[ALOCHONA] Cricket: Rebels without a cause

Rebels without a cause?

FOURTEEN matches, 126 runs and six months after making his debut for the Tigers, Dhiman Ghosh handed in his retirement to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and defected to the Indian Cricket League (ICL).

It would have been, in and of itself, a matter of chagrin, but on September 14 there was hardly enough time for perspective.

Six more retirement letters reached the board in quick succession. Only one, by ex-captain Habibul Bashar, was somewhat expected. The others from Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, Forhad Reza and the aforementioned Ghosh came as something of a shock.

That Bashar would want to make the comfort of the ICL his retirement home cannot be held against him. But his comments certainly fly in the face of reason. "ICL never asked us to stop playing for our country," he said. "That is the main reason we joined. Perhaps people back home haven't understood properly."

Perhaps Bashar himself hasn't understood properly.

So the ICL has not asked him to stop playing, but he has anyway. What was then the reason for the resignation letter citing "improper structure" as the motive behind quitting?

For the others that explanation might have held sway. For Bashar, who is in his mid-thirties and has thrived under the direction of the very system he was now downplaying, it showcased the lack of commitment that characterised his last days as captain.

And what of the aforementioned Dhiman Ghosh, who was apparently frustrated at being in and out of the squad. Six months into his international career, a handy cheque from BCB in his pocket and the experience of three BCB-funded Australia trips later, the wicket-keeper decided he had given all he could to his country. Yes, the board had been very harsh with him.

Which brings us to Shahriar Nafees. Once touted as the future cricket captain, Nafees is an educated man (a relative novelty amongst his peers), a centurion against Australia, and a talented cricketer to boot. What drove him to retire from the national team?

The reasons he gave were atrocious. Frustration at being in and out of the side? Who is to blame for that but Nafees himself? If you keep under-performing, you have no place in the side. That's the rule. The time-honoured solution has usually been to put your head down and concentrate on getting your spot back. Nafees' conduct throughout the entire affair reeks not because it may be a shortcut to riches for the opener, but because he had the temerity to blame others for his own shortcomings.

The only person absolved of all blame should be Mohammad Rafique. A long and distinguished career in the game and years of service to Bangladesh cricket later, Rafique can go play wherever he likes. Bangladeshis all over will follow his fortunes closely.

Even worse than the mass exodus is the manner in which the players are subsequently defending their actions. Hiding behind a façade of righteousness may get them sleep at night, but let's call a spade a spade. The going got tough for them, and they exited stage.

Of course the money was a sweetener, but then they weren't exactly short of that if the figures revealed by the board are anything to go by.

The mass migration towards the supposed greener fields of the ICL is not necessarily a display of "un-patriotism." But it does display a distinct lack of character, especially when combined with the manner in which it was done.

Let me point out here that the ICL is not a philanthropic, poorly-performing-nation-promoting organisation. It is the corporate plaything of a man trying to push the buttons of the organisation that did not grant him rights to a cricket series he believed he should have won on merit.

In short, our players are there because of blatant corporate marketing and the parent corporation's helplessness in the face of pressure from the powerful Indian cricket board. We may blame the BCB for being petty and draconian, but it is hard to argue that defecting to the ICL is a solution.

The ICL exists to promote the ZEE network. They do not care about the Bangladeshi players -- who are just there to provide a service and get paid in return. A service, one might add, whose intricacies they have learnt thanks to the government of Bangladesh's patronage through the BCB.

Playing for the BCB does not equate playing for Bangladesh. Many players do not play for their nations due to conflict with coaches and governing bodies. But many more shake aside those problems in order to represent their country -- for the honour and respect it brings. And others are even prepared to go that extra distance.

Wanting to graze on greener pastures is nothing to be ashamed of, nor is it wrong in and of itself. What was shameful though were the actions that preceded that move. A mass resignation to showcase your displeasure shows not far-sightedness but a lack of moral fibre and principle.

And doing that while giving up the chance to represent your nation for the interest of corporations and personal gain shows, in my opinion, un-patriotism. It displays a lack of the basic characteristics, which define an upstanding man. There are players in the pipeline who are not ready yet, but more committed than this lot.

We look forward to them.

[ALOCHONA] AL: HBM Iqbal embezzled Tk 8 crore Viqarunnisa Noon School

Viqarunnisa Fund Embezzlement

Iqbal told to pay Tk 8cr to school

Courtesy Daily Star 14/10/08

A Dhaka court in a verdict of a law suit yesterday ordered former Awami League (AL) lawmaker and ex-chairman of Viqarunnisa University Foundation HBM Iqbal and seven others to pay Tk 8.09 crore to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College by October 31.

Tk 6 crore was transferred to Viqarunnisa University Foundation fund from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College fund but the money was not returned.

On April 10, 2004, the then acting principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College Royena Hossain filed the law suit with District and Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka for the return of the Tk 6 crore.

The other defendants of the law suit are Abdus Sattar, representative of Viqarunnisa University Foundation, former principal of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College Hamida Ali, Humayun Kabir Khan, AKM Firoz, Engineer Motiar Rahman, Rakibul Hossain Rumi and Engineer Prasanta Kumar Biswas. All the defendants are ex-members of the board of directors of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College. Another defendant is Premier Bank Ltd, Gulshan Branch.

Special Joint District Judge Foujul Azim of the Environment Court delivered the judgment.

In the verdict, the judge said if they fail to pay the money, defendant Premier Bank Ltd Gulshan Branch will transfer the decreed money to the plaintiff from the account of defendant Abdus Sattar between November 1 and 15.

The judge also directed authorities concerned to cancel sale of properties of the school that took place on May 12, 2001 and on June 28, 2001.

IRREGULARITIES
In the complaint, Royena Hossain mentioned that the then board of directors illegally and misusing their power transferred a huge amount of money and properties to Viqarunnisa University Foundation.

She appealed to the education ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to probe the irregularities of the foundation.

Investigating the matter, the education ministry and the UGC found facts in the allegations and cancelled the approval of Viqarunnisa University on November 27, 2002.

Following the cancellation, Abdus Sattar filed a writ petition with the High Court (HC) saying that he deposited Tk 5 crore in the name of University Reserved Fund at the Premier Bank Ltd, Gulshan Branch.

During a meeting of the managing committee on September 29, 1998, Iqbal and eight others drew Tk 5.01 crore from Viqarunnisa School and College fund in the name of loan for the Viqarunnisa University Fund, the complainant said.

The money was deposited in Abdus Sattar's account in DNS branch of Sonali Bank in October of 1998. Later, Iqbal and Hamida transferred Tk 5 crore to Sattar's another account in Premier Bank giving the excuse of better interest rates.

Hamida also took Tk 1 crore from Viqarunnisa School and College fund on October, 2001, and deposited in Sattar's Premier Bank account.

Sattar, Iqbal, Hamida and five other defendants did not return the Tk 6 crore to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College fund even though the approval of the Viqarunnisa University was cancelled.

Besides, the defendants gobbled up large amount of money by selling the school's playground. In 2001, Hamida sold 3.30 acres of land to Abdus Sattar for Tk 16 lakh, according to the plaintiff.

Sources said the market value of the property was around Tk 250 crore.

[ALOCHONA] The many wars in Afghanistan: How many can the US fight?

The many wars in Afghanistan: How many can the US fight?

by Moin Ansari

The tiff could end into a serious separation or even a divorce. President Bush wants to fix his legacy–calling all available CIA agents on the Afghan border to find and hunt down Osama Bin Laden. Any modicum of reality would tell him that the old fox would hide in areas where his chances of getting caught are minimal. It is not the Wild Wild West. The capture and death of one man will not make any difference to the complex situation in Afghanistan.

High drama in Beijing: Pakistani green vs. Indian Safron
Shooting starts in the Hindukush? When will the retreat begin?

There are three wars going on in Afghanistan. One is the anti-occu pation forces fighting ISAF and NATO. Pakistan considers this America's battle and provides support when asked to to prevent the supply of fighters.. This war is being carried on by the Taliban, Hiz e Islami and 36 other anti-occupation groups against NATO-ISAF and the US forces which are considered occupation forces.

I have deliberately avoided mentioning the Taliban, because the label is a narrow and unreal characterisation of the ethos that has shaped the insurgency in the Pashtun-dominated regions of Afghanistan. 'Taliban' is a convenient term, and makes the adversary identifiable, portraying him as anti-everything that stands for civilised and humane notions of social organisation. The portrayal is not entirely untrue in view of the conduct of the Taliban in the border regions of Pakistan or in Afghanistan during their regime. The Daily Times: Winning a losing game —Rasul Bakhsh Rais

The other war is the Indian sponsored war against Pakistan which is headed by RAW and the Indian Consulates from Afghanistan. Karzai is also part of this terror network against Pakistan. The US either has a blind eye on this or is fully complicit in supporting Bait Mehsud and the Tehrik e Taliban e Pakistan (TTP). In either case, the US has refused to attack the stronghold of Bait Mehsud. Inida is supporting the TTP and the BLA to put pressure on Pakistan to abandon the support for the Kashmiris.

The thir d war is the remnants of the so so called Al-Qaeda who are fighting in Afghanistan. There is symbiosis with the 38 insurgent groups and these militants have some common goals with the anti-occupation forces.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, America's top military official, made a hastily arranged visit to Pakistan on Tuesday for talks about recent incursions by American commandos based in neighboring Afghanistan.

The visit by the chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, came as an uproar continued to grow in Pakistan about the incursions, which have severely strained relations between the United States and Pakistan, its top Muslim ally in the war against terrorism. Admiral Mullen's visit coincided with conflicting accounts about a possible second American raid, as well as a warning by the Pakistan military that it would shoot at any foreign forces who crossed the border. New York Times

Pakistan has upped the ante. The US thought that Pakistan would stand down and allow the US full access so that it could cross the Pakistani border with impunity and fire at will at Pakistani targets. Pakistan has resisted this effort

ISLAMABAD — On the eve of a meeting with the top U.S. military commander, Pakistan upped the ante in its standoff over U.S. troop incursions, saying its soldiers had orders to open fire on American troops if they crossed from Afghanistan on raids.

A Pakistani military spokesman said Tuesday that the nation's troops have been ordered to open fire if U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan launched another raid inside Pakistan, raising the prospect of a clash between Pakistani and U.S. forces on the border. Pakistani military officials have repeatedly emphasized that they consider such incursions — made permissible for U.S. troops by secret orders issued by U.S. President George W. Bush in July — to be a violation of territorial sovereignty.

"No incursion will be tolerated anymore," said Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas, chief military spokesman. The prospect of allies fighting each other as they hunt down Islamist militants still appears remote, given the Pakistani government's desire to receive billions of dollars in aid from the U. S. But the repeated warnings against U.S. troop raids reflect the strong anger felt among Pakistan's senior ranks that the U.S. is overstepping its bounds with a close ally India attempts to threaten China from Ladakh & Northeast.

Pakistan's military resent these latest attacks because it believes a higher priority is to fight supporters of Baitullah Mehsud, a tribal commander in South Waziristan, whose supporters present a bigger threat to Pakistan. Pakistani aircraft continued Tuesday to bomb militant strongholds in the area of Bajur, killing nine militants. The government claims hundreds of militants have been killed in the Bajur campaign, which was launched in August.

A Pakistani military spokesman said the militants have constructed underground bunkers and, along with foreign fighters, are putting up stiff resistance.Pakistan in border warning to US: Pakistan has thousands of troops in the border region

Pakistan's army spokesman has made clear that its forces have been ordered to open fire if US troops launch another raid across the Afghan border. Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told The Associated Press that "no incursion is to be tolerated".
His remarks come a day after Pakistani troops were reported to have fired shots into the air to stop US troops crossing into South Waziristan.

Tension is rising in Pakistan over an increase in US attacks on the border. On Monday, there were reports of nine US helicopters landing on the Afghan side of the border and US troops attempting to cross into South Waziristan. The tribal region is one of the main areas from which Islamist militants launch attacks into Afghanistan.

Locals said seven US helicopter gunships and two troop-carrying Chinook helicopters landed in the Afghan province of Paktika near the Zohba mountain range.US troops from the Chinooks then tried to cross the border. As they did so, Pakis tani paramilitary soldiers at a checkpoint opened fire into the air and the US troops decided not to continue forward, local Pakistani officials say.

Pakistan's military confirmed firing but denied that Pakistani troops were involved.
It emerged last week that US President George W Bush has in recent months authorised military raids against militants inside Pakistan without prior approval from Islamabad.
The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says there is a growing American conviction that Pakistan is either unwilling or unable to eliminate militant sanctuaries in its border area.
There have been a number of missile attacks aimed at militants in Pakistan territory in recent weeks.

Pakistan reacted with diplomatic fury when US helicopters landed troops in South Waziristan on 3 September. It was the first ground assault by US troops in Pakistan.
Locals in the Musa Nikeh area said American soldiers attacked a target with gunfire and bombs, and said women and children were among some 20 civilians who died in the attack.

On Monday, the tribesmen say they grabbed their guns and took up defensive positions after placing their women and children out of harm's way.Pakistan's army has warned that the aggressive US policy will widen the insurgency by uniting the tribesmen with the Taleban.

[mukto-mona] War Criminals of 1971: Time to Take Action

War Criminals of 1971: Time to Take Action Dr. Abdul Momen* It is highly misleading that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman government pardoned all the war criminals and he did nothing during his war ravaged reconstruction period. The fact shows otherwise. In fact, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman government started prosecuting the perpetrators of 'crime against humanity' or war criminals immediately after independence and he also passed the Collaborators Act (1972) and the International Crime Act of 1973 that barred re-entry of any collaborators to Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujib promulgated the Special Tribunal Order on January 24, 1972 (PO No 8 of 1972) after 14 days of his return from Pakistani jail to try those Pakistani collaborators/Razakers/Al-Badrs and other stooges of the Pakistan army. Under this order he arrested 37,000 collaborators amidst of strong opposition by left-leaning journalist like Enayetullah Khan [see his write-up titled 75 million Collaborators, the Holiday, 1972]. Out of those 37,000 as no grievous criminal charges were filed against 26,000, therefore they were pardoned and released in a general amnesty. However, nearly 800 cases were completed and given jail sentences. Another 11,000 were in jail including Nizami, Abbas Ali Khan of the Jamat-e-Islam Party (JI), and their prosecution was at various stages of completion. In addition, those that were involved in crime against humanity and against Bangladesh, they were denied of Bangladesh nationality and passport. On November 4, 1972 all religion-based politics were abolished as per sections 12 and 38 of the Bangladesh Constitution of 1972. Unfortunately, when General Ziaur Rahman, a valiant Mukti-judda emerged as a strong man in 1975, he abrogated the Collaborators Act and released all the prisoners including those that were sentenced. For political/ personal reasons he allowed religion-based parties to operate and started reinstating and rehabilitating them. No wonder, those who were guilty of crime against humanity and collaboration with enemy state (Pakistan) started returning from abroad especially Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and they were given Bangladesh citizenship and passport. Example, Golam Azam of the JI Party. On those days I was working with the Bangladesh government and many individuals and their relatives that had no Bangladesh passport approached us for consideration. However, once General Zia took over, all of them were issued Bangladesh passport or travel documents to return to Bangladesh. It is sad that few vested quarters including Abdul Mannan Bhuiya, the ousted BNP Secretary General and current Law Advisor Barrister Moinul Hussein are misleading the public and the nation by stating that Sheikh Mujib pardoned them or shifting the responsibility by blaming why they did not prosecute them. In fact, Sheikh Mujib started the prosecution and he pardoned only those that did not have criminal cases against them. He did not pardon those (Razakers, Al-badr or Al-Shams) that had criminal cases and those that committed crime against humanity or war criminals such as rape, murder, and the like. Thousands of criminals were in prison during his time; however, many were absconding abroad including Golam Azam, the leader of the JI party and they were involved in anti-state activities abroad. He did not get time to complete the prosecution because of abrupt massacre. After the massacre of Sheikh Mujib and his family plus his closed associates; Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed, Acting President Syed Nazrul Islam, Secretary General AHM Qamruzzaman and Home Minister Monsur Ali, the founders of independent and sovereign Bangladesh in 1975, one after another civil-military-technocratic or cantonment-based governments ruled the country basically till 1996. None of them initiated any action against the collaborators. Rather, they encouraged anti-liberation forces and assist in manipulating false stories in rewriting the liberation history of Bangladesh. [Even in recent days, instead of stating the fact that it is a section of Bangladesh army that assassinated its elected Presidents and created political vacuum by design, and institutionalize corruption in Bangladesh over the last many years, General Moeen U. Ahmed, the Army Chief engaged himself in disinformation campaign again and stated that politicians failed to recognize the national heroes and corrupted the country. Such further encouraged the JI leadership even to deny and question the liberation war of Bangladesh]. In 1996, when pro-people and pro-liberation government of Sheikh Hasina came to power after 21 years with marginal votes; it neither could reinstate the Collaborators Act nor could revive the original constitution of 1972. Secondly, it followed judicial process and rule of law and therefore, it did not set up any kangaroo court or special tribunal to prosecute the criminals. One can debate that as a weakness of the Hasina government or not. Therefore, it failed to punish the war criminals and the culprits. But that does not justify that the criminals of crime against humanity or war criminals should not face justice. It would be unfair if they are allowed to go free or untouched. Fortunately, now is an opportune moment to revive the clause that no religion-based political party can register or contest in Bangladesh election and those found guilty of crime against humanity to be fully prosecuted. Unless the criminals and murderers are fully prosecuted, you can neither establish rule of law nor can stop political killing in Bangladesh. More importantly, the International Crime Act of 1973 of Bangladesh is still active and Article 47, Section 3 of the Act allows trial of war criminals. Therefore, the military-backed government of Fakhruddin Ahmed that has started many essential reforms can try the war criminals and punish them provided it has the mindset and commitment. It is unfortunate that its Law Advisor is trying to guillotine the golden opportunity and shifting its responsibility with cheap slogans. Secondly, Islami activist S. A. Hannan, a retired bureaucrat following the JI party line of argument tried to mislead the public by stating that there was no genocide in East Pakistan in 1971. Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of an ethnic, religious or national group. While precise definition varies among genocide scholars, the legal definition of it is found in the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG). Article 2 of the CPPCG defines genocide as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."[1] In 1971 the Pakistan occupation army plus their collaborators like the Jamat-e-Islam, the Islami Chatra Sangho (currently renamed Islami Chatra Shibir) and their militant killing squads; the Al-Badr and the Al-Shams tried their utmost to apprehend and kill those that demand an independent Bangladesh. Since majority of Bengali speaking East Pakistanis (Sheikh Mujib got 167 out of 169 seats in East Pakistan) or ethnic group favored an independent Bangladesh, they waged a war with intent to destroy that ethnic group. The Pak army systematically opened fire on un-armed masses of Bengali ethnic group on the midnight of March 25th 1971 indiscriminately resulting which, as per various reports 19,000 to 25,000 Bengali ethnic people died on that dark night alone and over a period of 10 months, 3 million reportedly killed, 30 million were dislodged from their homes and 10 million had to take refuge in neighboring India due to cleansing operation, fear and repression. As per global ranking, Bangladesh genocide is second to that of Nazi genocide of Jews. In order to cripple the whole bangali nationalism and nationhood the Pak army in collaboration with the Jamat-e-Islam and few other such parties and their affiliates systematically and calculatedly murder the Bengali intellectuals, writers, doctors, journalists, educators and their political leadership. In addition, in order to cleanse the society of Hindu population, the Pak army and its collaborators calculatedly killed and/or uprooted them. No wonder, over 10 million East Pakistanis (out of 75 million) mostly Hindu minority took shelter in the neighboring India. When army captured me on April 20, 1971, they tested me whether I could recite kolema or Tauhid (the 1st pillar of Muslim faith) and then they checked whether I had my circumcision, a symbol of being Muslim in the subcontinent. In addition, when the army forced us to lead them in their operations, they repeatedly asked two questions; find Mukti (liberation fighter) and Hindu. If such are reported, they would immediately open their fire, weapons and mortars. Such is a testimony of cleansing of a religious group, a clear evidence of genocide.                                   Extracts from the DUJ report

Foreword

The Delhi Union of Journalists and its Ethics Council are concerned at the falling standards of reporting as evident in the manner in which the police operation at Batla House on September 19, 2008 was reported by various newspapers and TV channels in the Capital.

We wish to underline that accuracy in reporting facts is the first responsibility of the media. Where facts are disputed, the discrepancies should be pointed out and the sources questioned. Presenting several versions of incidents and using multiple sources of information is an inalienable part of credible reporting.

We also emphasise that uncovering the truth may not always be the job of the media. The media is not equipped to investigate and uncover the truth in severely complicated cases like the incident being examined in the report.

But presenting different facets of events as they emerge is part of the professional responsibility of the media.

In this report we have analysed the reporting of the Times of India, The Hindustan Times, The Hindu, The Indian Express (Delhi editions of September 20 and 21, 2008).  Among the Hindi newspapers we have examined Dainik Jagaran, Amar Ujala, Dainik Hindustan, Jansatta, Punjab Kesari and Rashtriya Sahara; the Urdu newspaper we looked at is Rashtriya Sahara.

We wish to make it clear that we hold no brief for either the police or the suspects, two of whom have been killed and several rounded up.  We are not passing a judgment on whether it was a planned encounter or a fake encounter or a police operation gone wrong. We do not know the truth. We are only examining the professional conduct of our co-professionals with a view to pointing out the casual manner in which serious issues have been handled right from the day of the serial bomb blasts in Delhi.

A research team of the DUJ decided to examine the way in which the print media reported the police operation on September 19, 2008, at L-18, Batla House, Jamia Nagar in Delhi in which two alleged terrorists and one inspector of the Special Cell of the Delhi Police were killed. We have attempted in this report to first state the facts as they were reported and then analyse the language employed and the views expressed while reporting and commenting on this highly sensitive and contentious incident.

Analysis of Newspaper Reports dated September 20, 2008

The facts first.

1. Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma of the Special Cell of the Delhi Police killed.

2. Two young boys, Atif Amin and Mohammed Sajid, killed.

3. Mohammed Saif arrested.

The rest of the facts regarding the police operation at L-18, Batla House, Jamia Nagar, Delhi on Sept. 19, 2008 are uncertain. Although the incident took place in the capital of India and all the newspapers and TV channels used the same source, the Police, even the basic facts are not in place. Every daily newspaper and television channel seems to have its own set of 'facts' and often these contradict each other. Accuracy seems to have been sacrificed in the rush to be first with the news and provide the more sensational coverage. Let us examine how the incident was reported in the Delhi editions of the dailies.

The Time of the Shootout:

The Hindustan Times and Dainik Jagran have given the time as 11 a.m. The Indian Express, quoting a resident, says the first shot was fired around 9.45 a.m. The Times of India report does not mention any time. Mail Today says it began at 11a.m. The Hindi Hindustan report would have us believe that it all began at 10.30 a.m. Amar Ujala says firing began around 10.45 a.m. and lasted till 11 a.m.

The Duration of the Shootout:

The Hindustan Times says the shootout lasted 15 minutes whereas its Hindi publication, Dainik Hindustan,  says it lasted 90 minutes. According to the TOI, the entire encounter took 25 minutes. Mail Today says the operation lasted 30 minutes. The Veer Arjun says the shootout lasted between 30 and 45 minutes. Rashtriya Sahara, Urdu, claims that the shooting lasted nearly two hours. Amar Ujala says the encounter lasted  1 hour and 15 minutes. Punjab Kesari claims that  the encounter lasted one hour.

Rounds fired:

According to the TOI, 25 rounds were fired by the police and 8 by the 'terrorists'. The Indian Express, the Hindu, Dainik Hindustan, Punjab Kesari and Rashtriya Sahara, Urdu say the police fired 22 rounds. They are all silent about the rounds fired by the suspects. Rashtriya Sahara, Hindi and Amar Ujala say the police fired 22 rounds and the 'terrorists' fired 8 rounds.

Interestingly, the Navbharat Times claims that both the police and the suspects were armed with AK 47s but did not use them!

'Explosive' stuff:

All the dailies reported the police claim that those shot at Batla House were terrorists responsible for several bomb blasts.

The HT quoted Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal as saying that "explosives made by him (Atif – our clarification) and his team bore their signature – two detonators, wooden frame, ammonium nitrate and analog quartz clocks."

In the light of this claim, the list of explosives claimed to have been recovered from the flat occupied by the suspects is interesting.

Dainik Hindustan says one AK 47, two pistols, one computer and important papers were recovered.

Veer Arjun reports one AK 47, .30 bore pistols, cartridges and 21 country pistols were found.

Navbharat Times says one AK 47, two .30 imported pistols, 20 live cartridges, magazine, two laptops, mobile phones and other items were recovered.

Rashtriya Sahara, Hindi says police recovered one AK 47 and two .32 bore pistols, one computer and books.

Punjab Kesari says police found one AK 47, two pistols  and one computer.

Amar Ujala says the police  seized one AK 47, .30 bore revolver, two laptops, half a dozen mobiles and six pen drives.

None of the dailies report the recovery of any ammonium nitrate and analog quartz clocks. No question is asked about the recovery of these chemicals or equipment claimed to be part of the terrorist group's signature.

How many Policemen were there?

Indian Express reports that Sharma went there along with five officers.
Mail Today reports a 15-member team led by Sharma
Veer Arjun claims 50 personnel led by Sharma landed there.
NBT says a total number of 24 police personnel went there.
Amar Ujala reports that a 22-member police team cordoned off the area under the leadership of Sharma.

The TOI, HT, Jansatta, Dainik Jagran and The Hindu refrain from mentioning the number of policemen involved in the operation.

How many Bullets hit Sharma?

The TOI, IE, HT, Mail Today, The Hindu, Veer Arjun, Rashtriya Sahara, Hindi all say three bullets hit Sharma.

Navbharat Times says four bullets hit him.

Jansatta claims that five bullets hit him in the abdomen, thigh, left arm, upper part of the shoulder and right hip (Anchor story).

Rashtriya Sahara, Urdu reports four bullets hitting him, one each on shoulder, arm, back and right hip.

Rashtriya Sahara, Hindi claims that all the three bullets were taken out during an operation in Holy Family hospital

Amar Ujala also claims that bullets had been removed and quotes Dr. Rajesh Chawla to this effect. It says Dr Chawla was summoned from Apollo hospital. He reportedly told the paper that there was excessive bleeding because the bullets hit the lung and the lower part and after 'bullets had been removed',  it was felt that Sharma may survive.

Subsequently post-mortem reports quoted by some of the dailies said that Sharma had been hit by only two bullets and both bullets had exited the body. No bullets were removed from his body.

About Mohan Chand Sharma

Even in paying tributes to Inspector Sharma the papers have reported different facts.  HT says that he had "shot dead 75 criminals and terrorists." The TOI says he was "credited with the killing of 35 terrorists and the arrest of 80 others." The IE says that "Sharma's 'kill tally' stood at 75 criminals including 35 terrorists". The Hindu says he was instrumental in "neutralising 35 terrorists and arresting as many as 80 militants." It goes on to say he had 'gunned down 40 gangsters' and arrested '120' criminals. Amar Ujala reports that Sharma killed 35 terrorists and 40 gangsters, nabbed 80 terrorists and 129 gangsters. It says he was involved in 75 encounters.

[ALOCHONA] Jang - Musharraf’s farmhouse almost ready

Must be nice to get all this on a general's salary. Either that or he must be a whiz in the stock market.

Musharraf's farmhouse almost ready

Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Tariq Butt
Islamabad
http://thenews.jang.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=140885

Former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf's under-construction farmhouse in Islamabad's Chak Shehzad orchard scheme will be handed over to him early next month.

"The completion of the house, built on the five-acre farm, is now in final stages," Musharraf's architect Hammad Hussain, who is supervising the construction, told 'The News'.

However, he said even after its handing over to the former president considerable more time would be needed for him to shift because several things like buying and transportation of furniture, construction of servant quarters and any additional structure for security purposes and interior decoration would be required before his moving there.

Hammad Hussain believed that Musharraf was expected to shift to the farmhouse after Eidul Azha, meaning mid-December. The general slowdown of activities in the month of Ramazan somewhat delayed the completion of the premises, he said.

The young architect, who often meets the former president in connection with the construction of his house, always finds Musharraf in high morale. "I don't notice any change in his spirits and sense of humour," he said.

To a question, Hammad Hussain said that the former president was mostly spending his time in playing tennis, squash and bridge apart from his other activities.

Hammad Hussain said lots of people keep meeting Musharraf, who often has a very busy schedule. On Eidul Fitr, he said, he found retired and serving army men, politicians and many others greeting him at his Army House residence in Rawalpindi.

The former president has "highly lucrative" invitations to speak in the United States and some western countries, but he did not want to avail them for the time being as he was "extremely conscious" about his image that even his visit to America for this purpose would emit a very negative message about him. "People would start saying that Musharraf has fled the country. He is very mindful about such things," a source, having interaction with him, said.

Musharraf also has invitations to deliver lecture in some countries of the Middle East. He is likely to avail of some of them. His first foreign visit after his resignation as president of Pakistan on August 18 this year is likely to be one of these countries for speaking purpose.

The source said that the former president's stay would not be more than a few days. He said that Musharraf has no plan whatsoever to settle down abroad. "When he is conscious about having any longer stay in any foreign country, he will absolutely not leave Pakistan for good."

Musharraf's new home is spread over around 10,000 square feet covered area of the five-acre farm. It resembles with a Mediterranean house having Moroccan colours.

Hammad Hussain said that the Capital Development Authority by-laws were fully followed. Musharraf keeps visiting the under-construction house. The frequency of his visits increased after his exit from the Presidency.

As president, Musharraf went to the site on August 17 when he was faced with the toughest moments of his life and rule.

The farmhouse is bounded on its two sides by the similar estate, owned by Ghalib Nishtar, grandson of the Abdur Rab Nishtar, while there are roads on its other two sides. Its construction started in end-2006 and kept facing delays "because of the non-availability of the former president due to his official preoccupations."

Hammad Hussain confirmed that Musharraf's son Bilal continued to work in the United States while his daughter was in Karachi. The former president, his spouse, Begum Sehba and his mother, who are living in the Army House, will also be the occupants of the new residence.

[ALOCHONA] Must see video - Arranged Marriages & Bangla-Sylheti Migrants in London

Interesting but disturbing  video. It is free and about 62 minutes long. Saw it online this last weekend. Links provided below.

How Sylheti migrants in London are coping (or not coping) with, izzat, arranged marriages, first & second generation issues etc. .

Every Good Marriage Begins With Tears

Asia Pacific Premiere

UK 2006 / 62min.

Director Simon Chambers

Two Bangladeshi girls born and raised in London agree to allow their parents to choose their husbands for them.

The elder, Sahanara, quick-witted, coarse-mannered and the rebel of the family, banished from the family in her teens for being "too Western", has to swap her pink hot pants for a sari as she goes off to the airport to meet her new Bangladeshi husband.

The younger, Hushnara is more submissive, devout and accepting of her father's match with stoic dutifulness.

Simon Chambers is an old friend of the family and the family is welcoming of his decision to film the family. The film is intimate, surprisingly frank and revealing of British Muslim life not normally seen. The family regularly address him directly or ask his opinion during a domestic dispute, which he then gives in the voice-over.

Simon starts filming just before Sahanara's bridegroom arrives in Great Britain. At that point, everything still seems all right. But when Simon drops by a few months later, the household is in an upheaval. Sahanara has left her husband; found a job and a new boyfriend while Hushnara has doubts about her pending nuptials. Eventually, Chambers accompanies the family to Bangladesh for Hushnara's wedding, and to look for Sahanara, who has disappeared completely.

Feeling more like an independent dramatic feature film than a documentary, it is beguiling and captivating. It is a timely antidote to the current media preoccupation with Islamic religious fundamentalism, terrorism or "how badly they treat their women".

[mukto-mona] Upcoming conspiracies surrounding general election in Bangladesh

Dear Members,

Although the Chief Advisor and other members of the interim government are trying to ensure through their speeches that the general election will be held in December 2008 and power will be handed over to the elected representatives of people, doubts and fears are spreading due to some activities of the ruling quarter.  I tried to analyse the possible conspiracies and strategies of various players involved in influencing Bangladesh politics in my article published in Daily Naya Diganta and is available at the following link:

I will highly appreciate if you kindly share your views on this issue.

Best regards.
