WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50233 Contrary to what maulana wahiuddin says there is no need for reviving ijtihad today because jtihad is merely a dogmatic exercise. Rather, it is extremely important that the followers of Islam should be reeducated to live in diverse societies of modern days. Through ijtihad Muslims have been able to submerge themselves in their religious pit holes so far, reapplying the principles of Islam in accordance with the dogmas of Quran and Hadith thereby subjugating a huge population for a long time. In other words, ijtihad is a means to constantly propagandise Islamic thought and to thereby maintain its nasty grip on people. One aspect of the spread of Islam has to do with destroying non- Muslims. There were numerous different sorts of great free thinking idol worshippers in India, people who worshiped nature: trees, the moon, the sun, the stars. These were great intellectual people but Muslims had a set of committed missionaries who abolished many of these people and converted the rest to Islam. Muslims gained considerably more success through violence than Christian missionaries. The same trend still exist among indian muslims. One speech of Syed Muhammad Rashid Riza is an example of such ijtihadi insight. On closely examining the then prevailing conditions he well understood that the balance in pre-Partition India between Muslims and the non- Muslim majority was because of the existence of a third party—the British. He also knew that when this third party withdrew, the balance would be suddenly destroyed, after which muslims will have great opportunities. On the basis of this insight, Sayyed Rashid Riza advised Indian Muslim leaders to be active in the field of dawah or converting others to the faith of Islam. It is now time to abandon these nasty religious activities. tistarbahe ------------------------------------

Fear and fundamentalism in India | In the Indian state of Orissa, Chris Morris finds communities in shock following a wave of anti-Christian violence, which has forced thousands to flee. Two hundred churches and prayer houses have been destroyed | They call Bhubaneshwar India's temple city. Over two millennia, thousands of intricately carved Hindu temples have been constructed in Orissa's state capital. Many of them still stand testimony to the faith of the people. They are often places of serenity and calm. But travel for five hours into the interior, into the lush green hills of central Orissa, and Hinduism takes on a new and more menacing form. In the remote district of Khandamal, fundamentalists have been at work. Militant groups who say they speak in the name of Hinduism, have been burning Bibles and killing Christians. Mob rule Horror stories have emerged from the worst anti-Christian pogroms since Indian independence. At one of the many relief camps dotted around the region, I was told of a man named Parikkit Nayak, who escaped from the initial surge of violence. | Across Khandamal tens of thousands of Christians are now living in fear | Two days later as he tried to flee from his village with his wife and two children, he was caught by a local mob. They tied a rope around his neck and dragged him along the ground for 400m (1,312ft). Bruised and battered, he was then paraded through the village like an animal and asked if he would renounce Christianity. When he said no, he was cut to pieces with knives, while his young family had to look on. Deserted villages Across Khandamal tens of thousands of Christians are now living in fear. For many, returning to their homes is too dangerous | Many have moved into camps set up by the government, with armed guards at the gate. Others are living in the shadows, spending the nights hidden in the forest before venturing back to deserted villages during the day. In one such village, littered with empty, burnt-out houses, we were speaking to a nervous elderly woman, when the sound of a conch shell being blown echoed through the trees. "They're coming," she cried. "You must leave now." She pushed us away, picked up the folds of her dirty blue sari, and ran for her life. Intimidation and terror For others, returning to their village is still too dangerous. I met a young priest named Manoj, now in temporary exile, who related the story of his father. "They came to our house and held an axe to his neck. 'If you stay Christian', he was told, 'you will be killed.' He was taken to a local temple and forced to convert." "To live in this world today," Manoj's father relates in a letter smuggled out of his village, "we have to live as Hindus." | Hindu activists talk of retaliation for a Christian campaign to convert poor Hindu villagers | Part of this organised campaign of intimidation and terror has been the destruction of local churches and prayer houses. More than 200 have been attacked and burnt. Some of them now have saffron Hindu flags flying above desecrated altars and broken roofs. A sign of conquest. 'Retaliation' As we walked through one abandoned house, a Hindu couple from the neighbouring village appeared. Christians make up 2.5% of India's 1.1 billion population | There was no hostility here, only a sense of regret as they looked at half-burnt photographs in broken frames - the faces of the people who used to live here. "There's not much we can do to help, but we never had any problem with them," the woman said. "This was the work of extremists." Why is it happening? As ever, it depends on who you ask. Hindu activists talk of retaliation for a Christian "campaign" to convert poor Hindu villagers. Others speak of complex caste and tribal rivalries in one of India's most backward and isolated places. "The cake has several layers," says the government representative in Khandamal, Kishan Kumar. "There's a tribal layer, and there's a layer of economic rivalry. But the icing on top of the cake is organised religious violence. And that's what we've seen here." Belatedly, the central government has acted against the instigators. Hundreds of people have been arrested, and there have been calls for a nationwide ban on groups such as the Bajrang Dal, the self-styled warriors of militant Hindu nationalism. There is a strong suspicion that the brutality in Khandamal, and a series of attacks against churches elsewhere in India, is part of a deliberate political plan to stoke communal tensions before a general election next year. The immediate trigger for the violence may have been the murder of a controversial Hindu leader, for which Maoist rebels have claimed responsibility. But the finger of blame was pointed at the Christian community and the mobs unleashed their savage response. So Khandamal is now watching and waiting, awash with stories and people who want to tell them. In hiding Late at night we sat with one young woman who has been hidden for her own protection. Some Hindus have also been attacked if they have Christian relatives | Even though she herself is a Hindu, she was gang-raped by her grandparents' neighbours because her uncle refused to renounce his Christian beliefs. As a nun held her by the hand, she choked back tears and looked up. "Why did they do this to me?" she asked. "For what?" "They're threatening to kill all of us - me, my uncle, my brothers." "But we won't lie about it. Even if they throw money at our feet, we will continue to tell the truth." | |

Hugo Chavez celebrates 'comrade' George W Bush's conversion to socialism following financial crisis Socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez mocked George W. Bush as a "comrade" saying the US president was a left-winger for his lifeline to major banks. Last Updated: 8:35AM BST 16 Oct 2008 Chavez, who describes capitalism as evil, ridiculed Mr Bush for his plan to buy stocks in American banks despite his widespread criticism of Venezuelan nationalisations. "Bush is to the left of me now," Mr Chavez told an audience at a debate on the benefits of socialism. "Comrade Bush announced he will buy shares in private banks." Chavez, who has insulted Mr Bush in the past as a drunkard or the devil, accused him of parroting the words of his aides without understanding the new policies that rely on heavy state intervention. "I am convinced he has got no idea what's going on," said Mr Chavez, who has nationalised large parts of the Venezuelan economy in recent years and is in negotiations to take over a Spanish bank. The Bush administration, which has promoted free-market policies throughout Latin America, resisted taking shares in banks for weeks. But, faced with a spiralling financial crisis, it reversed course this week with a multi-billion dollar plan. Mr Chavez, who the US labels an autocrat, is a vocal critic of Mr Bush. Despite the ideological differences between the two governments and the diplomatic sparring that led weeks ago to the countries expelling each other's ambassador, Venezuela remains a major oil supplier to the United States. | __._,_.___ ***************************************** Sign the Petition : Release the Arrested University Teachers Immediately : An Appeal to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh http://www.mukto-mona.com/human_rights/university_teachers_arrest.htm ***************************************** Daily Star publishes an interview with Mukto-Mona http://www.mukto-mona.com/news/daily_star/daily_star_MM.pdf ***************************************** MM site is blocked in Islamic countries such as UAE. The Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain's first international conference on Political Islam, Sharia Law and Civil Society held at Conway Hall on October 10 was a resounding success. Nearly 300 people came together to discuss issues ranging from apostasy, the freedom to criticise and renounce religion, Sharia law and civil society and creationism, faith schools and religious education. Held on the International Day against the Death Penalty, the conference was a stark reminder of the many killed or facing execution for apostasy in countries ruled by Islamic laws. You can see the report, complete film footage and photographs of the conference by clicking on the first available internal link on the press releases section of CEMB's website: http://www.ex-muslim.org.uk/indexPressreleases.html. The conference was opened by Fariborz Pooya (head of Iranian Secular Society), the conference's Master of Ceremonies. After a welcome from Giles Enders on behalf of Conway Hall and Zia Zaffar on behalf of CEMB's Executive Committee, the audience watched a clip from Patty Debonitas' film 'Breaking the taboo.' Maryam Namazie, the CEMB's spokesperson, then gave an opening address, saying that the political Islamic movement used rights and anti-racist language for western consumption so that it could go about its business as usual. She said: 'While Islamic organisations here talk in PR speak, they, their courts, their schools, their leaders are nothing but extensions of Islamic states.' She went on to say 'In the end, political Islam matters to people because it affects their lives, their rights, their freedoms. And that's why only a movement that puts people first can mobilise the force needed to stop it.' This was followed by Plenary 1 entitled 'Apostasy laws and the Freedom to Renounce and Criticise Religion' chaired by Caspar Melville, editor of the New Humanist. Panellists were Mina Ahadi (head of the Council of ex-Muslims of Germany); AC Grayling (philosopher and author), Ehsan Jami (former head of the Council of Ex-Muslims of the Netherlands), Fariborz Pooya, Hanne Stinson (Chief Executive of the British Humanist Association) and Ibn Warraq (author). The panellists called for the immediate release of all those imprisoned for 'apostasy'; an abolition of the death penalty; and a cancellation of laws wherever they exist that punish the right and freedom to renounce or criticise Islam. After lunch, comedian Nick Doody entertained the crowd with a routine critical of religion. This was followed by Plenary 2 entitled 'Sharia Law and Citizenship Rights'. It was chaired by Andrew Copson (Director of Education and Public Affairs of the British Humanist Association); panellists were Mahin Alipour (head of the Scandinavian Councils of Ex-Muslims), Roy Brown (International Humanist and Ethical Union's Representative at the UN Human Rights Council), Johann Hari (journalist), Maryam Namazie and Ibn Warraq. The audience overwhelmingly supported the following resolution at the end of the plenary: The conference calls on the UK and European governments to bring an end to the use and implementation of Sharia law, which is discriminatory against women and children in particular, and to guarantee unconditional equal citizenship rights for all. The audience then watched a remake of the right wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders' film entitled Fitna Remade by Reza Moradi. After a break, Richard Dawkins (scientist, author) provided his criticism of Harun Yahya's Atlas of Creation for which his site has been banned in Turkey, which was followed by questions and answers from the audience. This was followed by Plenary 3 entitled 'Creationism, Religious Education and Faith Schools,' which was chaired by Keith Porteous Wood (Executive Director of the National Secular Society). Panellists were Richard Dawkins, Terry Sanderson (President of the NSS), Joan Smith (journalist and activist), Bahram Soroush (Labour Solidarity Committee Public Relations Officer), and Hamid Taqvaee (leader of the Worker-communist Party of Iran). The audience showed their unequivocal opposition to faith schools here. Maryam Namazie closed the conference by calling on the participants to mobilise around March 8 - International Women's Day - to step up opposition against Sharia law and political Islam. As she had said earlier: 'In the end, political Islam matters to people because it affects their lives, their rights, their freedoms. And that's why only a movement that puts people first can mobilise the force needed to stop political Islam. And it must - it will - be stopped.' Throughout the day, various CEMB representatives spoke with the media, including the BBC, Al Arabiya TV, Italian state TV, The Wall Street Journal, CNS News, etc. To read Richard Dawkins' thoughts on the conference, visit http://richarddawkins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=60487. Bigots against baul monument Staff Correspondent Some Muslim bigots on Wednesday forced government authorities to pull down a monument of bauls on the roundabout at Zia International Airport in Dhaka after they had tried to raze and rallied against the sculpture. The Dhaka City Corporation six months ago decided to erect a monument at the place as part of the city beautification programme. Sculptor Mrinal Haque about three months and a half ago started building the monument, sculptures of five bauls holding ektaras, single-stringed instruments, symbolising the exuberance of the Bengali culture. The initiative was sponsored by the United Commercial Bank. `I have completed 80 per cent of the work amid protests by some Muslim bigots in the name of religious sentiments being hurt,' Mrinal told New Age. `Sensing trouble, the airport and the civil aviation authorities decided to pull down the monument and I agreed to the proposal.' Several hundred bigots, teamed up as the committee against statue in the airport crossing, tried to stop the initiative just after Mirnal had started work. The bigots on Wednesday gathered near the neighbouring Babu Salam Mosque and brought out a procession demanding that the monument should be immediately dismantled. A large number of lawmen, including Rapid Action Battalion personnel, reached the place, but failed to tackle the situation. The situation deteriorated when several hundred people from different mosques reached the place and joined the protesters at about 3:00pm. High police officials and the civil aviation authorities at a brief meeting decided to move the sculpture to ward off further trouble. The civil aviation authorities assigned the Fair Enterprise and the Probhati Enterprise to move the sculptures and the protesters joined the demolition job at about 5:00pm. The Airport police told New Age they were pulling down the monument at the directive of higher authorities. ------------------------------------
