Re: [mukto-mona] Crimes of Taslima Nasreen.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49479

Life being short and Eternity being forever, the religious Muslims prefer
the later. The problem is that they believe that their Prophet can deliver
them eternal happiness. Obviously they haven't read between the lines of
their religious literatures. Imagine Taslima replacing bluntness with
sophistication. She would turn into Rushdie. Only the price on her head
would be raised and the wrath of the believers would multiply.

[mukto-mona] Siraj & Bengal's wealth

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49466

Mr Kamal Das's love for history is praiseworthy but his comments that the 'prosperity' of pre- British Bengal is nothing more than a fantasy are irresponsible, if not outrageous. Why should we lean on Adam Smith , a great economist but no historian at all. If the belief (historically substantiated by Jadunath Sarkar , leave alone English Records which estimated the wealth amassed by Shaista Khan at Rs 640 million, excluding gold and jewellery. He even paid ,rather bribed Rs 20 million in the early 1680s to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for an extension of his governorship. Sarkar estimated it at Rs 9 crores. Imagine Rs 9 crores excluding jewelleries in today's value) is hearsay-based, was Dadabhai Naoroji's 'drain theory' was all false? What did the colonialists loot? The allegation of loot was first hinted by none other than Warren Hastings in his critique of the top bosses of English East India Company.
We all know George Bernard Shaw's terse comment "A conquered nation is like a man with cancer: he can think of nothing else."
The roads, railways, sewer lines, water works, subway stations, electrical grids in Britain were built on the looted gold, spices, opium, sugar cane, and oil from the colonies. "Entire civilizations were reduced to slavery which destroyed the peaceful village culture of Africa and Asia". Take the policy of indentured labour to run plantations in India, Ceylon and Africa. All this had been a part of plunder, leave alone the destruction of the village culture, the population was at the mercy of the Centralized colonialists. The aim was to create chaos and turmoil. The result was pestilence, disease, and death. Unfortunately, SEZs and land acquisition statute-revision even in West Bengal paves the way for recolonisation of Independent India. About Bangladesh, the less said, the better.

Mr Das or members of Mukto-Mona group of netizens should not misunderstand me if I quote what the late M Basavapunnaiah, CPI(M) polit bureau member said about Arun Shourie (now BJP MP) when the latter wrote a 4-part diatribe against the role of CPI during the Quit India Movement of 1942. Shourie claimed falsely that he was the first to study 800 pages from the archives of the movement and over-blamed the CPI without proper study of documents. MB said , Shourie "is stupidly ignorant". I reiterate, I don't mean Mr Das.

Re: [mukto-mona] Devil's Advocate: Taslima Nasrin

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49468

Remember always, Devil is Lucifer. In the good old Roman empire he was
worshiped as the harbinger of knowledge. Can Mohammad Gani(USA) find any
untruth in whatever Taslima said.

[mukto-mona] Re: Article on Taslima Narin's return to India

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49449

Even more garbage from the two bit recalcitrant who has to grant
his "approval" to others who consider him and his kind a bunch of
thugs. Whoever gave this character that authority? Yeah, he knows
some "educated women," the clearest suggestion that thye vast
connections that he wallows amongst are those of people too ignorant
to come out of the muck that he revels in.

This is the mentality of the fundamentalist thug - Mustafiz attacks
Taslima Nasrin's "character" because he has nothing to offer to
counter the arguments that she makes. This classic tactic of
religious thugs has been used to smear those whom they do not like
and who defy the intellectual garbage that the thugs live by and
wallow in. And the man is an ignoramus like fundamentalist thugs
invariably are. Taslima Nasrin received a degree in medicine by
studying for itlong before any doctorate was conferred upon her by anyone. What she has received, among accolades for her writing, include the Simone de Beauvoir award from the government of France. That is vastly more than any two bit joker who opposes her with veiled or open invective is ever likely to get.

[mukto-mona] Crimes of Taslima Nasreen.

I don't like Taslima Naseen but I detest that person who hates Taslima Nasreen. Taslima's modus operandi was wrong, she is short sighted, her sense of morality is questionable, and she is not Isadora Duncan in art nor is she Jane Austin in literature. She just expressed her mind on something she wanted to be explicit. Three days before a letter writer in New Age, a daily English news paper from Dhaka, shed his tears for Islam while castigating Taslima Nasreen and expressed his scholarly satisfaction at the present difficulties facing by her. Some Muslims are so blunt headed about their faith that they live in a world full of hypocrisy and deception. When they claim Islam as a complete code of life they fail to appreciate the true meaning of life. If generosity is a virtue and Islam claims to be generous Taslima Nasreen should not have been a destitute today. Lies deserve abhorrence but when hypocrisy is worshipped as a religion that is dangerous. These so called Islamic mumins could not tolerate a few verbatim from a recalcitrant writer but everyday tolerating the butchery of their fellow Muslims by their own brothers from the same faith. Perhaps it's not a sin in Islam. I ask those Muslim hypocrites to go the killing fields of Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia and see for themselves what Islam has done to those orphans, widows, parents, brothers and sisters and friends.

These morons are ready to sacrifice their lives for a cartoon or a piece of writing but they are not moved by the genocide in the name of Islam. The apologists are prone to raise their voice against America but become blind when the Islamic marauders with the Koran in one hand and grenade on the other hand cold bloodedly murder the innocent. This is a criminal way of believing on a faith. To them Taslima Nasreen is a living danger to Islam but those killers are not. Religion hypocrisy is thy name.

Akbar Hussain

[mukto-mona] Why do our old politicians want to be leaders of 36M poor people?

36m people in Bangladesh face acute poverty, hunger

Staff Reporter

Bangladesh's high economic growth during the last decade has resulted in significant reductions in poverty. However, 36 million people--about one quarter of the country's population--still face acute poverty and hunger.

Addressing this challenge is the focus of the workshop, "Understanding Chronic Poverty and Poverty Dynamics in Rural Bangladesh," that began in Dhaka yesterday. Government officials, researchers, and civil society representatives will discuss new findings on why some households and communities in rural Bangladesh remain trapped in poverty, while others have successfully moved out. These findings will help identify key factors that keep people poor.

The workshop is being organized by the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC), Data Analysis and Technical Assistance Ltd. (DATA), and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

Drawing on information collected from 1,800 households across rural Bangladesh, the study found that while close to half the households surveyed moved out of poverty, around one-fifth remained chronically poor and a small percentage fell into poverty. These households were found to be extremely vulnerable to unexpected shocks, such as illness, dowry and wedding expenses, and floods.

The study focused on three key aspects of poverty in rural Bangladesh: poor people's perceptions of what makes them poor; the factors that create and perpetuate their poverty; and the patterns of loss and gain that they directly experience.

"Unlike previous studies, this research integrates two types of important data-household survey data and individual life histories-to provide a deeper understanding of the causes of chronic poverty in rural Bangladesh," said Bob Baulch, coordinator for the poverty dynamics and economic mobility theme at CPRC.

The study found that those households that have lower education levels, own less land, hold fewer non-land assets and livestock, and have many young children and elderly members, face the most difficulty escaping poverty. Unexpected shocks, such as injuries, illness and livestock deaths, significantly increase the likelihood of chronic poverty. Dowry payments and wedding expenses are a heavy burden for most households.

"This study makes it clear that rural households are particularly vulnerable to crises," said Md Zihadul Hassan, managing director of DATA. "The impact of a crisis, however, greatly depends on how much schooling the head of a household has received, whether property has been divided, and household ownership of livestock and other assets."

Additionally, the study documented eight types of life trajectories based on accounts by people of their direct experiences of moving in and out of poverty. Many of these life trajectories displayed a "saw-tooth" pattern in which improvements in people's lives are reversed by illnesses and large medical expenses, wedding expenses, and legal disputes.

"The life histories collected for this study reveal how improvements in poor people's lives tend to occur gradually, while declines occur suddenly," said Peter Davis, lecturer at the University of Bath and co-researcher of this study. "People's lives follow upward and downward patterns, not a smooth pattern of either progress or decline which is often suggested by more conventional research approaches."

The households in the study are based in 102 villages located in 14 of the country's 64 districts and were originally interviewed between eight and 14 years ago. The researchers revisited the same households in late 2006 and early 2007 to assess the changes in poverty and well-being that occurred over time.

"Unexpected shocks keep people in poverty and prevent them from moving out," said Agnes Quisumbing, senior research fellow at IFPRI. "This study provides a better understanding of these issues and can guide the design of more effective social protection systems for poor people in rural Bangladesh."

[ALOCHONA] You cannot eat coal

Extract from featured article by Rahnuma Ahmed: 'You cannot eat
coal': resistance in Phulbari

Zaeed and Farzana's film, The Blood-Soaked Banner of Phulbari', was
released soon after the killings in 2006. I watch the beginning
sequence. A crowd of men stand at the long-distance bus stand in
Phulbari town, they talk to each other and to the film crew. We are
poor people,' says a man, probably in his late-thirties. If I lose
my home, how will I earn a living? What use will be the coalmine?'
Who will it benefit?

I return to clips from their uncut footage. A younger woman is
sitting in her courtyard, No, I don't have a husband, I live with my
mother, I work with her. In the same place. If the coalmine comes,
we, that is, us mothers-and-daughters, where will we go? We will be
scattered from our relatives, we will lose our ties.'

Where will we go?' This question is repeatedly raised by villagers,
by both men and women, old and young, by farmers, day-labourers,
petty businessmen, schoolchildren, college-going youths, both
Bengalis and adivasis, who belong to Santal, Oraon, Pahan, Mahali and
Munda communities. By Hindus and Muslims.
