[mukto-mona] Re: Baba Saheb Ambedkar: Why Go For Conversion?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49904

Dear Mr.Yogi Sikand

This time I am quite unable to appreciate you at all. What
necessitates you to post what Mr.Baba Saheb Ambedkar wrote about
conversion. He is not at all anybody whom we may consider our ideal
personality. Well, we are here in this forum to raise our voices
against any sort of discrimination in the pretext of race, religion
and culture. We also believe that while a group of people do have
right to preach their own dogma the others also have right to oppose
such an attempt provided that everything is done in a peaceful
manner. True class system is prescribed in hindu religious
scriptures. It was mainly done to establish an economic system based
on division of labour that was probably needed at that time.
Afterwards it was exploted by the privileged groups of people to the
unprecedented sufferings of the oppressed groups. If we notice what
the scriptures say about division of labour we can easily come to
the conclusion that this division is mainly based on skill and
capability of individual to perform a particular type of task. It is
sad that it was not practiced in that light. Whatsoever, the class
system has no relevance in the context of the world today.I believe
it will be completely eradicated shortly with the ceonomic and
social progress of the people. Now, what about slavery that has been
widely practiced by the people other than the hindus for many
centuries with complete support of their so called egalitarian
religions? Would Mr. Sikand be honest enough to write against these
so called egalitarian religions that devide humanity between free
men and slaves? I guess he has got that much integrity not to be
afraid of being beheaded for speaking the truth.

[mukto-mona] Large dams

Napal Maoist supremo and Premier Pushpakamal Daha a k a Prachanda supported large dams in Nepal, caring little for the contemporary appraisal of large dams many of whom have already been decommissioned. This needs to be strongly protested.

We're Paying the Price Today for Decades of Relentless Dam Building By Rachel Olivieri 18 Sep 08 (http://www.alternet.org/story/99375/?page=entire)
Decades ago three new dams were started every day. But the debts of temporary prosperity are all coming due and payable today

Between 1950 and 1970, three new dam projects were started every single day in the world. Today, primarily in China, Turkey, Brazil, Japan and India, one new dam project begins daily with an average completion date of four years. Fifteen hundred dams are currently under construction worldwide.
Dams fragment, divert and subjugate the world's rivers. In one long lifespan, beginning with the inauguration of Hoover Dam in 1936, the engineering marvel of the 20th century, civilization has altered the most important function that makes the earth work, water. Thus, transmuting humanity into something foreign to the earth it inhabits -- a stranger to the very system which gave rise to our species.
The late Carl Sagan was among precious few visionary humans who shared the extraordinary ability to differentiate between deep thought and deep nonsense and recognized the persistence of a satisfying delusion to perpetuate the latter. Dr. Sagan wrote, "We go about our daily lives understanding almost nothing of the world. We give little thought to the machinery that generates the sunlight that makes life possible, to the gravity that glues us to an earth that otherwise sends us spinning off into space or to the atoms of which we are made and on whose stability we fundamentally depend."
Without some sense, some outline of how the earth works and our relationship to it, one is deprived of knowing, let alone of asking, the really important questions that promote regenerative life and prevent massive-scale destruction and degeneration.
It is only in blindness that ignorance can find engineering arrogance and feed the certainty of human expediency -- that millions of dams can exist worldwide strangling the lubricant of life itself. It is true that dams have created a seemingly unlimited oasis in arid and semi-arid regions of the world and have produced unimaginable population centers in water-stressed locations, made possible food production on marginal arid lands, and provided cheap taxpayer subsidized water and artificial lakes aplenty for fishing, camping and boating.
It seems a good thing, yet, what isn't accounted for is the short-term duration and ecological costs. It has created this artificial bonanza by short-circuiting the natural system of limitations much as the one time wonder of fossil fuels has short-circuited and driven the industrial revolution. The debts of temporary prosperity are all due and payable in the 21st century.
In the present state of affairs, water, energy, population, war, global economic expansionism, and failing ecological systems are sending shockwaves throughout the vulnerable global community while staggering the biosphere which keeps us among the living tentatively.
Earth Recycling
The world's water budget is a fixed volume and has remained unchanged for roughly 2.2 billion years in its present state. About 1 percent of the world's total water circulates as freshwater while oceans represent 97 percent of the world's stores and the remaining 2 percent is tied up in glaciers and polar ice caps. This finite water pie divides ever more thinly as population, agriculture and the industrial economy expands.
The uninterrupted Earth is a dynamic solar and geothermal energy system which powers the hydrologic and rock cycles. It conducts and convects energy flows from the earth's 10,000 degree iron core outward through the mantle and lithosphere (crust) generating plate collisions that move continents and trip earthquakes. Magma driven plate collisions uplift mountain ranges and setoff volcanoes recycling lava and gases on land and underwater replenishing both with life-producing minerals.
Solar energy evaporates surface water primarily from oceans to atmosphere to land as water or snow. Erosive rainfall or expanding ice in rock crevices tears down mountains as fast as they rise. The Earth's lumpy land surface is a massive drainage system. From high to low, meandering and networked creeks and rivers drive the rock and mineral cycle. A river system operates on the principle of erosion and deposition. As a river gains water volume and speeds up it erodes and picks up rock and sediment. As it loses volume and slows down it drops some of its load. Large pulses of water flush sediments onto the rivers floodplain creating fertile soil before arriving at its delta entry to the sea.
Remaining sediments combine with the heavy basalt sea floor at the shoreline which is being subducted under the lighter continental plate from volcanic spreading forces at the Mid-Oceanic Ridge. This continuous underwater volcanic ridge runs like the seams of a baseball throughout the world's oceans. Everything cycles like a big conveyor; from Mid-Oceanic Ridge pushing the sea floor towards continental plates where it subducts back into the mantle to raise a mountain or explode through a volcano over geologic time. Dams, known as nickpoints, interrupt and distort the natural transport machinery between land and sea.
River Interrupted
Dams quiet the waters and backfill canyons forming massive lakes that produce and release vast amounts of methane from rotting vegetation underwater. The energy-deprived river unloads its rock and sediment load filling the reservoir, predicting its eventual self-cancellation by virtue of sedimentation fill. The only question is how will it end and what will civilization do when it does? What engineering-dominate options remain to further alter, manipulate or control the world?
The National Inventory on Dams shows the United States has constructed 79,000 dams large enough to require state and federal monitoring. These higher risk categories are often located near enough to population centers to pose a direct safety risk to human life and property. Worldwide, there are 800,000 similarly sized dams that are regulated and present equal challenges. Inventoried or not, total dams in the US may exceed 2.5 million and perhaps tens of millions worldwide. They interrupt and fragment the rock cycle and flow of more than 60 percent of the world's major rivers with one or more large dams.
The International Commission on Large Dams reveals 45,000 dams of the world are mega-whoppers with heights up to 1,000 feet and volume capacities exceeding many million acre feet (MAF) of water.
A recent study measured the volume capacities of 29,484 large reservoirs throughout the world. It determined their storage capacity was about 8.7 billion acre feet (BAF) of freshwater. That's enough water to make a nine foot lake out of Alaska, Texas, California, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada combined. This immense artificial above-ground storage is counter intuitive to nature's freshwater storage system which stores only .016 percent of all the circulating freshwater in all natural lakes, rivers, streams, creeks and atmosphere combined -- preferring instead to store 80 percent to 90 percent of the world's circulating freshwater underground free from evaporation and sedimentation.
Still more revealing is the loss of artificial reservoir stores through evaporation. Although evaporation rates vary from region to region, a 1998 U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS) study of California's reservoirs in all nine major hydrologic regions recorded 2,342,800 AF of evaporation, about .06 percent of California's 40 MAF of reservoir storage. Using a back-of-the-envelope estimation applying .06 percent evaporation rate to the world's 8.7 BAF of reservoir stored water yields 522 MAF of evaporation which is about 2.5 years of total California rainfall and 16 years of California water draws for agriculture. That's water that doesn't infiltrate as groundwater to feed wells or perennial streams, or grow food, or evapotranspire through wetlands, grasslands, woodlands, and forests, or provide water for wildlife (aquatic and terrestrial) and the billion humans on the planet who don't have access to unpolluted water.
The World Commission on Dams estimates that 3.1 billion acre foot of freshwater is withdrawn (as opposed to total stores) from lakes, rivers, and aquifers annually. That equals the total discharge of 7 Mississippi Rivers, or 22 Columbia Rivers, or 221 Colorado Rivers. Here again it would cover with 3 foot of water the above mentioned seven states totaling 1 billion surface acres and is 93 times the amount of water drawn from all California reservoirs by agriculture annually -- a lot of water. The 3.1 billion acre foot number is still more revealing when one considers that over and above storage and withdrawals, most nearly 65 percent of all rainfall evaporates before it can become part of either surface or groundwater stores.
Aside from warming atmospheric conditions, and considering only current global population additions (80 million per year), the equivalent of adding a new Germany annually, and factoring rising water consumption rates which triple with each population doubling, all of human enterprises will consume and significantly pollute 90 percent of all the available freshwater by 2025 leaving a scant 10 percent to support the earths dwindling water-dominant ecosystem.
Are we playing against ourselves?
When 1964 American Nobel Prizing-winning physicist Charles Townes down-played his break-out laser technology with reporters he demurred, "When I hear that kind of thing, it reminds me of what the beaver told the rabbit as they stood at the base of Hoover Dam: 'No, I didn't build it myself, but it's based on an idea of mine.'"
In the 1960's, the age without limits, this telling remark reflects how little was known and understood about the natural world and the accumulative impacts of dams. Since the idea of the beaver wasn't to dam major rivers but build small organic dams on its many tributaries. And then these temporary ecosystems evolved and produced abundant life. They reduced flooding and erosion, enhanced groundwater penetration, created the valley's precious topsoil and fed a radiant food web including decomposing bacteria, amphibians, fisheries, insects, birds, herbivores and carnivores. Comparing a beaver to Hoover Dam is like comparing life to death. Aldo Leopold, the legendary and visionary U.S. Forest Service land manager of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s said dams make the land sick and provide only a temporary prosperity followed by tremendous vulnerability. This ecological reality is incontrovertible -- all dams have an end date.
California leads the list with dams near self-cancellation. Within the next generation, 85 percent of all U.S. dams will have degenerated to the point of exhausting their operational lifespan of fifty years requiring decommissioning or massive repairs and upgrades. Now consider that every sweet spot in every geologically sane canyon that might reasonably hold a dam already has an aging dam, what then?
Let's pause for just a moment and ask some relevant questions. What will it cost to maintain, repair, upgrade, and build new dams to replace those that fail or are decommissioned, and restore dysfunctional watersheds impacted by dams? Let me proffer a worldwide estimate to maintain the current population of 6.7 billion without any further additions.
Factoring ecological restoration, maintenance, repair, decommissioning, and replacement cost of the world's developed water infrastructure as it's currently engineered would likely be a cost greater than all the energy expended on all engineering projects from the beginning of civilization and this cost would recur every fifty years or so. Now factor in a population adding 1 billion every thirteen years?
Is it even possible at this stage of civilization to convince people to care about a time on earth that many will not have to live in?
These statistics and trajectories have no caution value to a species front-row seated as the primary agent of geologic change on Earth. For example, in three long lifespans, Europeans have altered a continuous American wilderness into a networked, layered, and interwoven mass of asphalt-spreading, carbon-coughing, concrete-lining, pipeshed-connecting, aqueduct-flowing, levee-bunkering, grid-generating, wireless-transmitting, urban-sprawling, mall-cloning, river-damming, and resource-consuming experiment in human unconsciousness.
Dams provide that tempting illusion of prosperity whose short-term gains literally vandalize the future of civilization and natural terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity. This reality remains an abstraction to a developed and developing world breast-fed on cheap energy, cheap water, and unconscious consumption of finite resources.
The tenant of the economic element states clearly that the natural state of soil, rainfall, creeks and streams, forests, valleys, wetlands, deserts, mountains, etc. have no intrinsic value in and of themselves. And only those aspects that can be justified as an economic benefit to mankind first (logging, mining, damming, intensive agricultural production, urban development, or recreation) are redeemable and can be supported in so far as they produce artificial wealth through income generation. Commodification of elements cycling and recycling from the basement of time, as its sole recognized value displays an arrogance not intended by nature or nature's god.
If the current growing population of 6.7 billion is considered a benefit to mankind, than dams are beneficial. If the vulnerability of dense populations downstream of dams is a benefit to mankind, than dams are beneficial. If agricultural production on arid lands that require large volumes of water that salinate the soil and demand large inputs of fossil-fuel based fertilizers and pesticides that runoff and pollute groundwater is considered a benefit to mankind, than dams are beneficial. If the displacement of 80 million people from their homelands to accommodate dams is a benefit to mankind, than dams are beneficial. If the destruction of life-supporting ecosystems and fishery resources is a benefit to mankind, than dams are beneficial. If the inequitable sharing of benefits and costs is a benefit to mankind, than dams are beneficial. If debt burden, cost overruns, deferred maintenance costs and the impoverishment of people is a benefit to mankind, than dams are the most beneficial engineering endeavor of human history second only to nuclear weapons. If that's the guess then God help us, because common sense hasn't.

[mukto-mona] Amartya Sen spk

Taking advantage of being India's only Nobel laureate in economics so far, Amartya Sen sings to the Tata-CPI(M) tune, forgetting that global food crisis puts a break on overdrive in industrialisation, scuttling hectarage for food prodction.
SR

Huge price of street politics
- AMARTYA SEN ON THE SINGUR SITUATION (http://telegraphindia.com/1080920/jsp/frontpage/story_9861298.jsp)

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, in a letter emailed to The Telegraph editor Aveek Sarkar, assesses the Singur situation and warns of the consequences if the "attraction of street activism" persists and the Tatas pull out.

Thank you for asking me about my assessment of the Singur situation. I have, in fact, been trying to follow the events as closely as possible, and I must confess I am greatly concerned about what is going on. It is a complex subject, and we have to consider many different issues together.

First, as I argued in my two Telegraph essays on December 29 and 30 last year, unlike the Nandigram decision, which was (I believe) significantly mistaken, the Singur project with the Tatas was basically sound. West Bengal badly needs industries and new employment and income earning opportunities, and Tatas with the ancillary enterprises would help in that greatly, and also encourage a new image of West Bengal as being no longer hostile to industrial investment.

Second, it is a pity that the plot that the Tatas wanted for the factory, based on their concerns (including closeness to Kolkata), is not only well suited for their project but also fertile for agriculture. It would have been easier if the location were different, but that is no longer a possibility. I am not concerned here so much about the aggregate loss of agricultural land, since that is relatively small, and the income and employment gain from economic expansion in the Singur region would be incomparably larger. What is not, however, small is the loss for those owners of land who did not want to part with their plots, and that is a serious issue.

Third, I argued in my Telegraph essays that (1) it would have been much better to buy the land involved without any compulsion, rather than acquiring it (acquirement has to be the last resort, not the first move), and (2) even with acquirement, giving a 40% higher price than the existing market price was not adequate, since with the entry of industries the land prices would rise much more than that. Of course, if Tatas move out now (as seems likely), the land prices in and around Singur would drop dramatically as Singur returns to its old economic state. That should be a big concern right now for the political protesters, but on the part of the Government of West Bengal, there was a strong case for offering a higher price originally as part of the Singur project, since — with the Tatas there — land price in Singur would be much higher than what the government initially offered and paid.

Fourth, the new compensation offer made by the government is much more reasonable. The higher land prices now offered (combined with the other facilities that have also been offered, including employment arrangements) make it a good compromise.

Fifth, the protesters might be persuaded by their political leadership that their interests would be best served by getting back their old piece of land. Attachment to particular plots is certainly an understandable desire. But the world in which all this will happen will be very different. The Tatas have made clear that they will move out if they get less land than they have been given (they judge that they need that land for the viability of their project). Not just Maharashtra, but also Karnataka and Uttaranchal, among other states, seem to be ready with alternative offers much more favourable to the Tatas. Indeed, there is good reason to expect that the Tatas are very much in the process of relocating, unless there is a fairly immediate breakthrough (which now seems unlikely). With their departure from West Bengal will come a huge fall in land prices all around Singur, and also loss of job opportunities that will affect the local population. I am not sure how much the leaders of the protest movements have thought through these issues.

Sixth, for West Bengal as a whole, it would be a huge economic setback, if the Tatas do move out. Its impact would not be confined only to the economic loss from the withdrawal of investments of the Tatas and the ancillary producers, but also from the general sense across India that the politics of West Bengal makes it nearly impossible to base any new economic move in the state, and that the single-minded politics of the street can drive out any new enterprise.

That politics might change over time once the terrible consequences of industrial and economic stagnation are more widely appreciated and understood. But for the moment the political attraction of street activism seems dominant, supplemented intellectually by the old physiocratic illusion of prosperity grounded only on agriculture. The latter piece of romantic thought cannot but fade over time with the influence of realism (no country has ever achieved much prosperity on the basis of agriculture alone). But at this moment realism looks like a distant dream.

[mukto-mona] Saudi cleric's fatwa on 'immoral' TV

Saudi cleric's fatwa on 'immoral' TV

Dear forum members:

I was appalled learning from the news media that a prominent hard-liner Mullah had recently issued a fatwa in which he said that it is permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV that show "immoral" content.  The Mullah in question is none other than Sheik Saleh al-Lihedan, the chief of kingdom's highest tribunal, the Supreme Judiciary Council in Saudi Arabia.

We all should denounce this edict (fatwa) given by Mullah Sheik al-Lihedan.  The Saudi authorities should immediately sack the cleric for agitating the Allah-fearing Muslims allover the world.  This kind fatwa promotes extremism, terrorism, etc., to say the least.  The cleric hardly knows the art of self control.  In the month of Ramadan Muslims allover the world are reminded to control one's ego, lust, anger, avarice, etc. etc. But in reality, it is just the opposite.

The hard-core Muslims should not purchase any TV for their homes lest they are exposed to "immoral" contents provided by TV networks.  They should show their restraints when they watch TV programs.  It is heartening to see that secular-minded Arab intellectuals have vociferously denounced the fatwa given by Sheik al-Lihedan.

Sincerely,

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

-----------------------
Arabs denounce cleric's fatwa on 'immoral' TV
By DONNA ABU-NASR, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 45 minutes ago

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Arabs across the ideological spectrum, from secular-minded liberals to Muslim hard-liners, are denouncing a top Saudi cleric's edict that it was permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV stations that show "immoral" content.

Many expressed worry the recent comments by Sheik Saleh al-Lihedan — chief of the kingdom's highest tribunal, the Supreme Judiciary Council — would fuel terrorism, encouraging attacks on station employees and owners.

The edict, or fatwa, has also focused the spotlight on Saudi Arabia's legal system because of al-Lihedan's senior position in the judiciary. The system is run by Islamic cleric-judges, many of them hard-liners, and has increasingly been criticized by some Saudis because of the wide discretion judges have in punishing criminals and the perception that many judges are out of touch with the realities of the world.

Even conservative clerics who agree that Arab satellite networks show too many "indecent" programs said al-Lihedan had gone too far.

"Our religion prevents Muslims from watching films that provide seduction, obscenity and vulgarity," said Sheik Hazim Awad, an Iraqi cleric, who, like al-Lihedan, is Sunni Muslim.

But "the real Muslim can just cancel (subscriptions to) these channels," he said.

Many conservatives frown on the Arab world's numerous satellite networks for airing music videos — often with scantily clad women singers — or Western movies and TV shows like "Sex and the City," from which nude scenes are sometimes but not always cut.

Obscenity isn't the only thing that disturbs some. On Tuesday, another Saudi cleric, Sheik Mohammed Munajjid, said the cartoon character Mickey Mouse should be killed. Munajjid said in an interview with a religious Web site that under Islamic law, rats and mice are considered "repulsive" and as "soldiers of Satan."

"For children they've become something great and beloved. Like this Mickey Mouse, who is seen as a great figure, even though under Islamic law, Mickey Mouse should be killed," said Munajjid, who is a well-known cleric but does not hold a government position.

The controversy over al-Lihedan's fatwa began a week ago, when the cleric was answering questions from callers to the daily "Light in the Path" religious program on Saudi state radio. One caller asked about Islam's view of the owners of satellite TV channels that show "bad programs" during the holy month of Ramadan, which began more than two weeks ago.

"I want to advise the owners of these channels, who broadcast calls for such indecency and impudence ... and I warn them of the consequences," al-Lihedan said in the program. "Those calling for corrupt beliefs, certainly it's permissible to kill them."

The remarks were especially surprising because many of the most popular Arab satellite networks are owned by Saudi princes and well-connected Saudi and Gulf businessmen.

On Sunday, reportedly under pressure from senior government figures, al-Lihedan appeared on Saudi state TV to explain his comments, apparently to prevent vigilante killings. He said owners should first be brought to trial and then sentenced to death if other penalties don't deter them.

He said his "advice" was aimed at owners who broadcast witchcraft, indecent programs, shows mocking Islamic scholars or religious police and comedies inappropriate for Ramadan.

The edict chilled managers of satellite networks. Several channels based in Dubai declined comment. One network representative said the staff was taking the fatwa very seriously, but he did not want his name or channel revealed. "Why select yourself as a target by commenting on it?" he said.

Saudi Arabia's judiciary is a bastion of hard-line clerics implementing Islamic law under the strict Wahhabi interpretation. Judges are appointed by the king on the recommendation of the Supreme Judicial Council and have complete discretion to set sentences, except in cases where Islamic law outlines a punishment, such as capital crimes.

King Abdullah has said reforming the legal system is one of his priorities, but so far few changes have been announced — a sign of wariness in confronting the powerful clerics.

One Saudi cleric challenged al-Lihedan, telling the Saudi Al-Jazirah newspaper that the new edict would "lend support to terrorism."

Militants will "recruit our youths to take lives and blow up stations and the properties of the owners of the stations, all based on (al-Lihedan's) grave response," said Sheik Abdul-Mohsen al-Obaikan, an adviser at the Justice Ministry and a member of the appointed Consultative Council, which acts like a parliament.

In Jordan, hard-line cleric Ibrahim Zeid Kailani said although the networks are spreading "decay" among the youth, it's the responsibility of the government and not individuals to deal with the issue.

"Such edicts, which call for killing people, instigate sedition," said Kailani, who heads the Islamic Action Front's Scholars Committee, a hawkish group. "They could transform the countries into internal battlefields."

Around the Arab world, many said el-Lihedan was out of line.

"He shouldn't give such a judgment because he's not God," said Noora Baker, a 27-year-old folkloric dancer from the Palestinian city of Ramallah. "I am against religion interfering with the matters of society."

Here is my article that The Daily Star, Friday, Sept.19, 2008 has printed with slight censorial efiting. Could not understand why "right wing" was edited out from the identifiaction of talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh. Wonder who is breathing down the neck of DS editors?

279 fall victim to extra-judicial killing in 20 months: Says Odikhar report

Staff Correspondent, The Daily Star, September 13, 2008

http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=54585

At least 279 people fell victim to extrajudicial killing by the law
enforcement agencies across the country during the state of emergency
between January 2007 and September 2008, revealed a study report
yesterday.

The report published by Odhikar, a human rights organisation, covers
20 months of the present government.

The government has set up National Human Rights Commission in the
country only to shore up their credibility before the international
community rather than safeguarding the rights of the people, it added.

The report mentioned that the National Human Rights Commission
Ordinance 2007 provided for establishment of an independent body to
safeguard the people's rights, but it left the power to select the
chairman and members of the commission to a committee controlled by
the government officials, which is an impediment to establishing an
independent body.

The ordinance stated that the commission would resolve the human
rights violations through arbitration or mediation, but Odhikar said
the violators should be tried in a court of law, which will ensure
exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.

Besides, Right to Information Ordinance will curb the freedom of the
press and people's right to know rather than extending it, the report
said, adding that if the ordinance is promulgated, a person even a
journalist will need to apply in a prescribed form for information and
the authority will have the power to reject the application or provide
the information sought.

It also expressed concern that the draft ordinance was prepared by a
committee dominated by bureaucrats who ignored submissions made by key
stakeholders like Federal Union of Journalists, National Press Club
and South Asian Free Media Association.

Odhikar observed that the tele-tapping by the state is a direct
contravention of Article 43 (b) of the constitution that ensure a
person's right to the privacy of his correspondence and other means of
communication.

The report said Truth and Accountability Communication (Tac) has not
only failed to attain its desired objective, but it is also contrary
to the constitutional provisions and the spirit of law.

Tac's aim to re-energise the country's economy has failed. Corrupt
businessmen and bureaucrats are allowed to continue their businesses
and services while politicians are barred from contesting in the
elections after being bestowed with mercy from the commission, it
added.

The report further said the government should allow trade unionism in
all sectors to ensure a sustainable and healthy growth of the economy.

[mukto-mona] Singur - new twist

In striking contrast to the Ananda Bazar Patrika which - as usual - shows its abominable ability to suppress facts ( spiking the other view), The Statesman does the opposite.

Today it carried two exposes of the state government: 150 farmers wrote to the Block Dev Officer asking the latter to return the land they gave in exchange of returning the compensation cheque (BDO confirmed) and several companies like Proton in Malaysia and Hyundai in Chennai have manufacturing capacities much greater than the 650-crore by the Tata Motors. Dr Dipankar Dasgupta, formerly a professor at ISI, every day defends the Tatas more than the TML does in the blatantly pro-CPM TV channel - 24 Ghanta - even justifying real estate strip.

The online edition does not contain the portion inside bracket, I have typed from page 8. There the TML says, it needs land for "Transmission shops to make Engines and gear boxes" at Singur. Yesterday, Statesman carried a news that CITU and AITUC units agitate at Kharagpur Aptech factory of Kharagpur, 150 km away from Singur by road,  that manufactures gear box for Nano. Similar gear boxes for Nano are manufactured at Kinetic Honda in Pune.

Here are the bunch of news items in The Statesman.

New twist to Singur (http://thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=1&theme=&usrsess=1&id=223157)

Rajib Chatterjee

KOLKATA, Sept. 18: In an interesting development, more than 150 farmers of Singur who had given their land voluntarily for the Nano project have submitted applications to the block development officer expressing their willingness to return their compensation cheques and get their land back.

Mr Prasenjit Chakraborty, BDO, Singur confirmed to The Statesman: "I have received their applications. They want to get their land back by submitting (returning) their compensation cheques."

The applications have been forwarded to the district magistrate Hooghly, Mrs Neelam Meena, and authorities of West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC). The applicants have not given any reasons in their applications as to what prompted them to ask for their land back from the state government.

Singur Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee members alleged that these farmers had been forced to part with their plots for the project by CPI-M cadres two years ago. The CPI-M, on the other hand, came up with a counter allegation, that Trinamul Congress cadres are pressuring willing farmers to submit applications to block authorities demanding return of land.

Meanwhile, the state government's initiatives to end the Singur deadlock by offering a lucrative package to unwilling farmers suffered a setback after a majority of farmers refused to accept the government's new offer.

Reports available to Singur block office states that only six out of more than 2,000 unwilling farmers of Singur have accepted the fresh rehabilitation package which the state government had announced on 14 September. The package was announced to pacify unwilling farmers who have been waging a war to reoccupy their plots.

According to Mr Chakraborty, only six unwilling farmers have submitted application to the district magistrate stating that they don't have any objection to part with their land for the Nano project if compensation, as stated in the fresh package, is provided to them. "The package was expected to attract agitating farmers who have been spearheading a movement against the state government for the last three years for 'forcibly' taking away their land. But it has failed to convince agitating farmers," said another block official. Having realised that the fresh package has failed to attract agitating farmers, local CPI-M leaders have been mobilising cadres to convince unwilling farmers.

Tata claim

A statement by Tata Motors today said 17 farmers who lost their lands in Singur to make way for its car plant have applied for the new rehabilitation package announced by the West Bengal government.

Stalemate persists (http://thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=1&theme=&usrsess=1&id=223156)

KOLKATA, Sept. 18: The imbroglio over the small car factory at Singur showed little signs of being resolved. While Mr Prakash Karat, CPI-M general secretary, said that the state government was taking steps to solve the problem, an appointment which the Trinamul Congress had fixed with Governor Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi was cancelled today. A senior official at Writers' Buildings said: "The chapter is closed as far as the state government is concerned as there is nothing more to offer". The Singur issue figured at a meeting in the state Assembly today during the visit of a French Senate delegation. Meanwhile, Miss Mamata Banerjee, Trinamul Congress chief, said a party delegation would apprise the Governor of the developments.  SNS

997 acres? CM, experts must come clean (http://thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=1&theme=&usrsess=1&id=223155)

Statesman News Service

KOLKATA, Sept. 18: Does Tata Motors need 997 acres for its "integrated" car manufacturing facility at Singur? At his interaction with the media yesterday, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had insisted the company needs all that land. He went on to say the government's experts had independently corroborated this requirement. But inquiries by The Statesman suggest the experts may not have been right and that comparable car manufacturing facilities around the world do with far less and if this is so, the CM ought to explain how his experts came to their finding.

Mr Bhattacharjee had maintained that at the most 70 acres from the project area could be returned to unwilling farmers. He had said that "the central issue was not 50 or 100 acres but how much land would be required for setting up an integrated factory and how much could be taken out of the project area". Mr Bhattacharjee had added that the land requirement was not "merely a claim by the Tatas, but we have consulted experts before arriving at the quantum of land required for the project".

Tata Motors is said to need some 650 acres or so for the manufacturing plant and about 350 acres for ancillary units, to together make up the 997-acre "integrated" facility that Mr Bhattacharjee spoke of. Reports suggest that the company will make 100,000 cars annually, but that the Singur plant will eventually have capacity to produce 350,000 cars.

Proton, the Malaysian car company, makes 250,000 vehicles a year on a 250-acre factory in Shah Alam. Hyundai Motors India has installed capacity to make 530,000 cars at its 500-acre plant near Chennai. Ford Motors makes 300,000 vehicles annually on a 345-acre plot in Turkey. Toyota Motors makes 500,000 cars plus 500,000 engines in a 7 million square feet factory (about 180 acres) in the United States. Honda Motors makes nearly 200,000 cars on a 231-acre plant in Thailand. On the basis of land used by these facilities, it would seem that about one acre of land would be required to make 1,000 cars annually. Tata Motors would then need 350 acres ~ and not 650 acres ~ to make 350,000 cars, perhaps even less as the Nano is much smaller than the cars made by the other companies.

The Statesman asked Tata Motors Limited two questions:

1. Could you share with us the basis on which the Nano project needs 997 acres for the integrated production facility at Singur, given that comparable industry facilities producing as many ~ or more ~ cars than you propose to annually manage in much smaller areas?

2. Facts on land use by car production facilities in India and abroad collated by The Statesman would indicate that one acre for every 1,000 cars produced annually would be a fair industry benchmark. Do you agree?

Tata Motors replied: If the implicit purpose of these questions is to allude that Tata Motors and the vendors will be using land for other than manufacturing the car and its aggregates/components, let us proactively inform you that neither Tata Motors nor its vendors, being located at the Vendor Park, are creating realty for sale or any such purpose. We do not require to do it ~ it is not our business.

(If you have come across studies, we too can cite studies that in atypical plant of 100,000 unit capacity, minimum space requirement for the main plant is about 450 acres, increasing by 25 per cent for every additional 100,000 capacity. This is without taking into account requirement of vendors, who may collectively need about 90 per cent of the area needed by the main plant on a conservative basis.

The Singur Nano plant's capacity is 350,000. For a 350,000-unit plant, therefore, the land required would be more than 700 acres. For the vendor facilities, land required would be more than 650 acres. Together it would be more than 1300 acres.

But as you have noticed, the project is coming on much less. , Tata Motors' project at Singur for manufacturing Nano is an integrated project comprising the company's manufacturing facilities and Vendor Park  , a normal feature in modern world-class auto plants. The land leased by the WBIDC to Tata Motors for its own plant and land leased to vendors setting up facilities at the adjacent vendor park is what is required for the project.

Land required for an automobile plant depends on the manufacturing process, activities in-house and that outsourced. An automobile plant comprises different activities – Press Shop to make body parts, Weld shop to join them, Paint Shop to paint the body.Engine & Transmission shops to make Engines and gear boxes. Assembly Line to assemble all of them to make the car, Test truck to test them, besides internal road utilities, R & D centre, training centre, storage areas etc. The Singur plant requires all these facilities, and hence the area.

Similarly, Vendor Park houses vendors supplying key aggregates and components for the car, without which the project is not viable. The location of the Vendor Park, next to the plant, is essential for 'just-in-time' inventory management.)

[mukto-mona] Political parties

A political party is so important that without it the existence of democracy is even unthinkable.
Bangladesh is not running through the path of democracy right now though the present caretaker government is sincerely trying to turn this undemocratic course of the country into the course of democracy.
To this end, the government has already set a possible deadline of holding the parliamentary election before the end of the year-2008 and is doing all things necessary for the election to be held in a free, fair and credible manner participated by all political parties.
The general countrymen, as democracy loving people and want the wave of democracy be prevailed all over the country, expect all the political parties of the country will participate in the election to create an opportunity for them to lead a normal life in democratic atmosphere.

[ALOCHONA] I smell a RAT(S)

I smell a RAT(S)

Posted by Rumi

— smell a rat : to have a suspicion of something wrong [ Merriam-Webster Dictionary]
There is an extremely foul stench of rat I smell in the activities of the RATS (Razzak, Amu, Tofael and Suranjit) faction of Bangladesh Awami League. If we look back in recent history, this group joined hands with the military regime which illegally occupied the governance in Bangladesh. They have been the major accomplices in 'now notorious minus two' plan of this regime. Their intention was clear. Go to power by an unfair means, through the back door of conspiracy. Their two other plan was to get rid of Sheikh Hasina in from Awami league leadership, thus exerting control over the party. And their third goal was to eliminate politics of Ziaur Rahman from the planet.

All their plans failed miserably. Unlike BNP's turncoats, they however have been shrewd enough not to get ousted like Mannan Bhuiyan gong.

Now as there appears to be a U-turn in Bangladesh politics, this quartet started their second phase of conspiracy. Any politically savvy person will know that unity between political parties is vital for restoration of democracy. Anyone really wanting to get rid of the hidden martial law would do everything to prevent going back to the confrontational politics we've seen last 15 years.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that the RATS do not know/understand it. But their activities of last few days raise serious concern about their real intention. The comments of all four of them, esp. those of Razzak and Amu from yesterday were exceedingly offensive, unsuitable for a senior politician, divisive and unhealthy.

It is a shame that how these, once respected politician, sold their souls and became petty and cheap foot soldiers of a military general. Awami League leadership esp. Sheikh Hasina must be very cautious of this 'gang of four'. For the sake of democracy these four scoundrels must be confronted and stopped.

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Thoughts on Terror

Please read this 'balanced' article one more time, or, maybe two or three. Please go between lines. A hurried reading will not help. Take your time and read it. One or two hand picked sentences will not help at all. You need to grasp the integrated whole.

If one reads Yogi carefully, she will readily discover his clear cut disapproval of fundamentalism, fanaticism, religious militancy, and religious chauvinism---- be it Islamic or Hindutvabadi. State terrorism is a fact which he abhors as he rightly sees it as a source of actions in undesirable channels.

As he observes--I am sure rightly-- the Indian Muslims are gradually becoming more and more of a beleaguered religious minority, there is a need for the democratic and secular forces to stand behind them. India needs to minimize the strength of the divisive forces.

In this forum I have been following the exchanges on views whether religious minorities in Bangladesh are being persecuted or not. I am noticing unfortunate denial among some of the forum members. I highly appreciate those who admit that religious persecution exists in Bangladesh. We all also need to admit that it exists in India too.

We need more Yogis both in India and Bangladesh and also any where else in the world.

Re: [mukto-mona] Saudi cleric's fatwa on 'immoral' TV--comment on

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49921

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. It is very difficult to comment without seeing thr full text of fatwa.Mr Jaffor Ullah may forward the full text if he has it.
But if this is the fatwa, then he deserves condemnation.Fatwa is a ruling or opinion of a jurist, it is not binding on any body, it is not a court decision.
