Curb the Departments' rights 2. Lower the academic standards concerning the admission policy. They are concerned that it discriminates against the academically unqualified students of fundamentalist persuasion. The standards set are too high for these students... (not for general students though). The admission policies all over the world in academic institutions discriminate on the basis of academic qualifications -- this seems to be irrelevant to these teachers when it comes to fundamentalist candidates. They have threatened to boycott the admission process unless these students are blindly allowed. May be, that is a good thing as these teachers seem biased. It is also possible that if these unqualified students are given the chance to sit in the exam -- this bias will play in their favour. It is really sad these people are teachers of Dhaka University! May be they should be re-evaluated. Che ------------------------------------

Crossing Blood-Brain Barrier: Scientists Develop Drug Delivery System For Brain Cancers, Other Diseases
Less than five per cent of drugs (made up of very small molecules) are able to cross the barrier. But a new drug delivery system has now been developed that is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier to reach and kill cancer cells in the brain. (Credit: iStockphoto/Vasiliy Yakobchuk) Scientists build bridge across blood-brain barrier Oct. 22, 2008Scientists have developed a new drug delivery system that is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier to reach and kill cancer cells in the brain, according to research presented at the 20th EORTC-NCI-AACR Symposium on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics in Geneva today (Oct. 22). Following successful preclinical studies, the technology is being evaluated in two phase I clinical trials in patients with malignant glioma and brain metastases. The blood-brain barrier is formed by a network of closely sealed endothelial cells in the brain's capillaries, and it expresses a high level of proteins that pump foreign molecules away from the brain, while allowing others (such as glucose and insulin) that are necessary to the functioning of the brain cells to cross the barrier. This makes it very difficult for molecules, including anti-cancer drugs, to cross the blood-brain barrier and reach tumour cells in the brain. Currently, less than 5% of drugs (made up of very small molecules) are able to cross the barrier; one example is temozolomide, which is the only chemotherapy available for treating brain tumors such as glioblastoma multiforme and progressive anaplastic astrocytoma. These tumors have a poor prognosis and continue to grow, even after treatment with temozolomide. Therefore, new therapies for these hard-to-treat brain tumours are needed urgently. In four related presentations to the symposium, scientists from Canada, the USA and France described how they are investigating a new drug delivery technology that provides a non-invasive and flexible way of transporting different drugs (for example, antibodies, proteins, peptides, siRNA, small molecules, etc.) across the blood-brain barrier and into the central nervous system. The drug being evaluated in the four abstracts is called ANG1005. It is made up of one molecule of a peptide called Angiopep-2 joined together with three molecules of paclitaxel, a taxane chemotherapy drug. Dr Reinhard Gabathuler, author of one of the abstracts and chief scientific officer at Angiochem Inc (Montreal, Canada)—the company that is developing the Angiopep technology and ANG1005—explained: "Unlike invasive or pharmacological approaches to deliver drugs to the brain, the Angiopep technology utilises the physiological approach by making use of the receptors on the surface of the blood-brain barrier that are responsible for actively transporting necessary molecules across the barrier to the brain. The family of Angiopeps (including Angiopep-2) has been designed to interact with a specific receptor, Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor Related Protein-1 (LRP-1). This receptor has many functions, binds over 30 ligands [molecules] of various sizes, and is highly expressed at the blood-brain barrier." In laboratory-based tests of ANG1005 on mice and rats, Dr Gabathuler, other scientists in the company and collaborators in the US and Canada found that the drug was transported rapidly across the blood-brain barrier and into the functional part of the brain, the parenchyma. "In contrast to free paclitaxel, which is normally prevented from reaching the brain by the P-glycoprotein efflux pump, ANG1005 is efficiently transported across the blood-brain barrier, with approximately 100-fold higher transport rate compared to free paclitaxel and 10-fold higher transport rate than temozolomide," he said. In addition, the drug resulted in a significant, 27% increase of survival of mice with glioblastoma tumours and a shrinking of glioblastoma tumours in rats. A second study, led by Dr Francis Bichat, head of the scientific platform at Oncodesign (Dijon, France), evaluated the anti-cancer properties of the drug in cancer cell lines and mice, as well as investigating its toxicity and what happened to the drug in mice. He found that ANG1005 had the same anti-cancer properties as did free paclitaxel (paclitaxel on its own) in cancer cell lines. Speaking before the conference, he said: "The anti-tumour activity of paclitaxel was maintained with ANG1005 compared with free paclitaxel. There was no loss of activity." He also found a significant inhibition of brain tumour growth in rats when they were treated with ANG1005, whereas tumours in rats that were treated with paclitaxel did not have their growth inhibited. "This is probably because free paclitaxel is not able to enter the brain," he said. "The most interesting finding from this study is the potency of ANG1005 to bypass the blood-brain barrier and to allow paclitaxel into the brain where it shows anti-tumour activity," said Dr Bichat. The success of these pre-clinical studies enabled Angiochem Inc to start two phase I clinical trials at cancer centres in the US: one in patients with advanced cancer and brain metastases, and the second in patients with recurrent malignant glioma. These trials are still being conducted, but, as of 23 September 2008, 22 patients with advanced solid tumours (including breast cancer, melanoma, liver cancer and 15 patients with brain metastases) have been treated with ANG1005 in the first trial. The drug is given by intravenous infusion for one hour, every 21 days. At doses up to 500 mg/m2 the drug appears to be safe and well tolerated and no patient has discontinued due to adverse side-effects. The researchers are continuing to increase the dose. Dr Jean-Paul Castaigne, president and chief executive officer of Angiochem Inc, who presented the clinical trials results, said: "To date, the safety and tolerability of ANG1005 has been excellent in patients with advanced solid tumours and brain metastases." In the second trial in patients with recurrent malignant glioma, 12 patients had been treated by Sept. 23, 2008—eight with glioblastoma multiforme, one with anaplastic astrocytoma and three with anaplastic oligondendrocytoma. Dr Castaigne said: "We have demonstrated that the drug is safe and tolerable up to and including doses of 75 mg/m2 and we are currently evaluating doses of 105 mg/m2. No patient has discontinued due to drug-related adverse side-effects. So far, all patients (with the exception of one) dosed up to 50 mg/m2 have had their disease progress following two cycles of treatment at six weeks. However, it should be noted that 50 mg/m2 of ANG1005 has an equivalent paclitaxel dose of only about 25 mg/m2, which is still quite low for appreciable cytotoxic effects." He continued: "To date, treatment options for patients with recurrent malignant glioma are limited and prognosis is bleak because of the brain's highly evolved physiological structure. Results from both these trials show that Angiopep conjugates may provide a potentially safe and effective way to treat gliomas and other currently unmanageable diseases of the central nervous system. The Angiopep technology is well tolerated, since most of the side-effects observed to date with ANG1005 are caused by paclitaxel, the active drug component." Both trials will be reporting their most important results by the end of 2008, and researchers are planning a continuation of the trial in patients with brain cancer in 2009. Dr Castaigne said: "Angiochem's intention is to continue the early development of ANG1005 until proof-of-efficacy is obtained in either progressive malignant gliomas or brain metastases. We will seek to find a partner with significant oncology experience to carry forward the later development stages and marketing of ANG1005. "Although other technologies have demonstrated abilities to cross the blood-brain barrier, we believe that the Angiopep technology is the furthest developed of the physiological approach and has significant advantages. ANG1005 is the company's first compound in clinical development using the Angiopep technology. We have been successful in conjugating other chemotherapeutics (e.g. doxorubicin and etoposide) to our technology; preclinical data have demonstrated success in delivering these compounds into the brain and retaining cytotoxic activities. Angiochem is also focusing considerable effort on the conjugation and delivery of other drug classes (including monoclonal antibodies, proteins, peptides, siRNA, etc.) to treat other CNS disorders." Not a word of this hoax should be taken seriously. We cannot afford to be hoodwinked by Jamaat for crying out loud. What big deal is this? What does this business of Jamaat "recognizing" our glorious Liberation War mean or what is it all about? Why should we care whether they do or not? They have been co-optig the sovereignty of Bangladesh in so many ways, and this gesture is the latest stunt. Though I am seething in anger, I have not lost my noodles. In fact, I have been thinking very hard lately. I realized that we had fought and succeeded in defeating the Pakistani Military apparatus in 1971. But we neither fought nor 'defeated' the murderous Bangali Islamist Jamaat. Let me quickly jot down a few points.
First of all, Jammat should not be allowed to contest in any election as a political party. They are NOT a political party. They stand for a political propaganda designed shrewdly to undermine the State, the sovereignty of Bangladesh; and their long term goal is to gobble it as a principality of their far-fetched dream of an Empire. They were asked by the EC to scrap "Allahu aquimuddin" from their charter. They may comply under pressure. So what? Should we comfortably believe that they will stop their agenda around the credo of "Allah is the establisher of the Nation of Religion?" Of course not. The whole thing is totally farcical. That credo or pretense allows them to break all law and order of the land deeming them to be merely "man made." Their illegal actions are only answerable to Allah. And they want to contest the election to become lawmakers! This BS in the name of Islam has nothing to do with being genuinely religious. It is pure politics. They are riding on the wave of another notion that has become popular in the West but, beneath the surface, utterly meaningless and misleading. That is the notion of "religious extremism." Please friends! Think about it. There is no such thing as "religious extremism." All manner of actions and activities that are labeled as such are political in nature from the beginning of civilization. Therefore, it irks me to no end when Jamaat calls attention to themselves as "moderate" Islamists. Let me stop here -- though I have much more to say. This is just to encourage all and sundry to do their own re-thinking. Thanks, but no thanks. There is nothing to rejoice about Jamaat changing its charter, no way, no how. Banish the whole damn propaganda. We have not finished the mukti-juddho until Jamaat is wiped out of this land. -- Farida Majid
Subject: [ALOCHONA] Jamaat recognises Liberation War Jamaat recognises Liberation War Makes major changes in constitution for registration; allows non-Muslims to be members but puts onus of protecting independence only on them Courtesy Daily Star 21/10/09 Shakhawat Liton and Rashidul Hasan Finally, anti-liberation Jamaat-e-Islami has recognised the historic Liberation War of Bangladesh in its newly revised constitution.
The change of policy was forced upon it by its desperation to keep itself legitimised as a parliamentary party registered with the Election Commission (EC), in the face of new amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
The amended RPO says the constitution of a political party seeking registration cannot contradict the country's constitution.
Jamaat's provisional constitution which was submitted to the EC for getting registered as a parliamentary party, also renamed the organisation Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, changing its earlier name Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.
Jamaat also dropped a symbol with the words 'Allahu' and 'Aqimuddin' in Arabic from the cover of its provisional constitution.
The party adopted its constitution in 1979.
Its also allows non-Muslims to be members of Jamaat, but puts the responsibility of protecting the country's independence and sovereignty by taking an oath only on them, while the Muslim members are exempted from taking that oath.
"I shall actively play a role in defending the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh," reads a section of the oath scheduled for non-Muslim members, whose inclusion was prompted by the party's latest necessity for removing religious and gender discriminations within the organisation.
According to Jamaat's interim constitution which will be ratified by a national council within six months of the first sitting of the next parliament, as promised by it, both Muslim and non-Muslim members however must swear to abide by the rules and decisions of the party, giving the highest priority to implementing the decisions.
Among other fundamental beliefs and spirits, Jamaat also accepted the spirit of the heroic liberation war of 1971 by inserting a new paragraph into the preamble of its new provisional constitution.
The heroic struggle of the people and freedom fighters that liberated Bangladesh and put it on the world map as an independent country has been mentioned as a part of the fundamental beliefs and spirits of the party.
Submitting the application for registration and the provisional constitution to the EC for being qualified to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general of Jamaat, said his party has been in politics since May, 1979 by accepting the creation of Bangladesh through the liberation war.
Jamaat was constitutionally banned for years in the newly independent country for its anti-liberation activities and collaboration with the invading army in 1971.
Many Jamaat leaders were facing charges of war crimes and some of them were on the run.
But the party was allowed to resume its activities in 1979 as the constitutional ban on forming religion based political parties was repealed after the bloody regime change of August 15, 1975.
Lately, Jamaat's survival was facing difficulties again as the revised RPO made political parties' registration with the EC mandatory for contesting in the parliamentary election.
The strict new provisions forced the party to change the preamble to its constitution accepting the historic liberation war as its original constitution contradicted the Constitution of Bangladesh.
Jamaat, traditionally an Islamist fundamentalist party, in its revised constitution replaced the phrase describing its goal of 'establishing the rule of Allah' with a new phrase of 'establishing a fair and just Islamic society'.
The party included a new section in its constitution's preamble that says, "Jamaat-e-Islami will work to establish an Islamic social system that guarantees justice for all, since Bangladesh emerged as the third largest Muslim country through a heroic battle of the people and freedom fighters."
According to its interim constitution, Jamaat also co-opted the members of its women's majlish-e-sura into the central majlish-e-sura, the highest policy making body.
It also added provisions for reserving 33 percent seats for women in all its committees with a promise to achieve the target by 2020.
In line with the amended RPO, the new Jamaat constitution also promises to nominate parliamentary contenders from a panel created by the grassroots level committees and forwarded to the party's parliamentary board.
About severing its ties with front organisations, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman who yesterday went to apply for the party's registration, said Jamaat has no front organisation.
Jamaat, a key component of BNP-led four-party alliance which ruled the country just before the current caretaker government, had earlier refused to get registered with the EC under the current RPO, and challenged its legality in the High Court terming some of the amendments unconstitutional. | |

Vote bank politics ensures Delhi support for Assam's Bangla migrants New Delhi, Oct 23 (bdnews24.com)—Regional parties in India have begun playing their state's vote bank politics right in the heart of the capital, New Delhi. Some of the biggest beneficiaries are Muslim migrants from Bangladesh—primarily those settled in the north-east Indian state of Assam, bordering Bangladesh.
Amar Singh, a member of parliament from the Samajwadi Party, has come out in strong defence of the immigrants, who have recently been involved in communal clashes in Assam that left nearly 60 people dead.
"These Muslim families are helpless. The government has to ensure their safety," said Singh, whose party in the Hindi heartland of Uttar Pradesh banks primarily on the sizeable chunk of Muslim voters in the state.
"There is a tendency now to blame a particular community for any clash in the country," he said at a gathering in Jamia Nagar, a Muslim neighbourhood in the Indian capital, where two 'terrorists' allegedly responsible for last month's bomb blasts in the city were recently gunned down by police. The incident has ensured a mad-rush among Indian politicians to tap into Muslim unease that has intensified.
Bengal's firebrand opposition leader Mamata Banerjee, desperate to cut her links with the right wing Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) as election season draws near, has joined the chorus.
"No one has the right to kill or hurt someone even if he is a foreigner. And now that they (the victims) are Indian citizens, our responsibility rises manifold," Banerjee told bdnews24.com during a recent Delhi trip.
Even the Congress Party, which heads the coalition government not just in New Delhi but also in Assam, is now trying to match the rhetoric—especially in Assam, where their own ally – Singh's Samjawadi Party – is trying to cobble together an election alliance with one of Congress' main rivals, the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF).
AUDF, a pro-minority party with the third highest number of seats in Assam's 126-member state assembly, has been working overtime with the likes of Singh to amplify its 'minorities are being victimised' message, forcing Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi to take a controversial stance.
"There are no illegal Bangladeshi nationals in Assam," Gogoi has said, a statement that has snowballed into a major political football. A strong lobby within the Congress now wants an alliance with the AUDF to prevent a split in the Muslim vote.
Political analysts feel that this is just a dress rehearsal of what can be expected in the run-up to the general elections next year. Political parties keen to exploit the Muslim vote bank may end up polarising a fractured polity even further.
This is particularly true for Assam, where Bangladeshi settlers have been bearing the brunt of right-wing violence in past months. A campaign orchestrated by the likes of BJP and the All Assam Students Union (AASU) has not only called into question the territorial loyalty of the Muslim minority, but also blurred the distinction between illegal settlers and Indian Muslims in the state.
The AASU has been spearheading the campaign to stop illegal immigrants from getting jobs, and put pressure on the government to expel them.
Animosities between Assam's immigrant Muslim settlers and tribal communities have intensified in recent years, as both now fight for the same political and geographical space.
Immigrant settlers in areas previously dominated by tribal communities, have sparked feelings of marginalisation among Assam's indigenous population in their own homeland, while the influx of Muslims now comprise an estimated 40 percent of the state's population and form a majority in some districts.
