[ALOCHONA] China to construct almost 73 per cent of the 151 km Bangladesh-Myanmar Friendship Road

China has agreed to bear the construction cost of a large part of the trans-international highway connecting the port city Chittagong with the Chinese growing business hub Kunming through Myanmar, communication ministry officials said Sunday.

The positive response by China to construct almost 73 per cent of the 151 km Bangladesh-Myanmar Friendship Road came during a recent visit by Chief Adviser to the caretaker government Fakhruddin Ahmed to that country.

The Chinese assurance thus removes the doubt over the funding of construction work of the highway linking Bawli Bazar with Kyauktaw inside Myanmar, officials said while referring to the first bilateral tour by the present caretaker administration chief to any country. The construction cost of the 110 km of the highway that China has agreed to bear is estimated at US$ 128 million.

Bangladesh signed a deal with Myanmar in 2006 to construct a tans-international highway in two phases. The country will bear the construction cost of 43 km-20km inside its own territory and 23km inside Myanmar-- in the first phase.

The military ruled Myanmar has long been showing reluctance to bear the construction cost of the remaining portion of the highway under the second phase.

Communication secretary Mahbubur Rahman, however, told the FE Sunday that they were yet to get an official version from the foreign ministry."The positive response from China will be most welcomed," he said.

The Chinese response will lend the much needed boost to the efforts for the construction of the trans-international highway as the country has long been trying to construct it to establish direct road link with Myanmar, China and other Southeast and East Asian countries, he said.

A senior official said the foreign ministry is expected to inform the communication ministry about outcome and developments of the CA's visit to China. He said the foreign ministry has already 'unofficially' informed the communication ministry about the issue which is considered very important in the context of the scheduled visit of a Myanmar vice-general to the capital next month.

Myanmar's Vice-Senior General Maung Aye will lead nearly 50-member team to discuss various issues, including the latest developments relating to the friendship highway. Communication ministry is now processing the tender documents for the construction of the first phase of the highway costing around $27 million.

The officials concerned said the road will boost regional cooperation by strengthening economic and trade relations between Bangladesh and other the South and Southeast Asian countries.

[mukto-mona] PREZ RACE: Bridget and the other McCains on the cover of People mag

From SAJAforum, the newsy SAJA blog - new South Asian stuff daily:
http://www.sajaforum.org

See the cover and post your comments at
http://www.sajaforum.org/2008/09/prez-race-bridg.html

Bridget McCain, and her famous family, were on the cover of last week's
People magazine, one of the most largest circulation magazines in the U.S.

I asked a friend in Bangladesh if there was any excitement there about
Bridget possibly moving into the White House in January 2009. Here's what
he wrote:

>>>
Lots of very silly articles called "Welcome Bridget, to the White
House."
Prothom Alo's magazine just had a cover story on her, featuring the
nun who has raised her until adoption.
The exuberant press is mostly in Bangla. The main English papers
(Daily Star & New Age) are hardline Obama supporters as far as I can tell.

Re: [mukto-mona] Baba Saheb Ambedkar: Why Go For Conversion?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49904

1. I fully agree with Yogi Sikand when he says that Baba Saheb Ambedkar was one of the greatest Indians ever produced. One should also agree that a citizen should have complete freedom in choosing his religion and as such countrywide Hindutvabadi crusade (wherever it is oppressive, suppressive, and coercive) against conversions is nothing but gross violation of basic human rights.

2. I have however a few comments on this great man and his 1936 speech in Mahar Conference held in Mumbai. In my opinion this speech was a product of his utmost frustration in dealing with the then orthodox higher caste Hindu leaders. Given the situation prevailing now 72 years after his speech, this speech also reflects, in my opinion,  his blurred vision (caused by the most severe form of segregation he went through and the negative attitudes of the caste Hindus around him and his people) about the future. He made an appeal to his people to convert in 1936, although he took about two decades to convert (to Buddhism) himself. He was made the Union Law Minister in 1947. He was made the chief architect of the Indian constitution which has made unlawful any thing and every thing racially discriminatory that he fought against throughout his life. He always had a vast section of the then political leaders including Gandhi on his side in his struggle
against casteism, although he always doubted Gandhi's sincerity. He also got immense support from some caste Hindus in building his career.

3. In his speech he suggested that conversion to any religion like Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, etc. would give the Dalits freedom. He contradicted his own suggestion as to conversion to Islam by subsequently pointing out that Islam had also casteism and that Islam persecuted women. Although he praised the kind of unity the Muslims would tend to show whenever their fellow coreligionists would be under threat from caste Hindus and saw this as a positive factor determining freedom for the Dalits, surprisingly he for himself chose Buddhism.

4. I wonder why he, a vastly learned man taught in the best schools of the world, gave more weight to spiritual status than to economic status in achieving freedom. He could easily find comrades from among the caste Hindus on his side to support his cause. But he chose a path that these potential comrades had nothing to do with.

5. I wonder if the Dalits who converted to Buddhism (or Islam or Christianity) are better off today than the Hindu Dalits. I wonder because as we look around we see that with education and economic independence casteism among the Hindus is going away--although not as fast as it should have been.

[mukto-mona] Angry response to me from Alaska

     Folks!
Here is proof for any of you who had any doubt that I may not be quite right about my facts. I'm pleased about the quote he has chosen. Notice the added self-revelation -- a blast of racist Islamophobic anger!
The "Anonymous" was responding to an earlier version that was posted in Khabrein.com (hence I'm a Mr. and a "Muslim from India").   For a fuller version of my article:

Anonymous --- Humorous Article!

Mr. Farida Majid

It is humorous to see how you view the Western US and specifically Alaska. The funniest statement of many in your article being the following:

"When you donĂ¢€™t have the brawns to fell trees in the dead of winter in Alaska that is when use your puny brain to create laws to make such logging illegal!"

As an Alaskan, I would love to see a Muslim from India attempt to fell a tree in the dead of winter in Prudhoe Bay where the oil drilling is done or in ANWR where they want to drill. I can assure you 100% that everyone thinking you are a terrorist will not be an issue, however you may have significant difficulty because there are no trees or forests in Prudhoe Bay.

P.S. The logging industry is still one of the largest in Alaska despite the environmental laws, and logging is done in summer for a reason.

[mukto-mona] Let the election be held

Much earlier the present caretaker government assured the people by
giving a deadline of holding the parliamentary election by the end of
the year-2008.
But a particular day or date for the election the countrymen were
looking forward, has been declared on September 20,2008 by the chief
adviser in his televised speech for the nation.
For about two years the country has been passing through an
undemocratic passage and all the people were desperately desiring the
wave of democracy to be prevailed all across the country.
The declaration of a particular date for election by the chief adviser
is like the cooler drops of rain as soothe as that of a dry got summer
day and an evidence of sincerity of the present government to pull the
country back to the right track of democracy.
The speech of the chief adviser has already been welcomed by all the
political parties and the countrymen are pleased with it.
Now the people want to see the caretaker government and all the
political parties of the country are working together forgetting all
disparities in the part to make the next election fruitful and
successful.

Re: [ALOCHONA] 3 varsity teachers among 11 militants held

If found guilty, they should be tried for treason and be hanged. These radical puritan groups keep our citizens dragging back to the 970 AD. The whole world is moving forward, and this cowards are stuck in their wahabi ideologies.

3 varsity teachers among 11 militants held

Twelve Hijbut Tahrir activists, three of whom are
university teachers, have been arrested in front of Rajshahi
City press club on the eve of holding a press conference
yesterday. Focus Bangla

Police arrested 11 Hijbut Tahrir activists at Sonadighi crossing in the Rajshahi northwestern city yesterday on the eve of their pre-announced press conference.

Among the arrested ones there are three university teachers. The three arrested teachers are Prof. Dr Syed Golam Mawla of Management Department and Prof. Ahmed Jamal of Chemistry Department of Dhaka University and Mamun Ansari of the private Southern University in Dhaka.

Police said they arrested the Tahrir men as "suspected militants" after they reached Rajshahi by a microbus to hold the press conference at the local Press Club at 1pm for announcing programme of the party. They were detained around 12:30pm on Thursday at Rajshahi Press Club.

The others held are believed to be students of different universities in the country. They are Masud Kawser, son of Shafiqul Islam of Chandpur district, Omar Farook, son of Sadiqul Islam of Chapainawabganj, Moniruzzaman Masud, son of Harunur Rashid of Noakhali, Saddam Hossain, son of Mohammad Hossain, and Mozammel Haque, son of Shamsul Islam, of Brahmanbaria, Akhtar Hossain, son of Ali Hossain of Chittagong, Jahedul Islam, son of Aftab Uddin of Kishoreganj, and their microbus driver Jahangir Alam, son of Abdur Rahman of Noakhali district.

Police also seized the microbus carrying them, 12 mobile-phone sets and huge leaflets and posters of the party from the possession of the Tahrir activists.

This group's abortive debut here came as a major matter after the JMB militants' march through this city at the height of their vigilance operation in the district and their eventual nemesis.

Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Detective Branch Ekramul Hossain said the university teachers and others were arrested as "suspected militants" in apprehension of their "subversive acts".

Carrying leaflets with anti-government statements in violation of the state of emergency was also cited as a ground for taking them in.Arrested DU teacher Golam Mawla said they convened a press conference

at Rajshahi City Press Club a day before the party's central press conference at the Engineers' Institute Auditorium in Dhaka. The DU teacher also named Mohiuddin Ahmed as their party's central leader.

Prior to arranging the press conference, the party activists distributed leaflets in the city-heart Saheb Bazaar area after Tarabi prayers on Sept 9. The party leaflets also carried anti-government

slogans.

The party undertook steps to spread and propagate its activities by holding the press conference in Rajshahi for the first time, sources said. But police forestalled the move.

In the leaflets the group also urged the Muslim Ummah to unite during the holy month of Ramadan and "regain the lost glory". They also made a call for what they said "toppling the government for restoration of Khilafat (caliphate)" .

Especially, Rajshahi's Bagmara area was a stronghold of Islamic militants under JMJB, the operations wing of JMB, and Sarbahara outlaws in the last few years.

Back then, JMB's second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai had launched a cleansing operation in 2004 against the outlaws in a bid to eliminate them. After the deadly drive, the terrorist activities were somehow under control.

Bangla Bhai and JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman and four other leaders were hanged in two judges' killing cases of Jhalakati last year.
