RE: [ALOCHONA] Secularism and Islam

Mr. Islam,

You are lauding Turkman with very objectionable languages. Do you think it is appropriate for you if you are a Human Right advocate? Whose right you are advocating? For general Bangladeshi public or for fanatic islamists? Do you know the difference between the general peaceful muslim public and religion hijacker fanatic islamists? Majority people of Bangladesh are muslim and are peace loving for last about 1000 years. The wahabis, muslim brotherhood, rich Saudis and other oil rich middle eastern amirs have started radicalism in islam. That pollution spilled from middle east to Pakistan and Afghanistan. They recruited quite a number of bangla speaking muslims too. After facing tough situations there, a lot of them are harboring shelters to Bangladesh. A lot of petrodollars are being spent for them by their recruiters. They are definite threat for Bangladesh. They talk about religion, like you do, but work as agents and trying to convert Bangladesh into dark age Khilafat. If you are unaware about this unfortunate situation, please try to find out. However, my request to you that if you want to remain as a human right advocate, you must see all human equally regardless of religion, orientation, culture, color, creed or national origin. If you take side with fanatic islamists, your human right logo will just be in vain.

Thanks,
KR

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Secularism and Islam

It seems Mr. Turkman strikes a zero again. I don't know what's wrong with this man!! He keeps on babbling in his confused state of mind and it seems he is the only one who is up and awake with all that rubbish peep holes that someone can see from fanatic burkhas (un-Islamic) towards open-brandishing sex-shops in Time Square , New York where I need to close my children's eyes. Yes, I agree to some extent to his views of secularism as to state and I agree that is the way a sate should behave. But I am not equally surprised again by his failed dilemma of distorted Islamic view. He belongs to those groups of people who think in Bangladesh there can be no religious Muslim who can hate Jamaat's stand during liberation war and I think he belongs to that invisible people who think Islamic Law means cutting off forehands for stealing when not a single man was subjected to that during the prophet (pbuh)'s time and don't know the reason why!! He talks about women beating. Well what does records say? Where do we see worst atrocities on women?? What does the Bible say when it depicts Eve to have had misled Adam and Quran does not recogise that and confirms that both Adam and Eve were misled together? Somalia or Afghnistan? Well shock for him NO - it is in Angola and USA where Muslims are minorities that women are worst treated. Shock again that by the time I am done with this letter - hundreds of women will be raped by hooligans in those countries as there is no Islamic law. There a fast car and a half naked woman on the bill board says together  - 'Take me for a Test Drive'. Some views may sound nice from afar as being humane but in reality they fail in practice. Want to talk about Human Rights? Well ask Mrr. McCaine under what law did he keep the Bangladeshi girl in violation of our national law about adoption. Dare ask him? Come on I am taunting you Mr. Turkman - the unseen! He took the girl for treatment from the Teresa Orphanage in the name of treatment and decided never to return and now look she stands as a publicity stunt. What steps did your future president take (as a I am sure blind many Americans will selfishly vote for this war-lover) to bridge Briggett with her origin. Well you may say it worked out for her and she is having a good life - I on the other hand have seen hundreds of these children returning to Bangaldesh - ### ed up in head as they cannot find their roots. Islam does not allow this type of adoption at all. Do you know that?? Well sorry I forgot you claim to be a too white (too white to be a Bangladeshi) and too anti-Islamic and too much pro-Western to recongise that.

At least I have a God who talks to me. Does your Bible talk to you apart from Holy Ghost inspiring even Christ to utter a few lines only in the whole Bible? Well Islam still allows you to roam in your ignorance and that is secularism.

Sir,
You are confusing Secularism with Anti Islamism. Your own Moslim Brothers in Canada, USA and Western Europe love Secularism because all it means is that ...

*  State would not impose any religion on citizens,
*  no laws would be made to please one religion or the other,
*  all are free to practice, whichever religion they want,
*  all have Freedom of Speech & Expression and Human Rights of all are protected.

Please explain, why what's good for your brothers abroad and has created a better society than ours is no good for your country?

Why should ...

*  Wife Beatings be allowed?
*  Honor Killings, Female Killings, Female Infanticide, Female Fetal Abortions with the help of Ultra Sound Machine to learn the gender of Pregnancy ahead of time should be allowed?
*  You people be allowed to bomb and kill each other or Non Moslims?
*  You people should be allowed to impose ancient and in some cases out-dated and obsolete Islamic Shriyah on people without their approval?
*  Borqah the Mini Tent be worn by our Women, when we see no practical need of it since we are no more like Bedouin Savages of 7th Century, who used to get turned-on looking at face of a female and used to start raping her?

If you have this problem, you should be sent to Mental Hospital. Why should all of us change just because of you are still a Savage Brain, sir?
If you want to be treated by Shriyah Law Punishments, we would be glad to execute your beheading for rape and murder but you are dreaming that you would be able to impose your Savage Talibani System here. Wake up, this is 21st Century, not 7th ...!
Clock moves forward, not backwards.

Leading a multicultural life does not mean that a Muslim have to be secular.

Prophet Mohammed (sm) was not a secular, his shabi were not secular. Muslim Caliphates after prophet were not secular, how and from where some Muslims tend to be secular we do not understand. Western magnetic induced man and women can have such aqida which is far from Islam.

Secularist people can do all kinds of heinous act not the Islamist. Hitler Mussolini all was secular.

Subject: RE: [ALOCHONA] Re: How Bangladesh should react to increasing influence of Islam

Dear Anis saheb,

I will comply with your request to explain the Qura'anic verse.  Explicating the language of the Qur'an is always a pleasure, and in this case there could an additional reward of exposing the nature of falsehood, i.e., the basic premise of your mischievous piece. But I humbly refuse to engage in any "point by point" argument as per your invitation.

Wa la talbisoo alhaqqa bilbaTili wa taktumoo alhaqqa wa antum t'alamoona [2:42]
And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is).

The verb root 'labasa' or 'cover' gives rise to other words such as 'lebaas' meaning cloth or clothes. So, here, 't-albisoo alhaqqa' meaning 'covering or cloaking the truth' indicates a strong sense of intentionality.  In ...bil baTili ..., 'bi' is a frequently used preposition in Arabic most often translated in English as 'with'. The word 'baTil' can have many nuanced meanings such as 'falsehood', 'illegal' 'unjustified' 'harmful' etc.

The verse, therefore, is more than a simple interdiction against lying.  It captures the act of deceitful men succinctly and cautions against indulging in telling the worst kind lies  -- that which cleverly and intentionally conceals the truth in order to cause unjustified harm. Your article, along with some of the Jamaati-style propaganda, is the best example of what the Qur'an has explicitly forbidden us to do.

Your knowledge of Islam is indeed very poor otherwise you would not have used the word 'Islam' so indicriminately to describe such a variety of things ranging from dishonest political posturing,  political propaganda, misogynistic politics and even the Arabic language of the Qur'an.

To say that almost all Islam-'ponthi' people were against the independence of Bangladesh is one of the most insulting remarks to the sovreignty of Bangladesh,  to the general populace of this populous country, and it is surely one of the most sinful lies one can possibly utter! It is also an unforgivable insult to the religion of Islam in Bangladesh.

The truth is only a handful of crooks were involved in heinous activities during the 1971 War of Liberation intent on preventing the independence from Pakistan. And these crooks only pretended to be Pakistan's collaborators.  They were much worse than that, and unfortunately they are still with us. Any good Muslim, anywhere in the world, would hesitate to call them co-religionists.

Secularism, by the way, is a constitutional issue. It protects the rights of religions especially in a multicultural, multireligious country like Bangladesh.

         Thanks.

         Farida Majid

Dear Ms. Farida Majid,

It seems to me that your e-mail address has been hacked becuase it
looks unusual to me that a secularist like you are quoting from from
Quran. If it is not hacked, then the assumption I made in my article
that influence of Islam is increasing amoung Bangladeshis is true.

I do not know what the verse you mentioned means. My knowledge about
Islam is almost nil. Please give us a translation of it.

I will higly appreciate if you kindly let me know what are the
falsehoods I am trying to spread in my article. It contains 11
points and if you identify the point(s) you have question about, then
I will try to clarify my position.

Regards.

The spread of Hijab is also noticeable. Religion based political
parties are expanding their support base. It has posed a risk for
the country because countries like India are trying to create a
fundamentalist image of Bangladesh and using the rising Islam as a
tool for that. What should we do in this situation? I tried to

[ALOCHONA] Dynasty politics continued

Dynasty politics continued

Is the politics in Bangladesh hard to predict? No its easy. It comprises of veneration of leaders of political dynasties without asking for any accountability. Most leaders of political parties try to grab power to have economic powers and plunder wealth. But yet people queue up to vote for them as if its a morbid society just going with the motion.

TZ
The 1/11 turnover was propagated as an attempt to change the political system. We heard a lot about the war against corruption. Many big shots were detained using the emergency acts. Some were corrupts, some were not; some were guilty of abetting the corruption. The people thought that they will see justice and accountability now. The judiciary, the lawyers got busy and the rules of law were tested. But in the end the caretaker government backed by the military could direct them whichever way they wanted. They tried to introduce reforms in the parties through some dissent leaders which eventually failed. No third force emerged.
These events had some positive sides too. We have heard some breathtaking confessions by Giasuddin Al Mamun here and here and Abdul Jalil and Sheikh

Selim's confessions also implicated some top leaders.
And the negative sides included the much discussed minus two formula to keep the dynasty leaders out of the country. Now what we are seeing is "manage two formula". These jailed politicians are coming out in the open and charges are being suspended. What will be the fate of those corruption charges? Will the people of Bangladesh ever see rule of law prevailing and punishing the corrupts? Only time will tell.

The Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina was released months ago under special arrangement (not directly a bail) for better treatment. Mockery of rule of law persisted in the process.

BNP's senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman (Zia) was released today according to a court order granting his bail in all the 13 cases for better medical treatment. He was arrested one and a half years ago on charges of corruption, including extortion. Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar (BNP) said the release "reflected the rule of law". However, would a common detainee ever have the chance to be released like Sheikh Hasina or Tarique? The rule of law is equal to everyone is a myth.

Why was the government forced to release Tarique Rahman? Reports alleged that he was being tortured and virtually was paralyzed. It is not lawful to torture people on custody and everybody is innocent until proven guilty. So these acts are of course deplorable and Tarique Rahman also deserves better treatment like Sheikh Hasina.
Was he a victim of the unlawful menace his party created? Human Rights Watch reported in 2006:
"The government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in power for the two-and-a-half years covered by the report, has defended RAB killings by saying the victims were 'wanted criminals' or 'top terrors' who died when they resisted arrest or were caught in 'crossfire' between the force and criminal gangs. But a year-long investigation by Human Rights Watch found that many suspects died in RAB custody, either after being tortured or by an extrajudicial execution."
The government was under pressure because of the recent agitations after a rumor that Tarique was seriously injured, where that was only a freak accident in Bathroom.
Today's incidents tell about a bad omen that is embarking in this country. Three BNP leaders were heckled by the waiting crowd in front of P.G. Hospital where Tarique is admitted now.

Barkat Ullah Bulu was being insulted by the pro Khaleda supporters

Ehsanul Haque Milon being heckled

Ehsanul Haque Milon was being insulted

Photos by Rehman Asad
These leaders were accused of showing dissent and being members of the reformer group led by Abdul Mannan. Ehsanul Haque Milon tried to save him by calling a press conference that he was not a part of the reformer group as if they have done capital offense. These attitudes show that those who questioned the dynasty powers will not be let unpunished. They will have their revenge against them for having different opinions in the party. Is this democracy they are practicing?

People will soon forget what Giasuddin Al Mamun told in his confessions about Tarique's corruption:
"Tarique Rahman remained away from business involvements because of his full-time involvement in politics. However, behind the scenes, he would support Mamun in his business and in securing commissions. In exchange, Mamun would provide Tarique with money for his personal expenses. And a large percentage of the money illegally earned by Mamun, using his links with Tarique, sent to Tarique for his personal and political expenses."
Soon there will be propaganda that Tarique Zia's alleged support for militancy was all a lie.
Soon all those who supported a change in the party will be beaten by the hard liners. There will be no difference of opinion, there will be no accountability.

We have seen in Pakistan that PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari (Benazir Bhotto's husband) nicknamed Mr. 10% for his earlier conviction of corruption will be running for presidency soon. Nawaz Sharif is still facing corruption charges. But he will also be a strong candidate.

The recent city corporation elections showed that the charges of corruption is not material to the Bangladeshis. They love dynasty rule and they will do everything to forgive the charges against them without asking much and soon bring them back to power.

[mukto-mona] Sarah Palin won't face the national press anytime soon

Sarah Palin won't face the national press anytime soon

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Like it or not, the rookie Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, won't face the national press anytime soon.  The McCain campaign is making sure that press reporters will not have a chance to interview the number two person in the Republican ticket lest she expose her benightedness vis-à-vis world events, national issues, and other whole slues of issues confronting the lower forty-eight states.

The vetting of Sarah Palin was only done by Senator McCain himself.  Since she is a political newbie, many Republican lawmakers in Washington hardly know her.  Had she been a seasoned politician, the press would have known her by now.  The issues that are close to her heart would also be known to national press by now.  But that is not to be the case.  To get a glimpse of her persona, the members of the national press have sent their reporters all the way to Alaska.  Since not much news about her is forthcoming from McCain campaign, the reporters are interviewing people in Wasilla – a town of 6,500 people where Ms. Palin was the mayor for consecutive two terms.  The Internet is also abuzz with blogs on Sarah Palin.  All kinds of news, views, etc., are circulating in the cyberspace of which some are sympathetic to the "hockey mom," but there are quite a few negative write-ups on her.

Senator McCain had vetted her before selecting the one-time beauty queen, ex-mayor of a small town, and the present governor of Alaska.  But she was not vetted by the members of national press nor was she vetted by others who belong to the Republican Party.  I read in one of the news reports that Senator Trent Lott, an elderly Republican lawmaker from Mississippi, quipped that he hardly knew her.  It is thus fair to say that she is not well known to other Republican lawmakers.   Naturally, there are many things that are not known about her than what is trickling down the wire services.

The election is hardly less than two months away from now (September 6, 2008) while the American voters still have no clues who this person Sarah Palin is.  Yes, she gave a fine speech at the convention in St. Paul, Minnesota to unify the Republican base.  Senator McCain was never been a darling of the diehard conservatives; therefore, to appease the bible-thumping Republicans McCain had to zoom into someone as his running mate who would energize the Republican "base" and he found one in Sarah Palin.

After the St. Paul convention, Ms. Palin is yet to sit down for or even schedule an issues-oriented interview with any newspaper, magazine or television network.  To add insult to injury, the McCain campaign has drastically scaled back the access of the national press he used to jokingly refer to as his "base" to his running mate.  In the meantime several speakers, including Sarah Palin took potshots at the media in their speeches at last week's Republican convention.  The McCain campaign and the senator's surrogates now openly say that the "liberal media" is favoring Obama-Biden ticket.

Only 3 days before the commencement of the Republican Convention in St. Paul, on August 29 Sarah Palin was flown from Anchorage, Alaska to Dayton, Ohio where she was debuted to national politics.  Since then the McCain campaign has been receiving about 80-100 requests a day from news organizations allover the world, as per McCain spokesperson, Mr. Ben Porritt.

Judging from the way the McCain campaign is warding off reporters from Sarah Palin, quite a few media pundits hold the view that they (McCain campaign) would like to run out on the clock on this.  In other words, Ms. Palin won't take questions from news reporters in an unmoderated press interviews.  Others think that Sarah Palin is going through a crash course in both national and international affairs at this time.  The McCain campaign would love to unleash her but they think she is not ready yet to face the press.

On October 2, 2008 there will be a VP debate, which will be nationally televised.  Therefore, the McCain campaign would like to expose Ms. Palin to press as a prelude to the VP debate.  But before that could happen, the McCain campaign will not allow any national reporter worth his or her salt to throw any question.  And that is a sure thing.

In the meantime Sarah Palin has a ubiquitous presence in the media.  To keep the news hungry folks keep guessing about Ms. Palin's prowess in handling reporters' question, some networks are running documentaries on her.  Also, 'People' magazine was allowed to shoot photographs of the newly minted VP candidate in the aftermath of the St. Paul convention by the McCain campaign.  Therefore, there is no shortage of photos, headlines, reports of the Republican VP candidate.  As a one-time beauty queen she still is photogenic at 44.  Perhaps Senator McCain at 72 needs her to show youthful exuberance of the Republican ticket!

Going back to the seminal issue of whether Sarah Palin would face the hostile 'liberal media," many are asking what would be her answer if reporters ask her a question or two on Pakistan, Georgia, Iran, Afghanistan.  What would be her answer to questions relating to inflation, meltdown in the Wall Street, rise in national unemployment rate, the curse of subprime lending?

The morality issue may come in Sarah Palin's interview with the press.  Her eldest child was born before eight months could elapse after her formal wedding.  Was her child premature or did she conceive her child before her wedding?  Also, her eldest daughter, Bristol, who is 17 years old, is an unwed mother.  She is an avid advocate of book banning.  Is she for free press?  Does she favor banning of books at local library?  On what ground does she favor banning of certain books.

Sarah Palin is a church-going and bible-thumping Christian who believes that Americans involvement in Iraq War was the will of god.  She also said the same thing about Alaskan pipeline.  The newspaper reporters would certainly have a field day with her if the McCain allow her to face the reporters.

In summary, the vetting of Sarah Palin in public media has yet to take place.  Senator McCain and his campaign may have vetted her already the public would like to know where she stands on myriads of issues.  Many people therefore expect that the McCain campaign would allow her to answer questions from the press.  The public vetting must start now because there is only less than two months left before voters would cast their vote.  The sooner it happens, the better it is for America.  After all, Sarah Palin will be heartbeat away from becoming the president if McCain comes out victorious on November 4 election.

RE: [mukto-mona] Re: Atten: Dr Sukhamaya Bain

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49742

Dear Chakraborty Dada,

We perhaps need a trikaldorshi person to tell us what would
have happened to India
if Prithiviraj chauhan was not defeated by the Muslim invaders in the battle of
Tarain in 1192. It's impossible to imagine precisely what time had in its
store. From the historical perspective we can vaguely say that if there was no
foreign invasion India
would remain a fractured land ruled by many kings and nobles, its march towards
the modern age would have been slow, democracy would have taken much more time
to usher and the present artery of the railways may not have been here now. From
the intellectual point of view many of our thinkers, social reformers or
politicians or great literary geniuses would not have been here too. Gautama
Buddha and Shankarachariya would have been the last great persons to be
reckoned with but Ghalib, Tagore and Gandhi would not have been here in the way
as we know them now. From the political perspective India
as a united nation as we see it today would have needed a towering personality
to unify this fractured land.

There is no doubt that India's
serenity was greatly disturbed by the Muslim invasion. India
had, and still has in a much smaller form, a dreaded cast system but Islam's
principles of fraternity and equality did very little to help it. On the other
hand the conversions of the natives to Islam did brought variety but its
overall effect was negative. The political fall out of the Muslim rule in India
was the division of India
in 1947. The politics of hatred and its culmination into a bloody finale does
not make us very happy.

The British rule in India
which started in Bengal in 1757 was brutal but it gave
us the sense of nationalism which was hitherto unknown to us. They brought this
vast land into one centralised rule which brought us together and helped us to
discover a unity in diversity. The enlightenment we enjoy today was a direct
result of the colonial rule which opened the bridge between the east and west.

Akbar Hussain

Dear readers, these are not the 1st time such news about Falu-Khaleda "illegal" relationship.

A continuous news paper report about this Falu-Khaleda "special & intimate" relationship was also published in a national daily in Dhaka during the caretaker government of 1996. Then neither Khaleda-Falu nor BNP protested about that news.

Falu-Khaleda "illegal" relationship is known to BNP circle too.

So, we whole heartedly condemn both Falu & Khaleda.

Sukhamaya

When you support the view that all the Indians would have converted to Islam and that that would be possible just in about 200 years (1757- ), are you not referring to a demographic catastrophe that could happen if the British "rescuers" were not here? Demography is continually changing. But it is the colonial master who arrested it's most devastating form! That is really hard to believe!

There is no denying the fact that British helped the Indians with many reforms. But the initiatives had to come from the Indian themselves. India has witnessed many reforms movement before the arrival of the British. An example is fifteenth century movement by Chaitanya Deb.

Indian societies have many weaknesses. It has many strengths too. My point was that fruitful exchanges are possible and probably more effective if the exchanging partners are on equal footing. I believe a master-servant relationship is not desirable. Particularly this is not desirable at all when it comes to India which has a highly respectable cultural heritage.

India in general has been very argumentative throughout history. There has always been opposing currents of views and thoughts. Some ancient sages have said that it is only the Brahmans who can have access to the Vedas. Dwaipayan Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata (written about 2500 years ago), did not agree to that. According to him, "Nothing is above man." India had Charvaks. India saw Kings like Asoka and Akbar.

What I want to say is this: it is highly probable that India would not have done worse than what it has done now after British intervention. But Indians definitely would have needed to be enlightened by the new light that Europe brought for itself from which rest of the world also benefited. I emphasize again: that enlightenment would be possible (even would be better)  without being colonized.

N.B. British stole all the gold from the Tajmahal and then put the entire complex to auction for selling the valuable stone. This is just one of the notorious things that British did as a colonial master.

Re: [mukto-mona] Atten: Dr Sukhamaya Bain

We don't have to look our left and right to criticise the British, but we do not dare to use a single word against the Mughals because that may hurt the feetings/sentiment of our neighbors, friends, bosses, subordinates. Besideds wiping out thousands of temples, converting left and right, deshaping the demography and culture, the Mughals at the its final stage introduced residency taxes (zizzia) onto the original inhabitants of the land.

British, however, did some positive contribution to India. It brought the international language, English and the modern education system to India.. It is because of the British, India got the world class mass communication system, largest rail communication in the world.  Had India not invaded by British, who knows, India could have been divided into 50 countries each one with economy and quality of lives as in Afghanitan and elsewhere now.

I appreciate Dr. Bain for his courage to speak out.

[mukto-mona] Hudson's Maneeza Hossain and Pakistani Ambassador to USA in a panel discussion

Dear All:

The following is the video link to Hudson Institute seminar on January 11, 2008. The topic was Hudson senior fellow Maneeza Hossain's book "Broken Pendulum: Banglaadesh's Swing to Radicalism". The two panelists were the author herself and Husain Haqqani. Mr Haqqani at the time was Co-Chair of the Hudson Institute's Project on the Future of the Muslim World as well as editor of the journal 'Current Trends in Islamist Thought' published from Washington DC. His book "Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military" reveals the depth of links between the Pakistani military and Islamists, while detailing the risks of this unholy alliance for the United States.
Mr. Husain Haqqani is currently the Pakistani Ambassador to USA. In this video you will see his apprehension about the possible "Pakistanization" of Bangladesh.

[mukto-mona] Sahara Forest Project Has Immense Implications for South Asian Countries

As someone who was born in a perennially water-starved state in SOuth
India, I grew up with constant battles between the governments of
Tamilnadu, Andhra and Karnataka over Cauvery water for irrigating
crops in these three states. Consequently, Northern Tamilnadu and
SOuthern Andhra Pradesh which are close to the sea are effectively
becoming deserts from an agricultural viewpoint causing tremendous
social upheaval as hundreds of thousands of poor people in these
otherwise wealthy states are forced to leave their land and migrate
to the cities to work at menial jobs. Andhra also has the highest
rate of farmer suicides in the world. SOme years ago, the newspapers
used to write about farmer suicides. They have now become so common
that no one bothers. Admittedly, there are many reasons for this but
the fact is that Rayalaseema District in Andhra Pradesh and North and
South Arcot in Tamilnadu among many others are severely starved of
water.

This article on Treehugger on a proposal to reforest the Sahara
Desert and use it to generate power as well as reverse its
desertification is an extremely interesting one with positive
possibilities for all of South Asia:
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/09/sahara-forest-project.php The
huge agricultural economies of the region could do very well if this
were implemented on a large scale.

Will it happen? I am not an optimist as far as the region is
concerned.

[ALOCHONA] If that happens, we are in for a long hot summer.

The caretaker government has failed us
The regime is now in a state of panic and utter confusion and is frantically looking for an exit strategy. However, the fear is that in its utmost state of frustration, it might consider handing over the reins of the government to yet another element of extra-constitutional authority. If that happens, we are in for a long hot summer,
writes Shamsher Chowdhury

The Awami League failed us, so did the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the flamboyant regime of General Hussein Mohammed Ershad. Every regime cried wolf in the name of democracy. I often wonder with so many proclaimed champions of democracy in this country, why democracy remains as elusive as ever.
Without exception, the hallmark of all these parties which once ruled this country has been the indulgence in lies and deception. All of them promised us the moon but failed to ensure even the very basics for the vast majority of this country's population. It has become nearly impossible to trust anyone in this country, particularly those who occupy the seat of power. Even the best get drunk with the elixir of power soon after assuming the seat of power and almost immediately embarks upon trying to figure out how to stay in the seat of power forever.
While such scenarios continue to repeat themselves, the simple villagers, the day labourers, the deprived and the distressed continue to suffer year after year. All that is left for them to do is to pray and repose their absolute trust and faith in the creator.
Look at the much professed and glorified caretaker government. The holy month of Ramadan is here. Everybody promised tight control over unbridled rise of prices. Even the apex body of trade and commerce and no less than its president promised that there would be no undue hiking of prices during this Ramadan. Well, morning shows the day. If anything, the prices have gone up. In a statement expressing his frustration over the matter, the president of the apex body is now proposing that members of law enforcing agencies be deployed to monitor and control retailers at the market places. As far as I remember, similar attempts were also undertaken on earlier occasions but they did not succeed. It will not succeed this time.
Also, I have always felt very uncomfortable about the Bangladesh Rifles' sale of essentials at subsidized prices from the very day it began. The BDR is neither a trading house nor meant to be one and hence this venture cannot be sustainable. Surely this additional task is bound to create undue pressures affecting its regular work. This, among other things, sets a bad precedence.
Human Rights Watch, the New York-based and internationally reputed human rights group, has reported that at least 50 people were killed by the Rapid Action Battalion and the police just in the last two months. Brad Adams, the Asia director of the group, went on to say that there was enough evidence to suggest that these were nothing but extra-judicial killings. And now, the regime has set up a so-called 'independent' Human Rights Commission only to work at the behest of the government, a commission that is perceivably designed to ultimately legitimise and cover up abuses committed rather than ensure that justice is meted out.
I knew from day one that the Anti-Corruption Commission's drive against corruption could not be sustained. As a matter of fact, on the very subject I wrote an article titles 'Tackling corruption the sustainable way' in this very daily published in early March of this year. Hence, I am not a least bit surprised about the high profiled corruption suspects now being released on bail one after the other. Frankly, in this regard the ACC alone is to blame.
This regime, since its inception, has promulgated as many as 79 ordinances (new and revised), apparently aimed at 'ensuring transparency and accountability and reduce public suffering'. The question is, has the public suffering been reduced? Unfortunately, there has only been further complication of problems and the people's suffering has been on the rise. On the other hand, of the 79 ordinances promulgated, many of them have given rise to further controversies. How can ordinances conceived by a handful of bureaucrats and people who have had no previous experience in governance be effective and have any impact whatsoever on the people at large?
The regime is now in a state of panic and utter confusion and is frantically looking for an exit strategy. However, the fear is that in its utmost state of frustration, it might consider handing over the reins of the government to yet another element of extra-constitutional authority. If that happens, we are in for a long hot summer.
