[ALOCHONA] Who's plotting to torpedo election roadmap?

Who's plotting to torpedo election roadmap?

M. Shahidul Islam

"If something can go wrong, it will," so posits the Murphy's Law. As many things are going the wrong way to derail the scheduled polling in December, people smells the existence of a thickening plot which can endanger the nation's resilience to thrust ahead as an aspiring democracy. The fomenting of such a plot can be seen both inductively and deductively. What has caused the 1/11 and the postponement of the February 2007 election is still causing much of the troubles with respect to the ensuing election too.

Looking back one finds, even after the removal of the controversial CEC and relenting to most of the demands of then 14- party- alliance, the Awami League (AL) and its leaders did not desist in late 2006 from waging a war with 'Boitha-Logi'. Worse still, they even resorted to inhuman killing of opposition political activists in broad day light.
The mood of the time revealed the AL's diehard determination to ascend to power at any cost and to justify that singular aim by employing all available means, including murder and mayhem. What followed are footnotes of history by now.

Contrary to the AL's expectation that the military would pack the BNP into the museum of antiquity- just because the AL and its secular allies are friends of the West and India- the military and the CG behaved in a much fairer and neutral manner, nabbing the political and business criminals of all denominations and putting them on trial.

Ever since, much water has flown beneath the Jamuna bridge and the AL leader Sheikh Hasina was released on parole months ago. Another top leader of the party, Abdul Jalil, was allowed to go for treatment abroad. In the USA, UK and Canada, Hasina was received by top diplomats of the nation (deservedly so as the former PM) and the CG and its 'garrison gurus' seemed predisposed to whisk the AL into power due to pressure from powers without. That seemed like the beginning of a dark age, and, although the prevalence of emergency rules did not facilitate the venting of grievances by the aggrieved, the pro-Khaleda faction of the BNP kept crying in the wild against what seemed like a nakedly pro-AL partisan attitude of the CG.

Observers at home and abroad, however, deduced the CG's leverage on power as wobbly and shivering. "The CG was doing what the West and India wanted it to do," mourned some observers in private. Meanwhile, mindful of this ongoing machination, Khaleda Zia remained stubborn and resolutely opposed to any deal making with the CG despite Tareq Zia's critical health condition having deteriorated further. Sources say, in desperation, Khaleda sent a message in mid-August to one senior General of the army with a dire warning that 'she would not compromise on anything other than a fair election as per the EC's roadmap, come what may.' That is what has caused a tectonic shift in the seemingly pro-AL stance of the CG once some senior military officers made it clear that the military must be seen as fair and the election without BNP's participation would be meaningless.
Anecdotes of this nature are not mere gossips, and hearsay too deserves evaluation on the scale of probability. Besides, we have no reason not to believe that such a 'behind the scene' maneuvering did not occur in recent weeks, especially when reports say Khaleda and Tareq are on their way out of the prison and the legal ground has been paved smoothly to make that happen sooner.

Add to this the BNP and Jamat secretary generals' meeting with Khaleda in prison last week and the CEC's virtual rendering of an apology for having invited the reformist faction of the BNP into a dialogue with the EC earlier. All these are indicative of the CG's changed mindset to hold an election with participation of all major stakeholders. That's undoubtedly a good omen in so far as the peace, stability and progress of the nation are concerned. But the AL does not seem to want any of those. The party is too busy in injecting one after another divisive issues into the body politic of the nation and finds it difficult to crawl out of the cocooned 'one-party-mentality' of the 1970s.

Remonstrating at the news of Tarek Rahman's forthcoming release, AL's acting secretary general Syed Ashraful Islam said, "If the godfather of corruption is released, government has no moral or legal right to keep anybody else in captivity." The AL also demanded on August 31 that the election be held in November, instead of December.
The demand for November polling came soon after the CEC's rendering of regrets for having invited the 'Major Hafiz faction' of the BNP into a dialogue with the EC. With that warning, the AL wanted to push the EC into a tighter spot, despite being aware that the voters list would not be finalized before late October.

Then, there are blames being poured against the judiciary for granting bails to BNP captives and for absolving many of the alleged accused of the jail killing incident of November 1975 due to, according to judges, lack of evidence.

Let us now put some doses of rationality into these accusations, especially the ones being leveled against the Judiciary. Was the court fair when Hasina, Jalil and many others were granted bail? Why should the blame of unfairness only spring

A girl's journey to the White House

Ripan Kumar Biswas

Although this quality does not qualify them for a free pass to the White House, but the new life they dawned on Bridget, is a great story and goes a long way to show that the McCain family is a family of honor and kindness.

The job requirement for the White House is completely different and just a kind heart wont do it. Bridget learned of her role in 2000 South Carolina primary, how her color was used to fuel race-baiting rumors that helped sink her father's campaign. But she was present with her mother Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), along with her siblings Jack, James, and Meghan during a walk thru on day three of the Republican National Convention (RNC) at the Xcel Energy Center on September 3, 2008 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Republican or Grand Old Party (GOP) has nominated Sen. John McCain as the Republican choice for U.S. President on September 4, 2008.

It's a remarkable story, one that probably doesn't get told enough. John McCain is the father of seven children - three of them adopted. The story of his daughter, Bridget McCain, is especially touching and tells a lot about what kind of people John and Cindy McCain are. According toWes Gullett, a former aide to McCain, told the audience in St. Paul that Mrs. McCain had spotted Bridget and another child among 160 abandoned babies at a centre run by the late Mother Teresa in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Although she didn't go to Bangladesh with the intention of adopting a child, but sometime in 1991 after the devastating April 29th cyclone in Bangladesh, Cindy McCain spent a month there with her charity, the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT). There were two little baby girls – one with a heart problem and the other with a severe cleft palate. She immediately decided to get both of them back to US with her as she was primarily concerned about their medical treatment and their survival. Bridget McCain suffered from a severe cleft pallet, and Nicole Gullett Petersen, who was born prematurely, was dangerously malnourished. Wes Gullett and his wife Deborah adopted Nicole Gullett Petersen, who is a high school sophomore now.

There's a lot of really nasty stuff out there about both the Obama and the McCain's family. The good stuff is rarely discussed. Bridget McCain had become a sort of an issue during the campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination in South Carolina during the year 2000. John was criticized and was accused of having an affair with another woman. There was lot of prejudice and the reason for accusation was because Bridget's skin was darker. She was called as illegitimate black daughter of McCain born to a prostitute. This had a strong effect on the conservative South Carolina republicans. In addition, a lot of phone calls were made by people who said McCain's family should be very ashamed about her, about the color of her skin. Such hurtful and vile things were said about her.

According to an article in the New York Times that focuses on Cindy McCain's money, Meghan, Jack, and James, the biological children of Mr. and Mrs. McCain, each have 7.73 percent of Hensley & Company. But Bridget McCain, the McCain's adopted daughter, has shares worth 3.4 percent. As a teenager, she likes to attend school in Phoenix, plays basketball and volleyball, and hang out with friends rather caring how much money she is getting from her parents.

In his first look at Bridget in Phoenix airport, McCain was not the tough war hero senator, Cindy says. He was like every other new father, full of love and emotion. However, the McCain family had to go through an extraordinary process, rather an intrusive process by the bureaucrats to adopt Bridget McCain. The adoption agency officials came to their home rifled through their drawers and even asked John about his sex life.

Believing people are people are people, many Americans are satisfied as they don't hear the McCain's bragging about their humanitarian efforts. They are not trying to make a big deal out of having a multi-racial family. But critics are active against Obama or McCain. Why is it necessary to make their daughter a topic in the convention? Is it to score cheap political points? Why didn't they talk about the birth of Jimmy, or the pregnancy of Meaghan? How the now very wealthy Senator Obama has stepped into help his own flesh and blood brother who lives on one dollar a month? He hasn't helped him, as he's too busy pontificating on how Americans aren't a giving enough people.

Families are involved in campaigns. The Obama campaign uses their daughters. But there has been very little coverage about Bridget McCain. People can hardly accuse the McCain family of sacrificing their daughter's well being for the sake of the campaign. Though all seven McCain children (including two Sen. McCain adopted from his first marriage) are supportive of their father, but they prefer their privacy to the glare of the campaign trail. The McCain family wants to make sure their boys get no special treatment and same goes for their five other children. Their 21-year-old son, Jack, is poised to graduate from Annapolis and also could join the Marines as a Second Lieutenant and their 19-year-old Marine, Jimmy, is preparing for his second tour of duty in gulf countries.

Many well wishers of Democrats think that if Obama wins and the U.S. becomes even more multicultural than it already is, then Bridget could have quite a good life. Maybe an interview would shed some light on how she has been treated or until she writes her memoir what she feels. But the Republicans are saying that the girl has all the things Democrats are screaming they want for all and just because a republican has chosen to give her the best the question motives.

John McCain is not in cahoots with Bush and Cheney. As a republican, Bush and Cheney are, of course, backing him. But, Bush and John McCain have a long track record of butting heads. Claims that McCain is just another George W Bush are ludicrous, especially since the two of them haven't been the best of friends in the past. They've not had a wholly amicable relationship and they disagree on a lot of major issues. Many Americans believe that McCain isn't a typical republican, by any means. That's how he got the nickname "maverick" - he's different. And according to the many supporters of McCain, if he becomes president, he'll shake things up in Washington just like he has been doing for years.

Similarly, according to the many well wishers of Republican, if these people don't deserve to be in the White House, then who does. But whatever, I feel proud while I was in front of the White House as a visitor last weekend.

SYNOPSIS OF RESEARCH WORKS FROM A FEW COUNTRIES

RESEARCH ON COWS :
The following "still to be published" findings have been taken from
the research works of an expert on cow sciences. The expert conducted
the entire research by himself with extremely limited fund and
equipments.
(01) A mother-cow remembers her calf every 1 hour 32 minutes and
27.23 seconds when she is awake and never, when asleep.
(02) While walking, the mother cow looks for her calf by turning her
head to a maximum of 45.001 Degree to the right and 34.95 Degree to
the left.
(03) In case the cow cannot find her calf within this range, she
takes a turn of 65.23 degrees to the right and starts walking.
(04) The mother cow starts running towards the calf 12.232 seconds
after she finds it.
(05) If one wants to take the mother-cow in any direction, he should
carry the calf.

RESEARCH ON FLIES :
Scientists of the Institute of Biology, California, USA conducted
research on flies by using ultra-modern digital camera and
sophisticated gadgets. The findings of the research work has been
published in journal : "Current Biology" on August 28, 2008 and the
news was published in the Daily Samakal on Aug. 30, 2008. Scientist
Michael Dickinson of the above research team disclosed the following :
(01) A fly takes the decision to move away within 200 Milliseconds.
(02) The fly can calculate the direction from which it may be
attacked within this time.
(03) A fly uses legs and wings in order to move in the direction,
opposite to the attacker.
(04) In case the fly intends to move back it extends its front legs
forward and lowers the head.
(05) If one intends to kill a fly, he should slap on its escape route.

RESEARCH ON CHEWING GUM :
Scientists of the Department of Behavioral and Brain Science, Swinburn
University, Australia conducted research on Chewing Gum. The findings
of this research was presented in the 10th International Seminar of
Risho University, Tokyo, Japan on 30 August, 2008. The news was
published in the Daily Samakal, on September 01, 2008. Prof. Andrew
Scolly of the research team disclosed the following :
(01) Worries are lessened during the chewing of the chewing gum.
(02) Chewing gum increases the working efficiency of men.
(03) Those who chew chewing gum have worries less than 10% to 17%.
(04) Chewing gum lessens psychological pressure by 12% to 16%.
(05) A man remains more careful during the time of chewing.

CONCLUSION :
While the researches on FLIES and CHEWING GUM were done by world
famous doctors cum scientists of USA and Australia, that on COW was
done by our Gedar Baap from Hangalsree, Rajshahi. As for instrument he
used his beating stick and of course, his brain. Gedar Baap believes
that he has got a superior brain because in 1971 his countrymen
defeated Pakistan (where Pakistan was enforced by the elected
governments of USA and China, and dictator Kings of the Gulf
countries).
When the above research findings were placed before him, Gedar Baap
suggested the following corrections :
FLY : (01) A fly takes the decision to move away within 200 Milliseconds.
(Correction : Gedar Baap challengingly said, it would be 215 Milliseconds).
CHEWING GUM : (04) Chewing gum lessens psychological pressure by 12% to 16%.
(Correction : Gedar Baap says, it would be 11.5% to 19.9%).

When asked about the standard of research works done on FLIES and
CHEWING GUM, Gedar Baap opined "Extremely Poor. And it is natural".
When asked "Why ?" Gedar Baap said, "What do you expect from the
country that constantly keeps the brains engaged in finding out ways
and means of harming other countries ?"
When asked about "Gustav" Gedar Baap nodded and said, "When irritated
I apply Usta on my geda (son). Now USA is getting "Gusta" from the
nature".
"Well, Gustav is an extremely powerful natural hazard. Can human being
do anything against it ?" was my question.
Gedar Baap said "Why not ? Just think, you have a large bowl adjacent
to your country that is partly open to the ocean and that gets heat
from the under-water cracks and volcanoes. Your problem is the vacuum
on the bowl that invites wind, where the wind pushes the water. Isn't
it. "
"Yes, of course when over simplified".
"That indicates your problem is the heat. Did you endeavor to do
anything for it ? Or, (Gedar Baap whispered) your secret wish is to
keep your black brethren in danger ?"
"But what can they do ?"
"In place of studying the behavior of flies, they can ask their
scientists to take up research projects in order to develop the type
of algae, micro-organism, coral etc. which can survive in that water.
In the vast ocean it is even possible that there are many species who
can survive and propagate in that water. So the job will be to collect
and place those in the bowl. Did they ever try that ?"
"Definitely no. Probably flies and chewing gum kept their brains absorbed".
Gedar Baap smiled and said, "Are you happy ?"
I had to say "Yes", because what "More" or "Less" could I expect from
a man, who conducts difficult scientific experiments with a beating
rod ?

[mukto-mona] The real Sarah Palin from Wasilla revealed by a fellow Alaskan

Dear Mukto-mona forum readers:

Please peruse the following prolix write-up to know the real face of Sarah Palin, who was chosen by Republican nominee for President to be his running mate.  She will be heartbeat away from becoming president if John McCain is elected on November 4 election.  The honest truth about her is that she is a total stranger to most Republican politicians.  However, almost everyone in Wasilla knows her very well.  One of the persons from Wasilla, Ms. Anne Kilkenny, knows her pretty well for a long time.  Ms. Kilkenny wrote her opinion about Sarah Palin and circulated that article through her letter, which was widely circulated.  Please read the following article to know Ms. Kilkenny's view about Ms. Palin.  It is quite revealing!  I could not figure out how McCain chose her to be his running mate without a thorough vetting.  Whatever this woman from Wasilla wrote about a fellow Wasillan is widely circulated in the Internet through bits and pieces.  Ms. Kilkenny summed it up elegantly.  It sure will be a good reading especially if you are supporting John McCain-Sarah Palin ticket.

Sincerely,
A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Opinion

The Word From Wasilla

Thu Sep 4, 1:52 PM ET

The Nation -- Everyone is trying to get the measure of Sarah Palin, the woman who was rocketed from small-state obscurity to the national stage when John McCain selected her as his running-mate on the 2008 Republican ticket.

Republican senators and governors are admitting interviews, as former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, did with me a few minutes ago that: "Most of us don't really know her personally."

Well, Anne Kilkenny does know Sarah Palin.

Kilkenny's a good citizen of Wasilla, Alaska, the city where Palin got her political state as a city council member and then mayor. She's a self-described "housewife" who volunteers as a voter registrar, has been active in the PTA and regularly attends local government meetings.

She is, as well, someone who has clashed with Palin. More than a decade ago, when Palin was campaigning to ban books, Kilkenny says, "I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship."

What's Kilkenney's take?

Here's a letter she has circulated

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she's like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe".

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin's kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She's smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative." During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later -- to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs.

She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State's top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he "intimidated" her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit, exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects--which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance--but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as "anti-pork".

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as "AGIA" that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State's lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

[mukto-mona] Research and Scholarship in Madrasas: Some Reflections

Research and Scholarship in Madrasas: Some Reflections

By Maulana Abu Ammar Zahid ul-Rashdi

(Extracted from the author's Urdu book Dini Madaris Ka Nisab-o Nizam [Al-AShariah Academy, Gujranwala, 2007] and edited and translated by Yoginder Sikand)

In order to understand the present state of research and scholarship in
madrasas, it is important to locate them in their historical context. The
present structure of madrasa education in South Asia is a product of
colonial times, when British rule led to the rupture of the traditional
Muslim political, economic, military, legal, administrative and educational
systems. In the wake of this and in response to these new challenges,
numerous ulema devised the present system of madrasa education so as to
protect Islamic culture. These new madrasas were intended to protect the
faith and religious identity of Muslims and to maintain and promote the
tradition of Islamic learning. Their graduates were to keep mosques and
madrasas alive in their capacity as imams, muftis, teachers and preachers.
They were also to combat challenges to Islamic beliefs and culture. Till
now, the madrasas have been operating in this defensive mode as these
challenges and threats are not only still alive but are becoming even more
severe with the passage of time. It is in this context that the status of
scholarship and research in South Asia's madrasas must be understood.

The story has two sides to it. On the positive side, several madrasas now
run dar ul-iftas that supply questioners with fatwas or opinions on a wide
range of issues in order to guide them. Many madrasas and their scholars
have produced an immense corpus of Islamic literature in the form of books
and magazines. A few ulema-run institutions have come up in recent years
that are pursuing research and scholarship on contemporary issues. An
increasing number of ulema are now writing on religious issues for
'mainstream' newspapers. Several graduates of madrasas in South Asia have
gone on to do research in regular universities at home and abroad. And now
several madrasas have their own websites on the Internet which provide
information about these institutions and their schools of thought and guide
readers on religious matters. All this shows that madrasas today are not
unmindful of their responsibilities in the field of scholarship and
research.

But there is another side to the story, or what can be called the negative
side. Prime importance is placed in the on-going research work and
scholarship in madrasas on sectarian understandings and also on allegiance
to key personalities within each school of thought, leaving little space for
other issues. The aim of much of this scholarship seems to be to assert the
claim of superiority of one sect over the others, and this is not done in a
spirit of genuine dialogue, but, rather, in a fiercely polemical fashion,
which often degenerates into ridicule and abuse. Till now madrasas have
refused to benefit from modern methods and styles of research and the work
of international research institutions. This is not only because people in
the madrasas are generally not conversant with foreign languages but also
because of the deeply-ingrained belief that they are intellectually superior
to the rest of the world and, hence, that they do not need to know about,
leave alone benefit from, others.  Madrasas seem to imagine that benefiting
from the intellectual work of others—other Muslim intellectuals, other
Islamic sects and international research institutions—is a negation of their
sense of superiority. This is, in a sense, a reflection of their essentially
defensive attitude.

Even in research on matters concerning Muslim social issues, madrasas
imagine that they must be bound by their sectarian affiliations. Till now
there has been no effort to bring together leaders and ulema of different
Muslim sects to discuss important issues concerning the entire community and
to engage in collective research, reflection and dialogue. There has sadly
been no collective and organized effort to promote and improve the quality
of research and scholarship in the madrasas. This sort of work is left
merely to certain individuals who  might have an interest in doing so, and
their patronage, support and guidance is, likewise, done, if at all, on a
personal basis. The conditions of libraries in most madrasas leave much to
be desired. Most madrasas either have no libraries worth the name, and those
that do have some books lack essential reading and reference material on a
wide range of subjects. The selection of books for madrasa libraries is also
guided by the sectarian affiliation of the madrasas and personal whims.

A range of necessary and vital disciplines essential for proper research,
such as sociology, history, psychology, politics, economics and human
civilizations are not taught in madrasas, and, worse still, their importance
is yet to be appreciated, although these are indispensable if madrasas are
to fulfill their objectives. Another major problem is the teaching of
languages. Leave alone English and other international languages, the
teaching of Arabic in most madrasas is also faulty, limited simply to the
comprehension of certain texts. Even after supposedly studying Arabic for
several years, the vast majority of madrasa students are unable to converse,
deliver a speech or write an article properly in that language. Further,
even Urdu is not taught in the madrasas as a language and no arrangements
are made for students to familiarize students with modern Urdu idiom and the
language and style of contemporary Urdu journalism. Because of this, many
madrasa students and even teachers are not able to even write a two- or
three-page article in Urdu.

In order to remedy the situation, I have some suggestions to make. Firstly,
the strong sense of intellectual superiority that has been constructed like
a high wall behind which madrasa teachers and students live must be
addressed. We have to come out of that environment and face practical
realities and accept the fact that besides us others also live in this world
and that they, too, have intellectual and scholarly abilities. We have the
right to differ from them but we have no right to deny their existence. In
my view, madrasas need to understand and benefit from the scholarship and
research being conducted by national and international Muslim and non-Muslim
research institutions working on issues with which madrasas are concerned
and also from the scholarly work of other Muslim sects and schools of
thought. Madrasa boards, where they exist, must deeply introspect into the
matter and devise steps and plans to promote and improve research and
scholarly pursuits within their institutions.  Furthermore, the leaders of
the madrasas must take serious cognizance of the growing cultural and other
challenges facing the Muslims today that threaten Muslim identity,
institutions, beliefs, practices and faith. This is happening at the global
level, and it is something that madrasas must devote their attention to in
terms of serious research, scholarship and publishing.

Re: [mukto-mona] Atten: Dr Sukhamaya Bain

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49691

1. It is impossible to say now what course history would have taken if the British had not colonized India. It really requires a certain mindset to think that only by being colonized India has survived a potential catastrophe. Is it not pathetic to think that progress would not have been possible without the help of a colonial master? Why do we have to think that fruitful exchanges would not have been possible without a colonial bondage? Why could not a cluster of independent Indian kingdoms be benefitted from Britain? I don't see any reasons to justify the colonial greed.

2. We need to remember that the political situation that prevailed in India before she was colonized was not unique. Europe has also witnessed the similar history of being ruled by many small kingdoms. Small kingdoms combined into larger states and for transition from monarchy to democracy they did not need any colonial power. If they could survive, India would also hopefully survived the downfall that we are anticipating now.

[mukto-mona] Religion, Normal Sex and Evolution

Thank you very much to Ananta Bijoy fro sharing such wonderfully educative links about Taslima Nasrin and Richard Dawkins on Charles Darwin's theory of Evolution.

I am a Humanist, by religion, and I believe only in normal, straight, heterosexual relationship between adult and consenting men and women acting, in accordance with the cultural norms of the society on lives on or is condemned to live.

May be we could start a lively discussion on the topic of "Normal Sexuality"; and then on on "Evolution".  Of course, only the heterosexuals have the evolutionary advantage of living beyond their lives....

Thanks again

Re: [mukto-mona] Proof that the Government of India Practices Casteism

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49674

It is a shame, indeed. India is still very much a backward place in terms of the development of human minds. Most people there are very corrupt and irresponsible, which adds to the centuries old lack-of-civilization there. That is why at least I do not see India being comparable to China, for example, in the next few centuries.

There is a lot of talk, with valid basis, about Islamic fanaticism and terrorism in the world today. I do see too many Muslims to be too backward, too superstitious, too uneducated, too hateful, and too violent.

In our part of the world, the other major religious group, viz, the Hindus, fare better mostly in terms of violence. They are worse than the Muslims in terms of having hatred in their minds.

What bothers me most about West Bengal is that, in spite of being run for quite a few decades by the so-called communists, the caste system is still very much there. I am a pessimist about both West Bengal and India.

[mukto-mona] China has more human rights than US

Some people must be surprised to hear this. But, the facts I am going to provide will help many people rethink about the false and hypocratic claim of the big uncle as a safeguard and protector of human rights over the world. The eight members-activists of RNC(Republican National Convention) face up to seven and a half years prison for the charge of conspiracy to riot against  in furtherance of terrorism. Several journalists were arrested who were covering the protests outside the convention without any provocation unlawfully which is a complete violation of human rights
Police in St. Paul are being accused of continuing to intimidate a group of video makers that traveled to the Twin Cities to document police misconduct during the Republican National Convention. On Saturday, police raided a home where members of the I-Witness Video collective were staying. Members of the group were detained for over two hours. The building's landlord forced the group to move out yesterday after police armed with batons and a battering ram entered their living space for a second time.
Members of I-Witness Video accuse the police of blatant harassment and of using the bogus hostage claim to seek entry to their office.

Lawyers and legal observers from the National Lawyers Guild described what happened. You could read the interview with the members of National Lawyers Guild
