Re: [mukto-mona] Siraj & Bengal's wealth

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49487

To make things clear, what geographic area was that Bengal comprised of? If
Shaista Khan amassed Rs. 640 million, excluding gold and ornaments, how much
did Shah Suja loot. The concept that the Industrial Revolution in England
was made by whatever the East India Company plundered from Bengal is another
story to be taken with a pinch of salt. The company was almost always in
the red. If Bengal was so rich, why did the army of Shajahan desert to the
ruler of the Deccan, Aurangzeb, to get paid, and not to the ruler of Bengal,
Suja?

By the wealth of nations, one should consider the amount of natural wealth
the nation has, what the industrial and the business sectors are like, and
how the common people are doing. Weren't Bengal behind other provinces in
all these factors at that period of history? Even Robert Clive was given
Madras as his first place to work in. Had he not taken the guise of a
Tamil, after his camp was over run by the French, we would probably be
talking French by now.

[mukto-mona] Jammu & Kashmir: at Cross roads ISP August 2008 II

Jammu and Kashmir: At Crossroads!

Ram Puniyani

In the aftermath of the Amarnath shrine board land transfer and then reversal of the same, the matters in the state are going from bad to worse. One was witnessing a gradual decline in acts of terror and increase in the democratic space, democratic patterns, despite the heavy presence of the army in the state. With the Shrine board issue being used by the separatist elements and communal elements, the things seem to be heading in the direction which will have far reaching adverse impact on the politics of the region.

There are many a things which the separatist elements exaggerated and took extreme position. Their march to Muzzafarabad, slogan of Azadi got response mainly due to two reasons. The first and the foremost was the perception in the valley that if already the Amarnath yatra is going so well what is the need to transfer the land to the shrine board? For the people of Kashmir Amarnath yatra is one of the significant sources of income and is part of the culture of Kashmir, and has so far never been seen in the communal light. The move of the Governor, Sinha, a covert BJP sympathizer, to Hinduise the yatra was a big blow to the traditions of the valley. The illegal land transfer, nowhere is the forest land transferred for any other purpose. In all cases of melas etc. the land is temporarily used without transfer. Here the complicated story is that the Governor and his Principal Secretary, who was CEO of shrine, maneuvered this illegal move with the help of the forest official in charge, who happened to be his. The state Government's refusal to follow the illegal decision of the board and forest department was stalled by the courts and the seeds of a discord were sown.

One is reminded of the Babri Masjid dispute, where the idols were illegally installed in 1949, the local collector, a RSS sympathizer stalled the removal of the idols sowing the seeds of the problem which finally led to demolition of Babri mosque and giving the flesh and blood and political power to the BJP over a period of time. In valley the Israel Foreign minister Shimon Perez's advice to Advani for changing the demographic profile of the valley is well known. Also the people in the valley have been suffering either the militancy or the rights violation by the army so their sentiments are on the burning point, needing one separatist group to ignite the issue. A sorry state of affairs! Nothing can match the suffering of the people of Kashmir, which had a potential for improvement but things are going haywire now.

Second was the suffering in the valley due to the blockade by the protesters in the Jammu region. This is being denied vehemently by the BJP, which is at the core of the Jammu agitation. The truth is that this agitation did frighten the truck drivers, excesses were committed on the truck drivers, frightening experience for them on the way, coupled with effective blockade of trucks. This led to intense and immediate reaction in the valley. As this was the main artery connecting the valley with country they were deprived of essentials, more so life saving and other medicines, and routine supplies. Secondly the backbone of economy, the export of fruits suffered leading to depression in the already emaciated economy. In this backdrop the march to Muzzafrabad, capital of Pakistan occupied Kashmir, appealed to the people.

The tale of Jammu has the other elements tragedy. In this predominantly Hindu majority area, there are many grievances, the major one being around the step-motherly treatment to this region by the J&K administration. Always in the policy planning Jammu gets a backseat and Kashmir valley the first priority. Also the emigration of pundits from valley has been misrepresented and complex issue of ethno-regional-Pakistan intervention issue has been presented as a communal one. The emigration of Pundits, a tragic story has been used by the RSS combine to the hilt to create a communal atmosphere. In this scenario the discontent in the valley due to reversal of land transfer came in as triggering factor and all the dam of discontent burst. This in turn affected the lives of people in the valley. While it seems that the Jammu agitation cuts across the political lines, surely it is the BJP associates who are in the driver's seat and others have meekly surrendered to this agitation.

Advani's attempt to present valley people as anti national and those of Jammu as National is fraught with dangers. While the central government is playing its old role of silent spectator, helplessly watching separatists and communalists stoke the fires on both the sides. This is akin to its role in opening the gates of Babri Mosque and playing fiddle when the Mosque was being demolished by RSS and company. There are many other analogies, a sense of déjà vu with the Babri issue are there. In case of Babri, BJP's interest was in demolishing the mosque, while it was presented as the one for building Ram Temple. It did demolish it, came to power but Ram temple was nowhere to be seen. In case of Amarnath Yatra also it is not interested in the yatra itself but in issues which can ignite communal passions and help it come to power, and that's what its agenda is.

One of the logics given for land transfer was the increase in the number of pilgrims, due to which more facilities and space is needed. The point is, more number of pilgrims is a threat to ecological balance and the Amarnath cave cannot take more pilgrims as that is causing the warming and melting of Shiv ling, the Phallus like structure, revered by the pilgrims. In other such places like Gangotri and Gomukh, because of similar reasons, BJP has been demanding a restriction in the number of pilgrims to protect the holy place and environment. So why these double standards? The answer is too easy to guess, and BJP, a shrewd party realizes that it is not religiosity which is important but its political encashment what matters.

All in all Jammu and Kashmir has been treated by the neighboring countries, Pakistan and India as a beautiful woman, whom both want to own, irrespective of what she wishes! The so called patriots are treating the Kashmir issue as a real estate issue, the life of the people does not figure in the calculation of the powers involved in the dispute.

Today many ideologues are arguing that Azadi is the solution, some of them are arguing that economically people of state stand to benefit if the old trade routes to Pakistan are normalized. In this charged up atmosphere, in this strategically located area, is it not overdue that the wishes of regions, dialogue between all concerned parties are the guiding factor rather than the legalistic and 'blind nationalist' approaches? J&K did legally accede to India, but at the same time one has to realize that right form the beginning the autonomy which was promised in the treaty of accession, was never honored and the clauses of the treaty were violated with impunity. The US designs to have a presence in the region through the proxy of Pakistan, in a region surrounded by Communist (Russia, China) and socialist (as India was supposed to be), were well planned. After the US sponsored Al Qaeda completed its assignment of defeating Russian armies in Afghanistan, the same indoctrinated Al Qaeda elements did enter J&K to communalize a regional ethnic issue. We need to overcome the Hindu-Muslim approach and look at all the concerned issues in an objective dispassionate manner. Hope all these complexities and grievances of the people of Jammu, the people of Kashmir valley form the basis of peaceful and just solution to the present turmoil in the state.

[mukto-mona] Let India face the music

India needs a bashing at NSG which should not bend rules by agreeing to supply nucl fuel to any non-NPT state, especially with record of nuclear-arms testing. Moreover, creation of NSG was a sequel to the Pokhran test of 1974 - a treachery as the reactor, donated by Canada, was on condition that India would use it for peaceful purpose. I fully endorse the opinion, expressed in the pasted piece.
SR

Don't Loosen Nuclear Rules for India By Edward J. Markey and Ellen O. Tauscher 19  Aug 08 (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/20/opinion/20markey.html?ref=opinion)
Washington
IN the next day or so, an obscure organization will meet to decide the fate of an Indian nuclear deal that threatens to rapidly accelerate New Delhi's arms race with Pakistan — a rivalry made all the more precarious by the resignation on Tuesday of the Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf.
Nonetheless, President Bush is lobbying the Nuclear Suppliers Group, which governs international nuclear commerce, to waive its most crucial rules in order to allow the trade of reactors, fuel and technology to India. If the president gets his way, the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty — for 50 years, the bulwark against the spread of nuclear weapons — would be shredded and India's yearly nuclear weapons production capability would likely increase from 7 bombs to 40 or 50.
India's nuclear history is checkered at best, and New Delhi has been denied access to the international nuclear market for three decades. The reasons are well known: the country has never signed the nonproliferation treaty or the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, it misused civilian nuclear technology to produce its first nuclear weapon in 1974, and it continues to manufacture nuclear weapons to this day.
Paradoxically, the Nuclear Suppliers Group was formed in direct response to India's illegal 1974 nuclear test. Its central purpose is to ensure that no other country exploits foreign nuclear energy assistance to make a bomb, as India did. If the group accedes to President Bush's dangerous request, countries such as Iran and North Korea would certainly use the precedent to their advantage.
The Indian nuclear deal threatens international security not only by undermining our nuclear rules, but also by expanding India's nuclear weapons program. That's because every pound of uranium that India is allowed to import for its power reactors frees up a pound of uranium for its bomb program.
Pakistan, with its unstable government and Al Qaeda sanctuaries, is already ratcheting up its nuclear weapons program in an attempt to keep pace with its regional rival. Just last month, the Pakistani government darkly announced that waiving the nuclear rules for India "threatens to increase the chances of a nuclear arms race in the subcontinent."
Because changes to these international rules can be made only by unanimous agreement, every country in the 45-nation group has the ability and the duty to insist that this flawed nuclear deal be improved and to ensure that nuclear trade with India cannot benefit New Delhi's nuclear weapons program.
Thankfully, there is an easy solution. The group can say yes to nuclear trade with India if two simple conditions are met. First, India must sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, a step already taken by 178 other countries and every member state of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. After all, why should the group's members grant India a huge exemption from the rules that they themselves are supposed to follow?
Second, India must agree to halt production of nuclear material for weapons. That doesn't mean that India has to give up the weapons it has, or even that it cannot make more weapons with the nuclear material it has already produced. But by closing down its manufacturing of new plutonium and highly enriched uranium, India would prove to the international community that opening up nuclear commerce would not assist, either directly or indirectly, its nuclear weapons program.
This deal was foolish when Pakistan was relatively stable; with Mr. Musharraf gone, an arms race on the subcontinent would likely be more difficult to control. But even if the president continues to insist on the deal, he can't do it alone. He needs the 44 other countries in the Nuclear Suppliers Group to acquiesce. And the group, created to prevent the further spread of the atom, would vote itself out of existence if it allowed India to have nuclear technology with no strings attached.
Edward J. Markey, a Democrat of Massachusetts, is co-chairman of the House Bipartisan Task Force on Nonproliferation. Ellen O. Tauscher, a Democrat of California, is chairwoman of the House Strategic Forces Subcommittee.

[mukto-mona] Re: Article on Taslima Nasrin's Return to India

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49491

Again, a set of hilarious assertions from the two bit fundamentalist
who cannot resist putting both his feet in his mouth.

Mustafiz says Quote [We all know how some of these world renowned Awards
like Simone de Beauvoir or Nobel Prizes are awarded.] End Quote

My response: A non-entity like you will never know how the process
works. Stop acting presumptuous. You sound ridiculous.

Mustafiz says, further Quote [Such awards are given if the purpose of Uncle Sam and his cousins are fulfilled.] End Quote

My response: The Nobel for Peace is awarded by the government of
Norway and has nothing to do with the USA. The Simone de Beauvoir
Award is awarded by the Government of France. In recent years the Nobel for Peace, for the information of your kind, has been awarded to people like Rigoberta Menchu and Wa'angari Mathai who have been among the fiercest critics of the USA. SO much for your nonsensical assertions that these prizes are manipulated by the Americans. This confirms the fact that you are a pathetic ignoramus and a harlequin of grand proportions.

Mustafiz says Quote [That does not always make a person great - especially a person like Taslima Nasrin.] End Quote

My response: Considering that you had to offer your "approval" for
others to have their opinions, I have little hesitation in consigning
your remarks to the trashcan.

Mustafiz asks Quote [Instead of awarding her why doesn't the French
government give her full citizenship?] End quote

My response: I have to reiterate the fact that you are an ignoramus.
The Swedish government offered her citizenship but she preferred to
live in India. The governments of Norway and Sweden offer Nobel
Prizes but I cannot recall a single instance when someone who got the
Nobel has applied for citizenship afterwards. Stop being a clown, or,
what the heck, go on. We all need to laugh once in a while.

If this is the level of opposition to Dr Nasrin, then I can rest
assured that those leading a campaign against her are a band of
imbecilic obscurantists. I haven't laughed harder than I have at this
clownish performance in a long time. I must thank Mustafiz for the
entertainment that he unwittingly offers.

[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh’’s ”micro-credit” man says India needs legislation for micro-credit service

Bangladesh''s "micro-credit" man says India needs legislation for micro-credit service

Bangalore, Aug 20 (ANI): Nobel Laureate and founder of Grameen Bank of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus has said that India needs legislative and regulatory back to provide micro credit service to the poor.
Speaking to media here last evening, the Nobel laureate said, "Two things are important in spreading micro-credit in India. One is legislation to create micro-credit banks, small banks, who does this lending of micro-credit to the poorest people and then a regulatory authority which oversees this operation."
Elaborating the need for extending micro-credit service in the healthcare sector, Yunus accentuated the inability of poor people to access money in crucial times.
"We are trying to go into healthcare, because if you are poor it almost implies without question that you are poor in health. So it goes together. So, we are trying to see now that we have brought the micro-credit, the financial service, how to bring the health care to the poor people and its possible," added Yunus.
He also pressed upon the fact that the mission of the micro-credit banks should be service oriented and not profit making. He was here to launch micro-credit scheme for cardiac patients.
The loan scheme of the State Bank of India (SBI) is first of its kind in which the bank is offering loan up to 50,000 at 8.5 per cent interest for cardiac patients who are below poverty line and their earning is less than two dollars a day. (ANI)

Mr. Golam,

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. I come from a small village in Bangladesh. I left Bangladesh in 1981; visited last time in 1989, when my mother expired. The BNP/Jamat, with their communal policies, has changed the societal psyche so much, I am afraid, that I will not be welcome anymore in my motherland, and my dreamland will forever remain in my dreams. There is nothing more so sad than this feeling in me. I salute you for what you have been doing. I know first hand what's the status of women in the society. I love to discuss the issue with you and looking forward to seeing you someday. Stay well and and be safe.
