Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Humayun Ahmed's comments

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49227

dear mr. alam,
how are you sir?

in the case of mr. humayun ahmed, he probably fell in love with his second wife before he got married;
and i personally don't think that it should define his personality, or mark his character as loose...
when love comes, people lives in a different state of mind.
we all know that, we all fell in love at one point or another, and will probably fall in love in future as well, who knows...

now, when it comes to mohammed, then it is a different issue,
he married ayesha and his daughter-in-law by tricking everyone,
if you read koran carefully, you will see that mohammed received verses from allah,
and that is how he justified his actions...
how beautiful it is to get instant confirmation of all your actions from allah, whenever you need them! brilliant!

first he made people believe that we human cannot disagree with allah's words;
then he took advantage of this throughout his life.

we are all victims of his trick...many people still sacrificing their lives today from this belief.

therefore, i think mohammed's actions are immoral and unethical; but mr. humayun's is not,
when it comes to the marriage issues that you referred to.

thanks
Salman S.

[mukto-mona] Re: Suicide Bombers ending their lives on a daily basis, Why ?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49221

Dear Mustafizu,

You asked,

"If there is no fear of a Day of Judgement and punishment of Hell for
the sinners, then how do you stop the criminals and sinners from
going all out in this world to do whatever they want to do?"

The answer is,

All civilized nations have rules to abide by, and to maximize one's
freedom to flourish. That is functionally much better than religious
fear and dogma. Seemslike, Allama did not have much foresight. Look
at Pakistan, Allama's birth place, or any other religious muslim
country. Those are all "left with barbarism (rule of Chenghes Khan)".
The religion is not a solution, it is the apple of discord!

Quote [It is this fear of Hell which is keeping most of the people
from committing reckless crimes.] End Quote.

This is exactly the kind of nonsensical propaganda that could be
expected from a dyed in the wool religionist. NO fear of hell or of
any scriptural stricture has kept any religious outfit from
committing horrendous crimes against humanity down history. There is
more than sufficient evidence to this fact - its denial by Mustafizur
Rahman makes him either a propagandist who hides information because
it does not suit the eventual lie that he wishes to propagate, here
the denial that religion is responsible for barbarism, or, it makes
him a deluded wiseacre who has bought into the lie about his religion
lock, stock and barrel.

[mukto-mona] Re: Humayun Ahmed's comments

Your prophet mohd married 6 year old Ayesha- daughter of his disciple /follower. Prophet also married his daughter- in- law; step son’s wife. Humayun immorality is nothing in compared to prophet’s immorality. In fact we common people can’t go/ think beyond our level, but we all are jack of all trades but master of none. Mohd was too great, established an empire and a philosophy, that is why we dare not criticize him. Humayun is not that great this why we dare criticize him.

RE: [ALOCHONA] I Do Not Know This Bangladeshi Culture

We start everything in the name of Allah. Besides that, Quran is a reminder about one's  responsibility, care, love, compassion for others. The Khutbah recited in Muslim marriages are according to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SWS).  To be effective, the recitation needs to be followed by a translation, which is not often done in Bangladesh. Even with out understanding, the words of the Quran has the power to soften the hearts of a believer.

Islam encompasses all the virtues you mention. Islam is also love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, justice, personal responsibility.  humility, humbleness, modesty,  charity,  seeking knowledge,  protecting the environment,  taking care of parents,  the sick and the poor and many others.

But it is not true that the five pillars have been invented by the Mullahs. Please open any book on the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (SWS) you will find one of the most famous Hadith attributed to Jibril (AS) whereby you will learn about the 5 pillar of Islam, 6 pillar of Iman, the definition of  Ehsan.

Please do an exercise: Go to Google and type in "The Hadith of Jibril". How many do you want to see? There are many, all narrated by aythentic scholars of Islam. If you want to look at the original Sahih Muslim or Bukhari then go to Vol 1 Hadith# 18-21 (Muslim) and Bukhari Vol #1, Hadith#7. Do you want more proofs that this is not invented by Mullas.

This is not a forum to discuss Islam but I have learned in a long and hard way as to how Islam can benefit an individual, families and our society.

May I beg to ask, why every gathering of Moslims has to start with recitation of Qoraan, when no Wedding in the days of my Holy Prophet used to start with Recitation of Qoraan?
If this is just to make us all sancticized of all our Sins, this practice is vile, conniving and cheating. You do not become a better Moslim by starting every gathering with recitation of Qoraan, when you are one of the most corrupt nations on earth, sir.

The Basics of Islam are not Mollaa created 5 Pillars of Islam that have never been mentioned as 5 Pillars of Islam by Allah in Qoraan. The Basics of Islam are ...

1. Not lying.
2. Not Cheating.
3. Not Stealing.
4. Not Robbing.
5. Not Coveting.
6. Not Killing anybody unless at a State Declared JehaaD against the Enemies of Allah, who want to kill you.
7. Not extorting Bribes.
8. Not offering Bribes.
9. Not commiting Adultry.
10. Not getting intoxicated.
11. Not mistreating Non Moslims under your rule.
12. Not insulting gods or leaders of other Religions.
13. Believing that God is one and He knows, what's in your Hearts.
14. All Moslims are same without any prejudice of color, race and Ethnic Background.

I am in partial agreement with Aziz Huq's complaints against the malaise of 'opo-sangskriti' at certain wedding ceremony gatherings in Bangladesh and in amongst the diaspora.  I have tried to sample some of the Indian soap opera fares that my female relatives and houeholders guzzle on TV.  I found them to be boring (devoid of true to life drama) and pathetically lacking in any heuristic substance or moral-elevating message like we used to get in old Bangla cinemas.

However, unlike Aziz Huq, I have no memory of attending any wedding celebration, in recent times or ever, here in Dhaka or anywhere else, where I found ' weddings starting with the recitation from the Quran with translation, proper arrangements for prayer..., etc'  Perhaps he got it mixed up with his memory of attending a 'kulkhani'.

It must be mentioned here that nowadays there is a rich pool of Bangladesh's own band-music that is fast replacing the usual imports from Bollywood in popular demands at 'gaye holud' and wedding ceremonies. This 'band-music' is often a fusion of folk songs of Bengal in modern , pop and rock rhythm arrangements, sometimes using innovative lyrics by talented artists. This is part and parcel of any culture's youthful vitality and I would be an obstinate clod to call it un-Bangladeshi.

Aziz Huq seems particularly aggrieved by a 'diregard for Islam' by Bangladeshi Muslims at such social events. Yet, the influence of Bollywood and Indian soap opera chic is most prominently displayed in the following web-site that proudly proclaims an ardent 'regard' FOR Islam!

A bit ironic, a bit of a hoot, but here it is for folks to judge for themselves:

I DO NOT KNOW THIS BANGLADESHI CULTURE

The music was blaring so loudly that I could not talk to the next person. The couples were swinging violently to the tune. I was way back of the room and the words I heard of the MC were not very clear. I could not figure out if she was speaking in Bangla, Hindi or English. Same was with case with the songs being played.

Earlier, arranging for the evening prayer was a challenge. We were given a spot by the side of the corner room where food was later served. The Adhan was called. A very small number responded.

A friend of mine sitting in my table simply made a comment: "It looks like we need to learn Urdu or Hindi to understand what is going on".

Other persons sitting in my table were two young men, one from Egypt and the other from Iran. Both second generation immigrants and fully Americanized. Both left the party long before food was served. I had lengthy and interesting conversation with them. One of them asked me if the ceremony was a typical Bangladeshi wedding.

Yes, I was attending the wedding ceremony of a Bangladeshi couple  both born in Bangladesh who came to the US very recently.

I could not relate to any thing Bangladeshi or Islamic in any thing that I saw last night. Later when I explained my feelings and experience I was told that Bangladeshi weddings are like that now a days.

Marriage is one of the most important institution in our society and as such this is regarded as a time to acquire blessing and good wishes from the family members and friends. All I saw last night was indecent jokes, rough talks, loud music and vulgar dances.

Is this the way we want our children to start the new phase of their lives?

I have attended many weddings in this country where the guests were   from diverse ethnic backgrounds, though mostly from the Indian sub-continent. I am used to weddings starting with the recitation from the Quran with translation, proper arrangements for prayer, sober introduction of family members, good food, sophisticated music some times Bangla, Urdu or Hindi classics.  Besides Muslims, guests also include local American Christian and Hindus (both from India and Bangladesh).

Yet last night the huge hall was mostly full of Banladeshi Muslims (with the exception of the two guests I just mentioned).

I would request members of this forum who are dedicated member of all the scores of Bangladeshi associations to realize that in our zeal to hold on to Bangladeshi nationalism and our disregard for Islam we are losing our children to a cheap form of culture which is most unhealthy and far removed from the decent simple Bangladeshi culture we should be proud of.

I fully understand that many people in our society are not very serious about Islam but to the best of my knowledge most people are very proud of our language. I left the wedding hall with this thought in my mind: why are our children turning to this cheap, vulgar, loud popular Bollywood (I was told that this is what it is called) culture. Where is the Bangla culture?  I do not know this Bangladeshi culture.

Science and religion are two greatest manifestations of human life. But are they compatible or must they of necessary conflict? And to what degree are they complementary and to what degree are they in opposition? We tried to seek the answer through the collection of essays  compiled in this Bangla book named, "Biggan O Dhormo : Shonghat naki Shomonnoy?". I have compiled the articles into a  e-book format that has been kept in our site:

http://www.mukto-mona.com/project/Biggan_dhormo2008/

In this stimulating collection of articles various thoughts and aspects of science and philosophy have been assembled. Among the topics discussed are the Big Bang and the origin of universe, intelligent design and creationism vs. evolution, the nature of the soul, near-death-experiences, communication with the dead, why people believe in God and religion, the relationship between science, religion and ethics, the relationship between women and religion; secularism, fundamentalism etc. This is probably the first book of such kind in Bangla.

I would like to thank the writers who contributed for the collection. I hope the readers will enjoy the book and appreciate our effort.

[ALOCHONA] RE: [notun_bangladesh] Re: Bangladesh Coastline Rising

For last few months, until about a month ago, I found several people (eventually being extremely scared), were posting several times, about 25 meter sea level rise. Bangladeshis were getting scared like the chicklets reading those terrible news of submerging underneath the sea. However, as far as I know, this is an issue which is not very clear yet; and the general public have nothing much to do about it, except voicing to stop the big polluters to reduce and ultimately stop polluting. You may not believe, but the wet rice cultivation and burning coal contributed most of the green house gases and also the harmful gases that atre destroying the ozone layer. Oil is only the second culprit in the list. These pollutions must be stopped. But it is not always very easy economically, infrstructurewise, and food production wise. We can not stop rice production, stop wet and under water ploughing that contributes a significant amount of greenhouse gas, and can not ask all coal burning plants to stop burning coals, can not ask all motorists to stop driving, etc. So, it is necessary to learn the facts on this issue, try sincerely to make adjustments, approach towards amicable solution by the world folks together. Individual country can't do anything about it. Excess of everything is bad. Remaining indifferent about these environmental problems would be very wrong, I would equate it with some kind of crime, but some of the environmental activists are scarring and terrifying people giving wrong information to public. Like, the posting below is citing 25 meter sea level rise, giving reference to Professor James Hansen, the director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The following link is for that published article. Please read it. You will not find 25 meter sea level rise anywhere in this article.

http://climateprogress.org/2007/05/25/yet-another-must-read-by-james-hansen/

Professor James Hansen mentioned, ' Rahmstorf (2007) has noted that if one uses the observed sea level rise of the past century to calibrate a linear projection of future sea level, BAU warming will lead to a sea level rise of the order of one meter in the present century.' However, he thinks if the West Antarctic ice sheet is largely depleted then a non-linear action may start that may yield a sea level rise of the order of 5 m this century. This has not been proven, and just a mere guess yet. The opposite may also happen that the other scientists think that the melting of huge amount of ice may cool off the existing warm sea current that keeps north-western Europe warm. That will definitely affect the environment. So, many variables are not yet known on this issue and where we general public can't do too much about other than learning and voicing, we should not be scarred and alarmed. Lets try to remain awake and learn as much as we can on these types of crucial issues.

I could not stop myself telling one thing is that about a decade ago when ethanol issue started surfacing, I always said that the ethanol will do lot more harm than good for the humanity. Business tycoons will step into it and convert a lot of human food to the cars. It will accelerate hunger worldwide because the export will stop and the less fortunate countries who can not produce their food will die by hunger. It is happening now. Company like ADM grabbed entire American Prairies, which is by the way, world's food basket. Most all food grains are going to local ethanol plants rather than being exported outside. Food value rose skyrocketed all over the world, including USA, who used to feed the entire world. Now ethanol's contribution !!!!! Ethanol pollutes is polluting the environment in the process if manufacturing 5 times more that what it would save the environment while burning in the car. It also takes more than 3 times cost to the same amount of gasoline for manufacturing. So, what we are gaining from ethanol?

When we make an issue scary, political opportunists line up with profiteer business tycoons, and eye washes public by this and that and scary public hails it but in course of time truth comes out when repairing the damage becomes too late.
Please see the article which is ''Church_White_Study on Global sea-level rise'' in the following link:

http://www.pol.ac.uk/psmsl/author_archive/church_white/GRL_Church_White_2006_024826.pdf
This study indicates that in this century only 1/3 meter of sea level will rise.
We do not know yet what will happen. Lets remain informed, educated, active but calm. There is no reason for scarring. There is another phenomenon existing for the lower Bangladesh which is the river born silts from Himalayas, India, Nepal and Upper Bangladesh. This silt sedimentation at the earth surface in Bangladesh is lifting the bed height higher day by day and I believe it will not be less that the rate of sea level rise. Let some good scientists study that phenomenon. There is no good publication on it yet. Lets wait and see what happens.
Regards,
K. Raisuddin

Bangladesh landmass 'is growing'

By Mark Dummett
BBC News, Dhaka

People walk through a river to get into town July 25, 2008 in the port city of Chittagong, Bangladesh
Bangladeshis are used to frequent flooding

New research shows Bangladesh may not be as vulnerable to rising sea levels caused by climate change as previously feared, scientists in Dhaka say.

They say satellite images show the country's landmass is actually growing because of sediment dumped by rivers. A report by UN scientists has projected that rising sea levels will inundate 17% of Bangladesh by 2050, making about 30 million people homeless. One its authors said he saw little in the new research to change his mind.

'New islands'

Satellite images of Bangladesh over the past 32 years show that the country is growing annually by about 20 square kilometres (12.5 square miles), said Maminul Haque Sarker of the Dhaka-based Centre for Environment and Geographic Information Services.

This was due, he said, to the billion tonnes of sediment that the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and 200 other rivers bring from the Himalayas each year before crossing Bangladesh. Only about a third of this sediment, he said, makes it into the Bay of Bengal. Much of the rest is dumped in Bangladesh's vast delta, attaching itself to river banks, or even creating new islands. Mr Sarkar said that in the next 50 years this could add up to the country gaining 1,000 square kilometres.

But others maintain that Bangladesh is going to lose land over that period. Dr Atiq Rahman, a lead author of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, told the BBC that there was little in the new research to make him think that their projection needed revising. He said that many people living along the coast had observed that sea levels where higher now than in their grandparents' day. "The rate at which sediment is deposited and new land is created is much slower than the rate at which climate change and sea level rises are taking place," he said.

So while some new land may be created in parts of the country, elsewhere a much larger amount of land will disappear, he said. In any case, the new land will take decades to become useful, and so compensate for fertile farmland that was flooded. Dr Rahman said that what is needed now is a village-by-village survey of coastal Bangladesh.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Bangladesh Coastline Rising

Bangladesh growing in size by 12.5 sq miles a year

Bangladesh is increasing in size contradicting forecasts that the parts of the country will disappear under water due to global warming.

Scientists at the Centre for Environment and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) say that the country's landmass has increased by 20 square kilometres (12.5 square miles) annually. They said that they have studied 32 years of satellite images and found that the country's landmass has increased by 20 square kilometres annually during that time.

Data shows that the sediment travelling down the Ganges and the Brahmaputra rivers from the Himalayan watershed are creating new land as they wash into the Bay of Bengal, they said.

Mominul Haque Sarker, Head of the department at the CEGIS that looks at boundary changes, said a billion tonnes of sediment that the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and 200 other rivers bring from the Himalayas each year before crossing Bangladesh had caused the landmass to increase.

About a third of this sediment, he said, makes it into the Bay of Bengal, where new territory is forming, he said.Sarkar said that in the next 50 years this could add up to the country gaining 1,000 square kilometres.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted that Bangladesh, criss-crossed by a network of more than 200 rivers, will lose 17 per cent of its land by 2050 because of rising sea levels due to global warming.

The Nobel Peace Prize-winning panel says 20 million Bangladeshis will become environmental refugees by 2050 and the country will lose some 30 percent of its food production.

Director of the US-based NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, professor James Hansen, paints an even grimmer picture, predicting the entire country could be under water by the end of the century.

But Sarker said that while rising sea levels and river erosion were both claiming land in Bangladesh, many climate experts had failed to take into account new land being formed from the river sediment.

"Satellite images dating back to 1973 and old maps earlier than that show some 1,000 square kilometres of land have risen from the sea," Sarker said."A rise in sea level will offset this and slow the gains made by new territories, but there will still be an increase in land. We think that in the next 50 years we may get another 1,000 square kilometres of land."

Mahfuzur Rahman, Head of Bangladesh Water Development Board's Coastal Study and Survey Department, has also been analysing the buildup of land on the coast. He said findings by the IPCC and other climate change scientists were too general and did not explore the benefits of land accretion.

"For almost a decade we have heard experts saying Bangladesh will be under water, but so far our data has shown nothing like this," he said."Natural accretion has been going on here for hundreds of years along the estuaries and all our models show it will go on for decades or centuries into the future."

Dams built along the country's southern coast in the 1950s and 1960s had helped reclaim a lot of land and he believed with the use of new technology, Bangladesh could speed up the accretion process, he said.

"The land Bangladesh has lost so far has been caused by river erosion, which has always happened in this country. Natural accretion due to sedimentation and dams have more than compensated this loss," Rahman said.

Bangladesh has built a series of dykes to prevent flooding."If we build more dams using superior technology, we may be able to reclaim 4,000 to 5,000 square kilometres in the near future," Rahman said.

[ALOCHONA] Indo-Bangladesh relation: Friendship with an aggressive enemy.

Indo-Bangladesh relation: Friendship with an aggressive enemy.

By Mohammad Zainal Abedin

On the night of July 17, 2008, Indian BSF intruding 1.5km inside Bangladesh shot and killed two soldiers of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) without any provocation while the 2-day foreign secretary-level meeting between India and Bangladesh was in progress in New Delhi. This type of incidents takes place frequently, which simply uncovers India's ugly behaviour with Bangladesh.

Time has come to tell officially that India is not a trusted friend of Bangladesh. During the last 37 years it was repeatedly proved that India is inimical to Bangladesh. It is imperative to tell on the face of Indian leadership that their attitude is contrary to friendship. They should either shun their aggressive attitude and policies against Bangladesh or declare themselves as the foe of Bangladesh. My study on the Indians and their duel policies against Bangladesh made me to make such blunt comments. India verbally claims that it is our friend, but practically its acts prove that it is our enemy. Friendship and enmity cannot go side by side, as the former is contrary to the latter. India is our overt friend but covert enemy. It is easier to face an overt enemy than a covert one.

Common people in most cases cannot recognize a covert foe. As a result many of our common people are confused. For this reason it is difficult to create public opinion against such enemy like India that overtly claims itself as the ally of Bangladesh. India on the other hand, succeeded in managing a group of politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, intellectuals, member of civil society, university teachers, journalists, trade unionists, students, cultural activists who round the clock preach that India is a friend in need. To justify their claim these people refer to India's support for our liberation war in 1971. But they never refer to money and materials that India misappropriated, which were sent from all over the world for the refugees who took shelter in India. They even, as if, forgot the plunder that India committed in Bangladesh just after December 16, 1971. According to a conservative estimate after the 16th December India plundered assets of Bangladesh worth Tk. 60 thousand crores. The extent of Indian exploitation under the cover of legal business and smuggling exceeded thousands of billions of dollars over the last 37 years.

Those intentional and preplanned plunders prove that India extended its support in our war of liberation not for our sake or on humanitarian ground, but to exploit and squeeze us and implement its expansionist design by weakening, if possible, wiping out the existence of the Muslim homelands from the south Asian region.

India ugly behaviour is not confined only in plundering Bangladesh. By blockading the waters of the international rivers, India causes Bangladesh's agriculture, fishery, water transport system, ecology and environment and forestation through India-made drought during the dry season and repeated floods in the rainy season. Indian ignition to covert and overt subversive activities that include general strike, sit-in and blockade, arson on vehicles and industrial installations and business establishments, etc., cause heavy loss to Bangladesh's economy, divert foreign investment to India, and ruin its rising industrial growth that ultimately make Bangladesh dependent on India. Adopting many nefarious tactics India ruined our large and medium scale industries to make Bangladesh its monopoly market. Applying same tactics India captures our international market of jute, shrimps, tea, readymade garment products, medicine, cement, etc. It even slanders against our armed forces working in UN Peacekeeping Missions and Bangladeshi immigrants working and residing in different countries.

India designs to capture our mineral and sea resources and control and later capture Bangladesh in the name of transit. It let loose
its agents to secede Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), one-tenth area of Bangladesh. India illegally keeps Bangladeshi lands of South
Talpthi Islands, Padua, Daikhata, Ashalong (forest in CHT) Muhurir Char and a vast area in shoals of Surma River in Sylhet region of
Bangladesh. To infuriate and provoke the international community India relentlessly propagates that Bangladesh is a haunt of Islamic
terrorists of Osama Bin Laden; so that they allow India to invade Bangladesh in the name of war on terror. In brief it can be said,
India does everything to keep Bangladesh shaky economically, disunited politically, chaotic domestically, isolated diplomatically and weak militarily India without any provocation turns Indo-Bangladesh border the most explosive and dreadful one in the world.

India erected barbed wire-fence along the international border with Bangladesh and setup observation towers to look over quite inside Bangladesh. Indian hooligans enjoying the cover of Indian border security force (BSF) frequently intrude quite inside Bangladesh and loot and plunder crops, cattle and other valuable belongings of the Bangladeshis living in the bordering areas. BSF crullers kill the Bangladeshis without rhyme or reason. During the last two years (2006 and 2007) BSF shot and killed 607 Bangladeshis while in 2008, from January to July 24, BSF killed 79 Bangladeshis, including two BDR personnel. It is alleged to put pressure on Bangladesh during the latest round of Indo-Bangladesh foreign secretary-level meeting held in New Delhi on July 17 and 18 India instigated the BSF whose personnel intruding 1.50km inside Bangladesh shot at BDR personnel and killed two of them on the night of July 17. Bangladesh cannot be threat to India.

According to WIKIPEDIA, the free encyclopedia, India (1,269.219.3 sq miles) is 25 times bigger than Bangladesh (55,126 sq miles) in respect of territory. India is a nuclear power with an armed forces of 2,414, 700 personnel that include army, navy and air force). The number of total active troops is 1,414,000, total troops 3,773,300 and paramilitary forces 1,089,700 while Bangladesh has an ill-equipped armed forces below two lakh (.2 million) personnel.. It is impossible and impractical for Bangladesh to disturb India in any sector, particularly in its border with Bangladesh. It is India that keeps our border volatile and explosive in order to scare our people and weaken them psychologically.

For the last 37 years hundreds of thousands of meetings in several levels were held between the two countries to resolve various irritant problems that India created and imposed on Bangladesh. But those meetings failed to resolve any of them. After every meeting it is customarily claimed that the meeting was held in a free, frank and cordial atmosphere and all the issues concerning the two countries were discussed and both sides agreed to continue the process. Bangladeshis and the world community hear the same cassette for the last 37 years. But the process never ends. If the meetings cannot yield any positive and desired results in one hand and the attitude of India becomes more aggressive and attacking daily what is the benefit of continuing such futile meetings and dialogues.

What is the utility of wasting time and money by attending these meetings for years? Bangladesh should categorically inform India that unless it stops and abandons its all types of expansionist and anti-Bangladesh aggressive policies Bangladesh will no longer sit with it in the same table. Bangladesh has no room to wait for bilateral solution of the disputes, as India adopts dilly-dally policy to kill time. So Bangladesh should seek the mediation and assistance of international community in resolving the problems and disputes that India imposed on us.

India treats our soft and tolerant behaviour as our weakness. For the sake of friendship and cooperation Bangladesh silently consumes India's repeated humiliation that makes India more desperate. The more we remain submissive, the more India becomes aggressive. It also undermines separate identity and sovereign and independent status of Bangladesh. We should revise our entire policy with India. We can no longer bear the burden of Indian friendship. India assistance in our liberation war does not mean that we would allow India to treat Bangladesh as its satellite state like Bhutan or defunct Sikiim. * (Mohammad Zainal Abedin is a Bangladeshi researcher & journalist.)

[mukto-mona] Biggan O Dhormo : Shonghat naki Shomonnoy?" - New MM E-book

[ALOCHONA] BD ambassador in Kuwait should be fired

Dear Alochoks,

I just read in the Daily Star that 100 Bangladeshi workers have been deported back from Kuwait after the recent worker strikes there. Many of the workers deported have been quoted in the Daily Star as saying that the Bangladesh Embassy has not played an active role in the recent worker portests or in protecting the rights of workers.

Having lived in Bahrain, I am aware that the embassy officials are usually not involved in labor relations, even though these laborers send lots of foreign exchange. But beyond that, the larger point is that how come Indian workers are not exploited by the Gulf nations? It must be because Indian Embassy officials are active in such areas.

What is the Bangladesh ambassador doing in Kuwait? Where is the embassy? It is amazing to hear that such testimonials from workers, especially since the Army General paid a visit to Kuwait not too long ago. I have a feeling that this ambassador is nothing more than a suit who rides around in a Mercedes giving boring speeches at the diplomatic corps and enjoying the good life.

I hope that some of our Alochoks in Kuwait can shed some light on this.
