[ALOCHONA] Re: A nice interview of Engr. Sajeeb Wajed Joy - he has again proved that he is not the grandson only (family relation wise) - but also the bonafide political inheritor of the father of Bangalee nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Dear Alochoks

I wouldn't trust any man who lets his mother roam the highways and
byways of Bangladesh exposed to assasination, harassment, arrest and
insult while he enjoys a comfortable life back in the USA. I don't
know any Bangladeshi man - thank God - who would allow his mother to
go through this.....

It is pathetic.

You worshiped Sheikh Mujib and ruined his leadership. Every step he
took you found all of them right. Could not have the courage to
criticize him. Take lesson from the history and do not ruin possible
political caeer of this young man.

Re: [mukto-mona] Baba Saheb Ambedkar: Why Go For Conversion?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49962

Once a study was made in the State of Maharashtra, in the British Period, on
what Castes were serving which jobs. The researchers were surprised to find
out that the Chitpaban Brahmins(Highest subcaste among the Brahmins in the
State) did most of the lowest cadre of odd jobs. Now, if one believes in
what is written in Geeta, one would conclude that they belonged to the
lowest class.

The idea of compensation is unpracticeable. If every barkandaj demands
compensation calculated on the salary of a General, the ensuing chaos would
be unthinkable. There is nothing called injustice in history. Society is a
juggernaut, pulled by teeming millions, and the cream is consumed by
privileged few. Nothing is more wrong than the concept that all men are
born equal. Nothing, however, is said about women. Egalitarian societies
have created even more unequal species. Please study George Orwell to get a
flavour of it.

[mukto-mona] Re: Saudi cleric's fatwa on 'immoral' TV--comment on

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49957

It takes a particular amount of gall for someone who espouses murder to
whine about what he describes as "venom" directed against him. Mustafizur Rahman is simply a two bit hypocrite who lacks as much as an iota of restraint in jumping with glee at a call by a religious thug to kill magicians and whoever else he finds "immoral" in television, the definition of "immorality" being something that Rahman applauds from the rooftops. But when his hypocrisy is called, he must whine and beg for support from those whom he has been trying to deceive.

This is the mark of a religious fundamentalist and a murderous one at
that. Yes, my definition of Rahman as someone who invites people to murder those whom he considers "immoral" as "human trash," is completely appropriate.

[mukto-mona] For Dr Biplab Pal

I thought I would express my reservations about Dr Biplab Pal's perception about the $700 billion bail out for Lehman Brothers as 'socialism' which too is straightaway lifted, not from Dr Pal's brainwaves. Among the first to dish out this stupid etymology is Martin - Walker's World: Paulson, American Lenin (http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Walkers_World_Paulson_American_Lenin_999.html). He wrote :"America's Lenin will have soaked the long-suffering taxpayer all over again, and the liabilities of the American state will soar beyond $10 trillion.Who knows? But as Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama grapple for the presidency, their putative powers would seem to pale beside the authority and the consequences of the man who really runs the country, America's Lenin, Hank Paulson."
To me, it looked like a puerile way of campaigning for McCann.

Dr Pal ought to have differentiated between Fabian Socialism and Scientific Socialism which was atleast partially successful. Take the success of full employment within 15 years defying the Great Depression. Remember H G Wells' impression after meeting Lenin. There were failures during the Stalin period which - Paul Sweezy being the first to note, durinh Stalin era, paved the way for capitalism ( the boot was not really on Khruschev's leg). Nationalisation of sick industries and keeping them sick is just Fabian Socialism. Dr Pal, being a scientist (he often claims, within his rights), is expected to have read treatises of G K Shirokov, particularly Industrialisation of India and Industrialisation of Developing Countries, in which differentiation between two variants of socialism is clearly defined. There are several other Soviet works, let alone Maurice Dobb's.

Let me quote from a sharp analysis of the current US (read global) financial crisis by Sam Webb, national chair, CP of USA, a very small political entity but significant in terms of political analysis -http://cpusa.org/article/articleview/987/1/44/

Nothing to do with socialism

"This is not "socialism for the rich," as some have suggested. Socialist measures would thoroughly clean up and stabilize the financial system to be sure, but a socialist-led government would also place the good as well as the bad assets of the responsible parties (commercial and investment banks, private equity firms, and hedge funds) into the hands of a public democratically run authority. It would turn the Federal Reserve Bank, which during the Greenspan era was one of the main architects and cheerleaders of bubble economics (hi-tech, stock market and, its latest version, housing) into a publicly controlled institution. And it would bring those responsible to trial and penalize them appropriately, if convicted."

Re: [mukto-mona] Baba Saheb Ambedkar: Why Go For Conversion?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49946

I agree with Professor Kamal Das that if it is OK to take the advantage of a heinous system, it should be also OK to face the flip side of it. However, there should be a time period during which the historically deprived classes of people in any system should be compensated for their historical deprivation. And that should not be called "taking advantage."

The statements of "Had the Caste system not existed, there would be no Mandal Commission, and the share of jobs would not be favoured towards the lower castes." and  "Without the caste quota, most of these great men would not come to lime light at all." sound very much like "if there was no slavery, there would be no affirmative action." To me, all these statements are wrong, sort of justifying injustices in the history of mankind.

Again, I would support compensation for historical deprivation over a limited period of time, in which the heinous system of the drprivation (such as caste system and slavery) should be totally demolished. As for India, I think the caste system is far from demolished. Now the question is, in this chicken and egg game of caste system and quota, what comes first for demolition? For now, let me leave it to Professor Das and others in this forum to answer/discuss.

[ALOCHONA] Writing from Dr. Fakhrudding Ahmed from 2005

Dear Alochoks,

I found this gem of a piece written by our honorable Chief Advisor, Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed from 2005. In this letter he talks about his college days and how to build a first-class educational institution.

Regardless of what happens with our politics, we have been blessed, even if for a short time, to have such a distinguished and thoughtful person as our nation's leader.

Enjoy!

- Raheem

Letter From America
Anatomy of a first-class school

While the Rhodes Scholars, the English-speaking world's cream of the crop, held their Reunion in mid-July at the University of Pennsylvania, the Bangladeshi version of "cream of the crop," the former students of "East Pakistan" (now Faujderhat ) Cadet College, held their Third North American Reunion on July 30, in New York City. Coincidently, the only two "East Pakistanis" to win Pakistan's lone annual Rhodes scholarship (1970 and 1971) were students of Faujderhat Cadet College. The writer was fortunate to be the first. The chief guest at the Reunion was the college's former English teacher, Mr. A. T. M. Nasir Chowdhury, of the illustrious Chowdhury family of Noakhali that also boasts of Kabir Chowdhury, the late Munier Chowdhury, and Pakistan's Col. (Retired) Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury. Faujderhat Cadet College is an example of how to establish an excellent school in Bangladesh.

Faujderhat Cadet College was founded in 1958 by the late Pakistani President Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan, for the express purpose of supplying Pakistan's armed forces with "East Pakistani" officers. The real founder of the college is the remarkable New Zealander, the late Colonel William Maurice Brown. Colonel Brown's credentials were outstanding. He was a Squadron Leader, recipient of Britain's Order of the British Empire (OBE), observer (Extraordinary) of the United Nations, New Zealand government minister, mountain climber, shooter, boxer, graduate of King's College, Cambridge, and teacher and administrator par excellence. Starting with the planning and construction of the infrastructure, through the selection of the very best students and faculty, to the setting of the glorious house traditions that persists to this day, Col. Brown is synonymous with cadet colleges in Bangladesh.

The prerequisite for an excellent school is three basic ingredients -- excellent students, excellent teachers, and an excellent administration under a dynamic principal. My class (VII) of 1959 was selected from all over Bangladesh. Although a disproportionate number of students were from Dhaka and Chittagong, the rest of the country was well represented. I was from Feni. We had students from Bhola, Barisal, Khulna, Jessore, Bheramara, Parbatipur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet. Our best student, Adnan, was from Bhairab Bazaar and our second best student, Mushfique, from Ghorashal, Dhaka. Only one out of the five to place within the first ten (including the first three) in Dhaka Board's 1963 SSC Humanities examination was from Dhaka, everyone else was from rural areas or mofussil towns. Thanks to the foundation laid by Col. Brown, Faujderhat Cadet College has so far produced famous professors, Rhodes Scholars, head of the army in Bangladesh, top civil servants, top journalists, actors, national record holders in track, top industrialists and philanthropists, members of the parliament, and a Foreign Minister.

Col. Brown hired excellent native teachers, many of whom were first class honours and masters graduates of Dhaka University, such as, Mr. A. T. M. Nasir Chowdhury, Mr. Abul Kasem, Mr. Nazrul Islam, the late Dr. Badrul Millat, the late Kazi Azizur Rahman, Dr. Sirajul Islam, Dr. Selim, Mr. Bokiatullah, Mr. Salimullah. Mr. Haroonur Rashid, Mr. Abul Ashraf Noor, Mr. Ashraf, Mr. Wahiduzzaman, Mr. Abul Hasan, Mr. Kazmi and Dr. Anisur Rahman. An exceptionally-gifted and visionary principal, Col. Brown attracted British teachers like a magnet. The first two were Mr. S. L. Croft who taught English, and Mr. O. N. Bishop, an excellent teacher, who taught science. Later, Mr. Watson and Mr. Harry Shutt (who helped stage "Julius Caesar" in 1964) taught English, and Mr. Macbeth, another excellent teacher, taught physics. In addition, there were on campus several British Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) boys, who were taking a year off before going to college. The VSOs were closer to our age and lived in the houses with us. Blessed with such stellar and inspiring faculty, failure was not an option.

Then there was the extracurricular component. We played football, cricket, rugby, hockey, basketball, boxing, swimming, gymnastics and track and field. An avid rugby fan, Col. Brown desperately attempted to make us rugger players, with limited success.

While the inter-house contests brought out intense rivalries, the only outsiders we played were the Britishers of the Chittagong Club, in cricket and rugby. Later, a few Pakistani school teams played us in football. Every autumn we had the steeplechase run, which the student body hated; although a few like the writer did not mind because they did well. Col. Brown would use his enormous clout to bring famous sports personalities to the college. Pakistan's Olympic gold medal-winning hockey team visited in 1960 and presented the college the hockey stick with which the winning goal was scored. In 1962, during the rest day of the Dhaka Test against Pakistan, the English Test Cricket team visited and gave us lessons in bowling and batting. Col. Brown insisted that students learn and play all the games, "so that you can enjoy watching when your playing days are over." To top it all, we had the Outward Bound and Adventure Training Camp, a wilderness survival camp, on the Rangamati Lake, every year, under the tutelage of Mr. MacGregor and the VSO boys. Students who underwent the full cadet college training, could not remain bookworms and had to become all-rounders, just as Col. Brown had envisioned.

Culturally, Saturday evenings were set aside for watching documentaries supplied by the British Council, Dhaka. Occasionally, Shakespearean films such as, Laurence Olivier's "Hamlet" and "Richard III" were screened, as were British feature films such as, David Lean's "Great Expectations," Alec Guinness's "Kind Hearts and Coronets," and Kenneth Moore's classic "A Night to Remember." American movies were never shown and Col Brown frowned upon American expressions such as "OK!" We never had an American teacher! Once in a blue moon, Col. Brown would take us to Chittagong's Ujala Cinema Hall to watch Hollywood blockbusters such as Gregory Peck's "Guns of Navarone." Touring British Shakespeare companies (a la Merchant-Ivory film "Shakespearewala") visited occasionally and put on acts from Shakespearean plays. Col. Brown taught us some gentlemanly etiquette: "When eating, do not put your knife in your mouth," (just as Herbert teaches Pip in "Great Expectations") and "When you shake hands with a man, look him in the eye and give him a firm handshake; be gentle with a lady!" Col. Brown trained his boys to be socially savvy men of the world.

Overall, Col. Brown's moulded his students in his own image and through his guidance made them citizens of the world. Stationed in the tiny village of Faujderhat, we did not simply imagine the outside world, we lived in it. When a devastating cyclone and tidal bore hit coastal Chittagong in the autumn of 1960, Col. Brown suspended class for a week and made us help reconstruct the houses of the poor in the neighbouring villages, earning profuse praise from the press and "East Pakistan" Governor Azam Khan. When John Glenn completed the orbiting of the earth in 1962, Col. Brown informed us. When President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 and Sir Winston Churchill died in January 1965 we observed two minutes of silence for them. In February 1964, Col. Brown sent us the wonderful news, "Cassius Clay has knocked out Sonny Liston!" We may have been living in Faujderhat, but we were tuned to the world. We were trained not only in the best tradition of Bangladesh, but also in the best of tradition of the British public schools. Col. Brown made us gentlemen fit for the world.

There was only one cadet college in Bangladesh during our time. Now there are several. Since the cadet colleges have become regional, the caliber of the student body has diminished. But, we still have good students. The quality of administration and teachers is a concern. The principal has to a person with charisma and a vision. I do not know the quality of the principals we have today; I don't know how they measure up to Col. Brown. Is the current Faujderhat Cadet College attractive enough for visionary foreigners like Col. Brown to take the plunge? Why not? This is an age globalisation. We should be attracting talent from all over the world.

Many of the brightest Bangladeshi students now study in excellent Indian schools. Why not the reverse? If we regain our past glory, students from India and neighbouring countries will be coming to Faujderhat Cadet College to study. We should not be insular. And we must make sure we set aside certain number of seats for foreigners. If Col. Brown and our former teachers were there today, we would be pulling in foreign students and teachers by the planeloads.

A few weeks ago, there was an article in The New York Times about Dhaka's Bashundhara, the largest inner city mall in South Asia. The reporter interviewed the visitors at the mall, and every man and woman said that Banshundhara was possible because it was a private enterprise; if the government was involved, it would never have been constructed.

So, how does the college get back to its glory days? Simple, really. Make Faujderhat Cadet College a private institution. Make it a global institution. Nestled between the Bay of Bengal and the hills two miles inland, Faujderhat Cadet College's setting is idyllic. With land and sea breezes, the weather is excellent. It is connected by road, sea, railroad, and air, not only with the rest of Bangladesh, but also with the rest of the world. If foreigners were attracted to Faujderhat fifty years ago, they will find it far more agreeable today. The college should not only recruit the cream of the crop from Bangladesh, it should also be welcoming foreign students. It must be made attractive to foreign faculty. If in seven short years (1958-65) Col.

Brown's uncompromising genius could transform a fledgling rural school in Bangladesh into one of the finest educational institutions in the Indian subcontinent, surely the least we can do to honour his legacy is to take the college back to its glory days.

Iran: Death penalty for man accused of homosexuality

Tehran, 23 Sept. (AKI) - Nemat Safavi, arrested almost three years ago at the age of 16, has been condemned to death by a court in Ardebil, in the northwest Iranian Azerbaijan region.

Nemat has not killed anyone, stolen anything or even carried out any political activism.

Nemat has been accused of having homosexual relations. While that was not stated during the court case, he was accused of "sexual relations that were not admitted".

A year ago, on a visit to Colombia University in New York, Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said "there were no homosexuals" in Iran in response to a question from a student.

[mukto-mona] Women are in better condition in India: Taslima

Women are in better condition in India: Taslima

New Delhi, September 23: Controversial writer Taslima Nasreen, who has avoided public glare for long, made an appearance at a function in New Delhi where she said women are in better condition in India than their counterparts in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Taslima Nasreen said women are oppressed across the globe.

"But the degree of oppression varies from region to region and country to country. Women face various types of oppression due to social and religious factors," she said.

"I think women are oppressed everywhere. But in India they are far better off than women in Pakistan and Bangladesh," Nasreen said.

[ALOCHONA] Re: [khabor.com] AWL & BNP will be the butter and Bread for Banglades

Dear Mr. Mithu

It is a good proposal that in the polluted political culture we desperately need new blood with right vision and absolute PATRIOTISM.

But the tragedy is that none of the political parties BAL & BNP care for this. There is no such planing or any attempt given in the past.

Both the Begums are in the process of grooming  their Prince's to take over their throne. They are just following age old Indo-pak sub continent's  culture of  politics of  hereditary. That is the reason there is no inclusion any new faces other than the offshoots/siblings.

It is not only Hasina is Kaney Khato it appears Khaldea as well as they do not hear or sense  the demand and sentiments, feelings ,need , hopes and aspiraion of the general people (except the pass chata dalals).

I am urging AWL to include new blood in the system which make them more credible to lead Bangladesh in future.  Word "Change"  needs to bring into their head if AWl wants to be power in future.

I hope that all parties put new blood in the political system to bring this country the appropriate changes that are required for better future.

Dear All,

It seems to me that my prediction is correct again and again, and AWL will be in power in Bangladesh.  I just like to point out that it does not matter who wins but what does matter is how the winner runs the country.

I hope that AWL will able to run Bangladesh in constructive way with introducing new educated and competent blood into the system by providing nomination in the upcoming election.  I also believe that AWL can do a good job adopting new policies which will help 150 million people, not just few millionaires in the country.

We should support whoever wins in the next election.  This is the time to rally for Bangladesh in social, economic and education development.

Dear All,

I still believe that AWL will be in power if they abandon Lati and Boida mentality and work to help under developed country like Bangladesh.  I also believe that we need to be united around who ever win in the election in December 2008 for the sake of the country and her development.

Too much time has been spent on bickering and time is running out.

All,

Many of you might think that what the hack I am talking about,  or am  I taking any side?   This is my personal analysis after all the indications that are coming from Bangladesh.  People in Bangladesh have little option/choice but putting AWL in power in the next election.  People has lost confidence in BNP leadership what they have seen mountain of corruption particularly in last 5 years,  maybe earth has been shaken by their amount of corruption (for one case TK 50 Crore bribery,  this might be placed in world history).

AWL is not any different when we talk about corruption,  we can argue they did little corruption since they were in power for only 5 years.  Present situation is in favor of AWL if they have brain and they can use it properly.

Advice for AWL:

1) I hope that AWL will participate in the MP election without Hasina and they can win without Hasina in the next general election.  I predict that AWL will release Hasina from jail under amnesty even if she is convicted.

2)  AWL should bring new blood in their party providing nomination in various areas who will able to bring new thing in the table for Bangladesh. Atl east 25% of AWL candidates should be new energetic, educated,  understand international politics and economy to move this country forward.

3) Former and Current AWL supporters should move their attitude from Jihadist to liberal.  What I mean by Jihadist is that most of them can not think outside of the box and they can not take criticism from others.  Keep in mind that this is a power sharing situation in Bangladesh,  nobody is taking any food from your plate,  so take it easy,  have passions, respect others for their opinion,  be open minded to listen and take good things from others.

5) Once AWL is in power,  I hope that they will not spend next 5 years talking and working on who is the father of nation and who is not,  who is Rajakar and who is not,  let others branch of Bnagladesh Govt to take these issues as deemed necessary,  think ahead for Bangladesh, not just past. AWL should not start changing names of streets, airport etc, to Bonhgobondhu SK Mujib after they are in power again.  There are many real issues in Bangladesh like creating more jobs,  poverty reduction, increase the buying power of people, expand export industries,  increase electricity production,  drill more oil wells in bay of Bengal, build infrastructure etc.  I can go on and on...

5) AWL should not reverse all the CTG policies for their benefit and AWL shoul keep going with corruption drive if AWL really care about Bangladesh and its people. If AWL takes my advice, AWL can be a successful ruler in the next 5 years in Bangladesh to move this country forward.

Advice fro BNP:

1) I am predicting BNP will be divided in 2-3 parties.  I personally do not see any good leaders in BNP who can take the helm and move BNP forward.  I personally think that most of them shared corrupt money either a grass root leaders or ministers during BNP rule.  I personally lost confidence on them.

2) I do like former and current BNP supporters for their liberal stand and openness where they do not act like Jihadist, you know what I have meant.

3)  Khalida will be released from jail in February 2009 under AWL in power after she retire from the politics even if she is convicted on corruption (just my prediction)

Lets talk about honest candidates in the next MP election.  We argue that candidates should be honest but this is not enough for Bangladesh.  Next MP candidate have to be honest, educated, street smart too.  For example I can be the nicest man in the earth but if I do not help others.  My honesty will not bring any good to the society.

In Bangladesh politics, honesty will not bring any food on the table if she or he does not understand international politics,  does not know what is good or bad policies,  what is the  vision of Bangladesh,  if she or he does not know how it influence other countries to give Bangladesh share in WTO, WHO, UN, etc.  So the bottom line is that we need honest candidates but also we need street smart, visionary, and love for Bangladesh.  If I put a high school teacher in politics , he is honest but he may not able to bring any new things for Bangladesh.  I hope that I was able to clarify my points.

Anyway  I have laid down my prediction for the next 14 months and I hope this will help others.  Don't take personally if I offend any parties,  this is just pure prediction and advice for Bangladesh.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Marriott Bombing: `Pakistan's 9/11'?

Pakistan is now eating the fruits from the trees that it itself planted long time ago and nurtured all along with so much plan and care but without any thought.  For its blatant carelessness and disregard to civilized standards, sub-continental countries are bleeding and facing a huge monster with potential global reach.

Although the number of casualties, around 60, was far below the over 150 killed in the attack on late former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's welcome procession of October 18 last year, this attack had greater symbolic significance.
>
> Many foreigners patronize the five-storey, 290-room hotel that was also reportedly being used for a covert operation by US Marines, who were seen unloading a US Embassy truckload of steel boxes the night of September 17 -- the day Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani met US Admiral Mike Mullen in Islamabad and convinced him to cease America's military incursions into Pakistan.
>
> The Marriott's physical proximity to the country's power centres places it in a high-security area near the Parliament, Supreme Court, Presidency and Diplomatic Enclave that houses many foreign missions, including the American, British, and Indian, close to several television and radio stations. Although most casualties were Pakistani – security guards and drivers – the dozen foreigners killed included American, German and Vietnamese citizens, besides the Czech Ambassador.
>
> The attack was symbolically timed. It overshadowed the newly elected President's maiden address to the joint parliamentary session of the National Assembly (elected representatives of the federal parliament) and the Senate (upper house) hours earlier. Beefed up security ahead of the address is believed to have deflected the attack from the National Assembly, which may have been its original target.

>
> No one has claimed responsibility but the attack is assumed to be work of Pakistani Taliban (closely allied with Al-Qaeda) who have strongholds in the country's north-west bordering Afghanistan. The American attack on this area on September 3 barely two days after Pakistan's President took oath and subsequent such strikes generated great resentment. However, Pakistan's threat of retaliation against these incursions has little meaning given America's military might, and Pakistan's client state status and heavy dependence on the US. And yet there are plenty of emotionally charged up people here who are eager to fight America.
>
> These American strikes, apparently driven by the Bush administration's need to boost the Republicans before the upcoming elections, illustrate American highhandedness and shortsightedness as they undermine Pakistani democracy which many see as the only hope for winning this war.
>
> This nascent democracy is immeasurably threatened by the Taliban and Al-Qaeda elements on Pakistan's western borders and within its heartland. Pakistan reluctantly and half-heartedly abandoned its Taliban allies in post-9/11 Afghanistan, as they were successors of the Mujahideen it supported in America's war against Communist Russia. After September 11, 2001, the American attack on Afghanistan drove Taliban elements across the border into Pakistan's north- western tribal areas where they have ethnic, linguistic and historic ties. Their Al Qaeda friends, who have developed ties here through matrimony and a common enemy (America), joined them.
>
> The Pervez Musharraf-led military regime heading Pakistan at the time aligned itself with America without taking the Pakistani people or politicians into confidence. It is no coincidence that Pakistan experienced its first suicide bombing in 2002. The new government elected in the February 2008 elections inherited a war largely perceived as `America's war'.
>
> The government must correct this perception -- Al Qaeda and the Taliban pose a threat not just to the US and Afghanistan but also to Pakistan as a nation, and to any democratic system. It must ensure that all elements of the state apparatus follow this policy. A military-only option is clearly not the answer: there must be a political roadmap. That is why it is imperative for a political government to be in place that represents the aspirations of the people.
>
> The electorate made these aspirations clear during the general elections in February 2008: it wanted a change from past policies. This means rejecting military interference in politics and the politics of hate and religion, reining in the intelligence agencies (which have historic ties with the Mujahideen and their Taliban successors), and establishing peace with Pakistan's eastern and western neighbours India and Afghanistan.
>
> Currently, despite the difficulties, a widespread support for the democratic process is visible in Pakistan. In areas where the Pakistan government has enlisted local support against the Taliban, they have managed to push back the movement. Unfortunately, the heavy- handed military approach is undermining this support and boosting the Taliban. Since early August, pushed by America, the Pakistan army has been bombing Bajaur, the northern-most tribal agency sandwiched between Afghanistan and the settled North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
>
> Some 300,000 people are estimated to have fled the fighting, taking refuge in inadequate relief camps around the cities of Mardan and Peshawar. According to the lawyer and television talk show host Ayesha Tammy Haq who recently visited these camps, the displaced people say the same thing: "They wanted to be a part of Pakistan and to be treated like Pakistanis with enforceable rights," she wrote in a newspaper column.
>
> "They want to see development, schools, hospitals, jobs, better and safer futures for their children. None of them claimed to support the Taliban. In fact they said they did not want the system of governance that the Taliban had on offer, they want to see the Constitution of Pakistan apply to them not the (colonial) Frontier Crimes Regulation Act, they want to know that they have rights and a say in their futures."
