[mukto-mona] Hindu Terrorists behind Malegaon, Modasa blasts

Hindu group behind Malegaon, Modasa blasts: Cops

Thu, Oct 23 09:40 AM

The Maharashtra police are said to have cracked the September 29 bomb blasts in Malegaon and Modasa town in neighbouring Gujarat saying these were allegedly carried out by the Hindu Jagran Manch, an Indore-based Hindu extremist group known to have links to the BJP's student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The key suspects are being questioned, top Maharashtra Police sources have told The Indian Express.

Five Muslims were killed in a powerful blast in the communally sensitive textile town of Malegaon in Maharashtra and one Muslim boy was killed in the explosion in Modasa in Sabarkantha district.
Both bombs were placed on motorcycles parked in crowded areas days before Eid and set off after Muslims had broken their Ramzan fast on a Monday evening.
The BJP had condemned both the blasts. Investigators initially suspected Islamist groups such as SIMI or the Indian Mujahideen to be behind the near-simultaneous attacks - the first blast was at Modasa at 9.26 pm, the second minutes later in Malegaon - as they came in the aftermath of blasts in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Delhi.
Besides, the motorcycle in Malegaon was parked below the now-defunct first floor office of SIMI while the one used in Modasa had Islamic stickers on its seat.
However, investigators found that these were apparently attempts by the attackers to mislead them, the sources said.
The breakthrough, they said, came when they traced the origin of the two-wheeler used in Malegaon. The vehicle used was a LML Freedom brand although some of its parts had been cannibalised from other vehicles and the chassis and engine numbers had been erased.
But with this brand out of production, dealer records and help from forensic experts led the probe to Gujarat, the sources said.
The motorcycle was allegedly owned by a man with an "ABVP background" there while the attackers belonged to the Hindu Jagran Manch with its headquarters based out of the office of an NGO in Indore, investigators found.
Top Maharashtra police officials confirmed the breakthrough but refused to go on record due to the sensitivities involved, adding that Central agencies were aware of the development.
The blast in Malegaon had sparked mob violence as angry Muslims targeted the local police and grievously injured the first policemen to arrive at the site, including a probationary IPS officer.
The attack came two years to the month when three bombs had exploded in and around a mosque in the town and killed 37 people, mostly Muslim worshippers.
That attack was blamed on SIMI and nine men were arrested but the trial has been stayed by the Supreme Court.

[ALOCHONA] What You should know about RAW

What You should know about RAW

by Satish Chandra

I have written (for example in my article titled `India's Technological and Economic Emancipation' on sulekha.com) about the continued control of Indian intelligence agencies by British and later American intelligence agencies after 1947. India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was split off from the Intelligence Bureau which had continued after 1947 to be loyal to the British. Later the Americans supplanted the British and RAW functions as a branch of the CIA against India. As part of this relationship, CIA-RAW exercises extensive control over the Indian media and, among its various activities, engages in sabotage of indigenous research and development to keep India dependent on other countries for defence and other equipment (the nuclear deal is just another CIA-RAW operation of that kind, though of a scope and with consequences far graver than any such operation till now).

An example of this is a Bharat-Rakshak discussion thread about a black box installed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in the indigenously developed Arjun tank that documented the sabotage of its engines during trials by the Army; such sabotage has been the basis of the Army's rejection, on RAW's prompting, of the Arjun tank in favour of imports (as I said in the above article, India`s Army is the collaborator Army that helped the British rule India and, even after Independence, all its regiments and units have retained their former identities and regularly celebrate the anniversaries of their founding by the British).

A CIA-RAW operative, who serves as a moderator on Bharat-Rakshak and controls the forum, recently locked away this discussion thread so that numerous posts that had appeared documenting the sabotage of the Arjun tank were covered up. The major metropolitan newspapers, on most of which CIA-RAW exercises extensive control, have made no mention of the black box — which was like the flight data recorder in aircraft — installed by DRDO in Arjun tanks and the shocking findings about the sabotage even though a report on this was provided to them by the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS). There is across the board sabotage by various means by CIA-RAW to keep India down technologically, economically and militarily. RAW's grip over India is comparable to the old KGB's grip over the Soviet Union, with the difference that whereas the KGB worked for the good of the Soviet Union, except toward the end, RAW has always worked for its imperialist paymasters. The role of politicians in governing India is insignificant compared to that of CIA-RAW but RAW has no place in the public's consciousness or in discussions of public affairs in India.

An important point about the sabotage of Arjun is that people on the Arjun discussion thread on Bharat-Rakshak were aghast at the Army's behavior and calling for Army brass being tried for treason, etc. but it will be a mistake to stop with the Army; it is RAW which is behind such sabotage not just of Arjun but of India's interests, technological, economic and other, in a lot of areas. RAW has operatives in the Army at various levels but it is necessary to go to the root of the problem. RAW has to be destroyed and I have said that a brand new external intelligence agency should be formed with the help of military intelligence (RAW is supposed to be India's external intelligence agency but at least 90% of its activities are within India, against India).

The destruction of RAW does not mean simply disbanding the agency and letting its employees continue their service to the CIA through other organisations, old or new, or in other roles. It is a mammoth agency with just the number of joint secretaries in the hundreds. It is India's real `government' and the politicians and civil servants largely obey its dictates. It puts the words in the mouths of cabinet ministers, etc., and determines most policies that are, erroneously, attributed to them. Any one, even a prime minister, whom CIA-RAW considers inconvenient is eliminated, if necessary by death, as I have said regarding the deaths of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and, later, Rajiv Gandhi in my article titled `How India`s economy can grow 30% per year`.

Over the past many years, I have shown how almost all terrorist incidents in India since 1983 have been carried out by outfits controlled by the CIA either directly or through intelligence agencies in the region, including India's RAW. The Jain Commision of Inquiry, which went into Rajiv Gandhi's death, acknowledged that the LTTE, which carried out his assassination, was created and controlled by RAW. It was an open secret that MQM, in Pakistan's Sindh province, when it was known as a terrorist organization, was a creation of RAW. But the same is true of many terrorist outfits that operate in India. Another example of RAW's multifarious activities, that I have described in press releases, articles and letters to the press since 1987, is its spreading heroin addiction and AIDS first in India's Northeast then elsewhere to provide the United States with a population to use as guinea pigs for AIDS vaccine development, after the CIA was assigned the task of roping in a population for this purpose.

I have described how both Rajiv Gandhi (after being blackmailed with threats of exposure of the Bofors and HDW kickbacks by Swedish and German media at the CIA`s instigation) and Vajpayee cooperated in this. But terrorism, etc., are the least of its activities; I mentioned those only because the existence of terrorism is publicly known. Its sabotage of India's research and development activities, of which the sabotage of the Arjun tank is just one example, is among the deadliest of its activities. The nuclear deal and its various aspects — replacing indigenous production of uranium and reactors with imports, the capping, rollback and elimination of India's nuclear weapons program, media control and buying up politicians, scientists, etc. for this purpose — is just the largest and deadliest of such activities, leaving out the 24-hour satellite surveillance and all the crimes, at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars per year for the past 31 years, against India's greatest scientist, described in my article titled `How India`s economy can grow 30% per year` on sulekha.com. The point is that all the tens of thousands of RAW employees are guilty of the gravest treason and deserve the death penalty. So do all those — politicians, civil servants and others — who are willing collaborators of CIA-RAW.

It is not just the Intelligence Bureau that continued to be loyal to the British after 1947. So did Nehru:"Starting about 10 hours before he tendered his resignation, Vajpayee, through the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, tried hard to induce the undersigned to issue a statement urging him to not resign (as I have said over the years, he, like Indira and Rajiv, has been a life-long paid agent of British and American intelligence agencies, with the Soviets providing some antidote which gave India a semblance of independence; Indira was made prime minister by the KGB's assassination of Shastri; and as Nehru admitted to U.S. ambassador Galbraith, he was a life-long agent of the British). No more than about 80,000 British, women and children included, ruled India for centuries. Nothing that can be said about the stupidity and slavishness of Indians will be an exaggeration." ( see my article `What can save India?' on sulekha.com). In India traitors have been the rule rather than the exception. Anyone concerned with India's defence has to take account of that.

[mukto-mona] Organic Farming "Could Feed Africa"

Organic Farming "Could Feed Africa" by Daniel Howden, The Independent UK 22 Oct 08

Traditional practices increase yield by 128 percent in east Africa, says UN.

Nairobi - Organic farming offers Africa the best chance of breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition it has been locked in for decades, according to a major study from the United Nations to be presented today.

New evidence suggests that organic practices - derided by some as a Western lifestyle fad - are delivering sharp increases in yields, improvements in the soil and a boost in the income of Africa's small farmers who remain among the poorest people on earth. The head of the UN's Environment Programme, Achim Steiner, said the report "indicates that the potential contribution of organic farming to feeding the world maybe far higher than many had supposed".

The "green revolution" in agriculture in the 1960s - when the production of food caught and surpassed the needs of the global population for the first time - largely bypassed Africa. Whereas each person today has 25 percent more food on average than they did in 1960, in Africa they have 10 percent less.

A combination of increasing population, decreasing rainfall and soil fertility and a surge in food prices has left Africa uniquely vulnerable to famine. Climate change is expected to make a bad situation worse by increasing the frequency of droughts and floods.

It has been conventional wisdom among African governments that modern, mechanised agriculture was needed to close the gap but efforts in this direction have had little impact on food poverty and done nothing to create a sustainable approach. Now, the global food crisis has led to renewed calls for a massive modernisation of agriculture on the hungriest continent on the planet, with calls to push ahead with genetically modified crops and large industrial farms to avoid potentially disastrous starvation.

Last month the UK's former chief scientist Sir David King said anti-scientific attitudes among Western NGOs and the UN were responsible for holding back a much-needed green revolution in Africa. "The problem is that the Western world's move toward organic farming - a lifestyle choice for a community with surplus food - and against agricultural technology in general and GM in particular, has been adopted across the whole of Africa, with the exception of South Africa, with devastating consequences," he said.

The research conducted by the UN Environment Programme suggests that organic, small-scale farming can deliver the increased yields which were thought to be the preserve of industrial farming, without the environmental and social damage which that form of agriculture brings with it.

An analysis of 114 projects in 24 African countries found that yields had more than doubled where organic, or near-organic practices had been used. That increase in yield jumped to 128 percent in east Africa.

"Organic farming can often lead to polarised views," said Mr Steiner, a former economist. "With some viewing it as a saviour and others as a niche product or something of a luxury... this report suggests it could make a serious contribution to tackling poverty and food insecurity."

The study found that organic practices outperformed traditional methods and chemical-intensive conventional farming. It also found strong environmental benefits such as improved soil fertility, better retention of water and resistance to drought. And the research highlighted the role that learning organic practices could have in improving local education. Backers of GM foods insist that a technological fix is needed to feed the world. But this form of agriculture requires cash to buy the patented seeds and herbicides - both at record high prices currently - needed to grow GM crops.

Regional farming experts have long called for "good farming", rather than exclusively GM or organic. Better seeds, crop rotation, irrigation and access to markets all help farmers. Organic certification in countries such as the UK and Australia still presents an insurmountable barrier to most African exporters, the report points out. It calls for greater access to markets so farmers can get the best prices for their products.

Kenyan Farmer: "I Wanted to See How UK Did It"

Henry Murage had to travel a long way to solve problems trying to farm a smallholding on the western slopes of Mount Kenya. He spent five months in the UK, studying with the experts at Garden Organic a charity in the Midlands. "I wanted to see how it was being done in the UK and was convinced we could do some of the same things here," he says.

On his return 10 years ago, he set up the Mt Kenya Organic Farm, aimed at aiding other small farmers fighting the semi-arid conditions. He believes organic soil management can help retain moisture and protect against crop failure. The true test came during the devastating drought of2000-02, when Mr Murage's vegetable gardens fared better than his neighbours'. At least 300 farmers have visited his gardens and taken up at least one of the practices he espouses. "Organic can feed the people in rural areas," he says. "It's sustainable and what we produce now we can go on producing."

Saving money on fertilisers and pesticides helps farmers afford better seeds, and composting and crop rotation are improving the soil. Traditional maize, beans and livestock farming in the area have been supplemented with new crops from borage seeds to cayenne peppers and honey, with buyers from the US to Europe. Now he is growing camomile for herbal tea, with buyers from the UK and Germany both interested.

[ALOCHONA] India’s interventionist policies in its neighbourhood

India's interventionist policies in its neighbourhood

By Asif Haroon Raja

'Sri Lanka's ethnic war was like a dragon with its tail in northeastern Sri Lanka, with its heart in Tamil Nadu and its head in New Delhi'. – Prof Sir Richard Clutterbuk

The Brahman Hindus in India have always suffered from megalomania; they wish to re-establish the fancied grandeur of the old order. They stubbornly cling to self created myths and legends and perceive that India in its old form extended from Iran and Afghanistan to Indonesia. They wish to reunite all lost territories and re-emerge as great Mahabharata. It is in the backdrop of these mythical beliefs that they eye all their neighbours with disdain.
From the time of its independence India has constantly endeavoured to browbeat them into submission and schemed to undermine them either through covert means or coercion or use of physical force. Goa and Sikkim have been absorbed into Indian Union while Pakistan has been cut to size. Truncated Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Burma, Tibet are victims of Indian intrigues.

None is able to do much because of India's huge military, nuclear and missile power and its strategic partnership with the sole super power both having commonality of interests. I have already dwelt upon Indian perverse role in dismembering Pakistan in 1971. I will confine this write up to Sri Lanka only which is suffering under the weight of Indian oppressive hegemony. Its ethnic conflict in the northeast has been transformed into a cruel war which has no end in sight.

Tamil terrorism and quest for separatism is rooted in strained Sinhalese-Tamil relations since 12th century. Tamils claim Tamil Eelam as their traditional homeland in the North and East of Sri Lanka. Sinhalese claim to the rights of settlement in the entire island as their traditional right. Both maintain their distinct language, culture, religion and social customs. While Sinhalese have their roots in Indo-Aryans, Tamils trace their history to Dravidian civilisation of South India. Sizeable number of Indian origin Tamils are settled in the upcountry region of Sri Lanka. Tamil nationalism has its basis in demand for equating Tamil language with Sinhalese and decentralisation of political power; Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike however insisted on one language. Denial of these rights turned political issue into national crisis and gave rise to Tamil militancy in 1970s.

The north-eastern island is contiguous to India's southern state of Tamil Nadu which also entertains separatist tendencies since long. After DMK led by M. Karunanidhi came to power in 1967 in Tamil Nadu, smugglers in Jaffna as well as extremist elements established contacts with smugglers and extremists in Tamil Nadu and over a period of time ethnic kinship and political considerations drew them as well as other politicians closer. The three Tamil parties in Sri Lanka joined hands in May 1972 and formed an alliance under the banner of Tamil United Front (TUF) to press for their demands. In October, a resistance movement was launched and Tamil flag hoisted. The Tamil Student Federation formed a militant wing called Tamil New Tigers which was renamed as LTTE in 1975. On May 14, 1976, a resolution was passed calling for a separate state for Tamils and TUF was renamed as TULF. The flow of arms and detonators to Jaffna increased from Tamil Nadu.

In July 1977 elections in Sri Lanka, Jayewardene defeated Mrs. Bandaranaike and after taking over as PM, he introduced liberal economic policies. TULF with 17 seats emerged as the most powerful opposition party. In the following year Jayewardene became president and Premadasa took over as PM. In 1981, communal politicians began to encourage the youth to join Tamil militant groups while militant activities from Tamil Nadu into Sri Lanka continued unabated. Tens of militant groups numbering 37 like LTTE led by V. Prabhakaran, PLOTE, EROS, EPRLF, TELA, TELO cropped up in the north-eastern Tamil dominated regions. Each had links with leftist political parties and separatist groups in India.

These groups began to function as private armies to destabilise northeastern region in pursuit of their objective of gaining independence. They established close ties with DMK's Karunanidhi. Indian leaders somehow got obsessed with an unwanted fear that its south had become vulnerable because of strategic port of Trincomalee falling into the hands of forces inimical to its interests and hence must be protected. It was feared that creation of a separate Tamil State could have serious ramifications for India since ethnic affinity between the Tamils living on both sides of the border in Sri Lanka's northeast and India's south could lead to establishment of greater Tamil Nadu (Dravida Desam).

For about a year TULF colluded with the government which estranged their relations with the militants. But after the ethnic riots in July 1983 the political leaders of TULF shifted to Tamil Nadu since they refused to take oath on 6th Amendment in the constitution that they will not support separatism. Tens of thousands of Tamils also moved to India as refugees. From August 1983 onwards, intelligence agencies of India waged a secret war in Sri Lanka. They began to covertly recruit Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu, trained them in intelligence gathering and directed them to spy on foreign naval movements in the Trincomalee harbour and security forces installations in north-eastern Sri Lanka. Chandrahasan, a son of Late S.J.V. Chelvanayakam and a lawyer, based in Madras (Chennai) who had maintained active contacts with all the militant groups was taken on board to serve RAW's purposes.

Indira Gandhi miffed by Colombo's hobnobbing with USA, Britain and other countries and wanted to keep Sri Lankan leadership under her thumb. She entrusted RAW to strengthen Sri Lankan Tamil militant groups and prevent Sri Lankan security forces from achieving a military victory. She gave a green signal to R.N. Kao to repeat the success of Bangladesh operation in Sri Lanka, who played a key role in this gory drama. Indian instructors began to impart training in various fields to all the six militant groups in real earnest. They established 30 training centres in Madras and ten other districts of Tamil Nadu, Dehra Dun, New Delhi and Bombay. Having smelt the rat, Sri Lanka launched an official protest stating that India was involved in arming and training Sri Lankan Tamils which India denied. Jayewardene began to seek equipment and training assistance from elsewhere to fight the menace of terrorism.

Jayewardene became an eyesore for hawkish Indira, because of personality clash, his hobnobbing with other powers particularly arch rival Pakistan, and his refusal to acknowledge India as the leading regional power. Indira took exception to Colombo's contacts with other counties and receiving military assistance from China, Israel and Pakistan and viewed it as a security threat to India. Establishment of VoA radio station, use of oil tank farm by foreign ships and harbour facilities at Trincomalee to warships irritated Indira. In August 1984, India moved its forces from Agra to Trivandrum, but better sense prevailed and the planned invasion of Sri Lanka was shelved in September. While playing the role of a mediator, India kept supporting the militants covertly to create chaos and weaken its neighbour.

As a consequence, the LTTE grew stronger and established worldwide network in all the geographic regions to collect funds for the Eelam war. When Rajiv Gandhi took over after the assassination of his mother in October 1984, RAW was made the intermediary between the heads of state of India and Sri Lanka in 1985. Like his mother, Rajiv also leaned heavily on RAW and allowed it to strengthen LTTE to be able to withstand military pressure from Sri Lankan security forces. By 1986, the number of Indian trained, armed and financed militants exceeded 20,000. The LTTE members were given training in host of fields including use of explosives, RDX and use of surface to air missiles.

In Tamil Nadu, 21 political parties and groups formed an alliance and pledged solidarity with LTTE. Using Tamil Nadu as a safe sanctuary, the LTTE used hit and run guerrilla tactics and with military support from RAW, the militants not only checkmated the Sri Lankan security forces but also shifted the theatre of war nearer to Colombo by carrying out massacres in border villages and exploding bombs in the capital city. India succeeded in systematically destabilising Sri Lanka. It used the militant factor as a means to pressure Colombo to change its foreign policy of becoming a pawn into the hands of outside powers. By early 1987, 2000 LTTE cadres, 8000 PLOTE cadres, 1500 EPRLF cadres, 1250 ERO cadres, 1500 TLO cadres and several other cadres had been trained in north and south India.

When Colombo launched a powerful offensive supported by air force and navy against the rebels in Jaffna in mid 1987, India notified Colombo that it would not allow Jaffna to be captured by its military. Indian air force violated Sri Lankan air space and started to provide relief supplies to the entrapped people of Jaffna through air drops. Subsequently, after signing of controversial Indo-Lanka Accord in July 1987, Indians began to move in its troops as Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) and pumped in over 100,000 troops including tanks, naval vessels and aircraft.

Having created the monster, the LTTE which by then had become a formidable force as a sequel to large-scale Indian military assistance, the spill over effects of insurgency had begun to be felt in Tamil Nadu. A peace accord was signed wherein the LTTE was to surrender arms in return for general amnesty, release of prisoners and set up of Administrative Councils to meet the demands of LTTE. The latter handed over small part of their weapons and hid the rest and its relations with IPKF remained frosty. Anti-accord forces in the south led by JVP under Rohana Wijayaweera got activated. On 18 August 1987, Jayewardene and Premadasa survived a grenade attack by JVP militants in the Parliament. As a sequel to several clashes and LTTE attacking Indian forces deployed in Sri Lanka, Indian military declared war against the LTTE on 11 October. Its efforts to capture Prabhakaran failed.

It then launched a full-fledged operation codenamed Operation Pawan against the Tamils in Jaffna and estimated to capture it within 72 hours. It took them 45 days to clear it, but after having used all its available firepower in most ruthless manner. Mortar and artillery shells rained for weeks without a stop, killing mostly innocent men, women and children. Hundreds of Tamil women were raped and most put to death after satisfying their sexual lust. Most grotesque was the cold blooded killing of sick and wounded in the Jaffna General Hospital. While the LTTE losses were very low, the Indians suffered grievous losses and had to announce a ceasefire on 21 November unilaterally. When the LTTE demanded withdrawal of Indian troops as a pre condition for talks, the war resumed. LTTE continued to receive supplies from Tamil Nadu and the state government of AIADMK led by the matinee idol M.G.Ramachandran sought withdrawal of IPKF. After the demise of Ramachandran on December 1987, his wife Janaki succeeded as Chief Minister and her government lasted only for 24 days and by the end of January 1988, presidential rule was imposed in Tamil Nadu.

Sri Lanka President Ranatunga Premadasa who succeeded J.R.Jayawardene, proved to be another tough nut to crack. He invited the LTTE and JVP for unconditional talks in April 1989 and then requested Indian forces to halt military operations against the LTTE. In July Premadasa requested the Indian for to leave Sri Lanka by the close of the same month or else it would be declared as an occupation army. In August, RAW created another shadowy organisation called Tamil National Army (TNA) that would help fill the vacuum created by the withdrawal of Indian army. RAW was provided Rs. 10 crore to recruit the youth. By September India suspended operations and agreed to withdraw by April 1990 in phases. The LTTE was secretly supplied arms and explosives by government channels to fight the TNA. The former succeeded in wiping out TNA elements from the northeast except strategic port of Trincomalee.

The price of military misadventure into Sri Lankan domestic affairs was heavy for India. Till April 1990, India had lost 1555 soldiers including 55 officers, 2987 wounded and incurred an expenditure of Rs. 1000 crore. With its departure, LTTE moved into Trincomalee and by June the LTTE struck back attacking nine police stations and killing 600 policemen. With that Eelam War II broke out. Subsequently, the LTTE eliminated the leadership of all the militant groups and merged them within its organisation to ensure its monopoly. In May 1991, on the eve of general elections in India, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by an LTTE female suicide bomber Dhanu wearing a belt bomb, which shook India. Indian Tamils were also behind the incident.

Consequent to RAW's perverse role in East Pakistan and then in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives, all its neighbours have become wary and suspicious of India. Sri Lanka burdened with an externally initiated enemy continues to fight a merciless and lethal war and the conflict seems to have no end in sight. Sri Lankan forces have performed admirably well in the face of Indian machinations and have not only retrieved whole of Eastern Province but also more than half the districts in Northern Province of Jaffna Peninsula as well. The army is close to retaking the crucial town of Kilinochchi and the LTTE has its back against the wall militarily. The balance has tilted decisively in favour of government forces and the LTTE is on the run.

Alarmed by the debacle faced by the LTTE, the DMK gave a frantic call given for an all party conference to discuss the security situation in Sri Lanka. The response was poor and Jayalalitha's AIADMK and several other parties kept away from the conference. Only the DMK, the PMK, Communist Party of India and the Tamil Nadu wings of the Congress attended. The meeting demanded that the UPA government should ensure a ceasefire in North Sri Lanka within two weeks, or their MPs would consider resignation en masse from the Lok Sabha. This was a usual gimmick to blackmail the government but it boomeranged. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi could at best give a lukewarm warning to the Lok Sabha for he knew that after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, New Delhi had shown little interest in the affairs of ethnic war in Sri Lanka. It has realised the folly of dancing with the wolves and had reaped what it had sown.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh went through the motions and has responded to the Tamil MPs' call by stating that civil wars of the sort that Sri Lanka has suffered since 1983 are not ended by military victory alone, but through negotiated settlement. He however expressed concern about the human cost being borne by the 220,000 people displaced by the fighting.

There is marked change in Delhi's attitude and it seems that it does not intend to question Sri Lanka's sovereign right to end terrorism on its territory; nor should it. It is hoped that this change is reflected in case of other neighbors including Pakistan which is presently suffering at the hands of RAW inspired militancy in Baluchistan and FATA.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has immediately assured that the current developments in northern Sri Lanka, including the escalation in the fighting against LTTE, was a "temporary phase" and that it should not be construed as an offensive against ethnic Tamil civilians. The fight is against terrorist and not at all against the Tamil people. He said that Sri Lanka wants a political solution to the problem and that he was confident this would be best addressed after defeating the terrorists militarily. He pointed out that there were not many casualties amongst the civilians who were caught in the fighting between the LTTE and security forces in northern Sri Lanka. In the past, the Tigers have called for ceasefires to help them regroup and re-arm; it is understandable that that the Sri Lankan military is chary about granting them more.

As an old friend, may I demand that you remain non-reticent in this forum.
Not only Rosaline is an ignorant person, there are others, e.g., S.A. Hannan
and Harun-Uz-Zaman might also belong to the crowd.

I am sorry, I thought this Harun-uz-Zaman as the same as the one who was a
faculty member at Ohio State University, Columbus in the 1970s. However,
this rather long article is full of empty high sounding words. If Russell
and Hitchense are all Harun has read, he has read next to nothing. I
suggest he reads Voltaire, Russeau, Baron Holbach, Marx, Bukhanin etc. He
even sems to know what part of religion is made by God. Isn't that akin to
believing that Islam is the last and best?

Most cultures had elevated their noble personalities to the status of
deities. If one criticizes icon worship and adopts icon worship, based
mostly on human reproductive organs, (s)he might have the blessings of Allah
and Mullahs, but would never be considered intelligent, except under the
shade of sword.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50344

Mr. Aslam,
It's not my comment about Pakistan government's obediency to U.S. government. Washington's daily Washington Times published that famous catoon while Dictator Mosharraf was the President of Pakistan. Although Pak government protested about this cartoon charecter of Pakistan's ruler, Times never apologised for publishing that deragotery cartoon.
Although like most Americans I do prowdlysupport Barack Obama to bring real,'Change' in America, I also strongly believe that Scientist Afia Siddiqi's case will 'humanely' handled by Obama Presidency.
As human being we should expect the best for the scientist Siddiqi.
Sincerely,

Re: [ALOCHONA] Citizens to unite against sculpture removal

If I am not mistaken, Quran says "destroy idols". These sculptures are not idols that people worship. Besides, even if people did worship idols, why does it bother you? Does it threaten your own faith? My next door neighbor is Hindu, and if he wants to So, people need to get over it, re-erect the statues. Not everything that the Quran, Bible, or other books say are relevant in our culture or current time. Baul is a part of our heritage that has been in existence for thousands of years. We have got to stop islamization of our culture and every aspect of our lives.

Our country is unified because of its language and shared culture, and not because of religion. That is our heritage. Doing anything otherwise would simply deny our history and heritage.

Subject: Citizens to unite against sculpture removal

Dear All,

Please wake up ( news atteched). Sculpture is restricted in our holy book Quran-- fact or not fact that debate has to be overcome with our knowledge and intelligence as we have already overcome in other debatable topics like: 1. Cutting of hand of a thief, 2. Using of loud speaker in Azan and prayer, 3. Performing Hajj by airplanes, 4. Co-education in primary, school, and University level 5. Taking passport picture while going for Hajj etc. etc. A tragedy, or a civil war is hanging on our motherland- dear Bangladesh. Wake up, and at least see the debates between a converted Muslim from Christianity and a converted Christian from Muslim (  Is Jesus Christ God or just a prophet? (( A Muslim Scholar (Converted from Christianity Vs. a Christian Scholar (converted from Islam- Nabel Qureshi))

Wake up; your future, your children's future is getting bleaker and bleaker; USA politics -- Obama or McCain will hardly change any thing in Bangladesh or in your own personal Muslim family life, community life, and country life- if you keep on sleeping and not waking up at least by your participation or comment now- do you support or do not support the re-erection of removed Baul Sculptures? Speak out to inject some timely intelligence and universal Human Rights into the heads of our fundamentalist friends:   (     http://www.un. org/Overview/ rights.html    )

THE DAILY STAR
October 22, 2008
Committed to PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO KNOW

Cultural activists and Dhaka University students pose as sculptures and parade streets on the campus yesterday, demanding right to free practice of cultural activities and protesting demolition of Baul sculptures at Zia International Airport intersection. Photo: STAR
Eminent citizens of the country yesterday decided to bring all the organisations protesting the removal of Baul statues from the airport roundabout under one platform in a day or two to forge a people's movement against fundamentalist forces.

They said they will send letters to the Awami League, BNP and other political parties asking them to support the demand for installing a statue of high art value at the site and stand up to what they termed conspiracies against the spirit of the liberation war.

The roads & highways department (RHD) and civil aviation authority removed five Baul (folk singer) statues, including Lalon Shah's, giving in to pressures from fundamentalists on October 15.

The citizens made the decision at a meeting presided over by acclaimed scholar Dr Khan Sarwar Murshed at Comrade Moni Singh-Farhad Trust building yesterday afternoon.
They said the attack on the sculptures is an attack on the culture and tradition of the country, adding that the country would be unliveable if the fundamentalists were not stopped now.
Academician Dr Anisuzzaman, columnist Syed Abul Maksud, sculptor Emdad Hossain, Ajoy Roy of Sammilita Samajik Andolon, Dhaka University teacher Dr Syed Anwar Hossain, commander Abdur Rauf, human rights activists Dr Hamida Hossain, Khushi Kabir and Shamsuzzaman Khan, among others, spoke at the meeting.
The meeting weighed up three options: publishing an open letter to the chief adviser, a common editorial in all newspapers and submitting a memorandum to the chief adviser demanding brakes on the fundamentalist forces.
The citizens will meet today to choose from the options.
Prof Murshed said the threat manifesting itself by forcing authorities to remove the sculptures and the crowing of Islami Oikya Jote Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini strike the foundation of the state and its constitution.
He said the communal forces are rearing their heads from local and international conspiracies.
Prof Murshed slated the government for keeping mum on the issue when the country is swamped with strong protests against the removal of the sculptures.
Syed Abul Maksud said the existence of the country as a modern state would come under threat if the communal forces got their own way.
Pointing to a statement of Amini in which he bellowed that they will demolish all the statues erected during the Awami League government, Maksud said they are doing politics using the sculptures.
Sculptures are not idols, he said.
Prof Anisuzzaman said people should be enlightened that the very individuals who are smashing the sculptures now in the name of Islam went on killing sprees during the liberation war using the baloney that Islam would not exist if Pakistan ceases to exist.
Dr Anwar said there is no conflict between Islam and sculptures. He termed the sculpture haters 'distorters of Islam', saying they cling to a distorted version of the religion.
Meanwhile, different political and cultural organisations continued to protest the removal of the statues.
Speakers at a rally of the Democratic Left Alliance (DLA) said the communal forces are conspiring against the culture and the liberation war gaining from the silence of the government.
Citing the instance of allowing Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid, wanted accused in a graft case, into a meeting with the chief adviser, they alleged that the government was giving shelter to the fundamentalist forces.
Teachers and students from the fine arts faculty of Dhaka University and cultural activists vowed to resist any axis of evil formed against free practice of arts.
They, at a press conference, announced to hold a convention of artists and cultural activists to form a national committee which would prepare a guideline for sculptures and other installations.
They called for formation of a forum comprising artists, critics, architects and city planners, which would devise a policy for erecting sculptures at important public places.
The artists called for naming the roundabout in front of Zia International Airport as Lalan Square.
Abdush Shakur, Abu Naser, Abdus Sattar, Emdad Hossain, Khushi Kabir, Nisar Hossain, Maniruzzaman and theatre artist Shahidul Alam Sacchu, among others, were present at the press conference.
Dhaka University students formed a human chain in front of the university central library demanding the environment for freethinking and free practice of arts.
Fine-arts students of the university posed as sculptures and paraded on the campus.
Samyabadi Dal of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Chhatra Union brought out processions protesting the removal of the sculptures.
Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Goshthi will hold cultural programme at the Shaheed Minar today to protest the removal
