[ALOCHONA] No decision on transit at this point: Touhid

No decision on transit at this point: Touhid
Dhaka to urge Delhi for measures to reduce trade gap

Foreign secretary Touhid Hossain has said that a decision on providing India with transit facility is quite unlikely in the July 17-18 official talks in New Delhi.
Dhaka will rather press for removing non-tariff and para-tariff barriers so that Bangladesh can send more goods to India to reduce the bilateral trade gap, he told reporters Tuesday.
Indian high commissioner in Dhaka Pinak Ranjan Chakarbarty on July 10 reaffirmed India's long-drawn interest in transit through Bangladesh's territory to ferry goods and people among its western and north-eastern states, and said that the issue would be raised at the foreign secretary-level meeting in New Delhi.
'Nothing [is there] to be worried about, no decision will be taken at this point of time,' Touhid said.
He referred to the foreign adviser's earlier statement made to dispel speculations over the transit issue, and restated that nothing would be done against Bangladesh's interest.
'Usually such a decision is not taken at this level. It will take time. It needs scrutiny,' the secretary said.
Touhid, who is scheduled to leave for the Indian capital today, said trade gap with India, which ballooned to $1.9 billion last year, remained a major concern for Bangladesh, and Dhaka would want India to take unilateral measures that included removal of non-tariff barriers, duty-free access and mutual recognition of standards to facilitate more exports of Bangladeshi products to India.
The foreign secretary said, 'The trade gap can be reduced by way of reducing negative list of products and removal of non-tariff barriers on India's part.'
He said Bangladesh would flag the issues of implementing the Land Boundary Agreement, border demarcation of the remaining 6.5 kms, early convening of meeting of the Joint Boundary Working Group, unfettered access through Tin-bigha corridor, exchange of enclaves and adversely possessed territories, the killing of unarmed civilians by the Indian BSF and early convening of the 37th session of the Joint Rivers Commission.
'India is our friendly neighbour, and I believe any problem can be resolved through discussion. We will try to find a common ground on all the bilateral issues,' the secretary added.
Home secretary-level talks between the two countries may be held next month when the boundary issue would be discussed, he informed.
Dhaka would also propose resumption of talks on maritime boundary delimitation that remained stalled for more than two decades.
Dwelling on the issue of the Dhaka-Kolkata train service, he said that both sides agreed to make this service more effective reducing the time waste for immigration clearance on the Indian side.
On more bus services between the two countries, Touhid said a proposal on Dhaka-Shilong-Gowahati bus service could be discussed.
He said Dhaka would ask Delhi to allow Nepalese transports to enter Bangladesh territory through Banglabandh border to ease direct trade between Bangladesh and Nepal.

[ALOCHONA] Maldives cosying up to China a warning for India

Maldives cosying up to China a warning for India

New Delhi: Is India losing out to Chinese interests in it's neighbourhood? After Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh, where the governments share better relations with Beijing than New Delhi, next in line could be strategically located Maldives.

Maldives is the world's most popular honeymoon destination and a picture-perfect archipelago on the Indian Ocean, where the rich and famous from all corners of the world come on holiday.

And at the same time Maldives is home to Asia's longest running dictator. For the past 30 years President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has ruled the tiny nation with an iron-hand.

Widespread allegations of human rights violations forced people like Maldivian Democratic Party's presidential candidate Mohammed Nasheed on the streets three years back.

Now, with ever increasing public support, Nasheed is on his first visit to India to garner support from the Indian government to help ensure a free and fair election in his country three months later.

And there is a grave warning too. President Gayoom is actively courting China for the past one year, creating a security for threat for India in the Indian Ocean.

"Gayoom is trying to shift his friendship ties from India towards China with the belief that it would be difficult for him to maintain a strong friendly relationship, personal relationship with India while there is call for democracy at home," Nasheed says.

There is now talk about the Chinese setting up a military bases in one of the Maldivian islands.

Nasheed insists that his party would not let that happen if they come to power.

Last week, Nasheed along with a five-member delegation of his Maldivian Democratic Party met Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and briefed him about the situation.

"It's a country of immense strategic importance to us. I hope not (that we are losing the strategic importance to China)," Kuldeep Sahdev, former Indian diplomat, says.

It's this new equation that President Gayoom fears the most. He has always counted on Indian backing to rule for all these years.

India even sent commandos to fight back a coup against him in 1988 but now China is not only giving aid but also helping President Gayoom build his government offices.

[ALOCHONA] If transit is given, BD will be used for terrorist activists

If transit is given, BD will be used for terrorist activists: political experts say
BD to say no to Indian proposal for transit at Delhi Meet

Amena Khatun Urmee

Bangladesh will express its unwillingness to provide India with transit facilities during the bilateral meeting of Bangladesh-India to be held between foreign secretaries of the two countries in Delhi tomorrow (Thursday).
A highly-placed diplomatic source in the Foreign Ministry said, "We are ready to hold talk on various issues with any foreign country but we are categorically saying that Bangladesh will not agree with India's proposal if it goes against country's sovereignty and interest."
Referring to rules of foreign policy that no decision can be imposed on coercion, earlier Foreign Adviser said that Bangladesh can discuss any issue with India as a neighbouring country but no decision can be imposed on it. Bangladeshi counterparts will discuss about trade and other bilateral issues other than transit in the meeting with India.
Another source alleged that India is being benefited in many ways from Bangladesh including sharing of water and one-sided trade but despite all these facilities enjoyed by India it has started to put continuous pressure on the country for transit facilities. It added that India has been insisting on the country for transit for many years but Bangladesh is not responding to her demand.
According to political scientists, as the Caretaker Government is not an elected and democratic government, it has no right to take a serious decision like granting transit to any foreign country.
They said "Bangladesh is a democratic country and its people are the original owners and stakeholders of everything thereof and thus all important decisions have to be taken in consultation with common mass, civil society leaders and members of the defence services".
Foreign Ministry sources said that there is a committee which is working as to how communication between the two countries can be increased but this committee is identifying all possible ways except giving transit.
It may be pointed out that in July 2007 when Indian state minister for commerce Joyram Ramesh came to Dhaka he said India would like to promote Bangladesh by helping in the fields of trade and commerce and thus transit is necessary.
Diplomatic experts expressed their anxieties about transit issue saying that strategically India is strong because of its military and commercial might and it has many provinces where the insurgents are fighting for their independence through armed movements. If transit is given, Bangladesh may be used for military activities both by the Indian government and the insurgents.

[ALOCHONA] UN Hails Bangladesh's anti-graft drive ...

Shamim Huq <ShamimMHuq@Yahoo.com> wrote:

UN hails Bangladesh's anti-graft drive
(Reuters)

15 July 2008

DHAKA - The United Nations Development Programme has lauded a drive launched in Bangladesh by the army-backed interim government early last year against widespread corruption.
The UNDP said in a report on Tuesday the drive, which has made significant progress in the past 18 months, should continue to further reduce corruption.
"The (ant-corruption) efforts have sent a powerful message to the Bangladesh public that corruption can no longer be tolerated ...," said UNDP Resident Representative Renata Dessallien.
The interim authority detained more than 170 key political and business figures, including former prime ministers Sheikh Hasina and Begum Khaleda Zia for alleged corruption, after it took charge in January 2007.
The interim authority came to power after months of political violence and a series of crippling strikes called by bickering political parties.
To prepare the report, UNDP interviewed Anti-Corruption Commission officials and other experts, went through case studies, made field visits and conducted statistical surveys.
"The ACCs achievements to date have been monumental. Very few commissions in other countries have made as much progress in such a short time frame," said Michael Th. Johnson, an international anti-crime expert for the United Nations.

[mukto-mona] Bangladesh should allow transit to India

Bangladesh should allow transit to India Our geographical location makes
India dependent on Bangladesh for only one transit-route. That is
Kotkata -Dhaka - Chittagong - Yangon transit-route. We also feel that
India should reciprocate this goodwill on our part by allowing a
transit-route between Kathmundu - Dhaka and by allowing a transit-route
between Thimpu - Dhaka. We have said it all in the headline and
sub-headline of the article. The only left is to answer this question
-"If that is true, then what is all the fuss in a portion of the
Bangladeshi press?" Well, to find out about that you will have to ask
those stupids. Its perplexing though, how come so many journalists and
so many editors can simultaneously act such stupid? Well, if they are
not stupids, they should work on their vocabulary. They need to get
their definitions right. There might be a supplimentary question from
those newspapers who have been publishing with serious errors - "Well,
we understand, what you are saying. Lets say we don't call that
transit-route anymore. We stand corrected. Lets say, we call those
alleged demands from India as something else - corridors. What do you
say about that?" Our answer would be - first start using the correct
vocabulary. Lets first see how the transit-routes work out. Let India
prove whether they really are "Incredible India" or whether they are
"Irresponsible India" as far as its immediate eastern neighbors
(Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar) are concerned. Once a good
reciprocity is achieved on these proposed transit-routes, that will
improve the body language of the relations among different nations in
this region. Let the first step to happen. That would take a generation.
Let the next generation think about what can happen in their time. Ok,
ok, eta na hoi bujlam. But what do you say about this question - "We
might have our problem with the India's attitude or behaviour. But
doesn't that hurt the general people of their north-eastern states (the
so-called seven sisters). Because, even Indian government doesn't take
care of the people in those states, it's often alleged. A direct proof
in support of that allegation is that India has an Emergency Power Act
imposed on those seven states for several decades. Don't we have a
responsibility for those people?" Our first response would be - 'Ma er
cheye, mashir dorod dekhano ta ki valo?" On a serious note, we think we
are addressing that, too. At least a portion of that concern. See the
news time attached below, from the Bangla version of bdnews24.com
<http://bdnews24.com/> . Moreover, we have previously proposed to
empower the cheif executives of the district councils of our bordering
districts to take combined local projects in partnership with their
Indian and Burmese counterparts so that more uniform and
people-to-people exchange infrastructure are developed in our regions.
We hope that would happen in coming years. On the same note, we have
also previously proposed that Bangladesh should setup special economic
zones for re-export processing in the bordering districts that can
effectively proxy the corridor as far as economics is concerned. In
the meantime, let us start with the transit-route projects. Bangladesh
should allow transit to India, only if reciprocated. Our geographical
location makes India dependent on Bangladesh for only one transit-route.
That is Kotkata -Dhaka - Chittagong - Yangon transit-route. We also feel
that India should reciprocate this goodwill on our part with allowing
transit between Kathmundu - Dhaka and Thimpu - Dhaka transit-route.
If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please
forward it to others. If you have an ear to the columnists in regular
traditional media, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the
journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with
them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.

Thanks for your time,
Innovation Line

I fully agree with your suggestions and want to add that pro- bangladeshi people should unitdly give ultimatum to CTG that within 30 july  they must release Khaleda, Nizami and send tareq  and koko abroad  for treatment. otherwise they will start breaking the spinal cord of puppets of india and its supporters  susils.  Some people justneed to start beatingt  the puppets of india and then people will spontaneously  give their hand as they give when a snatcher is caught.

Situation is such now in Bangladesh . Just need to start beating the susils, the puppets of india installed CTG.

Transit and Bangladeshis to Get Ready for Movement Against the CTG
Abid Bahar

Foreign Minister Iftekher Chowdhury once said, "the CTG will leave the transit issue in such a position that the elected government will have no choice but to accept it." It sounds like the CTG is a puppet government of India. We already know General Moin U is a pro-Indian General. The CTG is only buying time to find excuses for a prolonged rule.
India as an untrusworthy partner did similar treaties soon after Bangladesh became independent. Mujib was not an inexperienced leader. India took advantage of the vonerability. Now again they knowingly trying the transit pact with an unelected government. Bangladeshis are not against giving transit to India but wants a comprehensive deal and such a deal should be initiated, examined and signed by an elected government. Bangladeshis should resist against the Chaniaka RAW deal.
The other developments that the CTG is siding with the AL and forcing Khalida to leave the country. It paralized Khalida's two children. Is this extrajudicial act for corruption or to get rid of the political enemy? Hasina is quiet on the transit issue. What is going on? It appears that the external forces that installed CTG through anarchy are here to remove the pro-Bangladesh forces and to install a prolonged Moin U army rule. After all Moin U's CTG rule already brought inceasing difficulties for Bangladesh. It is time to remove it.

Hasina was already in favour of transit but didn't dare to go forward. It seems that patriotic fronts irrespective of party affiliation have to act in this historic movement. After 17th July let the nation watch and be ready to break the illegal emergency rule of the CTG and bring down the illegal foreign backed govenment. It has to be like the historic Farakka Movement by Bhasani; a Bangladesh nation-wide moment. India and its allies will readily call this a Taliban movement. But whatever, Bangladeshis have to fight against any pact signed by the illegal CTG government.
We are Bangladeshis! Save Bangladesh!
         Bangladeshis Unite!

Journalists were attacked/killed during AL and BNP governments. The
attackers were invariably politcally connected and politically
protected.

Many journalists, and newspapers, are too partisan. Many journalists
can be bought and sold.

All this fancy talk about liberty and freedom - its just rubbish. As
if there is no anti CTG talk in the media!

When you steal from thieves the thieves suddenly start talking about
property rights!

There are no foreign units of the CTG - that is absurd. However for
decades there have been foreign units of AL and BNP. And these units
have almost never done anything for the foreign communities. Instead
they have used new found wealth and new found education to bolster
rubbish politics. They are defined by infighting, petty jealousies,
clashing egos, wasted funds, wasted chances, cycles of violence and
social unrest. They should all be closed down. But the upper jerks
in AL and BNP in Desh just to love to fly around, get flowers from
fawning fools, pocket some cash and steal soap from any hotel they
stay in.

Tell it like it is baby.

Wanna suckle?

[ALOCHONA] Ferdaus Ahmed Quarishi sued for trespass, death threats

People of power make every effort to claim the world as his or her,

Ferdaus Ahmed Quarishi a man backed by Army/DGFI/CTG is just a new edition

to that chronicle. We have seen the similar one with CTG ex Advisor Geete Ara Safia.

Justice must be served to make sure these so called corrupt bankrupt politicians

like Ferdaus Ahmed Quarishi do not go unchallenged and law takes it own course

to stop Ferdaus Ahmed Quarishi from grabbing property from a powerless helpless

women.

Quarishi sued for trespass, death threats Tue, Jul 15th, 2008 10:59 pm BdST Dhaka, July 15 (bdnews24.com)—A case has been filed against Progressive Democratic Party chief Ferdaus Ahmed Quarishi on charges of attempting to grab a house and making death threats. Asma Lupina Mallick, wife of the late journalist Golam Rasul Mallick Tuesday, filed the case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court accusing Quarishi of trespassing into her Topkhana Road house in an attempt to capture it. Contacted, Quarishi termed the allegation of trespassing baseless and told bdnews24.com that he would file a libel suit. Metropolitan magistrate Maqsuda Parveen ordered the officer-in-charge of Shahbag Police Station to investigate the case and submit a report to the court on Sept 25, the next date of hearing. The plaintiff in her statement said that as heirs of her husband, she and her children were in possession of the six-storey building on Topkhana Road. Asma mentioned that Quarishi had been her tenant. Asma alleged that up to 40 unidentified armed men led by Quarishi illegally entered the fourth floor of the building and ransacked and threw out furniture on July 9. It was also alleged that the "criminals" led by Quarishi looted goods, including computers, worth about Tk 5 lakh. The plaintiff alleged that Quarishi had not been paying house rents for long. Asma alleged that Quarishi forced tenants Nusrat Mahmud Sabuj, news editor, Jainal Abedin, a reporter, of Bangla-language daily Karotoa out of the house and directed his associates to lock the house. Asma told bdnews24.com, "I'm feeling insecure. The accused person has, at different times, issued us death threats." She said that when she first went to file a case with Shahbagh police, they did not record it. Later on July 10, the plaintiff filed a general diary with the police station. Asked about the case, Quarishi told bdnews24.com: "The question of trespass doesn't arise at all as we are in the house. Maybe somebody is using them to blemish my honour." "I will file a Tk 20 crore libel suit." Quarishi also claimed he had once made an advance payment to buy the house. "When Golam Rasul Mallick was alive, I signed an agreement with him to buy the house. Accordingly, I also gave him some money. But later I came to know that the house had become bank property for non-payment of overdue bank loans." "Due to the complexity, I did not get the house registered." Quarishi claimed to be the legal owner of the house. bdnews24.com/pb/rb/eh/rm/2244 hours WARNING: Any unauthorised use or reproduction of bdnews24.com content for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited and constitutes copyright infringement liable to legal action :: Story :: ** Quarishi sued for trespass, death threats ** A case has been filed against Progressive Democratic Party chief Ferdaus Ahmed Quarishi on charges of attempting to grab a house and making death threats. [mukto-mona] Deband leaders support Indo-US Nuclear Deal

Those who were critical of Yogi Sikand and failed to appreciate the Indian nationalistic spirit of the Deoband leaders should read the following article with the hope that it may change their hearts. These leaders not only support the deal, but also they have renounced the Muslim appeasement politics of some of the Indian political parties. After reading the article, it should be clear that they are no less nationalist than the Congress. Today's Anandabazaara has a similar news item.

I hope no one will guess about my personal view on the proposed deal.

[mukto-mona] Transit facilities to India

If it is profitable and in the interest of the people of Bangladesh why we cannot consider providing transit facilities to our neighbour India ?

There should  be certain condition for this transit agreement and both parties should have right to cancel this agreement at any time for their greater national interest.

First of all feasibility study should be performed by the government of Bangladesh and than submit the study report to the next elected parliament for discussion and acceptance. If  accepted  and the draft agreement passes in the Parliament , Bangladesh should consider the mutually benifitted Transit Agreement.

[ALOCHONA] what if there is no transit?

if bd denies transit to india what may happen? i figured it out this way,

SCENARIO 1:

1. mainland indian products and indian army cannot reach the seven sisters easily

2. so, 7 sis will suffer for consumer products, quality of living and unrest will increase

3. this situation will open up 7 sis market for bd products

4. sensing it, india will close trade between bd and 7 sis

5. eventually 7 sis will find themselves into misery and intensify movement against the central

6. in future, if any of the 7 sis is free, bd will have its market back

SCENARIO 2:

1. indian army will find it difficult to reach myanmar and protect indian investment there, when china has easier access to myanmar

2. increased unrest in the 7 sis may interest china to piss-off india

SCENARIO 3:

1. gas pipe line from myanmar to india through this corridor will not be possible

2. this will slow down india's growth and the gas sector investment in myanmar will not yield anything to them

SCENARIO 4:

1. india cannot force bd to accept the same route for asian highway

is any of the above wrong? is there anything to loose for bd?

india's latest cheap trick is sending the rice right after the demand on transit, are we still same as years ago to get carried away by this trick?

RE: [ALOCHONA] A disgraceful comment to the nation by Moeen U Ahmed

His (Desher Daroan Moeen) remark about selling votes is an insult to the nation? How many of his own soldiers sell votes? Army always think civilans are bustard.

He was a regular visitor to Hawa Bhaban. He was nominated to that position by Tareq and Iskander.

Dear Mahatir,

It is indeed amazing that you have chosen to criticize the general who has the guts to talk openly about our societal ills. Who can honestly say that this is not an open secret in Bangladesh. Some voters - not all, know very well that the candidates will forget them as soon as they are elected. They believe in the maxim "a bird in hand is worth two in the bush". It is for this precise reason that they chose to get money or favor while their vote till matters.

It is a sad fact of "democracy" in Bangladesh. No sense in denying an open secret.

Today M.U AHmed saheb has given a sermon that people should not sale their vote.
When someone make such generalized comment , it means that majority people sale thier vote.

 is it true?

How many people  sale their vote? If it was possible to buy vote , then why salman frahman  was defeated  to nazmulk huda?   Was Huda able to spend more money than  F. Rahman?

is  Hasina    not able to  manage enough money to pass in all five seats she contest?

Why hasina can not pass in all five seats?  Is it that she can not manage enough money?

Only stupid people who get sens e by the letter from UN can give such sermon

THREE YEARS, NO JUSTICE – MENEZES COMMEMORATIVE EVENTS 22nd JULY 2008

Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead on 22nd July 2005 at Stockwell tube station during a pre-planned police anti-terror operation. Not a single police officer has faced any disciplinary action for the killing. This is despite a jury at the Old Bailey finding the Office of the Commissioner of the Metropolitan police guilty of 'catastrophic errors' at the health and safety trial in October last year.

3 years on, his family continue to tirelessly campaigning to find out all the circumstances into how Jean died and for justice and accountability.

Please join the family to mark the 3rd anniversary of his death on the 22nd July 2008 by attending one of the following events:

* At 9.45am a vigil outside Stockwell tube station to mark the exact moment Jean Charles was killed.

* At 1.30pm to unveil a sculpture of the Brazilian flag made from flowers at Old Palace Yard, W1, next to Parliament Square. The sculpture will bear with the words 'Menezes - 3 years No Justice' written across it. The centre of the sculpture will be made up of 1093 flowers - one flower for every day which has passed since Jean died. Special guests will be announced later this week that will be joining the family to place the final few flowers into the centre of the sculpture on the day.

Old Palace Yard can be found here:

[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh economy grows 6 pct despite disasters - IMF

Bangladesh economy grows 6 pct despite disasters - IMF

- DHAKA (Thomson Financial) - Bangladesh's economy grew by more than 6 percent in the past fiscal year, despite two natural disasters, because of strong exports and remittances, the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday.

The impoverished South Asian nation was rocked by widespread flooding last July and a devastating cyclone in November.

Despite this, Bangladesh's 'macroeconomic performance was remarkably resilient in a year of multiple natural disasters and elevated international food and fuel prices,' Thomas Rumbaugh, an adviser for the IMF, said.

Together the two disasters killed 5,000 people, left millions homeless and caused $2.7 billion of damage to crops and property.

'A strong pick-up in domestic economic activity in the second half of the year and rapid growth in garments exports and remittances enabled growth in the FY08 to exceed 6 percent,' Rumbaugh said.

The growth estimate for the year ended June 30, 2008 was about 1 percent more than the Washington-based IMF's earlier forecast.

That previous prediction came after last year's floods -- which submerged 41 percent of the country -- and the cyclone dealt a major blow to economic activity.

Exports, led by the garment industry, rebounded to clock more than 15 percent growth in the second half of the year, despite hovering in negative territory in the first quarter.

Remittances grew a record 33 percent to $7.94 billion.

The IMF forecast was in line with the military-backed government's projection of 6.2 percent growth for this financial year.

But the IMF warned that high food and fuel prices remain Bangladesh's 'biggest challenge' as inflation -- which was about 10 percent last year -- could really hurt the country's poor.

'The main priority is to keep control of inflationary pressures stemming from global prices and domestic demand,' Rumbaugh said, suggesting the central bank 'curb credit growth' by tightening money supply.
