Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Talibanisation reaches Dhaka Airport

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50297

It's not a space that the muslims worship. It is a stone, Hajre Aswad, a
symbol of birth canal engraved on a meteoric stone that they worship. It is
the most primitive matriarchal form of worship known in history. S. A.
Hannan is obviously ignorant and can't recognize what he sees. Any innocent
analyst would see a minaret as a phallic symbol, and a dome as a female
breast.

[mukto-mona] Re: Talibanisation reaches Dhaka Airport

Islam does not worship idols. But Islam says to respect other religions. Islam does not say anywhere in the Quran to kill people with bombs if they do not accept "the rule of Allah" but Muhammad repeatedly said to show respect toward people of other religions.

If having sculptures of noble people and great people in a country inspires the nation towards doing good to other people, what can be the wrong there? Sculptures inspire us, help us to think of good things, good works of those people. We never worship any sculpture, any more than we worship photos of ourselves, which no one condemns as un-Islamic. Because all these imams and mullahs have their passport having their photograph. If that is not condemnable, why should they condemn and break such national monuments. Is their religion a real 'Islam' or 'the Islam that these extrimists'created of their own. A monument or painting or photograph shows how we are grateful to those departed people who contributed to this world. We do not worship any idol or statue or sculpture which is being erected on our way, in the park, in the museum and so on. There are thousands of Muslims in European countries where hundreds and thousands of sculptures are there everywhere. Are those Muslims becoming frantic like these of ours? Are we creating terror in the madrasas? We have seen the madness and vandalism by the small madrasa students. What are they learing from the imams of the madrasa? We have observed that one of the madrasa teachers or imam was encouraging the small students (children) to break the sculptures. If it is a 'sin' for the madrasa teachers and students to see the national sculptures or monuments to outstanding people, they can turn their face away but they don't have any right to destroy them.

In a sense all Muslims are worshiping a picture or a building (the Kaaba Sharif building in Mecca, pictures of which are displayed in many mosques). Is Islam teaching tolerance as Muhammad taught people to be patient? Is this the sign of 'peace' these Muslim imams and mullahs use to prove that 'Islam is a religion of peace'? What are they teaching the numerous small children who are studying in the madrasas? What can we expect in future from these little children of madrasa who were used and abused by these mullahs and imams of that mosque? Can we think of anything positive about them?

[ALOCHONA] Jang/News - Ammar Ali Jan on The Indian Threat

The notion that everything wrong with Pakistan was India's fault was the most popular perception of the 90s and its now creeping back in

By Ammar Ali Jan

The News

http://jang.com.pk/thenews/oct2008-weekly/nos-19-10-2008/dia.htm#5

As a child of the nineties, I remember how India was the number one whipping boy with our establishment and the government-controlled media. Every night, on PTV Khabarnama, we would hear about the atrocities being committed by the Indian army against the "freedom fighters" in Jammu and Kashmir. Not only was there an outright condemnation of everything Indian, there was also a plethora of songs and TV serials (my childhood favourite being Alpha Bravo Charlie) in favour of the jawans. At the same time, we were told that everything wrong that happened in Pakistan was somehow a "Hindu" conspiracy. Like many other kids my age, I believed the only way to be patriotic was to hate India and to love the Pakistani military.

This depiction of India as enemy number one has been the main reason for the army's enormous influence in all the decision-making in Islamabad .This concerted effort to glorify the army was being carried out when the establishment was also busy vilifying all politicians as corrupt and "national security threats". This perception ensured the smooth takeover by the military on Oct 12, 1999. The fact that Musharraf could not act as strongly as he promised vis-a-vis India not only meant that public attention was diverted from the "Indian" threat, it also undermined the rais'on d'etre(reason for being) for a powerful national security state.

However, with the return to civilian rule, we are witnessing another attempt by the establishment to demonise the Indian state and to portray the civilian government as "weak" on national security. Unfortunately, people like Ansar Abbasi and Shireen Mazari, who otherwise supported the democratic movement against the generals, have started taking an extraordinarily hawkish line on India in their recent articles. From the Balochistan insurgency to suicide bombings to the trouble in the tribal regions, everything is being blamed on the Indians. Knowing the disastrous consequences (read military takeover) of a view that depicts civilians as weak on national security, it is important to demonstrate the problems with this hypothesis and also to show how no one but our own national security apparatus has to be blamed for the mess we find ourselves in today.

To begin with, we must review the history of our India policy. Immediately after partition, Pakistan went to war with India in 1948 over the disputed territory of Kashmir. This resulted in the formulation of India as an existentialist threat for the new state, at least in the minds of our establishment. Pakistan moved closer to the US with the signing of the Baghdad pact in 1954 in order to counter India's strategic partnership with the Soviet Union. Relying on our friend Uncle Sam, our establishment tried to "liberate" Kashmir by launching operation Gibraltar in 1965. In this operation, the Pakistan army sent in fighters and arms into Kashmir in order to ignite a rebellion in the State. This adventure was a terrible failure and lead to the 'surprise' attack on Lahore by the Indians.

Colonel SG Mehdi, who was heading the SSG just before the 1965 war, wrote a fascinating article in 1998 that demonstrated how childish the entire plan was and why he opposed this needless provocation on part of the Pakistani military high command. He also states in the same article that if a thorough inquiry had been conducted into the failures of the 1965 war, we could have avoided the 1971 debacle. (http://www.defencejournal.com/july98/1965war.htm) However, our official historians celebrate the 6th of Sept as Defence day by narrating the heroics of the Pakistan army in saving Pakistan from a disaster. They never explain how the army high command created that disaster to begin with.

During this time, our establishment played the India card to quell any opposition to the state. Wali Khan, leader of the National Awami Party (NAP), was declared an Indian agent and hence incarcerated. Nationalist leaders in Balochistan, Sindh and East Pakistan met the same fate. In fact, a military operation was launched against the people of East Pakistan on charges that they had joined "Hindu" India in a conspiracy to break the "Muslim" Pakistan.

This nonsensical conspiracy theory for the 1971 war is endlessly repeated in our history books. What this analysis ignores is the treatment meted out to the Bengalis by the Pakistani state. They were denied provincial autonomy and control over their resources, their leadership was jailed, their demands were rejected and on top of all that, a brutal military operation (termed genocide by the Bengalis) was launched against the eastern wing resulting in thousands of casualties.

Keeping in mind the track record of the establishment in dealing with its subjects, is it fair to put the entire blame of this defeat on the shoulders of a foreign player?

Those who thought the '71 defeat would instill some sense into our establishment were to be disappointed. Rather than attempting to improve the relationship between the two countries, ZA Bhutto's government devised the "strategic depth" policy in which Afghanistan was supposed to give strategic depth to Pakistan in case of a war with India. Islamabad needed a friendly government in Kabul and for this purpose Rabbani's men were trained in Pakistan to set-up a friendly regime in Afghanistan. During General Zia's time, this theory was implemented by added intensity, especially after the Soviet invasion. The Pakistani state, in collaboration with the US, set-up a network of training camps inside Pakistan to wage the Afghan "Jihad". Thousands of youngsters were trained and sent to "liberate" Afghanistan from the Soviet occupation. madrassahs mushroomed all over the country, giving "strategic depth" to the Mullahs in our society. Anyone who opposed this made in Washington policy was thrown into Zia's notorious jails as a communist sympathiser or an Indian/Hindu agent.

After a victory in a shattered Afghanistan, our establishment now took upon its shoulders the task of liberating its Kashmiri brethren. The boys from the Afghan Jihad were redirected to Kashmir in 1989 and for the next 13 years, our state gave full support to the Kashmiri "freedom fighters". This, of course, changed in 2002 when General Musharraf declared these groups as terrorists and rounded up its cadres. Many remain missing even today.

Today, we are witnessing the blowback effect of an incredibly short-sighted policy by our establishment. The tribal areas are in a complete rebellion, the list of suicide bombings is increasing at an alarming rate and a security threat is posed by the madrassahs as demonstrated by the Lal Masjid crisis. Those jihadis nurtured by the state for the past thirty years, supposedly to protect us from the Indian threat, have been a threat to the very survival of the Pakistani state.

In such circumstances, those who are blaming India for all the security problems being faced by Pakistan are delusional at best. We can't be sure what role India is playing in escalating these tensions, but we should have a consensus that the role played by our security apparatus, the agencies that are suppose to protect us, has been terrible to say the least. While those in charge of the security apparatus have made a fortune for themselves, as shown by Ayesha Siddiqui in her book Military Inc., they failed miserably in their real job of protecting Pakistanis by adopting policies without a clear vision.

Even if we take the hawkish line that some journalists and political parties are taking these days, have the army generals fared any better than the civilians even on that account when they were in power? Ayub Khan conceded defeat at Tashkent in 1966, General Niazi surrendered his ninety thousand soldiers to the Indian army at Dhaka, General Zia conceded defeat on Siachin and General Musharraf banned all those groups whom he use to refer to as freedom fighters. Not a heroic record by any stretch of the word!

This does not mean that the Indian security apparatus is any better. They have consistently pointed their fingers at Pakistan whenever something goes wrong. The Indian establishment, much like ours, has failed to recognise its own mistakes, especially in Kashmir where the Indian army has been particularly brutal.

Khalil Jibran in his play Satan makes the point that the priest needs Satan if he wants to remain in business. The same is true for the establishments of India and Pakistan. They need to create fear of the other in order to justify their own existence. What we need is a genuine, people's peace movement in both these countries that can challenge this concept of a national security state. Especially in Pakistan, we need to stop blaming India for the current mess we find ourselves in. Identifying the real culprits will facilitate true accountability, weaken the grip of the army on our state and consequently, will help the democratisation of our State and society.

[mukto-mona] Jamaat recognises Liberation War, allows non-muslims to become it's member

Jamaat recognises Liberation War

Key Points:

(1) allows non-Muslims to be members  [Is Jamaat becoming a
secular party ?]
(2) anti-liberation Jamaat-e-Islami has recognised the historic
Liberation War of Bangladesh
(3) Jamaat also dropped a symbol with the words 'Allahu' and
'Aqimuddin'
(4) provisions for reserving 33 percent seats for women in all its
committees.
(5) the party is renamed as Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BIJ)
changing its earlier name Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JIB).

[Note:
One great philisopher [perhaps Hegel] remarked somewhere that historic facts and personages  appear, so to speak, twice.
Another historian added: the first time as tragedy, the second time
as farce. These may very well proven again in Bangladesh in
case of Jamaate Islami.... in 1971 Jamaat was a tragedy for
Bangladesh ....... it is very likely that this time Bangladesh
Jamaat-e-Islami will prove itself to be the farce of 21st century
Bangladesh ...just a matter of time ..]

Jamaat recognises Liberation War
Makes major changes in constitution for registration; allows non-Muslims to be members but puts onus of protecting independence only on them
Shakhawat Liton and Rashidul Hasan

Finally, anti-liberation Jamaat-e-Islami has recognised the historic Liberation War of Bangladesh in its newly revised constitution.

The change of policy was forced upon it by its desperation to keep itself legitimised as a parliamentary party registered with the Election Commission (EC), in the face of new amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

The amended RPO says the constitution of a political party seeking registration cannot contradict the country's constitution.

Jamaat's provisional constitution which was submitted to the EC for getting registered as a parliamentary party, also renamed the organisation Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, changing its earlier name Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.

Jamaat also dropped a symbol with the words 'Allahu' and 'Aqimuddin' in Arabic from the cover of its provisional constitution.

The party adopted its constitution in 1979.

Its also allows non-Muslims to be members of Jamaat, but puts the responsibility of protecting the country's independence and sovereignty by taking an oath only on them, while the Muslim members are exempted from taking that oath.

"I shall actively play a role in defending the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh," reads a section of the oath scheduled for non-Muslim members, whose inclusion was prompted by the party's latest necessity for removing religious and gender discriminations within the organisation.

According to Jamaat's interim constitution which will be ratified by a national council within six months of the first sitting of the next parliament, as promised by it, both Muslim and non-Muslim members however must swear to abide by the rules and decisions of the party, giving the highest priority to implementing the decisions.

Among other fundamental beliefs and spirits, Jamaat also accepted the spirit of the heroic liberation war of 1971 by inserting a new paragraph into the preamble of its new provisional constitution.

The heroic struggle of the people and freedom fighters that liberated Bangladesh and put it on the world map as an independent country has been mentioned as a part of the fundamental beliefs and spirits of the party.

Submitting the application for registration and the provisional constitution to the EC for being qualified to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general of Jamaat, said his party has been in politics since May, 1979 by accepting the creation of Bangladesh through the liberation war.

Jamaat was constitutionally banned for years in the newly independent country for its anti-liberation activities and collaboration with the invading army in 1971.

Many Jamaat leaders were facing charges of war crimes and some of them were on the run.

But the party was allowed to resume its activities in 1979 as the constitutional ban on forming religion based political parties was repealed after the bloody regime change of August 15, 1975.

Lately, Jamaat's survival was facing difficulties again as the revised RPO made political parties' registration with the EC mandatory for contesting in the parliamentary election.

The strict new provisions forced the party to change the preamble to its constitution accepting the historic liberation war as its original constitution contradicted the Constitution of Bangladesh.

Jamaat, traditionally an Islamist fundamentalist party, in its revised constitution replaced the phrase describing its goal of 'establishing the rule of Allah' with a new phrase of 'establishing a fair and just Islamic society'.

The party included a new section in its constitution's preamble that says, "Jamaat-e-Islami will work to establish an Islamic social system that guarantees justice for all, since Bangladesh emerged as the third largest Muslim country through a heroic battle of the people and freedom fighters."

According to its interim constitution, Jamaat also co-opted the members of its women's majlish-e-sura into the central majlish-e-sura, the highest policy making body.

It also added provisions for reserving 33 percent seats for women in all its committees with a promise to achieve the target by 2020.

In line with the amended RPO, the new Jamaat constitution also promises to nominate parliamentary contenders from a panel created by the grassroots level committees and forwarded to the party's parliamentary board.

About severing its ties with front organisations, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman who yesterday went to apply for the party's registration, said Jamaat has no front organisation.

Jamaat, a key component of BNP-led four-party alliance which ruled the country just before the current caretaker government, had earlier refused to get registered with the EC under the current RPO, and challenged its legality in the High Court terming some of the amendments unconstitutional.

[mukto-mona] FAKE ENCOUNTERS: Two years after fake 'encounter', victims' kin get relief: Rs 3 lakh

Two years after 'fake encounter', victims' kin get relief: Rs 3 lakh

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/two-years-after-fake-encounter-victims-kin-get-relief-rs-3-lakh/375263/

New Delhi, October 18 : Two years after two Ghaziabad-based men were
killed in a fake encounter at Timarpur, their families have been
granted compensation of Rs 3 lakh each following directions from the
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Nazakat, a labourer, and Zulfiqar, a taxi driver, lived in Hawalpur,
Ghaziabad. They were gunned down by Delhi Police in an encounter on
July 31, 2006.

Ghaziabad police registered an FIR after relatives of the deceased
protested their killing. The case was later transferred to the Crime
Branch
and it was found by their investigations and postmortem reports
that the encounter was fake. The probe found the policemen conducted
it to avenge the death of a fellow policeman's brother. Nine policemen
were dismissed subsequently.

Now, ACO (North district) has written to DCP (Headquarters) seeking
details of relatives of the two men killed for issuing the cheques
bearing interim relief of Rs 3 lakhs each. The letter, dated September
17, says, "The head of accounts, under which the payment is to be
made, may also be intimated to this office for taking appropriate
action."

Deceased Zulfiqar's father Ghulam Nabi told Newsline the family didn't
even know they were eligible for compensation, but "some policemen
guided us". He said the family members were called to the Delhi Police
Headquarters
last month and given the letter detailing the
compensation.

"My son was the family's only earning member and I am working as a
scrap dealer in Delhi since his death," Nabi said. "The compensation
would not, of course, get my son back but at least I can get my other
children married off with the money."

Zulfiqar's wife, he added, is living with her parents for the past
year. The couple had two children.

Babu, father of the fake encounter's other victim Nazakat, said the
family had as good as given up hope of ever getting the compensation
and "actually surprised" when they got the confirmation that about the
Rs 3-lakh amount.

Ghulam Nabi's brother-in-law Irfan said, "I have seen Ghulam running
from pillar to post to feed his family after the so-called encounter
took away his eldest son. He has fought every day for his family's
survival."

Ghulam Nabi's family includes his wife, four sons and two daughters.

Nabi also expressed his "gratitude" towards Ghaziabad police
personnel: "After all, they heard my plea and registered a case
against their Delhi counterparts."

Meanwhile, with Pramod Kumar Tyagi, one of the accused policemen,
still at large,...

[ALOCHONA] Re: Upcoming conspiracies surrounding general election in Bangladesh

Mr. Ahsan Mohammed,

May be you are only reading the right-wing Bangladeshi newpapers.  If you read the other papers, you will find more conspiracies.  You will find many who consider this current CTG as Jamaat's B team.  This CTG has been extraordinarily soft on Jamaat and other religious fanatics and extremists.  Look at the joke and circus regarding Al Badr co-chief Mujahid's arrest.  While people like you always smell RAW, MOSSAD and CIA conspiracies, there are lot more people who smell CIA, ISI and Wahabi conspiracies.  It goes both ways.

Your article in Naya Diganta presents only right-wing view points and it cannot be accepted as fair and balanced piece.  ISI is one of the top players in Indian subcontinent.  They are behind many subversive acts.  They created Talibans and hence aided Al Qaeda.  To leave them out from your equation strongly suggest, you are pushing right-wing agenda.  You mentioned in your article that since BNP's leadership is trying to negotiate with CTG, they didn't protest CEC's very indecent comments on the pseudo-Islamic partners of BNP.  May be you can teach us what kind of decent words the CEC should have used for their outright lies.  Let me make another very indecent and rude comment about these mullahs - these mullahs actively and enthusiastically participated in all sorts of heinous war crimes in 1971.  Regards-

Mohammad Musa Sarkar

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Talibanisation reaches Dhaka Airport

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50297

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. No serious scholar in the world has said that Muslims praying in the direction of Macca or Kabah is a kind of idol worshipping.Quran itself says that the directionof east or west it self has no , the true merit lies in the true faith and good deeds. The direction has been prescribed only for unity of purpose.(sura baqarah)

In our prayer, we begin by saying Allahu Akbar and then the Quran is recited, sitting and postures are all done l, in the name of Allah.

[mukto-mona] Meeting with Shahriar Kabir

BHBCUC-USA leaders met with Shahriar Kabir

Leaders of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, USA met with Shahariar Kabir on Sunday, 19th Oct 2008 in a restaurant in Queens, NY. The meeting discussed various topics including national election, rise of fundamentalism & Islamic militancy in Bangladesh and related minority issues in length. It was very congenial and lasted more than two hours. Shahriar Kabir told that, Jamaat is the umbrella of all the terrorist organizations in Bangladesh and they have local, regional & global terrorist connections. He said Jamaat should not be allowed to sit in our parliament and its leaders should be tried for genocide in 1971. He expressed satisfaction with the works of Oikyo Parishad and urged for greater unity.

[ALOCHONA] Re: CEC Huda in P ALo office with BAL n Jote Leaders n supporter professionalls!! ! Can we expect a fair election??? jote i

Huda was selected for this position by the current CTG and the current CTG is seen as Jamaat's B team by many.  Just read Biggest Joke - Police hunt for Mojahid in this discussion group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/alochona/message/11092

This CTG has been extraordinarily soft on Jamaat and other religious fanatics and extremists.  Can you explain that?  Because of Kuwaiti, Qatari, Saudi threats?  Our so-called Muslim brothers (or masters) might get even with the poor, helpless and lowly paid Bangladeshi workers.  We are nothing but jokes and we love to show Islamic attitudes at every chance with pure hypocrisy in our mind.

[mukto-mona] Fwd: FACT FINDING REPORT ON ACCUSED IN BOMB BLAST INCIDENT, SHAHBAZ AHMED

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Sandeep Pandey <ashaashram@yahoo.com>
Date: Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 7:59 PM
Subject: FACT FINDING REPORT ON ACCUSED IN BOMB BLAST INCIDENT, SHAHBAZ AHMED
To: "S. R. Darapuri" <srdarapuri@yahoo.co.in>

A PUCL-PUHR FACT FINDING REPORT ON ACCUSED IN BOMB BLAST INCIDENT, SHAHBAZ AHMED

Case of Shahbaz Ahmed arrested in connection with serial bomb blasts in Jaipur

Shahbaz Ahmed s/o Mumtaz Ahmed (9889406961), resident of Bhadohi, 32 years old, was a member of SIMI as a student. He completed his B.Sc. and then B.J. from Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi . Two years after completion of his studies he got married to Sadaf d/o Abdul Moid (9792439090) in 2002. Since he was not interested in the carpet business of his father he decided to move to Lucknow in 2004 with his wife to try his luck as a journalist. His father-in-law spent 8.5 lakh rupees after selling his house in Sultanpur to buy and renovate a house for Sadaf and Shahbaz in Molviganj, Lucnkow. Additionally, he spent Rs. 1 lakh to help him get started with a cyber café business couple of years ago. However, he changed his business to Career consultancy, training and foreign education. He was also planning to start a travel agency.

According to his wife, who herself is a B.Com and CIC from KNI in Sultanpur, Shahbaz was a soft spoken and introvert but polite person. He used to offer Namaz five times a day but was not a fundamentalist. He used to wear western clothing and would occasionally take her to cinema and parks. In fact, she said that she was pleasantly surprised that Shahbaz was not a very conservative person and allowed her independence in various matters. He was not proficient in Urdu and could read it with difficulty. He used to write in Hindi and English. He desired to send his children, three in number with the eldest being 4 years old, to City Montessori School, a modern centre of education in Lucknow. Shahbaz had discontinued his association with SIMI after marriage.

The owner of Adarsh Market, where his shop Zyna Career Consultants was located, Rais Ansari, said that he would not have renewed the contract with Shahbaz if he would have found anything wrong with him. On the contrary, he was full of praise for his behaviour. Naveen Sharma, who has a shop on the first floor of the building in which Shahbaz was on second floor, was shocked at the implication of Shahbaz in bomb blast incident. Shahbaz would exchange greetings when passing by his shop in going up to and coming down from his shop. Mohammad Mubin Bablu, the President of Aminabad Vyapar Mandal Madhya, of which Shahbaz was a member, testified to his professional qualities.

Mohammed Furkan, in the business of footwear, and Arjun Singh, a retd. Government employee, who lives in the neighbourhood of Shahbaz found nothing unusual with Shahbaz. He used to exchange greetings with everybody while going to and coming from his shop. He did not have any group of friends or frequent visitors. Shahbaz preferred to spend time with his family when away from work. He used to get some newspapers and periodicals at his home, but none of them of religious nature.

The office bearers of Jamat-e-Islami, whose office he would pass by everyday while going to and coming back from work, confirmed that he never attended any of their meetings or social functions. He probably never went there.

It was alleged by Rajasthan police that transactions in crores had taken place from his bank account. We checked both his bank accounts. In the account with IndusInd Bank which he recently tried to open with a cheque of Rs. 10,000, the balance was zero as the cheque had bounced. In another account with SBI, initially in the name of Sadaf in which Shahbaz's name was also added later, the balance was Rs. 1,806. There was no transaction between December, 2007 and May, 2008. The single largest transaction was that of Rs. 15,000.  The bank accounts portray a picture of a struggling middle class entrepreneur who was mostly raising his family on his daily earnings.

He had only two employees at his shop - an assistant Sarika and a helper Rahul, incidentally both Hindu.

His neighbours and shop owners in proximity of his shop confirmed that he hardly used to travel outside. His wife mentioned a few occasions when he went on vacation with his family. He had never been to Jaipur, which was also confirmed by Mahendra Chaudhary, Addl. S.P. and the investigating officer of Rajasthan Police in his case.

It is alleged by the Rajasthan Police that Shahbaz Ahmed sent e-mail from a cyber café based in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad between 10th to 13th May just before the blasts in Jaipur. However, following are the results of our verification of the record of phone calls made from his land line phone in his office situated in Molviganjj, Lucknow , during this period.

(i) Call made on 10th May at 09973472944, 12:48 hrs. in Bokaro to Mussarat regarding admission to a University in Singapore . There was another call made at 16:28 hrs on same day and then on 12/05/08 at 14:00 hrs and 16:23 hrs. and on 13/05/08 at 16:34 hrs. Mussarat confirmed that he had spoken to Shahbaz Ahmed.

(ii) Call made on 12th May at 022 24450617, 12:07 pm to Arbab Travels, Mumbai. It could not be confirmed whether it was actually Shahbaz who had called.

(iii) Call made on 13th May at 044 42125454, 19:01 hrs. to Sriram of Singapore Worldwide Students' Placement in Chennai regarding tie-up with this agency. Call made again at this number on same day at 19:17 hrs. Most likely Shahbaz Ahmed talked to Sriram because there was nobody else in his office who could speak about this matter.

(iv) Call made on 13th May at 09967141997, 12:08 hrs. to Hasan, a real estate agent. It could not be confirmed whether it was Shahbaz who had made this call

STD calls could be made from the phone in Shahbaz's office only after unlocking the code. Hence, most likely all the above calls were made by Shahbaz as it is very unlikely that Sarika or anybody else would have made these calls from his office.

Rajasthan Police has alleged that Shahbaz has been identified by the owner of the Cyber Café but this identification after a lapse of five months is doubtful in itself as the café is daily frequented by so many persons.

Rajasthan Police has also alleged that a laptop computer was recovered from Shahbaz whereas the fact is that Shahbaz did not possess a laptop.

Conclusion: We think that Shahbaz Ahmed is innocent and has been picked up by police merely because he was a one time member of SIMI and his name probably cropped up in interrogation of one of the accused picked up earlier than him. Or may be police got hold of some membership list of SIMI from the years when he was a member. Shahbaz's life has changed after his marriage and it is unlikely that a person would be involved in bomb blasts in May when a child is born to his wife in April by a major operation. He seems to have been mostly busy trying to establish his business to ensure a decent earning to raise his family.

The verification of calls made from his land line phone in office proves the presence of   Shahbaz Ahmed in Lucknow between 10th and 13th May, 2008 and contradicts the version of Rajasthan police of his presence in Sahibabad during this period. Identification of Shahbaz by the owner of the Cyber café after a lapse of five months is also doubtful.
