[ALOCHONA] Re: Consequence of Nizami's release

US-Saudi-Pak is an exclusive club. How can anybody else make real
friendship with them when it was your lord Jamaat and Nizami who worked
hand in hand with Pakistan with full US-Saudi support in 1971 in killing
and raping us abusing the name of our religion? It was your morally
and spiritually bankrupt lord Jamaat's jihad against our women and
innocent civilians. (And you religiously want us to forget those as
quickly as possible). First, you have to certify those evil acts of
1971 as great religious duties, then you will be able to make real and
everlasting friendship with them. You have to declare like Tarek Zia,
"BNP and Jamaat belong to the same family and we are now inseparable."
What more do you want us to show about a murderer and rapist unless he
is really shameless? What do you mean by constructive? When did lying,
covering up, defending evil, hypocrisy and deception become part of
someting constructive?

forces? Then who else except you and your lord BAL left out of the
pocket of your anti-liberation forces??? You guys are really good at
biting at the bait when the fish jumps out of your catch!!!!! That is
the genuine characteristics of politically and ideologically bankrupt
fishermen. What else you still have to show us in your jihad against
Jamaat??? Come on man, be constructive and if those anti-liberation
forces are destructive as opposed to your constructive actions, they
will be automatically vanished and you will gain the people's love to
get them down and yourself up.......

Even though the foot soldiers of Jamaat/Shibir always spread US-Israeli

$140 a barrel.

[ALOCHONA] Transit to India

SECRETARY level talks on various Indo-Bangladesh issues have just concluded in New Delhi recently. Both sides put forward their agenda of interests. The Bangladesh foreign secretary was hopeful of positive results relating to economy and border. He said that Bangladesh would not give any concession regarding transit but would be willing to discuss strengthening security to tackle the terrorists on both sides of the border.. He also took up issues of reducing trade gap (removal of non-tariff barriers, duty-free access, exporting more products from Bangladesh) border demarcation in remaining 6.5kms, unfettered access through Tin Bigha corridor, exchange of enclaves, and unsettled territories.

There are many other issues for Bangladesh to discuss with India such as Talpatti, land transit with Nepal, stoppage of push-in, indiscriminate killings of Bangladeshi by Indian BSF, etc. But by keeping the agenda small, Bangladesh has done well. Meetings with limited agenda are more effective. The issue of transit to India is highly sensitive as we may have to go even to referendum and parliamentary discussion to determine the acceptability by the people. Moreover, the CTG is not competent to take any final decision on such an issue.

It is true that Bangladesh could make adequate progress in transit issue after signing of the Indo-Bangladesh Trade Agreement on March 28, 1972 which provided for "mutually beneficial arrangements, for the use of their waterways, railways and roadways for commerce between the two countries and for passage of goods between two places in one country, through the territory of the other."

The then Indian trade minister's observation in this regard is significant. His observation was: "Excellency, we would be too happy to provide the necessary transit facilities to Nepal and our friends in Bangladesh." With the passage of time the question of transit facilities to Nepal appears to have been forgotten by India. Bangladesh does not appreciate this kind of attitude of India.

There has been enough discussion about the talks, and, broadly speaking, there were a few observations from the leading economists, eminent politicians, and prominent citizens. They were: (a) CTG is not competent to handle a highly sensitive issue like transit to India, (b) the issue is also political,(c) we cannot extend concession to India sacrificing our own interest, and (d) our experience of agreements with India in past is not happy.

Secretary level discussion is expert level meeting. As such there is no scope for dictation by any emotion or sentiment. It has to be confined strictly to economic cost and benefit. However, Bangladesh should be straight in expressing its attitude that solution of the issue of transit depends on solution of some other critical issues. However, serious discussion on the issue of transit is not appropriate at this stage.

Though agreement of October 4, 1980 had similar proviso for surface connectivity as included in 1972 agreement, successive governments of Bangladesh could provide the facility due to: (a) very sensitive nature of the matter, (b) taking a decision on an issue that might be seen as providing special dispensation to India, (c) depriving Bangladesh of the benefit of access to enclaves like Dahagram and Angorpota on permanent basis, (d) non-fulfillment of promised sale of half a million tons of rice to Bangladesh, and (e) permanent settlement of sharing Ganges water.

We do understand that transit facility to India is of great importance for India because it enables India to control and develop its states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Monipur, and Arunachal.

However, easy access to these states through Bangladesh means too much pressure on our weak infrastructure (particularly on roads and culverts), the possibility of entry of narcotics, possible complications vis-à-vis anti-insurgent activities across the border, etc. The railroads may have to be brought up to international standard, the rivers to be used by Indians should be dredged to increase their navigability. The government of India should bear the entire cost of improving river transport, roads, and railways.

India may assist in promoting trade between Bangladesh-Nepal and Bangladesh-Bhutan through allowing small corridors. In extending transit facility to India, we must be careful about the interest of our traders and industrialists.

Right from the independence of Bangladesh its people were eager to extend concessions to Indians. But for certain acts of India they have become suspicious. The worst act was the Farakka barrage. Bangabandhu's trust in India was not honored properly. We are suffering from less supply of Ganges water than committed. BSF are killing Bangladeshis without adequate reasons. Maritime boundaries need to be finalised, issues like Talpatti, demarcation of 6.5kms borders, stoppage of push-in, and Bangladesh-Nepal and Bangladesh-Bhutan corridors can be solved without much difficulty. But so long as the Bangladeshis are skeptical of Indian motives, no Bangladesh government will dare to solve the transit issue. Thus it is up to India whether it settles the issue the quickly or allows it to continue to drag on for an indefinite period.

In improving the image of India in Bangladesh it appears to be relevant to point out the role of media in India. It has been observed that the Indian media is not very friendly toward Bangladesh. Before concluding this analysis, it would be appropriate to say that the governments of Bangladesh did not pay due attention in drafting earlier international agreements. This caused loss to the nation. In future the government may seek the assistance of eminent lawyers of the country in this matter.

[ALOCHONA] EC accuses a TV channel of violating electoral code of conduct

EC accuses a TV channel of violating electoral code of conduct

The Election Commission on Monday accused a private TV channel of violating the code of conduct for local government elections by introducing the mayoral candidates in August 4 polls with their political identities in a dialogue show.
The commission in a letter asked the ATN Bangla to refrain from further violation of the code of conduct.

The letter said that all the local government polls, including the elections to the city corporation, were completely non-partisan and no candidates were allowed to use their political affiliation, the name or electoral symbol of the political party they belonged to and portrait of any political leader in electioneering.

The EC, however, did not issue similar letters to the political parties and alliances which formally fielded candidates in the city corporation polls.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Is Bangladesh a failed state?

I was the first one to draw attention to the fact that Bangladesh ranks very high in the list of countries qualifying for the status of "failed state" back in January, 2008.
Read my comments that were made in the context of replying to the outrage expressed by some of the Jamaati-pasand people to my  poem, "A Razakar Haunted"  published in the Daily Star, Jan. 19, 2008.

Farida Majid  wrote:

What exactly was NEGATIVE in the text of my poem? My poem may be "stupid" in your opinion, but please explain, even in your own ability to write English, why should it be taken as a FACT? Your opinion of my NEGATIVE ATTITUDE cannot be explained as a provable FACT. Your insistence on making Farida Majid feel ashamed is, similarly, driven by your irrational emotion.

The FACT is Bangladesh is a 'failed state' because of the Islamists like you have kept it in a constant state of flux with your tortures of innocent civilians, minority persecutions and religious divisions. If you care, please look up the Failed States Index 2007 published in the Foreign Policy magazine in the January 2008 issue. Check the 'Indicators of instability' and find out that Bangladesh is not as bad as many other failed states in other sectors but rank very high in the category of the problem of 'severe ethnic and religious divisions' that plague failed states.

Let us get REAL. Let us deal with FACTS. Show some POSITIVE effort on your part to face the reality instead of raving and ranting against people who care about and serve the humanity with humility and not hubris.

Hello everyone,
I try to avoid these kind of NEGATIVE discussion and dispute.. but I feel like I have given no other choice but to write a few words... English is basically my fourth language.. if Bangla could be considered as first there are two other other languages before I started learning English so I my not be able to express myself as comfortably as like someone who can write a poem in English or can teach in USA.. I am not sure how long she has been in USA, and how much she really knew about Bangladeshi dirty politics, however,  I feel obliged to ask a  few question to Farida Majid..

What would you like to achieve by this kind of NEGATIVE excuse my language if it is not considered as stupid poems.
We all understand, all Islamic parities were against Independence, and we all know they were wrong but, so did USA, shame on you Ms. Farida Majida, you don't feel ashamed to be a teacher in the heart and stomach or USA who also were against our independence and writing dirty poems agianst another friend of USA..

What did you guys achieve Ms. Farida Majid in last 35 years through all NEGATIVITY, and look at Jama'at what did they achieve.. Shame on you all, dont you feel ashamed of your continous NEGATIVE ATTITUDE.. shame.. is it that you are teaching to you student.. just how to be against someone..

Ms. Farida Majid and to whom it may concern, PLEASE, try to learn lesson from the reality.. Honestly speaking, sometime, I really do not understand, if you really have two eyes to see the facts, the reality... Shame...

Re: [ALOCHONA] Is Bangladesh a failed state?

I know that reading reports about whether Bangladesh is a failed state will make many of us defensive. But it should be taken as an opportunity to examine our progress (or lack thereof).

While we have made significant improvement in many areas, we are far behind other similar  nations. It is like the guy who is a high school graduate in a family of doctorate candidates - of course there has been progress, but it is not meaningful progress.

We are still addressing basic issues like building roads, bridges, generating power, ensuring proper drinking water, etc. And now with global inflation in food and fuel, our problems are even more fundamental - how do we feed all our people?

The world is running so fast, that for an underdeveloped country like ours it is not enough to just move, we have to run and sprint just to catch up. And global warming has put a time limit on Bangladesh - either we sprint or we disappear.

Dear Isha

US Congress is not an authentic authority. And this is well known to everybody in the world that they do not care any thing. All they care is there own aim & objectives. Such false reports are daily routine for the americans. Bangladesh, since its indepence, had done a magnificant progress in the field of economy. It is an emerging market and standard of living of the peapole is improving day after day. No such country could be declared as a failed state. I will suggest you to make your own set of definations, instead of adopting these definations from the west.

Thanks.

Is Bangladesh a failed state?

Prothom Alo published a report on 20 July 2008 as it's main news by the head line ` Is Bangladesh in the list of failed state? `

US Congress recently published a report which shows Bangladesh at the rank of 12 out of 144 countries. The report cite the reference of the finding of Fund for Peace and Foreign Policy magazine.

The reference of the report in the daily draws sharp reactions from the experts.

Bangladesh ranked 12 with 100.3 points out of 144 states, Somalia holds the last position on the basis of following 12 indicators:

Social Indicators:

I-1. Mounting Demographic Pressures
I-2. Massive Movement of Refugees or Internally Displaced Persons creating
Complex Humanitarian Emergencies
I-3. Legacy of Vengeance-Seeking Group Grievance or Group Paranoia
I-4. Chronic and Sustained Human Flight

Economic Indicators
I-5. Uneven Economic Development along Group Lines
I-6. Sharp and/or Severe Economic Decline

Political Indicators
I-7. Criminalization and/or Delegitimization of the State
I-8. Progressive Deterioration of Public Services
I-9. Suspension or Arbitrary Application of the Rule of Law and Widespread
Violation of Human Rights
I-10. Security Apparatus Operates as a "State Within a State"
I-11. Rise of Factionalized Elites
I-12. Intervention of Other States or External Political Actors

The ordinary citizen compiled the following scores of Bangladesh in different attributes:

Index no Attributes Bangladesh score Rank in the item
1.1 Mounting Demographic Pressures 9.8 2
1.2 . Massive Movement of Refugees or Internally Displaced Persons creating Complex Humanitarian Emergencies 7.1 38
1.3 Legacy of Vengeance-Seeking Group Grievance or Group Paranoia 9.7 4
1.4 Chronic and Sustained Human Flight 8.4 5
1.5 Uneven Economic Development along Group Lines 9.0 9
1.6 Sharp and/or Severe Economic Decline 7.1 54
1.7 Criminalization and/or Delegitimization of the State 9.1 17
1.8 Progressive Deterioration of Public Services 7.8 39
1.9 Suspension or Arbitrary Application of the Rule of Law and Widespread Violation of Human Rights 8.0 31
1.10 . Security Apparatus Operates as a "State Within a State" 8.3 23
1.11 Rise of Factionalized Elites 9.6 06
1.12 . Intervention of Other States or External Political Actors 6.4 71

The table shows interesting finding- Bangladesh scores worst in 1.1 in `Mounting demographic pressure' likely due to climate changes where Bangladesh is rather a victim of the global warming induced by excess carbon emission. The other areas where Bangladesh scores low are 1.3 Legacy of Vengeance-Seeking Group Grievance probably the researchers is not liking the collective bargaining of the LDCs, BIMSTEC,D8 etc;1.4 Chronic and Sustained Human Flight; 1.11 Rise of Factionalized Elites which the report defined as Fragmentation of ruling elites and state institutions along group lines and Use of nationalistic political rhetoric by ruling elites, often in terms of communal irredentism or of communal solidarity; and 1.5 Uneven Economic Development along Group Lines.

The report does not assess from a neutral point. It is fragmented view from above.

The report fails to recognize the courage and resilience of Bangladeshi people in overcoming 2 massive floods and a devastating cyclone, the effect of microfinance on the low income group and the positive transformation that is taking place in our state craft.

In no way Bangladesh is a failed state or will be one? Bangladesh will prove the skeptics wrong.

[mukto-mona] Satya pir

This is an interesting article from banglapedia on the bengali
tradition of satya Pir.

Satya Pir one of the popular beliefs and practices that crept into
the fold of popular aspect of islam by long association of the
Muslims with other religionists and probably also due to the
increasing number of converts. The Hindu writers changed the word Pir
for Narayana, though there was hardly any difference between the
Satya-Pir of the Muslims and the Satya-Narayana of the Hindus. The
worship of Satya-Pir could be found even in the early twentieth
century particularly in north and western part of Bengal. A wooden
plank was made the seat of the Satya-Pir and offerings of edibles
like confectioneries, milk, sugar, Betel leaf, betel nuts etc were
made.

the literature, two traditions find prominence. According to the
first, the Hindu god Shri Hari appears in the guise of a faqir before
a poor Brahmin and orders him to make offerings to Satya-Narayana;
the Brahmin obeys the order and becomes rich. According to a second
tradition, a merchant is blessed with a female child with the
blessings of the Satya-Narayana. The female child when grown up was
married, and the merchant takes his son-in-law with him in a certain
trading voyage. There the merchant got into trouble because he did
not worship Satya-Pir. But the merchant's wife was a devotee of Satya-
Pir, so he got out of trouble. When the merchant was returning with
his son-in-law they again were about to be drowned, because the
merchant's daughter being eager to see her husband, neglected the
offerings of the Satya-Pir. She later realised the importance of
worshipping Satya-Pir and thus they all got out of trouble. In this
way, the Satya-Pir (or Satya-Narayana) literature gained popularity
among the people; the main purpose of the literature was to glorify
the Satya-Pir. The first book on Satya-Pir called Satya-Pir Kavya is
attributed to Shaikh Faizullah and the book is supposed to have been
written in between 1545 to 1575 AD. Some scholars think that Sultan
Alauddin husain Shah (1494 to 1519 AD) was the originator of the
Satya-Pir movement, but there is no evidence to support this view.

A close examination of the literature, mode of worship and traditions
show that worship of the Satya-Pir (or Satya- Narayana) was almost
similar to the worship of local deities manasa or chandi; the Satya-
Pir was represented not by any deity but by a simple wooden plank.
The Satya-Pir worshippers generally came from the poor class people
and their offerings were also simple. There were both Muslim and
Hindu elements in the concepts of Satya-Pir and it can be said with
some amount of certainty that the Satya-Pir (Satya-Narayana) concept
originated through a fusion of Muslim idea of the pir and the Hindu
notion of the local deities. It is a local variation of the Muslim
concept of pirism, when the local people were converted to Islam,
they got the conception of pirism mixed up with the old idea of the
supernatural power of their deities. A further evolution of this
process saw its culmination in the personification of Pir in Satya-
Pir (or Satya- Narayana) or pirism itself began to be conceived as a
supernatural power. [Abdul Karim]

Thanks.

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Is Bangladesh a failed state?

[mukto-mona] Fw: Hindu Temple of Georgia - FOX5 Investigation

Subject: Hindu Temple of Georgia - FOX5 Investigation

Hello:

You might be interested in browsing to
http://community.myfoxatlanta.com/blogs/RandyTravis to see the 'teaser' blog on Fox5 ITeam Investigation of Hindu Temple of Georgia and Dr. Commander Selvam Siddhar Swamiji.

Please mark your calendar to watch the I-Team report being broadcast on Fox5 (Channel 5) on Monday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 22 during the 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM newscast.

You've probably heard a lot about the "Prosperity Gospel," where some Christian preachers make no effort to hide their rich lifestyles, insisting it's God's wish for everyone to be prosperous.

There's actually an investigation in Congress right now looking at whether those church leaders, including two metro Atlanta ministers, are dodging IRS rules.

The I-Team discovered a different version: a local Hindu leader who sure acts rich and famous.

Beginning Monday at 6 and 10, we investigate the Hindu Temple of Georgia and its controversial leader, Dr. Commander Selvam. He calls himself a traveling monk, a guru, a swami, a siddhar. His critics call him a fraud.

We found he certainly breaks the mold of what most Americans might imagine when they think of a Hindu religious leader.

Instead of being uninterested in the trappings of worldly possessions, this swami lives in a million-dollar mansion, drives expensive cars and encourages the faithful to pay thousands of dollars to his Temple.

What do his followers get in return? His prayerful help in warding off a variety of problems, everything from marriage and immigration issues, to "bad dreams," "black magic" and "evil power."

Our story investigates allegations of credit card fraud, deceptive advertising and claims this swami has founded lots of other Hindu temples across the country. The truth is hilarious to see.

But it's what Dr. Commander told two undercover I-Team members that has some Hindus outraged about what's really going on inside the Hindu Temple of Georgia.
