the 80s when shrimp farming was becoming popular, influential people forced small farmers to lease out their land for the venture. A number of the farmers started shrimp farming at will, but many others were forced into the business flooding their cropland with saline water.

Initially, shrimp farming yielded a good profit. But soon it became a losing concern due to virus infection and the farmers realised that producing crops was a better option.

"I remember just immediate before first shrimp farming we got 1,000 mounds of rice from 60 bighas of land. Now our land has increased to 94 bighas and produce comes down to only 100 mounds," said Dr Achintya Bhowmik, principal of a local graduation college.

Krishna Pada Mandal echoed the same. He cultivated rice in 10 bighas and harvested only 11 mounds rice whereas a farmer from saline-free land got over 100 mounds from the same quantity of land.

Now villagers want to get rid of saline water and saline water-based shrimp farming like those of Bazua who have successfully rid their cropland of saline water and are making huge money cultivating rice, watermelon and pumpkin.

But influential shrimp farmers want to continue the business anyhow. The villagers allege an influential businessman from Dhaka is producing shrimp taking lease of their land at Tk 1,000 yearly for per bigha.

The villagers say the businessman cultivates shrimp on only 40 acres of land through irrigating saline water from the Kazibachha river. But about 700 acres of land around is getting increased amount of salinity.

The villagers say local civil and police administration is working for the influential shrimp cultivators, who are also leaders of major political parties. These leaders are filing cases against marginal farmers and police are taking bribe from them, they claim.

A farmer who is protesting against the salinity aggression said if someone wants to cultivate rice in an acre of land, they have to spend Tk 21,000 for power-tiller, Tk 2,400 for seeds, Tk 3,000 for labours and Tk 1,000 for irrigation.

In the end, they will possibly get around 45 mounds of rice from single-crop land which is worth no less than Tk 40,000 at current market price. And in this area farmers can grow three crops annually.

But now farmers who have one acre of land are hardly getting only Tk 5,000-6,000 a year.

SUCCESS OF BAZUA VILLAGE

Locals of Bazua union, just three kilometres down from Khalsi have successfully got rid of saline water and are cultivating crops there. Vegetation pattern is different there as geowa and other saline water varieties are hardly visible.

The farmers in Bazua said they get around Tk 75,000 by selling watermelons in one acre of land in addition to Tk 25,000 from over 30 mounds of rice.

Parimal Mandal from Bazua said they are doing fine cultivating sweet water varieties.

Gouranga Prasad Roy, convener of salt-water prevention committee in Bazua, said the small and landless farmers protested against the shrimp farming.

"Commoners and landless people don't want shrimp farming as it only makes the rich people richer. But by cultivating watermelon and rice the marginal farmers are making some money themselves."

[mukto-mona] Whither Indian IT?

On the real state of India's IT-power, this is a very different piece by an IIT-computer engineer who spent 25 years abroad, mostly in the US, but went around Europe, South America, the Gulf and Asian countries as a consultant. Presently, he is in Kolkata, associated with Bandana Infotech, a small but technically sound IT company.

SR

In Perspective: (http://deccanherald.com/Content/Jul142008/editpage2008071378620.asp)
Two faces of the Indian engineer by Sitanshu Ray
Pressures of employers in India or US have promoted a sub-standard market of IT talent.
When  dot.com revolution was in full throttle ten years ago, a conversation between two Indians, seated next to me, made for interesting eavesdrop. I was  travelling by New Jersey Transit Train Service back to Princeton. I could guess they were in the IT profession. The Y2K mirage was on. Companies in the US were hiring thousands of IT engineers from India to ride these dot.com and Y2K waves. Indian IT industry was smiling.

Santosh's cell phone rang. He asked his friend Milind to be quiet. He answers on the phone – "Yes Sir, this is Santosh". He said that he had eight  years of experience with Java. Obviously a technical interview was being conducted. Finally Santosh said that he could give the mobile number of his manager for a reference. He then cupped the speaker, and told  Milind that he would give his mobile number to the interviewer . He advised  Milind to tell the caller that he was his manager.

After five minutes, Milind received a call from the prospective employer, and he promptly replied that he would happily recommend Santosh for the job.

This deceptive duo from India operating in the US is but a small example of the massive fraud and deception being carried out by Indian IT workers, organisations and placement company owners. Having worked in the US and Canada for the 18 years, I came across hundreds of such cases. Imagine the agony of numerous genuine engineers and scientists from India, who travelled to the West and painstakingly built up the brand name of rare-breed techies through hard work and dedication.

In 2002, NJ, USA, I  was returning from a party, and stopped at a gas station. The person who was filling gas asked me if I was an Indian. He told me that he was a Java programmer and was looking for work, while making his living at this gas station. I have met scores of such Indian IT engineers working at such places and the current economic crisis in the US has only aggravated this situation.

Why should we Indians resort of these practices?  The young Indian engineer does what the system demands him to do. Because of the pressures of a materialistic society and their employers in India or in the US, they have to stoop so low.

These are two faces of the Indian IT engineer. One that is described in his/her resume. The other is the sub-standard engineer performing at work. Unfortunately, the second one is the real face. I have been in the industry for 27 years, and I have yet to see a world class "Software Product from India". All this hype about the Indian IT industry is created by self serving corporations that need to promote this substandard culture. But the truth is emerging. The changing political and economic climate in the US and other Western nations will stop this practice in a big way in the future. The flow of outsourcing tide is away from India.

IT  giants give the so-called "captive training" to their new hires. They are subjected to gruelling hours of training by sub-standard trainers. And these hires are projected as experienced "software professionals". Their resumes are embellished and through "labour arbitrage" the companies make billions. The solution is to fix our education system. Stop and audit private companies running education as a business to fatten their books. Check their standards of quality, their faculty.

Indian education has shifted from a "talent meritocracy" to a "exam passing meritocracy. Most educational institutions today teach you how to pass exams rather being productive at the work place. This has resulted in the huge "employability gap" between what is taught and what is required within the industry. We must reverse this trend.

Certificates and degrees issued by prestigious educational institutes must have RF IDs to authenticate them at any place in the world, so that no one can make duplicates. Fix our government schools and attract talent from all over the world to teach in these schools. Build a national database of real talent and let that talent be allowed to seen by all companies needing them. We would love to see only one face of the Indian IT engineer — the honest one.

[ALOCHONA] Re: A disgraceful comment to the nation by Moeen U Ahmed

Today Moeen U Ahmed addressed the fsact that some people do sell
their vote. Their vote is sold for a cup of coffee or a sari or a
lie or a promise. Their vote is sold because they are desperate or
they couldn't care less or they believe that something is better
than nothing.

Nothing Moeen U Ahmed said indicated that he was referring to a
majority of the people. Salman F Rahman could not buy enough votes -
but he did buy some votes.

Yes - maybe Hasina could not buy enough votes.

The people who really sell their votes are tthe chamchas and
criminals in BNP and AL who vote because they intend to get a
finanacial benefit from voting for their local 'netha'.

Did BNP ministers pay Tariq so that he would 'allow' them to be
ministers? If true then they sold their vote too.

How bizarre that blind AL and BNP supporters talk as if Bangladesh
has a 'normal' operating environment that has been ruined by the
CTG.

Sound like the cunning talk of Nazmul Huda, beloved netha of BNP...

He's still walking... but at least his wife isn't...

[ALOCHONA] [notun_bangladesh] Re: On Transit

Seems like not many care about Tareq's health. Of course Khondaker
does but he's an idiot. He can't fight for his own son's freedom but
he fights for the freedom of his paymaster! Pathetic!

Its the 13th of July today. Lets see how many Deshi people unitedly
give ultimatum to release those who have ruined BNP.... Not long -
just over 2 weeks to the 30th of July.

Yea - just start to beat the susils... Its democracy Deshi style...
Just like our susils were beaten by the Pakistanis in 71 eh?

Funny. Can the CTG really be nervious about headless chickens like
Hanan Shah and Khondaker?

Maybe : )

It has to be like the historic Farakka Movement by Bhasani; a

call this a Taliban movement. But whatever, Bangladeshis have to

[ALOCHONA] Re: This CTG has proved 1: Every political party must have strong foreign branch

Journalists were attacked/killed during AL and BNP governments. The
attackers were invariably politcally connected and politically
protected.

Many journalists, and newspapers, are too partisan. Many journalists
can be bought and sold.

All this fancy talk about liberty and freedom - its just rubbish. As
if there is no anti CTG talk in the media!

When you steal from thieves the thieves suddenly start talking about
property rights!

There are no foreign units of the CTG - that is absurd. However for
decades there have been foreign units of AL and BNP. And these units
have almost never done anything for the foreign communities. Instead
they have used new found wealth and new found education to bolster
rubbish politics. They are defined by infighting, petty jealousies,
clashing egos, wasted funds, wasted chances, cycles of violence and
social unrest. They should all be closed down. But the upper jerks
in AL and BNP in Desh just to love to fly around, get flowers from
fawning fools, pocket some cash and steal soap from any hotel they
stay in.

Tell it like it is baby.

Wanna suckle?

[mukto-mona] Article 9 : Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete? Yes. declares a philosopher...

Article 9 : Does science make belief in Allah/God obsolete?

 Yes. declares a rationalist philosopher...

Once upon a time there were a number of strong pseudo-scientific arguments for the existence of an Allah or God. One of the oldest and most prevalent is the argument from design. Most people look at the complexity of the world and cannot conceive of how it could have come about except by the action of a being or force of great power and intelligence.
The design argument received perhaps its most brilliant exposition in the work of the Anglican archdeacon William Paley. In his «
Natural Theology, or Evidences of the Existence and Attributes of the Deity Collected from the Appearance of Nature », first published in 1802, Paley wrote about finding both a stone and a watch while crossing a heath. Though the stone would be regarded as a simple part of nature, no one would question that the watch is an artifact, an instrument built by human intelligence, designed for the purpose of telling time. Paley then proposed that objects of nature, such as the human eye, give every indication of being similar contrivances. Although this is also a worthwhile question as to how such an Allah / God could have designed such complicated and details structure ; and who designed such an intelligence designer!

When Charles Darwin entered Cambridge in 1827 he was assigned to the same rooms in Christ's College occupied by William Paley seventy years earlier. By that time the syllabus included the study of Paley's works, and Darwin was deeply impressed. He remarked that Paley's work "gave me as much delight as did Euclid."

Yet Darwin ultimately discovered the answer to Paley and showed how complex systems can evolve naturally from simpler ones without design or plan. The mechanism he proposed in 1859 in «
The Origin of Species » (inferred independently by Alfred Russel Wallace) was natural selection, by which organisms accumulate changes that enable them to survive and have progeny that maintain those features.

But, as Darwin recognised, a serious objection to evolution existed based on the known physics of his time. Calculations by the great physicist William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) estimated ages for the sun that were far too short for natural selection to operate. However, at the time, nuclear energy was unknown. When this new form of energy was discovered early in the twentieth century, physicists estimated that the manner in which energy was released by nuclear reactions correctly explain that the sun and other stars would last billions of years as stable energy sources and that the ages for this activity of the sun that were appropriate for natural selection to operate.

Prior to the twentieth century, the simple fact that the universe contains matter also provided strong evidence for a creation. At the time it was believed that matter was conserved, and so the matter of the universe had to come from somewhere. However, in 1905 Einstein showed that matter could be created from energy.

In 1929, astronomer Edwin Hubble reported that the galaxies were moving away from one another at speeds approximately proportional to their distance, indicating that the universe was expanding. This provided the earliest evidence for the Big Bang. An expanding universe could have started with low entropy and still have formed localised order.

Extrapolating what we know from modern cosmology back to the earliest definable moment, we find that the universe began in a state of maximum disorder. It contained the maximum entropy for the tiny region of space. Once the universe exploded out of chaos, we no longer have total disorder; but regularity dominates the universe. Most of the matter of the universe moves around regularly.

If he is to have any control over events so that some ultimate plan is realised, God or Allah has to poke his finger into the works amidst all this regularity. Yet there is no evidence that God pokes his finger in anyplace. The universe and life flows naturally. And humanity, although only occupying a tiny speck of dust in a vast cosmos, looks like a special gift of biological evolution, intelligent enough to observe, understand, invent and built, in fields of science as well as of society without permitting any fictional Allah/God any role of interference.

The universe visible to us contains a hundred billion galaxies, each with a hundred billion stars. But by far the greatest portion of the universe that expanded exponentially from the original chaos lies far beyond our horizon. Yet we are supposed to think that a supreme being exists who follows the path of every particle, while listening to every human thought and guiding his favourite football teams to victory. Science has not only made belief in God obsolete. It has made it incoherent.

Re: [mukto-mona] Odbhut adhar nemeche e prithibite aaj... [Bangla]

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49032

The real freedom fighters freed the land now called Bangladesh from the grip of the Pakistani occupation army. I think the Jamaati freedom fighters wanted to do just the opposite viz., giving back the freed land to their Pakistani masters. Logically this must be so given the fact that all the Jamaati leaders including Gholam Azam, Sayyidi, Nizami, etc. were the collaborators of the occupation army.
The youngest freedom fighter still living today should not be below 50. If one looked at the faces of the Jamaati Mukti Bahini members could easily figure out if they were fake. I have a feeling that they are. What can be more farcical!

Subject: Few important information about BUFLA Inaugural Ceremony
To:  Distribution

Dear Fellow BUFLA Team,

"We Stand United"

Happy Holiday. Everybody should be enjoying the (4th July) holiday  by socialization, parties, fireworks, and so many others things. Meanwhile we all preparing ourselves for the upcoming (BUFLA) Inaugural ceremony on 20th July at the Wilshire Plaza Hotel. Please, don't forget the date, mark it on your calendar and please be there on time .

We have a couple of announcements about the activities which we suggested  to practice on that occasion.

Such as:

1. First of all we all want to create an environment of unity, friendship , and mutual understanding  among us to prove that we are together and BUFLA is a  federation. We requested all BUFLA member organizations to bring a colored  display board having your organization information, policies, mission and vision, past activities with captioning and pictures. Suggested size of display board is 36x48 triple folder available at Staples, Office Depot. Imagine if we have 28 display board on that Ballroom of different color, it will definitely be a fantastic photo gallery. I have personally announced a prize for the best display. So please take it seriously, be number one and win the prize.

2.We all know about UNO,  a federation of nations, symbolizing  the federation having all country flags in front of the UN building in New York. We the BUFLA is also a federation. Each organization should have a flag but it isn't mandatory. We also requested all BUFLA organizations to provide an organizational flag on 20th July  program if possible. It will give us a feelings that we all want to do something good and we love BUFLA.

3. We are 28 organizations at this moment in BUFLA. In near future this number will be increased insha-Allah. Five officers elected from five different organizations, the rest of the 23 organizations will be considered as the executive members. So these 23 organization's leaders are requested to let us know who will represent your organization as an EC member for the next year. We have to know that ahead of time before the Inaugural ceremony, and all these 23 EC members are going to take an oath on the 20th July program. So it is highly advised to report to us the name of that person and also request them to be present on time and thier name will be announced to come on stage to take the oath. All EC members are requested to wear a suit and tie for that occasion.

4. New BUFLA Cabinet has decided to invite all 28 organizations to take part in Dialogue (Sanglap). The 1st phase of dialog  date is July 26, Saturday 7pm to 10 pm, July 27, Sunday 5pm to 10 pm, August 2, Saturday 7pm to 10 pm, and August 3, Sunday 5pm to 10 pm. So please think about the dates, and whichever is convenient for you let us know. We hope this Sanglap (Dialogue) will eliminate all of our differences, we can talk one-on-one and exchange our views and strengths for our Unity. So be positive about the Dialogue and plan ahead of time which date is good for you and prepare yourself with a lot of ideas.

Hopefully we will see you on 20th July at Wilshire Plaza Hotel on time.

God bless America
God Bless Bangladesh
God Bless BUFLA

Sincerely,

Dr. M. A. Hashem
President Elect.
Bangladesh Unity Federation of Los Angeles (BUFLA)
