[mukto-mona] Obama regained the frontrunner status in the aftermath of financial crisis

The financial crisis in Wall Street helped Obama to regain the frontrunner status

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Oh, what a turbulent week it was in the Wall Street.  The third week of September 2008 will surely go down in the annals of history of American finance when the threat of an impending meltdown had spooked the financial world, globally.  Not only did the U.S. market had plummeted, the rest of the world also caught the contagion resulting in heavy loses.

Is the market bottoming out?  Only time will tell.  The market meltdown, however, had helped the candidacy of Democratic ticket of Obama-Biden.  The sore loser of course was Republican ticket of "Palin-McCain."  Sorry for the intended mistake.  It should be 'McCain-Palin' ticket but in a political rally, the super enthusiastic VP candidate, Governor Sarah Palin, put her name first in a stump speech, which brought laughter in few commentators.  Ms. Palin, who is a newcomer to national politics, is yet to learn how to deliver effective speech without making political faux pas.

The Obama campaign must be on cloud nine today (September 18, 2008) when Senator McCain not only flip-flopped his position on government-led regulation of financial institutions but he also suggested in a political speech that George Bush should fire the chief of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the governing body of the U.S. financial institutions.  However, unbeknownst to Senator McCain, the U.S. president has no power to fire the SEC chief; the president can only appoint one.  A seasoned senator such as McCain is yet to know this for a fact!

For the last 6-7 years, a boom in housing market propelled the U.S. financial market to a higher level.  Mr. Bush is the champion of building an "ownership society" in America.  To help build that society, Dr. Alan Greenspan, the ex-chairman of Federal Reserve Bank kept the interest rate way too low.  Thus, the financing cost of loans being too low, a boom in housing market ensued.

However, all good things must come to an end.  So did the housing market.  In the process, the lending organizations became too greedy; they granted loans to people who could not have afforded to borrow money to buy real-estate.  This predatory practice of loaning money to low income people for real-estate purchase is called "sub-prime" lending.  When the economy started heading south, many borrowers of the sub-prime lending defaulted on the loan.  Consequently, the lenders started repossessing the houses, which the banks could not either sell or when the sold the houses they incurred a heavy loss.

In the last few years as housing bubble was developing in America, the financial world came up with many exotic products such as "Mortgage-Backed Securities," "Credit Default Swap," and few derivatives.  The big banks were securitizing the worthless mortgage portfolio whose values were going down day after day and month after month.  Thus, we have seen quite a few Wall Street bankers such as Bear Stearns being bailed out by the U.S. government in March 2008.

The Bush Administration however did not bailout another Wall Street investment by the name Lehman Brothers perhaps because the fallout of this bank won't adversely affect the financial world.  This week, when the insurance giant, AIG, was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, the Bush Administration decided to bailout the giant company for the fear that the fallout from the insurer's demise may create a panic, globally.  To ease liquidity, the Federal Reserve Bank pumped money into the banking system.  September 15 through 19, 2008 was a trying time in the Wall Street.  As AIG's trouble came into the fore, there was a fire sale going in the share market allover the world.  The Bush Administration had to do something to stop the bleeding.

As this high drama was going on in Washington DC, both Senator McCain and Senator Obama were campaigning in the battleground states, which will decide who occupies the White House in 2009.  Senator Obama was pointing out that a lack of regulation and government oversight have brought the disastrous results leading up to the collapse of financial world in America.  To remedy the problem, he had been recommending for more regulation.  However, Senator McCain held the view that government should not get into the act of regulation.  His view matched with that of Republican Party, which is the champion of less regulation.

McCain was quick to blame the greediness of the financial managers that is so prevalent in the Wall Street.  He wrongly said on September 17 in the morning that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." Democratic lawmakers including Barack Obama called him out of touch and just like Bush.  In a matter of hours McCain reversed his opinion to say that there is a crisis at hand in the financial world and he squarely blamed the chief of SEC.

A week ago, the McCain campaign was elated knowing that their candidate was the frontrunner as per quite a few opinion polls.  In fact, McCain was leading by 5 percentage points.  Some pundits said that it is normal for the Republican ticket to enjoy a bounce in the opinion pall in the aftermath of a successful convention.  Also, American electorates were fascinated by the charm of McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.  She is the darling of America's conservative and Bible-thumping voters.

However, the honeymoon period of Sarah Palin did not last long.  The media in America started to question Palin's "experience" in foreign affairs.  To make matters worse, she overstated her experiences, which were correctly pointed out by the press.  Thus, the ephemeral bounce in the opinion poll for McCain-Palin ticket had all but evaporated.

The real winner from the financial debacle was Senator Obama. Time and time again, the pocketbook issue dominates the presidential election.  An overwhelming majority is saying that they are worse off now than four years ago. Therefore, if the economy is in such a bad shape as it is now and a recession looms large, 45 days from now when the voters head to the polling place, they will vote for the candidate who they think is a better stewardship of the economy.  All the polls so far indicate that the voters trust Democrats to be better manager of economy.  Thus, a sea change in public opinion is about to happen on November 4, 2008.

In summary, Senator Obama has every reason to be happy because there is an underpinning for his candidacy from independent voters who decide the fate of the election.  If Obama campaign could maintain the lead in the public opinion poll, the Democratic ticket should be able to come out as the winner.  From my perspective, all indications are there for McCain's defeat.  Privately, many Republicans have also written off this election.  The world has to just wait about six more weeks to learn about the final result.  It is often said that morning shows the day.  The Democrats could almost smell the sweet scent of the victory at long last!

[ALOCHONA] 3 varsity teachers among 11 militants held

3 varsity teachers among 11 militants held

Twelve Hijbut Tahrir activists, three of whom are
university teachers, have been arrested in front of Rajshahi
City press club on the eve of holding a press conference
yesterday. Focus Bangla

Police arrested 11 Hijbut Tahrir activists at Sonadighi crossing in the Rajshahi northwestern city yesterday on the eve of their pre-announced press conference.

Among the arrested ones there are three university teachers. The three arrested teachers are Prof. Dr Syed Golam Mawla of Management Department and Prof. Ahmed Jamal of Chemistry Department of Dhaka University and Mamun Ansari of the private Southern University in Dhaka.

Police said they arrested the Tahrir men as "suspected militants" after they reached Rajshahi by a microbus to hold the press conference at the local Press Club at 1pm for announcing programme of the party. They were detained around 12:30pm on Thursday at Rajshahi Press Club.

The others held are believed to be students of different universities in the country. They are Masud Kawser, son of Shafiqul Islam of Chandpur district, Omar Farook, son of Sadiqul Islam of Chapainawabganj, Moniruzzaman Masud, son of Harunur Rashid of Noakhali, Saddam Hossain, son of Mohammad Hossain, and Mozammel Haque, son of Shamsul Islam, of Brahmanbaria, Akhtar Hossain, son of Ali Hossain of Chittagong, Jahedul Islam, son of Aftab Uddin of Kishoreganj, and their microbus driver Jahangir Alam, son of Abdur Rahman of Noakhali district.

Police also seized the microbus carrying them, 12 mobile-phone sets and huge leaflets and posters of the party from the possession of the Tahrir activists.

This group's abortive debut here came as a major matter after the JMB militants' march through this city at the height of their vigilance operation in the district and their eventual nemesis.

Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Detective Branch Ekramul Hossain said the university teachers and others were arrested as "suspected militants" in apprehension of their "subversive acts".

Carrying leaflets with anti-government statements in violation of the state of emergency was also cited as a ground for taking them in.Arrested DU teacher Golam Mawla said they convened a press conference

at Rajshahi City Press Club a day before the party's central press conference at the Engineers' Institute Auditorium in Dhaka. The DU teacher also named Mohiuddin Ahmed as their party's central leader.

Prior to arranging the press conference, the party activists distributed leaflets in the city-heart Saheb Bazaar area after Tarabi prayers on Sept 9. The party leaflets also carried anti-government

slogans.

The party undertook steps to spread and propagate its activities by holding the press conference in Rajshahi for the first time, sources said. But police forestalled the move.

In the leaflets the group also urged the Muslim Ummah to unite during the holy month of Ramadan and "regain the lost glory". They also made a call for what they said "toppling the government for restoration of Khilafat (caliphate)".

Especially, Rajshahi's Bagmara area was a stronghold of Islamic militants under JMJB, the operations wing of JMB, and Sarbahara outlaws in the last few years.

Back then, JMB's second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai had launched a cleansing operation in 2004 against the outlaws in a bid to eliminate them. After the deadly drive, the terrorist activities were somehow under control.

Bangla Bhai and JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman and four other leaders were hanged in two judges' killing cases of Jhalakati last year.

[ALOCHONA] The begums are back

The begums are back

Back to square one as the army admits defeat

Sep 18th 2008    The Economist print edition
AFP Zia, free at last, and back in the battle

IT IS a spectacular military retreat. "You can smell the burning tyres," says one Dhaka-based diplomat. Since the army seized power in January 2007 and installed a technocratic interim government, it has tried and failed to end an era of dominance by Bangladesh's two squabbling former prime minsters, Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Sheikh Hasina Wajed of the Awami League..

Yet, after a year in jail on charges of corruption, Bangladesh's battling begums are back. On September 11th the government freed Mrs Zia on bail. Five days later, it cleared legal hurdles for the return of Sheikh Hasina from America, where she went for medical treatment following her release on parole in June. She is expected back in Bangladesh early next month.

Both leaders still face charges. But prosecutors are unlikely to take action against them without the approval of the government, which is no longer trying to bring their political careers to an end. So, barring an extraordinary upset, one of them will be Bangladesh's next prime minister.

It is an astonishing volte-face. The begums alternated in power from 1991-2007 and are blamed for the fiercely antagonistic, corrupt politics that led the army to step in. First it tried to exile them and create a "third force" in Bangladeshi politics; then it jailed them and tried to split their parties, hoping that new leaders might emerge. But the begums' parties are held together by two things: patronage and personality cult. They are unviable without their leaders: hence the BNP's offer to Mrs Zia this week to lead the party "for life". She declined.
The good news is that Bangladeshis, for the first time since 2001, will get the chance to elect a government. For once it will be almost impossible to rig the poll. The election commission has purged 12m duplicate, deceased or otherwise bogus names from voter rolls. On September 22nd it will unveil a firm date for the election, long promised for December. And the government is soon to announce steps to lift the 20-month old state of emergency.
It is troubling, however, that Bangladesh's transition to multiparty democracy has in effect been entrusted to the two politicians who made it unworkable in the first place.. They have refused to talk to each other for decades, though the government says it is working on getting them to "sit across the table".
The price the government had to pay to prevent the parties boycotting the polls is the return of total impunity to Bangladesh. For five years from 2001, Bangladesh led international corruption rankings.

But this month the government freed Mrs Zia's son, Tarique Rahman, the main trophy of its anti-corruption drive. The begums' coteries have been released on bail. It seems likely that the convictions of those jailed for corruption will be overturned.

Some in Dhaka worry that all of this might be too much for the generals to stomach. The army still has to secure its own safe passage into the multiparty era, but has little clout over the resurgent political parties. The two years Western governments quietly granted it to fix the country's messy politics are drawing to a close. Neither foreign governments nor Bangladeshis want to see its rule extended.

But there are hints that the generals might not leave politics altogether. A banned Islamist militant group, the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, which the army previously claimed to have crushed, is reported to have threatened members of the emergency government. This week the home ministry gave warning of worsening law and order. The general's retreat seems inevitable, but such scares suggest it might not be total.

[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh: The first victim of climate change crisis

Bangladesh: The first victim of climate change crisis

Iftekhar Iqbal

The UK-Bangladesh climate conference (London, 10 September 2008) has been a success at least on two counts: establishing Bangladesh's vulnerability to climate change and supporting its quest for financial assistance from international community to meeting the challenge. Attended by hundreds of members of GOs, NOGs and the civil society from Bangladesh, UK and across the European Union the conference reiterated the prevailing scientific prediction that at least 8 per cent of Bangladesh will be submerged under sea water by 2050 and that extreme weather condition will continue to wreak havoc in the national economy and human security.

In response, Bangladesh government formed an initial seed fund of $45m and UK government commits $132m, to be followed by more from the Netherlands, Denmark and the World Bank. The collection, to be known as Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF), is a significant starting point towards securing about $4 billion in the course of next fifteen years. Most of the fund is expected to gear up a series of programmes of 'adaptation' to the impact of climate change. These are all very simple equation: a poor, environmentally vulnerable country like Bangladesh shows commitment and determination to fight climate change and the international community responds positively. Yet, between the climatic science and dynamics of foreign aid, there are a few issues that demands serious attention.

First, the agreement has taken place between the UK government and a caretaker government in Bangladesh whose legitimacy is in doubt. In the context of the UK and European Union's continued pressure on this government to hold elections by December this year, the agreement seems to have been made in surprising haste and undue alacrity. The agreement will remain a bone of contention and will surely lead to protest and instability to be faced by the incumbent government.

Secondly, the entire proceedings of speeches, dialogues, recitation from creative writings, documentary shows and display of flyers and leaflets, there were no mention of the fact that despite its obvious risk to climate change, Bangladesh is, at the same time, one of the few counties in the world where a dynamic geological process of land-formation is going on in the coastal region, as reported by an environmental agency of Bangladesh government itself on the basis of satellite data. The failure to bring this issue in the conference leaves Bangladesh prone to a defensive 'adaptation' programme, although the given geological system in the region provides option for an aggressive scientific measure to enhance the natural process of the formation of new land mass, similar successful experiments having been taken up in the Netherlands.

Thirdly, the economics of the agreement is not clear. It is stated that the assistance comes in the form of a grant. It is not clear if the grant status applies to the rest of the projected amount of $4b. It is reported that the fund under MDTF will be under investment and interest accruing from it will be enough to sustain the continuous cost of adaptation in Bangladesh. This raises the question of where and with which financial institutions will the fund be invested? Is the total interest gain meant for use in Bangladesh? If not, where? There are also romanticised rumours that the fund offered by the UK is nothing but an example of pure compensation for the injustice caused to low-emitting countries like Bangladesh by high-emitting countries like the UK. If this is the case, a more reasonable option could be to have substantial debt relief for Bangladesh, which pay more than $1b in debt repayment to donors each year, rather than asking Bangladesh to set aside $45m from tax-payer's money. This is also a misnomer of compensation when no measurement of damage is yet comprehensively calculated. A further concern is that, as the Finance Adviser assured the delegates, the MDTF would be a 'window' for the NGOs and Civil Society so that they can access the fund 'direct', meaning an unfathomable chaos of multiple institutional interest and overlapping of activities.

Fourth, the proposed adaptation plan (Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (CCSAP) that the MDTF wants to carry out sounds alarming from an ecological perspective. The CCSAP seems to take major environmental, social and economic problems such as flood, drought, erosion and salinity or insecurity for human life and livelihood and above all poverty within the single package of climate change. It is assumed that all these problems will be solved if Bangladesh is 'climate-proofed'. This is preposterous.

The CCSAP tend to ignore the earth-bound specificity of some of the major environmental problems. For instance, draught in northern Bangladesh, which is now known as Monga-prone area, was common as early as Emperor Ashok's time 2000 years ago; water-logging rather than flood which is the key problem in Bangladesh today and the problem is increased by enormous extent of embankment from colonial times till date and the CCSAP proposes to build more ecologically unsustainable construction of bridges over meandering deltaic rivers with strong currents have led to siltation at some points and erosion; salinity in the coastal region is taking place because of sluggish current of sea-bound rivers due to erection of numerous bunds upstream within Indian territory and these enable seawater to overpower incoming sweetwater.

In Bangladesh, problems of livelihood and poverty are direct result of unequal access to existing resources and legal and administrative incapacity to ensure social justice than the melting ice of the Himalayas. If existing land in Bangladesh (even excluding the 8 per cent Bangladesh is going to 'surely' lose) is meaningfully reformed and already raised new landmass (including chars or river islets) are properly distributed among the landless and the land-poor, a lot of pressing social problems may be addressed.

Once put these issues in proper perspective, Bangladesh can take closer action on its mainstream development programmes while giving considered attention to the problem of climate change.

Sixthly, another alarming issue arising from taking this 'holistic' approach to climate change is the very destructive message it can send to democratic polity and governance.

Last but not least, British PM Gordon Brown in his video message to the conference hailed Bangladesh as 'world leader in climate change adaptation'. The host side has so generously depicted Bangladesh to be so throughout the conference. While this must be taken as a compliment, there is hardly anything to be complacent about it. Bangladesh is drawn into the driving seat which means it has also the responsibility to join together other developing countries by setting an 'example' of forming a global fund whose financial mechanism is not clearly charted. This is not to undermine potential lead position of Bangladesh in global context, but neither could anyone deny that debt is rising faster than the climate change and making Bangladesh a 'leader' in 'adaptation' campaign means most poor vulnerable countries would be persuaded to follow its lead in hazy climate deals-a responsibility Bangladesh can barely afford to take. In fact this agreement directly contradicts the collective goals of G77 and other poor countries in ensuring global climatic justice. Besides, Bangladesh is a country with little record of putting its own house in order through pragmatic and formative leadership so far; and yet given the task of leading the environmentally vulnerable world sounds a bit too ambitious.

In Bangladesh, there is a National Environmental Policy (NEP) and the new CCSAP must work within the framework of NEP which has a larger vision of the more immediate earth-bound environmental issues and of multiple local stake-holders, although it remains subject to further deliberations in the wake of challenges of climate change. International community, donors and well-wishers of Bangladesh must look beyond 'climate-proofing' Bangladesh and take a broader view of the situation. There is hardly any doubt that climate change is happening, but there are folks out there who are not yet ready to give up to the teleology of a doomsday predicted exclusively for Bangladesh.

Re: [mukto-mona] Manufacturing 'Terrorists' The Indian Way

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49880

This type of article cannot be helpful. This is just shifting the blame from one side to the other. If I throw a stone into a bee-hive, the bees will come after me. Now, who do I blame for my stings? Should I blame bees or myself?

There are always two sides of a story. The people in the media and the so called journalists should show both sides in analyzing the truth. Today's media and journalists are biased, and cannot be trusted. That is one of the reasons why we have not been able to get rid of terrorism in the world. Hindutvabadis, probably, can be blamed for some of these activities, but we need to know if they are the bees, just responding to the incitement, or not. If they are instigators, they should be held accountable. The problem that I have is, I cannot simply blame Hindutvabadis for terrorism elsewhere in the world. Can you?

It does not matter which religion do these terrorists belong to, they are terrorists, and should not be harbored or protected. The responsible people should be truthful to their conviction for the truth, and news should be presented in an unbiased manner. Biased reporting, like this, is not helpful. It will only linger the problem of terrorism by inciting one side or the other.

[mukto-mona] Hindutva's Violent History

                                  Hindutva's Violent History

ANGANA CHATTERJI
Anthropologist

HINDUTVA'S PRODUCTION of culture and nation is often marked by savagery. On 23 August 2008, Lakshmanananda Saraswati, Orissa's Hindu nationalist icon, was murdered with four disciples in Jalespeta in Kandhamal district. State authorities alleged the attackers to be Maoists (and a group has subsequently claimed the murder). But the Sangh Parviar held the Christian community responsible, even though there is no evidence or history to suggest the armed mobilisation of Christian groups in Orissa.

After the murder, the All India Christian Council stated: "The Christian community in India abhors violence, condemns all acts of terrorism, and opposes groups of people taking the law into their own hands". Gouri Prasad Rath, General Secretary, VHPOrissa, stated: "Christians have killed Swamiji. We will give a befitting reply. We would be forced to opt for violent protests if action is not taken against the killers".

Following which, violence engulfed the district. Churches and Christian houses razed to the ground, frightened Christians hiding in the jungles or in relief camps. Officials record the death toll at 13, local leaders at 20, while the Asian Centre for Human Rights noted 50.

The Sangh's history in postcolonial Orissa is long and violent. Virulent Hindutva campaigns against minority groups reverberated in Rourkela in 1964, Cuttack in 1968 and 1992, Bhadrak in 1986 and 1991, Soro in 1991. The Kandhamal riots were not unforeseen.

Since 2000, the Sangh has been strengthened by the Bharatiya Janata Party's coalition government with the Biju Janata Dal. In October 2002, a Shiv Sena unit in Balasore district declared the formation of the first Hindu 'suicide squad'. In March 2006, Rath stated that the "VHP believes that the security measures initiated by the Government [for protection of Hindus] are not adequate and hence Hindu society has taken the responsibility for it."

The VHP has 1,25,000 primary workers in Orissa. The RSS operates 6,000 shakhas with a 1,50,000 plus cadre. The Bajrang Dal has 50,000 activists working in 200 akharas. BJP workers number above 4,50,000. BJP Mohila Morcha, Durga Vahini (7,000 outfits in 117 sites), and Rashtriya Sevika Samiti (80 centres) are three major Sangh women's organisations. BJP Yuva Morcha, Youth Wing, Adivasi Morcha and Mohila Morcha have a prominent base. Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh manages 171 trade unions with a cadre of 1,82,000. The 30,000-strong Bharatiya Kisan Sangh functions in 100 blocks. The Sangh also operates various trusts and branches of national and international institutions to aid fundraising, including Friends of Tribal Society, Samarpan Charitable Trust, Sookruti, Yasodha Sadan, and Odisha International Centre. Sectarian development and education are carried out by Ekal Vidyalayas, Vanavasi Kalyan Ashrams/Parishads (VKAs), Vivekananda Kendras, Shiksha Vikas Samitis and Sewa Bharatis — cementing the brickwork for hate and civil polarisation.

This massive mobilisation has erupted in ugly incidents against both Christians and Muslims. In 1998, 5,000 Sangh activists allegedly attacked the Christian dominated Ramgiri-Udaygiri villages in Gajapati district, setting fire to 92 homes, a church, police station, and several government vehicles. Earlier, Sangh activists allegedly entered the local jail forcibly and burned two Christian prisoners to death. In 1999, Graham Staines, 58, an Australian missionary and his 10- and six-year-old sons were torched in Manoharpur village in Keonjhar. A Catholic nun, Jacqueline Mary was gangraped by men in Mayurbhanj and Arul Das, a Catholic priest, was murdered in Jamabani, Mayurbhanj, followed by the destruction of churches in Kandhamal. In 2002, the VHP converted 5,000 people to Hinduism. In 2003, the VKA organised a 15,000- member rally in Bhubaneswar, propagating that Adivasi (and Dalit) converts to Christianity be denied affirmative action. In 2004, seven women and a male pastor were forcibly tonsured in Kilipal, Jagatsinghpur district, and a social and economic boycott was imposed against them. A Catholic church was vandalised and the community targeted in Raikia.

Change the cast, the story is still the same. 1998: A truck transporting cattle owned by a Muslim was looted and burned, the driver's aide beaten to death in Keonjhar district. 1999: Shiekh Rehman, a Muslim clothes merchant, was mutilated and burned to death in a public execution at the weekly market in Mayurbhanj. 2001: In Pitaipura village, Jagatsinghpur, Hindu communalists attempted to orchestrate a land-grab connected to a Muslim graveyard. On November 20, 2001, around 3,000 Hindu activists from nearby villages rioted. Muslim houses were torched, Muslim women were ill-treated, their property, including goats and other animals, stolen. 2005: In Kendrapara, a contractor was shot on Govari Embankment Road, supposedly by members of a Muslim gang. Sangh groups claimed the shooting was part of a gang war associated with Islamic extremism and called for a 12hour bandh. Hindu organisations are alleged to have looted and set Muslim shops on fire.

It is Saraswati who pioneered the Hinduisation of Kandhamal since 1969. Activists targeted Adivasis, Dalits, Christians and Muslims through socio-economic boycotts and forced conversions (named 're'conversion, presupposing Adivasis and Dalits as 'originally' Hindus).

Kandhamal first witnessed Hindutva violence in 1986. The VKAs, instated in 1987, worked to Hinduise Kondh and Kui Adivasis and polarise relations between them and Pana Dalit Christians. Kandhamal remains socio-economically vulnerable, a large percentage of its population living in poverty. Approximately 90 percent of Dalits are landless. A majority of Christians are landless or marginal landholders. Hindutva ideologues say Dalits have acquired economic benefits, augmented by Christianisation. This is not borne out in reality.

In October 2005, converting 200 Bonda Adivasi Christians to Hinduism in Malkangiri, Saraswati said: "How will we… make India a completely Hindu country? The feeling of Hindutva should come within the hearts and minds of all the people." In April 2006, celebrating RSS architect Golwalkar's centenary, Saraswati presided over seven yagnas attended by 30,000 Adivasis. In September 2007, supporting the VHP's statewide road-rail blockade against the supposed destruction of the mythic 'Ram Setu', Saraswati conducted a Ram Dhanu Rath Yatra to mobilise Adivasis.

In 2008, Hindutva discourse named Christians as 'conversion terrorists'. But the number of such conversions is highly inflated. They claim there are rampant and forced conversions in Phulbani-Kandhamal. But the Christian population in Kandhamal is 1,17,950 while Hindus number 5,27,757. Orissa Christians numbered 8,97,861 in the 2001 census — only 2.4 percent of the state's population. Yet, Christian conversions are storied as debilitating to the majority status of Hindus while Muslims are seen as 'infiltrating' from Bangladesh, dislocating the 'Oriya (and Indian) nation'.

The right to religious conversion is constitutionally authorised. Historically, conversions from Hinduism to Christianity or Islam have been a way to escape caste oppression and social stigma for Adivasis and Dalits. In February 2006, the VHP called for a law banning (non- Hindu) religious conversions. In June 2008, it urged that religious conversion be decreed a 'heinous crime' across India.

'Reconversion' strategies of the Sangh appear to be shifting in Orissa. The Sangh reportedly proposed to 'reconvert' 10,000 Christians in 2007. But fewer public conversion ceremonies were held in 2007 than in 2004- 2006. Converting politicised Adivasi and Dalit Christians to Hinduism is proving difficult. The Sangh has instead increased its emphasis on the Hinduisation of Adivasis through their participation in Hindu rituals, which, in effect, 'convert' Adivasis by assuming that they are Hindu.

The draconian Orissa Freedom of Religion Act (OFRA), 1967, must be repealed. There are enough provisions under the Indian Penal Code to prevent and prohibit conversions under duress. But consenting converts to Christianity are repeatedly charged under OFRA, while Hindutva perpetrators of forcible conversions are not. The Sangh contends that 'reconversion' to Hinduism through its 'Ghar Vapasi' (homecoming) campaign is not conversion but return to Hinduism, the 'original' faith. This allows them to dispense with the procedures under OFRA.

The Orissa Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1960 should also be repealed. It is utilised to target livelihood practices of economically disenfranchised groups, Adivasis, Dalits, Muslims, who engage in cattle trade and cow slaughter.

In fact, a CBI investigation into the activities of the VHP, RSS and Bajrang Dal is crucial as per the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. Groups such as the VHP and VKA are registered as cultural and charitable organisations but their work is political in nature. They should be audited and recognised as political organisations, and their charitable status and privileges reviewed.

The state and central government's refusal to restrain Hindu militias evidences their linkage with Hindutva (BJP), soft Hindutva (Congress), and the capitulation of civil society to Hindu majoritarianism. How would the nation have reacted if groups with affiliation other than than militant Hinduism executed riot after riot: Calcutta 1946, Kota 1953, Rourkela 1964, Ranchi 1967, Ahmedabad 1969, Bhiwandi 1970, Aligarh 1978, Jamshedpur 1979, Moradabad 1980, Meerut 1982, Hyderabad 1983, Assam 1983, Delhi 1984, Bhagalpur 1989, Bhadrak 1991, Ayodhya 1992, Mumbai 1992, Gujarat 2002, Marad 2003, Jammu 2008?

The BJD-BJP government has repeatedly failed to honour the constitutional mandate separating religion from state. In 2005-06, Advocate Mihir Desai and I convened the Indian People's Tribunal on Communalism in Orissa, led by Retired Kerala Chief Justice KK Usha. The Tribunal's findings detailed the formidable mobilisation by majoritarian communalist organisations, including in Kandhamal, and the Sangh's visible presence in 25 of 30 districts. The report did not invoke any response from the state or central government.

In January 2000, The Asian Age reported: "'One village, one shakha' is the new slogan of the RSS as it aims to saffronise the entire Gujarat state by 2005." Then ensued the genocide of March 2002. In 2003, Subash Chouhan, then Bajrang Dal state convener, stated: "Orissa is the second Hindu Rajya (to Gujarat)."

We all know what has happened in Kandhamal December 2007, and again now. The communal situation in Orissa is dire. State and civil society resistance to Hindutva's ritual and catalytic abuse cannot wait.

Law & Justice: a Play about Sharia

Source: Muslim Canadian Congress
47 minutes
Westerners may find this play strange, but it works well with good-hearted Muslims who used to believe in so-called Allah's law - many of them rejected Sharia Law or at least started questioning its divinity after viewing the drama and movie. This is actually created specially for Muslim world where people are illiterate but simple, honest but ignorant and explosively emotional about Islam and Sharia. The drama is given a shape that suites their psyche, and it works.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Mina Farah burnt his muslim rojader son insted of burried , a humble question to "sushil'n HR groups

Who gave you the right to say I am hindu sympathiser or not? I am a sympathiser of human being. Wht's wrong in being a hindu sympathiser? You do not have any business in it. You proved by your postings that how rude and inhuman you are!!! Please stay off of doing showdowns for nothing. Never become an issue personal. You are living in a non-muslim country, eating from them, living with their mercy, and they want you to be non-racial. But you are inflaming the racist fire. You do not understand it, and only wish that God someday will help you to be human above any racism.

Mr Raisuddin,

Please come to your sense. You may be a hindu sympatheser;may be considering to cremate yourself (you can do it if you leave behind a will). She is a hindu extremist, no doubt; but the boy was not. The boy was a practising muslim. Regarding, mother can do whatever she likes. No, she cannot do whatever she likes, because the boy was an adult. Can you do anything to your children? can you do anything against the will of your children? for example, arranging marriage against their will? sending them to Hindu temple to learn Gita instead of Holy Quran? You are looking after them does not mean, you can do whatever you like.

Mina Fara's child could not do anything because he was dead. Playing with a deceased is a kind of sadistic behavoiur. Burning him against his will is a terrorist act.

Since she is a hindu, she did burn her son in the hindu way, I do not see anything wrong in it. She lost her son. She must be grieving a lot. Folks! she is human being. What the criticizers are doing, making triple mistakes: (1) On her worst time of the life, they are giving her serious troubles instead of comforting her, (2) She is hindu, she burnt her dead son, there is nothing wrong in it but they are asking for punishing her more, means, trying to create another hindu-muslim confrontation by which many lives may go, (3) As a mother she has every right to do what ever she wants, with the deadbody of her son, not breaking the rule of the country, and she did not do that, but still these people are accusing her, which is just unacceptable. This only shows that some people can be so illogical, impractical, inhuman, and extreme selfish in just their own attitude; being even extremely wrong.

This is not a family matter. It is human right of a person. The child was a practicing muslim and you cremated him against his wish. It is a crime. People like you are really the trouble maker of this society. You twist things according to your liking and dis-liking.

I agree completely with Cyrus. It is not our business how Mina Farah handles her personal matters. Mr. Aminul Islam should keep his nose within the parameters of his own family.

Mr. Aminul Islam....no one cares if you demand exemplary punishment of Mina Farah. We demand exemplary punishment of those who advocate for throwing stones at women, burn down temples, rape and ravage women of other faith, discriminate against anyone who doesn't subscribe their way. How about we start there? Please, don't even try to tell me that this is what Islam preaches. I know enough about Islam to know that IT IS the most secular of all religions, and hatred has no place in it.

Mina Farah, an exemplary and accomplished businesswoman and a tremendous writer, decided what she felt was the right thing to do for her family. If she did wrong, she is accountable to God, and not you. You, Sir, should worry about your family and how you will be burried, and not interfere into her decision.
